A LETTER FROM OUR DIRECTOR Members and Patrons, We have seen incredible growth in the last year and we want to thank all of you. Thanks to your memberships, attendance, participation, and volunteer hours we have had an exciting year of expanded service for our community. In 2017, we were reaching approximately 40,000 people through our programs, and in 2019 that number doubled to approximately 80,000. As we enter our second year of operating the Historic Academy Theatre, we are taking both the successes and lessons from the previous year and moving them forward in to 2020. One thing that is clear to us is that we will continue to strive to reach as many in our community through our programming as possible. This will be done through ticketed events and classes that are wide ranging in medium, style, and form, but also in price point. In 2019, the variety of performances and events were expansive. As an example, on April 15th, 2019, we had three distinct and separate events happening at the same time on our campus. In our galleries, we hosted a First Friday opening; a free event for the public that featured two incredible visual artists with free food and live music. In the Historic Academy Theatre, we hosted one of our resident companies, Opera on the James, performing the opera La Traviata. Meanwhile, in our Warehouse Theatre, the Academy presented the blues/rock band, the North Mississippi All Stars. Each event was different in medium, form, and price point, and it was a night that the dream of our arts center came to fruition (and there was plenty of parking too). So, welcome to year two of a dream realized. Our center of the arts is brimming with activity thanks to you. Stay tuned, bring a friend, and enjoy all that the Academy Center of the Arts will offer in 2020.

With Gratitude,

Geoffrey Kershner Executive Director

Our growth happened in a number of areas, but what we are most proud of is the number of youth reached through our outreach programs, both on and off-site, and the significant growth we saw in the number of people who experienced Academy produced performance events in our venues, including the newly re-opened HistoricEVENTS Academy Theatre. OPERA ON THE JAMES PRESENTS: AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS In time for the holiday season, Opera on the James and Liberty University School of Music bring Gian Carlo Menotti’s magical christmas tale, Amahl And The Night Visitors, to the Historic Academy Theatre. At its core, this heart-touching piece is a retelling of the story of the three kings— Melchior, Balthasar, and Gaspar—who visited the infant Christ while he lay in a manger in Bethlehem. The hero of the opera, Amahl, is a disabled boy who, through his meeting with the three kings, discovers the meaning of generosity and grace. Its christmas message has moved audiences since it was first performed in 1951, in a live performance from Rockefeller Center transmitted coast to coast over the airwaves by NBS.

CIRQUE FLIP FABRIQUE BLIZZARD

VENUE: Historic Academy of Music Theatre

TIME: 7:30 PM

TICKETS: Obstructed: $14.00 Value: $25.00 Standard: $41.00 Premium: $56.00 Box Seats: $82.00

FLIP Fabrique, internationally renowned circus troupe, is a traveling acrobatic circus troupe whose latest creation, Blizzard, takes the audience on a crazy, poetic, and gentle journey through the wonders of winter, following a group of friends and their experience of this winter storm. The troupe uniquely uses props, live music, and physical movement to visually tell engaging and humorous stories. Their incredible acrobatics are paired with hula hoops, juggling, and trampolines for a truly wild and exciting performance. Every aspect of the performance, from the props and costumes to the choreographed movement is carefully designed to capture the essence of winter and allow the audience to lose themselves in a winter wonderland. The New York Times praised the group, saying “... after watching them perform, you may suspect that they hail from a different planet…this troupe offers acts that don’t seem humanly possible.”

ACADEMY PRESENTS:

DECONSTRUCTING ABBEY ROAD

FEB. 29

In Deconstructing Abbey Road, Beatleologist Scott Freiman has created one of his most in-depth “deconstructions.” Scott will take you on a track-bytrack journey explaining the inspiration for the songs and their evolution in the studio.

VENUE:

The Beatles’ Abbey Road is a masterpiece filled with classic Beatles songs, such as Come Together, Something, and Here Comes the Sun. George Martin told the Beatles to think “symphonically,” and they responded by creating the remarkable side two song suite.

7:30 PM

Abbey Road was the last time that the Beatles recorded together at EMI Studios — soon-to-bechristened Abbey Road Studios after the album’s release. Despite the bittersweet atmosphere that surrounded the recording sessions, The Beatles’ outstanding songs and performances together with George Martin’s orchestrations produced an album that continues to be regarded as one of the best albums ever created. Please note that this event is included in the registration fee for the 2020 Create Virginia Conference on Saturday, February 29, 2020. Visit createvirginia.com for more information.

t the Academy, a major emphasis of our annual fundraising is to support our scholarship program and our goals of program accessibility. In our community, 23% live in poverty and another 37% are designated as working poor. This means 50% of our population lives with little to no disposable income. These individuals deserve the increased quality of life that our programs provide. Learning in the arts enables every individual to develop the critical thinking, collaborative, and creative skills necessary to succeed in today’s ever-changing world. A student involved in the arts is four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement and are five times less likely to drop-out of school than their peers. Quality arts education helps close the achievement gap, improves academic skills essential for reading and language development, and advances students’ motivation to learn. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, students in high poverty schools are more than twice as likely to have no access to the arts, and, across the United States, two-thirds of public school teachers believe that the arts are getting crowded out of the school day. Community arts organizations, like the Academy, can work to fill this void. Approximately 33% of our students receive scholarship aid. In 2018, we were able to support over 300 students with partial or full-scholarship funding towards classes, camps, and workshops at the Academy, awarding more than $30,000 in scholarship funds. Our long-term goal is to provide 50% of our students with scholarships, matching the needs of the overall population and providing quality arts-education programs outside of the k-12 classroom. Want to help? Learn more about our scholarship program or donate to the growing scholarship fund by visiting academycenter.org/scholarships/ or calling (434) 846-8499.
