EDITOR’S note When a task or project arises at home— landscape chores become overwhelming, your family room furniture needs a refresh—you can count yourself lucky if you have a trusted list of go-to professionals to help. Often, as homeownership goes, unexpected needs arise too (the dishwasher leaks and ruins the floors and maybe now a whole kitchen renovation is in order?) and you need other pros to step in. Whatever the case may be, we hope HOME magazine’s second annual Readers’ Favorites issue will provide you with a great resource to consider for your next need at home. Think of it as a list of referrals made by thousands of your best friends, featuring the best of the best the area has to offer in home- and garden-related goods and services. In the spirit of “favorites,” in this issue we also showcase the best of the best in the local homes we’ve featured over the years. We hope you’ll be inspired by a second look at the design of some of our favorite spaces inside and out as you imagine and plan future projects. Is a bath renovation on your list? Our feature on three local bath renovations is sure to provide you with a springboard to make your plan a reality. Or maybe you want to tackle smaller design projects this fall before we coast into the holiday season; read all about easy updates for your fireplace, choosing new throw pillows, creating a room in which to enjoy music, and incorporating brown furniture into modern decor (yes, it’s back; in fact it never left). In addition to ideas for feathering your nest, we offer stories to help you focus outward too. If you’re planning to host friends
and family this fall, consider incorporating crostini into your party plan with several recipes for interesting toppings. This appetizer is easy, versatile, and makes a beautiful presentation. Maybe you have new neighbors; our article on housewarming gifts will make welcoming them with something special a breeze. And though things in the garden are winding down, don’t put away the garden tools just yet; now is the time to plant bulbs. Your investment now will yield beautiful spring bouquets. We have included so many of our favorite things in this issue, and we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention another of our most favorite things: our readers.

GARDEN bulb know-how
Plant Now, Bloom Later Fall planting for spring flowers B Y B E C K Y C A LV E R T
While visualizing next spring’s garden may be the furthest thing from your mind right now, fall is the time to plan and execute your spring flower plans. Most of spring’s early bloomers, like crocus, daffodils and tulips, are grown from a bulb— an onion-shaped mass that contains everything a plant needs to burst forth in bloom. Planted in the fall, bulbs need a short time in warm soil to help establish their roots before requiring a chilly period of some length to bloom. Thankfully, this leaves the window for planting them fairly wide.
c vhomemaga zine .com 21
Planting bulbs is perhaps one of the easiest garden tasks there is. They don’t require much in terms of soil beyond it being well drained, so there’s no need to dig up an entire bed and amend it. Because many of these blooms are active before trees leaf out, they can be planted almost anywhere, regardless of their preferred light requirements. They simply need a hole dug about three times their length, which can even be done with a hand-held drill and an attachment called a power planter auger. You can drop some compost or bulb food in the hole before dropping the bulb in, cover it with soil, and voila! You’re set for next spring. You’ll want to water while planting, and if it’s a dry fall, water them from time to time to encourage root growth, but otherwise, you’re done. The hardest part of planting bulbs might just be knowing which side up to plant. Thankfully, the bigger the bulb, the easier that is to sort out: Plant with the pointy side up and the wider part on the bottom. When in doubt, plant the bulb on its side and nature will work it out. Bulbs look best when planted in groupings rather than a straight line, so one concept to keep in mind as you place them in the ground is to form a natural bouquet. Smaller bulbs, like crocus and starflowers, can be planted close together for a fun pop, while larger bulbs like tulips and daffodils can be planted with two to three inches in between. The rule of thumb for planting bulbs leans toward “the more the merrier,” particularly with the smaller bulbs. When planting, consider grouping a dozen (or more) crocus, and half a dozen or more tulips and daffodils. With showier, tall, globe-shaped alliums, keep it to about three per grouping. Work early-blooming spring bulbs into your existing plantings to add pops of color earlier in the season. Or scatter them about, planting daffodils or tulips around the base of a tree, where they can gloriously bloom before trees leaf out, shading plants at their base. Garden centers offer a selection of fall-planting bulbs, but if you want to get some unusual specimens, there are a number of mail-order suppliers and online stores that carry a wide selection of varieties. Most of them won’t ship your order until the proper time to plant, which is quite helpful for beginners. If you are not able to plant your bulbs as soon as they arrive, simply keep them in a cool, dark area until you can get them in the ground. They don’t necessarily need to be refrigerated; they should be fine in a corner of your basement or other storage area out of direct sun. In our area, October is the perfect time to plant fall bulbs, although they can be planted as late as December. You’ll want them in the ground before the first hard freeze, as most spring-blooming bulbs need anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks of cold before they begin to come back to life. Most wildlife should leave your bulbs alone, but on the off chance you have some aggressive squirrels, you can put down a layer of wire mesh when planting the bulbs, pulling it up in late winter before the foliage emerges. Crocuses are generally thought of as the harbingers of spring, as they are the first bulb to bloom at the tail end of winter. Starflowers are another one of the first bloomers in the spring while also blooming again the fall. The inchwide star-shaped flowers are low to the ground and come in blues and white. Hyacinths with their sturdy, fragrant 2 2
Central Virginia HOME Fall 2021
clusters of small blooms offer that first scent of spring, while grape hyacinths and Siberian squill add brilliant little pops of color with their small, brightly colored blooms. The wide array of tulips and daffodils are too numerous to be mention, with over 25,000 cultivars alone of daffodils, varying in height, form and flowers per stem (up to 20!). While there are only 3,000 or so types of tulips out there, they include some showier varieties like the peony flowering tulips, lily flowering tulips and parrot tulips. There is the Dutch iris, with its orchid-like blooms, that is grown from a bulb rather than the rhizome of the more well-known iris. The fritillaria with its downward hanging blooms (including a showstopping checkerboard variety known as the checkered lily) is a rather dramatic addition to the spring garden, as is the allium. A member of the onion and garlic family, allium bloom later in the spring, sending up a large, single globe-shaped bloom that instantly creates a focal point in the garden. With so many to choose from, it’s easy to see how one could devote much of their fall gardening to planting bulbs. They are fairly inexpensive, easy to plant, and the payoff lasts for years beyond one season, with some bulbs naturalizing and spreading out over an area to bloom year after year. With gardening that easy, planting fall bulbs might just become your favorite garden task. ✦

THREE UNIQUE RENOVATIONS SHOWCASE WHAT’S TRENDING IN BATHROOMS
BY C H R I S T Y R I P P E L
Bathrooms are small in square footage relative to the rest of your home, but these tiny rooms can deliver a big hit to the budget. It’s important to make well-considered decisions, especially for fixed elements that are difficult to change, such as tile, cabinetry, plumbing fixtures and countertops. Three Lynchburg-area homeowners invested in their bathrooms in the past year to create more attractive and functional spaces for daily living, and the results are three stunning and unique spaces that convey their personal styles. One bathroom is a second makeover of the space for longtime homeowners who built their house 18 years ago; another is a gut renovation by a couple who recently settled in a 1950s Cape Cod; the third is a to-the-studs renovation that mixes a traditional and midcentury vibe in a 1959 home. Read on to learn about their design and construction processes and maybe even glean some tips for your next renovation project.

PROJECT: CAPE COD MAIN LEVEL BATHROOM’S SLEEK UPDATE
Ashley Hilbish and her husband Nathan were charmed by a classic Cape Cod in the popular Boonsboro neighborhood in 2017, but knew it needed a lot of work to make their vision come to life. “We realized the baths and the kitchen would need major work, and we decided after the kitchen to tackle the main floor bathroom first, because your knees would run into the tub,” says Ashley. In addition to a full tub, which swallowed the 6 by 8 foot room, the space had tile covering the walls, which someone had previously painted. When Ashley attempted to clean the tile, the paint would chip off. The entire room would need to be gutted, and they decided to forgo a tub for a standup shower with a zero entry for more visual space. “Not having that lip, that barrier to the shower makes a continuous line on the floor which opens the room and feels a bit more current,” says Ashley, who is the lead designer in her family’s business, Curtains, Blinds and Bath, helping others make choices for their home projects. Instead of a door, the shower has a glass panel to contain splashes while leaving a sleek entry. The shower wall tile is a 2x10-inch white subway tile with a hand-finished edge in a vertical stack, a twist on tradition. A window in the shower provides natural light, and its trim was removed so that tile would extend to the edge. A patterned porcelain tile covers the entirety of the floor, lending color and interest. “We changed the layout of the bathroom, and we took out the linen closet for more room but added a vanity for storage instead of the pedestal sink,” Ashley says. Another addition was a fan above the shower area to cut down on humidity; code didn’t require one when the home was built. Matte brass fixtures were chosen for an updated look, and the handmade vanity lights were found on Etsy. “I tried to source things that were made in the USA as much as possible,” says Ashley.

Central Virginia HOME Fall 2021
“WE WANTED THE SPACE TO BE MORE MODERN, BUT NOT TO THE POINT IT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE FOR THE DESIGN AND CHARACTER OF THE HOUSE,” ASHLEY SAYS. “YOU WANT IT TO BE UPDATED, BUT NOT TOO TRENDY, SOMETHING THAT STILL HAS THAT CLASSIC FEEL.” Sourcing was more difficult than usual, as COVID-19 caused shipping delays to be extended multiple times, causing Ashley to pivot on some of her initial design decisions. Tile choices were changed, and a different faucet had to be ordered. “I wanted a wall-attached faucet for the sink, but the delays were so numerous I finally gave up on it and chose something I could get my hands on,” she says. The delays created some headaches for Ashley and her contractor, and the project took longer than expected. However, her experience in design helped her weather any challenges, and she enjoyed the process of watching the bathroom come together. “We wanted the space to be more modern, but not to the point it doesn’t make sense for the design and character of the house,” she says. “You want it to be updated, but not too trendy, something that still has that classic feel.” c vhomemaga zine .com 27

PROJECT: PRIMARY BATHROOM REFRESH WITH A VINTAGE FEEL
Kathy and Larry Potts built their Forest-area home in the early 2000s, and since that time have made changes as their style has evolved and the budget has allowed it. “When you are building an entire home at one time, you have to compromise on some things to stay within the overall budget,” says Kathy. The original primary bathroom had a jetted tub and one-piece shower insert. The first update Kathy did several years ago was to rip out the shower insert in favor of a tiled shower. “At that point, we kept the tub and put in a tile surround that matched the shower tile,” she notes. Kathy had noodled around with the idea of another update when she fell in love with an Art Deco-style porcelain tile in hues of gold, blue/green and beige at Lowe’s. She had to have it, and decided at that point she’d rip out the seldom-used jetted tub in favor of a clawfoot freestanding model, and would use the tile she loved on the floor. Kathy, who owns a local Decorating Den Interiors franchise, hired F&S Construction to execute the project, and she and her husband moved out of their en suite to a guest bedroom for the duration of construction, which began at the start of 2021. “We were going for a vintage look in the bathroom, something that feels like a cross between farmhouse and Victorian,” Kathy says. Beadboard trim, echoing the wall treatment in the kitchen, surrounds the new freestanding tub. Valances in a rose pattern lend a softness to a room with hard surfaces, and neutral light-gold walls and a blue/ green trim pick up the colors in the tile. Kathy still liked the vanity and it fit the new scheme, so she kept it, but changed out the existing chrome plumbing fixtures for oil-rubbed bronze. She had also intended to leave the shower, and only clean up the grout to make it shine. But as it happens in many renovations, things didn’t go according to plan.

“WE WERE GOING FOR A VINTAGE LOOK IN THE BATHROOM, SOMETHING THAT FEELS LIKE A CROSS BETWEEN FARMHOUSE AND VICTORIAN,” KATHY SAYS.
“When the tile guy got in there to clean up the grout, he realized that water had seeped between the grout lines, so there was water damage underneath, which made sense because we were always fighting mold in there,” says Kathy. “It turns out the tile wasn’t laid correctly, so we had to rip it out and put in a new shower.” A shower niche (a small recessed shelf) was added in the remodel, allowing a nook for shower toiletries. Pebble tile on the floor is neutral but interesting, and Kathy says it feels great underfoot. An accent strip of the floor tile runs along the back wall of the shower, and is surrounded by a neutral ceramic framing the rest of the shower walls. A new mirror over the vanity completes the refreshed space. “I love it ... when I walk in it makes me happy,” says Kathy. “To me it’s very warm and inviting.”

PHOTOS: TERA JANELLE DESIGN
PROJECT: BATHROOM RENOVATION IN 1950s HOME NODS TO ITS MIDCENTURY ROOTS
When husband and wife Paddy Fannon and Jessica McAuliffe purchased a ranch home in the Boonsboro area, they knew a primary bathroom renovation was on the to-do list. Within a year’s time they had enlisted designer Tera Janelle to rework the dated bathroom. “The shower was dark and claustrophobic, and though the room was still going to be small we needed more functional storage,” says Paddy. “We wanted something bright and more modern, but still comfortable.” Janelle designed a bathroom that took advantage of every square inch since the footprint couldn’t be expanded. “We employed several design tricks to visibly maximize the space in this bathroom,” she says. Some of those tricks were extra-large mirrored medicine cabinets to reflect light and create a more spacious feel, and replacing the current vanity with one that is wall mounted, revealing the floor tile underneath. “Seeing the floor tile under the vanity visually opens the space ... the custom vanity allowed us to fit the width of the area precisely, providing additional storage,” says Janelle. The previous shower was enclosed and cavelike, and the new shower has an open design with a niche that expands the entire back wall, providing ample storage for toiletries, and is highlighted with LED lighting, lending brightness to the room. As for the style inspiration, Janelle says Paddy and Jessica like a midcentury look but were also mindful of retaining a traditional flavor in keeping with the neighborhood. “We included both midcentury and traditional moments in this bath,” says Janelle. “The plumbing fixtures, as well as the wood tone and design of the vanity and mirrored medicine cabinets, feel decidedly midcentury, while the traditional tile selections keep things from leaning too far in one style direction or the other.”

As for tile, a 3x9-inch slate blue FireClay tile, handmade in California, is the unabashed star and runs the length of one wall, behind the vanity. It is softened by the gray-and-white-veined marble tile on the floor and the remainder of the shower walls. The blue tile had a long lead time, explains Janelle, and when it finally arrived, it was the first element to go up in the bathroom. “During installation the client was worried about the blue,” notes Janelle. “After the other elements in the room were installed, the blue tile was one of her favorite moments in the bath.” ✦ c vhomemaga zine .com 31
Historic Change In Ownership
Chris Tharp
Murrell Thornhill IV
Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory recently announced that Chris Tharp and Murrell W. Thornhill IV are now co-owners of the business. Both men got their start in the funeral business watching and helping their grandfathers, each of whom founded their own family funeral home. During times of grief, people are comforted by seeing someone they know and who has a personal understanding of the rituals of their faith and their community. –Chris Tharp
Chris and I are often asked how we do this – be around so much loss. We have a desire to serve. We are a caring and calm voice helping to guide the grieving as we assist them in making the necessary arrangements to honor and celebrate their loved ones. –Murrell Thornhill IV 3 2
Central Virginia HOME Fall 2021
A Segregated Past When Glenn W. Tharp, a white man, returned from serving in World War II, he resumed the career he’d started in 1937 as a funeral director at M.P. Carder Funeral Home in downtown Bedford. In 1960, Glenn and his wife Sadie Jane purchased the funeral home from the previous owner and started the Tharp family’s legacy in funeral service. In 1946, M.W. “Teedy” Thornhill, Jr., a Black man, purchased Strange & Higginbotham Funeral Home where he had worked after graduating from Eckels College of Embalming. Located in the then-robust Black business and cultural center along 5th Street in Lynchburg, he started the Thornhill legacy in funeral service by naming his business “Community Funeral Home” because he wanted to offer a place for everyone in the community. To give Blacks a place to be buried, Thornhill purchased Forest Hill Cemetery with Mr. Charlie Elliot. He later sold his share to his sister, Yvonne, who was instrumental in his endeavors, and her husband Lawrence Ferguson. Thornhill was followed into the funeral profession by his son and grandchildren, including Murrell W. Thornhill IV. Thornhill, Jr’s lifetime of service in Lynchburg included serving on the City Council for over a decade and being elected Lynchburg’s first Black mayor in 1990. Glenn’s son, Willard D. “Skip” Tharp, joined his family’s business in 1972, and followed a similar path in Bedford serving on the City Council for over 20 years and eventually being elected for multiple terms as mayor. Two families, separated by miles on the map and a history of racial segregation in the funeral industry, were living parallel lives: serving the funeral needs of their neighbors and working to improve their communities as dedicated civil servants.
A Future Filled with Purpose and Promise Over time, second generation leader, Skip Tharp, opened a new funeral home in Lynchburg in 1995 which included Lynchburg’s first crematory. In 2000, Chris Tharp, the 3rd generation to enter funeral service, joined the company. Chris continued the business’ growth, opening new locations to assist the communities of Madison Heights, Smith Mountain Lake, and Roanoke. Tharp’s focus in recent years has been recruiting and developing a more diverse team of qualified and experienced professionals so
My grandfather cared about and wanted to help everyone. I always wanted to be a funeral director just like him. –Thornhill IV
that their funeral directors looked more like and had a deeper, more personal understanding of the entire communities they served. Around the same time, Murrell W. Thornhill IV, pictured above with his grandfather and great aunt, Mrs. Yvonne Thornhill Ferguson, realized that to fulfill his vision for service and professional growth, he would have to leave the company his family started generations ago. Murrell’s personal integrity and excellence as a funeral director were well known to all area funeral directors and several tried to hire him. In 2015, Murrell chose to join Tharp – uniting two family legacies that had been parallel forces in their communities for generations. Thanks to his hard work and exceptional ability to connect with client families as well as coworkers, Murrell quickly moved up in the company from funeral director to location manager and in 2021, Thornhill and Tharp became co-owners. This historic union of two third-generation family funeral professionals, one Black and one white, bridges a centuries-old divide between segregated funeral homes. After a decade of intentional and thoughtful growth, Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory is now the most often-selected funeral home in the region and is the recipient of numerous community-based awards including the Chamber of Commerce’s Small Business of the Year, and The Alliance for Families and Children’s Family-Friendly Business of the Year.

BACK TO BROWN
INCORPORATING CLASSIC WOOD FURNISHINGS WITH MODERN STYLE BY AMELIA POORE We all have something. Maybe you couldn’t help it: Grandpa really wanted you to use his partner desk; Mom insisted that you take the mahogany highboy. Maybe the rocking chair drew you in with the words vintage, antique and heirloom. Maybe the credenza was simply the right price at a yard sale. Whatever the reason, we all have a big piece of brown furniture. Recent trends have shied away from the dark, heavy drama of classic wood furniture in favor of lighter wood or paint, but now, brown is back, and trust us: It won’t weigh down your space.

Central Virginia HOME Fall 2021
BROWN FURNITURE ENCOMPASSES MANY STYLES, SIZES, TYPES AND FINISHES, MAKING THE PROCESS OF INCORPORATING A PIECE INTO YOUR SPACE A SMOOTH ONE. THE INFUSION OF WARMTH AND HOMINESS BROWN FURNITURE BRINGS WILL WORK JUST ABOUT ANYWHERE. Designers generally use the term “brown furniture” for pieces made of solid dark wood, such as walnut, teak or mahogany. For the past twenty-ish years, interiors have been dominated by lighter finishes. Designers have avoided brown furniture in an ongoing effort to open up spaces and emulate a modern, minimalist style. Thus, using a big, dark statement piece has become a bit daunting. But when we look at history, brown furniture has never adhered to trends; it’s truly timeless, popping up in Victorian England, Midcentury America, and Ming Dynasty-Era China (lasting approximately from the 14th to the 17th centuries). The reason for its timelessness is that highquality wood furniture is often made of solid hardwood, making it built to last and retain its value, adding the always-important sustainability aspect that resonates with so many of us. If you’ve been leaning into light and airy finishes, you may be worried that adding brown furniture, no matter how gorgeous, simply won’t work with the aesthetic of your home. However, brown furniture encompasses many styles, sizes, types and finishes, making the process of incorporating a piece into your space a smooth one. The infusion of warmth and hominess brown furniture brings will work just about anywhere. When it comes to the type of furniture, remember that just because a piece was designed for a specific purpose doesn’t mean you have to use it for that purpose only. A quality piece of furniture can be used in a variety of ways: a writing desk as
a bar console, an armoire as an entertainment center, even a pie cabinet as a linen closet in the bathroom. When it comes to selecting the right furniture for your space, think creatively about repurposing a piece that meets the size, style and finish you want. After determining the appropriate piece for your space, consider the overall style and size of the room. When incorporating brown furniture, the most important factors to consider are wall length and ceiling height. One of the mostcited aversions to dark furniture is the fear of becoming the “crowded Grandma’s house.” This phenomenon arose as the population of the United States grew rapidly in the second half of the 20th century, necessitating more houses, quickly, for less money. Paired with the advent of air conditioning and climate control, the result was an abundance of homes with more small rooms and significantly lower ceilings than had historically been built, rendering Grandma’s classic dark furniture much more domineering in the new smaller spaces. Designers overcome this problem by first determining which wall can “afford” such a bold statement. Especially in rooms with ceilings under 8 feet, placing a highboy dresser or hutch in front of a too-short wall makes the room feel smaller right away. If the piece is tall, placing it along a long wall will help balance out the space and won’t crowd the room. Another option is selecting a smaller piece, such as a sideboard or chest of drawers.

If your space is mostly lighter finishes, adding a darker piece is going to make a statement regardless of what it is or where you put it. With that in mind, you have some wiggle room to be creative with the style and type of furniture you choose. However, keep in mind the big risk with brown furniture: its weight. Balancing your space is important in any design decision, but especially in adding a sizeable piece that could overwhelm the room quickly. If you already have an eclectic style or a generally more maximalist vibe, consider starting with a dark mid-size piece with clean lines to make a bold statement without dominating the room. If your aesthetic is more minimal, you can play around a bit more with the size and style without overwhelming your space, but be sure that the piece actually makes sense with the rest of the room. For example, if you’re looking to add a dark table into a mostly-white classic kitchen, perhaps consider a classic and simple design, such as Shaker, Arts and Crafts, or even a neoclassical Sheraton-style table. If your kitchen is more modern, you might consider a table that reflects the midcentury modern or Art Nouveau style. Brown Central Virginia HOME Fall 2021
furniture by nature brings history with it, so use it to your advantage to add depth and variety to your space. When it comes to finishes, brown furniture runs the gamut: dark to reddish brown, matte to shiny, monochrome to a whole (brown) rainbow. Lean into this variety by not trying to make all your pieces the same finish. Let your furniture be sisters, not twins! Having variety adds a layer of texture to your space, increasing interest and depth. A good way to conceptualize mixing finishes is thinking about the wall color in your space. If two finishes look great next to the wall color, then they will likely look great together. Additionally, mixing unique finishes with more classic ones is a great way to add interest without putting too much effort into matching all your furniture. For example, putting a burlwood coffee table in the living room with dark walnut end tables looks curated and cool without being too far out there to be classy. Overall, you really can’t go wrong with brown furniture. It’s classic, natural, beautiful, and there is absolutely something for everyone. Basing your design decisions on the size, style and finish will help you select pieces that work in your space without overwhelming or weighing it down. Brown furniture is back, but in reality, it never really left. ✦

LIVE party food
the art of crostini
MAKE YOUR NEXT PARTY A MASTERPIECE BY SAR AH NICHOL A S
With the air turning crisper comes the intoxicating idea of holiday parties, putting many of us in partyplanning mode. Creating an inventive and beautiful menu can be daunting; the internet is flooded with recipes that look gorgeous in Instagram photos, but often fail the flavor test. But I got you! You will not have a “Pinterest fail” with these recipes.
38
Central Virginia HOME Fall 2021
We all want the perfect party, but it does not have to be overly complicated. I venture to say that many can remember their parents’ parties, where kiddos were sent to play quietly while the adults reveled in “fancy” things long into the night. I remember sneaking smells and swipes of food while dreaming of the day when I could host my own fancy party. These are not your mother’s cocktail wienies on toothpicks. This is table art that will delight your guests’ eyes and make their tastebuds dance. Crostini are perfect party food—gorgeous, easy and beyond delicious.
THE PERFECT CROSTINI
Start the “canvas” with this recipe. Adjust for how many guests you are feeding and top with endless possibilities! 1 baguette (about 10 ounces, about 50 to 60 slices) ¾ cup extra-virgin olive oil Coarse kosher salt and freshly ground pepper Preheat oven to 350. Slice baguette ¼ to ½-inch thick crosswise and on a slight bias. Arrange on two large baking sheets and brush both sides with oil. Season with salt and pepper. Bake until crispy and lightly golden, rotating sheets halfway through, 15 to 20 minutes. Top crostini with desired toppings. If not using immediately, store at room temperature for up to 1 week in a resealable bag or container.
MANCHEGO, CRANBERRY “BUTTER” AND ARUGULA CROSTINI
Manchego is a classic sheep’s milk cheese originating from Spain. It is salty, buttery, and tastes amazing with the sweet tartness of cranberry. Top with peppery arugula and you have hit all the right strokes. ½ baguette (30 slices, prepped per recipe) 1 cup cranberries, frozen 1 cup brown sugar 1 jalapeno, seeded and finely diced 1 cinnamon stick ⅛ cup water 30 slices of manchego, about ¼-inch thick 2 cups loosely packed arugula TO MAKE CRANBERRY BUTTER: Place cranberries, brown sugar, jalapeno, cinnamon and water in a heavy-bottom saucepan. Cook on medium until the cranberries thaw and start to pop, about 10 to 15 minutes. Stir frequently. Remove from heat and discard the cinnamon stick. Blend the mixture with an immersion blender or food processor. Return to the
stovetop and heat on medium until thickened, about 10 minutes. Stir frequently. If not using immediately, transfer to sterile jars and cool. Store in refrigerator until ready to enjoy. Once opened, leftovers can be kept up to 1 month in the refrigerator. Unopened leftovers can be refrigerated up to 1 year. TO ASSEMBLE CROSTINI: Place a dollop of cranberry butter on each baguette slice and top with manchego. Garnish with arugula.
MUSHROOM AND SHALLOT DUXELLES WITH SHAVED PARMESAN CROSTINI
With a classic French duxelles, nothing can go wrong. Duxelles is a French word for sautéed mushrooms and shallots, and often, additional garlic and parsley. It works great as a base for a sauce (just add cream) and in stuffings. This duxelles recipe is earthy and slightly nutty, and when combined with the sharp saltiness of good parmesan, it’s a masterpiece on a crostini. ½ baguette (30 slices, prepped per recipe) 8 ounces button mushrooms 2 tablespoons butter, divided ¼ cup shallot, finely chopped 2 teaspoons dried thyme Kosher salt and ground black pepper, to taste ¼ cup sherry 4 ounces of parmesan, shaved Finely chopped chives for garnish TO MAKE DUXELLES: Finely chop mushrooms in a food processor. Transfer mushrooms into an extra-fine cheesecloth or flour sack towel. Wring extra moisture out of mushrooms. Heat a large skillet to medium and add half of the butter to coat the bottom of the pan. Add mushrooms, shallots and thyme, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Cook until the moisture is gone, and mushrooms start to brown, stirring frequently, about 5 to 7 minutes. Stir in remaining butter

and sherry. Cook for another few minutes to cook out the alcohol, and season if needed. TO ASSEMBLE: Place a dollop of duxelles on the prepped baguette and top with shaved parmesan. Repeat on all baguette slices. Drizzle a small amount of olive oil and sprinkle chives on top.
THYME-ROASTED GRAPES WITH RICOTTA, HONEY AND PINE NUTS CROSTINI
My go-to is always roasted grapes! They are beautiful, flavorful, and complex yet simple. The creaminess of whole milk ricotta and buttery pine nuts will make everyone sing your praises. ½ baguette (30 slices, prepped per recipe) 1 pound seedless red grapes, no stems 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar (as aged as you can find!) 1 tablespoon fresh thyme, chopped 2 tablespoons olive oil Kosher salt and ground pepper 1 cup whole milk ricotta 3 tablespoons pine nuts, toasted Honey to drizzle TO PREPARE GRAPES: Preheat oven to 400. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a large bowl, toss grapes, vinegar, thyme and olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. Roast, stirring occasionally until the grapes soften and start to pop, about 15 minutes. TO ASSEMBLE: Place a dollop of ricotta onto each toast. Spoon warm grapes on top. Sprinkle with pine nuts and drizzle with honey. ✦

FEATHER YOUR NEST WITH FUN, FLUFFY PILLOWS
C
BY R O RY R H O D ES Cooler days and the bright colors of autumn are on their way. The change of season can awaken an instinct to revert to our den-making, nest-lining, burrow-building roots by spiffing up our homes for the cooler days ahead. We might organize the pantry or linen cupboards. Dust away those late-season cobwebs that appear in corners and porches overnight. Repurpose a room whose occupant has flown the nest. Maybe you’re ready to tackle a big project before the holiday season. Or maybe you just want something fun and easy to freshen things up. In that case, pillows are one of the best ways to quickly “cozify” a space. It’s a small change that can have a big impact on your furniture and your room. The four “F”s—fabric, finishes, fill and form—are all important considerations when looking for the right fit. Knowing your options will ensure you get the look you want.
c vhomemaga zine .com 4 5
Fabric
Throw pillows are the perfect place to have fun with fabric. Wool is a sturdy fiber that is used in a range of finishes, from raw, nubbly weaves, to chunky cable knit, to fine needlepoint. Velvet and chenille offer lush looks and cuddly feels that add richness to a space. Washable cotton and linen provide casual comfort and are perfect for busy areas. When choosing a fabric, think about how you’ll be using it. Crewel is gorgeous, but might not be the right fit for nap time on the den sofa. Finishes

Edges, trim and closures all affect a pillow’s style and intended function. A knife edge is a simple seam which produces crisp edges and corners, well-suited to the tailored looks that you might find on a sofa or club chair. Welted is similar to a knife edge, but the seam is finished with piping or braiding. It’s also a tailored look, but the added visual interest of contrasting piping can make it more of a focal point in decor. A flange edge has a strip of fabric surrounding the seam, generally a couple of inches wide. It’s often seen on bed shams, where it adds an elegant finish. Scallop edges are a feminine variation on the flange, often paired with matelassé fabric. Scallop-edge matelassé shams provide subtle texture and a classic, welcoming look in a bedroom.

Box edges give pillows a square shape. They are usually seen in seat and back cushions, but are also used for floor pillows and certain bed pillow styles. In addition to piping and flange edges, fringe, tassels and pompoms can take plain pillows to the next level. Using a contrasting material, such as natural fiber, metallic thread, or leather or suede cording, adds a custom look, though it can limit your cleaning options. An envelope closure, which features two overlapping flaps of fabric, is used for bed shams and some throw pillows. It’s easy to remove for cleaning, and works best on light- to mid-weight fabrics. Since this type of pillow is not reversible, it can be an opportunity to showcase a potentially limited or costly fabric. Envelope closures are sometimes finished with buttons or fabric ties for decoration. Medium- to heavyweight pillow fabrics might have a zipper closure, either along the back or hidden in the bottom seam, which allows both sides of the pillow to be used.

Down fill is the gold standard for pillows. This soft underlayer of bird feathers (generally goose, but sometimes duck or swan) makes for plump, lightweight, lofty pillows. Hungarian goose down, which features large pure-white clusters, is considered to be the finest down variety. When shopping for down pillows, pay attention to fill power. The higher the fill power, the larger the down cluster, which means more loft. Fill power ranges from about 550 to over 800 for high-quality goose down. Down/feather blends are a more affordable, medium-weight option. They tend to hold their shape longer than pure down, but feather quills can poke through thin fabrics over time, so don’t use feathers in a sleeping pillow. Look for the ratio of feathers to down—75/25 is going to be softer and more expensive than 95/5. Down alternative fill is made from polyester microfibers—not to be confused with the “polyfill” found in stiff, inexpensive pillows, which soon breaks down and looks lumpy. Down alternative pillows are described as having a “silkier” feel compared to the airiness of pure down and the “scrunchiness” of down/feather blends. Central Virginia HOME Fall 2021
When choosing an insert for a pillow cover, the insert should be one or two inches larger than the cover, so that the finished effect is firm instead of floppy. This can be a bit tricky though; some inserts which say “20 by 20” may actually already be sized up and referring to the intended cover instead of the actual pillow dimensions. Read any label or description carefully before purchasing. Form
Square throw pillows used on sofas and chairs might be anywhere from 16 by 16 to 24 by 24 inches. On a sofa, square pillows work well as a stand-alone pair, or as a base behind smaller round or rectangular pillows. Standard lumbar pillows are about 14 by 22 inches, but can run much larger. The standard size works well as an accent in a pillow grouping, whereas a large lumbar is meant to be a statement piece centered on a sofa, large chair, or bed. Round pillows, often tufted and smocked, have been making a comeback, particularly in velvet and boho fabrics. They’re fun in a pillow grouping, and look especially good on an accent chair. If using a single pillow on a chair, or a pair of pillows on a sofa, make a statement. A

high-impact style or pattern will add much more value than a plain neutral in this instance. When grouping throw pillows, go for a mix of scale and pattern. For example, a large square pillow, smaller square, and lumbar might feature one textured solid, one small-scale pattern, and one large-scale pattern. You might visually tie them all together by color, making sure that the solid pillow picks up an accent shade in one of the prints. Floor pillows are useful for extra seating while reading, meditating, watching movies and playing games. They’re also good for picnics and lawn parties, and for building a pillow fort! They are typically large and firm, often with a box edge for extra support, and can be covered in anything from chenille to exotic embroidery to antique rug textiles. If you have a window bench in a breakfast nook, bedroom or library, maximize its charm with proper pillows. A two- to four-inch, box-edge seat pillow topped with several throw pillows for back support will make your alcove an appealing feature. For a well-dressed bed, use Euro and bolster pillows for decorative effect. Euros are large square pillows (about 26 by 26 inches) often topped with shams. A cylindrical bolster is a lumbar pillow’s more formal, traditional cousin. Place Euros up against the headboard—one on a twin bed, two on
Central Virginia HOME Fall 2021
a full or queen, and three on a king—then add your standard bed pillows, and finish with decorative pillows in different shapes and sizes. A bolster is placed front and center in the arrangement. Custom pillows
Perhaps you can’t find the pillow you’re envisioning, or you’ve found a beautiful fabric sample at a store, or you want to repurpose an antique fabric into a pillow. An interior designer can help you with a pillow project, sourcing specialty fabrics and product lines. They also offer the added advantage of their style expertise and fabric knowledge. If you already know exactly what you want but aren’t a seamstress, you can find one either locally or online. Local upholstery shops and fabric shops may have someone on site or can give you a referral. Tailors, clothing alteration services, and even dry cleaners are also possible sources. What’s in style
Design insiders think that bright fabrics and bold prints will influence post-pandemic decor trends, as people who’ve spent months at home feel the urge to splash out on easy, cheerful updates. Animal prints, particularly jungle animals, are popular, as are “grandmillennial” chinoiserie florals. Retro color block motifs, sometimes in contrasting fabrics, are also a hit. Antique, hand-printed, and hand-knotted global textiles can make one-of-a-kind pillows. Think mudcloth from Mali, batik from Indonesia, ikat from India, Mexican otomi cloth, or Turkish kilims. Etsy is a terrific online marketplace for textiles; you can even source vintage scarves and saris for fabrics. Also look for fair trade-certified shops, which offer living wages, safer working conditions, and ethically sourced materials for the small-scale tradespeople whose products they sell. Some artists and designers are featuring their graphic prints on home decor items like throw pillows. They may have their own website, or sell through Etsy and other online boutiques. This fall, get your home in fine feather with custom pillows. It’s an easy, gratifying way to make a seasonal update in your home’s spaces. On a sofa or an accent chair, in a window nook or in the bedroom, pillows are a low-stress, low-commitment update that allows you to have fun mixing shapes, sizes, and patterns. ✦ PHOTOS TASHA TOLLIVER COMPLIMENTS OF PALETTE/DANDRIDGE ART

he fireplace has always been a symbol of home and family in America, not only serving as a source of heat, but also a place to prepare food, read, play games and engage in lively conversation. Mantel masterpiece
Perhaps the first thing you notice when you look at your fireplace is the mantel—or lack of one. Altering the existing mantel can drastically change the look and feel of your room. If you have a stained wooden mantel, give it a fresh coat of paint. White is an instinctive choice because it will immediately brighten up the room. However, black is a dramatic choice that makes a statement. Blues and grays are increasingly on trend, and will add to the calm and cozy feeling you get from the fireplace itself. Adding decorative wooden corbels or metal brackets is another way to change your mantel. If you wish to replace the entire mantel, choose one that fits with the other design elements in your room. Use a thick reclaimed wooden beam for a rustic feel, or an antique architectural mantel from a local salvage shop if your style is vintage. A sleek, floating mantel inspires a modern aesthetic, while mixing wood and metal complements the everpopular modern farmhouse look. Paint + primer = perfection
A brick fireplace can be a beautiful focal point in a room; however, many homes have dark red or brown brick that is outdated and dreary. While replacing the mantel is a start, the brick behind it may need some attention too. Luckily, painting a brick fireplace is relatively inexpensive and easy.
Use a wire bush to remove any dirt or loose mortar, and vacuum the area to clear away debris. Fill any holes or cracks in the mortar or bricks with fireplace mortar. Use a degreaser to clean the bricks. Leftover residue from previous fires won’t allow the paint or primer to bind properly. Make sure the entire surface is completely dry before you begin to paint. Use a good quality synthetic brush that can stand up to the rough surface of the brick. If you need to use a roller, use one with a high nap, at least one-half inch or more, for optimal coverage. Primer specific for brick or masonry is a must; it’s thinner than ordinary primer and will soak into the brick, allowing the paint to stick better. Either latex or oil-based paint is fine for fireplace brick, but make sure that your primer matches your paint. If you use latex paint, you must use latex primer, and if you use oil-based paint, you must use an oil-based primer. Nothing detracts more from a fireplace than a dirty, sooty firebox. While you have the paint brushes out, go ahead and paint that too. You may need to remove any creosote, or tar, given off from burning wood that may have built up inside the firebox, and you must use paint that is heat resistant up to 1200 degrees. Ample ventilation is also needed; wear a mask and be sure to open windows or doors for good airflow in the room while painting. Plan on applying two coats of paint and allow plenty of time for drying. Black is an obvious

choice for a firebox, especially if your fireplace is wood burning, but don’t be afraid to try dark grey, blueish black or off black. Just a hint of a different color can add an elegance to the room. And if your fireplace is simply decorative, the possibilities are endless when it comes to color choice for the firebox. Fireplace focal point
The fireplace surround, the area framing your firebox, is another area where updates can make a big impact. Tile or stone is a natural choice due to its durability and heat resistance. There are many different styles of tile to choose from, including handmade artisanal tile, architectural tile that adds dimension and texture, or rustic tile resembling wood. Experts also recommend using this area to add a splash of color, which then can be used throughout the entire room to tie all of your design elements together.

If building a fire feels like a chore, it may be time to convert your fireplace to gas. There are two main options: vented logs or a fireplace insert. Both require inspection of the fireplace and chimney to make sure they are in good working order. A certified technician must install the gas line, and an experienced professional is recommended for installation of the insert. Vented gas logs create exhaust similar to burning real wood, thus the damper must be open when in use. Although heat escapes through the damper, vented logs look realistic, have a large flame, and do not produce odor during use. A fireplace insert is a Central Virginia HOME Fall 2021
box with glass doors that houses gas logs and fits into the fireplace. It is a sealed unit that draws air from and vents to the outside, pushing exhaust and moisture up the flue. There is no loss of heat, which makes an insert more efficient than vented logs; however they can give off an odor of natural gas. Both are excellent choices and provide ample heat with little effort after installation. If you aren’t ready to give up your wood-burning fireplace, a third option is to install a fireplace log lighter. Also called a gas-assist fireplace, it’s a small pipe that emits natural gas through tiny holes, which then is lit and gets the fire going. Once the fire is to your liking, you simply turn it off. It’s an easy way to keep your real wood fireplace without all the hassle that comes with starting a fire yourself. Updating your fireplace can be a large project with lots of demolition, or an easy project involving a little bit of paint. Either direction can take an antiquated, outof-style hearth to a newly minted area of your home where time is well spent and memories made for years to come. ✦

HOUSEWARMING GIFT IDEAS IN A HOT HOUSING MARKET B Y M A R G I E L I P PA R D
I
n today’s sizzling housing market where home buyers face fierce bidding competitions and surging home prices, housewarming gifts take on special significance. They not only congratulate and welcome new homeowners but deliver much-needed TLC after navigating a hot housing market. Housewarming gifts convey well wishes and fete new beginnings, and the best marry the personal with the practical, the stylish with the useful. Whether you know the new homeowners well or are just meeting them, housewarming gifts help make their house a cozy home. The term” housewarming” dates to 16th-century Europe and the tradition of warming a newly built house. The homeowner typically hosted a celebratory “thank you” meal for neighbors who helped raise the house. Guests brought gifts of firewood and laid fires in the hearths to heat the home and jettison any evil spirits c vhomemaga zine .com 57
Many early housewarming gifts served as talismans protecting the new home and its residents with salutary blessings. Gifts of bread carried the hope that the owner would never know hunger; salt signaled the wish for flavor to leaven life; olive oil represented the blessing of health and well-being; candles embodied good tidings for light and happiness; honey depicted the blessing of sweetness in life; and wine symbolized the wish that the owner would prosper and never thirst. Hosting housewarming parties is still a venerated tradition around the world. After unpacking and decorating, most new homeowners—and college students moving into a dorm room or retirees downsizing into a condo—are excited to share their new digs with family and friends. An intimate gathering over drinks and appetizers, a potluck dinner, or an informal “open house” are perfect occasions to unveil your new abode. Throw your housewarming party within six months to a year of your move-in date, so your celebration is a christening of your home. Great housewarming gift ideas embrace practicality and style. so personalize your gift accordingly. Whenever possible, buy locally to support neighboring businesses and introduce relocating homeowners to favorite shopping spots. Depending upon your budget, these eye-catching yet useful housewarming gift ideas will delight new homeowners. For the kitchen and bar
Kitchen gifts endear the chefs and bakers in a household. Consider affordable kitchen staples like colorful matching potholders, dish cloths and dish towels; sturdy stainless steel or bistro-style ceramic measuring cups and spoons; an artfully designed stoneware pitcher that doubles as a flower vase; and whimsical animalshaped salt and pepper shakers. Coveted culinary gifts for close friends and family include a state-of-the-art blender, a nest of high-end pots and pans, and a smart coffeemaker with a set of customized coffee mugs. A Bose clock radio will keep the kitchen humming while a potted plant adds a dash of fresh greenery. Entertaining and bar gifts are housewarming host favorites. A knife set with a cheese or charcuterie board—
monogrammed with the homeowner’s name and move-in date, state-shaped to show local pride, pineapple-shaped to depict gracious hospitality, or simply a handsomely shaped block of wood—is perfect for the housewarming party and the hosts’ future entertaining needs. Gifts of monogrammed wine glasses, cocktail tumblers, and coasters will impress your host while a bar toolset or mounted wall wine rack will thrill the bartender in the house. For living areas and baths
Customized line-drawn and watercolor framed portraits are ideal to display in living rooms, family rooms and bedrooms. Upload a photo of the new house, a family member, or a pet to an online digital arts vendor (Minted, for example) who creates the line drawing or watercolor, formats the portrait on paper of your choosing, and custom frames it. Apply the same portrait to stationery, calendars or napkins for a distinctive personal gift. A custom return address stamp makes handwriting notes a breeze. and gold-rimmed frames create a relaxing yet elegant ambiance. Perfect for display, a handsome coffee table book is not only a thoughtful personal gift, but a beautiful accent piece. For the guest bathroom, plushy monogrammed washcloths and towels and scented soap help exude spalike luxuriance. Aromatic diffusers and candles, soothing bath bombs, colorful soap rocks, hand and body lotions, and hand towels are affordable and attractive bathroom gifts. For the outdoors
Consider a gift of a monogrammed doormat to welcome guests to the new home. Foster adventurous forays into outdoor entertaining and gardening with a barbecue toolset, a gardening caddy toolset, and gloves. Wind chimes, bird feeders, bird baths and garden
statuary will enchant the new homeowners as they enjoy their outdoor space. Homemade/locally made gifts
Early housewarming gifts— whether bread, honey, candles or firewood—were homemade. Today, gift baskets of homemade and locally baked items still represent a cornucopia of heartfelt well-wishes. Cheese straws, muffins, bread, honey, and vinaigrette are great candidates for a gift basket bestowing the blessing that the new home owners will thrive in their new home. Whether locally purchased or homemade, a housewarming gift extends a genuine gesture of friendship and serves as a refreshing tonic to the stress of snatching a home in a smoking-hot seller’s market. ✦

IMPROVE home allergens
THE INSIDE SCOOP ON
ALLERGIES
BREATHE EASIER AT HOME BY MITZI BIBLE The crisp fall air is a welcome sign to many of us, especially allergy sufferers who are ready for those pesky summer pollen makers to wind down production. But as the temperatures begin their descent and we spend less time outdoors, the itchy eyes, sneezing, and stuffy noses could persist because of the allergens inside our own homes. Sticking to a consistent cleaning routine and altering your living spaces could help in the fight against year-round indoor allergies.
6 0
Central Virginia HOME Fall 2021
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Americans, on average, spend as much as 90 percent of their time indoors. While we may not be able to control every indoor environment, we can certainly make an effort in our homes. We can start by reducing triggers from the most bothersome inside pollutants: house dust, dust mites, mold, and of course those lovable creatures that we choose to live with—our pets. Start in the bedroom
If you or one of your family members have common allergy symptoms after staying indoors for many hours, the best place to start surveying and making changes is the bedroom, where we spend most of our time. If the results are effective there, then you can begin to implement the same measures throughout the rest of your home. Have you ever thought about what’s in household dust? It’s a concoction of soil particles, clothing, carpet and furniture fibers, hair, pollen, pet dander (bits of fur and skin), insect parts, and our own dead skin cells. So it’s no wonder that it’s at top of the list and can make us sick. Of course, the answer is dusting. It’s a neverending chore even for the neat freaks among us, but there are strategies that work. The first is to decrease surface area: downsize and clear the clutter. The least amount of furniture in your bedroom, the
better. Cut down on knick-knacks, wall hangings and stuffed animals. Use window treatments that can be wiped down or frequently washed. Use a microfiber cloth or damp cloth to remove the dust, not just move it around. Cease using an overhead fan, which can keep stirring up dust and move it to places that are harder to see. Another reason to tackle the bedroom first is because it is a favorite place for dust mites. According to CDC, most mites are found in bedding, where they spend up to a third of their lives. A typical mattress could harbor 100,000 to 10 million of these microscopic critters. They especially like to nest near humans because their food source is dead skin cells. Just thinking about sharing a bed with millions of bugs makes us uncomfortable enough, but if your body is sensitive to these mites (it’s actually their waste that triggers allergies), you may develop physical symptoms that will make you even more miserable while you sleep. Reduce these unwanted houseguests by using allergen-proof, wipeable covers for mattresses, box springs and pillows. Wash sheets and pillowcases in hot water at least once a week and consider changing from wool to nylon or cotton cellulose blankets. Vacuuming once a week, with a high-quality HEPA filter attached, can help. Don’t forget baseboards, molding and windowsills. It’s a good idea to wear an N95 filter mask while you vacuum.

Focus on air quality
Dust mites can survive only in humid environments since they absorb moisture from the air. So focusing on air quality and proper humidity levels can also keep the population down. Carpet can trap moisture, and consequently more dust mites, which is why carpet may not be best for allergy sufferers (especially in areas with more moisture, such as the bathroom or basement). Using an air conditioner or dehumidifier can help keep humidity levels low, recommended between 30 and 50 percent. High humidity is also a lead cause of mold. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America suggests reducing mold in your bedroom by checking windows for condensation and improving air flow by leaving interior doors open. Reduce mold in your bathroom and kitchen by using exhaust fans and regularly scouring sinks and tubs. Promote good air circulation in your laundry area, too, and never leave damp clothes lying around. While houseplants are thought to be good for our environment, they can also grow mold. Reducing the number of houseplants and not overwatering can help. Allergens just seem determined to exist among us, whether outside or in. But when the outside comes in, that exacerbates the problem. Fall is the season for ragweed, thistle, goldenrod, and other weed pollens that can last until the first frost. The dry seasonal wind can often make these airborne allergens worse. Keep them outside where they belong by closing windows and applying caulk to gaps. If you know you have seasonal allergies and have been outside for a long time, change your clothes when you get home and wash them the same day so the pollen doesn’t have time to stick around inside.

Strategies for pet allergens
Most of us consider pets our family members and they spend just as much time indoors as we do. But their saliva and dander can trigger allergies, especially as the weather gets colder and they are inside more. Bathing pets weekly can help reduce their dander as well as any outside allergens they may carry inside. Allergists agree that avoidance is key with animal allergies, but most of us just can’t part with them for that long after they’ve already won our hearts. If your allergies persist, you can try keeping them out of your bedroom for at least some relief while you sleep. Washing your hands frequently with soap and water and vacuuming more often can also alleviate allergy symptoms triggered by pets. As much as we don’t want to think about spending more time housecleaning, just knowing that the irritants that can keep us awake coughing, sneezing, and reaching for the Kleenex are often hidden from sight can motivate us to be more aggressive in keeping indoor allergens OUT of the picture. ✦

DESIGN coffee tables
COFFEE TABLE
STYLE Photography by Michael Patch
T
he coffee table is often the unsung hero of any seating arrangement. Not only does it anchor the space, providing a focal point around which to gather the sofa and chairs, but practically speaking, it provides a surface for necessary items like drinks, books and remote controls. Here, take a page from six area designers about how to style your coffee table for both function and good looks.
SEASONAL ABUNDANCE
Ashley Hilbish and Mady Greer of Curtains, Blinds and Bath create a look that’s both seasonal and timeless, with a mix of glam and rustic elements. Pumpkins nestled in black duster pans hint that fall is in the air, while a stack of design books provides both visual weight and height for the color-blocked vase holding lagrus grass. “We love a touch of black on this light, glass table,” says Greer, noting that some clients shy from incorporating black until they realize the rich depth it provides to any look. A brass bowl holds an artificial fern for that lively touch of green. “We love an overstyled coffee table; we find that overstyling creates a vibrant and designer effect, but don’t forget to leave room to be practical and actually use the table,” says Greer.

Central Virginia HOME Fall 2021
GO FOR GREEN AND GOLD
Kathy Potts of Decorating Den Interiors designed this look around on-trend green and honey tones. Metallic and glass orbs and squash hint at the season and provide contrasting textures, while the large boxwood orb stands solo in a textured bowl. “We love using evergreen plants like boxwood when decorating because they can be used all year long, keeping a liveliness to the home,” says Potts. “Combining this greenery with metallics is perfect for autumn, as it bridges the freshness of summer and the festivities of the holiday season.” Potts also says to keep sight lines in mind when styling a coffee table. Since this hard-working piece is central in a conversational seating area or in front of a television, it’s important to incorporate lowlying accessories like books, plants, decorative coasters or shallow bowls.
COLLECTIONS TAKE CENTER STAGE
Troy Deacon of High Cotton Fine Home Furnishings and Gifts uses a collection of lacquer tortoise boxes in varying sizes and shapes as a backdrop for a menagerie of interesting brass animal figures in this pretty but practical arrangement. Decorative boxes provide the perfect place to stash the remote, reading glasses and spare cocktail napkins. Greenery spilling from one of the boxes is an unexpected note of color in an otherwise neutral look. Clustering the collection at the center as well as on the table’s bottom shelf allows plenty of room for drinks, snacks and the latest read.
c vhomemaga zine .com 65
CLASSIC COLORS
Lia Melder of Reid’s Fine Furnishings uses classic blues and greens to create a look that’s “put together without being cluttered,” she explains. The game of tic-tac-toe is elevated in this crystal rendition; blue and white jars provide height and interest while vases in varying shades of blue hold fresh greenery. Melder stacked design books on the lower level of the table. “I kept the items on top off to one side so there is plenty of usable space,” she says. “I offset that with books and small pots on the bottom shelf.”
FUNCTION MEETS BEAUTY
Sarah Girten of Sarah Girten Interiors says she loves incorporating a tray in coffee table designs. Here, the tray adds a vibrant pop of green while providing the perfect place for a favorite glass of wine. “I am a believer of function and beauty, which is why this coffee table set up is simple,” says Girten. A small stack of coffee table books topped a round cheetahglass vase and fresh fall flowers finish the look with texture and height.

PLUSH PUMPKIN PERFECTION
Jackie Barringer of Portobello Road captures her love of pumpkins by using interior-friendly velvet pumpkins for this fall table display. “Velvet pumpkins have such an elegant, warm patina, and make a room feel cozy too,” she says. “They pick up the feeling/color of the changing leaves outside. Add a fire in the fireplace, family, and of course food, and you’ve got a perfect afternoon.” An old barrel lid, glass cloche and vintage ceramic deer keep things interesting on the table’s surface while an old commercial thread drawer on the bottom shelf holds fall flowers. “The table's mirror definitely adds a finishing touch to the display,” Barringer says. ✦

The Vinyl Porch Rail Company is a locally owned and operated business that has specialized in creating custom railing and fencing since 1996. In 2019, the company expanded to include DoorTek, which provides garage door installations and maintenance. Both companies are dedicated to meeting client needs by using the highest quality materials and being able to find creative solutions for every job. Owner Jason Nuckols entered the business as a dealer for vinyl railing and fencing almost 25 years ago, but, through the years, added equipment to fabricate the materials. Now, the company can create any materials needed to make sure that any job is the best it can be. “We can recreate most any job and it gives us a lot of flex,” Nuckols says. “We have pretty much anything and everything and, if we don’t have it, we will make it.” In the midst of the pandemic, Vinyl Porch Rail Company and DoorTek experienced challenges such as cost increases, material shortages and a high demand for services. Nuckols says that he saw a network of small businesses working together to make it through and that everybody wanted everybody to succeed. “I did see a lot of, what would theoretically be, competitors work together,” Nuckols says. “It was heartwarming to see that comradery come into play. Despite facing struggles amid the coronavirus pandemic, Hook says that they are confident they are here to stay and will continue to put their customers’ projects and needs above all. “We love being able to meet our clients’ goals and, in the end, make sure that they are happy with what they have received,” Hook says. “We are here for our clients and their projects, whether it be small or large. We will figure out a way to fit them in and we really appreciate our customers and their business.” Central Virginia HOME Fall 2021

Having a true passion and dedication to her clients, Realtor Nadine Blakely has enjoyed serving the Lynchburg community for the past 15 years. Blakely focuses on going above and beyond, from staging a home to making sure it is priced well and being confident that it will sell. From first-time buyers to clients who are downsizing, Blakely has built her own business around helping others achieve their home dreams. “The best part of what I do is finding real estate challenges that turn into opportunities because those situations help me find clients who become my friends,” Blakely says. “I love being able to serve their real estate needs and help them sell a home, buy a home, or both.” Despite navigating a pandemic, Blakely was able to have her second-best year in real estate in 2020. Blakely says that being a Realtor is very challenging, but her clients make everything worth it and that is her biggest reward. Blakely says that she cares deeply for her clients and makes giving back to the community a top priority. “That is my mission—to make sure that I take care of my clients, serve their needs, give to Children’s Miracle Network from every sale, and to continue to give back to my community.” Central Virginia HOME Fall 2021

Since opening in July 1990, Accents has continued to provide the community with elements to beautify their homes from the inside out. Voted top provider for home accessories and gifts, Accents offers a variety of flags, home decor and more. Stocked with everything from birdfeeders to stationery, Accents has something to offer everyone. Owner Deborah Fears Keely and her daughter Ashleigh Taylor enjoy everything about running a family business in Lynchburg, but they especially love the community. Keely recalls how many customers have now become family and how she never forgets customers that touch her heart. “The best thing about Lynchburg is the people,” Taylor says. “The people make this city what it is and it makes it so easy to serve people.” Accents is best known for selling handmade American flags, and they have continued to build their business with a sense of patriotism. In September 2001, Keely placed her first order of 10,000 American flags, which she believed was going to take a long time to sell. “Two weeks after [the purchase], 9/11 hit,” Keely says. “I had people lined up all the way down Main Street and I sold all of the flags in one day. People’s patriotism just exploded.” By helping others make their home beautiful, Keely and Taylor receive their own sense of satisfaction and happiness. “It is just a love and it never grows old,” Keely says.

LIVE indian cuisine
masala Dabba
Your Curated Collection of dyi Go-To Spices BY S LOA N E LU C A S If variety is the spice of life, then a variety of spices leads to a more adventurous life—at least in the kitchen. Indian cuisine, like many regional cuisines, relies on a core collection of rich spices to create the distinctive flavors we associate with sumptuous curries or spicy tandoori grills. Those same spices can also give your favorite recipes a new twist. One way to make it easier to use your favorite Indian spices is to create a traditional masala dabba, a ready-to-go, easily accessed spice tray featuring an assortment of seven frequently used spices, often found in Indian kitchens. And with these seven on hand, you can make many popular favorites, including tikka masala sauce. 9 8
Seven small metal tins are nestled inside a larger metal dish, which is then fitted with a cover. You can buy a masala dabba online at Amazon or at specialty online shops like Etsy, which offer a variety of creative versions. International grocers may also carry them, which is also a great place to purchase your spices. When you cook, uncovering the larger dish allows you quick and easy access to your seven go-to spices inside the tins, so you can keep cooking without breaking stride to rummage around your pantry for what you need. These helpful holders also allow you to only expose a small amount of spices at a time for quick use, so the rest of your spices can remain stored in airtight containers until you need to restock. Central Virginia HOME Fall 2021
TIKKA MASALA SAUCE
This spicy, rich tomatobased sauce can be used with chicken, Indian cheese (paneer) or tofu. SAUCE BASE 2 tablespoon unsalted butter 1 medium onion, chopped 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 tablespoon fresh grated ginger 1 14.5 can diced tomatoes, or 4-5 Roma tomatoes ⅓ cup raw cashews ½ cup water SPICES 1 teaspoon salt ¾ teaspoon turmeric powder 2 teaspoons garam masala 1 tablespoon coriander powder 1½ teaspoon cumin powder 1 teaspoon red chili powder ¼ teaspoon cardamom powder FINISHING SPICES 2 teaspoons dried fenugreek 1 teaspoon butter (optional) 1 teaspoon sweetener (agave, honey or sugar) In a heavy-bottomed pot on medium-high heat, melt butter and add chopped onions. Sauté until they soften. Add the garlic and ginger and sauté for an additional minute. Add tomatoes, spices and cashews, and cook for two minutes. Stir in water. Bring sauce to a boil, then reduce heat to medium. Cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally to keep the sauce from sticking, and adding water if it looks too dry or thick. If you have a hand-held immersion blender, you can puree the sauce to a smooth consistency in the pot. With a traditional blender, wait for the sauce to cool, blend smooth, then return to the pot. Add dried fenugreek and butter and simmer uncovered for 2-3 minutes. Add agave, honey or a little sugar to taste. MAKES 2 ½ CUPS. c vhomemaga zine .com 9 9
Which spices should go into a masala dabba? There is no set seven spices because Indian cuisine varies regionally. However, some spices are more common across regions than others and might find a useful place in your table. Cardamom Powder:

Cardamom powder is ground from the seed pods of various plants in the ginger family and is used to spice both sweet and savory dishes, including chai tea and curries. Cardamom adds hints of lemon and mint. Coriander Powder: The coriander plant is also known as cilantro, usually when referring to the fresh green leaves. Ground seeds become coriander powder, used in a wide range of Indian curries and sauces. Coriander seeds impart a lemony flavor and floral aroma to dishes. The flavor pairs well with cumin, so many recipes include both. Cumin Powder: Cumin is a spice made from the dried seed of a plant from the parsley family. It is one of the most popular spices, used across Latin America, the Middle East, North Africa, and India, among other regions. Cumin has a warm, earthy flavor, adding both sweetness and bitterness. Dried Fenugreek:

FENUGREEK
Fenugreek is in the same family as alfalfa, chickpeas, and peanuts. Its dried leaves impart a flavor that is sweet, slightly nutty, and similar to maple syrup. Garam Masala: Garam masala isn’t a single spice but a pre-mixed blend of spices purchased as one seasoning, although the exact ones might differ from one garam masala mix to another. Masala means “spices” and garam means “hot,” but the spice mix is not actually spicy. With enough individual spices on hand, you can even make your own garam masala mix based on your personal preferences and intended use. Red Chili Powder: In Indian cuisine, red chili powder is Kashmiri chili powder, not to be Central Virginia HOME Fall 2021
confused with cayenne, paprika, or other red chili powders, many of which pack much more heat. Kashmiri chili powder is very mild and tends to add more color than heat. Turmeric Powder: The distinct yellow color in many Indian dishes often comes from this spice, which is the ground root of the turmeric plant. Turmeric is part of the ginger family, and ground turmeric imparts an earthy, pungent, slightly bitter flavor with a hint of mustard and horseradish. It’s subtle, but adds a slight bitter depth to dishes. As such, turmeric is often added to enrich spice blends like curry powder. There are many other Indian spices you can add to your collection to season a full range of recipes, but those seven will get you started. Buy the least amount possible and leave only a small amount accessible in the masala dabba, storing the rest in an airtight container. The ease-of-use and newfound familiarity with these spices might even inspire you to experiment by adding them to your own standby recipes, such as chicken casseroles, barbeque rubs, biscuits, and other tried-and-true favorites, which could be refreshed with a little kick. ✦

DESIGN make room for music
music room design a room for moods your favorite tunes B Y K E N DA L L AT K I N S L I V I C K
The vinyl turntable craze has officially gone mainstream. Whether you’re a musician yourself, a diehard fan, or someone with a bonus room you’ve always wanted to spruce up, this is a trend that offers a fun escape. What type of room makes for an epic music space? Unless you want it in your main living area, choose a room that would otherwise be lightly used or largely ignored. It could be a spare bedroom, office,
formal living room or dining room. Now consider whether you and your guests will be practicing an instrument in this room, jamming out to vinyl rock and roll, playing feel-good music in the background to complement lively conversation, or listening to light jazz while playing games at a card table in a familyfriendly atmosphere. Determine the size, scope and purpose of this room.
So, where does one obtain a record player? Not everyone is lucky enough to inherit (or to have saved) a vintage player in mint condition. Luckily, retail supply has responded to demand, and depending on your level of interest and budget, a music setup isn’t hard to come by these days. Ranging from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand, you can purchase record players in record stores, on Amazon, at any of the box stores like Walmart or Best Buy, or used online. To break down and simplify the setup, understand that a record player involves the entire audio system that encompasses the vinyl turntable and other parts. The record player setup will
generally include the turntable itself, the stylus or needle, the tone arm (the piece a DJ would use to scratch), the cartridge, the pre-amplifier and amplifier. You’ll want to set your audio equipment on a flat, level surface. Be sure to plan for enough space in the back to hide all wires, cables, doodads and whatchamacallits. Another pro tip is to plug everything into a quality surge protector for safety purposes. Sectioned consoles, cube tables, stacked racks, or even classic bookshelves can be great for displaying the record player on top and storing records underneath. You could also display the turntable on a standalone surface, while keeping the records in a

separate area. To protect the integrity of the record, store upright and away from windows and heat sources. Remember, the storage space has to be conducive to the vertical height of the album covers. To create even more visual interest, play around with accent or backlighting for your turntable, record collection, or both. A room inspired by music can be anything you want it to be! However, if you’re looking for inspiration, here are some style ideas to consider. Classic rock ‘n’ roll
If you want to create a mood of wild celebration—dancing the night away at a concert—this might be your favorite. Custom neon signs, easily purchased on Etsy, are a signature touch for this style. With dark, moody tones, along with touches of red, this room ignites passion. Furniture could include brown or black leather, dark-stained woods, and metals. Statement rugs can include bold prints, music symbols, and graphics with a rebellious flair. Earthy vintage
If you’re a free spirit, you might go for more of a boho theme. Set up a vinyl turntable in the corner atop a rattan table. Store your record collection in a separate cube-style shelf, filling several compartments, while decking out the other compartments with green plants. Scatter wicker baskets around the room to store plants, records, games and the like. Maybe you’ll even display a few macrame wall hangings. The idea is light, natural and airy with a nod to the 70s. Choose comfy, low furniture like exotic poufs and possibly a hanging swing. Toss in some throw pillows and blankets with lots of embellishments. Likewise, a bohemian or distressed rug is the cherry on top. Eclectic funk
Warm neutral leathers, long fringe, and alternative rock vibes infuse lots of personality into this room. Variety is the name of the game, and the color palette encompasses both dark and colorful hues. Exposed brick pairs well with funky rugs. Faux cowhides offer a Western vibe, as do Moroccan and Native American rugs. Tribal throw pillows with nature motifs invite a festive atmosphere. Add a disco ball, and you have just enough variation to dub this look as “eclectic” or “new age.”

Extra fun features Music Memorabilia: Chances are you have more than a few musical memories. Framed concert tickets, record covers, posters, and even an enlarged page from the turntable instruction manual can look stunning on a music fandom gallery wall. Instruments as Decor: Wall mounts provide both decor and storage for guitars. A larger instrument like the harp or piano will inevitably take up floor space, but don’t discount the aesthetic value of the classics, especially when paired with a fine Oriental rug. Yet you don’t have to play to display. You can repurpose an instrument that has passed its prime. Reimagine that old drum as a barstool, card table or pendant chandelier. Rotate that banjo horizontally, add a few metal hooks, and you’ve got yourself a coat rack. Will you be serving drinks at a wet bar or bar cart area? Damaged records can be resurrected and converted into coasters or pendant lights.
Whatever your jam, follow the music in your heart, compose a plan, and simply start! ✦

GARDEN flower of the month
flowers speak their own language BIRTH FLOWERS
B Y K AT H E R I N E F U LG H U M K N O P F
Floriography, the language of flowers, is an ancient art form that Chinese, Japanese, Middle Eastern, Greek, and Roman cultures practiced through their poetry, art and floral arrangements. Victorian lovers took a flower’s meaning and turned it into a secret communication method. In Victorian times, flowers given in a posey spoke without verbal interaction or including a written note. Most often these were communications of love, but the message could convey other feelings. It all depended upon the flowers chosen.

Birth flowers originated in these old beliefs that each flower represents an attribute or mannerism, which is passed along to those born in the month associated with a particular flower. Different characteristics of the roots, bloom, stem, seed or foliage gave way to this mystic language found in poetry and old inscriptions. As summer flowers fade and fall arrives, the academic cycle of the year opens: a perfect time to learn meanings associated with flowers. Does being born under this flower gift the qualities it carries? Find your month and see if the traits fit. September: Aster and Morning Glory
September generates asters that tender love and care. In white, red, blue and lilac, these spiky petal flowers attract birds, bees and humans. Aster comes from the Greek word for “star,” and symbolizes powerful love. Ancient people burned asters to chase away serpents. Morning Glory means affection. These flowers bloom in early morning and as the day fades, they close. They proffer simple symbols of affection. October: Marigolds and Cosmos
Marigolds tender creativity, warmth and passion; their bright orange flower heads resemble the sun. Cosmos’ frail stalks with colorful big heads mean order and balance; the tidy shape of their petals represents the peace and tranquility of the universe. November: Chrysanthemum
November offers but one flower: chrysanthemum. Its name is so large that it is often shortened to mum. Chrysanthemums display a unique petal shape and propagate in voluminous colors that connote happiness, loyalty, optimism and honesty. December: Narcissus and Holly
Narcissus bulbs pop out sweet, white buds. Grown in glass vases or containers with beds of small pebbles, narcissus arouse a fragrant, vanillic holiday smell. They symbolize hope and wealth. Holly with its shiny green leaves bordered with prickly edges
and bright red berries aptly stands for protection, defense and goodwill. January: Carnations and Snowdrops
January’s flowers are carnations and snowdrops. Carnations offer a burst of color and stand for admiration and love. These simple beauties symbolize strength; carnations can bloom in cold weather if temperatures stay above freezing. After the excess of colors and festivities of our winter holidays, white snowdrops push up through tired brown grasses and woodlands in the bleak mid-winter. These pure white blossoms on vivid green stalks stand for hope and rebirth. February: Violet and Primrose
February flowers alert that spring is coming. Both violets and primroses display dainty buds that peek out of large green foliage—just a hint of bold purple, pink and white in a sea of green. Violets stand for modesty and faithfulness. This traditionally purple bloom symbolizes virtue and loyalty. Primroses in reds and yellows epitomize young love. It’s not a coincidence that Valentine’s Day lands smack in the middle of this month of violets and primroses. March: Daffodil and Jonquil
March ushers in the daffodil and jonquil, names often used interchangeably. Although related, each bulb carries its own

meaning. Daffodils represent new beginnings while jonquils signify prosperity. Cheerful yellow daffodil blooms remind of spring’s heady arrival. Winds, rain, and the occasional snow flurry do not impede these strong floras. Jonquils, a variety of the daffodil, offer color combinations of white petals with orange and pale-yellow centers that symbolize prosperity.

April: Daisy and Sweet Pea
April offers the simple blooms of daisies, which represent purity and innocence. Daisies evoke images of young girls making daisy chains in a field while their sister flower sweet peas blossom in nearby cottage gardens. Sweet peas in various shades of pink, lavender and salmon represent blissful pleasure. Their fragrant smell induces the fresh aroma of spring bouquets. May: Lily of the Valley and Hawthorn

May brings lilies of the valley that tender sweetness and motherhood. These fragrant dainty white clusters grow on one stem amidst slender dark green foliage. They evoke woodland images of wildflowers picked as a gift for Mother’s Day or a May Day celebration. Hawthorn flowers sprout on shrubs. Their white or pink blooms represent hope; in the fall these bushes produce red berries. June: Rose and Honeysuckle
June arrives with a flourish of roses and honeysuckle blossoms. While roses signify romance, and are found in reds, yellows, Central Virginia HOME Fall 2021
whites and pinks, the simple white-with-a-touch-of-yellow honeysuckle buds denote happiness. July: Larkspur and Water Lily
July’s heat advocates for water activities and picnics in fields where larkspur often flowers in white, indigo and pink. Pink larkspur means fickleness while white stands for grace and positivity; indigo is dignity and love. Water lilies float on ponds from May to September representing virtue. They symbolize purity and rebirth as these lotus-shaped flowers last four days before they sink and new ones flourish on top. August: Gladiolus and Poppy
August appears with the dog days of summer. Tall gladiolus in hot pinks, oranges, reds, purples, yellows and whites with thick stalks convey the
symbol of a sword. Its mighty swath illustrates strength of character and security. Vibrant poppies flourish in all shades of red to express imagination. Poppies are worn in France, Canada and the United Kingdom on Armistice Day to remember those lost in World War I. Flowers blooming in gardens or peeking out of buckets in a floral shop or grocery store display transform easily into a bouquet that provides days of joy. Choosing flowers is often based on color, shape or texture. What if the bouquetto-be is a birthday gift and the flowers represent the birthday month? Perhaps the arrangement conveys a special hidden message in the selected blooms. Learning flowers’ unique symbolisms makes creating arrangements more interesting. It is an old custom worth emulating. ✦

great room FAVORITE GREAT ROOM, HOLIDAY/WINTER 2018
In dreaming of their future custom home, Chris and Shannon Franzelas had similar but distinct visions: Chris wanted privacy, rustic charm, wooden beams and open spaces, while Shannon also yearned for privacy, but preferred bold splashes of bright color and large graphics in clean, bright spaces. The resulting home is a marriage of these visions, and the great room exudes the best of the style. A soaring, see-through stone fireplace anchors the casually elegant great room, while cushy, cozy seating around a giant leather pouf makes the perfect perch to catch a ballgame. Particularly dramatic are the poplar beams, sourced from a mill in Huddleston, that fan out across the ceiling, drawing the eye to an angled wall of floor-to-ceiling windows and mountain vistas beyond. c vhomemaga zine .com 113

FAVORITE COMPLETE RENOVATION (I), EARLY SPRING 2018
Katrina and Scott Morris, high school sweethearts, grew up spending time in the century-old farmhouse on seven acres in Gladys which belonged to Scott’s childhood friend’s family. Fast forward 20 years, and the Morrises, up for a challenge, bought the home from the friend, who now lived out of town and didn’t have time for the big overhaul required from years of vacancy and neglect. They put their skills to use—Scott, a commercial contractor and Katrina experienced in interior design— to bring “Morris Manor” back to life for a busy family, from choppy and dark to light and bright with a modern farmhouse vibe. To restore functionality, the home needed everything from structural work, including foundation and floor repair, removing walls and creating a new cook’s kitchen, to more aesthetic work, such as paint and updated bathrooms. 114

Patience and persistence were key in the complete renovation of this 1920s classic Tudor near Virginia Episcopal School. In considering the purchase of the home, Suzanne and Steve Johnson ignored the initial advice of trusted contractors who told them to pass because of all the work it needed. Because they loved the home, they proceeded with the purchase, and over the course of many months, the home was fully restored: every major system and surface overhauled, unfinished spaces finished, exterior refreshed, bathrooms added, and a sparkling new kitchen as the cherry on top. Suzanne’s vision of bright white surfaces to highlight their art collection was made possible by a custom Benjamin Moore paint color, “Suzanne Johnson White.”

FAVORITE ATTIC SPACE, FALL 2017
Debbie and Marc Sirockman’s waterfront property in Gretna, originally purchased as a second home, became their full-time residence in 2016. They made many do-it-yourself cosmetic upgrades, including the transformation of unused attic space into a den, half-bath, nook and guest room. In the attic’s wide hallway, a wall of windows salvaged from a Manhattan factory overlooks the great room below, and wooden beams above add warmth and charm. Debbie, who has a knack for scouring flea markets, auctions and estate sales for unique decor, has furnished this space and the rest of the home with a mix of found treasures and new pieces to create a comfortable, welcoming vibe.

FAVORITE WALLPAPER, FALL 2020
With three kids out of college and one high schooler at home, Amy and Jimmy Davis felt they no longer needed a large, traditional historic home, and were ready to “go all in” with a new adventure. They fully renovated a midcentury modern ranch home in the Boonsboro area to include open spaces and modern finishes. In their primary bath, bold geographic wallpaper in blues and golds makes a big design statement against crisp white cabinetry, modern sconces, gold hardware, and a fun and funky mirror.
wallpaper FAVORITE OUTDOOR ROOM, FALL 2018 With an eye toward retirement, in 2015 John and Cynde Buckles traded their traditional home on seven acres where they had raised their children for new construction with a view and a simpler, more casual lifestyle. The result is over 6,000 square feet of main-level living, designed under Cynde’s careful expertise as an interior designer. Cynde said one of her favorite spaces in the home is the outdoor room, protected from the elements but open to the air and the views. The space features an outdoor kitchen and dining area as well as a casual seating area with a fireplace. Beyond, terraced patios capture breezes and views of the woods and small lake.

FAVORITE HISTORIC HOME, SPRING 2017
The legendary brick Georgian mansion at the corner of Rivermont Avenue and Langhorne Road is known to some as Kriselea, others as Oaklawn, still others as the Villa Maria Academy—but Todd Leap and Mark Little call it “home.” They brought the 1911 estate back from disrepair after they bought it in 2013, respecting its inherent grandeur while infusing it with their own aesthetic. The 15,000-square-foot home includes seven bedrooms, six bathrooms, a study, a gym, and access to a widow’s walk from the third floor—rumored to be the highest vantage point in the city.
FAVORITE GARDEN, SPRING 2017
The gardens at Villa Maria have as much historical significance as the home itself and have required painstaking restoration. Charles Freeman Gillette’s original 1930s design for a reflecting garden included a reflecting pool, serpentine wall and brick arbor; this space was barely recognizable when Mark and Todd purchased the property. As historic preservationists, they have worked to revive and replicate the Gillette garden as closely as possible to its initial outline and to use existing materials when viable. General landscaping needed an overhaul as well. For example, all the English boxwoods around the perimeter of the house were removed due to neglect and disease, and replaced with American boxwoods, while 330 additional boxwoods were added where needed.

FAVORITE FORMAL LIVING ROOM, SPRING 2017
The formal living room at Villa Maria features one the home’s nine fireplaces as the focal point as well as fine furnishings and rugs in muted grays, reds and blues, oil paintings, pottery and plants. The light gray walls are a versatile backdrop for the couple’s personal treasures to shine.

FAVORITE OUTDOOR SPACE, SUMMER 2018
When Major League baseball player Brandon Inge and his wife Shani decided to return to Brandon’s home town of Lynchburg, they found the perfect property on 400 acres in Goode to raise their young family. The five bedroom French Country home is rustic but elegant, a fresh take on a centuries-old style. While the interiors of the Inges’ home are exquisitely designed, the outdoor space was just as thoughtfully planned and executed. Foundational landscaping was added around the home, and well as stacked rear porches with woodburning fireplaces and drop-down screens to keep bugs out. A saltwater pool and hot tub, along with a water feature, a fire pit area, and a large patio are also part of the exterior design scheme. 120

FAVORITE FOYER, SPRING 2018
Renee and Dave Wood bought their brick Colonial home on Langhorne Road because they needed more space for their blended family. They wanted a place family, friends, children and grandchildren would want to return again and again. These visitors are welcomed by the home’s stunning entry, with a unique curved staircase and William Morris-print wallpaper highlighting this architectural marvel. Renee also had several of the front door panels removed and replaced with repurposed glass, which lets more light in to this gracious space. c vhomemaga zine .com 121
unique architecture FAVORITE UNIQUE ARCHITECTURE, SPRING 2014
An abandoned quarry is the site of one-of-a-kind architecture in the Lynchburg area. Nancy and Bill Young built this, their dream home, in 1981 after working with architect Hal Craddock on what would be his first home design, an innovative passive solar home to boot. The home had to be sited at just the right angle and height to maximize the effectiveness of the sunshine, and is positioned on a pedestal anchored to the quarry floor. The heart of the home is its two-story solarium, overlooking quarry cliffs and receiving maximum sunlight during the day with its east-southwest exposure. The home has won numerous awards including accolades for energy and wildlife habitat.

The dining room features vibrant green paint on the walls, a red stripe in the ceiling molding, and a bright sky-blue ceiling. When Melissa Mangold bought the historic 1907 Georgian Revival on Rivermont Avenue, she had the vision to transform it into a fun, fresh space for modern living. A well-traveled expert in interior design and visual merchandising, Mangold drew on her experiences for inspiration. The colorful dining room was inspired by the colors and vibrancy of Barcelona, with notes of pink, blue and yellow in the rug, the Eames-style dining chairs around the sleek modern table, and the brightly colored clocks above the fireplace.

FAVORITE DOWNTOWN CONDO, FALL 2015
After an out-of-the-blue offer to buy the home where they raised three children, Claudia and Mark Stubstad had three weeks to move out and find a new home. Ever ready for adventure, the couple kept only the belongings they loved and downsized to a condominium at James River Place, freeing up their time from burdensome maintenance and allowing them to travel for work and pleasure. In the condo they created a cohesive space with great flow, introducing as few elements as possible: ebonized bamboo throughout, walls painted in Benjamin Moore’s Simply White, and appliances, cabinets, countertops and hardware in the kitchen, baths and closets constructed in the same style and materials. As a result, the sleek and consistent backdrop in the Stubstads’ new condo allows the panoramic views of the James River as well as their own eclectic furnishings and art collections to shine.

When Allen and Carrington Bass designed their dream home in Gladys, Carrington knew she wanted it to be a place of family fun for the couple’s young, growing family. The 6,600-square-foot home is positioned just so on the mountainside to allow for a large basement and expansive outdoor spaces on two levels—plenty of room for young boys to play and grow. But perhaps the biggest piece of fun is right inside the front door: a giant slide in the two-story foyer.

GARDEN awareness garden
seeds of hope and remembrance B RICK DEDICATION SUPPORTS GARDEN’S MISSION
S
B Y C A R T E R H E A L D B E N DA L L
Since its dedication in September 2003, the Awareness Garden has provided a peaceful place, surrounded by nature, where the public can come to reflect on the people in their lives who have been impacted by cancer. Located at the Ed Page entrance to the Blackwater Creek Trail, the Awareness Garden was the dream of the late Lalla Hancock Sydnor. Sydnor, a Lynchburg resident, was an avid gardener and a fierce cancer advocate. As she bravely battled cancer, she envisioned what the garden could be and set about making it happen. Since her passing in 2003, there are now benches, fountains and pergolas where visitors can stop and reflect. At the center of the garden is Lalla’s Bell. Visitors are invited to ring the bell three times to commemorate milestones in their loved one’s journey through cancer. Adding to the beauty of the space are immaculately kept gardens. Price Blair, chair of the Board of Directors for the Awareness Garden Foundation, says that the gardens are a labor of love from Dolly Horner, chair of the Landscape Committee. Horner has led a team of dedicated friends and volunteers since the beginning. The team works in the garden on a weekly basis, pruning, planting, raking, picking up sticks, tidying and cleaning—all the “dirty work” that keeps the garden pristine. Blair says, “There’s not a weed that escapes Dolly’s attention. She’s absolutely incredible.” Kay Vaughan is another team leader at the garden, serving as chair of the Events Committee, and has also been involved in the Awareness Garden since the beginning. For years, Vaughan and her late husband J.P. organized the Pink Games at E.C. Glass High School. In the Pink Games, athletes wear sponsored jerseys

and patches honoring lives of those who have been touched by cancer, and in the process also raise money for the garden’s scholarship endowment. Since the garden’s inception, the scholarship endowment has awarded over $100,000 to collegebound students whose lives have been affected by cancer. More importantly, these games connect young athletes to the local community and raise awareness that many people fight courageous battles off the playing fields. Vaughan has also helped organize the biannual brick dedication ceremonies. Today, the garden’s pathways are made up of more than 11,000 bricks, each honoring those whose lives have been touched by cancer. Every brick purchased allows the Awareness Garden Foundation to fulfill their mission. Blair says the bricks are powerful remembrances for the community, including himself. His own father passed away from cancer in 2005. “For me personally, I don’t visit the cemetery to be with my dad. Instead, I visit his brick at the Awareness Garden,” he says. The next dedication will be held October 17 at 2:30 pm. There are also a number of other naming opportunities, including fountain seating areas, stone benches, pergola columns, entrance plaques and boulders. More information is available at awarenessgarden.org. Every season in the garden offers something different. Come hear leaves rustling across the bricks in the fall or see Christmas lights in winter. View new blossoms emerging in spring and birds playing in the fountain in summer. Come ring Lalla’s Bell. Finally, come trace your fingers across the words on a brick. Each brick tells a story—a story of a life well lived, a story of love. ✦
