EDITOR’S note A Charlie Brown Christmas album on repeat. Check. A lit balsam and cedar candle. Check. The first sweet nibble of peppermint bark. Check. An obnoxiously sequined ugly Christmas sweater. Check. Grandmother’s hand-painted nativity set. Check. For me, these seasonal joys help me know that something wonderful is coming. Yes, the holiday season can bring challenge and anxiety, but it can also be a time when we allow ourselves to be a little more sentimental, a bit more generous and to remember again the childlike wonder of dancing outdoor lights under twinkling winter skies. Consider this magazine a place to find inspiration and anticipation for the season to come. First, we offer a tour of a local home that celebrates the holidays in a big way and invites the community to take a drive through their winter wonderland. he list of recommendations in favor of hellebores is long. These shadeloving evergreen perennials bloom in winter and are available in an array of colors that deepen over the duration of their blooming period, which can last up to 10 weeks or more. Hellebores are low maintenance, unappealing to deer and other critters that like to nibble on your garden plants, and are susceptible to few pests and diseases. They are sometimes described as “the perfect plant,” so it’s little wonder they are so popular among gardeners.

Choose your favorite When it comes to hellebores you have several options:

n Among the varieties of hellebores, there is the Christmas Rose, a white hellebore that is an early bloomer (sometimes described as a late fall bloomer) because it happens to open in December.

n Then there is the light green, Januaryblooming, Stinking Hellebore. Despite its unfortunate name, the stinking hellebore only gives off its aroma when the foliage is cut or crushed.

n Lastly, there is the Lenten Rose, the most popular of all the hellebores. They begin blooming as early as February, with their blossoms staying attractive until May and sometimes even in June, as the rest of your garden comes to life around them.

The anatomy of a hellebore The colorful portion of hellebores are actually the sepal. On other flowers, the sepals are green and leaflike, protecting the petals from just underneath. On hellebores, the petals are actually very small structures that surround the stamens, so it’s really the sepals that provide the color we so appreciate. And those colors come in shades of white, yellows, greens, pinks and purples that range from pastels to dark-as-night almost black. There is a great deal of variety to the sepals – they can be a single or double layer, with or without picotee edges (that are a different color from the rest of the flower) and/or veining. The centers can be a contrasting darker color or spotted or have an anemone flower. They tend to face downward, making them great to plant on sloped areas, although some newer cultivars face upwards. How to plant Hellebores can be planted in the fall through the spring. They like well drained, slightly acidic soil. Similar to peonies, hellebores don’t like to be planted too deeply or mulched too heavily. They should be given about 15 inches of space around them. Hellebores will spread, albeit slowly. They are the sort of plant that sleeps, creeps and then leaps, meaning, the first year, it focuses on establishing roots; the second year, they get a little bigger; and then the third year, they will start to take off. This slowness factors into their price, as they tend to run from $15 and up for a single plant. As they begin to flower, they will start producing small seedlings around the main plant. These seedlings can be moved, either into pots or into their own spots, where they will slowly grow into larger hellebores, taking about three years (sometimes longer) to begin blooming. Larger hellebores can be split in both spring or fall. However, hellebores dislike being moved, so cooler fall days seem to be a better time

to rearrange them. They prefer shaded areas, but not too densely shaded – some morning sun or dappled afternoon sunlight suits them well. The thick, waxy leaves of hellebores will start turning brown and wilted just

as new growth appears in winter. This is a great time to trim them back to the base of the stalk, which gives more air and light to the flowers. Their leaves can cause mild irritation (they contain some toxins, so do keep them away from children and pets), so you’ll want to wear gloves when cutting back. Once they are finished blooming, you can remove the stems as well. Beyond that, hellebores need little maintenance. They will take a light fertilizing in fall, but it’s not necessary. Hellebores can handle droughts, bouncing back with just a little watering. Even when flattened by ice and snow, hellebores will pop right back up with the first warm rays of sunshine. They grow marvelously in wooded gardens where they contrast with ferns and coral bells. With all these fabulous attributes, it’s easy to see why they are so beloved among gardeners. Although undoubtably, the biggest reason why gardeners love them so is that they are the harbingers of what’s to come: the first signs of life in the garden for the new year. They are the star of winter and rightfully so. ✦

James River Media’s Mari White spoke with Executive Director Kris Shabestar and Communications Director Becky Tweedy about this remarkable milestone. that meal delivery is error-free and that the volunteer experience is as seamless as possible! In addition to our fresh, nutritionally balanced regular menu, we also provide “special” meals, which are modified for allergies, medication interactions, chewing and swallowing issues, etc. We provide directions for delivery, and we follow up on anyone who doesn’t answer the door as expected or anything out of the ordinary. But the most important thing we do each day is provide the opportunity for our volunteers to interact with each recipient, addressing the critical issues of loneliness and isolation faced by so many people who are homebound.

Mari: Three million meals! Amazing! How did you plan for the delivery of that milestone meal? Becky: On October 12th, each recipient received a specially designated “3 millionth meal” to commemorate the occasion. It was far too special an event to limit the celebration to one recipient and one volunteer. We wanted each and every volunteer and recipient to celebrate this achievement and share in the fun! Mari: Give our readers a snapshot of what you do for so many of Lynchburg’s most vulnerable residents every day. Kris: Each weekday morning, our staff manages literally thousands of details before the sun comes up − to ensure

Mari: Milestones like 50 years and 3 million meals don’t happen without the support of a LOT of people. How would you describe the generosity of the Lynchburg community? Becky: The Lynchburg community is AMAZING! They came together 50 years ago to help create this organization, and they have certainly been with us every step of the way. During the pandemic, many Meals on Wheels organizations across the country had to scale back or close temporarily − but not Lynchburg! With the support of this community through volunteers, donations and advocacy, we never stopped serving; we never said “no,” and we grew to meet the expanding need.

DID YOU KNOW? Because Meals on Wheels of Greater Lynchburg does not receive any state or federal funding, we have more flexibility to serve people of all ages and all incomes and use discretion to make common-sense decisions to meet the needs of our community. For example, last year the youngest adult we served was 18 years old and the oldest senior was 102. 30

Mari: Tell us a little more about that expanding need. Kris: The number of meals we deliver has increased dramatically (65% in just the last three years), and we now have multiple meal distribution locations to make volunteering more efficient and facilitate that growth. But what is most significant is what has NOT changed: we still have a few volunteers who have been delivering since almost the very beginning! And we still know it is not just about the meal − it is about creating a connection, building a relationship and providing that vital safety check. Mari: What surprises people about Meals on Wheels? Becky: Nationally and locally, Meals on Wheels organizations are saving their communities millions of dollars in healthcare costs. Good nutrition before and after operations or procedures plays a vital role in reducing re-admissions to the hospital. We enable people to stay home and out of costly healthcare institutions, while improving the physical and mental health of recipients. In the Lynchburg area, our research shows that 98% of our recipients feel more secure because a volunteer stops by daily, and 96% feel stronger or healthier after receiving our meals. Mari: What do volunteers say is the most rewarding part? Kris: You get to meet some of the most interesting and wonderful people in town. Some recipients have travelled the world and have fabulous stories to share, while others have lived quiet lives nearby, with grace and dignity. The most rewarding part of volunteering is the relationships that form over time. Whenever I thank a volunteer for their help, more often than not they tell me, “I get so much more out of delivering than I can ever give.”

Trending now Ashley Hilbish, principal designer at Curtains, Blinds & Bath (CB&B) located in Forest, says the trends for this holiday season will heavily feature organic and natural materials that focus on bringing the outside in. “While buying at market earlier this year, we saw a lot of felts being used in ornaments and garland,” Hilbish says. “Organic textiles in their natural form are very popular as well as off-white or creamy colors. I think the reason natural materials and neutral colors are still very big is because pretty much everyone can incorporate the trend into whatever holiday décor they already have.” Earthy tones and woodland vibes remain one of the top trends for this season. And, believe it or not, mushrooms seem to have jumped from autumn to winter and are everywhere! “Mushrooms were incredibly popular at market, and can be brought in as little figurines or ornaments,” Hilbish says. Minimal effort, maximum effect For some, decorating for the holidays can be overwhelming. If you find yourself in this position with limited time, it’s important to remember that you don’t have to go over the top. In fact, less truly is more. Here are four places to focus your energy for holiday decorating. n The tree. “The obvious one is the tree,” Hilbish says. “So many people buy too little ornaments. If you want your tree to make a statement, purchase six or more of the same ornaments to keep the tree cohesive. Also, buy ornaments in varying shapes and sizes to keep it varied — you don’t want 400 of the same round 4-inch balls.” Layer in some other textural elements, such as ribbons tied to branches, picks or stems stuffed in any holes, or of course, garland. Ditch the traditional tree skirt and add a natural, woven basket or tree collar instead. These ways of adding various depths, textures, and colors are sure to create an eyecatching tree that will be the center of attention.

n The table. Another important space to be sure to decorate is the kitchen or dining room table. As loved ones gather, your table is in its most use. Make an impact here with a festive centerpiece or table setting. n The front door. “Third, I would invest in beautiful garland and a wreath and frame out the front of your home,” Hilbish says. “Focusing on the entryway and adding a pretty doormat just makes it so inviting and instantly festive as soon as people come into your home.” n The lights. Kathy Potts, owner of Decorating Den Interiors in Forest, says that if you do one thing and one thing only, lights are a must. “I always have to have lights both on and in my house,” Potts says. “There is just something so warm and fuzzy about them that instantly gives that Christmas glow. Whether it’s iciclestyle lights hanging in windows or battery-operated candles on a mantle, lights are just important.”

On a budget If you’re not as limited on time but are on a budget, there are countless DIY projects available on various social media platforms. Paper decorations are the ultimate home crafter’s dream as well as one of the hottest trends. Think paper snowflakes and chains and garland made out of book pages, newspaper or brown Kraft paper bags. A quick search on Pinterest or TikTok will provide an abundance of ideas. Get the whole family involved and embrace the homemade feel. “I’ve found estate sales here in Lynchburg can be a fun, inexpensive way to acquire holiday décor,” Hilbish says. “Purchasing Christmas décor at the end of the season during big clear out sales is also a great way to be thrifty, which we do here [at CB&B].” Using fresh garland is the more affordable – and aromatic – way to go; just remember you can’t put it up too early, as it won’t last forever. Natural foliage is also, once again, a top trend for this season. In addition to greenery, be prepared to see plenty of pampas grass and dried fruits and flowers in festive displays. See our article on decorating with greenery on page 49. Potts suggests taking the time to really figure out what colors or theme you love. “Start with just one item you absolutely adore and build from that,” she says. “For example, I love teal blue, white and silver colors so that is what I stick with. I know I’m not going to bring something in that isn’t going to go with those colors, so the key is to find what gives you pleasure, and don’t deviate as you gather your décor.” 36

Tight on space If space is an issue, pencil trees are perfect. A flocked tree is also a smart option, as it doesn’t require as much decorating and minimizes storage space needs. Garland is a great way to decorate a smaller space as it packs a punch with minimal effort. It doesn’t take up a lot of surface area and can be placed on any type of existing handrail, mantle or table. Take advantage of vertical space. Hang ornaments and pendants from the ceiling above a table and add twinkle lights for some dimension. Lean into the neutral trend and keep things bright, as lighter colors help a room to feel more spacious. Hilbish says one major thing they focus on at CB&B is helping consumers get the most out of their holiday décor. Trees, snowflakes and wood tones give a nod to the whole season and will

make your house feel cozy and festive through January. Potts also tries to get the most out of her décor by making some aspects seasonal versus holiday. “I do my mantle in a beautiful snow scene with lots of greenery, white candles and silver accents,” she says. “It’s very wintery and even stays up until March!” For anyone feeling a bit burdened by the holidays, Potts shares her best piece of advice. “Every year it seems to come faster and faster, and I used to never seem quite ready,” she says. “But, a few years ago, I made myself go into local stores after Thanksgiving and just fully immerse myself in the decorations. I have no agenda of buying anything, just completely becoming one with what is around me, and it works. It puts me right in the mood, and then I’m ready.” ✦

Renovating existing spaces or building new When working with existing porches and decks, Collins makes sure they are structurally sound and up to code before any work begins. Building a roofline over a deck makes it more usable, even if it is only over one half of it, but Collins recommends a seamless tie to the existing roof for resale purposes. Pop-up gazebos and umbrellas are another easy DIY way to provide shade on a sizzling summer day if roofing is not in the budget. When building a new deck, Collins notes that maintenance-free decking is one of the biggest things that clients are looking for. He uses a composite material from Trex for his constructions. “It’s more expensive than regular treated wood decking, but it’s worth it. No one has ever regretted building a deck from Trex,” he says. Similarly, when screening in a porch, Collins says that maintenance-free railings made of either vinyl or aluminum powder are popular options that eliminate yearly cleaning and painting chores. Luxury projects are limitless, but outdoor kitchens and bars need to be winterized. You need a cut off to water sources and icemaker lines when the weather drops to freezing. It’s always important to buy outdoor-rated appliances and weatherproof furniture. Wood with a high oil content such as teak hold up well. Other options include polyethylene wicker and aluminum. ozying up to a toasty fire while the cold wind whirls around outside is the essence of the holiday season. Even if you rely on a central heating system, it’s hard to feel at home without a fireplace. If you’re planning to build in the new year, house hunting or kicking off a wish list of upgrades, local professionals can help you choose the right hot spot for your family. Fuel factor Wood or gas? It’s a never-ending debate in the fireplace industry, but no matter who you talk to, innovations have greatly improved efficiency on both sides. To some homeowners, it’s about tradition: The hearty, smoky smell and crackling sounds of a wood fire awaken the senses. “There’s something about an open, roaring fire in the fireplace that people will always be drawn to,” says Ben Briscoe, vice president of Black Goose Chimney Service. Although his company sells, installs and services wood and gas fireplace options all year long, he says many of their customers prefer the self-sufficiency of solid fuel: “There’s always the fear of a power outage, and they want to be the one warm house on the block.”

Today’s models have come a long way from our grandmother’s old-timey wood stove, he says. A heavily regulated part of the heating industry, manufacturers of freestanding wood stoves and wood-burning fireplace inserts (a completely sealed unit placed into an existing fireplace structure) have made big strides in bringing cleaner-burning models and striking designs to market. It used to be that the larger the stove, the more heat. But smaller units are now holding a consistent burn for 12+ hours with a full load of wood, and many models can stretch that to 18-22 hours. “It means you’re burning a lot less wood for a lot more heat — and there’s no heat quite like wood heat.” Today’s models are also adding a ton of character along with the comfort. There’s something mesmerizing about gazing at flames, and you can do that even better now with stoves and inserts that feature clear, ceramic glass panes on the loading door and a specially engineered “air wash” system that forces air over the inside of the glass to keep it from blackening with soot. There’s even a modern design that features glass on three sides. Wood-burning fireplace inserts come in an array of finish accents, from ornate nickel and brass to enamel. For a luxurious look, Black Goose offers a glossy, chestnut brown-enameled insert, one of Briscoe’s personal favorites. “Not only are these products utilitarian, with all the heat you need and more, but they are very attractive to look at,” he adds. “When you install something like that, the perfect setting is a large grand area that needs a new focal point — you want people to walk in and take notice.”

Briscoe says they have installed wood-burning appliances in homes of all sizes and styles. But when tradition doesn’t win out and convenience is a top priority, there’s a place for gas options too. He says they have many offerings in “direct vent” gas appliances — fully gasketed and sealed units with attractive glass fronts that often run on thermostatic control with a remote. “Direct vent” refers to a system where air is pulled in from outside the home and the exhaust — all the by-products of combustion — are directly routed out of the home. Laura Borel, head of sales and marketing for Francis Oil & Propane, says direct vent gas fireplaces are becoming the norm. With their eco-friendly reputations, they are highly recommended for those with pets or allergies. The systems can be built-in for new construction or made to fit into an existing fireplace. No chimney? No problem! Installing a direct vent gas fireplace is an alternative if you don’t have a chimney but want an efficient heating appliance along with the ambiance of a large, traditional fireplace. Vents can be easily routed through an exterior wall and aren’t greatly affected by drafts and air pressure changes, so the heat isn’t escaping like it does through a traditional fireplace chimney. A single double-walled pipe can both pull in air from the outside and expel exhaust outside as the unit radiates heat right into your room. Ventless gas logs can also be installed without a fireplace but have some safety restrictions. Since the invention of the direct vent, “a fireplace is possible

for anyone,” Borel says. “We can always run gas lines and get them going with propane.” If your current heating system works well but you long for a decorative fireplace, another option is to go electric. There’s no mess or maintenance; you’re essentially running a fancy light show and a supplemental heater. Electric fireplaces are generally much cheaper, require no installation, and are safe to the touch, so there’s no worry with young, curious hands. Some high-end models have very realistic flames, and you can even change the color with a remote, from a traditional orange flame to blue or purple. Electric fireplaces are never meant to be a primary heat source, but they can take the chill off. Many have separate switches for heat and lights, so you can switch on the “flames” even in the summer.

Going linear Modern fireplaces are keeping up with the minimalistic, sleek trend in home design today, quite literally flipping the traditional style on its side. Rectangular or “linear” fireplaces, usually installed as a built-in, have become trendy centerpieces or “impact walls” as designers call them. While they look luxurious, their functionality has just as much appeal. Borel says there are linear inserts that range from 48 to 72 inches wide. Some popular designs are “see-through” styles, where you can walk around the entire fireplace in the same room or view one side from your living room and the other side from your patio.

Trends Homeowners are also embracing other modern features, from adding a bed of river stones or crushed glass to getting creative with fronts and liners. Borel says one trend is to add dimension to the liner option with stone or brick; the herringbone pattern and using larger bricks are also trends becoming more popular. She’s also seeing a break from the usual black interior and a move toward a warmer gray or beige. She’s getting requests for a black glass mirror-like liner for an elegant look where “you can really see the flames dancing.” Homeowners are also ordering more decorative fronts. “Whatever your style is, there’s a front for you — from rustic and Western to more modern,” she says. And whether you prefer the vented or ventless versions, gas logs are also getting more attractive. Borel says she’s seeing more birch logs and the option to add glowing embers throughout the burner. 60

Making the switch Sometimes our families need change. Wood may have been your choice when you moved in but you’re considering switching to gas for the convenience. Borel says her customers are converting to gas, either adding a set of gas logs or an entire gas insert “because it’s cleaner, it’s cost effective and it’s safer. Gas logs are a great backup source of heat and add ambiance to a room.” Even those who are apprehensive about gas usually find it worthwhile to make the switch, she says. “We educate our customers on how to safely use their appliance. They have to trust it. It’s very regulated; there are rules and laws in the industry. That’s why it’s important for them to choose a company that both sells and services the appliance — we can help them choose the right one for them. Speaking to a professional and having someone come out to your home can head off those issues.” But if you fall in the camp where you miss the authentic wood fireplace you grew up with and your new home has a gas unit that you don’t feel comfortable

using, there is an option to revert back to wood. Briscoe says he’s actually seeing a lot of people make this change, especially with how efficient wood-burning stoves have become. His company deals heavily in the restoration of older fireplaces to burn wood. The process begins with a thorough Level 2 inspection (which he suggests for every new home inspection) and continues with annual maintenance. “The chimney is always the most neglected portion of the home … Unless you have it regularly maintained, there’s

a 99% chance you have something that needs checked.” If you want the best of both worlds, some of the country’s most high-end fireplace models are just coming onto the scene with the option for the homeowner to convert from wood to gas and vice versa themselves — whenever they want. On a cold winter day, a fire always beckons. As you explore the diverse range of fireplace options available today, you may just warm up to one that is the perfect fit for your family. ✦

Fortunately, erecting a fence or wall is not the only way to create a retreat. Screening out prying eyes and hiding unlovely sights can be accomplished with strategically placed plants, both inside and out.

Inside out While potted plants work wonders as sight barriers and dividers inside open concept apartments and on patios, hedges are the most popular screens for outside spaces. Shrubs are the leaders in effective screens, but other plants such as trees, vines and ornamental grasses may also be used. One of the major advantages that growing various plants to form hedges has over building fences is that plants are likely to attract birds and bees and will change with the seasons, adding greater landscape interest. Fast-growing shrubs If you need to quickly screen your property, the Chinese fringe flower is an evergreen shrub which grows at the rate of 2 feet annually, has delicate, perfumed blooms and is deer resistant. It likes acidic soil and grows well in full sun to partial shade. Another fast-growing shrub prized for its color is the Diablo cultivar of the Common Ninebark. This deer resistant shrub with burgundy leaves may reach its full height of 8 to 10 feet in only one year, tolerates clay soil and grows well in full sun to partial shade. An olfactory treasure that blooms in springtime, the Common Lilac grows abut 2 feet per year in loamy soil and full sun to partial shade, reaches a mature height of 8-15 feet and has the added benefit of being deer resistant, an important attribute even in suburban locales.

Shade-tolerant shrubs There are several shrubs that grow especially well in Virginia’s mostly moderate climate. One of the most popular is the Yew, which will thrive no matter how sunlight-deprived, and it can, surprisingly, also tolerate full sun. This hardy shrub grows only a foot per year but may reach an eventual height of 4 to 60 feet, depending on variety. This makes the shrub particularly wellsuited for homeowners who expect to stay in their homes for a lifetime. The fact that all parts of this shrub are toxic means they are highly deer resistant, as well. The green glossy leaves of the Spotted Laurel make it look as if it has been splattered with yellow paint, earning it the nickname of the gold dust plant. This shrub produces bright red berries in the wintertime and grows to 6-10 feet in height and 5-9 feet in width. The larger Rhododendron evergreen shrub is prized for its vivid violet clusters of flowers in spring, summer and fall, plus it has a mature size of 2-20 feet in height and 3-15 feet in width. 66

Shrubs with special attributes A smaller, flowering evergreen shrub that requires minimal maintenance is the Daphne. This plant typically grows into a rounded shape, making pruning an easy job. It blooms in spring, thrives in full sun or partial shade and is deer resistant. Rather than stay evergreen, the Firepower Nandina changes color as the months pass, going from green to bright red and never dropping all its leaves. The more petite varieties make good low hedge plants and are adaptable from full sun to full shade and may easily be pruned into various shapes. Prized for its slow growth and limited size, the Wintercreeper of the Euonymus family has vibrant bluegreen leaves with serrated white edges and grows in a round shape. Its best feature is its tolerance of drought, heat or cold. With the selection of just-right plants, a private retreat can be yours. ✦

is the season of gathering and enjoying cozy, hearty and often decadent meals with family and loved ones. It’s undoubtedly my favorite time of year to be in the kitchen! It can be the season of feeding more people than you are used to, and while we love that, it doesn’t have to be an overwhelming parade of fussy recipes. May I suggest the ease and deliciousness of a casserole to make those holiday spirits and tummies bright?! These three recipes are great for a crowd and make amazing leftovers. They can be made ahead or frozen. I adore these recipes because they go any direction you like! If you need breakfast, lunch or a dinnertime meal, go for it. Brie and Sausage Bread Pudding 4 eggs 3 ½ cups whipping cream + more if needed* 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon dried thyme, minced ¼ teaspoon black pepper, ground

½ teaspoon kosher salt 6 cups sourdough, dried & cubed 1 ½ cups sausage, cooked & crumbled 5 ounces brie, cut into ½-inch pieces ⅓ cup scallions, snipped

Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly coat the inside of 9 x 13 casserole dish with cooking spray and set aside. In a bowl, whisk together eggs, cream, garlic, salt and pepper and thyme. Gently stir in bread cubes, sausage, brie and scallions. Pour into the casserole dish. “Smush” the pudding a little to make sure there is enough moisture. If it's not wet, add more cream or milk. Cook for 30 to 40 minutes until set and golden brown! *Half & half or whole milk may be used as a substitute. 69

1 loaf panettone 1 cup butter (halved) 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon ground black pepper ½ teaspoon nutmeg, ground 3 Tablespoons sage, finely chopped or dried (halved) ½ cup golden raisins

½ cup dried sour cherries, chopped ½ cup dried apricots, chopped Boiling water 1 ½ cup yellow onion, finely chopped 1 cup celery, finely chopped 1 cup carrots, finely chopped 2 ½ cups chicken broth

Preheat the oven to 375°F. Cut the panettone into 1-inch squares, and set aside. Melt half the butter in a saucepan (be careful not to burn, but brown until it reaches a nutty aroma). Remove from the heat, and add salt, pepper, nutmeg and half the sage. Pour over the panettone and toss together. Spread out on baking sheets, and bake for about 10 minutes. Set aside in a large bowl. While that is baking, place the dried fruit in a bowl, and add boiling water to cover the fruit. Set aside to plump and soften. Once softened and plump, drain the water. Heat the remaining butter in a saucepan, and add onion, celery and carrot. Cook over medium heat until softened. Stir in the fruit and remaining sage. Pour over panettone, and add the broth to moisten. Pour into a 9 x 13 casserole dish, and bake until golden brown, about 40 minutes. Pumpkin Mac & Cheese 1 pound “twisty” pasta (cooked al dente) 6 Tablespoons salted butter + more to grease 2 teaspoons salt ½ teaspoon black pepper 1 pound sharp cheddar, grated + more for topping

4 ounces Pecorino Romano, grated 1 ½ cups whipping cream* 1 ¼ cups pumpkin puree 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 ¼ cups panko breadcrumbs ½ cup pepitas, raw

Preheat the oven to 475°F. Grease a 9 x 13 casserole pan and set aside. In the same pot you cooked your pasta in, brown your butter over medium heat. It will turn golden and get foamy and should smell nutty. Turn the heat down to low, and add the pasta. Toss with the butter. Add the salt, pepper, three-quarters of the cheddar, Pecorino and cream. Stir until you have a creamy sauce. Mix in the pumpkin puree and nutmeg. Turn off the heat, and transfer to the casserole dish. Sprinkle cheddar, panko and the pepitas seeds over the top and bake for 15 to 20 minutes until the panko is toasted!

hen Lynchburg residents talk about must-see Christmas houses, one address comes up over and over. The home of Erica and Ken Fore, which sits at the end of a long driveway behind a cedar fence on Boonsboro Road, has become one of the most popular sites for those looking to raise their Christmas spirits with outdoor illumination. The road to Lynchburg The Fores have lived in Lynchburg for more than a decade, but their path here was not linear. Ken was born in Fairbanks, Alaska, into a military family; his dad was a colonel in the United States Air Force. Ken earned his medical degree in the Caribbean, did clinical work at Louisiana State University in New Orleans and completed his residency at Western Michigan University in 2010. Erica, on the other hand, hails from Texas. She attended the University of Texas and was an account executive at Dell Computer, specifically working as a pharmaceutical sales representative during this time. homemaga zineva .com

After meeting on a blind date, Ken and Erica married six months later. Upon graduating his psychiatry residency, the Fores moved to Lynchburg. Their home’s décor is influenced by the many places the Fores have lived. The Fore household also includes their baseball-loving 16-year-old son, three big dogs (a Newfoundland, a lab mix and a pit bull/hound mix), a fat cat and four chickens. The Fores have always been passionate supporters for animal rights and spay neuter programs. Needless to say, life is not boring.

Making their house a home Erica is proud to say that her husband is very handy and has worked on many of the projects around the house. For the main work, JC Lynchburg Construction provided the heavy lifting. The main floor of the house has been their focus, and nearly every surface has been touched in the remodel. The Fores say that they “love a project, even if there really isn’t one, we will make it one.” They want their house to feel very comfortable and have leaned into the midcentury modern design aesthetic in many of their décor choices. They regularly look to Restoration Hardware, Arhaus, Green Front Furniture and artwork from local vendors. One of the biggest projects in the house was remodeling the kitchen. They started by taking out a wall so that the kitchen flowed into the den, and they outlined the new case opening with antique pine barn wood from Alabama. They also added this wood to the ceiling, which gave warmth to the space. All of the cabinets were repurposed and updated by painting them navy and adding new gold hardware. Some of the cabinet fronts were reworked to add glass. White tiles with gray veins replaced the vinyl flooring. White subway tile provides the backsplash, and granite countertops with brown and gray tones merge the color of the ceiling with the work surface. The sink is centered along the back wall and overlooks the backyard, with views of Tobacco Row Mountain. 76

Fore’s ‘four’ style On the other side of the kitchen island, the den is perhaps the most used room in the house when guests come over. A working fireplace resides along the back wall of the house. Above it is a horse painting with the number four on it. “Four” is a theme around the house stemming from Ken being born on the 4th day of the fourth month and the fourth Fore in his family. Mesquite wood sourced from Erica’s sister and home state of Texas was used for the mantle. Bookshelves line another wall in the den. They are backed with the same cedar that was used for the front fence. A gray leather tufted sofa and two tan occasional chairs provide the seating for the room. An oriental rug gives the room the pop of pattern that it needs. Along another wall, bright, happy original paintings done by New Orleans artist Matt Rinard depict a cat providing counseling to a dog on a sofa, a dog in a lab coat and a dog drinking a martini. The family’s love of dogs and Ken’s chosen profession are perfectly merged.

Off the den, the dining room also showcases a barnwood ceiling. A long rectangular modern farmhouse wooden dining room table centers the room with eight leather seats situated around it. For Christmas, the table decorations consist of greenery and antlers found on the property. A modern gold and black light fixture adds an industrial touch to the room and the saltwater fish tank adds whimsy. Function & comfort Immediately outside the dining room, one enters a game room. A poker table purchased at Green Front provides the central piece for the room. There is a distinct aeronautical feel to this room, which nods to Ken’s dad. Two chairs at the end of the room are fashioned from metal and leather to look like vintage aircrafts. On the opposite wall from the plane chairs, resides a bar cabinet that is lined in rivets. To soften all the leather and steel, an oriental rug grounds the space. 80

A living room dwells along the front of the house. Brown leather sofas and chairs provide comfortable seating in the room. A unique fuselage piece from a Mohawk plane that Ken’s dad flew while in the Army stationed in Korea is found in the room. Black and white prints of different aircraft hang on the walls as well. A fireplace along the front wall adds architectural interest. A long rectangular mirror reflects light around the room, particularly at Christmas with the white lights that meander through the greenery on the mantle. The Fores like to sit in the room and watch the “customers” drive down the decked-out driveway at Christmastime. homemaga zineva .com

On the other side of the house, the Fores remodeled a guest bathroom in tones of gray. The same marble was used on both the sink countertop and shower surround. A walk-in shower was also added, done in gray tones as well. All the hardware and lighting are black, adding to the clean and modern feel. The Fores looked to Timberlake Lighting for all of the fixtures they updated in the house. Next to this bathroom, the Fores turned a spare bedroom into a workout room for their family, complete with padded floor.

Along the back of this side of the house, the main bedroom and bath have also been reworked. What was once an old bedroom is now the dreamy main bathroom. A walk-in shower has white tiles along the walls and gray hexagonal tiles on the floor, mirroring a 1950s look. White vessel sinks rest on top of a gray vanity. A stand-alone tub sits off at an angle, on top of hardwood floors. Next to it lives the Ficus “tree of love” adorned with white Christmas lights. The Fores purchased this tree together 23 years ago and have kept it alive, moving it from home to home. They joke that if the tree lives, so does their love. Ken did all the demolition and framing for this room with JC Lynchburg Construction finishing the project. The main bedroom features furniture in the midcentury modern farmhouse style. The walls are painted a slate blue/gray color that allows the outdoors to be the focus through the numerous windows. The views seen of Tobacco Row Mountain from the kitchen are also found here. 82

Decking the halls Christmas décor inside the house leans toward rustic wooden pieces that might be found in nature. Erica likes to use fresh greenery and organic details on the mantels and bookshelves. The first Christmas tree they ever bought for this house is planted outside in the yard. The outside décor is another story. Every square inch of real estate is covered with brightly colored illuminated figurines of dogs, chickens, nativity scenes and more. Each year, the family tries to add to the display with items that are meaningful to them. Most of these are LED lights, which makes storage easier because they can be folded down flat. Thank goodness the Fores have ample storage in their basement for this labor of love. The property was originally the Guy A. Dirom estate, a chicken farm. The Fores have cleared over three acres, much of which was overtaken with invasive bamboo and Autumn Olive trees that prevented them from being able to even walk to the end of their property. Erica is a master naturalist, meaning that she focuses on native trees and flowers in her gardens. She has added white and red oaks, redbuds, dogwoods and crab apple trees to the grounds. She used native flowers in her beds along the side of the house. The Fores view themselves as caretakers of a very special place, and this belief extends to the native wildlife around them. They are proud to share their land with native animals like bear, deer, foxes, rabbits, vole and a cornucopia of native birds, including wild turkeys. Christmas at the Fores’ home is both a mix of rustic warmth on the interior and modern bright lights on the exterior. Industrial modern farmhouse touches mix seamlessly with the nature that is seen outside of every window. To quote Clark Griswold Sr. in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, the Fore’s home “is a beaut” and not to be missed. ✦

ince 2014, local men have been growing cheesy mustaches each November in order to better support the nonprofits serving children in Central Virginia. Now entering its 10th year, Mustaches 4 Kids (M4K) Lynchburg has already raised more than $2 million dollars, and they’re aiming for their biggest year yet with a goal of $600,000 in 2023. HOME Editor Donna Dunn sat down with M4K Founders Chris Boswell and Lanny Duncan to learn more about “Grow-vember” and the difference it makes in our community. Donna: Give me the backstory on how you got here. Chris: I’ve been on the Boys & Girls Club Board for 17 years. It was still a relatively new charity to Lynchburg at the time, and we were trying to raise money. Lanny and I had a friend who ran the Richmond M4K. When I called Lanny about doing M4K here, he instantly said “yes.” The first year was just a few guys, but we raised $34,000 — and it kept growing, even through COVID! Donna: What makes this work? Chris: It’s fun, inclusive and requires a finite amount of time. You’ve got an army of guys raising money for 30 days.

Donna: Are you doing anything different for your 10th anniversary? Chris: We’ve got a lot of new things, starting with our anniversary logo. Lanny: My mom, Joyce Duncan, has made a quilt that we will be selling, along with 10 original mustache-themed paintings by local Lynchburg artists. We’ll also have a merch store for the first time. Donna: M4K is seriously good fun, but for a serious cause, right? Chris: That’s right! We’ve really gotten to know these nonprofits serving kids. We go to their Board meetings. There are big issues these nonprofits are addressing. Just to name one: Park View Community Mission sends backpacks full of food home with about 2,000 children every Friday. That program alone costs $400,000 a year. There are a lot of prevention and intervention organizations in our area doing great, great work. Donna: So you have a big finale each year called the “Stache Bash.” You call it a “cross between a beauty pageant, a dog show, and a police lineup!” What else can you say? Chris: Growers wear costumes, we have contests and the Whiskey Shakes performs. Last year we went into the Bash $10,000 short of our $500,000 goal, but by the end of the night we had $515,000! Each year when the Bash is done, Lanny and I sit down and look at each other and say, “Whew! We made it!”

The time to investigate purchasing and installing a generator is before the emergency. Unless you have significant experience installing a generator yourself, hire a professional. Some high stakes errors could lead to burns, shocks and carbon monoxide poisoning. Generators are available in different sizes, depending on the power needed, and there are different types of generators to choose from. They can run on gasoline, propane, diesel, natural gas or solar energy. Noise levels can range from 50-100 decibels. Let’s explore your options.

Portable generators Portable generators can be set up in an open space and are meant to support a few appliances. Power can be delivered via extension cord, or you can have a transfer switch installed, which allow some parts of your overall electrical system to function. There are also portable “inverter” generators that can be cranked up or down depending on how much power you need. Portables will run for about 8 to 10 hours before they need refueling and can be a little more elaborate, with exhaust systems that help keep the noise level down. And finally, there are also solar generators, which are much lighter and quieter.

Whole-house generator When most people think of home generators, they are usually thinking of larger “whole house” generators, also called standby generators. The downside to these units? They are expensive, permanent and large. The upside? They give your home significant auxiliary power. They are hard-wired and are usually connected to a large reserve of fuel, like a gas tank or a propane gas line. They also require professional installation by experts with knowledge of local building codes and familiarity with the necessary testing and inspections. These turn on when the power cuts off and flip back off when your primary power returns — which would also help when you are away. If the power cuts out in a storm while you are out of town, a whole-house generator will kick in on its own, saving your food from spoiling and keeping security systems active. If you are home and require the use of any medical devices, these can literally be lifesavers. Additionally, if you have a well pump, a generator can keep your water flowing when the electricity is out. 88

The size of the generator you need depends on what percentage of your home you want powered. The whole house or maybe a few key areas like your kitchen? A licensed professional can advise on what you need, although you can estimate how much wattage you use by checking the labeling on specific appliances, or just look at the daily average on your electric bill. Getting the biggest unit possible might waste a lot of gas and money providing more power than you use. On the flip side, you wouldn’t want to get the smallest unit, only to find it doesn’t meet your needs.

rowing up one of my family’s favorite holiday movies to watch was National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. My dad always got a kick out of seeing the main character, Clark Griswold, and all of his mishaps installing lights — falling off his ladder, bulbs blowing and power shortages. While it’s fun to sit back and laugh at this Christmas light escapade, it’s probably not something you want to deal with in your own life. Whether you love bright and tacky or classy and cohesive, lighting up the holidays doesn’t have to be so hard.

WHAT’S THE PROCESS WHEN WORKING WITH A PRO?

It starts with the design. Some homeowners have that Hallmark image in their minds and want something immaculate and stunning. Others are at a loss and don’t even know where to begin. During the consultation process, your lighting team should work with you to decide on the perfect design that fits your home and style preference. “We have a Shutterfly book with a lot of pictures from last year, just to help them see what’s available,” Hamel said. “My salespeople are all trained in design and helping design what you want.” The first step of the process is deciding what color lights to use on your house. And we’re not just simply talking about whites vs. color. There are warm and cool shades of white, classic colors or more vibrant LEDs. After the lights have been chosen, you can decide what features of your house you want to accentuate. Popular locations include the gutter line, the roof peaks and smaller trees. You might also choose to wrap smaller trees, such as Crape Myrtles and oaks, with lighting for a classy, yet magical aesthetic. “Every row is angled the same, every spacing is exactly the same, it’s symmetrical,” Hamel said. "You’re not going to look at it and go, ‘Charlie Brown did that.’” Another aspect that helps with keeping everything clean and symmetrical is the fact that Hamel and his team are able to customize the lights to fit each individual house. “We cut everything to fit your house,” Hamel said. “You don’t see extension cords running everywhere, everything is hidden and tucked away and you can’t see it.” According to Hamel, the best part of installing someone’s holiday lights is seeing their reaction for the first time when the lights come on. Hamel said he had one client tell him that when she came home at the end of the day, she would stop about 30 feet out from her house and just park and admire her lights. “A lot of people like to do this not just for their families, but for the whole neighborhood,” Hamel said. “…it just makes people feel good.”

DIY decorating For some homeowners, putting up lights and decorations themselves brings joy and unleashes creativity. You might take a do-it-yourself approach because you love it — or it better fits your budget. Here are tips to make the job more doable! n Measure twice, buy once. Decide where you want to install lights and measure to be sure you buy enough to cover the space. n Draw a diagram. Make a map for yourself so you have a plan for where the lights will go and how they will connect to your electrical outlets. HGTV advises buying lights with 6-inch spacing for a “fuller look.” Using that spacing, you can then calculate the materials needed with this equation: distance/6 = number of lights needed. n Put them to the test. Before hanging any lights, plug them in and be sure all the lights come on. n Hold tight. Use clips to install along the gutter line or zip ties to hold lights in place on branches. n Stay safe. When installing the lights (which often requires a ladder), always have a helper nearby. Also consider placing a GFCI stake in the ground as your power source. Pay attention to connection limits and only buy outdoor-grade lights. If you’re not sure about your electrical capabilities, consult an electrician or lighting pro. n Be tech-savvy. Use a smart plug to control the lights from your phone. Or use a traditional timer at the power source so the lights come on automatically. Whether you hire a pro or go DIY, light up the holidays this season — Hallmark or Griswold style! You’ll be making the neighborhood a bit merrier for all.

I made this! GRANOLA

Even though granola is expensive to buy, it’s actually very economical to make and a healthy treat. A large container of oldfashioned rolled oats at most grocery stores is less than $2.50 and makes more than three batches of granola! You can get creative, but start with this simple recipe: mix together two cups of oats, ½ teaspoon salt and two teaspoons of cinnamon and set aside; melt ¼ cup honey or pure maple syrup together with ¼ cup coconut oil, then add a half a teaspoon of vanilla; pour over the oats; mix well. Here’s where you get creative. Mix in your choice of shredded coconut, seeds, nuts or dried fruit. Lightly grease a baking sheet and spread your mixture to make a thin layer. Bake it on 300°F for 30 minutes. The granola may be slightly soft, but it will harden as it cools. Be careful not to overcook! Once it’s cool, place your granola in an airtight container that you can decorate for gift giving. SNACK MIX

You can make it as healthy or as yummy as you want! Simply toss your favorite treats into a bowl, mix together, and pour into decorative, airtight containers. Cereal, nuts, raisins and other dried fruit, candies, pretzels, popcorn, marshmallows, crackers … the list is endless. Garlic powder, melted butter or cajun seasoning added can really elevate the mix. So easy to make and so tasty! INFUSED VINEGARS

Infused vinegars elevate your recipes and make wonderful gifts for your foodie friends. Simply pour your vinegar selection into a mason jar and add the herbs. The herbs will start to flavor your vinegar within 24 hours and intensify within a few weeks. Strain the herbs and pour the vinegar into decorative bottles. Add custom labels for a finished touch. Some of the best vinegars to use include apple cider, rice, white, white wine or balsamic. Popular herb combinations: parsley, rosemary and sage; crushed fennel seeds and the zest of lemon, lime and orange; tarragon and garlic. Your homemade vinegar will also make delicious salad dressing. What items are used daily? These take priority and need to be easily located. Putting it all back reveals what you have and shows what you need. Put like-minded objects such as gloves together in one container. Hang little ones’ jackets on low hooks for easy retrieval. Box up off-season pieces in covered bins that can be pulled out and organized when the season changes. Notice what needs refreshing. Is it time to restring the tennis rackets, replace a worn-out winter jacket or buy new gloves? Good organizing clarifies what you have and what to put on the shopping list. Make the most of your space Closets provide loads of space when they are used to their full potential. Purchasing baskets that fit side by side on the current shelving allows more items to be stored. While the space is empty, dust and wipe down the walls and shelves, and vacuum the floor. Organize items by type. Work or school clothes go in the front, casual clothes next and formal wear in the back. Box costumes and store them in the back. Under-the-bed bins are good for infrequently used items as well as for sweaters and sweatshirts. Fold shirts and stack on shelves sorting by color. Accessories need to go in baskets or on hooks. Hang a piece of pegboard in a blank spot to hold jewelry. Cabinets are wonderful because doors hide everything. Group like items in cabinets according to what happens in that area. Coffee mugs go in the cabinet over the coffee pot. Pots and pans, plates and spices each get their own cabinet near the stove. Store office supplies near the desk. Tuck toiletries and cleaning supplies in bath cabinets. Drawers need organizers to hold items in place. Wooden box dividers offer an easy way to contain silverware, kitchen gadgets and school supplies. Makeup, hair accessories and bathroom items are easier to find if they have their own cubby. Get the family involved. Make a game of it. Sorting and cleaning can be fun. Really!
