MENTAL HEALTH IN THE WORKPLACE

Mental health issues are reported to affect 20% of the population, with depression and anxiety among the highest in prevalence and incident rates on the rise. The direct effects of emotional and behavioural disorders are clearly significant and distressing for the person, family and community.

H

owever, the impact of mental health issues to workplaces and employers has been less clear and received less attention to date. The magnitude of the issue both in terms of costs and the dangers of mental health problems to organisations should not be underestimated: there is a greater need now more than ever for business and employers to consider how to make work a safer place to be. Unlike physical illness and disease, mental health disorders as well as mental health prevention and treatment programs receive less attention and resources than other health conditions, largely due to a lack of understanding and the stigma surrounding mental health. Yet the results from the US National Comorbidity Survey reported that 18% of working adults said they had experienced symptoms of a mental health disorder in the previous month. Similarly, in a study examining the amount of money companies spent on medical cost for employees and the cost of lost productivity and absenteeism, depression ranked the first most costly health condition for employers, and anxiety ranked fifth - with obesity, arthritis and back and neck pain in between (World Health Organization-WHO). In Australia, the cost of workers compensation claims for stress-related mental disorders alone is estimated at a staggering $200 million every year (Australian Safety and Compensation Council), but the burden to businesses is far greater than just outgoing costs in insurance and compensation. The symptoms and behaviours associated with the more common mental

health issues of depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder, mental stress, bipolar disorder and ADHD can include: • Low mood, • Excessive worry, • Irritability, aggressive or unpredictable mood swings, • Sleep disturbance and fatigue, • Inattention and difficulty concentrating, • Clouded judgement, • Risky decision-making, • Disorganised approach to tasks, and • Social withdrawal. When these symptoms appear in the workplace, companies feel the repercussions through costly increases in: • Absenteeism, • Presenteeism (that is, being physically present at work but under functioning due to illness or injury), • Staff turnover, • Lack of engagement or negative commitment to work, • Lack of productivity, • Poor morale in work groups, and, critically, • Higher rates of workplace injury, accidents and unsafe work practices. The Australian Workplace Barometer (AWB) published in 2012 estimated that the psychologically unhealthy Australian workforce cost companies nearly $18 billion annually in lost productivity alone. Put simply by Professor Phyllis Gabriel of Cornell University: “The burden of mental disorders on health and productivity throughout the world has long been profoundly underestimated … mental health problems strongly influence employee

MENTAL HEALTH/WORKPLACE RELATIONS

WHEN IT COMES TO PROTECTING THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF ITS WORKERS, MOST COMPANIES’ PRIMARY INVESTMENTS HAVE BEEN IN ENGINEERING, PPE AND POLICIES. HOWEVER, INJURY AND INCIDENT DATA REVEALS THAT UP TO 95% OF WORKPLACE INCIDENTS DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY STEM FROM PERSONAL CHOICES AND PERSON-BASED ERRORS - TWO CAUSES PLAINLY AFFECTED BY MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS AND MENTAL STRESS.

performance, rates of illness, absenteeism, accidents and staff turnover.” When it comes to protecting the health and safety of its workers, most companies’ primary investments have been in engineering, PPE and policies. However, injury and incident data reveals that up to 95% of workplace incidents directly or indirectly stem from personal choices and person-based errors - two causes plainly affected by mental health disorders and mental stress. When 44% of Canadians reported in the Conference Board of Canada’s study ‘Building Healthy Workplaces’ that they’ve coped with a mental health problem such as extreme stress, substance abuse, schizophrenia, depression, burnout and addictions - but almost 50% of managers had no training in managing workers with mental health issues - it becomes clear that mental health awareness, prevention and treatment are a business priority.

What can employees do? It is not uncommon for workplace factors, such as bullying, burnout or harassment, to contribute to the onset of mental health problems, but organisations can still do much more than just implementing equal employment opportunity policies or diversity training as their sole safeguard against mental health issues affecting their frontline. Within the spectrum of worker health and safety, a concept usually considered solely in terms of avoiding physical illness and injury, sits a new idea in occupational health: psychological health and safety. Psychological health and safety refers to protecting the mental health of employees; similarly, psychologically healthy and safe workplaces are those that actively take steps in policy, leadership, work environments, HR practices and work management to promote worker psychological wellbeing and prevent psychological harm due to negligent, intentional or reckless acts. Psychologically healthy workplaces reduce risk factors for developing or exacerbating mental illness.

6

In a new set of standards released by the Canadian Center of Occupational Health and Safety, 13 organisational factors that impact psychological health and safety (termed psychosocial risk factors) are outlined in an effort to educate and promote psychologically safer workplaces among companies. The psychosocial risk factors include the way actual work is carried out, and the context in which work takes place (source: www. guardingmindsatwork.ca): 1. Psychological support - When employees perceive organisational support, it means they believe their organisation values their contributions, is committed to ensuring their psychological wellbeing and provides meaningful supports if this wellbeing is compromised. 2. Organisational culture - The degree to which a work environment is characterised by trust, honesty and fairness. 3. Clear leadership and expectations - Effective leadership and support that helps employees know what they need to do, how their work contributes to the organisation and whether there are impending changes. 4. Civilly and respect - Work environments where employees are respectful and considerate in their interactions with one another, as well as with customers, clients and the public. Civility and respect are based on showing esteem, care and consideration for others and acknowledging their dignity. 5. Psychological job fit - A good fit between employees’ interpersonal and emotional competencies and the requirements of the position they hold. This means that employees not only possess the technical skills and knowledge for a particular position, but they also have the psychological skills and emotional intelligence to do the job. 6. Growth and development - Employees receive encouragement and support in the development of their interpersonal, emotional and job skills. 7. Recognition and reward - Appropriate acknowledgement and appreciation of employees’ efforts in a fair and timely manner.

8. Involvement and influence - Employees are included in discussions about how their work is done and how important decisions are made. 9. Workload management - Tasks and responsibilities can be accomplished successfully within the time available; not limited to just the amount of work, but also the extent to which employees have the resources (time, equipment, support) to do the work well. 10. Engagement - Employees feel connected to their work and are motivated to do their job well. 11. Balance - Recognition of the need for balance between the demands of work, family and personal life. 12. Psychological protection - Workers feel able to put themselves on the line, ask questions, seek feedback, report mistakes and problems, or propose a new idea without fearing negative consequences to themselves, their job or their career. 13. Protection of physical safety - Management takes appropriate action to protect the physical safety of employees. When companies address the health and safety of the ‘whole’ worker, that is, the physical and psychological health of employees, the returns on investment are immense. By improving worker psychological health levels, the AWB estimated that between $18-32 billion would be saved in lost productivity alone. Add to this the saving in compensation claims, turnover and insurance premiums, and the performance benefits of driving a creative, engaged, cooperative workplace, and the benefit of psychologically healthy workers becomes evident. The future of healthier, safer and more profitable workplaces lies in investing in appropriate training of managers to become better leaders, access to mental health prevention and treatment services, and building a fair and just organisational culture that cares as much for its profits as it does its people. Better ways to respond to alcohol and drug problems in the workplace

© iStockphoto.com/DNY59

Alcohol and drug use is costing Australian Businesses $5.2 billion a year in hidden lost productivity and absenteeism. In a paper just written for the Australian Drug Foundation, workplace drug and alcohol experts Dr Ken Pidd and Professor Ann Roche report that alcohol use is responsible for 5% of all Australian workplace deaths and up to 11% of non-fatal injuries. Australian Drug Foundation Head of Workplace Services Phillip Collins said the annual cost of absenteeism due to alcohol alone is estimated at up to $1.2 billion. “The costs of lost productivity or absenteeism due to alcohol and other drugs are well hidden in most businesses,” Collins said. “Employers and HR departments simply don’t have enough information to attribute the days of work their staff are missing as being due to drug and alcohols use. “Alcohol and other drug use, especially when it’s outside work hours, is a hard issue for many businesses to deal with. Many resort to targeting individual ‘problem’ employees, which

is misguided. This paper we’ve just released about good practice workplace programs shows there are much better ways for businesses to respond.” “Businesses who implement good practice alcohol and drug programs use an approach tailored for their workplace,” said Colins. “Each workplace has its own unique customs, practices and conditions which impact the workplace culture and drug use, so there is no one-size-fits-all answer unfortunately. There are, however, four basic components central to any workplace alcohol and drug program: Workplaces need to develop and implement a sound formal written alcohol and drug policy which fits the organisation’s needs and addresses workplace-specific risks. Education and training about drugs and alcohol are necessary to ensure employees understand your organisation’s policy and have enough information about alcohol and drugs in the workplace including risks of harm. Employees need to have access to confidential counselling and treatment services, and they should be provided with paid or unpaid leave to attend sessions. By investing in providing access to these services, organisations can avoid the financial costs and loss of morale amongst co-workers associated with employee dismissals. Ongoing evaluation of alcohol and other drug programs is essential to long-term effectiveness. Like any business program, we need to regularly review and improve processes to make sure they reflect changes in the workforce or improvements that can be made.” Collins said a preventive alcohol and drug workplace program can help organisations of any size become healthier, happier and more productive. Gas analyser calibration rig The Michell Instruments’ Portable Calibration Rig (PCR) is a mobile gas blender using premium mass flow controllers housed in a tough transport case that can be used for a variety of applications and analysers. It can mix two or three gases from air, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, methane and hydrogen and is easily controllable so that the perfect blend can be achieved for the application. Provided the user has zero or spans gas cylinders available - it is possible to ‘factory’ calibrate an analyser such as Michell’s XTP601. For example, an analyser range 0-10% O2 in N2 could be calibrated with synthetic air and N2. A field calibration of an analyser can be carried out in under 1 h including set-up time. For a complete factory calibration, with multiple calibration points (to change the range/ background/both), 4 h would be all that is required. These timescales represent a minimal downtime compared to the alternative of sending the instrument away for calibration. Although the unit is designed for field calibrations, it can also be used in a laboratory to mimic changing process gases for research work. Keep a close eye on field workers’ safety with Lone Worker app An innovative mobile phone app is helping organisations improve the safety of their workers out in the field – with Melbourne water retailer South East Water launching Lone Worker on iTunes. South East Water’s General Manager - Corporate and Commercial, Phil Johnson, said one of the biggest challenges in the utility sector is ensuring the safety and security of employees who work alone in often remote areas. “South East Water has identified this risk and involved people from different areas of the business to come up with a revolutionary app to support our workers in the field,” said Johnson. “The Lone Worker app is a vital tool for improving safety and minimising risk in the workplace. It gives workers peace of mind to know that there will be a swift response to accidents or sudden illnesses and, if an emergency situation becomes apparent, the emergency services can be alerted immediately. T h e Lon e Wo rker app info rms colleagues, or an operations contact centre, by SMS and email if a worker is unresponsive. It also sends GPS details of the worker’s last known mobile phone location to ensure they can be located quickly. The app features two modes: ‘interval’ and ‘motion detection’. In interval mode, a worker can set the time they want to routinely check in and the app sends an alert if that time has lapsed. The innovative motion detection mode uses the accelerometer in the worker’s mobile device to detect a lack of motion over a period of time. This enables colleagues to be alerted in situations where a worker has collapsed, is immobile or is unable to respond.

“Many of our treatment plant workers and maintenance crews work in remote, and sometimes dangerous, locations. They can be exposed to snakes, spiders or rough terrain, and fire hydrant repairs are often carried out at night. In these instances, the Lone Worker app helps to keep our workers connected,” said Johnson. Ben Spedding, a South East Water treatment plant officer, has been using the Lone Worker app since its inception. “The app has prompted me to keep safety top of mind and to think about potential risks on the job. It’s also good to know that someone will be alerted if things go wrong,” said Spedding. “The Lone Worker app can easily be customised to suit the requirements of different work environments. It has applications for workers in building and construction, engineering, on-site inspection, water and sewer, and taxi industries, to name just a few. A number of government organisations are also looking to use the app to improve their workplace safety,” said Johnson. “These are exciting times in safety and risk management. We are constantly updating the Lone Worker app, based on feedback and practical suggestions from users, and are currently working on an international version of the app as well as a panic alarm function. We are also in the process of integrating the app with our 24/7 operations contact centre and individual business monitoring systems,” concluded Johnson. The Lone Worker app was developed by iota, the commercial arm of South East Water, which was established to promote innovative ideas and proven technologies to the utility sector. Lone Worker Lite is free and available from the iTunes app store. Iota Services Contact info and more items like this at wf.net.au/U435

Fogger with atomised chemical Spray Nozzle Engineering has launched the Lafferty 4-way, portable, air-operated foggers with atomised chemical. Powered solely by compressed air which creates Venturi Action that draws a pre-mixed chemical solution up the chemical tube into the fogger body where it is atomised, the fogger can produce a wet, damp or dry fog (dependent on the model). The fog can be finetuned by adjusting the air pressure and/or by regulating the solution flow with optional metering tips. The range of Lafferty foggers can: sanitise, deodorise, apply insecticides, humidify, lubricate, degrease, spot clean and apply cooling mist. For use in large areas with multiple fogger units and/ or fogging zones, there are also pump fed operational controllers that are used to set operating parameters such as time delay, timed fogging and sequencing options. A needle valve can be used to finetune fog particle size and a stainless steel manifold allows multiple units to be mounted inline. For safety and hygiene purposes, a chemical check valve is also set up to prevent drips after shutdown.

chest recoil. The device facilitates consistent blood flow from the moment it is turned on. The device can be applied quickly and provide continuous compressions during patient transport irrespective of the terrain. The back plate slides under the patient’s shoulders and the main body of the unit is clipped onto the back plate and activated. The piston is lowered to the patient’s chest wall and this is set as the starting point of compression. The piston compresses the chest the recommended five centimetres and then returns to the start position. The suction cup on the end of the piston arm acts to pull the chest wall up ensuring full recoil, which in turn facilitates airflow into the lungs. Designed to operate effectively in even the harshest environments, the device has the additional safety feature that if the device senses a chest compression greater than 5 cm, it will alert the operator with an alarm and stop compressions to avoid injuring the patient. Keep up to date with fire safety standards and legislation 2012 Routine Service of Fire Protection Systems and Equipment. AS1851-2012 provides prescribed routine servicing activities for fire protection systems and equipment. The recent changes provide improvements and greater clarity around what is expected from building managers and their service providers. One of the most significant changes is the reduction in equipment inspections from weekly to monthly and a new focus on data requirements. The revised standard also introduces the requirement for ‘baseline data’ to be provided which provides a benchmark performance level for any fire protection systems and equipment installed. Requirements relating to passive fire protection have also been substantially revised.

PPE

DO YOU NEED TO BE SEEN? HIGH-VIS TAPE SELECTION FOR SAFETY HELMETS The importance of protecting employees and providing a safe work environment has seen an increase in the use of reflective and high-visibility tapes. Whether it is on work clothing or personal protective equipment (PPE), it is a common requirement and practice to use high-vis tape to improve the visibility of workers, particularly if they are working in low-light areas at night.

T

he use of high-visibility tape on industrial safety helmets is widespread and helps to further improve personal safety; however, it is important to note that the correct tape and configuration must be selected. The working environment, hazards and lighting conditions all play a major role in the selection process of high-visibility tape for safety helmets. For example, employees who wear an industrial safety helmet in varying light conditions may require an adhered tape that is highly visible during the day and capable of reflecting artificial light, such as vehicle headlights, in dull or night conditions. (Reference document AS/NZS1801:1997 clause 3.2.5.) There are a number of different safety helmet tapes available and they are generally cut and shaped into various kit designs. The recommended width of the tape should be at least 25 mm with an overall area sufficient to enhance personal protection. They must be adhered to the safety helmet in an integral manner and must not impact on the performance of the headwear. The main types of adhesive tape available are: • Retro reflective (Night) - These tapes are commonly used when working in dull or night conditions and reflect light.

20

• Retro reflective/fluorescent (Day/Night) - These are combination performance tapes that provide high visual capabilities during the day and reflect light during the night. It is common to see the above tapes used on safety helmets in industries such as mining, transport, construction, forestry and oil and gas. Having the tapes applied by the safety helmet manufacturer will ensure that it is compatible, professionally adhered and meet any required regulatory performance requirements. Different types of tape are available in shapes that have been designed to: fit the contour of safety helmet shell, avoid any helmet accessories that may be fitted and provide clear visibility in day/night conditions. Safety helmets fitted with reflective tape have the advantage of improved visibility, making it easier to see where people are working, particularly in low light areas at night. The tapes used by Scott Safety have been extensively tested to ensure that the adhesive is fully compatible with the ABS and Polycarbonate Protector brand safety helmets. The RT 1 Reflective silver retroreflective can be used for increased wearer visibility in areas where moving vehicles and headlights are present. The RT 2 Reflective prismatic silver tape provides visibility regardless of

the angle. RT 4 Reflective in white, yellow or red is designed for extreme environments such as forestry and the 29/30/31 Reflective configuration is designed for visibility regardless of the angle and is suitable for use in mining environments. The different shapes and patterns of the tapes have been designed to fit the helmets and enhance the daytime and night-time visibility of the user. Most patterns have been designed to also fit around safety helmet accessories such as lamp brackets and company logos. The Scott Safety reflective tapes are certified to AS/NZS 1906.1. It is also important to regularly inspect the tape to ensure: adhesion is maintained, no damage has occurred and the tape performs as it should. This inspection process also assists with the maintenance of the safety helmet itself. This simple inspection should be carried out prior to every use. If any degradation to tape or safety helmet is evident, it should be withdrawn from service and replaced. In conjunction with reflective clothing, safety helmets complete with day/night tape are designed to maximise worker safety. Scott Safety Contact info and more items like this at wf.net.au/U622

CASE STUDY

Added flash for PCB testing Electrical safety testing specialist Clare has developed a system using its HAL104 instrument connected to a test enclosure, which enables flash testing of PCBs during the initial production stages. The enclosure has a conductive foam base with modular sections to accommodate different sizes of PCBs. It can have a spring-mounted probe system or a further section of conductive foam can be added to allow it to work with different types of PCBs. The move follows the increasing US-led trend that all base PCBs must now be flash tested during the manufacturing process to ensure that they have no defects and are compliant with safety standards. This comes from growing demand among global component assemblers that all electronic components should be able to pass a flash test before final build. Two types of PCB can be tested: those with one surface covered in metal and ‘standard’ units with an insulated side. Regardless, the track side of the PCB is placed face down on the conductive foam, enabling all metallic parts to be in contact with the foam and providing a ‘base bed’ for the remainder of the insulating surface of the board. Once in position, a flash test is then performed across the board, testing for integrity. Richard Williams, senior applications engineer at Clare, said the HAL-based solution will help to meet the growing requirement for flash tested PCBs. “Electronics manufacturers want to ensure that component parts are capable of withstanding the voltages that final assembled products will operate to. “Some manufacturers in the UK and China have already adopted this approach for their PCBs, while others are expected to follow to suit.” The HAL104 is part of a range of digital instruments which can perform standard electrical safety tests and allows full traceability of test results and records via internal data memory storage.

It combines the performance of a multifunction production line safety tester with load and power factor measurement for product energy consumption and ratings assessments. The all-in-one tester has been designed for accurate electrical tests required by modern electronic manufacturing environments. As well as incorporating key functional checks, the instrument meets the end-of-line electrical safety compliance tests required by the majority of safety standards. The tester has applications in the electronics manufacturing sector - particularly in those production situations where high-resolution performance measurements are important, such as LED products in low-energy lighting applications and PV solar panels. As well as load and power functional tests, the tester incorporates AC/DC Hipot, insulation, ground bond testing to 40 A, load testing up to 20 A (5 kVA) with leakage measurements from 100 µA to 20 mA, with 10 µA resolution. Arcing protective glove Arcing fault hazards resulting from short circuits in electrical installations can create a considerable safety risk. Therefore, the use of tested, arcing fault-proof protective clothing is extremely important. Arc protective gloves are an essential contribution to working safety if they: fit correctly and are not hindering work; are tested according to EN 388 (mechanical risk) and EN 407 (thermal risk); are wearable even at extremely high or low temperatures; and are tested for arc resistance and their protective effect (in accordance with IEC 61482-1-2).The so-called box test in accordance with IEC 61482-1-2 provides a method which is applicable also for protective gloves. The arc protective glove by DEHN + SÖHNE has a Class 2 protection (7 kA/500 ms). Class 2 represents a high degree of protection against thermal arc hazard. The high wearing comfort of the protective glove is claimed to increase the wearing acceptance and thus the risk of damage to the hands. Effective operator protection with regard to arcing fault hazards should be a combination of personal safety equipment, such as protective gloves and clothing, with additional arc fault protection equipment. Scan for safety information The CodeSafe digital platform is designed to reduce the risk of injury by providing key information to employees through visual support to existing procedures using QR code technology. This approach is said to reduce the risk of misinterpretation of the written word and overcomes language and literacy barriers by allowing the employee to scan a CodeSafe QR code to view safety, environment and quality communication messages in an interactive way. The product was originally developed with the support of both Melbourne Water and the Water Resource Alliance partners for applications in the water industry. Alliance was awarded the Australian Water Association ‘Water Industry Safety Excellence’ award for 2013. RMIT University announced in June that it is partnering with CodeSafe in a bid for research funding. The research will evaluate the effectiveness and impact of the CodeSafe system in promoting WHS in the construction industry. The CodeSafe system combines a systematic process for: eliciting the tacit knowledge of construction workers relating to the WHS aspects of the work tasks they perform; engaging construction workers in scripting, acting and recording films to visually represent this tacit WHS knowledge; and using Quick Response (QR) code technology to make this knowledge quickly and easily available to other workers who need to access it. The CodeSafe system enables important WHS information - such as documents, pictures, text and even video - for a specific piece of equipment, location or procedure to be delivered direct to a smartphone instantly and on demand.

Radio remote controls on cranes improve safety at brewery Radio remote controls fitted to Konecranes overhead and monorail cranes at Tasmanian brewer J Boag & Son are helping the operators lift and position their loads precisely, while also ensuring the safety of the operators. The historic brewer, based in Launceston, is famous for brands that include James Boag’s Premium Lager, Boag’s Draught and James Boag’s Pure. It is now using a Konecranes single-girder CXTS overhead crane with a wire rope hoist in the hop room. The one-tonne crane, with a 4.34 m span, is used for manoeuvring bags containing brewing additives into position over the dissolving tanks. The Konecranes radiocontrolled XN electric chain hoist on an XNM monorail is used for lifting a bowl out of a separator, as part of the beer-making process. “The radio remotes mean safety for the operators, who can stand well away from the loads being lifted and shifted. The remotes also give freedom of movement, ensuring the operators can choose a position where they have the best view of the cranes and loads,” explained John Hansson, Branch Manager Tasmania for Konecranes, who was on the team that installed the cranes and their controls. J Boag’s Services & Utilities Manager Andrew Mitchell said the Konecranes overhead crane and monorail with remote controls were working well for the brewery. CXT and CXTS (single-girder) cranes with individual hoist capacities up to 80 tonnes - and complementary CXT wire rope hoists - are designed to be industry benchmarks of safety and ergonomics, with easy and effective load handling and optimum dimensions for space-saving solutions. PROTECT OUTDOOR WORKERS

FROM DEADLY RISKS Extract from TecTorque Spring 2013, written by Alan Johnson

Without protection, outdoor workers in Australia are at serious risk of being bitten by harmful animals with the potential of serious injury or worse. In November last year, an autopsy found a worker died almost instantly from a Taipan bite while working in thick bushland near Yeppoon in central Queensland.

hile being fully aware of the dangers, most Australians tend to laugh it off when they hear visitors to our shores saying they are scared of our native wildlife such as our reptiles and spiders. But they are out there and outdoor workers, in particular, should take precautions. We share our continent with about 140 species of land snakes, some equipped with venom more toxic than any other snakes in the world. Our most common deadly snakes (Eastern, Western and King Brown, Tiger, Death Adder and Taipan) all produce venom of extreme potency, enough to kill an adult from a single strike. Often without the victims knowing they’ve been bitten. According to the experts at National Geographic, snake bites are actually quite rare in Australia and, since the development of antivenom, fatalities have been low - between four to six deaths a year. This is in contrast to India, for example, where bites often reach one million a year, with over 50,000 deaths. Snake experts say bites in Australia are often caused by the person being bitten when they are trying to kill or catch a snake or just showing off. Russell Silver, Sales Director with HexArmor, a leading manufacturer of cut, puncture and impact safety products, says people should be especially careful in known snake areas. “People should wear appropriate clothing with some kind of protection, gaiters for example, around their legs, and be very careful picking up and looking underneath objects as that is where snakes tend to stay, especially during the heat of the day.

32

“Most snakes come out at night to hunt for food, but during the day they can be found under items like corrugated iron sheets, large rocks or piles of timber. As well, people should never put their hand in a hole. “It is especially important to stay away from snakes that are coiled or whose heads are raised. These behaviours may indicate they are primed to strike,” Silver said. When it comes to types of snakes, Australia’s brown snakes are the most deadly snakes in the world. Fast-moving, aggressive and known for their bad temper, eastern brown snakes (found throughout the eastern half of mainland Australia), together with other browns, are responsible for more deaths every year in Australia than any other group of snakes. If disturbed, the eastern brown raises its body off the ground, winding into an ‘S’ shape, mouth gaping open and ready to strike. Its venom causes progressive paralysis and stops the blood from clotting, which may take many doses of antivenom to reverse. Victims may collapse within a few minutes. NSW Health Service says people who have been bitten by any type of snake should never interfere with the bite by cutting or trying to suck out the venom, or clean the venom from the skin. A firm bandage should be applied over clothing, starting at the bite site, then going down to fingers or toes and back up to the hip or shoulder, as tight as would be applied for a sprained ankle. The location of the bite should be marked on the bandage. The limb should also be immobilised with a splint, either by splinting the legs together or the arm to the trunk of the body,

PPE FOR OUTDOOR WORKERS

The deadliest creature While many visitors to our shores are more worried about our venomous eight-legged friends, Australia’s spider reputation is bigger than its bite: records show no deaths from spider bites here since 1981. Spiders are the most widely distributed venomous creatures in Australia, with an estimated 10,000 species inhabiting a variety of ecosystems. But even though spiders live around us, from our urban centres to the bush, bites are infrequent. In fact, spiders are less life threatening than snakes or sharks, or even bees. What many visitors and Australians would not know is that mosquitoes are one of the most deadliest creatures in the world, with more deaths associated with mosquitoes than any other animal on the planet. Mosquito-borne diseases in Australia include malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, Ross River virus, Barmah Forest virus and some rare forms of encephalitis. Figures show mosquitoes infect over 700 million people every year.

and the patient should be kept still and transported carefully. After first aid has been applied, 000 should be contacted. Most hospital emergency departments have access to antivenom for black, brown and tiger snake bites.

Protection from bites HexArmor’s representative says that while the company’s products are bite resistant, “they are not bite proof”, and assessing potential danger should be the first step. If the wearer has the ability to do a safe test, it is always recommended to do so. Some workers have been using specific models of the HexArmor needlestick-resistant products for handling animals including reptiles, rats, dogs, feral cats, possums, ferrets, etc as they have shown resistance to bites. Cut, puncture and abrasion resistant, the HexArmor 9951 gaiters are designed to protect the wearer from animals that bite, as well as high-risk hazards on the job site. In addition to high puncture resistance, the US-made gaiters provide ISEA (International Safety Equipment Association) Level 5 cut resistance. Made with SuperFabric brand material, the gaiters are highly cut, puncture and abrasion resistant with front-to-back leg coverage. They also feature a reflective strip for visibility in low light situations. HexArmor also produces the Hercules needle-resistant NSR 3041 gloves for handling animals with sharp teeth/incisors and the Hercules 400R6E heavy-duty gloves for primates and large bird handling.

Offering six to 15 hours of protection from mosquitoes, Bushman insect repellents are suitable for outdoor professionals, sporting enthusiasts and overseas travellers. According to Sue Dwyer from Bushman Repellents, the Bushman range is proven to be 100% effective hours longer than any other personal insect repellent. “The repellent is active against other blood-seeking insects such as flies, ticks, leeches, horseflies, sandflies and midges. It is also water, sweat and rub resistant but still allows the skin to breathe.” Bushman products were developed in 1990 by Tom Bethurem - an industrial chemist living in Australia’s Tropical North, with over 35 years’ experience developing personal insect repellents. An alternative to a gel or liquid mosquito repellent which is traditionally sprayed or spread on people’s skin to protect them from mosquitoes, Para’Kito is a range of refillable wristbands and clips offering natural mosquito protection. Brent Rundle, representing Para’Kito, says the refillable wristbands and clips are based on a patented technology of impregnation of essential oils into polymers. “The wristbands can be worn on the wrist or ankle, day and night, to protect against mosquitoes. The long-lasting Para’Kito pellets are effective for 15 days and waterproof, meaning that swimming, heavy rain or any contact with water does not affect the product’s efficacy,” Rundle said. Rundle explained that the Para’Kito pellet diffuses only essential oils and does not come in contact with the skin; as such it is suitable for pregnant women and young children and recommended for individuals susceptible to skin allergies and irritations. For many in Australia, day-to-day protection at work or elsewhere from creatures and critters is a necessary way of life. By using products such as HexArmor, Bushman and Para’Kito from the Blackwoods range, workplaces can help to ensure that their workers have protection from these risks. Protecting workers from heat stress Heat stress occurs when the body cannot sufficiently cool itself. The body naturally reacts to heat by increasing blood flow to the skin’s surface and sweating. Sweat evaporation promotes cooling and an increase in blood flow means heat is carried to the surface of the body and released. Pryme Australia Managing Director Terry Houlihan said workers operating in hot and humid conditions could be at risk of heat stress and needed to be well aware of the associated symptoms. “Workers operating in hot and humid conditions without appropriate clothing can be susceptible to heat stress because sweat evaporation is restricted, impairing the body’s cooling mechanism and contributing to a rise in the body’s core temperature and heart rate. “Symptoms can range from weakness, dizziness and fainting to heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.” Houlihan said people working in places with poor ventilation and higher temperatures needed to be educated on how to recognise

36

heat stress symptoms and minimise the risks associated with such symptoms. “Occupations that are more at risk include miners, factory workers, firefighters, farmers and construction workers,” he said. “Workers operating in these industries need to wear clothing made from materials that allow the body to breathe. Chill-Its Evaporative Cooling Vest features activated polymer-embedded fabric on the inside and a water-repellent liner. The vest remains hydrated for up to four hours and provides effective cooling relief for workers. Chill-Its Evaporative Cooling Towel is also another option as it features advanced PVA material that activates in plain water to remain significantly cooler than ambient air temperature and is super-absorbent. “Implementing a comprehensive heat stress action plan that includes appropriate breaks, a healthy diet, regular fluid consumption and the use of protective clothing is vital in ensuring employees remain comfortable and productive at work. “It could be something as simple as scheduling a more strenuous job to a cooler part of the day or assigning more workers to one job to reduce the physical demand on each worker. Heat stress is a serious issue that can be life threatening so employers need to do their very best to ensure workers are protected. ” Pryme Australia Pty Ltd Contact info and more items like this at wf.net.au/U668

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

GLOVE SHOWS ITS TRUE COLOURS In the future, employees exposed to risks will only have to put on a glove in order to receive a toxic substance warning. A textile has been developed that identifies poisonous substances and turns blue in the presence of hazardous substances.

E

mployees in chemical production, the semiconductor industry or in laboratories are frequently exposed to harmful substances. The problem: many of these aggressive substances are imperceptible to human senses, which makes handling them so risky. That’s why there is a broad range of solutions that employers can use to protect their staff from hazardous substances - from highly sensitive measuring equipment to heat imaging cameras. Soon, this spectrum will be enhanced by one more clever solution that is easy to handle and dispenses with a power supply. Researchers at the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Modular Solid State Technologies EMFT in Regensburg have engineered a glove that recognises if toxic substances are present in the surrounding air. The protective glove is equipped with custom-made sensor materials and indicates the presence of toxic substances by changing colours. In this regard, the scientists adapted the materials to the corresponding analytes and, thus, the application. The colour change - from colourless (no toxic substance) to blue (toxic substance detected), for example - warns the employee immediately. “By synthesising the adapted colour sensor materials, we can detect gases like carbon monoxide, for example, or hydrogen sulfide. Still, this protective gear represents only one potential area of application. Sensor materials could also be deployed for the quick detection of leaks in gas lines,” explains Dr Sabine Trupp, head of the Fraunhofer EMFT Sensor Materials group.

Tailor-made indicator dyes

The warning signal is triggered by an indicator dye integrated into the glove that reacts to the presence of analytes; in this case, the toxic substances. The experts at EMFT used a variety of techniques in order to furnish textiles with sensor-activated dyes. The sensoractivated dyes are applied to the clothing with the customary dye and print process; for example, by affixing them in an immersion bath. Previously, the researchers used targeted chemical modification to adapt the colour molecules to the fibre properties of the respective textile. Alternatively, the textiles can also be coated with sensor

particles that are furnished with sensor dyes. For this purpose, the scientists integrated the dye molecules either into commercial pigments or they built them up on an entirely synthetic basis. The pigments are then manufactured according to the customary textile finishing process; for instance, the sensor particles are also suitable for silkscreening. “Which version we opt for depends on the requirements of the planned application,” says Trupp. The challenge lies foremost in the tailored development of sensor dyes. “The dye molecule must detect a specific analyte in a targeted manner - only then will a chemical reaction occur. Moreover, the dye must adhere securely; it cannot disappear due to washing. We aim for the customer’s preferences in the colour selection as well. All of these aspects must be kept in mind when developing the molecule and pigment properties,” explains Trupp. The expert already has new ideas about how the solution could be developed further. For example, a miniaturised sensor module, integrated into textiles, could record toxic substances, store the measurement data and even transmit them to a main unit. This way, you could document how frequently an individual within a hazardous environment was exposed to poisonous concentrations over a longer period of time. The researchers also envision other potential applications in the foodstuffs industry: in the future, colour indicator systems integrated into foils or bottle closures are intended to make the quality status of the packaged foods visible. (Because the sell-by date does not represent a guarantee of any kind.) Foodstuffs may often spoil prematurely - unnoticed by the consumer - due to a packaging error, or in the warehousing, or due to disruptions in the refrigeration chain. Oil-based and fat-containing products are specifically prone to this, as are meats, fish and ready meals. The researcher and her team exhibited the occupational safety article of clothing at Fraunhofer’s exhibition booth at the Sensor + Test trade show in Nuremberg, Germany, in May. Drink driving incidents prevented using interlocks The figures were compiled using data from the devices used by convicted drink drivers who were subject to the interlock program and had been unable to start their vehicles because they were under the influence of alcohol. The good news is that over 37,000 drink driving situations were avoided. The bad news is that unless they are fitted, interlocks cannot help to curb the problem of the ‘first offender’. According to US research involving a n o n y m o u s co n v i c t e d drink drive offenders, first offenders are rarely what the name implies. Instead, they are usually multiple offenders who have only just been caught. As an approved supplier of interlocks in Australia and New Zealand, Draeger Safety Pacific is currently running a new safety campaign to highlight the thought-provoking “Drink or Drive - make a clear choice” message. Featuring a bottle opener, a car key and an interlock, the message is designed to curb the drink drive problem by helping drivers to realise that they do have a choice when it comes to drinking alcohol and getting behind the wheel of a car. While it is often installed on private vehicles as the result of a court order following a serious drink driving offence, the Dräger Interlock XT can be fitted to company vehicles as part of an employer’s health and safety at work policy. Eliminating the risks associated with drink driving, it helps organisations ensure that

they are doing everything they reasonably can to prevent an accident or incident resulting from the actions of an employee. Fitted to the car’s ignition, the device measures the driver’s breath alcohol level. The driver simply blows into the device as directed by the straightforward user menu. The car will not start until an alcohol level that is within the preset limit is received. Any attempt to tamper with the device is recorded automatically and the driver must repeat the test at random intervals throughout the journey to ensure that he or she is still sober. If they fail to carry out the requested breath test sample or the test is positive for breath alcohol, an alarm will sound or the vehicle’s hazard lights and horn will be activated until the vehicle is turned off or the driver carries out a successful re-test. Internal data storage records events such as dates, times, submission of or refusal to submit a breath sample, the measured alcohol concentration, the number of engine starts and stops, and any electrical bypassing or other attempts to tamper with the device. For those drivers who have been convicted of drink driving, this data can be presented to the driver vehicle licensing authority or other supervisory body to confirm a driver’s compliance. PFA-lined ball valves Richter PFA-lined ball valves KN/F and KK/F have been type-approved by TUEV and are suitable for use on road tankers, tank wagons and transport containers. They comply with the German Clean Air Act (TA Luft). In addition to compliance to European regulations, the ball valves, BVA and KA-N, have been certified by the AAR (Association of American Railroad) in the USA (AAR Manual Section C, Part III, M-1002). PFA/PTFE-lined butterfly valves are used on acid tank ships. Further examples are PFA-lined diaphragm valves as filling and drain valves on special bromine containers and PFA-lined magnetic drive pumps on road tankers for faster unloading, eg, H2SO4. The integral PFA fluoroplastic lining has many advantages in that it is much more resistant to corrosion than the alternative materials. It is an anti-adhesive vacuum resistant lining which is easy for CIP (clean in place) and can be also used for high-purity and for solids-laden fluids with large temperature ranges from up to -60 up to 200°C. The seal-less, magnetic drive centrifugal pumps are fitted with integral PFA lining and are equipped with a hydraulically optimised closed impeller. The pumps are also hermetically tight with no rotary shaft seal thus requiring minimal maintenance. IDEX Fluid & Metering Contact info and more items like this at wf.net.au/S565

Portable actuator Acrodyne has released the Acro-Torq Portable Actuator range. The portable actuator can operate a host of valves, especially where infrequent valve operation will not justify installation of a permanent actuator or the provision of power source is impractical or uneconomical. It addresses the current OHS issues experienced in the field by minimising fatigue and the possibility of injury. It requires no additional power source other than its self-contained rechargeable batteries as well as its built-in safety features when applied correctly by Acrodyne engineers. Features include speed control and it is easily reversible for opening and closing of valves. The actuator can be adapted to almost any valve or gearbox combination by means of dedicated couplings. Torque control can be simply addressed by the inclusion of an Acro-Gears Aunspach torque limiter. In addition, the company can also provide a range of gearboxes and other mountings and accessories to assist in the safe operation of this actuator. There are three models available ranging from battery to the higher torque capacity four-stroke petrol versions. Acrodyne Pty Ltd Contact info and more items like this at wf.net.au/R695

SELECTING THE RIGHT

SAFETY FOOTWEAR FOR THE JOB

With workplace safety boots today combining comfort, style and innovations that sound more like chemical compounds, making the right choice of protective footwear can be difficult.

O

liver Footwear’s Managing Director, Phil Hughes, provides some basic guidance on selecting the correct safety footwear to protect your feet against common risks on a job site. He says firstly know the specific needs of your workplace environment. Is there a potential risk arising from falling objects, sharp surfaces or metals, or are chemicals or electrical hazards another potential risk? For example, footwear required by an electrician will be different to the one required by a builder, welder or miner. An electrician would need to look for features such as an electrical resistant (EH) sole where a welder would need a rubber outsole that has heat resistance up to 300°C. It is also imperative that your safety boots meet Australian and international safety standards. To achieve this, features like the toecap, thread, leather, laces, hooks, eyelets and even the lining of the boot need to pass a range of tests conducted by an independent registered laboratory. Any safety boot that has been checked and approved by AS/NZS 2210.3:2009 standards will have a certification logo on or inside the boot. “Try the boots on,” says Hughes. “Can you wiggle your toes? Is there space within the shape of the toecap so that your toes are not in contact with the cap itself?” A roomy, comfortable toecap is important so that you are relieved of pressure on your toes especially if you’re wearing your safety boots for an extended period of time. For protection against falling objects, a metatarsal guard that shields the front of the foot is important. Is there risk from sharp objects or glass? Then a safety boot with mid-sole penetration protection is your best choice. Another consideration is the moisture conditions at your work site. Long hours of exposure to wet feet can result in infections and blisters. Even short-term exposure to dampness can ruin your day on the job. So be sure to select a safety boot that is weatherproof or water resistant. Premium, full-grain leather uppers provide the first defence against moisture. For additional water proofing, a membrane lining can be include in the boot.

Your choice of boots will also need to be resistant to other liquids like mineral oils and acids and even chemicals. Check the boot manufacturer’s recommendations carefully to see that your boots can resist these materials. Comfort, of course, is of importance as most workers will be spending long hours of the day wearing safety footwear. A good safety boot should immediately feel comfortable without a suggestion that it is going to take some wearing in. When trying on a new safety boot, wear your everyday socks as this will help you check the comfort of your foot inside the boot. Does the sole have defined comfort features? Is it flexible? Does it have a wide base for a grip on the surface? Take it for a walk in the store before you buy - on a firm surface like a concrete floor, not carpet. It will quickly show you just how comfortable it is likely to be. A GOOD SAFETY BOOT SHOULD IMMEDIATELY FEEL COMFORTABLE WITHOUT A SUGGESTION THAT IT IS GOING TO TAKE SOME WEARING IN.

Shock-absorbent removable insoles provide additional underfoot cushioning. They can be removed to be cleaned, replaced as needed or substituted with a custom prescription insert. “Oliver continues to work closely with our customers to ensure we understand their workplace needs and deliver effective footwear solutions,” says Hughes. “It is this commitment to innovation and world’s best practice that is the foundation of the Oliver promise of comfort, performance and durability.” Oliver Footwear commenced producing tough and durable boots for miners and farmers in 1887 and today operates a modern manufacturing plant in Ballarat, Australia, supported by a dedicated team of employees. How safe is your workplace? In Australia, work-related injuries and illnesses have been known to cost our economy more than $60 billion dollars in a single year*, representing 4.8% of GDP. As a result of these alarming figures, Australian riskmanagement training provider SAI Global has designed an online scenario-based safety training course that meets critical criteria for OHS hazard audits, Online Auditing OHS Management Systems. “Inadequate risk plans can increase the rate of workplace injuries and are mostly the result of a lack of resources and expertise,” said OHS trainer Ray Bedson, who trains hundreds of employees every year through SAI Global. “Employers can’t ignore the risks to their employees - a shoulder injury can cost an organisation $400,000 in accident compensation and prosecution costs, and a back injury over $1 million,” says Bedson.

through a work area, discuss with those who might be affected and repeat the exercise every week until a thorough scope of the workplace has been made. Record: “Note all the identified hazards on a Workplace Inspection Checklist - any employee can perform this in their own area. Writing it down makes it harder to ignore and it lets your team know you’re considering solutions to any issues,” said Bedson. Prioritise: “Use a Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment & Control (HIRAC) format to score each risk from negligible to extreme. Take into consideration the likelihood of an incident occurring and the level of consequence that this could have. This will allow you to prioritise your actions,” said Bedson. “HIRAC or Risk Assessment forms are available from your industry association or statutory WorkSafe or WorkCover authority and are best filled out by HR, safety or OHS coordinators, with the assistance of safety representatives who have a bit of knowledge.” Control and consult: “It is best to implement a control that will eliminate the risk altogether, or minimise it through an engineering solution such as noise reduction. Note them down on the HIRAC form,” said Bedson. “Consult again with employees to ensure everyone agrees. Getting them involved will help ensure they implement the controls when the time comes.” Monitor and review: “To determine if your processes and controls are effective and reducing incidents, review them at least monthly,” said Bedson. “Compare the number of incidents and their level of significance. If there has been no improvement, it’s time to rethink your plan.”

© iStockphoto.com/Charles Schug

Seven steps to developing an effective plan for identifying and reducing workplace risks: Commit: “A risk plan can’t be carried out once and put aside. It’s an ongoing commitment. All employees, not just OHS and risk managers, must be on board over the long term. In an organisation of 100 employees, a risk or OHS manager may need to commit 80 hours per month, while remaining employees may need to commit another 120 hours per month collectively,” said Bedson. Communicate: “At least monthly, ask employees to recall any previous injuries and incidents - including near misses - and discuss why these happened. Encourage them to be vocal about potential hazards and the things that make them nervous, particularly where operational changes have taken place. Some employees don’t see the risks in the same way you might, so another tactic is to follow and observe an employee’s work for a few hours and have discussions around safety - you will soon get a clear snapshot for potential hazards.” Bedson says extremely busy managers can try to spot all hazards in a 30-minute walk

54

Train new employees: “Awareness is the first step in controlling hazards; employees who are new to the workplace, inexperienced or untrained are particularly at risk. Investing in their training and development can do more than just protect your business financially and legally - it can save their life.” Bedson admits that there is no real ‘secret’ to optimum workplace safety. In fact, the most effective OHS risk management systems are practical, logical and simple to implement and understand. “Don’t develop overly detailed plans with confusing forms - these discourage use and, before you know it, workplace hazards are ignored.” “In my 30 years’ experience in the industry, best practice OHS-risk management plans identify existing known hazards, measure and rank them, and outline simple and practical controls. They are developed by managers who understand their workplace surroundings and received comprehensive training on implementing OHS management systems. Every plan should simplify company processes and bring them into real-life situations.” SAI Global’s self-paced course can be accessed online, making it suitable for location-based industries. It focuses not only on the core auditing skills, but also on communication and reporting, which can help lead auditors maximise success. *Source: Key Work Health and Safety Statistics, Australia, 2012http://www.safeworkaustralia.gov.au/sites/SWA/about/ Publications/Documents/677/Key_Work_Health_and_Safety_ Statistics_Australia_2012.pdf SAI Global Limited Contact info and more items like this at wf.net.au/U709

Cable ladder blocks Evo-Crete cable ladder blocks are lightweight, stable and durable equipment foundations. The cable ladder blocks are claimed to be easy to drill into and lifting and slinging is not required, reducing occupational health and safety manual handling risks and project time frames. The blocks are a safe one- or two-person lift, dependent on the block size and design required for the project. Peripheral or secondary risks such as working with machinery, cables, shackles and straps under tension are eliminated and the potential for injuries such as jammed fingers, cuts, bruises and abrasions are greatly reduced. Eye tracking technology for mining machines

Australian-based Seeing Machines has signed a strategic agreement with Caterpillar Global Mining LLC, a leading manufacturer of mining equipment, for DSS in-cab Fatigue Monitoring Systems for use in mining machines. The agreement covers a multiple-phase approach that commences with a supply and support agreement of the fatigue monitoring systems through the global Cat Dealer network and progresses to further phases that include joint product development and technology licensing agreements. “The safety of our mining customers’ employees is a paramount issue to us,” said David Edwards, Safety Solutions Manager for Caterpillar Global Mining. “Seeing Machines delivers both safety and productivity benefits to the mining industry. Going forward we see even closer integration between what in-cab fatigue monitoring can deliver in both intervention alerts and analytics to improve safety and performance.” Under the agreement, Seeing Machines and Caterpillar envision greater integration of the fatigue monitoring systems with Cat MineStar System so that data on fatigue and distraction can be integrated into the overall management functions of the mine and business. Seeing Machines, headquartered © iStockphoto.com/Anatoly Tiplyashin in Canberra, has developed fatigue monitoring systems using patented eye and head tracking technology to detect operator fatigue and distraction and to alert the mine controller and the machine operator. The product development for use in the mining industry was a result of research conducted by the company which identified a sequence of events before someone had a microsleep, including changes in eyelid behaviour, and the system is designed to monitor this behaviour, which includes the frequency of blinking. “The alliance with Seeing Machines is a natural progression of Caterpillar Global Mining’s work to mitigate fatigue issues in mining activities,” said Al Frese, general manager of solutions, technology and marketing for Caterpillar Global Mining. “For the past 10 years, Caterpillar Global Mining has been raising awareness and industry understanding of the implications of 24/7 shift work on equipment operator performance, distraction and fatigue through industry training programs, such as Managing a Mining Lifestyle, and through partnerships with industry organisations and research universities.” The alliance agreement also supports collaboration in future product development. “We look forward to growing the use of our fatigue monitoring systems and to working jointly with Caterpillar Global Mining to integrate our technology into Cat MineStar System mine management functions and to develop expanded capabilities for this technology,” said Terry Winters, chairman of Seeing Machines. Seeing Machines’ Driver Safety System (DSS), a commercial system for mining trucks, currently is working on more than 20 mine sites and 1500 vehicles. The system continuously measures operator eye and eyelid behaviour to determine the onset of fatigue and microsleeps and delivers real-time detection and alerts, yet the operator is not required to wear any special equipment. Additionally, automatic initialisation and calibration of the dash-mounted camera requires no input from the operator. As a result, the system is transparent to the operator.

from the editor

The Australian Mental Health Report Card, which was released in November 2012 by the National Mental Health Commission, estimated 3.2 million Australians each year live with mental health issues. Mental illness has been estimated to cost the Australian economy over $20 billion a year; however, research from SANE Australia has highlighted that the majority of people feel unsupported when mentally unwell, and less than half of managers (43%) in the workplace have an understanding of mental illness. NSW Police recently announced that it will be addressing this lack of understanding by providing specialised mental health training to its front-line police officers across NSW. These police officers are interacting with people who suffer from mental illness most days but around 90% of the police have never had access to formal mental health education, according to a NSW Police spokesman. The National Mental Health Commission has also launched the Mentally Healthy Workplace Alliance to help create Australian workplaces that are mentally healthy (full details on page 58). On another note, The Safety Show Sydney is being held from 3-5 September at the Sydney Showground and I’m looking forward to some of the presentations. Michael Tooma, Partner at Norton Rose Fulbright, will present a workshop on bullying and says he will provide practical guidance on the legal obligations and strategies for preventing bullying in the workplace. I look forward to seeing you at the show! Carolyn Jackson - Editor ss@westwick-farrow.com.au To get help, please call: Lifeline Australia 13 11 14

mental health Alliance to help create mentally healthy workplaces The National Mental Health Commission has launched (1 July 2013) a landmark Alliance to help create Australian workplaces that are mentally healthy. The Mentally Healthy Workplace Alliance is a collaborative partnership between business, the mental health sector and government. The Alliance is providing the business sector with practical guidance about mental health designed to drive sustainable changes in business culture and practices. It is also developing an evidence-based business case for promoting mentally healthy workplaces. Founding members of the Alliance include the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Australian Psychological Society, beyondblue, the Black Dog Institute, the Business Council of Australia, Comcare, the Council of Small Business Organisations of Australia, the Mental Health Council of Australia, Safe Work Australia, SANE Australia and the University of New South Wales. Prof Allan Fels, Chair of the National Mental Health Commission, says the Alliance wants all Australian workplaces to be taking active steps to create mentally healthy workplaces, and fully realise the benefits to individuals, businesses and the community. “Mental illness costs the Australian economy over $20 billion a year, while recent research from SANE Australia highlights that the majority of people feel unsupported when mentally unwell, and less than half of managers (43%) have an understanding of mental illness.

“With almost half of Australians likely to experience a mental illness in their lifetime, the importance of having mentally healthy workplaces cannot be overstated.

NSW, QLD - Kerrie Robinson Ph: 0400 886 311 krobinson@westwick-farrow.com.au

“Mentally healthy workplaces prevent harm to the mental health of their people, make sure people who experience mental health difficulties are supported, and have positive cultures that are conducive to mental wellbeing.

VIC, SA, WA - Sandra Romanin Ph: 0414 558 464 sromanin@westwick-farrow.com.au

“Businesses that invest in mental health are also more productive, innovative and likely to recruit and retain the best and brightest people. That’s why the work of the Alliance and support from the business community is so important.”

New Zealand - Gemma Burr Ph: 0800 44 2529 gburr@westwick-farrow.com.au

Jennifer Westacott, Chair of the Mental Health Council of Australia, and Chief Executive of the Business Council of Australia says: “Apart from what good health means to individuals, having a healthy workforce is fundamental to the success of any business, large or small. Creating mentally healthy workplaces is an integral part of operating a productive and high-performing business. It should not be seen as something additional for businesses to do.”

“Many businesses have already incorporated good practices regarding mental health and wellbeing into their operations, and a key part of the Alliance’s work is learning from and promoting these approaches so that other organisations can implement strategies relevant to them, and their workplace culture,” Prof Fels continued. The Alliance has invited all Australian businesses to share their experiences in promoting mental wellbeing and this information will be used in the development of practical resources for businesses to be released later in the year. It will also complement the Alliance’s two other major projects: research by the University of New South Wales into evidence-based actions which contribute to creating mentally healthy workplaces; and a report by PwC on the return on investment for creating mentally healthy workplaces. About the Mentally Healthy Workplace Alliance The Mentally Healthy Workplace Alliance was established by the National Mental Health Commission to bring together key stakeholders committed to creating mentally healthy workplaces. Alliance members acknowledge that: • mentally healthy workplaces contribute to the mental health of all Australians • mentally healthy workplaces result in increased productivity and other benefits to businesses • collaboration by stakeholders is key to achieving positive and sustainable change The vision of the Alliance is that Australian workplaces take active steps to promote and create mentally healthy workplaces and fully realise the benefits to individuals, businesses and the community. The Alliance represents a commitment by its members to work collaboratively to provide practical guidance to workplaces to create mentally healthy workplaces, and a sustainable and measurable change in business practices. www.workplacementalhealth.com.au
