Nina Beier’s work ‘Men’ takes from the sculptural tradition of public equestrian. Beier zooms in on the ebb and flow of power through the element of the horse as elevating display structure for different male characters. The artist collected several found sculptures and put them into formation at the edge of the sea. This allusion to an army absurdly draws lines across time and place, as the statues are being engulfed and uncovered in the tide.

Since the dawn of the Internet our browsers have been anchored in the mythologies of early globalization and have taken names such as ‘Navigator’, ‘Explorer’ or later, ‘Safari’. This work is based on the logo of the discontinued search engine ‘Netscape Navigator’, which lost its web dominance to Microsoft Explorer in the late nineties. The sculpture is positioned against the backdrop of the natural spectacle of the North Sea, but out of sight a mesh of submarine communication cables, the physical make-up of the Internet, run along the seabed. How fitting that Westende, a municipality developed by the family of Paul Otlet, a prescient of the Internet, hosts this manifestation of an influential but short-lived Internet software application.

Monument for Cervus Vitalis #2 (Malus Sylvestris) 2015 Monument for Cervus Vitalis #2 (Malus Sylvestris) is a bronze statue of a red deer. Stief DeSmet emphasizes the fracture lines between the different body parts. Some segments of the animal’s body have actually been removed. These elements emphasize that the statue is not a complete whole, but a phase of a process. The artwork offers resistance to the stark design of parks, where artificial boundaries are often drawn between nature and culture. The fragmented work seems to embody the contradiction underlying the human urge to dominate nature.

EDITH DEKYNDT (BE) The Ninth Wave 2018

Edith Dekyndt sheds light on the natural processes within ecosystems. The Westfront monument stands on the spot where the sluice gates were opened in order to flood the German troops during World War I. The work is a performance showing a woman cleaning the virile statue of Albert I at regular intervals. During the war, women replaced the men in factories and farms, and many of them decided after the war that they would no longer agree to bear large numbers of children, partly for fear that their children might die in war. The title of the work is an allusion to an album by Kate Bush about a woman floating alone on the sea. There is a belief among seafarers that large waves come in threes, and in series of threes, the last wave of which is the most devastating. The title also refers to the waves that spread the flooding carried out in 1914.

The idea of a Holy Land, a promised place that helps to endure the present hardship, is a recurring theme in several religions. More than 30,000 North African colonial soldiers died in Europe during World War I, but their descendants were never granted rights to migrate to Europe so the idea of Europe as a Holy Land lives on. Attia's installation is a temporary monument that gives a respectful burial to the colonial soldiers as well as to the refugees that drowned in the sea on their way to Europe. As seen from the sea, the mirrors look shiny and attractive, but once approaching they merely reflect reality, embodying the migrants’ disillusion.

A monument is generally the representation of a person, represented in a majestic and serious style, mounted on a pedestal that lends the entire work a certain sacral quality. Bijl replaces the person with a dog, a twist that, with the earnestness of the scene, casts a doubt in the mind of the viewer as to whether the work is truly a tribute. Bijl attempts, in his work, to explore the ‘archaeology of our society’. In a broader context, this work leads us to pause and think about the legitimacy of monuments. Statues in public space are always subject to the zeitgeist, and so-called heroic deeds can, in the course of time, come to be seen in quite a different light. Every whelk (pronounced in West Flanders as ‘wullok’ rather than ‘wulk’) is fashioned with the secret logic of the sea: every part of the shell is in perfect proportion to every other part. Stief DeSmet tried to reproduce a whelk in line with its natural form. Knowing that he would fail in the endeavour, he made Monument for a Wullok a monument to the power of the sea and the secrets that it refuses to reveal. He allowed the salty sea air to conquer the bronze, which the artist forced, with visible seams and traces of the founding, to be modest in the face of a nature that will always be a superior ‘creator’.

The artist doesn't give a fixed explanation regarding what the sculpture means, and realizes that a wide range of meanings will be created by the viewers. He welcomes these interpretations, which are ever-changing depending on context and audience, and sees them as a contribution to the work. According to Gander, it is part of the human condition to like shiny things, as people get mesmerized by their own reflection.

In No Shooting Stars, an unidentified inhabitant of the open seas speaks about the seas’ mysteries while a dream-like background slides by, out of tune with the narration. The narrator – who might be a sea monster, a mermaid or an old sea turtle – has an enticing familiarity, but its identity slips away and the text meanders like a poem. Adopting a perspective of awe, Magdy recognizes there are limits to our knowledge regarding the oceans. Rather than getting involved in a struggle, Magdy abandons his quest and pays homage to the vastness of the oceans, turning the film into a meditation on its secrets.

With their monolithic posture and stark gaze, the Drie Wijsneuzen (‘Three Wise Noses’) of De Panne tower over the coastline. They are part of a tradition of heroic-realistic monuments such as the Statue of Liberty in New York, the Cristo Redentor in Rio de Janeiro or the Colossus of Rhodes. These are statues that served originally as beacons or signposts and have now become tourist attractions in their own right. The ‘wise ones’ gaze over each other’s heads toward England, France and Belgium respectively. Their enigmatic knowledge extends presumably in the direction of those three regions, but reaches much further still.

At the entry point of the city of Knokke-Heist, Jean-François Fourtou constructed a tower of beach cabins. The tower looks as if a storm has lifted the cabins up in the air and has thrown them around, after which they got stuck together in a formation by coincidence. Given his fascination for architecture, it is logical that Fourtou chose to work with beach cabins, the most typical architectural structure along the Belgian coast, which has a differently regulated size and shape in each coastal municipality. The sculpture gets the allure of a totem that embodies the whole coast.

Beaufort is a triennial art project that is held along the Belgian coast. The artists of Beaufort 2018 explored the role of monuments in public space: how do they provide meaning, how are they interpreted, and to what extent does their message remain relevant?

LOCATION Maurice Lippensplein, Knokke-Heist

Beaufort 2018 is also a thought exercise about the problems of climate change. Ecological changes compel us to make adjustments to our lifestyle so that the earth may remain liveable. Our vulnerability is even more tangible on the coast. The artists of Beaufort 2018 address the changing relationship between humans and nature and pay tribute to the almighty sea.

Katja Novitskova focuses on how the size and type of an image and the way the image reaches us, influences our interpretation. The Earth Potential sculptures feature online-sourced images created through advanced imaging techniques like a microscope or a satellite orbiting the Earth. She combines images of Earth, distant moon, and enlarged, seemingly alien but actually terrestrial, organisms like E.coli bacteria, the roundworm C. Elegans and a gecko, reflecting on dichotomies between reality and fiction that arise from visual media. Through scientific and poetic lenses, Novitskova reflects on the ways in which Earth’s creatures have a potential to look at each other and identify mutual bonds.

Van Simaey remembers that his parents used to do an extra turn at roundabouts to make the children happy, leading him to think that roundabouts existed solely for that purpose. The dysfunctional traffic circle is unquestionably a surrealistic installation. The cheerful scenes that took place at and around the roundabout are now just a vague memory. It can also be a symbol of a moment of impasse. There is only the constant, autonomous rotation, the fully automated functioning according to old patterns, in the emptiness of an already perfect world and the static roundabout.

Anne Duk Hee Jordan uses a large volcanic stone in her installation. Such stones were brought to our region by land ice during the Ice Age. The stone is suspended between two buoys and looks as if it were held up by a net. This illogical construction creates a tension between perception and reality, and raises the question of how the stone ended up there. By natural means or through human intervention? The stone seems to have its own personality, as a witness that reminds us of the transience of human life in comparison with the immortality of the stone.

In Leon Vranken’s installations, geometrical shapes and taut lines often blend seamlessly into the mobile surroundings. The viewer often plays an important part in these compositions. Here, Vranken appears to have built an ad hoc monument, one that is not destined to last. Steps lead to a fountain, which by nature constantly changes shape. The fountain is thus an ambivalent symbol, and thanks to the unusual surroundings becomes a contrarian non-monument. Vranken allows the fountain to follow its course. His work resembles a ‘fata morgana’, a sculpture that imposes no meaning but invites the viewer to give the imagination free rein.

This statue is based on the Artemisian Bronze, a Greek statue from 400 BC that represents either Poseidon or Zeus. Xu Zhen copied the sculpture and put pieces of Beijing Duck, a Chinese national symbol, on its arms, thus mixing elements that are at the root of Western and Eastern culture. He acknowledges that in real life there is a reluctance towards cultural exchange, but criticizes a fixed understanding of our own culture that is based on mythology. The fact that the statue might be either Poseidon or Zeus is just one example that shows that historical interpretations are not as fixed as we wish to believe

This project is part of a collaboration with the Bruges Triennial. In Bruges, Rotor presents its research into the Chinese mitten crab, while on the beach in Zeebrugge, dishes based on this exotic crab species can be tasted each month. Larvae of the Chinese mitten crab came from China to Hamburg in the early twentieth century in the ballast water of freight ships. Today, this freshwater crab has spread and poses a threat to local biodiversity. Rotor developed a project that does not demonise the crab but looks for ways in which we can live with it. The possibility of eating the crab, which is a delicacy in China, is being given serious thought and critical appraisal.

Jason Dodge has installed a signal bell on the campus of the ‘Zeepreventorium’, which houses 200 children with chronic illnesses. A signal bell is used to communicate between ships and between sea and shore. In Dodge’s case, the bell is mounted with a view of the sea for only the children to ring, in order to communicate with passing ships. While the bell is installed at ‘Zeepreventorium’ and rung by the children who live there, the other citizens of ‘De Haan’ will hear their seldom seen neighbours ringing the bell.

The work is placed on private domain and intended to be listened to from a distance. Please do not enter the domain of the Zeepreventorium.

For the work Pattern of Activation (Mutation) that you can find on the beach of Bredene, Katja Kon. Astrid Novitskova has researched changes lainanthe ecology of the Belgian coast due to climate change and the construction of pipelines and windfarms, noticeable through the washing up of unusual animal bodies. If this change is slow to observe, she introduces a species manipulated to its utmost form, namely the C. Elegans worm. The worms are used in medical and biotechnological research. Since decades, the genes of the worm have been mutated so their test results are more readable, the very composition of the species needing to adapt along with technology. The work shows the eggs of this worm, blown up to grotesque size, like an egg nest of a futuristic mutant species or a small Stonehenge.
