Weston and Worle View - November 2013

Page 1

A word from the Editor Welcome to the November issue of the Weston & Worle View. Thanks for all the great comments we have received regarding our new Cheddar Valley View magazine. After 3 years of publishing the Weston and Worle, we thought that the time was right to launch a new FREE magazine, especially as we have the largest distribution of 45,000 copies, delivered door to door, in the area. We are looking forward to publishing more magazines for different areas, in the near future. We would like to thank Pulse Radio in Cheddar for their help with the publication of the Cheddar Valley View. The magazine will focus on the new radio station’s activities and broadcasting schedules, while broadening it’s features Council News and editorials.

Share a home, change a life! New carers are being sought to join the ranks of a life-changing Somerset support service.

Your North Somerset Event 2014 - Sunday 26th January 2014 North Somerset Council, in partnership with our sponsors, are again running the popular Your North Somerset event at the Winter Gardens in Weston-super-Mare. This year we are focusing on “Digital Inclusion” and asking stand holders to encourage people to participate in the digital media age. We will be setting up an IT suite supported by volunteers to give hands-on demonstrations on how to access services on-line. We are also asking stand holders to publicise services they offer on-line. The event will feature a wide range of food-tasting, entertainment, dance and fun activities for both adults and children. We are again asking, where possible, if you could run a simple activity for children from your stand, as this enables adults to spend longer concentrating on the information provided by your organisation. We would be grateful if you could confirm if you would like to support the event, the number of stands you require and any specific requirements you have for the day including power. Please can you provide this information by Friday 29th November, as space is limited and stands will be allocated on a first come basis.

Somerset County Council’s Shared Lives scheme offers a home and support for adults with learning disabilities or mental health difficulties, as an alternative to residential accommodation. More than 150 people are currently cared for in this way, by the 90 registered share lives carers in the County. They live with and become part of the carers family in what is often a truly life-changing experience for everyone. National Shared Lives week (21-25 October) celebrated the real life success stories behind these statistics, and the Council is urging more people to come forward and take up the role of a Shared Lives carer. The Mendip area in particular needs more recruits. The authority is also encouraging people with learning difficulties, and their families, to consider if Shared Lives might the right choice for them. Stays can be for any length of time, from a weekend to give carers a break, to longer-term, with some placements still going strong after 15 years. “A shared lives placement can be a perfect arrangement for many people, leading to life-long friendships,” said Cllr William Wallace, Cabinet Member for Adult social Care.“It can transform the life of someone who would otherwise find it hard to become an active part of their community and be hugely rewarding for the carer too.” Shared Lives carers are paid £375 per week and get on-going support. Anyone over 18 can apply, whatever their background or marital status and whether or not they have children.

Anyone wanting to find out more about becoming a Shared Lives carer in Somerset can call 01823 257908 or email sharedlives@somerset.gov.uk Call 01934 820041

surprisingly, the United States Air Force who bought ten for use in the UK to move crews and officers about. Sadly no examples of the design survive today.

His father, Percy Scudamore, was the first driver and it attracted much attention. As a boy, Keith often went on trips if there was a spare seat. The coach is parked at Marine Parade, Weston-super-Mare outside the WEMS Garage, formerly Burnells. Keith thinks the livery was a soft grey with maroon stripe, and looked great!

Incidentally, perhaps Whitson’s greatest claim to fame was that they built the bodywork on the famous Green Goddess fire engines.

This observation coach body style was built by James Whitson & Co. of West Drayton, from the late 1940s onwards. The WEMS example (DFR 395) was one of the first, and was used by the company until 1960. Some, such as this one, were built for front-engined coaches, and a later version was made for underfloor-engined chassis such as the Regal IV, the Leyland Royal Tiger and - most commonly - Fodens. The total number built was probably only about 25, of which the largest customer was A very special thank you goes to: Keith Scudamore and Classic Buses Website for their kind co-operation and collaboration with this editorial.

Percy Scudamore worked for Flossie Burnell, who owned Burnells Coaches of Westonsuper-Mare from 1945 to 1950. Keith remembers that in those days all the coaches lined the prom with the drivers touting for customers to take them on afternoon trips – the highlight often being an afternoon mystery tour taking in Cheddar, Axbridge, and Mrs.Tilley’s for afternoon tea (2 boiled eggs for the driver). When Flossie died the company was taken over by WEMS. WEMS Coaches were eventually taken over by Bakers Coaches of Weston-super-Mare in 1981. They subsequently acquired Dolphin Travel and became ‘Bakers Dolphin’; still operating today. Our thanks to Keith for a fine photograph and the interesting background information.

Wavering Down

I

f you’ve ever turned off the A38 on your way to the Webbington Hotel, you may have noticed, as you pass through the village of Cross, a faded pink house set back from the road. With two horse sculptures either side of the house name, decorative features and statues scattered about the front lawn, this pleasant looking house is Wavering Down; the one time residence of Frankie Howerd and his manager/ partner Dennis Heymer. Frankie bought the house in 1971 and lived there until his death of a heart attack in 1992.

An aerial view of Wavering Down taken by Rich Collar of Aerial Circus Photography.

The portrait commissioned by the Queen Mother.

‘titter ye not! With the kind permission of the most recent owners, Bernard and Jean Ladds, we were given a chance to have a glimpse inside and Bernard was good enough to show us around. First impressions were of a living museum. But not cold . . . a warm and cosy one. The house is full of nostalgia and memorabilia. The walls are covered with pictures and posters from Frankie’s long career. The sideboard drawers are full of scripts and scribblings written by Frankie; as well as those of his team of script writers, such as Barry Cryer and Eric Sykes. The living room is particularly fascinating. A portrait of Frankie hangs above the fireplace, commissioned by his life-long fan, the Queen Mother. The tables and dressers are covered with treasured signed picture frames of his close friends; Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor (a frequent visitor) and Zsa Zsa Gabor, sit next to pictures of TV chums such as Bruce Forsyth, Cilla Black and June Whitfield (another frequent visitor). Bernard and Jean Ladds bought the house, contents and royalties in December 2010 from Chris Byrne, Dennis Heymer’s carer. After Frankie’s death, Dennis kept the house just as Frankie had left it. A very special thank you to: Bernard & Jean Ladds of Wavering Down for their warmth, openness and hospitality and Rich Collar of Aerial Circus Photography for his kind permission to use his imagery.

As owner, custodian and curator, Dennis Frankie’s grave in nearby Weare would open the house to the public a couple of times a year, as well as holding charity events and garden parties. This policy continued through the “Frankie Howerd OBE Trust”, until Dennis’ death in 2009. Frankie Howerd’s career is well documented, but the house itself had a rich history before his comedic presence. It seems Churchill stayed there a number of times and planted the fig tree in the garden; there are rumours of a Second World War bunker underneath the front garden and there’s a Royal connection from the 1930s. How many homes can boast such an interesting past? Wavering Down is unique. Not ostentatious in any way, just quirky. A house caught in a time warp. Bernard and Jean like it as it is and it’s comforting to know that Frankie’s memory and possessions are in such good hands. Liz Taylor’s favourite Chaise Longue

Demand Grows for the

Great Weston Ride

The Great Weston Ride, a spectacular city-to-coast challenge bike ride that takes place each summer in the West Country, has seen unprecedented levels of early interest in next year’s event. As a result, the organisers have opened the 2014 Ride Entry ahead of schedule for what will be the fifth outing for this fast-growing event. The 2014 Ride has been confirmed for Sunday 20th July and, after receiving rave reviews again from participants this year, many of whom are new to longdistance cycling, it seems that demand for the event is really taking off; it looks like the Ride will attract a record number of entries for the fifth year in a row. Ride Organiser, Darren McKimm, explained: “This year’s Ride went extremely well, we were blessed with good weather on the day, the atmosphere at the finish was fantastic and we also got some phenomenal feedback and comments afterwards from lots of riders, so obviously we’re delighted with how the event is evolving.” The Great Weston Ride also attracts far more women

than many other cycling events, in keeping with its links with British Cycling’s Breeze initiative. Riders have also helped to raise substantial sums of money for charity with the Ride’s official charity partner Prostate Cancer UK having received over £70,000 to date, while charity fundraising as a whole has reached £120,000 since the event began in 2010. Further information and details on how to enter can be found at www.greatwestonride.com

Mysteries of Stonehenge unravelled at Museum talk

Answers to some of the most popular questions on Stonehenge will be revealed through an illustrated talk at the Museum of Somerset this week. The talk, which takes place on Thursday 7 November at 7.30pm, is led by television and radio presenter Julian Richards, who has over 30 years’ experience in the archaeology field. Stonehenge is one of the UK’s most celebrated monuments, seen by over a million visitors a year, and with an image instantly recognisable around the world. Julian said: “Stonehenge has a fascinating history of investigation and speculation but now, at last, we are perhaps a little closer to understanding its mysteries.” Julian aims to answer, with the aid of cutting-edge science, some of the key questions about the site, such as ‘when was it built?’, ‘who built it?’, ‘how was it built?’ and, perhaps the most difficult to answer, ‘why?’ Cabinet member with responsibility for Heritage, Councillor David Hall, said: “This fascinating talk provides a unique opportunity to discover the secrets behind Stonehenge. The museum continues to expand its event programme with activities for all the family.” Tickets are £8 (booking advisable) and are available by calling 01823 255088 or emailing museumofsomerset@somerset.gov.uk You can also book tickets by visiting the museum - The Museum of Somerset, Taunton Castle, Castle Green, Taunton, Somerset, TA1 4AA.

148 Private Isaac Henry Hooper was born in Worle in 1874, the youngest son, to John Robert and Martha Hooper. In 1901 he is shown as living in the Scores (Scaurs) Worle.

After leaving school he became a member of staff for Messrs George Belle Vue Restaurant in Weston-super-Mare and later moved to South Wales, where he was to join the 1st Batallion of the Somerset Light Infantry. It is interesting to note that in the 1911 Census he is shown as living, along with 32 others, in Tylacelyn Road, Penygraig, Glamorganshire, where the head of household is given as 2nd Lieutenant Bennett. This was colliery accommodation. It is also of interest that he is now referred to as just Henry Hooper, the name that is commemorated on Worle’s World War One plaque. Henry, as he will now be referred to, was sent to France in August 1914 where he saw a lot of fighting. In the battle of the Aisne he had a narrow escape, when a shell fragment hit his knapsack. As a result of being taken ill he was sent to No. 10 Canadian Stationary Hospital, St Omer. He died, aged 27, on 2nd April 1915, not as a result of German action, but from cerebro-spinal meningitis. An event for the local business community to preview North Somerset’s new business development centre, The Hive, is to take place at the Helicopter Museum in Weston-super-Mare on the evening of November 21st. The event marks the first opportunity for start-up and growing businesses to find out about the flexible office space, virtual offices, hot-desking, meeting rooms and conference facilities that will be available when the The Hive opens in Spring 2014. The centre is being built at Weston Park, part of the Junction 21 Enterprise area of Weston-superMare, on the former Weston airfield site, close to the Helicopter Museum. It’s business community will enjoy a wide range of services and facilities including on-site business support from North Somerset Enterprise Agency’s team, the latest in technology for high speed communications, a managed reception, and events, networking and training regularly taking place. “There’s already a great deal of interest in The Hive ahead of its opening in May and, with just six months to go to occupancy, we felt that this would be an ideal time for businesses to be able to find

out more about the workspace, business advice and growth support that will be available to them” explains Angela Hicks, Chief Executive of North Somerset Enterprise Agency. The not-forprofit organisation with social objectives, has supported North Somerset’s start-up and small businesses for more than 25 years, will own, manage and be based at The Hive. “There is no other business centre in the region quite like The Hive and we look forward to telling our event guests more about what The Hive will offer and how it could help their businesses grow.” The evening comprises of short presentations and the opportunity to talk with The Hive’s management team. This will take place from 5.30pm on the 21st November.

Cycling in Somerset in all its forms

Saturday 21st September – Sunday 24th November 2013 - Weston Museum Free admission to exhibition, Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm The story of cycling is illustrated with wonderful examples from the North Somerset and Somerset County Council collections. This exhibition explores the development of the bicycle from its stranger earlier forms to sleeker modern shapes. Bicycles were first thought of nearly two hundred years ago, but early designs, though fun to ride, were impractical. Today’s bikes are comfortable and energy-efficient machines, useful for sport, recreation and travel. Come on a journey that explores the Somerset stories behind the bicycles and the people who made, decorated and rode them. With pennyfarthings, tricycles, tandems and more.

It’s the season that scares the pets!! The firework season is upon us and New Years Eve, also a popular firework time, is fast approaching. Are you ready? Some people may find their pets get anxious, whereas others will have phobic pets. All levels of anxiety can be dealt with to make fireworks much less stressful! A few key points are: •B uild a den now so your pet has somewhere to hide and feel safe. • Use a calming product near your pets den. • Ignore fearful behaviour and do not punish your pet. • Be around, as your presence will calm your pet. • Walk dogs early in the evening. • Keep cats in and lock the cat flap but make sure they have a litter tray. • Move rabbits into a garage or shed and cover them over. • Close windows and curtains to reduce noise and flashes. • Use distractions such as a new toy, radio or TV.

If you have any questions or need some advice please contact us on 01934 622022 or pop in for a chat.

Below are calming products that can really help to reduce anxiety:

Adaptil for dogs This is a natural pheromone that makes your dog feel safe and secure. When your dog was a puppy, their mother would have released the same pheromone to reassure them. It comes in a spray, diffuser or collar.

Feliway for cats Feliway is also a natural pheromone. Cats produce this themselves to mark their territory and smelling this makes them feel secure. Feliway comes in a spray and diffuser.

Zylkene for cats and dogs This is again a natural, calming product that is based on a milk protein. It is given once a day sprinkled on food. www.westonandworleadvertiser.com

Mobile crackdown hailed a succcess

An operation to target drivers illegally using hand held mobile phones resulted in 16 offenders being pulled over in just a few hours. Somerset County Council’s Road Safety Team joined forces with Avon and Somerset Police to highlight the dangers associated with the use of hand held mobile devices whilst driving. Officers spent several hours monitoring drivers on the A303 and the A3088 Cartgate link road near Yeovil. Offenders were given the opportunity of attending an awareness session and 15 drivers opted for this while the 16th was issued with a fixed penalty ticket. Terry Beale, Somerset Road Safety Manager, said:“The aim of the operation was to spread the word that using a hand held mobile phone is both illegal and dangerous and to try to educate drivers against their use. “Hopefully this operation will serve as a reminder to those caught and all of us that this dangerous practice is not acceptable on our roads.” For more information, contact Peter Elliott, Media Relations Officer, on 01823 355020 or email: pelliott@somerset.gov.uk

Balancing Act goes digital Residents are being encouraged to go online and use Facebook to help shape the future of Somerset County Council. More than 5,500 people have already attended the Council’s 16 public ‘Listening, Learning, Changing’ roadshows; speaking to Council staff and giving their views on the difficult issues involved in balancing the budget. By visiting www.sccbalancingact.co.uk, people can play the Balancing Act game – trying to balance the Council’s budget on a set of virtual scales, with weights representing income on one side and spend on services on the other. Through a Facebook page, they can also take part in a number of weekly short polls, running until mid-November, answering questions and giving their views on priorities. To find us on Facebook, visit: www.facebook. com/scc.thebalancingact To encourage people to get involved, those completing a poll can enter a free prize draw to win a Somerset Christmas hamper or one-month’s free membership to a Somerset leisure centre.

Vote S.T.A.R. Somerset Trust for Arts and Recreation (STAR), one of the Somerset County Council’s Chairman’s Charities, is appealing for support in a public vote to win a cash award. STAR helps support some of our 500 Children in Need and improves their lives by providing those little extras. This could be as varied as music lessons, sports coaching or as simple as a trip to the beach. Running until Friday 1 November, the Lloyds Community Fund provides grants to support more than 1,300 local good causes across England, Wales and the Isle of Man. There are four good causes in each community area. The two groups with the most votes will each receive £3,000 and the other two, £300 each. Votes can be cast online, in Lloyds branches and by SMS text message. For further details and to view STAR’s profile on the Community Fund website please go to www.lloydsbank.com/communityfund
