PROGRAM 2023

A hundred years ago, the landscape of the Westhoek was transformed. Hundreds of cemeteries, monuments and permanent witnesses appeared among the picturesque villages, fields and quiet roads. During the LANDSCAPES | Feel Flanders Fields theme year, Westtoer and Visit Flanders take you to this landscape.

This theme year builds on the strong reputation that the Westhoek, and Flanders acquired during the centennial remembrance of WWI from 2014 to 2018. It is already clear: both individual visitors as well as (school) groups from home and abroad will be welcomed with open arms.

With a broad program of exhibitions and events, landscape art and AR experiences, numerous cycling, walking and sailing routes, LANDSCAPES | Feel Flanders Fields allows the landscape of the Flanders Fields region to speak for itself from 29 April 2023 to 31 August 2024. The focus will not only be on the region’s rich war history, but LANDSCAPES | Feel Flanders Fields also looks ahead to the future and asks how we will leave the landscape behind.

Venture out and about with family or friends, young and old, wander among the music, history, art and recreation. Experience the Westhoek and… Feel Flanders Fields.

FOUR SURPRISING THEMES

Landscapes | Feel Flanders Fields presents a range of themes and tells the story of the Westhoek as a final resting place, it touches, moves and gets you thinking through artistic reflections, previously unheard voices from the war past take you in tow and new interpretations of the landscape bring unseen (in)sights to light.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s military cemeteries are spread throughout the Westhoek. They are witnesses of the ‘Great War’. Each site is unique and reveals the story of the victims buried there and

Children get active with a customised do-booklet: how many tigers, elephants or springboks can they count on the regiment badges on the graves? Which nationalities can they find? An audio guide designed especially for them takes families to carefully selected sites. You can collect the do-booklet and scavenger hunt map about Menin Gate for free in the CWGC information centre on Menenstraat.

Commonwealth War Graves Commission

Over half a million Talbotousians, as founder Tubby Clayton liked to call his loyal visitors, frequented Talbot House during the First World War. Human need remained high after the war. With his pilgrims and their families, Tubby visited the graves of deceased comrades for years. Furthermore, they established the global Toc H organisation together, which helped veterans and their families rebuild their lives. In this temporary exhibition, you discover the anecdotes behind the pilgrimages and the stories of the more than 1,000 Toc H clubs.

There is a new family activity in Talbot House! Jeanne Battheu is invited to a soldiers’ party in their new home, Talbot House. Together with a soldier, Arthur, and the house cat, Duchess, you explore the entire house, from the cellar to the attic. With the help of numerous films and tasks, you discover the old chest filled with soldiers’ items and a free copy of ‘Het boek van de Generaal’.

WAR DEAD IN ZONNEBEKE CASTLE GROUNDS

In 1917, hundreds of German and allied soldiers died on the castle grounds of Zonnebeke. This exhibition introduces you to some of the boys who fought and died on the grounds around today’s museum. An online expo takes a closer look at the events in the park in 1917. After the exhibition, use the free walking brochure to explore the park: a path leads you past places where bodies were exhumed. They are marked with ‘reflection points’, beacons recalling the tragedies that took place there.

Invisible Landscape: works of art by the Stroroute and Broodseinde (p. 25)

During the tour, children can have fun at the many play facilities along the route.

The crypt and the ruins of the first Yser Tower remained underexposed for a long time. This exhibition changes that.

In the panoramic room of the tower, you experience the transformation of the landscape: you relive the construction of the first tower and the flooding during WWI. A digital dimension shows you traces that previously remained invisible. This expo can also be visited by families.

THE FRONT EYE

The brand-new platform ‘The Front Eye’ in the Hooge Crater Museum allows you to look out over Hill 62, Hill 60, the Hooge Crater Cemetery and the Kemmelberg. Here, the minimal height differences determined how the war progressed. Now, you can really see that for the first time.

The Scars exhibition shows how the landscape of the front evolved into a peaceful commemorative landscape. The storytellers are artistic characters. They refer to the injuries, the scars (or ‘liksems’ in West Flemish) that we can still recognise today.

You take in the landscape by exploring and experiencing it. That’s why, on request, a guide could take you in tow past numerous relics and stories of the First World War.

MODDERLAND (‘MUDLAND’)

CYCLING FESTIVAL

When WWI ended on November 11, 1918, Flanders Fields had been recreated into a moonscape. Millions of people felt the impact of 4 years of war. Yet almost exclusively men were speaking out. Women’s role in the Great War often remains underexposed. Therefore Modderland selected 10 international female artists. They connect the scars of war in the Heuvelland with 1 musical thread. Modderland includes 2 parts: the Cycling Festival, organized during the weekend of 19 – 21 may 2023: experienced guides will accompany you to WWI sites in the Heuvelland region. On every spot, one female artist will give a mini-concert with songs she composed for the occasion.

New, poignant stories of fallen soldiers are being added to the existing Last Post App. All the histories are linked to the surrounding landscape as far as possible: maps take visitors to the place where a soldier fought, was injured, cared for, died or buried.

The stories are also the main theme of the four evocations. For this, the Last Post Association leaves its trusted location under Menin Gate and ventures into the landscape. The evocations zoom in on one or more stories and are linked to music and word. Of course, the buglers from the Last Post Association will be present.

A hundred years later, to the day, the inauguration of The Brooding Soldier and Guynemer Memorial is remembered with a unique commemorative weekend. An exhibition, tank rides, presentations, a staged aerial battle and musical events provide something for everyone. The highlight will be the bilingual storytelling concert ‘La vie de Guynemer’ with Wannes Cappelle, Jo Lemaire, Lady Lynn and Wim Willaert, supported by Musique de L’Air and KMV Sint-Cecilia Langemark.

IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE

October 1914: the Ypres Plain became a water landscape. The Nieuwpoort hinterland, the entrance to the North Sea, was deliberately flooded. The German advance was stopped. From then, the ingenious lock and sluices system at Ganzepoort regulated the surface flooding every day.

‘Where Water Was’ is an immersive tour lasting one and a half hours, over and past the Ganzepoot in Nieuwpoort. The tour starts with an introductory film at the Westfront visitor centre and then leads you over the lock gates, on the water, via the well-known commemorative memorials to the end point. During the tour, the story of the surface flooding is depicted through an impressive audiovisual spectacle. The City of Nieuwpoort collaborated with the creators of ‘De Grote Schijn’ in Antwerp for this.

PEACE BRIDGE

The fortifications of Ypres, the City of Peace, gain their own Peace Bridge: a harmonious combination of art, monument and architecture. It is a memorial that inspires reflection.

The Peace Bridge is constructed of weathering steel. The guard rail is artistically embellished with the word ‘peace’ in 86 languages. The Peace Bridge is always accessible and forms a new powerful, artistic and multilingual focal point in the city: a statement of universal tolerance reinforcing Ypres’s message of peace.

THE LANDSCAPE BEARS WITNESS

A cemetery appeared on this location during WWI. It was excavated in 1968 and the soldiers were moved to Hoogstade, Westvleteren and Adegem. With respect for the history, the place was completely redeveloped to a new place for silence and gathering.

Nurse Ida guides you around the German Military Cemetery at Hooglede. 3RD GRADE OF PRIMARY & SECONDARY SCHOOL

‘The Salient Illustrated’ is In Flanders Fields Museum’s latest educational trip: with an interactive tablet workshop in farmstead Klein Zwaanhof and a tour of numerous British memorial sites, including the redeveloped site ‘Yorkshire Trench & Dugout’, the only authentic British trench in the North of the Ypres Salient that has been restored along its original route. The battlefield cemeteries Colne Valley Cemetery and Caesar’s Nose are also visited. Drawings of the British cartoonist Dave Chisholm’s are the guide to better read and understand the war landscape.

The First World War wiped villages off the map and destroyed families and friendships. In collaboration with the University of Kent, the Passchendaele Museum has organised a theatre walk ‘The Path Back’: a mix of British, German and local stories.

Belgian Front Memorial Trail SPRING 2024

The Belgian Front Memorial Trail is a walking event for experienced and less experienced hikers. The trail starts in Messen at the French border just before sunrise and ends on the beach at Nieuwpoort at sunset.
