It shows a group of guys enjoying their lunch hour on the beach at Weston. It’s nice to see Weston getting national coverage in a good light, whilst also showing-off the power of advertising!

The onset of Summer brings with it an exciting mix of events for us to join in with, as well as inspiring some of us to get round to those odd jobs around the house which we have put off throughout the winter months.

About Weston Hospicecare

Founded by the community in 1989, Weston Hospicecare provides physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual care to local people with life limiting illnesses such as cancer, motor neurone disease and heart or lung failure.

The Hospice’s care reaches out to local people in Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset and border areas of Somerset providing a safe haven and source of comfort and guidance to every single person who needs it.

The Hospice consists of a day hospice, a ten bed In-patient Unit, a team of Hospice Community Nurse Specialists, Hospice at home, chaplaincy and bereavement services.

These complementary services work in harmony to ensure patients receive excellent specialistcare, be that at home or in the Hospice and that they and their families are cared for and reassured throughout the toughest experience they will ever face.

All of this is provided free of charge and it costs nearly £3 million every year to keep the Hospice doors open, of which only 19% is funded by the NHS. The rest is raised each year through the generosity of the local community, fundraising events, partnerships with local companies, the hospice lottery and via the network of Hospice shops.

£40,000 raised in clouds of colour for Weston Hospicecare!

1500 walkers and runners swarmed onto Uphill Beach on Sunday the 27th of April, to take part in the Weston Colour Run, raising £40,000 and securing the future of the event.

Dressed in white and accessorised with neon tutus, sweat bands, leg warmers and sunglasses, 1500 people ran a 5k or 10k route whilst being showered in clouds of multi-coloured paint.

There was a team of bananas, a storm trooper and a few multi-coloured pooches who joined the masses for the route along the beach. Participants came from all over the south west to take part, for various reasons.

Stephanie Lear, 25 from Worle, had been looking for an event like this for years:“I’d been planning on going all the way to Las Vegas to do one but now there’s one in my home town…no better place! It was amazing.”

Stephanie ran with her friend Katie Konstanz, 25 from Kewstoke, who added:“Best event ever. Amazing charity.

So much fun!”

Vicki (25) and Bev Moon (50), from Stockwood in Bristol ran to remember their aunty, and sister, Caroline Denyer who passed away at the Hospice in 2013:“The Hospice were and still are an amazing, supporting and giving place for people there and their families. They need all the money they can to carry on their wonderful work.”

Lois Miller (25), Coach of Cheerleading squad Weston Supernovas brought the squad along to take part together:“Weston Hospicecare is a charity close to some of our families. Our community does a lot for us to help us fundraise, and we wanted to give something back.”

Claire Dibben, Event Fundraiser at Weston Hospicecare said:“The atmosphere was incredible. The mass paint throw at the start was spectacular and those few seconds will stay with me for a long time.

“The joy of seeing so many people enjoying themselves and raising funds for the Hospice is incomparable. We cannot thank our Weston Colour Runners enough for coming along, showing their support, and getting into the spirit of the day. We’ve had fantastic feedback, and we can confirm now that we will be doing it all over again in 2015!” ©aerialcircus photography Over 100 volunteers helped on the day to make the event a huge success and local businesses also supported the event. Main event sponsors The Grand Pier, The Breeze, Freak Events and Bloxham and Barlow were responsible for dousing participants in paint. RJ Entertainment provided the soundtrack and The Kings Ferry shuttled participants from Worle to the event in their coaches.

Claire added:“Our events are always the combined effort A great day was had by all and for a good cause! of hundreds of people; without them we wouldn’t be able to provide such a great experience. Sunday was a perfect example of our community at its finest, supporting one another and doing something great for a local cause – thank you, on behalf of Weston Hospicecare to everyone who helped, took part, came along to watch and spread the word about this event.”

KEY STAGE FOR THE HIVE AS BUILDING CONTRACTORS HAND OVER NEW BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTRE TO ENTERPRISE AGENCY OWNERS The keys to The Hive, North Somerset’s landmark new workspace and business development centre which opens to tenants in May, were officially handed over from South West regional building contractors Pollard to owners North Somerset Enterprise Agency this week.

The Hive will support the launch, development and success of start-up and growing local businesses by delivering an array of on-site business support from an experienced, knowledgeable and locally-based team of advisors, alongside a range of resources and services and some 20,000 sq. ft of rentable managed office space and communal facilities.

Based in the Business Quarter of Weston Park, in the Junction 21 Enterprise Area of Weston-super-Mare and on the former old airfield site,The Hive will provide 40-60 tenants with unfurnished offices, easy-in and easy-out terms, dedicated and secure broadband and a managed business reception, plus virtual office services, hot desks and meeting rooms to non-tenants.

The Hive will also be an enterprise hub for local firms to do business, benefit from advice, support and training from North Somerset Enterprise Agency and be able to meet, share experiences and network with other businesses.

The new development has been enabled by an investment from the European Regional Development Fund, alongside funding from owners North Somerset Enterprise Agency (NSEA), a not-for-profit organisation with social objectives, which will own, manage and be based at The Hive.

With the aim of stimulating, encouraging and supporting local enterprise NSEA has been helping new and existing small and medium sized businesses in the locality for over 25 years and in its time has helped some 3,000 new enterprises to start up and around 3500 local jobs to be created.

The delivery of The Hive results from a close working relationship between Pollard, the Somerset-based building contractor whose team has undertaken the project which took just over a year to complete, architectural practice AWW and project managers CBRE, who together helped turn the project’s ambitious vision into a reality.

Handing over the key to NSEA Chief Executive Angela Hicks on Monday April 28, Mark Smith, Contracts Director at Pollard said: “We are delighted to be delivering the keys for The Hive to Angela and her team.The development has been a partnership from the outset by all involved, which has been reflected in the success of the scheme.

“As can be seen here today, our client has an exceptional building in which they will be able to meet their objectives of assisting and supporting businesses to grow.We are proud to have played a part in that vision.”

Accepting the keys, Angela Hicks added:“The handover of the keys for The Hive marks a momentous moment for business support in North Somerset. Now, businesses in the area have a building they can be proud to be part of, can become involved with and within which they can access all the advice and support they need to startup and grow successfully.

“We are grateful to our project team, which includes CBRE, AWW, Pollard, the Sweet Group, Hoare Lea and Hydrock Structures for the hard work they have put into bringing our building to fruition. Once we have relocated our offices this week The Hive will be open for business, ahead of our official opening in July, and we greatly look forward to showing local companies the new facilities that are now on their doorstep.”

The Hive will feature an“Express Business Lounge”enabling people who need a hot desk facility in a smart professional business environment to buy space by the hour or day, sustainable transport options with pool cycles and showers and an electric vehicle charger and will be the home of North Somerset Business Club, which is run by NSEA. The building, which is designed to be energy-efficient and sustainable, incorporates many energy-saving measures, avoiding air conditioning and including natural ventilation and lighting, photovoltaic cells and solar panels on the roof.

Ian Hunt, Architect and Associate at AWW added:“We are proud to be associated with this building which will help new businesses in the area to develop and grow.This has been a particularly satisfying project for us which we hope will help the local economy and will lead to the creation of many new jobs.

“We are very pleased with the building’s green credentials – it has an “A”rated EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) which is very rare.”

HRH The Duke of Kent KG to visit the Weston-super-Mare RNLI lifeboat station During his visit to Somerset, His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent KG will be visiting the temporary RNLI lifeboat facility at Knightstone, Weston-superMare and hearing about the need for a brand new lifeboat station.

His Royal Highness The Duke of Kent KG who is President of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), will be visiting the charity’s temporary base in the town during the morning of Thursday 15th May 2014. This is part of a visit to Somerset during which it was suggested he included the RNLI at Weston because of the difficult circumstances the volunteers are working in at present as they continue to provide lifesaving cover in the area.

He will be accompanied by Lady Gass, the Lord Lieutenant of the County of Somerset, with invited official guests. He will be introduced to key volunteer members of the crew who have taken an active part in ensuring the successful move from Birnbeck Island to the temporary site at Knightstone.

Following this there will be a reception held at the Winter Gardens, courtesy of North Somerset Council, at which invited station personnel and fundraisers will be introduced to His Royal Highness.

In this role The Duke of Kent has attended many RNLI events, including the official opening of RNLI College

by HM The Queen in July 2004. In April 2005, at RNLI Headquarters in Dorset, he attended the naming of a new all-weather lifeboat, The Duke of Kent.

Don Sutherland, Chairman of the Weston-super-Mare Lifeboat Management Group said; ’This is an undoubted honour for our station and all the volunteers who run it, and a fitting tribute for all their hard work over the last year as we have coped with the changes of venue. 50,000 South West

Seniors call for “Minister for the Ageing Society” The body representing over 50,000 older people in the South West has called upon the main political parties to build into their election manifestos the creation of a new ministerial post to deal with the challenges and opportunities of our rapidly ageing society.

The South West Seniors Network (SWSN) has also prioritised new laws to provide greater safeguarding from abuse for frail, older people and changes to the tax system which currently penalise those with modest pensions.

“We will shortly be heading into the next election,” said Brian Warwick, Chair of the SWSN,“and at our AGM we asked our members for their priorities. Every political party is well aware of the power of the ‘grey vote’ – there are over 14.5 million people aged 60 and above in this country, most of whom vote, and we are looking to engage with the main parties on the policies that would win their support.

“We want all the parties to make clear what their policies will be on current benefits available to older people – especially bus passes and winter fuel allowance. The gap between seniors on low incomes and the rest of the community is also widening, especially those below the tax threshold who received very little help in the recent budget.”

The seniors in the region have also called for changes which would provide greater safeguarding for vulnerable adults living in care.“At the moment we have the nonsensical situation where someone living in care provided by the local authority has a greater level of protection and more human rights than those paying for their own care.

How can that possibly be right?” demands Mr Warwick.

Nicole to fight in June Nicole Flourentzou will be featuring at Weston’s Grand Pier on Saturday 14th June 2014 in ‘The Eagle Has Landed 2: a Martial Arts Extravaganza’.

Nicole will be fighting in the Boxing section against fellow female competitor, Natalie White from Malvern Martial Arts Club in Worcester. Nicole has been training at Strikeback Gym with Boxing and Fitness coaches Greg Miller & James Lucas, with the aim of representing the Gym in Female Boxing starting with the Pier Show.

Nicole is a true local Weston girl having been born and raised in Worle, attending Priory School. Nicole is considered a naturally-gifted sports person who excels in all areas of sport. Nicole began to play football as a four year old, playing for local boy’s club Kewstoke FC, growing into one of the most talented players in the squad as well as the tallest.

Since 2008 Nicole also has also played for “Team Mendip” - the only all-Female football club in the region - playing for both clubs as well as representing the County of Somerset.

Nicole is now awaiting her 16th birthday so she can join Mendips Ladies team, however Nicole’s sporting abilities have seen her represent Priory School at

Netball, Rounders and Football - excelling in all areas of her Physical Education lessons.

Nicole got involved with Strikeback Gym primarily to improve her level of fitness when Chairman of Mendip, James Lucas, put on summer boot camp sessions for the Mendip players. Nicole enjoyed the sessions and showed a particular aptitude to the boxing elements which encouraged her to attend Strikeback’s boxing sessions.

After only attending for a few months, Nicole was already sparring with the men at the club and found that learning techniques and movement in the sport came easy to her.

Now the coaches feel that, with her level of ability and skill, she is ready for her first fight at the club’s own very successful Extravaganza - which will feature a total of 22 bouts of Mauy Thai, Kick Boxing and Boxing – with Pro-Am English as well as British & Commonwealth Titles up for grabs, which will be presented by threetimes British Strongest Man, Laurence Shahlaei.

Travellers Rest fter the King’s Head pub was recorded in Worle in 1620, the next noted establishment was ‘The Traveller’s Rest’ It’s location is another mystery because, other than that it was situated in Worle, the exact location was not recorded. In 1746, John Robbins was ‘bounded’ by a recognisance allowing him to keep ‘a common alehouse or victualling house’ in the house in which he currently lived and known by ‘the name or sign of the Traveller’s Rest.’ The term was for a year, and providing he did not allow any unlawful games or disturbances on his premises, then it would remain in full force.

Robbins surety was a gentleman by the name of Thomas Harker, another inn keeper of Worle, but the name of his establishment was not noted.

A John Robbins appears in the Churwarden’s Accounts as Saxton of St. Martin’s Church during 1705 and again in the Overseers Accounts several times between 1728 and 1745 when various expenses were paid to him for hospitality such as food, drink and even lodgings. He can also be found listed amongst the recognisance at the Quarter Sessions from 1734 up until the last one in 1746 when the name of his house was given.

By the time of the Eighteenth Century the village of Worle had begun to spread down from the hill to the lower levels along what is now the High Street and Ebdon Road.

However, the upper part near to the church probably remained the more densely populated and important part, and was perhaps the more likely location of the two inns, the King’s Head and Travellers Rest.

Robbin’s connections to the church – who’s administrators apparently made frequent use of his amenities – suggest that it may have been nearby.

A later inn, that was known to have existed in Church Road, was called the Valiant Soldier and the building is still there to this day. Could it have originally been the Traveller’s Rest?

In the middle of their Lifeboat Pull, Weston-super-Mare RNLI volunteers were called out to save a jet ski in trouble.

The Weston RNLI Crew were taking part in the annual Lifeboat Pull when their pagers sounded off. A Jet Ski rider in Weston Bay had engine problems and was drifting dangerously.

Bank Holiday Monday was the time of the Westonsuper-Mare RNLI Lifeboat Pull. This is an annual event when a lifeboat is towed by Lifeboat Pull – Passing Marine Lake crew members and fund raisers along the promenade. The Pull starts at the Lifeboat Shop at Anchor Head and continues past the Grand Pier to the Tropicana. It then returns to Anchor Head with collection being made at all times. This is a joint venture between the volunteers of both the crew and fund raising branch. The crew wear their full sea going kit. This encourages the public to donate more money and means the crew get very warm on a hot day!

A temporary lifeboat station has had to be established at Knightstone Harbour in Weston when the RNLI had to leave its base on Birnbeck Island after 132 years. This was due to the access Pier becoming dangerous. This meant that there were two lifeboats available for the Pull. The usual demonstration D Class plus the relief D Class housed in the temporary station.

The crew were preparing the relief D Class when Richard Spindler, one of the deputy launching authorities noticed a jet ski had stopped in Weston Bay. He and the crew carried on preparing the lifeboat but kept an eye on the Jet Ski. A friend of the Jet Ski rider was extremely worried and it became apparent that the Jet Ski was still in trouble and was drifting in the strong tides of the Bristol Channel. It was getting near to the rocks when it was decided to launch the lifeboat and the pagers were fired off.

It took only a few minutes to launch the lifeboat down the slipway at Knightstone Harbour and within a very short time they reached the Jet Ski. The rider was taken on board the lifeboat and the Jet Ski towed round to the Harbour. There, the rider was helped ashore and he and his friend retrieved the Jet Ski. The lifeboat was then recovered and made ready for the parade.

The Pull was then able to start and it was a great success. The promenade was packed in the www.westonandworleview.co.uk

A grand total of Bringing the casualty ashore £878 was collected.

Charlotte Conroy, Lifeboat Operations Manager designate said; “It was fortunate that some of the crew were already at the station so were able to get to the casualty very quickly. The rocks in that area are treacherous with the tide running over them at great speed. We always stress the vital importance of maintaining craft, particularly in the dangerous waters around here.”

“The result of the collection at the Pull is fantastic and a great credit to the crew and fund raisers plus, of course, the generosity of the public.”

Ranger Service Guided Walks

A series of guided walks organised by North Somerset Council’s Ranger Service, gives you the opportunity to enjoy some beautiful scenery and learn about local history at the same time.

The first Sunday afternoon walk was led by Ranger Chris Richards and looked at ‘The Caves of Burrington’ on Sunday April 27th.

The walk looked at the recent archaeological research on the prehistoric use of the caves in and around Burrington Combe.

Aveline’s Hole, dated to the ninth millennium BC, is the earliest communal burial site in Europe and Read’s Cavern showed ritual activity during the Iron Age.

Walks planned for the future are: Sunday 25th May – Crook Peak Sunday 15th June – Anchor Head, Weston-super-Mare Sunday 27th July – Mining at Winford Sunday 31st August – Ashcombe Park Weston-super-Mare Sunday 28th September – Old Banwell Sunday 26th October – Weston’s Part in The Suffragette Movement Each walk starts at 2pm and lasts for around 21/2 hours. There is a charge of £3.80 per person and no dogs are allowed. There’s no need to book - just turn up on the day!

3095 private Frederick William Neads was born to Fred and Sophia (nee Durston) Neads, in Worle, in April 1894. He is shown in the 1901 census, aged 3, as living in 3 Bisdee Villas, Upper Worle. In the 1911 census he is then living, aged 17, in New Cottage, The Scaurs, Worle. After attending the local school he appears to have followed in his father’s footsteps, a stone mason, since his occupation in the 1911 census is given as a mason’s labourer.

It is possible that Frederick and his father worked for the same company, a general builder. Frederick moved to Wales, where he met and married Blodwen Hillier, in Merthyr Tydfil, in late 1913. Blodwen Was from a coal miners family. Frederick and Blodwen had a son, Marquis Frederick William, in 1915.

Frederick enlisted, in Weston-super-Mare, in the 12th (Service) (Bristol) Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment. Unfortunately, he was killed in action in France, on 25th August 1918 and has no known grave. He is commemorated on Panel 6 of the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, west of Haucourt.

Frederick was just 23 years old. He was awarded the Victory and British War medals. His widow, Blodwen, re-married William Jonathan in 1919.

Unfortunately, I do not have a photograph of Frederick.

Vulcan to return to air festival

The mighty Avro Vulcan Bomber has just been confirmed as one of the headline displays on Sunday at this year’s Weston Air Festival taking place on the 21st and 22nd June.

The Avro Vulcan XH558 returned to flight in 2007, following an award winning restoration programme. As the last airworthy Vulcan, she returned triumphantly to the air display circuit in 2008 and has been a significant crowd puller at every show at which she has since appeared.

Councillor Felicity Baker said “ We are delighted the magnificent Vulcan will be appearing at our Air Festival once again. This iconic aircraft is a huge hit with visitors whenever it flies, and promises to be a firm crowd favourite.”

More spectacular air displays will soon be revealed. The beach lawns will also be packed with military displays, attractions, activities and performances over the whole weekend, so don’t miss out on the fun!
