A word from the Editor Stand by for a bumper month of entertainment in Weston; there are some fantastic days out to be had! The two-day Armed Forces Day and Air Festival Spectacular on the beach lawns returns to build on last year’s success. Also, the Pro-National bike riders will be here thrilling the crowds with their displays and there are loads of other events happening in and around Weston for you to enjoy; so let’s hope we have a ‘flaming June’. We would like to wish Mark Sweeting and his team well on their sponsored bike ride to Paris, raising money for the remarkable cause that is Weston Hospicecare; read about Mark’s preparation on page 21. We also have an article on how you can become part of the history of Weston. Imagine future generations seeing your name engraved on the floor at the Museum - see the inside backcover for more information. Also, we would like to thank Morrisons and Asda for becoming the latest in our growing list of distribution points for the Weston & Worle View magazine; you can now pick up your copy when you’re shopping!

ARMED FORCES DAY & AIR FESTIVAL 2014 Armed Forces Day – Weston Air Festival | Saturday 21st – Sunday 22nd June Before the days’ activities begin, there will be a ‘Granting of Honourary Freedom of the Town’ to 40 Commando, Royal Marines. The official Armed Forces Day opening and flag raising, will follow.

Armed Forces Day 2014

Armed Forces Day first took place on 27th June 2009; it replaced Veterans’ Day which was first observed in 2006. Armed Forces Day is a celebration of our fighting men and women, and the immeasurable contribution they make to our lives and to the reputation of our Country. Through centuries of service to the nation, the members of our Armed Forces have established a record unequalled in the world. They work selflessly with honour and distinction in the most challenging circumstances imaginable. This day also recognises the wider family: the Veterans, young and old; the many volunteers who support the Cadet Force so tirelessly; and – of paramount importance and sometimes forgotten – the families and friends whose care and support enables such excellence. Locally, Weston Town Council has continued to provide funding necessary to hold the local celebrations, which are organised by a steering group of fantastic volunteers. Building on the success of past events, this year’s show is set to be bigger and better and will take place on the beach lawns, opposite the Tropicana, Saturday 21st June 2014. The Freedom of the Town will see 550 Royal Marines parade from Regent Street to Princess Royal Square where the ceremony will begin at 11am.

The ceremony will close with a helicopter flypast and 11 gun salute before the 40 Commando, Royal Marines march off towards Oxford Street to exercise their freedom. Following this, the Armed Forces Day flag raising ceremony will commence at 12.30pm, complemented by the RAFA Band Concert. In the Armed Forces Village, visitors of all ages will have a unique opportunity to see Armed Forces up-close; meet current personnel, Veterans, Cadet Forces, Civilian Agencies and Charities. Throughout the day there will be a range of Arena events including the Red ‘Barrows’ Display by 290 Squadron Air Training Corps and various displays by Army, Sea and Marine Cadets. There will be a Junior Gun Display and Sealed Knot Black Powder Demonstration by the Sir Henry Tillier’s Regiment of Foot. various air displays and fly-pasts are planned throughout the afternoon. The day will close with a Drumhead Service and Evening Hymn, concluding with flag lowering at 1800hrs, where it will presented to the Mayor for safe keeping until next year. The Armed Forces Village will remain for the Sunday, as tens of thousands are expected to descend on the Town to enjoy the Weston Air Festival, with tightrope walkers, samba bands and much much more performing in the arena.

The Red Arrows Vulcan Bomber Tucano Tutor Sea King Helicopter Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (featuring the most famous and charismatic fighter plane, the Spitfire, the historically important and rare Hawker Hurricane, and the hardworking unsung hero of World War Two; the Dakota)

The RAF Falcons parachute display team will also be performing at the Weston Air Festival and Armed Forces Day celebration, thanks to sponsorship from Weston College. Widely recognised as the UK’s premier military parachute display team, The Falcons will wow the crowds with their controlled freefall movements across the sky thousands of feet above the ground, including their trademark canopy stack manoeuvre. You can keep up to date with all the festival news and soon to be announced competitions at www.n-somerset.gov.uk/airfestival, or follow the latest updates on Twitter @WestonSeafront. More contributors help the Weston-super-Mare RNLI Appeal for a new Boathouse Many organisations, clubs, and groups plus individuals are rallying round to help Weston-super-Mare RNLI life-saving volunteers get their new boathouse and to keep carrying out their rescues.

When there is an Appeal happening it is often forgotten that the local RNLI station needs to keep the life saving service going while they collect enough money for the Appeal. The cost of running Weston-super-Mare RNLI station going is in the region of £100,000 a year. The cost of kitting out just one volunteer lifeboatmen with the personal protection gear he or she needs, is £1,290. Each year they have to spend an average of £1,330 on training each crew member. It is the rigorous training they receive which enables them to cope under the sometimes high risk conditions in which they are asked to launch their boats. Thus the station and its crew are always grateful for the efforts of their local area helping them to raise funds for the Appeal and their running costs. Panthers, the Beaver Colony from the 1st Milton Scout Group, presented Mrs Charlotte Conroy (The new Lifeboat Operations Mrs Conroy receiving the cheque Manager of from the Scouts. Weston-superMare Lifeboat Station) with a cheque for £1,690.27 towards the New Lifeboat Station Appeal. The money was raised by the group touring the Milton and Worle areas with their carol float and a lifeboat collection in High Street at Christmas. The Group would like to thank the people of Weston-super-Mare for their generosity. Charlie Conroy thanked the Panthers and all at 1st Milton Scouts for their fantastic support of the RNLI in Weston. She said; “Over the years this scout group has worked hard every Christmas to raise money for us. The crew are extremely grateful for their efforts which help to keep us going.” Mrs Hudson, a supporter from Banwell held a Coffee Morning which raised the sum of £261. The Treasurer of the Lifeboat station, www.westonandworleview.co.uk

Brian Ward, attended to receive the cheque. He said; “We are always grateful for individuals who give up their time Brian Ward and Mrs Judith Hayes and resources (Fundraising treasurer) at Mrs Hudson’s to help us. We do not get any money from government; it all comes from the public. Every time we launch to save a life it is only because of the marvellous support we get from people like Mrs Hudson.” Weston-super-Mare Round Table, at a dinner hosted by the 41 Club, presented a cheque for £250 to Mr Peter Elmont, chair of the Fundraising Branch and Mrs Charlotte Conroy.

Pete Elmont and Mrs Conroy receiving the cheque from the Round Table.

Mr Elmont said; “The Round table has always been a regular supporter of the RNLI. They know how important it is that a life-saving service is present in Weston Bay and they know how expensive it is to keep it going.”

Just over a month to go

for the

Great Weston Ride With not long to go now and with lots of newcomers already on board, we thought it might help to summarise what participants can expect from the 2014 Great Weston Ride. There’s a fairly comprehensive list on the website, but key features at the finish once again include topnotch food for riders courtesy of the Field&Flower Outdoor Kitchen (menu details tbc soon). Riders’ food is included in the entry fee, while any friends, family, supporters, etc. waiting to greet riders at the finish are also able (and welcome) to purchase food from the Field&Flower kitchen. There is also a VERY nice new Great Weston Ride medal design for 2014 and these will be presented to riders at the finish to mark their achievement in completing the Ride and to serve as a permanent reminder of the day. A post-Ride massage service is on offer again for anyone who needs to soothe any aches and pains – same as last year, there’s no fixed cost for this,

www.westonandworleview.co.uk

instead it will be a case of donations for the service, with 50% of all monies going to Prostate Cancer UK (obviously there will be limited capacity on this, so it will have to be ‘first come, first served’). Further information and details on how to enter can be found at www.greatwestonride.com You can also email direct at mail@greatwestonride.com www.prostatecanceruk.org

Weston Hospicecare

on the move

Weston Hospicecare has had an offer accepted for the Moose International’s headquarters in Winscombe. The Hospice will move from its current site in Uphill, Weston-super-Mare, to an ‘idyllic location’ in which patients and their families can receive vital end of life care. CEO Gill Auden at Weston Hospicecare explains this decision: “We are thrilled to have secured this fantastic site, surrounded by woodland, with good transport links and acres of space for us to create a state-of-the-art Hospice for our patients. This move will safeguard the future of Weston Hospicecare and excellent end of life care in our corner of North Somerset. This will be the third home the Hospicecare has had in our 25 years and this new site offers so much more space both for much improved outdoor space and views, which plays such a an important part in the health and well being of our patients”.

The Hospice will update the community at key milestones during the project.

New Management

@ The Parish Clare and Richard Westlake have become the new managers of The Parish Pump pub in Worle. They have taken over from Richard’s father, Richard senior, who is leaving his son and daughter-in-law to take over the helm. Clare and Richard have many fantastic ideas and intend to implement a few changes to the Parish Pump. They have already changed the design of the menu, and the food on offer focuses on proper British pub fayre. Children have not been left out, with a new kids’ menu and place mats they can colour in whilst waiting for their food. For those with a sweet tooth (like myself!) they have added Kelly’s Cornish Ice Cream to the menu. For true beer lovers, there is a selection of barrelled ales to be enjoyed and, for families with young children, they are developing an outdoor play area. For the sports fans, there is Sky Sports. The Westlakes are focusing on good, family entertainment and laying-on events to suit everyone. On Monday the 9th of June they have the Theatre Orchard Company with Living Spit, performing One Man and his Cow. They will be having ‘Open Mic’ sessions, family discos, jazz and other live music sessions. Also in the pipe line are Hallowe’en and Christmas parties, plus much, much more.

Clare & Richard outside The Parish Pump

Most importantly, however, there is to be a massive Charity Day on the 30th August, ending with a Fire Walking Extravaganza, with all monies raised going to the well-deserving ‘Little Heroes’ children’s cancer charity. As if they didn’t have enough to do with running the pub, Clare and Richard have three children to look after, and Richard is riding the Great Weston Bike Ride’s 56 mile route from Bristol to Weston, via Chew Valley and The Mendips. All monies raised from the ride will be going to the Prostate Cancer Appeal Richard and Clare are developing a proper family pub in Weston with the personal touch; they know their customers, their likes and dislikes, and would welcome anyone to join them, lunchtimes or evenings, and for any occasion. At the moment and to support him in the kitchen, Richard is also looking for a part time chef 20 hrs a week.

Pedal to Paris!

The Weston and Worle View would like to wish the team of Mark,Tommy, Anthony and Danny, the best of luck in their sponsored bike ride to Paris, which takes place between the 30th July and 3rd of August. After speaking to one team member, Mark Sweeting, it is very difficult not to be caught up in his enthusiasm, warmth, and true willingness to raise money for a remarkable cause – Weston Hospicecare. Mark works at Waitrose in Clifton, and part of his working life is to dedicate 100 hours a year for charity. He has been committing his 100 hours to the hospice because, like a lot of us, he has been touched by someone close needing the charity’s care. This is why he is happy and determined to raise money for this wonderful cause. The training for this event is hard work but, with the help of Virgin Active’s Gym, the guys have worked at this methodically. They keep a keen eye on their diet, which they ensure is kept high on protein and carbohydrates - especially on training days. They have just completed a 51 mile bike ride round the Mendips including Burrington, Cheddar and Wedmore; this alone used up 4,000 calories, but they will have to get used to this as they will be biking 80 to 90 miles a day.Their bikes have been serviced, and all the kits donated, by the Bicycle Chain, to which Mark would like to say “Thank You”.

www.westonandworleview.co.uk

In addition to raising sponsorship on the ride itself, there is also a Triathlon event being held at Virgin Active Gym on the 14th of June. If you have a team that would like to compete, please contact Virgin Active Gym on Locking Road. This will be the first time Mark has been to Paris, and, although not the way he thought he would visit, he is sure he will be very happy to see the Eiffel Tower. He must, however, make sure he doesn’t arrive late, as the Tour de France will be arriving the next day! If you would like to sponsor this amazing event, please donate at: www.justgiving.com/ParisCycleWestonHospice Good luck to you all!

RELOCATION TO THE HIVE PROVES A MOVING EXPERIENCE FOR NORTH SOMERSET ENTERPRISE AGENCY North Somerset Enterprise Agency (NSEA) has been celebrating its move into its landmark new workspace and business development centre The Hive, ahead of the arrival of the building’s first business tenants.

New Bluebird Care office opens in Weston-super-Mare

A popular provider of quality care in the home has opened a brand new office in the centre of Weston-super-Mare. Bluebird Care provides care-at-home services to support adults of all ages, including those living with physical disabilities, people with learning difficulties or people living with dementia. As a locally owned provider, they are delivering dedicated services to allow the residents of the town, and wider North Somerset, to keep on living in their own homes happily and safely. Cllr Mike Bell, local councillor and member of both the Health Scrutiny Panel and Adult Social Services Panel at North Somerset Council, officially opened the new office at 35 The Boulevard last week. Cllr Bell commented: “I’m delighted to have been invited to open the new Bluebird Care office in Weston-super-Mare. Figures show that alarmingly, up to a third of people over the age of 75 say they are lonely, while a quarter say they do not leave their house for days on end. Older people are valuable members of our community, and it’s only right they receive high quality services which meet their needs. I look forward to working with Bluebird Care in the future, as they build strong links within our local community.” Set up by Tim Rowland-Jones and Louise Taylor, Bluebird Care has already made a difference locally since they started providing services last year. Activities include sponsoring a coffee morning on Grand Pier for Older People’s Day in October, and providing up to 25 new jobs for local people. Managing Directior, Tim Rowland-Jones added: “We care passionately about providing high quality personalised care for people living in their own homes and also about raising awareness of key issues such as dementia to make sure people are provided with the right level of support to live their lives.” Attending the grand opening were representatives from Healthwatch, the Multicultural Friendship Association, the Notable Club, local churches, North Somerset Council, and service users themselves. For Bluebird Care, the opening marks the opportunity for North Somerset residents to be able to make an even stronger choice about living an independent life and having access to tailored services that support them properly in their own home.

66351 Lance Corporal Joseph Henry Payne was born in Worle to Oliver and Ada (nee Brooks) Payne on 6th December 1887. He is shown in the 1891 census as living with his parents in his maternal grandfather’s house in upper Worle. This was probably where he was born. In the 1901 census he is shown as living with his parents in Church Street. After attending the local school he was employed by the Midland Railway Company at Bristol. He was subsequently employed in the Swansea district, where he met and married Catherine (Kate) Penny in Pontardawe on 4th June 1910. Their son, John, was born in February 1913, but sadly died from bronchitis when he was only 25 days old. Joseph enlisted in Bristol, in the 2nd/6th battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment. Joseph was, unfortunately, killed on 2nd December 1917 at the battle of Cambrai. He was awarded the Victory and British War medals and is commemorated on Panel 6 of the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval. A fellow soldier, Private Bryant, was injured by the same shell, losing a leg, and travelled with his mother from Bristol in order to visit Joseph’s widow to recount what had happened to Joseph. Joseph’s widow, Catherine, remarried William John Price on 19th April 1919 at Stanton Drew, where she was born. The Shop Upstairs The ‘Shop Upstairs’ is a student run project on Weston-super-Mare’s High Street and offers discounts for young people, as well as the opportunity to gain skills in retail. Outfits can be purchased for as little as £10.00 and range from high street labels to items that create the perfect vintage and retro look. As well as clothing, the shop stocks fancy dress, text books and essential kitchen starter kits for first homes. There is more good news for students. The shop is offering 10% discount on all purchases with a valid NUS card. The majority of the volunteers in store are students, like Stacey, who are looking for vital work experience to give them an edge when they leave college. The Shop Upstairs is located above Weston Hospicecare’s shop on the High Street. Weston College and Weston Hospicecare have partnered to open the shop which is mamaged by students, with support from the Hospice team, and all proceeds are used for the care of local people with life-limiting illness.

Valiant

Soldier

erched at the top of Worle Hill, the three storied house in Church Road, now known as Highcliff, was once an Inn called ‘The Valiant Soldier’ From the back, the building gives the appearance of having been constructed in three phases and it is believed to date back to the seventeenth century. However there is no documentary evidence to support this claim; it could have been built more recently and may even be older. The interior shows many signs of alteration and addition and the large back door of the kitchen certainly suggests this was once the stable area. Legend has it that Judge George Jeffries stayed at the inn during the course of the Bloody Assizes following Monmouth’s Rebellion in 1685. Sadly again there is no evidence to support the story, indeed it is unlikely that Jeffries came anywhere near the village of Worle during his progress in the West Country. No doubt the villagers did not feel too deprived as a result of the oversight, the vicar at the time, one Joseph Francklyn was recorded in ‘King James’ General Pardon’ during the following year and others were probably involved. It would be interesting to find out when the inn became known as the Valiant Soldier and if it was in some way connected to events surrounding the insurrection. The Land Tax Redemption of 1799 shows Henry Long as the occupier of the Soldier, perhaps he had no valour! However in 1810 it was advertised for auction as The Valiant Soldier but this time as a mere dwelling house. Some sort of business was carried on at the premises as another advert in 1811 was for ‘private families’ presumably for bed & board, it is not clear. Many thanks to the research facilities of Weston Local Studies Library and Somerset Heritage Centre. To find out more about the pubs and other interesting historical detail, why not come and visit Worle History Society’s Exhibition at Lawrence Hall on 15th-16th August. All are welcome.

‘Worle’s Pubs’ is available now.

Book price: £7.00 For more details please contact:

Weston’s History: Be a part of it!!

Weston’s Museum is offering a oneoff opportunity to leave your name or corporate logo laser cut into a unique, numbered floor block, which will become a permanent fixture in the museum floor. The Buy-a-Block fundraiser has been created to support Weston-super-Mare Town Council’s bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund, for the refurbishment of Weston Museum. There are only 2000 blocks available, and each block comes with a numbered certificate. What are the costs? Members of the public can have their name or family name written on the floor of Weston Museum, engraved into a numbered floor block for many years to come, for only £30.00. Businesses can also choose to support the museum, by having their name and logo, or just their logo, engraved into one or more of the Museum’s floor blocks, for £120.00, per block. The blocks will be laid in the Museum during the refurbishment period, which is anticipated to happen from April 2015. A ‘proof of ownership certificate’ will be posted to you within 6 weeks, and your block will be available to see for a short time at the Museum. The council will provide you with a date to view your block, after processing your application.
