WHAT’S COOKING IN KITCHENS TOP TRENDS FOR THE HEART OF THE HOME BY CHRISTINA MOORE
2 0
S m i t h M o u n t a i n L a ke H O M E 2 0 2 1
O
ver the past year we have seen that people are spending more time at home, and now more than ever, the kitchen is certainly the heart of the home. Whether you live in a tiny home or a sprawling mansion, when you host a gathering, your guests will likely end up socializing in the kitchen. The kitchen is also the hub for spending time with your loved ones—chatting while cooking dinner, homework sessions, snacking while catching the big game, or serving as an impromptu office. Having a beautiful and well-designed space is crucial. When considering kitchen design, some elements are timeless. You want the space to be functional and beautiful, and to feature classic surfaces that won’t require frequent remodeling or replacing. Along with those constants, however, every year brings a new mix of kitchen trends to make your space stylish. Whether you are making plans for new construction, remodeling an existing kitchen or simply looking for some design ideas for a little refresh, we’ve rounded up trends here for inspiration. You will see that many of these design trends lend themselves to a global move toward minimalist design, an open multifunctional living concept, and integrative technology within the kitchen.

Cabinetry, color and more
Miranda Dudley, owner and interior designer of Designer Solutions in Moneta, offers some advice for 2021 color trends. “Things are warming up a bit in the kitchen from flooring, to cabinetry, paint colors and lighting,” she says. “You will likely still see your fair share of classic bright white and neutral gray in kitchens, but also will see colors begin to trend toward wood tones and a warmer palette.” This warmer palette often comes into play with painted cabinetry in shades of blue, teal, emerald, black, plum and navy. Jessica Byrd, owner and interior designer of By Design Interiors in Hardy, adds to this color advice. “Many of my clients are still choosing color schemes that trend gray, but more of a warmer tone, leaning more towards taupe, to be able to incorporate both warm and cool finishes of cabinetry, flooring and furniture,” she says. Stained wood cabinetry is also experiencing a bit of a revival after being out of fashion for a while. Do these jewel-toned colors and wood accents sound a bit like the 1960s and 1970s? Yes, but with a modern twist. Rest assured; avocado appliances aren’t making a comeback just yet! You will most often see this color infusion with painted or stained cabinetry, a colored appliance, or statement tiled areas. If you’re feeling a bit hesitant with bold color, however, you can dip your toe into this trend by installing removable wallpaper from the myriad of options out there, or through artwork and accessories. For those who are bolder in their choices, all-black-matte kitchens with black gloss accents are rising in trend. In Europe, particularly, “all black is the new all white” indicates this move toward this classic and stylish choice. You could even consider creating an all-black island in contrast to cabinets in a different color as a modification of this trend. Whether part of an all-black kitchen or not, black matte appliances are rising in popularity 2 2
over stainless steel which has been the primary choice for the past few decades. Dan DeNeal, president of DeNeal’s Cabinets in Moneta, says, “Homeowners are pairing neutral tones of cabinetry with pops of color on islands and complementing with warm flooring. Many are also choosing to install statement walls of tile backsplash featuring a blast of texture and color.” Flooring choices for his clients are often medium- to dark-wood floors or wood-look tile floors for the kitchen space. Dudley adds that luxury vinyl planks and tile flooring continue to be popular choices. Byrd says that white Shaker cabinets are still the top request, noting that clients will often incorporate a darker paint or wood stain in the range hood and island. Convenience is still important, too. “A lot of clients are choosing to include an appliance garage to hide their everyday small appliances, such as toasters and coffee makers, while incorporating a microwave drawer in the island. This makes it nice to be able to leave more room in the perimeter cabinetry for ovens and hoods, and also makes it easy for children to be able to reach the microwave and heat up their own food without bothering their parents,” she says. Modern advances, eco-choices
As consumers continue to become more eco-conscious, you will see an increase of recycled or sustainable materials in spaces, whether that be reclaimed wood or masonry materials, ecofriendly products, low-emission appliances, or industrial elements being repurposed. In addition to repurposing local raw materials, you will also see a continuing trend toward supporting locally owned businesses, designers and industries. While previously, a source of pride may have been your countertop imported from Italy, now that satisfaction lies in supporting your local neighbor. Technology has entered the kitchen space to offer conveniences and to increase safety. From smart, eco-positive S m i t h M o u n t a i n L a ke H O M E 2 0 2 1

or programmable appliances, smartphone-controlled lighting, Bluetooth audio systems, motion-detecting faucets, and home devices such as Amazon Alexa or Google Home to give you measuring advice or recipes, there are abundant integrated technology features to assist the modern family. Smart appliances are also moving toward a more convenient and environmentally friendly purpose. For example, there are now smart convection ovens that bake faster and more evenly for a reduction in electricity use, featuring triple athermic glass to conserve heat within the oven space during use. These appliances also offer features that allow the owner to access controls from their smartphone or offer repair diagnostics through an app. Features and finishes

Open shelving has been popular through much of the 21st century; however, having those shelves in your kitchen requires artful arrangements of dishes and accessories that match for a pleasing aesthetic. While convenient for access, potential storage space is lost with an open shelving design as open shelves tend to offer less surface space for storing items. The move now is toward a return to increased cabinet space, and in many cases, floorto-ceiling cabinetry, to maximize storage and maintain clutterfree counters. Additionally, cabinets are trending toward clean lines and minimalist design, many cabinets having push-release features to create a sleek look rather than featuring traditional knob or handle hardware. Hidden and well-located storage will also be a key to increasing organization and function while maintaining a minimalist look. Mixed textures and material colors are the current trend. When tastefully done, mixed metals offer personality over a uniform color collection and allow for statement pieces like an artful faucet or gorgeous cabinet hardware without the worry of matching your appliances. Brass fixtures and hardware in particular remain popular, particularly with their ability to complement the rising use of jewel-toned colors. Both Byrd and Dudley state that matte black hardware has also been a popular choice among their clients. While granite and marble countertops will likely continue to be a classic design choice, their surfaces are sometimes fussy, requiring specific care, sealing and cleaning. According to Byrd, DeNeal and Dudley, to attain the overall look of marble in a more durable surface, quartz countertops are a popular choice among homebuilders and renovators, paired with an apron-front farmhouse-style sink. DeNeal says, “Cabinets with minimalist Shaker-style doors with a clean, white finish paired with

calacatta quartz countertops are still my most popular requests among consumers. Quartz offers an upscale and contemporary look while also offering durability and ease-of-care. Quartz countertops also require no sealing and maintain their beautiful, gleaming looks for years.” Byrd adds that leathered or matte finishes are great choices to add texture. Backsplashes
It’s not likely that subway tiles or mosaics for backsplash options are going anywhere; however, one-piece solid-slab backsplashes in stainless steel, quartz or marble are gaining in popularity. Another trend for backsplashes is to have beautifully patterned, artistic tiles in your backsplash design to make a statement in an otherwise neutral space. If classic tiles are your choice, Byrd offers ideas to take them to the next level. “Backsplashes are trending on some variation of white subway tile, whether it be a larger size like a 4x12, or a textured or wavy tile. A medium to dark grout is also a nice contrast to really accentuate the darker hardware and fixtures in the room,” she says. She also notes that matte gray subway tile is another great way to add color against white cabinets. For those who are a little more adventurous, she says a
glass mosaic featuring a mix of colors is a “great way to liven up an otherwise simple, neutral color palette.” Lighting
Lighting can be relatively inexpensive, easy to replace and makes a huge impact on the feel of a space. Lighting for 2021 is geared toward statement pieces, using more tactile materials like wood and rattan and other woven-style options that offer a contemporary, natural vibe to the room. Another trend is swapping out multiple pendant lights for a single hanging bar fixture over islands, eliminating the need for multiple wiring locations in the ceiling. DeNeal says that LED lighting is the primary choice for not only cost savings but is also eco-friendly. Custom lighting options above cabinets, under cabinets and at the toe kick area are popular as a way to create a beautiful aesthetic as well as offer functional lighting for food prep and to increase safety. Islands
With a move toward open design spaces and larger kitchens, both DeNeal and Dudley agree that a large, functional island is what homeowners are looking for in new kitchen design. As Americans continue to embrace an

increasingly casual lifestyle, dining and cooking spaces will no longer be separated, and the eat-in kitchen will be experiencing a revival. Many of these islands feature multilevel spaces for cooking and eating, or perpendicular dining spaces extending from the island area. Since cooking and living spaces are now merging, you will also see an increase in furniture in a traditional “living room style” featured in the kitchen, such as stools with comfy tufted cushions and sturdy wood legs, as well as decor and art pieces traditionally found in spaces for relaxation. DeNeal offers this advice. “Eat-in kitchens are definitely the rising trend; don't fight it, that's where the action is. Hang out with the cook and eat right in the kitchen on that huge island,” he says. He also notes that the island is a great place to make an artistic statement by switching up the design materials or colors for a bit of personality. Byrd adds, “Almost every island we design has seating included
on one or two sides. The kitchen is a gathering place and family and guests alike want to be in on the action while the food is being prepared. I get a lot of clients that also forego a formal dining room for a cozier nook that can fit a variety of table shapes and seating styles.” If you are embarking on a new kitchen project or building a new home, you owe it to yourself to become knowledgeable on current trends that will impact your home’s value and desirability, as well as consider which investments get the best return on value for the longterm. Minimalist, multifunctional and open spaces that integrate technology are great investments that will not only increase your quality of life, but also improve both aesthetics and resale value of your home for the future. Goodbye all-white kitchens, and hello to warmth and jewel tones in a beautifully organized modern living space! ✦

Lakefront homeowners at Smith Mountain Lake enjoy soothing views of rippling water and lush vegetation. By implementing thoughtful landscaping on your own property, you can create appealing scenes that can enhance your shoreline, increase the value of your property, and protect the lake itself. Gardening at Smith Mountain Lake is much like gardening elsewhere. Property owners need to consider soil alkalinity, drainage and light exposure. Alkalinity is an easy DIY test, found at any store that sells gardening supplies. Drainage can be tested with meters as well, but this is often evident, with areas at lower levels typically wetter. Light exposure requires some thought, as the sun shifts both during the day and through the seasons. Light exposure also can change as trees or bushes reach maturity and cast longer shadows. For homeowners lucky enough to have a lakefront lot, an additional consideration is the 2 8
authority American Electric Power (AEP) has up to what is known as the 800-foot contour. When the Roanoke River was dammed in 1963, creating both Smith Mountain and Leesville lakes, AEP was licensed by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to operate the resulting Smith Mountain Project for energy generation. The normal pond elevation of Smith Mountain Lake is 795 feet, but AEP controls the shoreline of the lake up to the 800-foot elevation. This means a permit is required for any modifications to shoreline rip-rap, boat docks, and vegetation with a trunk diameter of a half-inch or greater up to the 800-foot mark on a S m i t h M o u n t a i n L a ke H O M E 2 0 2 1

property. Where that line falls depends on the property itself. While basic gardening—the planting of annuals or an herb or vegetable garden—is allowed anywhere on the property, the removal of significant bushes or trees requires a plan for replacement, as erosion is a significant issue around the lake, where most properties have a significant slope. “The best thing to do is to go to AEP’s website and follow their guidelines,” says Ronnie Mitchell of Ronnie Mitchell and Son Landscaping and Lawncare. Mitchell says water control and erosion are the most prevalent challenges he sees at the lake, noting that hardscaping slopes—retaining walls and drainage systems—can help manage runoff while grass is effective at absorbing water. He often recommends hard fescue, which is relatively low maintenance. “It grows to height and then lays over,” Mitchell says. “You have to maintain it with spray and fertilizer, and it can be shaggy, but you only have to mow it a couple of times.” Galen Layman, project manager for Seven Oaks Landscapes-Hardscapes, agrees that grass provides significant erosion control and allows families to enjoy their lawns for games or social gatherings. “Grass is the cheapest and easiest to maintain over the long term,” he says. With clay soil prevalent around the lake, adding lime will loosen the dirt, making it easier to work with, and drainage systems will help move water away from the surface quickly, mitigating erosion. Native plants are also recommended, as they are naturally adapted to the area. For small trees and bushes, Layman suggests viburnum, serviceberry, sweet spire and cardinal flower, all of which will bring color to the lot and, except for cardinal flower, scent. Larger trees would include river birch, redbud, fringe tree and the Virginia state tree, dogwood. Layman cautions, however, that consideration of mature height of anything planted is essential.“People pay a premium for their lake view,” he says. “When trees get tall, that’s an issue. You need to be thoughtful about protecting the sight line.” It’s not impossible to remove larger trees, Layman says, but it’s better to select carefully from the beginning, choosing trees and bushes that won’t grow to interfere with the scenery in the

distance. “If you remove any plant larger than half an inch diameter up to the contour line on the lot, you’re asking for AEP to get involved,” he says, noting that AEP makes site visits to properties that are changing hands to ensure compliance with their regulations. “Before you close [on the sale], pretty much whatever they ask for will be done.” Both Layman and Mitchell note that a professional landscaper will be able to identify issues on the property and help devise solutions, whether those are installed by a company or by someone with the time and energy to do it themselves. An additional option at the lake is to call on the Buffer Landscape Committee of the Smith Mountain Lake Association, an all-volunteer nonprofit group dedicated to the enjoyment and preservation of the lake for all, owners and visitors alike. Any lake landowner can contact the committee to arrange for an on-site meeting with a master gardener or master naturalist. After an assessment of the lot and discussion of the
homeowner’s goals, a plan will be prepared suggesting environmentally sensitive plantings, often in a buffer garden at the shoreline. “Years ago, homeowners were told the best way to control erosion was to plant grass,” says Bob Hastings, who has owned property at the lake since 1998. “Whatever is put on that grass— fertilizer, herbicides, pesticides—flows into the lake. If we continue to dump [chemicals] in the grass, we’re going to kill the lake.” Hastings notes that phosphorus levels at the lake from 2012 to 2019 have risen more than 200 percent, which is “very troubling,” because fertilizers without phosphorous are available. He says it’s not about eradicating grass—which he has on his lot—but about managing the grass safely and installing plantings at the shoreline that will absorb much of what runs off the grass. “If you’re going to invest in your grass, you’re going to have to invest in your buffer garden,” he says. “If your buffer garden doesn’t do what it’s going to do, you’re going to have a problem.” ✦

WHY RESIDENTS AND VISITORS FLOCK TO THE AREA BY J ERRY HALE

People who enjoy Smith Mountain Lake, whether as full or part-time residents or visitors, are quick to proclaim it “best” for waterfront fun. “Best” is always a subjective term. But here are some of the most oft-cited arguments for awarding that distinction to Smith Mountain Lake. Top of the list is location. SML is just a 4.5 hour drive from Dulles airport in Northern Virginia, 2¼ hours from Raleigh/Durham, 1¾ from Greensboro and just 45 minutes from Roanoke. Yet it’s nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, traffic-jam free and offering surrounding mountain views. “Easy to access, yet far from what you want to escape,” says Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Chris Finley. “Three or four cars in line at one of our few area stoplights is our version of ‘congestion.’” The lake is also proximate to a number of colleges and universities, and many newcomers—like Teri and Joe Sprague, who last year retired to a lakefront home in Boxwood Green, Franklin County—learn of Smith Mountain Lake through personal or family ties to one or more of those schools. Teri first dreamed of living on a mountain lake someday during her sophomore year at Virginia Tech, after a water skiing excursion with classmates introduced her to the area. Daughters Jocelyn and Ashley later attended Tech as well, which led to more opportunities to become enthralled with what Smith Mountain Lake offers. “When it came time to retire, I knew exactly where we should settle,” Sprague says. A bonus: Two of the Spragues’ daughters are now raising young families nearby—grandchildren who will, as they say here, “grow up Laker!” Life on the water
Next is water quality. SML’s water is “see-your-feet-when-youswim” clear and carefully monitored by volunteers from the Smith Mountain Lake Association for clarity, bacteria and algae. Refreshing plunges begin in May and last through late September, and the boating season—though fishermen ply the waters for trophy bass and stripers year-round—runs from April through October. Salt-free water and air are kind to vessels as well as structures and vehicles on shore. Water recreation abounds at SML. Sailors capture spring and fall breezes; boaters have a long season of pulling grandkids on tubes, knee boards, skis and wakeboards. Wake surfing is common; so are trips to lakefront eateries and just cruising the myriad coves to ogle waterfront homes and landscaping. Sunset cruises are a must; the spectacle of the mountain backdrops changes with the seasons from various parts of the lake. Smith Mountain Lake is ideal for those new to boating and for experienced skippers alike. It’s generally deep, with few prop-
busting hazards. Channels are well-marked with navigational aids, so finding your way day or night is quite manageable. Marinas with boater services are abundant, and a typical weekly water level variation of just 1–2 feet contrasts favorably to other lakes where 6–8 foot level changes are a challenge for boatkeeping. Covered docks, often with lounging/entertaining space, are common, and the lake is in a surprisingly bug-free band where mosquitoes are seldom a detraction to dock and patio entertaining. On-land attraction
While the SML community is focused on the charms of the lake, there is more. An impressive arts scene, driven by the Smith Mountain Lake Arts Council, includes concerts, art and photography exhibitions and plays featuring local talent. Opportunities to volunteer abound through the churches and many non-profits that philanthropic residents have formed to assist those in need. Want to learn to play steel drums or bluegrass banjo? You can do that here. Or volunteer to help with the annual Charity Home Tour that uniquely lets visitors travel to the homes by either car or boat. Golfers will find ample country club and public courses, some with lakefront holes and all benefiting from Blue Ridge topography and views. Pickleball and tennis are readily available, as are bridge groups, book clubs and garden clubs. The lake attracts successful, talented people who continue pursuing their interests—but in a lakefront setting that attracts friends and relatives to visit and gorge on the water fun. A sense of community
Before COVID-19, when residents attended cocktail gatherings on docks and waterfront decks and patios, conversations often turned to, “How did you get here?” A not uncommon response goes something like this: “Well, we looked at lakes all up and down the East Coast, but none had all the charms of this one.” The combination of clear waters, mountain vistas, relaxed water recreation, rural charm and light traffic on surrounding roads is a hard act to top. However, there’s another common attraction. “It just may be the people who amaze me the most—they are so genuinely friendly,” says Dot Kelley, who with husband Bill Landon, has been a “weekender” at the lake for 17 years until buying a retirement home in Waverly a year ago.

A Michigander who enjoyed Lake Michigan and other lakes and rivers near her childhood home in Ludington, Dot was a fresh-water lover from the get-go. “Bill and I were living near DC when we got a mailer promoting Leesville Reservoir. I had always dreamed of owning a lake property someday, so we drove down to have a look. We settled on a lot there, but got lost driving around and stumbled on a glimpse of SML at Halesford Bridge. I knew instantly that was the lake I wanted to live on,” she says. So in March 2003, Dot and Bill bought what she calls a “cute little house” near Isle of Pines and have enjoyed countless weekends and vacations there with their five water-loving daughters. “The water is so fresh and pleasant, there are plenty of things to do and it’s not overrun with people on the roads or water. We’ve had a ball!” Yet it’s the evident Southern hospitality of everyone they meet—even the transplants—that makes Dot so eager to be here full-time. “We’re all-in,” she says. “SML is where we’ll retire and spend the rest of our days!” Realtor Jada Turner of Berkshire Hathaway Properties is anything but surprised by that account, noting how clients’ eyes widen with excitement when visiting properties on SML’s shores. “Whether it’s a cove view or main channel vista, a modest cottage or a roomy home to accommodate visits by large families, people quickly see how living here would be a wonderful experience.” ✦

RELOCATION RENOVATION B Y R YA N T I P P S
Photography by Craig Schaffer It’s a wonderful feeling to finally see the house that’s been built up around you become more than just inhabitable, when it becomes truly livable. For the better part of a year, Karen and John Weinhardt lived out of a guest bedroom and an office in their newly purchased home while it was otherwise stripped down to the studs, walls were removed and honey-colored floors, cabinetry and other accents were changed to better reflect the Weinhardts’ tastes. 38

Ed Vaughn, owner of WEV Construction, and his team were instrumental in transforming the Weinhardts’ house in the Montego Bay neighborhood of Franklin County into a comfortable and welcoming residence for their large family. “I loved the yard, loved the flat land. The house, though, needed lots of changes. I knew that from the start,” Karen says of the 5,200-square-foot home built in 2004. “But I also knew what we could do with it.” There was opportunity to bring a more contemporary look, with more versatile and muted white and gray tones, which has also helped the home feel brighter. The couple closed on the property in July 2019, and demolition work began soon afterward. By that Labor Day weekend, they had moved from Rochester Hills, Michigan, the relocation prompted by John’s retirement as CEO of an auto parts supplier. “Once he retired, we looked at each other and asked if we wanted to spend another winter in Michigan,” Karen says. “The answer,” she says with a smile, “was, ‘Nah!’” Two of their six children already lived locally in Vinton and Troutville, so the Weinhardts knew the Smith Mountain Lake area well. And this region offered more incentives—not the least of which was less threat from hurricanes—than the coastal Southeastern locations they were initially considering. “We love nature, and we love wildlife,” John says. “Our house in Michigan backed up against a wildlife preserve. Obviously, here we’re on the water in a beautiful setting.” They’re on a flat, 1.5-acre lot, with the home set slightly away from the water. They have 160 feet of shoreline and, after the renovations, a four-bedroom, 3.5-bath home to enjoy, comfortably sleeping 10.
“We like the fact that we’re situated back from the water, so that we have a nice backyard to utilize but are also able to look across to the lake,” John says. Its birth into something livable
When the Weinhardts finished selling their home in Michigan and arrived at the lake in late summer 2019, they were greeted by a post-demo home that was just a shell of its former self. Most notably, there was no kitchen to speak of, just a refrigerator plugged in at an out-of-the-way spot, as well as a Crock-Pot and an Instant Pot. Karen jokes that over that nearly 12-month span (made longer because of coronavirus-related delays) she became a pro with the slow-cooker and multicooker. Living at the house while the work was going on, with the chaos of so many people in and out, “That was something I’ll never do again,” Karen says. But that’s more because of the confines of the situation, being isolated to just a couple of rooms. Both John and Karen say they enjoyed meeting and interacting with all of the contractors who worked on the house, and even to this day, now that work is essentially completed, they miss having those crews around. Other than the “awkwardness” of trying to live in the house during the construction phase, with all of its plentiful noise and foot traffic, being on site helped them manage the project, John says. “We could participate in decisions on a regular basis.” Being retired and able to directly show a contractor what they wanted in a particular part of the house or to be able to go into Roanoke to pick out lighting, cabinet hardware or other elements at a moment’s notice helped smooth the renovation process. The main level was set up so that the couple could age in place, with much of the entertainment and guest space situated

in the lower level. Part of the strategy in selecting this house was that it was big enough for them to keep all of the furniture they had in Michigan. The kitchen, designed by Lara Lee Strickler of Ideal Cabinets, Inc., is one of the focal points of the main level, with white cabinetry, ample counter space, and a lot of visibility into the great room. A large section of the wall between those rooms was removed, as was an unnecessary doorway. A beautifully crafted gray table that seats eight lines the window side of the kitchen, while skylights usher in natural illumination above the sink. “I love my kitchen. I enjoy cooking, and I love having the grandkids in here,” Karen says. “It’s large enough that they can all pile in.” The flooring, from The Floor Source, is a manufactured wood floor that is utilized throughout both levels of the house. dogs and grandkids while still looking great in the process. In the great room, the fireplace was rebuilt with light gray stonework and a prominent mantel. A cascade of windows, climbing to the top of the home’s vaulted ceilings, provides striking views of the lake. Here, Karen worked with Mishelle Brosinski, owner of Envisions Flooring and Interiors, to add motorized sheer shades to cut down on the glare and the heat that the windows were creating. The colors and shapes for the great room’s window treatments,
custom area rugs and carpeting for the stairs down to the lower level tap into the design that was used in the kitchen. Just outside is a deck abutting a superbly inviting screened-in gazebo, with the grill and comfortable furniture just begging you to kick back and relax. It is a favorite place for the couple to spend their time. Off the great room are two white French doors that open into the comfortable yet sophisticated office, the same one where the couple spent much of their time that first year of construction.
smlhomemaga zine .com 4 3
In the hallway to the living area, one wall was moved a few feet to allow the master bedroom to be larger, so that some of the couple’s favorite furniture pieces—two large cherry-hued armoires with intricate grain designs—would be able to fit comfortably in the space. On the wall behind the bed, Karen had the builders create a battened panel wall that picked up elements from their previous home in Michigan. This treatment gives the room texture without the clutter of added wall hangings. Also on that wall, a sliding barnstyle door leads into the master bathroom and closet, which expertly continues the square pattern. Whether the door is opened or closed, the design is so precise that the pattern blends seamlessly. “I’m thrilled with the way it turned out. It’s exactly what I asked them for,” Karen says. Even the iridescent Labradorite door pull stands out, and the couple loves that when the sun hits just right, vibrant colors dance off of it. In the bathroom, a double sink with a granite countertop lines one wall, while a shower with a stunning combination of tile and glass is nestled in the corner. “The blue color and the flowing pattern of the tile reminds me of the lake,” Karen says. Windows along the top of the room let

in natural light, further accentuating the nautical feel of the tile. On the other side of the room is the entryway to the master closet. The clothes are set into individual closet cabinets, each with mirrored faces, giving a sense of infinite depth for the space. Opposite the master bedroom are two guest bedrooms, one of which has twin beds, perfect for when some of their seven grandkids come to visit. The half bath on this floor particularly stands out as what Karen calls her “blingy” bathroom: Sparkled grout is used around the hexagonal floor tiles, and the glittery wallpaper features golden trees from floor to ceiling. Entertainment destinations
The stairs to the lower level originally had spindle railings that were visually obtrusive. Franklin Glass was brought in to install glass panels in place of the old spindles, which help to significantly open the space. It’s clear from taking the first step in the lower level that this is where much of the entertaining and recreation happens when smlhomemaga zine .com 4 5

people visit. Here, a pool table is overseen by a painting that depicts some of history’s most famous U.S. presidents socializing together. Elsewhere on the walls are framed replicas of the original patent drawings for various aspects of the game of pool, such as the table itself and the cues. The six-arm light above the pool table is a replica based on classic pool table fixtures popular in the early 1900s. Adjacent to the pool table, the Weinhardts removed a wall that had led into a sizable storage room. They’ve turned it into a media lounge; it’s essentially movienight central when family is visiting. A multi-sectioned L-shaped couch fills nearly two full walls, and built-in studio surround sound makes this a great place to enjoy a show. On the other side of the lower level is a seating area and another fireplace, which was converted from woodburning to gas. A bar area, designed by Dan DeNeal of DeNeal Cabinets, is tucked into one side of the main room, with some added space thanks to a wall being removed during the renovation. Doing that “bought ourselves a lot more usable space,” John notes. The house’s third guest room—the only one with lake views and thus the one most visitors “fight” over—is down a short hallway with a completely refurbished full bath next to it. “This bedroom is the one everyone wants to stay in,” Karen says. Nearby is a workout room and a large storage area.

The lower level spills into a backyard that, like much of the rest of the house, was completely redone. With work done by Mark Maslow and his company Southern Landscape Group, a cozy patio area was built, flanked by mulch and small garden areas. “Mark and his team were great guys. We love them, and with my love of landscaping, we’re going to be lifelong partners with them,” Karen says. A long paver path was added down to the boathouse, which sits next to a scenic weeping willow tree. The boathouse has a
floating dock for their Sea-Doo, and there’s a covered slip for their tritoon, plus a sitting area. The Weinhardts have plans to change the landscaping in the front yard in the near future, while also working on the deck and some other aspects to fine-tune their home. And, perhaps, they will be blessed with a year that isn’t like 2020 and will be able to better share their space and their new lives with more of their family. ✦

This is what lake culture represents; to gather around a table is a gesture of warmth and inclusion. Choosing a dining table can be daunting with the vast array of available options. Even so, there are a few things to consider before you begin your search. How many people do you anticipate hosting? Along with room size, this will determine the shape and length of the table. Perfect squares are ideal for small families and may work well for a smallish dining room. In terms of length, a 48-inch table will seat four comfortably, a 60-inch table will seat six, and a 72-inch long table will seat eight. This calculation also translates to a round table’s diameter and the number of people it will comfortably accommodate, but round or oval tables tend to be the most versatile. Without corners, you can squeeze in a few more guests. If you anticipate needing to adapt your table to the size of your gathering, whether you opt for four-sided or round, choose a table with an insert, which will quickly change the size of the table to suit the intimacy or festivity of the occasion.
Once you determine size needs, it’s time to move on to the fun part. This style overview runs the gamut from classic to unique, and although this rundown isn’t exhaustive, we hope these ideas can serve as inspiration. You might just see some of yourself in one or more of the style categories below. Which description best fits you? The traditionalist
You love holidays, family meals and all the trappings. You have an appreciation for creature comforts, Mother Nature, and the craftsmanship that goes into woodwork, and you want a dining arrangement that can stand the test of time in both style and function. In a rustic spirit, you could choose a pine, hickory or thick cedar table, possibly even made from reclaimed wood. This type of table works best paired with chairs and other pieces that match in color and style, or maybe with metal accents to prevent a pairing that is too monochromatic.
WHATEVER YOU CHOOSE, MAY YOUR TABLE BE AN EXTENSION OF YOUR SOUL, AN INVITATION FOR BOTH PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL NOURISHMENT, AND A MEETING PLACE FOR KINDRED SPIRITS.

Farmhouse is another cozy and classic style to consider. Understated and inviting, it won’t compete with other objects in the room. For a creative touch, consider color contrasts with some paint. Painting only the legs or only the top of the accompanying chair is an interesting way to pull in other hues in the room. Farmhouse can work for a modern American aesthetic, as well as French country, and boasts a simple beauty when paired with florals and antiques. For a natural wood look that is a bit more sleek and formal, opt for an American Colonial tavern top. Popular hues are walnut, cherry and tiger maple. If you like the simplicity of American Colonial, but wish to give it a bit of oomph, get creative with the seating by adding a bold and modern upholstery print to a chair seat. Parsons chairs are another great way to play with upholstery patterns or add an extra element of padded comfort without being too matchymatch with the wood. Go minimal

If you’re the type of person who prefers to open spaces clear of clutter—reason being, it allows for more time and energy for what truly matters to you—then you may desire no-frills functionality in your dining table. Consider the simple shapes, clean lines and skinny legs of the minimalist style. Such tables and chairs have no ornamentation or extra doodads—just unembellished surfaces and straight legs supporting the structure. If you want a look that’s not quite so stripped down to the bare minimum of contemporary minimalism, you could give Scandinavian a try. After all, Scandinavian countries report happy people and lots of leisure time, so they must be doing something right! With clean lines and light stains, Scandinavian dining tables are modest in appearance, yet offer a bit more heft and shape variation. is intentionally distressed. The wood can be painted (chalk paint recommended) and then sanded down to match or accent an existing color palette. This can complement a variety of vibes, including Bohemian or antique farmhouse ambiance. Another style that is timeless but undeniably cool is a pedestal table. With a round top and one supporting central leg, a pedestal table can suit a variety of dining room styles. Pair it with Chinese Chippendale chairs for a transitional, flexible feel, or sleek modern saddleback dining chairs with metallic legs for a more industrial look. Another suggestion is a trestle dining table, a throwback to the Middle Ages with a modern take. Perfect for large gatherings, you can pair it with stripes or buffalo checks for a casual vibe, complete with benches on either side, or pair it with wicker chairs and an oceanhued color palette for a waterfront feel. Whatever you choose, may your table be an extension of your soul, an invitation for both physical and emotional nourishment, and a meeting place for kindred spirits. Now let the feast begin! ✦

veryone hopes they'll never be victims of a natural disaster or other emergency that affects our homes and families, but unfortunately this is never a “never” proposition. So it just makes sense to think about emergency management in advance, and to prudently plan and prepare. Simply watching the news makes it clear what types of things can befall folks unexpectedly. Fires, floods, hurricanes and other severe weather are clearly among the most common disasters. smlhomemaga zine .com 57

The experts at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provide a starting point by encouraging everyone to have an emergency kit or “go bag.” Go bag contents will vary, of course, with family composition and individual needs. It is important that everyone know its location and that items which have expiration dates are periodically freshened. These days nearly everyone has a cellphone, and it is key for getting and transmitting information. But don't rely on it as your primary flashlight or radio, as that consumes battery power you should reserve for calls to relatives or authorities. The ability to quickly grab a “go bag” on the way out of the house is important if a fire forces rapid evacuation. Wildfires like those that ravage the West are not common here, but electrical malfunctions, cooking incidents, and careless smoking and fireplace incidents can all cause a home to become quickly engulfed. Have fire extinguishers mounted near your kitchen, garage, workshop, dock or other fire-prone areas and check them regularly for the “green” indication on their charge-level gauges. Wood-burning fireplace flues should be checked FEMA EMERGENCY for proper draw before the KIT MUST-HAVES first fire of the season. To Flashlight and batteries do this, twist a few sheets of newspaper into a “torch” Cell phone charger shape, hold under the First aid kit open flue with a gloved Battery-operated radio hand, then light and make Soap, antiseptic wipes, sure the smoke is drawn pain reliever of choice, upward before lighting the anti-diarrhea tablets fire's kindling. Support A few day's supply of your local firefighter units prescription medications with annual donations Toilet paper and perhaps gifts of time and talent. They always Subsistence food and need volunteers for myriad water (don't forget about pets) tasks beyond actual call response. Pair of pliers Another common homeNotepad and pen damage issue is flooding Dust/virus masks from broken pipes. Be alert for the sound of running Reading glasses if needed water that is not intended. Cash Washing machine hoses are a frequent failure point, so replace them once they show any signs of aging. A wise precaution is shutting off the home's main water valve when leaving for a weekend or longer. Those living on lakes or waterways should stay alert to any predictions of high water and prepare boats and other equipment at their docks for potential flooding. Elevate water-sensitive stored items, raise or tie off boat and PWCs, and shut down electricity to areas that might flood. If damaging winds are predicted, dock and patio furniture need to be secured or stored indoors to keep from being blown away, into the water or crashing into other things. Also tie down water toys such as kayaks and tow toys. Hanging tubes have even been known to swirl into lift switch levers and activate the motors with boat-damaging results. Post-flood, be patient and wait for water to recede, then venture out for clean-up wearing gloves and good-gripping shoes (not your normal summer-weekend-at-the-dock flip-flops!) as S m i t h M o u n t a i n L a ke H O M E 2 0 2 1
surfaces may be slippery with sludge. Owning, borrowing or renting a power washer greatly speeds the cleanup of decking and high-water lines on dock house walls and almost anything else that got exposed to floodwater slime and debris. Turn the dock power back on only after you're confident the water will stay below decking level. While too much water can create an emergency, so can not enough. Water service interruptions are most common to families who depend on wells for their fresh water. For them especially, keeping a few gallons of potable water, freshened every year or so, in suitable bottles that can provide water for drinking, teeth brushing and cooking is a good idea. Some even keep larger containers hidden away in case they're needed for a temporary toilet flush or two. Not all emergencies come from outside the home, of course. Plan for medical situations by
making sure the children in your lives know how to access a 911 operator and what information to provide. Grandchildren may have that memorized for home but need coaching and practice for when they are visiting. Authorities emphasize that calling 911 for suspected stroke or heart attack is far superior to self-transporting the victim to the hospital because trained personnel get involved earlier. Importantly, ambulance crews can monitor vitals and communicate with the destination hospital staff while underway, allowing them to prepare as needed. Bottom line is the old Boy Scout motto: Be Prepared! What that entails will vary with each family's living circumstances and needs, but thinking ahead about emergency preparedness can make all the difference if and when disaster strikes. ✦

olt Stevens always wanted to have a home on the water. But that’s probably of little surprise once you learn that he’s retired from the U.S. Navy, after a career that took him across the nation and sailing around the world. “We’re boaters,” he says. “We like to go boating; the kids grew up on boats and so much else pertaining to the water.” His dream was to be able to walk out the back door, push a button and take off on a boating adventure. Forget trailing to a boat ramp, and forget dealing with saltwater, which can be hard on a vessel. The fresh water of Smith Mountain Lake— its beautiful landscapes, leisurely lifestyle and ample amenities—beckoned his wife and him. There was just one problem: Aside from being on the water, Colt and his wife, Cindy, didn’t really know what they wanted in a house.

ure, they wanted great views of the lake, and the idea of being able to live completely on one level so that they could age in place was enticing, but the details of their desires were absent. Floor plans, materials, color schemes, fixtures, landscaping—all of these were things that they were going to need help with. “We had some discussions about style tastes, but they let me get really creative and have almost complete design freedom,” says Zach Baldridge of True Custom Inc., the builder whom the Stevenses hired to create their forever home. They were introduced to him during their property search by their Realtor, Teresa Criner of Wainwright & Co. “I probably was too excited about the design and seeing it happen to be nervous about much,” Baldridge says. The finished product, which sits close to the mouth of the Gills Creek Channel and has stunningly expansive views of the water from several spots indoors, is, undoubtedly, a custom creation. 62
Of art and architecture
About 95 percent of people who hire Baldridge come to him with floor plans, but every seven to 10 years, he gets a couple like the Stevenses, who offer the opportunity of building with a clean slate. In fact, Baldridge built a house a couple of doors down from the Stevens home, and when their lot came on the market, it was Baldridge who told them about it. The Stevenses, who were living in Williamsburg and doing most of their boating on the James River, had been looking primarily in the Huddleston area to relocate. Having views of Smith Mountain was on their radar, so when Baldridge called them in 2017 to tell them about this lot, farther from the dam than they had hoped, they were hesitant but willing to explore the possibility. The three-quarter-acre lot offered relatively flat land and about 180 feet of shoreline. Best of all, because Baldridge himself recommended the property to them, the couple knew that he was going to be comfortable creating and building in this space. “This is all Zach’s vision. His brain works in amazing ways that I can’t comprehend,” Colt says. S m i t h M o u n t a i n L a ke H O M E 2 0 2 1

“He basically built the home specifically for this lot, to maximize the view and everything. And he threw in a few twists to make it different.” “We don’t like cookie-cutter, so to have a designer who’s unique was wonderful,” Cindy says. “You can have a custom home, but if the builder has three pre-planned options to choose from, then how custom really is it?” Work began on the Stevenses’ new home in 2018. “Having such freedom to openly design a home like this doesn't happen often,” says Baldridge, who graduated from college with an art degree, which is perhaps a bit unusual for someone in his profession. But that keen artistic eye, coupled with his long experience in the building industry to match function with flair, paid off for the Stevenses. It led to the creation of features such as a long soaring roof line and a wall fitted with panels of tall glass. So much of it involved flourishes that might otherwise be hard to envision into reality. “I created the land layout in my computer CAD file, to make sure that the house fit on the lot, while still grabbing all the views possible,” Baldridge says. The Stevenses sent him some clippings 64
of things they liked in home magazines, which helped spur some important discussions about various features of the house. And throughout the building process, Cindy was able to drive to the lake almost weekly to see the progress—to see first-hand the collaboration between the cabinet subcontractors and the flooring or lighting crew, to answer questions, and to spot-check certain elements, such as making sure that doorways were 36 inches rather than 32 inches. “Her visits were helpful as questions were answered easily, but more than that, her visits often were an exciting unveiling of some new completed part,” Baldridge says. “This house was a challenge to visualize, so as different parts were completed, the vision of the home became realized.” Function and fashion
The Stevenses have two children: one in Virginia Beach and the other just north of Roanoke in Buchanan, as well as several grandkids. And while Smith Mountain Lake might not be quite as centrally located between the two as their former home in Williamsburg was, the couple still wanted to make sure that the house was big enough to accommodate the whole family coming S m i t h M o u n t a i n L a ke H O M E 2 0 2 1
together for the holidays or for a weekend of summer fun. The living spaces were created to be open, allowing for everyone to be comfortable, even during large family gatherings. That openness also allows visitors to see straight through the house to the windows at each end as they approach the front door. And the door itself is an exquisite piece; it’s a custom metal front door that was designed and built from scratch at Baldridge’s shop and follows the angular design theme of the home. The great room has tall airy ceilings, and the ceiling fans are made of aircraft propellers, conjured from Colt’s interest in aviation and his Navy service on the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. The room includes East Asian decorations, a nod to Colt’s time spent in Japan. The wall on the lake side of the house has a massive configuration of 10 windows that stretch the height of the room, allowing for lake and sky to come together in picturesque fashion. The wall is also painted in a blue accent color, further complementing the lake setting. Along that wall sits the eight-seat dining room table, perfect for fitting the Stevenses’ immediate family. Cleverly, the stylish light fixture that hangs over the table looks razor-thin in profile, so as not to obstruct the windows, but provides a pleasing and vibrant aura when sitting down to eat. The floor is made of light hickory wood that enhances the room’s brightness, and the directions that the boards were laid was very deliberate in order to create a visual transition from room to room and toward the lake. smlhomemaga zine .com 65

The Stevenses said they want to be able to age in place in this house, so the 2,000-square-foot main floor has not just the great room, but also the kitchen, master bedroom and bathroom, another full bathroom, a sewing room, a mud room, an office/wine room combination (if nothing else, an interesting conversation starter during pandemic Zoom calls) and one of two garages. From the main level, the couple are able to walk out onto the deck, where Baldridge conducted more of his ironwork magic, creating unique pillars as well as railings with glass inserts for seamless lake views. This iron design is carried over to the interior stairway railing, too. Off the great room, the 19-by-19-foot kitchen— packed with abundant cabinets, oil-rubbed bronze faucets and hardware, stainless steel appliances and modern light fixtures—is a showstopper. Lightly colored brick is used in place of a more traditional tile backsplash, and the brown granite countertops play into the cabinetry perfectly.
The kitchen is as functional as it is fashionable: There are two dishwashers as well as three ovens—gas, electric, convection—and Colt says “all three will be rolling during the holidays.” Padded seats pull up to the island, and perhaps most resourcefully, there is a single foldable coldwater faucet positioned over the stovetop so that pots can be filled in that spot and not have to be transported from the sink to the cooking surface. Next to the kitchen is the mud room, which features natural light and a large closet. Connected to it is a garage, affectionately dubbed “her” garage, since it has mostly Cindy’s things in it. Directly below it and accessible from the side of the house is “his” garage, where boat trailers are stored, tools abound and even a clamp and hoist sit connected to a massive I-beam, so Colt can remove boat motors or do other repair work. Back on the main floor, a hallway off the great room leads to Cindy’s sewing room. When her kids were younger, she made a lot of their clothes S m i t h M o u n t a i n L a ke H O M E 2 0 2 1

and costumes herself, so having a craft room was important. She can sew and enjoy nice views of the water, and the room has a Murphy bed in case any extra sleeping space is needed. The main guest bathroom is nearby and has a full bathtub, something that Cindy specifically requested because the master bathroom doesn’t have a tub, and she wanted to easily be able to clean up the grandkids on the main level, if necessary. The Stevenses’ master bedroom is spacious, with a modern design and hardwood floors. One request they made of Baldridge was to have the deck extend around to the master bedroom, so the couple can walk directly outside. Both this bedroom and the kitchen have the luxury of heated floors. The master bathroom carries some elements from the kitchen, including the countertop and cabinet stylings (save for swapping out the kitchen’s dark hardware with brushed nickel in the bathroom). There are his-and-hers sinks, and the shower is fully tiled. They added a piece of glass to the shower wall facing the exterior window to help usher in some additional natural light. Just off the bathroom is the walk-in closet as well as the main-level’s washer and dryer, a strategy intended to make the laborious task of washing clothes that much more convenient.

A place all their own
While the main level of the home is ideal for the Stevenses, the downstairs level is designed for their family members. “When we travel, we always want our own space,” Cindy says. “Our intent was to have a space, so that when we have company, they can do what they want. They’re not infringing on us, and we’re not tip-toeing around.” The stairway spills into a sitting area downstairs, and a “kids’ corner,” packed with games and other toys, is nestled under the staircase. A bank of windows lets in lots of light and offers full views of the water. There’s a kitchenette with a microwave, selfcleaning oven, coffee pot and refrigerator for family members and other guests to use. The stainless-steel appliances and dark cabinets are punctuated in color by a maroon wall sign with orange lettering that simply says “Enter Sandman”—a reference to which any Virginia Tech fan will immediately be drawn. There are a handful of rooms on this level, including a media room with two queen Murphy beds; the “Sunflower Room,” which is a brightly colored spare bedroom with a full bath; and the secondary

master bedroom, with its own walk-in closet and full bathroom. Throughout, there’s a clean, simple and stylish look to the interior design elements. There’s also a mechanical room with a washer and dryer, as well as some additional storage space. Outside, the boat-side view of the home, which is one of Colt’s favorite parts about it, hammers home the uniqueness that Baldridge put into the design. It’s easy to see that the living spaces are highlighted by the many windows, the ironwork accents the structure, and the gables have an asymmetrical flair, all helping this home to be affectionately dubbed “The Avengers House.” “When you see it in the front, you have absolutely no idea that all of this is in the back. It’s very unassuming,” Cindy says. The landscaping, too, is as creative as the home itself, with well-laid-out pathways leading to an inviting fire pit and to the sizable boat house, where Colt keeps the beloved day cruiser that he’s had for more than three decades. Hardwood mulch lines many areas around the house, and colorful nascent plants dot the grounds. “It’s not your normal house,” Colt says, “and I don’t mind that. We like unique.” “We just keep looking around saying that we can’t believe this is ours and that we don't have to turn the keys in 10 days from now or worry about a deposit,” Cindy says of the beautiful property. It’s all theirs. ✦

SPECIAL WAYS TO CELEBRATE A MILESTONE BIRTHDAY AT HOME B Y A LY S S A M E R C A DA N T E
7 2
S m i t h M o u n t a i n L a ke H O M E 2 0 2 1
While every birthday should be celebrated, it’s the big milestones—one, 16, 21 and basically any birthday with a zero at the end—that we hope to make especially memorable. Whether you’re planning a celebration for yourself or someone else, we’ve put together some ideas that are sure to make it one to remember for years to come. Personalize the party
A house on the lake is the perfect location to throw an epic shindig. The beautiful views alone provide natural decor, which means you may not have to go crazy with a lot of party decorations. However, balloons feel like a must for any party. If using helium balloons, stake them to the ground with golf tees, lining the driveway or throughout your yard. Make your own balloon garland or arch using balloon strip tape (found at most party supply stores and on Amazon), removable adhesive hooks and latex balloons. A balloon wall can be another, easier option and can also serve as a great backdrop for photos; just place a removeable glue dot on the side of each balloon and arrange however you like. The jumbo number balloons displaying the honoree’s age are always a hit as well. Other simple decor ideas include flowers, streamers, natural garland and framed or enlarged photos of the guest of honor. Speaking of the guest of honor, consider ways to really personalize the party. Organize pictures of the honoree and construct them into the numeric shape of the age they are turning. Imagine walking into a room and seeing 50 years’ worth of your favorite moments displayed on a wall as a focal point for your celebration. Photos can also be strung with clothespins on twine or string lights, hung from the ceiling with ribbon, or even made into confetti that can be sprinkled atop tables and countertops. A current trend among parents is to create a personalized “favorite things” chalkboard for baby’s first birthday, highlighting things such as favorite food, word, toys and the like—but why not create one for any age? It’s probably more interesting to learn about an 80-year-old’s likes, hobbies and favorite pastimes. You could even create a large poster mimicking the front page of a newspaper featuring a photo of the honoree and items like interesting facts about the year they were born, what the top headlines were, who the president was, and prices of various items such as gas, milk, movie tickets or a car. Rather than say “80 years old,” opt for “80 years young.” The honoree could then take this home as a cherished keepsake. If turning 30, 40 or even 50, reminisce back to those younger years. What were some of your favorite things to do with your best friends? Recreate the magic you felt then and take a group of friends ice skating, roller blading or bowling. Dress in styles from the 60s, 70s or 80s to really go back in time. Or, stay in and have a good old-fashioned slumber party complete with manis, pedis and movies from earlier decades. At-home spreads
A crowd pleaser for any age (21 or older, of course) is an athome wine or whiskey tasting. Rather than a gift, ask guests to bring a bottle of their favorite wine or spirit to share. Be sure to provide food as well! Again, the simplest things can be the best. Is the birthday honoree a pizza lover? Find a good, clear photo of their face, make copies, cut out their face, order pizzas, and place their face on the front of the box: simple, yet hilarious. You could even go so far as to have guests wear white, chef hats and faux mustaches. Maybe the birthday queen or king is obsessed
with tacos. Setting up a taco bar is both easy and inexpensive, and can feed many people. Or, dedicate an entire table to a huge spread of nachos for guests to nibble on. Start with covering the table with foil. Next, add tortilla chips, meat of choice, cheese, and any other toppings you want. You could also leave the fixings separated in bowls and scatter the chips, meat, and cheese around that so guests can add as many or as little toppings as they prefer. And don’t forget about cake: One is never too old, or young, to indulge in cake on their birthday. Be sure to find out what the honoree’s favorite flavor of cake is and add a fun, festive topper. Etsy has some incredibly cute and unique cake toppers featuring mini balloons, glittery digits, and sayings such as “Made in 1971” or “Thirty Fine.” Also on trend: Rather than cutting a cake into slices, give each guest a glass, and have them scoop a piece of cake using the glass and eating directly out of it—no knife or plates needed!
Celebrating at a distance
Don’t miss out on a milestone if you are practicing social distancing. Throwing a birthday parade is a great way to have an epic celebration if gatherings still make you uncomfortable. Send invites to friends and family members letting them know of a day and timeframe to drive by and honk, send well wishes or even drop a gift. Create a larger-than-life personalized yard sign for the honoree that lets the whole world know there’samilestonebirthdaytocelebrate.Thereareevencompaniesinthe area that make these and will come set them up for you. (Check out Card My Yard Lynchburg or Sign Gypsies Roanoke for some fun inspiration.) Set up a canopy tent in your driveway and put out some tables filled with treats and to-go bags that your drive-by guests can easily take with them. Put together a video tribute from those who are unable to attend. Ask friends and family members to send a short clip of themselves wishing the celebrant a happy birthday and put the videos together using a free app on your phone or one of several online websites, such as Tribute, that make it super easy. A sweet collection of personal messages from one’s family and friends is the ultimate gift that will last a lifetime. No matter the age, there are many simple yet memorable ways to have a birthday celebration that will be talked about for years to come. ✦

GARDEN weed control
ELIMINATING PESKY WEEDS
the natural way BY MEGAN JANSEN
E
nvision a lovely home, flanked by beautiful landscaping with colorful flower beds, a smattering of shrubbery and the greenery of the lawn, and maybe even a vegetable garden out back. What makes this scene so perfect? The absence of those little nasties: weeds. Of course, you can dutifully pull out the offenders, ideally after a good, ground-soaking rain. But that's dirty, hard work that must be done over and over since new weed seeds are constantly germinating.
74
S m i t h M o u n t a i n L a ke H O M E 2 0 2 1
Most of us prefer the pretty, tidy look. So how can we avoid the back-breaking weed pulling and avoid using harmful chemicals? Here are some more natural ideas. Smother weed seeds with cornmeal. Corn gluten meal can be sprinkled on the garden to prevent weed seeds, and any other seeds, from germinating before they emerge from the soil. It’s essentially weed birth control. Just be sure your garden’s plants are up and growing before doing this. This procedure won’t kill established weeds, but it will prevent new weed seeds from growing. Use mulch. Cover planted areas with 2 to 3 inches of mulch to prevent seeds that blow into the beds from coming in contact with the soil where they can germinate. Mulch will also prevent any weed seeds already in the soil from getting the needed sunlight to sprout. Mulch helps retain moisture in the soil around plants; it looks nice, and eventually breaks down and enriches the soil. Install a physical weed barrier. Cover current weeds and prevent new ones from sprouting by covering them with landscape fabric or newspaper (use only the black and white parts, not the shiny, colorful inserts that have harmful inks). Wet the soil, then lay down a thick layer of newspaper, and wet that thoroughly. Next cover it with 2 to 3 inches of mulch. The landscape fabric or newspaper will smother the current weeds and keep sunlight from activating weed seeds already in the soil. If you don’t want to go the mulch route for the top layer, other materials like stones or rubber matting crafted to look like mulch can be put on top of the barrier, and these will not need to be replenished as frequently as mulch. Use vinegar. Vinegar applied to weeds from a spray bottle or with a brush will kill any and everything, so use it cautiously near plants you want to keep. It is best to apply it in the early morning when there is no wind which might contaminate other plants. Pay attention to the weather; you don’t want rain to wash it off before it works or onto other plants. Sun will activate vinegar’s weed-killing properties. You might have to reapply the vinegar to get the desired effect. There is also a super-strength agricultural vinegar available at garden centers that might do this job faster. Use boiling water. Be sure to wear long pants and
closed-toed shoes and have hot pads in your hands for this procedure. Tough weeds with long tap roots may require 2 or 3 applications. Use salt. Put a pinch of salt at the base of each weed. This will get diluted during the next couple of rainfalls. Salt makes the soil sterile for several months, so use it with caution and only in small amounts, avoiding other plants and grass. Use herbicidal soap. Make your own by mixing equal parts vinegar, salt and dish soap and put the mixture in a spray bottle. This will kill whatever it touches, so be careful when using it, and be aware of where the run-off will go. Get a weed torch. This long-handled instrument is especially good for killing weeds between cracks in a stone walkway, patio or wall. You don’t have to burn up the weeds, only make them wilt; water inside the plant cells turns to steam making the cells explode and die. This device cannot be used on poison ivy or other poisonous plants because the poison oils can be released into the air and potentially reach a person’s eyes or lungs. Whatever method of natural weed control you choose, you’ll know that you are doing the environment a favor. That’s your payback—along with the weed-free landscape beds you hope to achieve. ✦

eading to a vacation house for weekend getaways or months-long trips provides a chance to live a more relaxed lifestyle that offers entertainment right outside the door; boating, water sports, fishing, hiking and outdoor dining all come easy. After a week of work and busy schedules, the prospect of this change of pace entices everyone to get in the car. Being prepared allows the down time to start sooner and alleviates the dreary feeling that you are schlepping things from one house to another all the time. “Let’s Get Organized” is a favorite family saying in our household, and when you have two houses to keep, it is a necessity. When we bought our lake house, we quickly realized that organization is essential. Attention to a few routines and specifics ahead of time means more relaxing with a good book and fewer last-minute trips to the grocery because you thought you had ketchup. Try these tips and tricks to make easing in and out of a second-home visit a simple routine.

Be prepared
My husband devised a clever solution when we first acquired our lake house. He designated a heavy canvas tote bag “THE LAKE CARRIER,” and in it goes anything that needs to travel to the house on the next trip. You might personalize this bag by having the address or the nickname you use for your getaway place embroidered on the bag. This bag sits in a spot by the back door, and everything that is destined for the other house collects in it. New batteries for the smoke alarms, a kitchen gadget to replace the one that broke, the dishtowel that mistakenly ended up in someone’s suitcase, and my book club book that arrived midweek all pile in that bag which gets loaded in the car before the luggage and groceries. Stock the pantry and fridge
The best strategy for stocking the pantry and fridge is to find several effortless meals, snacks and appetizers each season that you can pull together in a flash. We call them “family medleys” since they are usually spiced up versions of common menu items. Keep the pantry ingredients for these recipes on hand along with canned goods like black beans and salsas as well as dried fruits and nuts for quick fixes. Pick up the perishable items for these meals when you shop for your stay. Bread stores well in the freezer; buy a few extra loaves so you have them when you need to make a simple lunch or round out a dinner.
side says “Lake House Needs” and the left side says “Town House Needs.” On it we list pantry items and basic cleaning products we should replenish. Meals are planned on the bottom third of the list, and to the side of each meal, we list the ingredients we should buy. Since we shop at farmers markets when they are in season, and often decide part of the meal when we see what is available, meal planning is more of a wide-open suggestion list. Find a system that works for you. Don’t drown in the laundry
Unless the washer or dryer isn’t working, it is much easier to do the laundry before you leave each house. Most of the time, the last day at the lake is a good morning to start. Ask family members and guests to pile all their dirty towels and sheets in the laundry room. Hauling it back and forth is a heavy chore and just puts off what must be done. Start with the towels. Finish your coffee and throw in a load. Starting with the towels is motivating because they are easy to wash and dry, and when you begin folding and putting them back in the baths, the house seems to gain some immediate order. While the towels run, clean the kitchen and bath sinks and wipe down all the countertops. Load the dishwasher and get that running. If there are a few towels from the last guest or your spouse’s shower, leave those hanging out to dry and you can get to them next time. The arrival
Keep a list
Our grocery store list always has two columns and until everything on it is purchased, it goes back and forth with us in the lake bag. Every few weeks we make a new one. The right
Open the doors and windows for some air, and if it is warm enough, leave them open to let the breeze inside. Check the thermostat to see if you need to adjust it for the weather. Carry in all the bags from the car and put them directly in the rooms

where they belong. Place your “lake bag” in the kitchen, unload all the items you have collected for this house, and put them where they belong. Wipe out the fridge if you didn’t get to that when you last left, and as you unload the cooler, take the time to organize the food into the fridge by types—produce, deli meats and cheeses, fish and poultry—so you can see where everything is for easy meal prep later. This gives you a chance to notice anything you might have forgotten. Add it to the list. Situate the pantry dry goods and walk around the house to tidy any scattered items that were not put in their proper place before you packed and left. Water those thirsty plants. Succulents do great with long bouts of no water. Keep it handy
Kitchens and baths take a toll from active lifestyles. In the kitchen, stashing a light broom and dustpan close by makes a mid-day or late evening sweeping quick. The floor gets crunchy from all those snacks people grab after exercising, and meal prep always leaves a few tidbits scattered on the floor. Keep a clean sponge in a holder on the side of the sink to wipe down cabinet doors and counters. In the baths, disposable cleaning wipes in the cabinet make the sink, faucet and counters sparkle quickly when you pop in to check on them. The departure
To get the house ready so you can head home, first organize any dirty laundry that is left. Fold the clean sheets and store them in the closet of the bedrooms. Sometimes the sheets stay on the beds, so those should be made. Just wash them or swap for clean sheets when you come back if new guests will be using them. If the kids are coming back to the same rooms, those can be used for another weekend. Next, pack any clothing and toiletries to go on the road with you. Lastly, head to the kitchen. Leftovers go well in glass jars and storage containers; they make an easy supper when you arrive at your home base exhausted. Box good cheeses, vegetables, fruits and meats in the cooler with the leftovers. Store any food you leave behind in glass jars in the cabinets or in the fridge or freezer to discourage pests. Leaving for a month or two
If you are not returning for several weeks or more, you need to make sure the house can safely stay alone. Leaving for long stretches of time requires some thought. What temperature should the house be? In winter, it is best to leave it at least 55 degrees and turn off the water at the house cut off in case of a S m i t h M o u n t a i n L a ke H O M E 2 0 2 1
leak. Make sure all storm windows and doors are secure and all outside gear like canoes, kayaks and bikes are stored in a basement, garage or shed. Boats should be covered, and winterized when the temperatures drop below freezing. Even in summer months, storms can cause debris from flying damage, so make sure everything outside is secure. Lake house instructions
When letting friends or family use your vacation home, a list of instructions and house rules keeps problems at bay. Keep one laminated copy at the house, and mail or email another to them in advance of their visit, along with directions to the house and where to find the keys. On the instructions, welcome them to your home, provide your cell phone numbers for questions or emergencies, then review the basics of the house systems. Guests need to know things like where to find the breaker box, how to use appliances and grills, where you store firewood for the firepit, and how to use the thermostat. If your home has a hot tub or pool, those need to be covered in detail. Remember to include where keys can be found to boats,
garages and any items you lock to the dock such as kayaks. Suggest that they bring their own towels and sheets so they don’t have to do laundry on their last day of vacation. Let them know where to take the trash and recycle. Finally, offer suggestions for restaurants, fishing spots, good hikes, miniature golf and movie theaters. For many of us, owning two homes has many advantages. It is not just a change of scenery; two different lifestyles and two groups of friends provides a nice balance even if it means sacrificing some travel far and wide due to cost. The appeal of changing your surroundings is what makes the planning of packing up and traveling to another home pleasurable. The biggest benefit by far is the neighbors and friends you meet, connections not possible in a vacation week. We enjoy meeting up via boat parties or outside for drinks. In getting to know other families, you can also learn things—such as these secondhome hacks. So next time you are sipping a beer on the dock with friends, ask them to share their secrets for comfortable, efficient second-home living. ✦

Fly me to the moon Tree swing. Sometimes simple is better,
and an old-fashioned tree swing with a wooden seat or tire swing could be just what you’re looking for to add fun to your yard. The best trees for the job are well-established hardwoods, like oaks, maples and sycamores. A strong branch with a relatively flat spot beneath it is ideal. You’ll want to place the rope far enough away from the trunk so the swing doesn’t hit the trunk and damage it (or injure the rider). Test a branch’s strength by throwing a rope over the spot where you plan to install the swing and pull down gradually, adding the full weight of your body to be sure the branch responds well. A braided polyester rope is your best bet, as it holds up well to the elements and has little give, and rubber tubing along the spot where the tree and rope meet will save your tree from friction damage that could compromise it. A long rope from a high branch will give you a brisk ride, and a shorter rope and lower branch a correspondingly lesser flight, so consider the ages of your riders. Tutorials on YouTube will show you how to tie the knot and slide it up to the tree limb without leaving the ground, or contact a tree company to leave the install to the experts. Spider web swing. A spider web swing looks like it sounds—a connected web of durable ropes creating a flat surface that more than one person can ride on at a time, upping the fun factor. These swings are trendy, so be sure to research your purchase, as quality levels vary widely. One option is the Play Platoon spider web swing, which is highly rated on Amazon; it has a 40-inch diameter, which can hold two adults or up to four children. The $90 swing has a 600-lb capacity, and its durable material allows for it to be left outside during the off season. Zipline. While not a swing, a zipline is another option for flying through the air, especially for the daredevils in your family. If you have two trees on your property on a direct path toward each other, a zipline can provide hours of fun for kids and adults. The trees should have trunks at least 12 inches in diameter, have stable roots and be disease-free. Measure the distance between the trees to determine your needed length, as zipline kits vary from 50 to 500 feet. In addition to stable trunks, you’ll need a clearance smlhomemaga zine .com 81

Rock me to sleep Porch or dock swing. If you have a covered porch or dock area and want a spot to read, watch the sunset or take a nap, a porch swing could be your best bet. While a traditional-sized porch swing can fit into a smaller area, bed swings have become a popular choice. Larger than a traditional porch swing, they come in twin and double-bed size, accommodating a mattress covered in outdoor-friendly fabric. Bed swings can be custom made by Magnolia Porch Swings, via Etsy, or various furniture retailers. Expect to spend $500 and up, depending on size and options. For a traditional two-seater porch swing, expect to spend about half that cost for a budget model. For those with advanced DIY skills, plans are available on the internet, and could save big bucks. If the swing bed is on a screened porch, expect that it would become the favorite sleeping spot for someone in your family. Before you commit to a swing, ensure your ceiling or deck is sturdy enough to support it. Only a joist can safely hold the weight of a swing with people on it, and if you question your set up, have a contractor evaluate it. For a bed swing, follow the manufacturer’s instructions exactly, and if purchasing your own chains, ropes or connectors (like S hooks), be sure they are rated for outdoor use and have a capacity of 500 pounds or more. Tree pod. It goes by many names, but the tree pod, HugglePod or tree hammock is like a teepee suspended from a tree above the ground. It’s not meant for vigorous swinging, but does provide that lulling, rocking motion for its occupants, either to camp out or to find a quiet spot away from it all. If your property doesn’t have the right tree, stands are also sold to hold the pod in place off of the ground. Find a tree pod S m i t h M o u n t a i n L a ke H O M E 2 0 2 1
from HearthSong or Wayfair in many sizes, from one that holds a single person to an entire family. Hammock. A hammock is the ultimate in relaxation, and conjures images of long afternoons spent rocking in the shade. Many of today’s hammocks are made of synthetic, long-lasting rope and outdoor fabrics that stand the test of time. L.L. Bean and Nags Head Hammocks are two popular hammock sellers that have a loyal following, and you can expect to spend north of $150 for a quality model. A hammock stand in metal or wood ensures that a hammock can go anywhere you’d like—no trees required. Swings are pure enjoyment, and we could all use more recreational possibilities, especially those outside our own back door. If you find yourself pining for a swing but are overwhelmed by the installation, talk to a contractor. Many don’t advertise the service but would be willing to hang a swing for a fee, especially if they are doing a larger renovation job on the property. ✦

SHEET PAN GRILLED CHEESE
(Serves 4, easily doubled or tripled) Two baking sheets and a hot oven create a giant panini press, which makes grilled cheese for a crowd super easy and quick. If you are doubling or tripling the recipe, you need two baking sheets per batch of sandwiches. You can use two or three racks in one oven, and preheat two baking sheets stacked on one oven rack. The type of bread and cheese you use is entirely up to you. You can make basic white bread and American cheese sandwiches for young children. Add gourmet touches by providing ingredients like fancy cheeses and meats, roasted vegetables or thinly sliced apples, pears or peaches, layered in when you add the cheese. Spreads also add a unique touch. I especially like to add hot and sweet mustard or orange marmalade. Set out all the ingredients and allow your guests to make their own. When the baking sheet is full, pop it in the oven and let the magic happen! 1/2 cup butter 1/3 cup shredded Parmesan cheese 8 (3/4 ounce) slices American cheese 1 cup (4 ounces) shredded mild cheddar cheese 1/4 cup garlic and herb cheese spread 8 slices bakery sandwich bread (sourdough is my favorite) Position two 15 x 10 x 1-inch baking sheets on a rack in the middle of the oven and preheat to 450 degrees. Combine butter and Parmesan in a small bowl. Spread one side of each slice of bread evenly with about 1 tablespoon butter mixture. Once oven and pans are up to temperature, using oven mitts, carefully remove a preheated baking sheet from the oven and place 4 slices of bread, butter-side down, onto the hot baking pan (the bread should sizzle!). Top each with 2 slices American cheese and 1/4 cup shredded cheddar. Spread the non-buttered side of the remaining slices of bread with 1 tablespoon garlic and herb cheese spread. Place bread on top of the cheese, cheese spread-side down.
Remove the other hot pan from the oven and place it on top of the sandwiches. Using oven mitts and holding both baking sheets together, return to oven. Bake until bread is browned and cheese is melted, about 15 minutes. Carefully remove baking sheets from the oven and transfer sandwiches to a cutting board. Cut into pieces and serve.
WHOLE FOODS COPY-CAT LAYERED SALAD WITH OIL-FREE ORANGE GINGER DRESSING (Serves 4, easily doubled or tripled)
This salad made the rounds on Pinterest several years ago since it mimics a popular salad sold by Whole Foods. The colors are beautiful and the ingredients are uber-healthy. It is also perfect for entertaining or serving a crowd because you can prepare it in advance and the flavors improve with time. Add grilled chicken or shrimp for a one-dish meal. It keeps in the refrigerator for 5-6 days. FOR THE SALAD 1 cup uncooked quinoa 1 cup uncooked rice (I prefer basmati, but any rice will do) 1/2 cup finely chopped fresh parsley 1 1/2 cup diced green pepper (1 large) 1 cup shelled edamame 1 cup diced carrots (about 2) 1 1/2 cups diced red pepper (1 large) FOR THE DRESSING 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice 1 tablespoon fresh minced ginger 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar 1/3 cup apple juice 2/3 cup pure orange juice (fresh squeezed is recommended) In a medium-sized pot, add quinoa and 1 1/2 cups water. to 20 minutes, watching closely so it doesn’t burn. Do the same for the rice, but follow the directions on the package for the amount of water and cook time, as different kinds of rice have different cooking directions. While the grains cook, chop the vegetables and parsley. In a bowl or jar, whisk together the dressing ingredients and set aside. When all the ingredients are prepared, you can assemble individual layered salads, or layer it in a big glass bowl, or just mix them all in a large bowl along with the dressing. If you are making individual layered salads in plastic cups or mason jars, add in this order: 1/2 cup rice, 1/4 cup green pepper, 1/4 cup red pepper, 1/2 cup quinoa, 1/4 cup carrots, 2 tablespoons parsley, and 1/4 cup edamame per individual container. Pour 1/4 cup salad dressing on top. Screw a lid onto each jar, or cover cups with cling wrap or foil, and store in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

TOTAL HOME COMFORT YOU CAN COUNT ON
Being a chocolate chip cookie fanatic, I have tried dozens of different recipes. These are by far my favorite! Thick and chewy but with a little crunch on the top and bottom, they are reminiscent of the best bakery cookies I’ve ever had. Cookies make a great dessert on the dock because all you need is a napkin—no dessert dishes to wash. 1 cup cold butter, cut into small cubes 1 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 cup granulated sugar 2 eggs 1 tablespoon pure vanilla 1 1/2 cups cake flour 1 1/2 cups flour 3/4 teaspoon salt 3/4 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon cornstarch 2 cups chopped pecans (or walnuts or macadamia nuts) 2 cups chocolate chips (I use 1 cup milk chocolate and 1 cup bittersweet chocolate) Preheat oven to 410 degrees. Chop pecans, place on a baking sheet, and toast in the oven for about five minutes. Watch carefully as nuts burn easily. You can tell they are toasted when they smell nutty and look golden brown. Set aside to cool. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the cold cubed butter, brown sugar and granulated sugar for at least four minutes. Stop mixer after two minutes and scrape down the sides of the bowl. Continue mixing for two more minutes. The mixture should be very fluffy.
Your LOCAL dealer. Raising the standards
Add eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each one. Add vanilla and mix well. Stir in flours, cornstarch, baking soda and salt. Mix until just combined to avoid overmixing. Stir in chocolate chips and toasted pecans. Scoop dough into a 1/4 cup measuring cup. (It helps to spray the measuring cup with a little vegetable oil spray, such as Pam.) Place mounds of dough on the baking sheet a few inches apart. Do not flatten. You should be able to scoop out about 24 cookies.

BIG BATCH PALOMA COCKTAILS (Serves 16).
This is a refreshing drink for a warm day or evening on the dock. Making a batch ahead of time means guests can serve themselves. 4 cups Blanco tequila 4 cups grapefruit juice 1 cup freshly squeezed lime juice 1/2 cup simple syrup Club soda Coarse kosher salt 2 grapefruits In a large pitcher (at least a gallon) combine the tequila, grapefruit juice, lime juice and simple syrup. Stir to combine, then place the pitcher in the fridge overnight to chill. When you’re ready to serve, add a few handfuls of ice and top with 3 to 4 cups club soda, or set club soda to the side for guests to top off their drinks themselves. You can also rim glasses with salt before you fill them. This is not necessary, but highly recommended! Pour some coarse salt in a saucer. Slice grapefruits in half and then slice the halves into ½-inch slices. Run a slice of grapefruit around the rim and then dip the glass in the saucer of salt. Garnish drinks with a slice of fresh grapefruit. ✦

ike many Americans, the coronavirus pandemic turned Deb and Reade Long’s world upside down. And while the past year has been understandably stressful, the silver lining for the couple was the opportunity to fast-track a permanent move to Smith Mountain Lake. The Longs, who made their home in Wilmington, Delaware, for more than 40 years, are now enjoying retirement from their charming lakefront home, which was scheduled to be showcased on the Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour in 2020 but has been pushed to this October. “When COVID hit, we came down for the first three months to watch our [young] grandsons, Reade and Blake,” Deb says. “We were their primary caregivers and their teachers, which allowed their parents to continue working.” It wasn’t long before the newly retired couple realized living full-time at the home in Boardview Estates they had used for family vacations and weekend getaways for the past 12 years could become a reality.

The four-bedroom, three-bath contemporary features a welcoming mix of heirloom furniture and newer pieces, eclectic artwork and distinctive collections throughout. “One of the things that really attracted us to saying yes to the [Charity Home Tour] was the opportunity to show the art we’ve collected over the years,” Reade says, pointing to the soaring 5-by-8-foot contemporary piece in the main living area created by Wilmington artist Bob Palandrani. “I’m a big fan of Jackson Pollock, and this reminded me of his work.” In the entryway is a multimedia creation entitled “Wetlands” by the same artist, which is a nod to Reade’s 45-year career as a land surveyor. Deb’s profession was in the IT industry, as well as disaster recovery. Other paintings, sculpture and pottery that add splashes of bright color and whimsy throughout the light-filled home were created by artists across the country, as well as some closer to home such as the bold, black and red geometric piece that hangs in the dining room created by longtime lake resident Barbara Burlingame. Also sure to catch a visitor’s eye is “Climbing Men,” a metal sculpture featuring two small, colorful sportsmen scaling the living room’s stacked stone fireplace.

“That was just something different we picked up while on vacation in Rehoboth Beach, and we knew we had the perfect place for them,” Reade says. In the kitchen is where you’ll find an authentic cuckoo clock the travel-loving couple purchased while on a river boat cruise in Germany. The intricately crafted clock is in contrast to the rest of the space, which features contemporary cabinets designed and installed by DeNeal’s Cabinets, upscale stainless steel appliances, dual sinks and a prominent L-shaped island. “The island makes it more conducive to having two people in there working at the same time. We love to cook and are able to do that more now that we’re retired,” says Deb, whose heritage is Italian. “We make lots of homemade spaghetti and ravioli from scratch.” Miranda Dudley, owner of lake-based interior design firm Designer Solutions, assisted the Longs with tile selections in the kitchen and bathrooms, as well as paint colors throughout the home, including the main-floor master suite. The warm,

inviting space includes a picture window with built-in bench seating, also created by DeNeal’s, perfect for admiring dazzling sunset views of the Longs’ cove. Also on the main floor are two guest rooms and a cozy sunroom that opens up to a deck that spans nearly the entire length of the back of the house. Tucked into one corner of the deck is what Deb refers to as the “adult area” where friends and family members spend much of their time in the warmer months. With comfortable, upholstered seating and a huge awning to provide relief from direct sun, she says the space is perfect for enjoying “wine and charcuterie while reminiscing. We have a lot of great times out there.” Also a popular gathering area is the dock with two different seating areas—one for lounging that includes an oversized bed swing, and one for dining lakeside. 9 4

An enclosed boat house stores all the necessities for fun on the water and includes a roll-up window and bar seating to accommodate extra guests. On a terrace in between the dock and the house is a large paver firepit created by Jimmy Perdue of Perdue Landscaping.
“Whenever friends and family come, everyone wants to gather around the firepit and sit and talk,” Reade says. Not to be forgotten, the grandkids have their own space to play in a shaded area below the deck that features a sandbox with bench seating.

The Longs patterned it after a similar structure they had admired at a restaurant in Maryland. “It appealed to us because it was small and attractive,” Reade says. “We asked the owners if we could take photos and modeled ours after it, about 95 percent.” To the right of the cellar is a custom wall lined with wine planks the Longs described as their “quarantine project.” Fashioned from wooden wine boxes, the planks feature the logos of some of the couple’s favorite wineries, including Famille Perrin in the southern Rhone Valley of France. That plank made its way to Smith Mountain Lake in Deb’s suitcase, Reade explains with a laugh. A wine barrel table the couple purchased on a whim at Shelton Winery in North Carolina complements the space. The lower level also is used to showcase a number of distinctive collections, including an assortment of vinyl records that tops out at more than 800. Several album covers are used throughout the casual space as playful wall decor. Also on display in a glass cabinet is an impressive collection of shot glasses purchased at Hard Rock Cafes around the world, including Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, Budapest, Bucharest, London and Munich. Most were secured by the Longs but several have been gifted by friends and family on their various travels. “Whenever we’d travel, we would always go to Hard Rock Cafes in the area,” Reade says. “Every time I would get a shot glass. It just became a thing. It’s fun because it becomes a mission to locate them.” There’s a nautical-themed guest bedroom and bathroom incorporated into the lower level, as well as a train room (which doubles as storage space) to accommodate another of Reade’s hobbies—model trains. His current setup measures about 12 feet by 15 feet and includes a variety of trains, but primarily Lionel. Not surprisingly, it’s a favorite hangout spot for the grandkids. “That will definitely be one of my retirement projects, to build out the trains for the boys,” Reade says.

The Longs discovered Smith Mountain Lake in the early 2000s when their oldest daughter, Meredith, was a student at Virginia Tech. They purchased a waterfront townhouse in 2002 before building their current home in 2008. Theirs was the first home built in Boardview Estates, which had recently been subdivided by veteran lake real estate agent Phyllis Johnson. “It was a little bit of a leap of faith to be the first home in the subdivision,” Deb says. “It was beautiful but we wondered ‘Would it take off?’ But it’s worked out great. And we couldn’t ask for better neighbors.” Reade adds, “I like it because it’s nice and quiet.” Now that they’re both retired, the couple says they’re looking forward to even more time enjoying the lake and the home, particularly with their kids and grandkids. Meredith now calls Nashville home while younger daughter Ann Marie and her family live just outside of WinstonSalem, NC. “It’s a more centralized location,” Deb says. “That’s the nice thing about being here permanently now. We’re closer to both our girls and their families. Even though the circumstances [COVID-19] that led us to this point weren’t planned, it has worked out great. We couldn’t be happier.” ✦

THERMACELL CAMBRIDGE MOSQUITO REPELLENT LANTERN. The infuriating presence of mosquitos will make us try anything to avoid them, but citronella candles and torches don’t always get the job done, and many people are wary of chemicals in bug spray. The Thermacell Cambridge Mosquito Repellent Lantern circumvents those issues by providing a scentless, flameless area of protection with a flip of a switch. The LED light also provides soft ambient light for nights spent on your patio or deck. (Starting at $29.99 at Thermacell)

hile flowers are lovely, have you ever stopped to think about what the real stars of your container gardens are? Consider the foliage—the plants that often get added as filler but really anchor the whole arrangement, adding contrast, texture and interest without offering blooms. This year why not skip the flowers and go straight to the foliage? Blooms come and go, often requiring deadheading, while leaves stay true all season long, making the case for a foliageonly container garden at your Smith Mountain Lake house. 102

When assembling your container garden, consider what look you are going for. Elephant ears are fabulous as the centerpiece in a container because of their large size, but they require a big pot. Fill in around them with more medium-sized plants, such as coleus or coral bells, then use draping plants like creeping Jenny or sweet potato vines around the edges. Caladium, available in shades of white, green, pink and red, are another excellent container centerpiece, as they grow to only about 18 inches instead of the 6 feet that an elephant ear can reach, creating a similar impact without the space requirements. Foliage-forward plants
There are a few well-known perennials in your garden that are excellent candidates for foliage container gardens, including coral bells and hostas. Both plants come in various shades, while hostas offer a variety of textures and shapes. A notorious favorite of deer, hostas are far easier to protect when planted in containers. Ornamental grasses and ferns are other plants to be considered for foliage container gardens. Grasses in particular can add the element of height, while the plethora of ferns available (over 12,000 varieties!) suggest one could have numerous fern-only planters. When considering plants with interesting or colorful foliage, coleus is at the top of the list. The sheer number of varieties available with different leaf shapes, colors, textures and sizes is hard to keep track of, making it one of the most versatile plants out there. Speaking of colorful leaves, rex begonia also comes in a wide array of shapes, patterns and colors. Then there is the show-stopping Persian shield with its iridescent purple leaves as well as the lacy, silver-leaved dusty miller. Often added as background in container gardens as contrast to blooming annuals, these plants can anchor a foliage planter on their own with their dynamic appearance. For trailing plants with color, the purple heart (setcreasea), with its distinctive purple blade-shaped leaves, adds instant punch to any container, offering a small pink bloom upon occasion. The golden leaves of creeping Jenny or the various shades of sweet potato vine, available in golds, browns, burgundy or variegated, are other colorful trailing options, helping to soften the edge of your container while adding some punch and depth to it. smlhomemaga zine .com 103

Foliage container gardens don’t just have to be pretty; they can be useful too. Why not add some herbs or other edible plants? Ornamental kale is a popular cool-weather container plant, but other types of edible kale are also incredibly interesting in appearance. Dinosaur kale, which is slightly blue, or Redbor kale, with its frilly magenta leaves, make for good-looking edible additions, while Swiss chard, particularly the rainbow cultivar, is another. Herbs are another consideration for edible additions in a foliage garden. Purple sage, parsley, rosemary, chives, and golden oregano are just a few of the many herbs that are as easy to grow as they are attractive. Many gardeners consider containers the only way to grow mint and many of its relatives, as the hardy herb is known to be slightly invasive when it has found a happy spot to grow. Chocolate mint, with its brown stems, has a darker green leaf than most mints, and features the aroma of chocolate. Pineapple mint, with its variegated leaves, is another interesting S m i t h M o u n t a i n L a ke H O M E 2 0 2 1
addition to a container without fear of it overtaking your garden. When assembling your foliage container, keep in mind where it will live. If you are looking to put a foliage container garden on a front porch that gets afternoon sun, avoid including ferns and other shadeloving plants. The ferns will do much better in a container garden on a screened porch that gets indirect light all day. Consider the scale as well; dwarf ornamental grasses will not require as big a pot as larger varieties or even elephant ears. You’ll want to provide space for your plants to spread out over the season, so plan accordingly.
WHEN CONSIDERING PLANTS WITH INTERESTING OR COLORFUL FOLIAGE, COLEUS IS AT THE TOP OF THE LIST. THE SHEER NUMBER OF VARIETIES IS HARD TO KEEP TRACK OF, MAKING IT ONE OF THE MOST VERSATILE PLANTS OUT THERE.
Many of these plants can be grown both as perennials or as annuals, so with a bit of extra care, your foliage container garden can last much longer than one growing season. A container garden that lasts year in and year out with minimal effort seems too good to be true, but it might just be one of the best-kept gardening secrets. ✦

outdoor lighting ILLUMINATE THE NIGHT IN STYLE WITH THESE TIPS FROM THE EXPERTS BY C A R O L J . A L E X A N D E R
Arriving home after dark, there’s something welcoming about flipping a switch. From cold and dark to a cheerful glow, your home’s light pulls you into its warm embrace. With outdoor lighting, that same feeling comes every time you pull in the drive. Songs pay tribute to the gleam of a porch light. But outdoor lighting ventures past the porch. Even lights installed just for safety’s sake wash a home with that same warm welcome. Lakeside, outdoor lighting ventures even further—enhancing the beauty of your property and magnifying the glory of the water. 1 0 6

Whether you simply want to stay safe, enhance your home’s features, or spend time outdoors enjoying lakeside living, there are some things to know. Staying safe
The first thing most homeowners think of when discussing outdoor lighting is security. “I always recommend a floodlight on each side of the home for security,” says Kate Farmer, owner of Sweet Pea’s Lighting and Decor in Gretna. “A motion sensor over the garage is nice, but you need the ability to turn on the lights in an emergency.” Clay Johnston, owner and senior designer of Outdoor Lighting Expressions, suggests that security floodlights be properly aimed and on timers. “Nothing is worse than having a neighbor’s security light shining in your eyes all night long,” he says. However, he also argues that landscape lighting makes your property secure without bothering your neighbors with bright floodlights. Before shopping for floodlights, though, examine your entryway lighting. “Entries typically have fixtures too small to provide quality lighting,” says Farmer. She recommends installing larger sconces, whether on one side of the door or both, so the top of the fixture is lower than the doorframe. Illuminating your home’s unique features
After making sure everything is secure, you’ll want to beautify the property by enhancing your home’s unique features. Outdoor lighting specialists use several techniques to achieve different effects. Highlighting, shadowing and silhouetting, uplighting and downlighting, and ground or path lighting are the most popular. Farmer prefers to begin a lighting project by highlighting the home’s exterior corners. If you want more, she and Johnston both recommend highlighting columns, posts, trees, statues or shrubbery. “You can virtually light up anything to create a focal point,” says Johnston. Varying the distance, position, and color of light results in different effects, too. For instance, washing your Japanese maple with a soft light creates a magical, shadowy effect on the surface behind. Yet, pointing the light at the wall behind the tree creates a defined silhouette of it, rather than an ethereal-looking shadow. And by using a low-wattage, wide-angle floodlight, you can wash a wall or fence in light, creating a soft, ambient glow. 10 8

Enjoying lakeside living
What is life on the lake without outdoor entertaining? Before you plan the menu and invite your closest friends, think about how lighting will play a role in your soiree. “The first question to ask,” says Farmer, “is if the lights will be temporary or permanent.”
smlhomemaga zine .com 10 9
PHOTOS OUTDOOR LIGHTING EXPRESSIONS
You achieve uplighting and downlighting by placing fixtures either below or above the item you want to highlight. Uplighting creates a stately appearance by washing, shadowing or silhouetting an object. Downlighting, especially when placed in the eaves of your home, creates bright direct light in a given area. Once she’s highlighted the corners, Farmer looks for dark spots. She explains that you want to eliminate existing dark areas and avoid creating new ones. “All lighting enhances the beauty of the lake but you also don’t want a fall risk. You want to see the elevation while walking up an incline, steps, or different levels of terrain.” For this reason, ground lighting along walkways, deck stairs or piers provides a place for safe footing and draws attention to lowlying shrubs or architectural elements. Properly installed, ground lighting adds a romantic feel to your outdoors.
Confused by lumens, watts, and LEDs? All the choices and terminology that come with choosing both fixtures and bulbs is enough to make your head spin. Before calling a lighting professional, or even heading out to buy replacements, brush up on your lighting terminology. It will help you to understand what it’s all about. KELVIN (K) Refers to a light’s temperature. The lower the number, the warmer the light. For most outdoor lighting, you want a warm glow. For spotlights, a higher number will give you a higher concentration of light. LUMEN (LM) The measurement of the amount of light visible to the human eye. The higher the lumens, the brighter the light. WATT (W) The amount of power a light uses. You want the most lumens for the least amount of watts, as found in LEDs. LIGHT-EMITTING DIODE (LED) A type of bulb that uses about one-sixth the amount of energy as an incandescent bulb and one-half that of a halogen light.
Permanent fixtures perfect for entertaining include exterior chandeliers. These durable fixtures are designed for outdoor use and hang from under the deck, an arbor, or a porch ceiling. An exterior chandelier adds elegance to your outdoor dining space when sized and installed well. For a standard-size chandelier, multiply the width of your table by .66. The result is the size chandelier to buy. Hang it 30 to 34 inches from the top of your table for headroom and optimal lighting. “For a party atmosphere,” says Farmer, “bistro lights are popular.” These Edison-style bulbs give a yellowish, old-fashioned look to your patio, dock or pool area. But they’re not permanent and must be stored for the winter. Do-it-yourself outdoor lighting
Both Farmer and Johnston agree that outdoor lighting is best done by professionals. “Find someone with experience to bring ideas to the table,” says Johnston. “An experienced lighting designer will know how to achieve the desired effect and which fixtures to use.” He asks the homeowner a lot of questions to fish out what they like and hope to achieve. He also has a large library of project photos to help them communicate what they have in mind. “Find a professional,” says Farmer, “because it’s an expensive project to DIY if you don’t know what you’re doing.” She begins each consultation with two questions: “What is your goal?” And “What is your budget?” Though the low-voltage wiring for outdoor lighting is relatively affordable, the fixtures are expensive. “That’s because they’re made to withstand the elements,” says Farmer. Both experts agree that most homeowners don’t realize the expense until they start. So, Farmer recommends
they prioritize their list and start with what’s most important. “Do what’s in your budget first, then build from there,” she says. Johnston stresses that outdoor lighting professionals “are more in the effects business than the fixture business.” He says that once you decide what effect you want, an experienced designer can provide that because they know the right combination of fixture, light, color and position to achieve it—something a DIY-er would struggle to do. What about solar?
Environmentally conscious homeowners who want to reduce their carbon footprint may think that solar fixtures are the best way to stay aligned with their values. But according to the experts, that’s not necessarily the case. “Solar lights tend to fail and aren’t quality made,” says Johnston. “The lighting from wired lighting is far superior and we couldn’t do what we do, achieve the effects we want, with solar.” If a homeowner burned 20 8-watt LED lights per night, they would use about 18 kilowatts of electricity per month with an approximate cost under five dollars. The energy required to manufacture cheap solar lights that you must replace frequently is much greater. Plus, they don’t stay on all night, aren’t as bright, and aren’t made to hold up in the weather. If you want your outdoor lighting to welcome you and your guests in a warm embrace, Farmer stresses the importance of choosing the right fixture for the desired effect. “Size and proportion are the number one thing we see wrong in DIY jobs,” she says. “It’s like putting on an ugly necklace.” You can beautify. Or, you can make something already lovely, ugly. ✦
LOW-VOLTAGE LIGHTING This phrase simply means that your lights have a low risk of electric shock and an extremely low risk of producing an electrical arc. Also, low-voltage means low power, which saves you money in energy costs. SPREAD Refers to the number of degrees in area that your light covers

DESIGN best-made beds
Sleep Well, lake better
making the best of all your beds BY AMELIA POORE
At the lake we seem have more overnight guests than the average person, and who could blame us (or our friends) for not wanting to leave? Yet the hassles of hospitality can sometimes impair an otherwise perfect weekend; there is more to worry about when the guest rooms are full, most notably next week’s laundry day when we will be washing all the bedding we own. However, strategically dressing the beds for both style and ease can relieve our minds and our washing machines.
1 1 2
S m i t h M o u n t a i n L a ke H O M E 2 0 2 1
Most designers adhere to the five layers of bedding: mattress covers, sheets, pillows, covers and embellishments. In both the master bedroom and our guest bedrooms, working within this system ensures the bed will be clean, beautiful and, of course, comfortable. The mattress cover is a frequently overlooked but very necessary base layer for any bedding. Mattresses should be replaced every seven years according to some experts, but using a high-quality mattress cover can extend the life of your mattress for years beyond its prescribed expiration. Mattress covers also cut down on allergens and, as an added bonus, can help keep our sheets on the bed with their added grip. Sheets are the most important layer of bedding; we spend a third of our lives wrapped in our sheets, so investing in a high-quality set is worth it. Most of us associate a high thread count with high quality; however, more important than thread count is thread quality. The best starting point is choosing any natural, non-chemically treated fiber, but most experts agree that cotton is the easiest to care for, the longest-lasting, and the best-feeling option. Specifically, the best thread comes from “long-staple” cotton, which simply means the raw cotton has longer fibers. The long fibers help the alternating threads stay smooth and flat. Popular long-staple cottons include pima, supima and Egyptian cotton. Next is deciding which weave you prefer: percale or sateen? Percale sheets use a plain weave; the vertical and horizontal threads alternate over each other one to one. If you need versatile, everyday sheets and prefer light, crisp fabric, percale sheets are probably

best. Additionally, most patterned sheets are percale because the simpler weave helps the printed pattern last longer, so if you’re looking to coordinate a pretty paisley or playful plaid to fold over the comforter, percale sheets are likely your best bet. Sateen sheets use a satin weave: Instead of the threads overlapping in a 1:1 ratio, the horizontal threads “float” over multiple vertical threads (usually three or four) at a time. The satin weave creates a smoother-feeling fabric, so if you’re looking for more dense, sleek sheets, then sateen is probably preferable. This is where thread count comes in. Thread count simply refers to the number of horizontal and vertical threads woven into one square inch of fabric, basically the fabric’s density. Percale sheets naturally use less thread per square inch than a sateen sheet, which requires more densely packed threads per square inch because of the “floats” in the satin weave. Accordingly, percale sheets, because they have less thread, are cooler and more breathable, and sateen sheets are heavier and cozier. The ideal thread count is about 400 for percale and about 600 for sateen, which are both much lower than the 1500 we often see advertised. The cost of buying percale or sateen sheets is primarily the same; it all comes down to personal preference for look, feel and temperature. Many people use percale sheets in the summer and sateen in the winter because of the difference in weight and breathability. Now comes the fun part: the “outside” layers. Pillows, covers and decorative pillows are where we get to bring our own personality into bedding. In the master bedroom, we have much more freedom to attend to our specific preferences, since it is such a private space. When designing your master bedroom, the only real rule is to be true to your personal style. If that means mixing fun prints and using bold colors, do it! The simplest way to mix in patterns and colors is through throw pillows. There’s no need to go overboard (unless you want to!), but adding a variety of pillow shapes and sizes not only adds interest, it also gives you options for what will be the most functional and comfortable. On a typical queen bed, most people would agree that having two standard pillows for sleeping is preferable, but adding Euro pillows in the front allows an extra cushion to sit up and read a book, watch a video on S m i t h M o u n t a i n L a ke H O M E 2 0 2 1
your phone, or type a quick “out-of-office” email on your laptop. Adding a boudoir pillow or a bolster to adorn the front gives you extra support or even a place to prop the book in your lap. In guest rooms, experts advise thinking like a hotelier: what will be the most comfortable for the most people? The easiest way to accomplish this is through layers and variety. Providing guests with a coverlet and a duvet allows them some flexibility in temperature, and gives you even more opportunity to play with patterns and textures. A matelassé coverlet with a scalloped edge or a lightweight quilt paired with a soft solid comforter folded at the foot of the bed is classic and versatile. Just be sure to fold the comforter so guests can easily reach and pull the comforter up and over themselves. Alternatively, using a basketweave blanket hidden beneath a comforter with patterned duvet offers the same versatility while still showing off your duvet. Also, providing two layers of pillows for sleeping—one softer, one firmer—provides flexibility in comfort, but keeping extra pillows and blankets in the guest room closet isn’t a bad idea. Experts also advise having the same sheets for all of your guest beds. This way, when one guest leaves and strips the sheets, there’s another set ready without needing to do laundry right away. Lastly, even though it sounds scary, sticking with all white bedding makes laundry day simple and straight-forward: The ability to simply bleach everything is highly underrated. The best way to dress the beds at your lake house is going to be unique to you and your space, but strategizing to procure the easiest, simplest, and comfiest bedding will help you and your guests relax and enjoy the lake to the fullest. ✦

BUILDING A DREAM HOME TO CARRY ON FAMILY TRADITION
M
B Y C H A R LOT T E FA R L E Y P h oto g r a p hy by C r a i g S c h af f e r arianne and Bill Pecoraro have enjoyed Smith Mountain Lake for as long as they can remember. As a young couple, they spent weekends and vacations at a small lake cottage belonging to Marianne’s parents. Space was tight with just two bedrooms and one bath available for the family, which included Marianne’s seven siblings. “We would put up tents, camp out, everything,” Bill recalls. “We slept in the garage in sleeping bags one night when Marianne was four months pregnant, and we could smell fumes from the lawn mower,” he laughs. It wasn’t long before they decided they wanted to have a lake cottage of their own. They wanted more space for their family of five and sought respite from their busy lives in Richmond, where Bill maintains his veterinary practice and Marianne works as an occupational therapist. Eventually, the Pecoraros purchased a place on Anthony Home Road, which is where they’d spend countless weekends over the next twenty years. Still, the hunt for their dream lake property never really ended.
smlhomemaga zine .com 117
Building a dream home
When Bill and Marianne were out on the water one day in 2017, they caught sight of a red A-frame house situated on a prime location on the water. Since the house appeared dilapidated and surrounded by bushes and overgrowth, it occurred to Bill that the owner might be willing to part with the unkempt property. Bill asked his Realtor, Wil Childress of Lake Retreat Properties, to get in touch with the property owner to see if he or she was interested in selling—and the response was a resounding no. Yet just a few weeks later, Bill heard from Childress that the owner had changed his mind and was indeed interested in selling. Since the property had been neglected for some time, the Pecoraros had their work cut out for them; Childress wasn’t even comfortable walking through the doors of the mold-and-mildew-filled house. “We wore masks before it was cool!” jokes Bill about entering the space to assess the scope of the project. As suspected, nothing from the original home was salvageable, so Bill and Marianne set about their plans to create the lake house of their dreams. Over the course of the next year, the Pecoraros met with architect Eric Buck of Comprehensive Home Design and builder Phil Floyd of Floyd Enterprises to design and carry out the building plan for their 4 bedroom, 4.5 bath dream home.

Almost a panorama
Bill and Marianne’s home commands over 600 feet of frontage at the end of a winding gravel road. The slow drive down the wooded road stirs feelings of anticipation that quickly give way to remarkable, unrestricted views of Smith Mountain and the lake that bears its name. “The view gets me every time—even when the house was being built,” says Marianne. Architect Eric Buck instantly saw the potential of maximizing this view and encouraged the Pecoraros to take advantage of it in their home design. He says, “The lot is a point lot, which is more or less a circle, so the challenge from a design perspective was to capture as many water views as possible from every room possible.” Another challenge was finding a way to add a screened porch, back covered porch, and outdoor kitchen to the design without blocking the views from those interior spaces. “The goal was to see the lake from every room if possible, and between the builder [Phil Floyd], the Pecoraros, and myself, we just about pulled it off,” Buck says. With the lake a focal point in nearly every room, you won’t find billowing window treatments or patterned area rugs vying for the spotlight; nothing interferes with the spectacular sights of Smith Mountain Lake.

Mixing instead of matching
With abundant windows comes the abundant natural light that bathes the open concept living, dining and kitchen spaces. An trifecta of design styles—industrial, coastal and farmhouse— work harmoniously in everything from light fixtures to furnishings. In the dining area, a candelabra-style chandelier hangs above a custom live-edge wooden table made by Bill St. Pierre, a Floyd-based woodworker. Bill jokes, “Each time we come back, it gets bigger—it’s like suddenly there’s space for 20 with this live edge!”
Even the simple task of washing dishes feels less like drudgery since the sink faces out toward the spectacular waterfront and mountain views. The white quartz marble backsplash ties in with the marble quartz countertops of the sink and counter bar. The countertops by the stove and coffee bar aren’t quartz but rather leatherized granite, which Marianne loves “because it doesn’t show water spots or lint.” A quirky, colorful sculpture of a parrot rests on the kitchen bar, and both Marianne and Bill admit to their love of Jimmy Buffet. “We’re kind of Parrotheads,” Bill says, quick to quip that “at the lake, it’s always five o’clock!”

A true lake house
For the Pecoraros, a screened-in porch was a must. “Normally, when we’re at the lake, we’re outside all day,” Marianne says, adding that they wanted “covered areas so we could still be outside and enjoy everything, even in the fall.” By including a stone-faced, remote-controlled gas log fireplace in the screened porch, the space acts as a three-season room, allowing the family to enjoy more time outdoors beyond the summer months. A cedar plank ceiling lends warmth to the blue and gray space while a swinging door evokes the nostalgic feel of afternoons spent visiting on Grandma’s back porch. “We wanted it to be a true lake house,” Marianne says. One of the guest rooms even has direct access to the porch. Lovingly referred to as “The Richmond Room” from its collection of Richmond-centric artwork, this is where Marianne’s mother likes to stay when she comes to visit. However, unlike their earlier lake house where the three Pecoraro kids each had their own space, the guest rooms here on Lighthouse Lane are up for grabs. 1 2 4

Every room has a view
When Gabby, Jacqui or Alex brings friends in for the weekend, it’s likely they’ll stay in the upstairs bonus room that Bill and Marianne recently finished. In this home, every room on every level offers a unique—and often stunning—perspective of lake scenery, and Marianne, inspired by the gorgeous sunrise views out the window, used that to inspire the room’s decor. While Marianne chose a misty palette of white, gray, and various blues and greens for the rest of the house, this room was treated to a soft shade of lilac. “We really love the way it turned out,” she says. Three queen-sized beds occupy the space while framed photos of their old lake house hang on the walls. And while the rest of the home sports engineered hardwood underfoot, the Pecoraros opted for luxury vinyl tiles in this space. “People come in wet, throw their towels on the floor, and then we find them two days later, so this ‘luxury vinyl’ was a practical choice,” Bill explains, adding that “someday we’ll have grandkids up here.”

Upping the home bar game
Head down a flight of stairs and you’ll think you stepped into a lake resort lounge. “You’re underground and you would never know it,” Bill says, noting that it has main-level features. Tallerthan-average ceilings and large doors give the appearance that this could be the home’s primary level. Once again, near-panoramic views frame the open concept space that includes a TV lounge, game tables, and a full-fledged bar. The home bar rivals a restaurant bar in terms of both form and function. “I wanted it to look like a true bar with the glass, the mirrors, everything,” Marianne says. “So when the crew kept referring to this space as the ‘second kitchen’ I had to keep reminding them that I didn’t need a second kitchen. What I wanted was a bar!” Six industrial-chic swivel stools sit at the counter and a print of the Staten Island Brewing Company nods to Bill’s native New York roots. The Pecoraros, who enjoy visiting local and regional breweries and distilleries, proudly display their colorful collection of taps right beside the bar. “We wanted it to feel like a brewery,” Marianne says, pointing to the industrial light fixtures and natural wood tones. The downstairs is a comfortable space, indeed, and not only by way of amenities but also when it comes to temperature. While most finished basements tend to run on the chilly side, this one doesn’t. Bill attributes this to the geothermal heating system. “It really keeps the heating and cooling so effective. It did cost double the amount of a normal heating and cooling system, but it’s paying off,” Bill says.
would be down at the dock or inside while I was outside grilling. Now while I’m grilling, I have people to hang out with.” And yes, Marianne does the grilling. Bill jokes, in his lighthearted manner, that grilling is “too much pressure.” The Pecoraros enlisted Southern Landscape Group to help create their outdoor oasis, which they enjoy immensely. A verdant space with pristine views of the water, the outdoor area is where they spend much of their lake time. A brick pathway leads out to a 2,400-square-foot dock, another favorite outdoor gathering space come summer as the family comes back and forth from cruising the lake on kayaks or on the boat. This custom home seems made for entertaining, and while the kids bring friends in for the weekend, Bill and Marianne entertain with family. They’ve spent each Thanksgiving at the lake ever since they bought their first lake property, and they come every summer weekend at the lake and sometimes for longer stretches. Truly, they come as often as they can, seeing the lake as a haven. “I talk to people all day, so when I’m here, I like to have peace and quiet and unwind,” Bill says. And that’s exactly what the entire Pecoraro family loves to do when they’re at their second home: relax, spend time on the water, crack open a beer, and relax. As an escape from the stress and monotony of the everyday, the emphasis on family and relaxation makes the Pecoraros’ home a welcome retreat. ✦
Entertaining family
The rest of this lower level features two additional guest rooms, storage space, and a fully stocked games closet. Marianne explains that they didn’t have cable TV at their old places, so the kids grew up playing a lot of board games. “We always played together as a family,” she says. The downstairs doors open to a hot tub, a firepit, and a California kitchen. “We love this!” says Marianne, who thoroughly appreciates the new grilling space. “At the old house, everyone

oming together for a common cause to help foster community is the mission of the Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour. The event gives visitors the opportunity to view beautiful lakefront homes that spark design inspiration and creative ideas for their own homes.
This year the SML Charity Home Tour is slated to take place Friday, October 8th through Sunday, October 10th. The tour is an all-volunteer event raising money to support eight local charities in the Smith Mountain Lake region. To date, the tour has raised nearly $5 million for local charities. Last year marked the 30th anniversary of the SML Charity Home Tour, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, the tour was canceled. Miranda Dudley, co-event chair and owner/interior designer at Designer Solutions, says that just being able to have the tour this year will be a wonderful thing to support the chosen charities. The eight lakefront homes on the tour run the gamut in styles and design. “The houses are chosen based on their character and their beauty,” Dudley says. According to the tour website, homeowners and volunteers are typically present to answer questions about the design, construction, decorating and remodeling that make each home distinctive. Unique to this event, all homes on the tour are accessible by car and boat, giving residents and visitors a fun experience. There have been some 1,200 volunteers that help assist with the planning, administration and hosting of the SML Charity Home Tour in the past. Dudley says, “The more volunteers, the merrier!” The charities for 2021 include Adult Care Center, Agape Center, Bedford Pregnancy Center, Tackfully Teamed Riding Academy, Faith Network of Franklin County, Franklin County Family YMCA, Helping Hands of Franklin County, and SML Good Neighbors. Proceeds from the ticket sales as well as business and other donations are divided among the eight participating charities.
