A word from the Editor Welcome to the April Issue. The holiday season is upon us again, and with Easter just around the corner, the holiday attractions have started to open up for the visitors. There are some great events coming to the town this year, one being the The Fake Festival which is being held in Clarence Park next month (see the feature and ticket information inside). Competitions this month include: The Odeon, The Heritage Centre, and The Seaquarium. To celebrate the 25th birthday of Weston Hospicecare, the first Weston Colour Run will be taking place on the beach this month, full details page 23. The Somerset in Business 2014 showcase is the new name of The North Somerset & Sedgemoor Business Show. For more information on the event, see page 10. Remember to keep sending in news of community events, markets, shows, gigs etc. so that we can include them in our What’s On section.

100 not out for walk volunteers! The number of volunteers actively involved in North Somerset’s Walking for Health initiative has hit a century!

The band of local volunteers team up to lead nine groups and over 400 regular walkers across the district. Seven new volunteers trained as walk leaders in February, suggesting a long future for the scheme, which has been running in North Somerset since 2006. At a time when 70% of adults don’t meet the official guidelines for keeping active, the Walking for Health initiative is a convenient, sociable and free way to exercise. And given that physical inactivity is increasingly emerging on a par with smoking as a threat to public health, costing the economy billions every year, health walks offer a practical way of keeping fit with friends.

Becoming a walk leader is easy with North Somerset Council offering regular free training for new volunteers. The next training session takes place in Clevedon on Thursday 22nd May, from 10am to 3pm. To find out more about health walks in North Somerset or to book a place on the next training session to become a health walk volunteer call North Somerset Council’s sport and active lifestyles team on 01275 882 730, email sport@ n-somerset.gov.uk or visit www.go4life.org Go4Life is a North Somerset Partnership initiative that aims to encourage and help people to live healthier and more active lives. For more on the Walking for Health initiative nationally visit www.walkingforhealth.org.uk

A number of new health walks have launched recently at the Healthy Living Centre and Carlton Centre in Weston-super-Mare. The walks focus on those most at need of regular exercise, whilst helping people to feel less isolated. North Somerset Council’s Active Lifestyle Development Officer, Kira Thorpe commented: “Our volunteers are the backbone of our programme making sure that every individual who attends a health walk has the same positive experience. Their roles involve leading or backmarking walks, planning new routes or supporting the group in other ways. Everything helps to support the success of the scheme.” Officially, the 100th volunteer is Steve Warwicker, a local dinghy sailing instructor who is to become an inclusion training tutor for Walking for Health locally. He is pleased to have got involved in health walk volunteering, saying:“It’s a great motivator to get out with good company and you can learn so much from conversations with other walkers. Anyone can join in and explore their local area through these led walks and there’s no charge!”

458 private Charles Henry James Muton was born in St George, Bristol, on 28th October 1885 to James and Elizabeth Sarah (nee Lansdown) Muton. In 1911 he met and married Ellen (nee Elliot). In the 1911 census he is shown as living with Edward and Jessie Venn, in Fore Street, Milton. He is shown as having a son of one month, born in Milton, presumably at this address. Jessie Venn was his sister and she married Edward Venn in 1907. Charles Muton enlisted at Weston-super-Mare in the 1st Battalion Prince Albert’s Regiment (Somerset Light Infantry). He landed in France on 22nd of August 1914 and was, unfortunately, killed in action on the 9th of November 1914. He has no known grave and is commemorated on panel 3 of the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belguim. He was awarded the 14 Star, British and Victory medals, as well as a clasp. Unfortunately, I do not have a photograph of Charles. Frank Gosden Worle History Society

What is a Lasting Power of Attorney and why do I need one? A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) allows someone to make decisions on your behalf, should there come a time when you lack the ‘Mental Capacity’ to do so yourself. The Alzheimer’s Society states,“There are currently several thousand people living with dementia in North Somerset, with the number set to dramatically rise.” Mental capacity could also be lost through injury, such as a car accident or a debilitating stroke. Without an LPA, a relative or friend must apply to the Government’s Court of Protection (COP) who scrutinise the applicant to assess if they are suitable to run your affairs and become a ‘Deputy’. If they are appointed a Deputy – and this is by no means guaranteed, – the Office of Public Guardian (OPG) will maintain control of your finances. The Deputy will be required to obtain permission to pay expenses on your behalf, such as general bills.

Each decision the OPG makes incurs a fee. OPG fees often run into thousands of pounds a year, these are ongoing until you either recover, or die. Alternatively the OPG may reject the application and appoint a representative of the Court to manage your affairs. In effect a stranger. Having a Lasting Power of Attorney in place or the old Enduring Power of Attorney is the only sure way to prevent this situation and they can only be made whilst mental capacity is still present.

Foresight Wills of Portishead has produced a simple information leaflet which is free of charge and gives an overview of the different types of Lasting Power of Attorney and how to organise one. For further information please call 01934 319 855 OR 01275 390627. A Free Download pack is also available @ www.foresightwills.com

Celebrating our Seaside North Somerset Council is teaming up with VisitEngland to promote our seaside at Weston-super-Mare, Kewstoke/Sand Bay, Clevedon and Portishead. The ‘English Seaside’ campaign uses a host of media designed to boost domestic tourism and this year includes a range of national online and print advertising with IPC media publications, Chat, Woman, Pick Me Up, Woman and Home, and Essentials. There will also be marketing activity on social media and a dedicated section on visitengland.com. The campaign is part of Growing Tourism Locally, VisitEngland’s three-year investment project, which is part-funded by the Government’s Regional Growth Fund, with additional contributions from businesses and partners in the tourism industry. Last year, North Somerset took part in the’‘Rural Escapes’ campaign and received excellent coverage in the Guardian and Mail Group of Newspapers, plus Classic and Gold FM radio. “We are taking part in the ‘English Seaside’ campaign which goes live on 25 March, just in time for Easter,” said Cllr Felicity Baker, North Somerset Council’s

executive member whose portfolio includes tourism. “We will be getting national press and internet coverage for our lovely North Somerset coastline and pages promoting experiences for families in our four coastal destinations on the VisitEngland website. “Media coverage of the Somerset Levels floods has given the impression that the entire county is inaccessible, and I’d like to encourage tourism businesses in North Somerset to support this campaign and inspire UK residents to take more holidays and short breaks at home – especially in North Somerset!”

See pages on our seaside destinations and discover more about the English seaside @ www.visitengland.com/moreseaside.

Vulcan to return to air festival

The mighty Avro Vulcan Bomber has just been confirmed as one of the headline displays on Sunday at this year’s Weston Air Festival taking place on the 21st and 22nd June. The Avro Vulcan XH558 returned to flight in 2007, following an award winning restoration programme. As the last airworthy Vulcan, she returned triumphantly to the air display circuit in 2008 and has been a significant crowd puller at every show at which she has since appeared. Councillor Felicity Baker said “ We are delighted the magnificent Vulcan will be appearing at our Air Festival once again. This iconic aircraft is a huge hit with visitors whenever it flies, and promises to be a firm crowd favourite.” More spectacular air displays will soon be revealed. The beach lawns will also be packed with military displays, attractions, activities and performances over the whole weekend, so don’t miss out on the fun! Keep up to date with all the festival news and soon to be announced competitions on www.n-somerset.gov. uk/airfestival and on Twitter @WestonSeafront See more at: http://www.n-somerset.gov.uk/News/ Pages/Vulcan-to-return-to-air-festival Thanks to Paul Dopson/Flight Global for the Vulcan Image taken at Farnborough.

Disorder in the Victualling Houses!

T

he earliest known publican at Worle was one Andrew Warrin. He is recorded in a list of 1608 taken from the ‘Easter to Michaelmas Session Roll’ under the heading ‘Tiplers or Victualling Houses in the Hundred of Winterstoke’. Unfortunately no hint of where Andrew actually tipled in the village was given. By 1619 there were at least a couple of establishments in Worle but the inhabitants were none too happy about it. They petitioned the authorities to have the two alehouses where there need not be any, closed. This was apparently because there was ‘very much disorder, and many great abuses and wrongs’ done in them which greatly disturbed the locals. Most of the petitioners were unable to write, and signed with their mark but their wish was temporarily granted. The following year one Anthony Methwyn appears to have gone over the heads of the local magistrates. In 1620, he and his brothers, Richard and Thomas, were granted a licence by James who at that time styled himself King of England, Scotland and France. This time the establishment was described as his house at the sign of the King’s Head and the duration of the license was open ended according to which of the brothers died last. The Methwyn family were Presbyterians who fled from Scotland and are said to have originally found favour with Queen Elizabeth I. They established themselves in the Church of England and several members of the family are listed as vicars of Kewstoke.

Well, where was the Kings Head? There is no reason to suppose the original King’s Head occupied a site anywhere other than the Old King’s Head of today. It was rebuilt after it was consumed by fire at the beginning of the twentieth century. Whilst the Lamb Inn can claim to be the oldest surviving premises, the King’s Head is certainly the oldest surviving licensed business in Worle and likely to be one of the two which were suppressed in 1619. The way in which the petition was written does suggest that the other one was nearby, perhaps just the other side of what was the bowling green.

Many thanks to the research facilities of Weston Local Studies Library and Somerset Heritage Centre

WESTON HOSPICE About Weston Hospicecare

Founded by the community in 1989, Weston Hospicecare, provides physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual care to local people with life limiting illnesses such as cancer, motor neurone disease and heart or lung failure. The Hospice’s care reaches out to local people in Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset and border areas of Somerset providing a safe haven and source of comfort and guidance to every single person who needs it. The Hospice consists of a day hospice, a ten bed In-patient Unit, a team of Hospice Community Nurse Specialists, Hospice at home, chaplaincy and bereavement services. These complementary services work in harmony to ensure patients receive excellent specialist care, be that at home or in the Hospice, and that they and their families are cared for and reassured throughout the toughest experience they will ever face. All of this is provided free of charge and it costs nearly £3 million every year to keep the Hospice doors open, of which only 19% is funded by the NHS. The rest is raised each year through the generosity of the local community, fundraising events, partnerships with local companies, the hospice lottery and via the network of Hospice shops.

The Hive revealed with further services and facilities announced

The Hive, North Somerset’s landmark new workspace and business development centre which is due to open in May, has announced details of the “Hive Express Business Lounge”. Based in the Weston Business Quarter on the old Weston airfield site, the business lounge will enable people who need a hot desk facility in a smart professional business environment to buy space by the hour or by the day. Hive Express will be a ‘work hub’ both for its tenants and for businesses and employees from North Somerset and surrounding areas. It will include free unlimited WiFi, space for quick informal business meetings, lockers, access to daily broadsheet newspapers and monthly business magazines and even shower facilities as part of its offer. All this comes at a small charge of just £3 per hour or £20 per day (9.00am5.00pm). The Hive’s tenants will be able to use Hive Express free of charge. Refreshments, printing and photocopying facilities will be available at additional cost, delivering an attractive option not only for local business people who need professional space on occasion but also for employees of businesses who may require office facilities in North Somerset on an ad-hoc basis. The Hive has also revealed its sustainable transport options to make travel to, from and around the Hive as environmentallyfriendly as possible. In addition to offering easy access by car (being 5 minutes from Junction 21 of the M5) and being just 30 minutes from Bristol International Airport with several nearby train stations and bus routes, The Hive has secured funding from the sustainable transport team at North Somerset Council for a variety of ‘pool’ cycles, including one electrically-powered cycle, that will be available for all tenants to book. In addition, The Hive will provide storage and shelters, drying lockers for wet motorbike or cycle gear, shower facilities and even puncture-repair kits and cycle accessories. A double point electric vehicle charger will also be available on site and The Hive will be working closely with TravelWest to support tenants in achieving their travel aims, whether in reducing business travel or finding alternative ways to get their workforce to work. The announcements come as the landmark building’s scaffolding is removed and its distinctive appearance with external spiral staircases is revealed. Photovoltaic cells and solar panels are now also in place on the roof, part of many energy-saving measures to make the building energyefficient and sustainable.

The Hive, which is based on the former Weston Airfield site in the Junction 21 Enterprise Area of Weston-super-Mare, will exist to support the launch, development and success of local businesses by delivering an array of on-site business support, resources and services alongside 20,000 sq. ft. of rentable managed office space and communal facilities. On offer are unfurnished offices with dedicated and secure broadband and a managed business reception plus virtual office services and meeting rooms which will be available to non-tenants also. The building is set to be handed over to North Somerset Enterprise Agency (NSEA), the locally-based not-for-profit organisation who will plough any money raised from The Hive back into supporting North Somerset businesses, in mid-April - when the Enterprise Agency’s team will move into the building - with first tenants following in May. “We have been working towards the delivery of this modern and eco-friendly managed workspace for many years, so finally seeing the building standing in all its glory and being able to gradually unveil the unique package of facilities and services that we will soon be offering to local businesses is an exciting milestone.” says Angela Hicks, CEO of North Somerset Enterprise Agency. “We already have a number of events booked to take place in The Hive and the countdown to opening will begin as soon as we receive handover. We are moving towards an exciting new era for businesses looking to start and grow in North Somerset and The Hive is set to be the place where all the support and facilities that a business needs are available under one roof.We are very excited about its potential impact.”

Businesses who would like more information on relocating to The Hive or about the facilities and services that will be available, can contact Rob Hicks, business development co-ordinator on

Look up! And get more space at home for just £325 We’d all like more room at home. But not everyone can afford to move or extend. So what if there was a way to get extra space for just a few hundred pounds, ready to use in less than a day? In truth, that space is already there. It’s just not being used to its full potential. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited on rare occasions; a precarious scramble across dusty beams with torch in hand, clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place can quickly be turned into an easily accessed space ideal for storage. So shouldn’t we be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton six years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making our lofts easily accessible. The latest MTLL franchise to open covers the Weston area and is run by skilled local, John Crilly, who says the company’s no-frills approach is what most people are looking for. “We’re not selling £15,000 loft conversions,” says John.“This is a low-cost and simple alternative. For just £277 + VAT you can get a ladder that slides easily up and down, as well as a proper light and some boarding to make the space safe and secure. We can also fit a draft-proof loft hatch if required from only £55.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out charges. John provides a free guarantee on all parts and labour too.

Generous donations help Weston RNLI’s Appeal for a new station. Donations from the Weston Community are swelling the coffers of the Appeal and offers of help keep coming in. Many individuals and organisations are helping us with our task of raising funds for an appeal for the desperately-needed new lifeboat station. Sometimes it is a loved one who wanted to leave funds for us. Sometimes it is an event which has been organised to raise money for us. Sometimes it is by giving us essential time or facilities which would otherwise have cost us money. The mother of David Hoggarth, the owner and manager of Huttons Ltd., Fiat dealers of Bleadon, left the extremely generous sum of £5000 for him to donate to a local lifeboat station. She had been a keen sailor around West Wales and the Bristol Channel. Mr Hoggarth himself used to have a boat in Weston Bay for many years. He had seen at first hand the condition of Birnbeck Island deteriorate in recent years. It was a clear choice for him to decide to donate the money to the Weston-super-Mare RNLI Appeal. At a presentation of the cheque at Huttons Motors he said; ‘Thank you all for coming this morning to receive the £5k donation from my mother towards the WSM boathouse appeal. I am confident that my mother is very pleased that you have received this money for such a good and lasting objective. We just ask you to use the money wisely. An RNLI charity quiz night was organised by Peter Phillips and was held at the Claremont Vaults on the 21st February. A raffle also took place with the prizes being donated by the quiz entrants. 30

A total of £250 was raised and presented by Quiz Master Peter Phillips to Weston super Mare new Lifeboat Station appeal. Peter said “It was a fantastic fun-filled event supported enthusiastically by RNLI supporters & quizzers alike; we hope to do this on a regular basis” The Weston Town Centre Partnership is the action-orientated initiative formed in 1998 as Weston’s Town Centre Management Partnership, that brings together private and not-for-profit sectors to improve the town centre and promote Weston to itself and others. Known as Weston BID, one of their projects was to sell picture postcards of Birnbeck Island, and in doing so they raised £330. Finally, local security company ‘Spansec Security’ have donated and installed a new security and monitoring system for our temporary Lifeboat Station at Knightstone Harbour.
