A Sampling of Course Descriptions Chinese
The theme of this summer’s Chinese program is the “Chinese Zodiac.” We will be learning Chinese language and culture surrounding the 12 zodiac animals. In language acquisition, we will learn how to use Chinese to say their names, describe their looks – including color and size, describe how they move, introduce their favorite foods, etc. For our cultural education, we will learn the legend of the 12 zodiac animals as well as its folklore variations and beliefs. The study of the traditional shadow puppet play will also be included as one of our cultural activities. In addition, various forms of folk songs and handcrafting activities will be presented to enhance our learning and enjoyment.
History: “Our American Society”
What does it mean to be part of a community? How do we identify ourselves as American citizens? How do we identify ourselves as World citizens? The goal of this course is to get students actively involved in the world around them and convince them of the importance of being an active and contributing member of American society (and a global society). The emphasis is on participation, which might include simulations, case studies, position papers, mock trials and debates, interviews, etc.
Natural Science
This hands-on program will teach participants methods of hydroponics and allow them to explore Westover’s functioning, student-built aquaponics system. Each participant will construct her own functioning, soil-free aquatic gardening system
and will acquire the understanding of plant life cycles, water quality, sustainability, and the principles of hydroponics.
Needle Arts
Learn how to knit your own fashion accessories with nothing more than sticks, string, and your imagination! Students will learn the basics of hand knitting, from choosing yarns and tools to figuring out how to read patterns. We’ll explore exciting online knitting resources, check out the work of today’s hippest knitting designers, and even touch on how knitting is making waves in the art world. Students can expect to finish a simple but fun project and take home the knowledge of how to keep knitting.
Painting
This course introduces the methods, techniques, and language of oil painting. Students explore principles of color, construction, paint handling, delineation of form and space, light and shadow, surface, texture, and composition. Students paint primarily from observation to navigate fundamental issues related to representational painting.
WISE (Women In Science and Engineering)
Participants will have the chance to sample a few of the many science and engineering fields during this hands-on program. They can construct a catapult, use drag and impact information to build a device to protect an item dropped from heights, investigate the chemistry of foods, and spend time in Westover’s various ecosystems discovering aspects of the environmental balance on campus.
