The Weston & Worle View - July 2014

14 July 20

There were some big events in Weston last month, The Air Show, Armed Forces Day, and of course the weekend musical festival on the beach. Large crowds turned out for these events, which goes to show that Weston can still attract the visitors. Don’t forget the Newt Festival and the Watchet Festival are on in July; see inside the magazine for details. The Lions Beer Festival returns for another year, so go down to the beach lawns and support them. We have had some excellent feedback from readers regarding the editorial side of the magazine, we always try to have some different features to read, and we believe that a magazine should be interesting. We have seen other publications out there which just look like a magazine containing nothing but adverts; so please keep sending your articles in to us. If you have any ideas of what else you would like to see in the magazine then please let us know.

Weston

Events

On the Saturday night, music fans are being encourage to dust-off their flares, don their glitter wigs, and boogie on down to the best disco in town, as the Quarry rocks to top ABBA Tribute band, ABBA’s Angels. There will be mirror balls a-plenty as the 40th Anniversary of ABBA bursting onto the music scene is celebrated in style. The Sunday night sees a change in tempo as the Quarry plays host to the acclaimed Weston Brass, who will be bringing a touch of Pomp and Circumstance to Weston’s very own Last Night of the Proms event. The evening will also mark the start of World War One with a sing-along of some popular tunes from that era. Event specialists, C4 Events, will be lighting up the towering rock faces and providing a few more surprises to make the evenings even more memorable. Concert-goers can bring their own food and drink, but a bar, hot food and beverages will also be on sale. More details on this charity event, which is raising funds for the Weston-SUPER-Events project from Weston Arts Social Enterprise, can be found on the website:

College students produce new logo for town’s Chamber of Commerce. Weston-super-Mare Chamber of Trade has a new logo, thanks to students from Weston College’s Graphic Design Students. As part of a re-branding exercise, and in conjunction with the Chamber’s launch of Weston’s own Business Awards, the group approached the college for input. Chamber President, Gail Parsons, said, “We have worked with the college on a number of projects, and knew that the talent existed amongst their students to produce something exceptional to help the Chamber become more relevant to today’s businesses. “Not only have they created something special for their portfolios, but they have also got a piece of work that will be seen all over the town for years to come. “The students were originally approached to help with the branding of our Business Awards, but we liked what they produced so much that we decided to adopt their work as a blueprint for our literature and website instead. The students, who are in the first year of a Foundation Degree at the College’s University Campus, were commended by their project leader, Laura Parke, who said, “The students applied themselves exceptionally well, against a demanding brief, and the work produced exceeded all expectations. Inspiration for the logo was drawn, following extensive research, from the structure of the old diving boards which were so iconic of the town, and, to the students, represented striving to reach the top, as well as a podium for winners. The mood-board of other images will be further developed to be integrated into the Chambers branding. The students behind the designs are: Luke Jones, Isobel Gardner, India Lawton, Phillip Demir, Joshua Lewins and Charley Murray For more details on Weston-super-Mare Chamber of Commerce, visit: www.westonchamber.co.uk

Every now and then, the world of computing is shaken by a real security issue that the experts deem as “very serious”. Some, like the Year 2000 bug, turn out to be a “non-event”, but others come under the “better-safe-than-sorry” scenario. The current “Heartbleed” scare is firmly in the latter category - for the moment. When we send sensitive information across the Internet, it is encrypted, and the web address starts with https:// with little padlock symbol. This has always been assumed by all concerned - include banks and the likes of Amazon and Google - to be very secure. It has recently come to light that there is an error (a bug) in the software that runs this encryption that allows data to be grabbed as it flies across the Internet - data which could be useful to someone who wants to clear your hard-earn funds. The experts didn’t make this bug common knowledge in the first instance so as to give the financial institutions time to plug the hole before criminals knew what was happening except that no-one knows how long the bug has been “doing it’s thing” or if naughty people already knew about it! This is not a virus, so we are not protected from its potential effects, and the best way of dealing with it is by changing all our passwords (see last months Technology Corner). Have you been affected? Well, its hard to say. Some web sites, like Mumsnet, have reported a breach, but many more will not have been caught out. So this is really a case of hoping for the best. If you are concerned, call us for free, no-obligation advice on:
