Funds for High Street Re-vamp Businesses across North Somerset have another chance to secure funding in a bid to spruce up the area’s high streets. North Somerset Council was awarded £100,000 from the Government as part of an initiative to revitalise ‘high streets’ and tackle the challenge of empty retail properties. After two rounds of allocations, funding still remains and businesses now have until October 21st to apply for a grant from the High Street Innovation Fund. In 2011, Mary Portas carried out a review into the state of the country’s high streets and town centres. The review set out a vision that high streets should become multi-functional and social places ‘where shopping is just one small part of a rich mix of activities.’ The report also said that high streets should ‘be ready to experiment, try new things, take risks and become destinations again’. The High Street Innovation Fund is available across North Somerset for start-ups, existing businesses and community organisations who have creative and innovative ideas to improve their businesses and the vitality and viability of their town. In the second round of allocations, a further nine projects benefitted from over £20,000 in funding. An independent panel considered all the applications and supported those which were innovative, had a clear business plan, were well researched and would attract a different customer base. Projects included a new tapas bar and restaurant in Portishead, a women only gym in Weston, support for a new community market in Nailsea, a café and cake making business in Portishead, an IT business in Weston, a new community

meeting place and café in Backwell, a social enterprise art and craft gallery in Nailsea, a food business in Yatton and support for businesses around the big lamp corner in Weston. As part of the High Street Innovation fund, free one to one sessions are also available via the North Somerset Enterprise Agency for any existing or ‘start up’ businesses occupying a retail unit. If you think your business could benefit from some independent advice or you are thinking of starting up on the high street and need some guidance then these sessions and their existing three day start up businesses course could help.

Tracing your roots Free family history advice sessions at the library in the Town Hall in Weston-superMare have proved so popular they are now going to be held every week. The popularity of tracing your family tree has encouraged volunteers from the U3A and Weston-super-Mare and District Family History Society to staff sessions every Saturday from 2pm to 3.30pm. Previously they were held twice a month. The volunteers are happy to help people researching their roots wherever the family comes from. North Somerset Library members also have free access in the library to Ancestry.com and the British Newspaper Archive. And from home with their membership number they can search Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Times Digital Archive and Nineteenth Century Newspapers. The library also has specialist books that can be reserved about researching ancestors including ones who worked on the railways or served in the military.

3088 Private Alfred Hinton was born in Worle in 1874 to Amelia and Albert. After leaving school he worked as a market gardener for his father, who owned Milton Nurseries. In the 1901 Census he is shown as living with his cousin, William Champion, at number 17 The Square, Worle. In 1905 his mother died. In 1910 his father remarried and Alfred moved in to live with his father and stepmother. He was later on employed by the Weston-super-Mare Urban District Council. In 1914 he met and married Clara Follett and they resided at Brentry House, Worle. Sadly his father died on the 5th March 1915, at the age of 62. At the age of 41, Alfred felt impelled to ‘do his bit’ and travelled to London where he joined the Army Service Corps (later to become the Royal Army Service Corps). On 15th November 1915 he arrived in France where, in April of the following year, he sustained a skull fracture from which he subsequently died on the 22 April 1916. He is buried in graver I.A.6, in the Malo-les-Bains Communal Cemetery, France. Although his fatal injury was probably not sustained in the firing line, he none the less died for his King and Country and will be remembered with other fallen comrades. FAMILY WALK ALONG THE PROM – SUNDAY 20TH OCTOBER
HELP US WIN THE FIGHT AGAINST HEART FAILURE
Once again the British Heart Foundation (BHF) will be holding the ‘Family Walk along the Prom,’ in Weston Super Mare on Sunday 20th October 2013. This event is in its third year and is a 2.5 mile family walk that begins at Weston General Hospital and will continue along the prom before finishing up at the Grand Pier, where they have kindly agreed to accommodate all participants at the end of the walk. This year we are also raising funds for the North Somerset Heart Failure Service (which is being funded by the BHF), as well as Weston General Hospital (Cardiology Department) which, as last year, is hosting the start of the walk. Mending Broken Hearts is the most ambitious research programme we’ve ever carried out. We’re at a critical stage in the UK’s fight against heart failure – please join the Family Walk Along The Prom and help us continue our vital work. We are absolutely delighted that well-known Charity Fundraiser, Paul Hobbs, has chosen to help the British Heart Foundation again in 2013. This year is a special year as Paul is celebrating his 20th year of Charity Fundraising. We’d love you to join in with the walk yourself and spread the word amongst all your colleagues, family and friends. The registration fee for the walk will be £5 per person which will include a medal for taking part. British Heart Foundation T Shirts will also be available for a suggested donation of £5. Introducing a new baby to your dog The sooner you start to prepare your dog for the arrival of a new baby, the better. The more time you spend on training him, helping him to adjust to the changes that are coming, the easier the whole process will be!
Things to do in the months leading up to the baby’s arrival • Ensure a basic understanding of good behavior including walking next to the pram and solve any behavior problems.
• Don’t place the baby on the floor with him and NEVER leave your baby alone with any dog. • Make sure he has enough exercise and things to do so he is not bored.

• Your dog should be healthy and up to date with his preventative healthcare. • Get your dog used to being alone for a few hours each day and in the areas he will be in when the baby arrives. • Bring new baby items in so that he can get used to them. • Teach your dog the difference between his toys and those that’ll belong to the baby. • Get a tape recording of baby noises so that your dog can get used to these ‘strange’ sounds. • Develop a routine that you intend to follow when the baby arrives to help him cope with the changes. • Bring home worn clothes of the new baby and allow your dog to sniff. Reward him if he stays calm.
Once the baby has arrived • Teach your dog how to approach the baby properly and gently. Allow him to make safe initial investigations and approaches. • Give treats and lots of praise when he behaves well around the baby. The weather has played a big part in business – hotels full, cafes busy, lots of events and activities and this has a knock-on effect to a lot of trades. I know we will be pleased with the final results, but the road improvements are causing some disruption to time tables. Never mind, a big building programme all over the county continues regardless – leading nicely on to our own expansion into The Hive – that’s the new three storey building on the airport site close to the Helicopter Museum, creating 50 plus serviced offices for new start up, as well as expanding business in the region. Lots still on the wish list – Tropicana, Ski Slope, big name stores opening in Dolphin Square. Save Birnbeck Island and no roadworks or potholes – can’t have it all can I? The big stuff – property values, exports, exchanges rates, FT index – all showing improvements at last and confidence is in increasing daily along with a steady decline in unemployment. So set some new targets, remember the SWOT rules and get ready for a time of expansion. One of our very newest businesses is PULSE Radio based in Cheddar. Nice people with strong focus and a good growth plan. I visited them last week and had a great time, almost 30 minutes, discussing our services and business in general. In fact we got on so well they have invited me back! Listen out for 104.4 fm – I think we all need to change to the ‘glass is half full’, turn up the switch to positive and ‘can do’ The harder we work the more luck we get! All the problems we come across in business can be turned into opportunities with good planning. We are on the Oldmixon Crescent until we move to our posh new building in the early part of next year. So call in and get some help with any problem you are experiencing. We are, after all, the ‘one stop shop’ for selfemployment and almost all our help is free.
