POOL INTERIORS

IT’S WHAT’S INSIDE THAT COUNTS POOL INTERIORS

Before you set your heart on a specific shade of cerulean blue for your new pool, you’ll need to understand the different available finishes.

C

oncrete or fibreglass? Pebblecrete or gel coat? Vinyl or tiles? Ceramic or glass? The sheer number of available pool interiors can make your head swim! There is a finish to suit every type of pool, lifestyle, budget and location. Regardless of the ultimate choice, the final colour of your pool will also depend on other factors like depth and aspect in relation to sun and shade. The same finish can be quite a contrast on two different pools in different locations, so get some advice from a SPASA professional before you jump in.

Aggregate finishes

© Stock.Adobe.com/au/nmelnychuk

Commonly known as pebblecrete, aggregate finishes comprise small rock or glass pebbles bound with concrete or polymer modified cement. After the aggregate is applied to the pool surface, it can either be polished — creating a smooth finish that brings out the natural lustre of the materials — or the surface can be treated >

POOL INTERIORS

EACH TYPE WILL HAVE DIFFERENT REQUIREMENTS FOR MAINTENANCE, SO BE SURE TO FOLLOW THE MANUFACTURER’S AND INSTALLER’S INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY.

with acid to expose the pebbles or beads within the aggregate. Different sized and coloured pebbles or beads create varying textures and colour combinations.

Gel coat Fibreglass pools are finished with a gel coat that delivers a smooth non-slip finish, but there are many options available like marble-look or glitter, allowing you to tailor the look to your own sense of style. Gel coat layers have chlorine, UV and chemical resistance properties to provide a strong and durable surface. Fade resistance is a standard feature, but you’ll need to ensure regular water tests are carried out. Water testing ensures the water balance is at an optimum for swimming conditions, protecting not only your family, but also preserving the pool surface.

Vinyl Vinyl liners are large sheets of vinyl that line the internal surface of a pool. Affordable and nonporous, they can be cut to any shape or size. Vinyl liners are most commonly used when renovating existing concrete or fibreglass pools, but they can also be used on new pools. Vinyl liners are particularly suitable for pools where ground movement is an issue, as they provide a degree of flexibility that other interiors do not. They also have low maintenance requirements. Generally custom made to order, vinyl liners can be installed in any shape, size or brand of pool. They were once cut and welded on-site, but technology improvements mean they are now manufactured off-site, delivered in one piece and then vacuum fitted to the pool shell.

Tiles With pool tiling, the sky is the limit — you can choose any combination of colours, sizes and

8 | Choosing your Pool & Spa

colour effects to make your pool truly one of a kind. Fully tiled pools don’t just look great — they also offer ease of maintenance and cleaning. Tiles are more resistant to staining than other interior finishes and less likely to be negatively impacted by chemically unbalanced water. Tiles also feel beautifully smooth underfoot. Ceramic and glass mosaic tiling is a common choice for swimming pool interiors but, while the effect is stunning, it is more expensive than other interior finish options. For many prospective pool owners, the expense is worth it, as mosaic tiles give off a beautiful shimmer and make for a very inviting pool. If full tiling will blow the budget, you can opt to tile only to the waterline and/or the steps for a cost-effective, impactful option.

Stone Many traditional paving products can be used inside the pool just as successfully as around it. Natural stone such as travertine, granite or sandstone can be used for benches, steps and spas, but these products need to be fully and carefully sealed.

Maintenance As with any investment, it pays to take care of your pool interior. Each type will have different requirements for maintenance, so be sure to follow the manufacturer’s and installer’s instructions carefully. In addition, the chemicals used to keep your pool water clean and sparkling can be harsh on pool surfaces — especially if the water is unbalanced. Keeping your pool water within the recommended ranges will ensure that your pool interior will continue to look good for years to come. Some interior finishes are more susceptible to damage from water chemistry. When in doubt, ask a SPASA professional for advice.

WATER QUALITY

KEEPING IT CLEAN SANITISING YOUR POOL

Pools should be fun — but they should also be safe. Ensuring that your pool or spa water is correctly sanitised means you and your family can swim worry-free.

T

he primary reason for treating pool and spa water with sanitising chemicals is to prevent the growth of bacteria which would make swimmers and bathers sick. Using a sanitiser regularly will easily control bacteria. The dead bacteria is then removed by the filter as the water passes through it. There is a range of sanitiser options, from the well known (like chlorine) to the more obscure (like hydrogen peroxide with silver nitrate, or bromine), but for the purpose of this article we’ll focus on the most commonly used sanitiser: hypochlorous acid, aka chlorine. To keep on top of any additional bacteria entering the water, we need to ensure that a certain amount of sanitiser remains in the water — this is called the ‘sanitiser residual’. (In the case of chlorine, this is known as the ‘chlorine residual’.) It needs to be present in sufficient concentration to kill the new bacteria as quickly as possible. The primary source of bacteria might surprise you: it’s people! When we swim, we introduce bacteria into the water via our skin, hair and swimming costumes. That’s why it’s recommended to shower before swimming. Other sources of bacteria include top-up water and debris, such as leaves, grass, dust, etc. Animals can also contribute significantly to bacteria levels. In fact, a large dog can contaminate up to 20 times the volume of water that a human can — a good reason to keep your pooch’s swimming sessions to a minimum. But don’t be alarmed! The general rule is that most harmful bacteria will be killed when exposed to a free chlorine residual as low as one milligram per litre — that’s just one part per

10 | Choosing your Pool & Spa

million. By regularly testing the water and adding the required amount of chlorine, a residual level of 1.0 to 2.0 ppm can be easily maintained.

Types of chlorine Chlorine is available in a number of different forms: granular, liquid or tablet. It can also be stabilised* or unstabilised*. Chlorine can also be generated by a salt chlorinator. (More on that later.) Each of these different forms has its own features and benefits. For instance, granular chlorine is convenient, easy to store and relatively cheap. However, it cannot be dosed automatically, meaning that you’ll need to test the water and add it to the pool manually to ensure the pool has the correct level of chlorine. On the other hand, liquid chlorine is bulky and can’t be stored for long periods — but it can be dosed automatically. All of these forms of chlorine will effectively sanitise your pool, so choose the type that best suits your budget and lifestyle. A SPASA professional can advise you on the best choice for your circumstances. No matter which form you decide to use, the requirement for a residual level of chlorine of 1.0 to 2.0 ppm remains the same. *Stabilised chlorine combines chlorine with isocyanuric acid, which protects it from UV rays as they drastically reduce chlorine’s effectiveness. If you don’t use stabilised chlorine, you can add isocyanuric acid to the pool manually. Please note that if isocyanuric acid (stabiliser) is being added to the pool, you need to periodically check its levels in the pool. Unlike other pool

© Stock.Adobe.com/au/Gorilla

chemicals, stabiliser does not get used up when it’s doing its job. If the stabiliser level gets too high, it can actually inhibit the effectiveness of chlorine.

Salt chlorinators Unfortunately, a salt chlorinator doesn’t give you an ocean-like saltwater pool. (Sorry to burst your bubble!) But what these nifty systems do is generate chlorine on-site using a process of electrolysis to convert sodium chloride (salt) into hypochlorous acid (aka chlorine). Salt chlorinators are available in different sizes to suit differentsized pools. Ensure the unit you select is capable of producing sufficient chlorine to meet your maximum requirements. Again, a SPASA retailer, service technician or pool builder member can advise you on what’s best for your circumstances. No matter which size you choose, bear in mind that you may still need to add extra chlorine from time to time to ensure a sufficient residual level of chlorine is maintained.

The ‘chlorine smell’ The name ‘chlorine smell’ is a bit of a misnomer. That so-called chlorine smell doesn’t, in fact, mean that a pool has too much chlorine — quite the opposite, in fact. While it may seem counterintuitive, not having enough chlorine in the pool is what causes the ‘chlorine smell’. As chlorine comes into contact with ammonia-like contaminants in the pool, it creates compounds called chloramines. It’s chloramines, not chlorine, that cause what we think of as the

chlorine smell — and they also cause sore eyes and itchy skin. To get rid of chloramines, the pool will need to be superchlorinated. This is where an extra dose of chlorine is added to take care of the chloramines. A SPASA professional can advise on how to superchlorinate your pool.

Heated pools A heated pool needs more chlorine than a non-heated pool. This is because chlorine is used up much more quickly in hot water. Stabilised chlorine products should not be used in heated pools as their effectiveness is greatly reduced.

KEY POINTS • Always maintain a chlorine residual of 1.0 to 2.0 ppm (milligrams per litre). • Select the product that best suits your needs: granular, liquid, tablet or salt chlorinator. • Isocyanuric acid (stabiliser) helps protect the chlorine from UV rays. Stabiliser levels need to be checked periodically as too much stabiliser can inhibit chlorine’s effectiveness. • A ‘chlorine smell’ doesn’t mean the pool has too much chlorine — rather it means there’s not enough chlorine. • A heated pool will require more chlorine. • Never, ever mix chemicals! Even mixing different types of chlorine (liquid and granular, for instance) may result in a fire or explosion. Always follow instructions carefully.

FACTSHEET ELECTRICAL SAFETY Australian Electrical Standards are designed to ensure your safety is not compromised when it comes to pool safety. A pool and/or spa can provide years of entertainment and pleasure for the whole family, but when it comes to safety, what you can’t see can harm you. Electrical safety cannot be compromised, and the use of a qualified electrician is critical, and mandatory. Before you decide on your dream pool/spa it is critical to consider what electrical requirements may be relevant for your installation. A licenced electrician can assist you from the planning stage right through to the installation. SPASA has licenced electrical contractors in its membership base that you can contact for advice and to perform any work that you require. Some key things to consider:

Electrical Planning: Discuss the pool/spa you have chosen and the associated equipment with a licensed electrician before commencing the build. An electrical plan can save you thousands when prepared prior to work commencing. Your electrician will discuss with you: • The power requirements of your pool or spa • How many and what type of socket outlets you will need • What type of system you intend to run and if it is automated • What fixed metal items will be in the pool/spa area that need to form an equipotential bond to ensure electrical safety. (this would include things like reinforcing steel in pool shell, steel under tiles, ladders, fencing etc. within the 1.25m zone) This will allow your electrician to determine the power requirements to ensure safe operation of your pool or spa to protect you and your family. Understanding the location options for your pool/spa is also a valuable thing to discuss

with an electrician. Some slight alterations may prevent costly mistakes and minimise your expenditure. An outdoor ‘renovation’ often accompanies a pool/spa installation and planning for this means that you can identify any other electrical requirements you have associated with lighting and other appliances.

Electrical safety & fences: It is law that, for pools and spas where the structure is conductive, all extraneous conductive parts, including the reinforcing metal of the pool/spa shell or deck, shall be connected to a bonding connection point.

The bonding point shall be

installed when the pool/spa is installed and must be visible and accessible for future inspections and additions as required. Any conductive fittings within or attached to the pool/spa, such as ladders, diving boards, pool covers and fences, and any fixed conductive material within arm’s reach (1.25m) of the pool edge, such as conductive fences, lamp standards, windows, doors, pipework etc. must be connected to this bonding point. This work must be carried out by a licenced electrician. Remember that electricity and water do not mix, and this is important to ensure your pool is safe! Failure to install the bonding at the start could not only be dangerous should a fault occur, but also be very costly later, as you may then need to pull up pavers and cut through concrete to install the bond.

Electrical certification: Your electrical work must be done by a qualified electrician and meet Australian Standards. Ask to see the electrician’s license and by law your electrician must supply you with a Certificate of Compliance within 30 days of completion of your electrical works.

SOLAR POOL HEATING

HEAT KEEPING THE

Installing solar pool heating can increase the use of your pool by up to four months. By utilising the heating energy from the sun, it can be an economical choice. 14 | Choosing your Pool & Spa

hile the type of solar system may vary, the basic principles remain the same. Pool water is circulated through a series of tubes (the collector), usually mounted on the roof. Heat is absorbed and the heated water returned to the pool. The collector can be of either EPDM Rubber or PVC/TPR material and is usually supplied in multiple tube ‘strips’ or panels. The amount of heat absorbed and the ultimate increase in pool water temperature depends on several factors. Naturally, the major contributor to success with solar systems is sun exposure, so you’ll need to consider the following when choosing solar heating for your pool: • Size or area of the collector and the number of tubes or panels per square metre. • Location or positioning of the collector. • Control system.

Size or area The number of collectors used in your solar system will have a major influence on the effectiveness of the system. The size of the collector is usually expressed in square metres and, as a general rule, directly relates to the surface area of the pool. Australian Standard AS3634 suggests a minimum collector area equal to 60% of the surface area of the pool — only in

ideal* conditions — for systems in the Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong areas. *Note: The total collector area generally needs to be increased depending on variables such as: local climate, roof or pool, roof slope and orientation, roof type and colour, wind protection and collector type. Larger systems are needed where higher than average water temperature or an extended swimming season is desired. In accordance with the above, SPASA recommends a minimum area of 80% for the majority of installations. The ‘area’ referred to in relation to collector size is the area of actual collector strip NOT the roof onto which it is to be placed. Australian Standard AS3634 details the way in which the effective width of collector strip is to be determined for calculating collector area. The formula is N x (W + D) where N = number of tubes, D = tube diameter and W = web width between tubes. (The maximum web width which can be used is no more than one tube diameter per tube.)

Location and orientation Collectors (other than those on flat roofs) should ideally be placed facing north. Deviation is allowable as long as the collector area is increased accordingly. Avoid shade from objects like trees or neighbouring houses for at least six hours every day.

AT HANDOVER, THE POOL OWNER SHOULD BE PROVIDED WITH DOCUMENTATION CERTIFYING THAT THE SYSTEM HAS BEEN INSTALLED AND COMMISSIONED SATISFACTORILY.

Key points: • Ensure pool filtration requirements are met. • Ensure correct flow rates are obtained. • Circulated water should be strained.

Solar controllers As there is no guarantee of when the sun will shine, time clocks are of little use when controlling solar heating systems. A better option is a temperature sensing control device, which will operate the solar pump only when heat can be gained. Circulating water through a cold collector will cool the pool at a faster rate than it can be heated.

Handover and documentation The following factors will influence the optimum size and location of a solar system: • Pool surface area • Roof orientation • Shade on collector or roof • Roof colour

Pumping requirements Water can be circulated through the solar system by either the existing pool pump or a dedicated pump. If the existing pump is used it must meet the following conditions: • The required rate of turnover of pool water for filtration purposes shall be maintained. • The addition of a solar circuit must not increase operating pressure of the filter above the manufacturer’s maximum. • The pump shall have sufficient capacity to handle the static head and friction losses introduced by the addition of the collector circuit. The average domestic solar installation requires a minimum flow rate of around 100 to 200 litres per minute to operate effectively. In most circumstances this would mean a dedicated solar pump would be required. Always check that the minimum design flow rate of the collector is met when selecting a pump. This flow rate will vary with the diameter of the tubing used. The circulated water needs to be strained to avoid blocking up the collector with dirt and debris. When using a dedicated pump, some form of strainer must be provided.

16 | Choosing your Pool & Spa

At the time of handover, the pool owner should be provided with documentation certifying that the system has been installed and commissioned satisfactorily. The owner should receive documentation covering the following: • A list of all major components, including the size and make of solar collector, make and model of the control system, components and pump. • Copies of all warranties as issued by the manufacturers of the components and any warranties issued by the installer should also be provided. • Operating, preventive maintenance and service instructions describing start-up, normal running and shutdown procedures in an easily understood form. • A record of the date of the installation and the name and address of the contracting installer. Pool heating is a great idea if you want to make the most of your investment and extend the swimming season. To ensure value for money, consider using a pool blanket to increase the benefits of heating. POOL BLANKETS

COVERING UP Utilising a pool blanket will help protect your investment.

A

pool or spa blanket is more than a barrier for dirt and debris, it’s a valuable addition to your investment that will reap rewards in a multitude of ways. When the ambient temperature falls below water temperature (usually at night), it causes water cooling, evaporation and convection heat loss. Creating a barrier between the water surface and outside air will virtually eliminate these problems. Minimising evaporation not only saves water, but also the cost of chemicals required to rebalance the pool after topping up. It also lessens the amount of chlorine lost to the sun’s UV rays. Blankets keep the pool cleaner. When compared with using no blanket, about 80–90% of debris is kept out of the water, which in turn helps reduce load on your pool cleaner. Most cleaners will happily work under the blanket. Around 90% of heat loss in a pool occurs at the surface. Using a blanket means heating costs are reduced — by up to 50% in some cases. When using a blanket in conjunction with gas, electric or solar heating systems, significant cost savings can be achieved. Using a blanket helps extend the swimming season, letting you enjoy the pool for more of the year. Even without other forms of pool heating, the addition of a blanket can result in

18 | Choosing your Pool & Spa

a six- to eight-degree temperature increase in a pool that has a sunny aspect.

Installation When having a pool or spa blanket installed be sure it is a precise fit, as gaps around the edges will reduce the overall efficiency. Consider the finished look — there are plenty of options when it comes to retractable pool blankets, so make sure you investigate one that suits your sense of style.

Caring for your blanket Ensuring proper care and maintenance will extend the life of your pool blanket. These tips should help: • Don’t super-chlorinate while the pool blanket is extended. Leave it off the pool until chlorine levels are back to normal. • Always protect it from the sun while off the pool. It should be covered as soon as it is removed from the pool, either on a roller or when folded and stored. • Don’t leave your blanket on the lawn, where it may be damaged and also cause lawn burn. • Chlorine levels should not exceed 1.5 to 2.0 ppm for unstabilised pools and 3.0 ppm for stabilised pools. • Salt chlorinators and automatic chlorine dosers should be run at a reduced rate, particularly in winter.

FACTSHEET

SAFETY FIRST The backyard swimming pool is an Aussie icon, providing good times and health recreation for people of all ages. These simple steps can help ensure everyone stays safe. Swimming pools allow us to get together with friends and family and to share fun, fitness and relaxation. But they can also pose a risk. By following some basic guidelines, you can ensure the safe use of swimming pools and spas. • Supervise children at all times in and around the water. If you need to leave the pool or water area, even for just a moment, take your child with you. • Make sure your pool or spa has compliant fencing installed, complete with childproof locking. A swimming pool fence is not a substitute for adult supervision. • Ensure that furniture, plants, trees and other items that can facilitate entry over the pool fence are not accessible. • Be aware that hair, bathing suit strings and tassels, or body parts can become entangled in an improperly covered pool drain or suction point. • Display a resuscitation chart on your pool fence.

• Take a CPR course so you can act in an emergency if required. • Familiarise children with water and enrol them in learn-to-swim classes. • Make sure all pool users are warned against covering or sitting on drains and suction points. Doing so can cause injury or, in extreme cases, death.

Head Office:

• Never put your head under water in a spa.

• Empty paddling pools, baths, basins, sinks and troughs when not in use. • Drowning takes only a few seconds and is silent — don’t take your eyes off children when they are in and around water. • Most backyard pools are too shallow for diving. Place ‘No Diving’ signs around the pool. • Be aware that poorly designed pools and spas can create an entrapment hazard. Enlist a professional to check your pool and spa to ensure safety. Replace any broken or missing suction covers and have anti-entrapment covers fitted if needed. • Ensure that spas have a ‘Spa Pool Safety Rules Sign’ prominently displayed.
