EDITOR’S note In recent years, the search for peace and calm in the world seems to have intensified.

So it shouldn’t be surprising that a number of studies have been published during this time pointing to the health benefits of living on the water. While the reasons for this are still being evaluated, I think most of us intuitively know the effects on our own hearts and minds.

I recently read a Real Simple article that quoted Sanam Hafeez, a New York City-based neuropsychologist and faculty member at Columbia University. He eloquently summarizes, “Humans love being around water because something about it is inherently calming. Perhaps for some, water takes them back to their youth; to swimming in a pool, lake or ocean. Bodies of water have a dream-like quality to them, much like clouds, and allow us to see different shapes and imagine limitless possibilities.”

Isn’t that one of the most joyful elements of lake living — or visiting? Finding the space to imagine limitless possibilities and enjoy the calm of the water. Our 2024 edition of Smith Mountain Lake HOME explores some of these possibilities.

ll good things are meant to be shared. If you’re planning the home of your dreams, and those dreams include opening your doors to family and friends, there are many ideas to help you create the perfect gathering place.

When building a home that can also function as a vacation spot for others, there are special considerations to keep in mind. Even if it’s your permanent residence, you will want to go the extra mile to accommodate all ages and create spaces where your guests can truly relax and enjoy each other’s company.

Matt Prescott, owner of Prescott Construction Company, says vacation homes are “their own thing … you have to think about hosting multiple families.

When you’re just building a single-family home, with occasional relatives who visit, you don’t have to think about a lot of the same things.”

In designing a lake vacation home, he says you can take cues from the beach homes you may rent for your family every summer, incorporating multiple bathrooms and bedrooms (sometimes multiple primary suites) and a living room on all levels.

Entertaining features A big part of a family vacation is about talking, sharing meals, playing games and doing activities together in a comfortable area where everyone can participate. That’s why builders recommend large, open floor plans, with a central kitchen/ living room area.

Robert Bauer, president and owner of Robert R. Bauer Contractors Inc., says large areas for entertainment — both inside and outside — are always a key component of his designs.

“Most of the bigger homes we’re doing start with an open floor plan, with a large island, seating area and very open floor space. You want to address the entertaining areas, and then carry those outside, with bigger patios or decks, fire pits and outdoor kitchens. It seems like there’s always food and drinks involved with the entertaining, and those are the areas to keep open.”

Quiet retreats This includes plenty of napping spots or what Bauer calls “quiet zones.” He’s designed cozy corners in primary suites, a sitting area off a library, a bonus area out of a garage and even an arts and crafts room tucked away from the main living areas. “A lot of times, it’s a balcony or space off a guest room that’s not attached to everything else, a place to relax and take the views in and have their coffee.”

The right furniture and décor can help create comfy rest spots. Choose chaises and low chairs with deep cushions and ottomans, and place several pillows and throw blankets well within reach. Outside, add porch swings and hammocks in advantageous locations to take in the best views.

For all ages If you have a growing family, you should keep all ages in mind.

Little ones need spaces where they can play safely — and not too far from a living area where adults can check in on them.

Mudrooms are also popular with families, especially lakeside, where you can drop your wet items and dry off without traipsing through the house. Install hooks and lockers to keep family members’ items separate.

Prescott says it’s always a good idea to plan a bathroom on the entry level, such as in a walk-out basement. (Because most lake homes are built on a slope, you will often find bathrooms just inside the doors of a terrace level.) And for your furry guests, Prescott says he’s even designed a dog wash station in the mudroom.

As children get older, they may want a space to call their own, a room where they can enjoy time with cousins and others their

age. “On rainy days, you definitely want an area they can go and spend time. Many people are building game rooms,” Bauer says.

“This can be in a basement or a bonus room over a garage.”

For older family members, mobility is key. They need to enjoy all the house has to offer. Bauer urges homeowners to plan ahead for inevitable aging, making sure they have wider door openings, walk-in (and curbless) showers, easy access to exterior doors and a first-floor bedroom. And although some homeowners may not want to splurge on an elevator, Bauer says he’s seeing more people request this convenient option.

“We do elevators on 90 percent of our projects now,” he says. “They’re very important, and with special pricing for ADA requirements or aging in place, elevators now cost less than a new vehicle to put in your home.”

Sweet dreams Sleeping arrangements are also important, providing adequate bedrooms but keeping it practical. Bauer says homeowners often request large bedrooms, but he feels sometimes the plans are oversized. “People don’t come to the lake to stay in their rooms; they want to be out in the entertaining areas. Everything here revolves around the lake, taking in the views.”

For children, custom-made, built-in bunks not only look high-end, but are sturdy and functional.

It’s also a good idea to have a kitchenette or breakfast bar/wet bar upstairs and also in the basement to keep people from having to go up and down stairs late at night or early in the morning. If you’re welcoming large groups, a second washer and dryer set could prove useful. Prescott says he will sometimes add an extra stacked unit on a separate level from the main laundry room.

Work from home And no matter how much you may want to experience the great outdoors, you’re probably still tied to some technology. Guests will appreciate you installing TVs in all bedrooms and providing places to charge devices. “You can never have enough charging stations,” says Prescott, noting that his company has been installing more electrical outlets with USB ports in homes.

Bauer says every two out of three houses he builds now include a home office. He has even built a home with his-and-her offices.

“You’re seeing more and more people work from home now, or they’re at the lake vacationing but still have work or conference calls. That’s important to incorporate in your floor plan.”

It’s also important to make sure guests feel at home but are able to maintain their privacy. One way to do this is to build a family suite attached to the home but cordoned off in its own wing. Another is to construct a guesthouse on your property. Prescott says he has seen many people make use of a guesthouse, like grandparents or couples without children.

When you aren’t hosting close family and friends, you can always use the guesthouse as a rental option.

Outdoor spaces should also be a focal point of your design when planning ways to bring the family together — from wide decks to covered porches with plenty of seating for guests.

Prescott says he’s met some homeowners who love to spend so much time outdoors that they added multi-level decks on their home in almost the same square footage as inside their home.

He’s installing a lot of outdoor heaters and even heaters on a screened-in porch, turning it into a three-season room.

Building a home can also be about building memories.

hose who are fortunate enough to live along a shoreline know there are benefits that come with that location. Being close to the water’s edge brings soothing views and a connection to nature that many people experience only occasionally. There are also unique challenges and obligations that come with proximity, as adjacent terrain plays a key role in the health of a body of water. That’s where buffer landscaping comes in.

Buffer landscaping is exactly what it sounds like: intentionally placed, deep-rooted plants that create a living safeguard, protecting nearby water from harmful run-off and stabilizing a shoreline that might otherwise be susceptible to erosion. While a lake might have its own ecosystem, it is still connected to the land around it. When developed lots sit alongside water, people have a responsibility to help manage what goes into that water.

Water quality at the lake For the last 37 years, the Smith Mountain Lake Association (SMLA) has monitored Smith Mountain Lake’s water quality with the help of dozens of volunteers and ongoing collaboration with Ferrum College. Every two weeks during the summer season, volunteers visit 84 designated sites around the lake. They check water clarity and take samples that are later examined for levels of phosphorus, a nutrient that is essential for life but can have damaging effects at elevated levels and chlorophyll-a, an indicator of algal growth in the water. By monitoring these components, SMLA tracks the aging of the lake as well as identifies if algal growth may be overgrowing and leading to a “bloom.” Algae blooms can lead to depleted levels of oxygen in the water, and depending on what type of bloom is present, could be potentially harmful.

SMLA reports that the lake’s water clarity and phosphorus in the 2023 season are consistent with levels measured over the past 20 years, but chlorophyll-a levels were notably higher just this past year. The long-term stability in phosphorus levels, in particular, could be a result of SMLA’s dedicated effort since 2020 to encourage lakeside property owners to use low or no-phosphorus fertilizers, to add shoreline buffer gardens and improve awareness of the benefits of buffer landscaping. The occurrence of harmful algal blooms during the summer of 2023 at SML likely triggered elevated chlorophyll-a levels. The SMLA website provides gauges to depict water quality monitoring results and maintains an archive of all water quality monitoring reports.

How buffer landscaping helps When homeowners create buffer beds or gardens, the benefits exist both close to home and well beyond property lines. For the homeowner, buffer landscaping adds visual interest, bringing in trees, shrubs and blooming perennials that can frame the view in a pleasing fashion, screen the property from passing water craft and even help minimize noise from the lake. Plantings also add to property value by stabilizing the shoreline through their root systems, which can minimize damage from the natural rise and fall of the lake level.

Thinking about the benefits beyond your own land, buffer landscaping helps the lake by retaining nutrients on the land by intercepting yard run-off, which often contains phosphorus-heavy fertilizer and other pollutants. Stabilization of the shoreline is also important for the lake, preventing additional soil from moving into the water. Adding riprap is another way to bolster the shoreline, but yard run-off moves through rocks directly into the water beyond, and a pile of rocks doesn’t offer the aesthetic appeal of carefully placed plants.

Certified Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists visit homeowners free of charge to help assess what’s best for the site, considering the slope, what’s already in place and ultimate goals. They also provide a list of native plants and cultivars that do well around the lake. Remember: An APCO permit is required to remove shrubs and trees below the 800-foot contour but is not required to plant below the 800-foot contour line.

Property owners may also reach out to the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation Natural Heritage Program (www.dcr.virginia.gov/natural-heritage), which provides information about invasive plants to be avoided and native plants that will do well around the lake. As a plan is developed, be sure to consider variety – of size, blooming color and quantity – remembering that once planted, vegetation will only get bigger. If you want to keep that lovely view, be sure to check height at maturity before you put it in the ground.

It is vital to not only plant a buffer, but to also maintain it, according to Keri Green of SMLA. Watering problems and deer predation are the primary reasons that buffers fail. With a good plan for maintenance and upkeep, your plants should thrive.

The “wake” refers to the chaos created in the water by a boat traveling at a high speed. Wakeboarding is the synchronized movement of the body and balancing on the board, as the board glides afloat the wake. All this may look effortless to the landbound observer, but make no mistake: wakeboarding is one extreme watersport.

Who does wakeboarding appeal to?

Skiers, snowboarders, surfers and skateboarders might find the sport particularly enjoyable. Even if you have no prior experience or conditioning through similar sports, though, don’t be discouraged. A few tips and tricks just may give you the confidence to get your mind, body and soul on board.

How to learn Like any other sport, the best way to learn is by doing. The muscle memory is developed through repetitive motion once your body learns the sequences of movement and balancing techniques. You can build your confidence through YouTube tutorials, how-to articles and guidebooks. Once you’ve intellectually wrapped your head around the procedure, it’s time to hit the waves. Lessons can easily run you between $100-$200 per hour. If you have a trusted loved one who wakeboards, they might be willing to help you out for free, just for the fun of it. It’s your choice on how technical you want to get with the learning process. The strict adherence to steps, along with proper equipment, will help you go far in your preparation. Safety is paramount.

The length of your chosen wakeboard will depend on your weight and height. You can discuss these factors with a shop professional, whether renting or buying. The boat rope should be completely firm with no slack. Beginners should stick close to the boat with no more distance than 55 feet. The shorter the rope, the greater the pull and stability. More experienced wakeboarders may hang back as far as 75+ feet. Next, you’ll secure your feet in the boots, which might bring back nostalgic memories of learning roller skating. See? It’s not the first time you’ve kept yourself upright while moving through the world with speed and coordination. You’ve got this!

Once secured, your feet should be shoulder width apart.

Point your toes slightly. Take hold of the rope with both hands, straighten your arms and bend your knees. Make sure that your

body and board are aligned while facing the back of the boat.

When the boat starts propelling and you feel that upward pull, bend your knees toward your chest. You should be vertical. If you’re tugged too far forward, bend your knees even more while squatting. Once balanced, you can straighten your knees to a standing position. Circle your dominant leg to the back.

You will now be in the traditional sideways wakeboarding position. Once you get some practice and reach a comfort level with wakeboarding, you might even choose to try some ollie pops, edges, crosses, tail grabs, spins and jumps if you dare.

As earthbound humans, there’s just something about soaring above the water with a speed that our bodies don’t normally permit. Take to the wake and awaken your senses with pure adrenaline!

STEP 2: Tie the rope to the boat.

Quality wakeboard ropes have virtually no stretch. The length of ropes can vary from 55 to 75+ feet depending on experience level, boat wake and personal preference. It is better for beginners to tie the rope to the boat as short as you can. A shorter rope increases the amount of upward pull from the boat and places the wakeboarder at a narrower section of the wake.

STEP 3: Get ready.

STEP 5: Go!

Strap on the boots, ensuring your feet are shoulder-width apart and slighty turned out. This will give you stability when gliding on the water. Make your way into the water.

Once the boat starts moving, it'll pull you up. Keep the handle still and your legs bent, pulling your knees into your chest. If your hands are being pulled too far forward, that's a sign your knees aren't bent enough. Once you are over the top of your board and feeling balanced, you can straighten your legs, and slowly stand up.

STEP 4: Get set.

To start, grab the rope, and get lined up with the boat. Keep your arms straight and your knees bent toward your chest.

STEP 6: Wakeboard.

Once you're standing, gently rotate your dominant foot to the back. You're now wakeboarding! Once you get the hang of it, try to move around, and cross the wake. As your skill level increases, you can try other tricks like spinning or jumping.

Now trending: Hydrofoiling You may have noticed small crowds gathering on the lake shore to watch boarders with those funky vertical attachments that tower them far above the water. What are they doing?

Hydrofoiling, or simply “foiling” as it’s known in the inner circles, looks similar to wakeboarding but is technically a different sport altogether.

FUN FACTS: n While both wakeboarding and foiling involve a board behind a boat, foiling involves a different board and extra gadgets. n The long mechanical piece that sticks out of the water is called a fuselage, and its job is to connect the board to an underwater wing propeller feature. n The hydrodynamic design allows the hydrofoil to transform the track of water molecules with a force that propels the board above the water. n While traditional wakeboarding embraces the force of the wake, foiling avoids the brunt of it by gliding parallel to it. n While wakeboarding relies on the rhythm of the wake, foiling involves a rhythmic popping motion performed by the foiler. n Safety tip: If hydrofoiling, you should wear a helmet and an impact vest for rib protection. These help prevent injuries if the board slips. Since foilers don’t traditionally wear attached boots, staying upright is all about balance. ✦

revitalized Cozy 1970s home

The house a Realtor couldn’t bear to sell ... so she bought it!

or more than 20 years, Teresa Grant has been a real estate agent in the Forest and Smith Mountain Lake areas. When she became the listing agent for this 1970s-era house, she could envision a lovely retreat on Smith Mountain Lake. With its wide-open views of the water and a peaceful cove, she knew this property was something she had dreamed of for years.

So, instead of selling the house, she became the buyer.

“We just loved the gentleman we purchased the house from,” said Teresa. “We became kindred spirits and have kept in close contact. In fact, we kept a few pieces of furniture he left, like a chest in the loft area we use for our grandson’s toys, so that we would have some of the old house in with the new.”

Renovations all around Though the renovations were extensive, Teresa also wanted to retain some features of the existing home in order to maintain that connection with the past. The stone wall on the patio outside is the original — including its flaws, which Teresa feels just add character.

The cathedral tongue-and-groove pine ceiling on the main level and throughout the basement apartment are also original. “We love the ceilings,” said Teresa. “We wanted to work around them while adding necessary updates to the home.”

A Forest-based firm, CRM Construction, handled the renovations.

Teresa and her family even helped with some of the demolition. (While pulling up flooring and knocking down drywall gave them some fun, hands-on experience, Teresa admits it probably didn’t speed the project along!)

The home sports new LP® siding, a new roof, new windows and an enlarged partially wrap-around deck. Teresa chose 42

casement windows to open outward so that she could enjoy the cross breeze of spring and fall air. The new windows and doors also allowed more natural light to come into the house. Additionally, dozens of trees were removed to offer

a better view of the lake, sunsets and mountains this home has to offer. The color palette for the walls inside the house was also chosen for a brighter atmosphere: creams and whites, with just a touch of color for interest.

Room by room In the kitchen, DeNeal’s Cabinets of Smith Mountain Lake built custom cabinets with lighted display cases along the top edges.

The soft cream-colored cabinets with a light backsplash complement the marble countertops from Piedmont Surfaces of the Triad in Eden, N.C. To add space for additional storage, a shallow pantry was built on the side of the refrigerator, which also creates a clean delineation between the kitchen and the dining and family room area. Teresa also chose white appliances from Hailey’s Appliance in Lynchburg to make the kitchen look more spacious. Gold fixtures and a white farmhouse sink complete the fresh, high-end look.

Also on the main level is a primary bedroom and bath. A bedroom was removed to make the primary bedroom larger and to add a walk-in closet. The renovations also added extra space in the galley kitchen and bath. A pocket door divides the bedroom and bath area from the living room when privacy is needed. In the bathroom, bold flooring seems to make the small space expand. Warm pewter-colored cabinets and countertops are complemented by polished nickel fixtures. A walk-in shower is perfect for the space.

The original house didn’t have a fireplace, so the contractor built a facing with shiplap and added an electric fireplace with repurposed wood for the mantel. The flooring, along with the mantel, was purchased locally from The Floor Source. A table at one end of the room serves as a dining area. The result is a gorgeous room that the family can use to spend time together, watch television and look out over the lake.

Upstairs is a cozy loft with soft, light carpeting and custom bookshelves built into the eaves, bringing another touch of character to this warm, inviting area. For now, the space is used as a playroom when her grandson visits, but Teresa plans to add a pull-out sofa for extra sleeping to use when guests visit. The loft overlooks the family room and also has a lovely view of the lake.

Down the stairs & out to the dock When Teresa and Tray Grant were looking at this particular property, the downstairs unfinished space had particular appeal. “We thought that one of our parents might need to live with us one day in the future,” said Teresa. For now, “we both work from home, so we come downstairs in the morning before we begin our day and enjoy a cup of coffee.

We designed it to look like a different space than the upper levels, so it feels like we are on vacation when we have our morning coffee.”

To achieve that different look, Teresa’s color scheme included charcoals, whites and grays.

In the kitchenette, a slim refrigerator takes up minimal space. Dark charcoal-colored cabinets with white quartz countertops and copper fixtures create a more modern feel, though the pine ceiling, which was painted white throughout the lower level, is still quite at home. The bathroom has matte black fixtures and subway tiles. The bedroom, with a large window to let light in, is a comfortable and cozy space for family and guests who visit.

ighting trends have changed considerably over the past few decades. Advances in technology and materials allow light fixtures to do so much more than illuminate a room. Lighting can transform a space and set the tone for your aesthetic — it is the jewelry that makes a room shine.

Mishelle Brosinski of Envisions Flooring & Interiors in Wirtz carries a beautiful assortment of light fixtures. Brosinski thinks of it as the finishing touch. She notes, “Lighting sets a mood and creates an ambiance by the light it casts as well as the style, size and finish.”

As a design element Finding a unique fixture adds personality to a room.

For example, Brosinski found a chandelier made of sea glass to complement two pendants shaped like twig branches that hang over a peninsular bar in a kitchen. These three fixtures enrich the room while maintaining the organic décor the homeowners wanted. Adding these distinctive light fixtures contributed texture but stayed with the style of the natural finishes that are found throughout the home.

Choosing a few different lighting fixtures that preserve the decorating style makes a home special while keeping with the themes and look that make the interior flow seamlessly. It is important to consider scale when selecting light fixtures for a room. Light fixtures should function well for the room’s use but must be in the correct proportion.

Using two large cone-shaped pendants, black shades lined with gold, is an example of keeping the modern farmhouse black and white décor while adding a splash of color. Another trend is counter lighting in kitchens that brightens workspaces and offers a softer look in the cabinet area.

Mixed materials When choosing light fixtures, it is easy to lean toward practicality and choose the same style fixtures throughout the house. Using the same materials in each room seems cohesive but overlooks the joy of allowing each room to have its own distinctive fixtures.

Incorporating different fixture materials while maintaining your décor theme is a challenge but rewards each room with a little bling. Lighting materials offer a place to be vibrant and add eyecatching details to a room. Remember to consider cabinetry hardware and plumbing fixtures when you choose light fixtures for a room. It is important to maintain the look by sticking with a similar color, material or style so that it blends with the décor.

Mishelle offers this tip, “One of the best ways to design a lighting selection is by mixing lighting pieces.” Look for a “common thread when mixing different materials, though, to create a cohesive feeling.” To do this, consider a fixture’s style, shape and finish or color. he Link home, situated in a park-like setting of The Water’s Edge community in Penhook at Smith Mountain Lake, presents as both cozy and spectacular.

The homey vibe comes from the New England cottage-style architecture with cedar shake roofing and windows mullioned into small panes. The interior is done in a neutral color scheme: everything — walls, doors, beadboard and moldings — is painted the same light shade, producing a calming effect. Nothing cries out for undue attention.

The spectacular aspects begin with the home’s setting on a large, fairly level and mostly wooded lot. Though seemingly secluded, the home is artfully “limbed up” to allow a panoramic view of sparkling lake back-dropped by Smith Mountain’s ridge with the “V” of the dam site visible on the far end.

The WOW! factor strikes again as guests enter a dramatic front foyer that is defined by a rough-stacked stone wall forming the back of the living area’s towering fireplace. Beyond that, the living/dining areas offer window walls on two sides that proffer views of the lake beyond a veil of trees.

Drawn to the lake Built back in 1992, this is obviously a home where lake-lovers can satisfy their watery passions. Angie and Eddie Link both grew up in Bristol, Tenn., and, as kids, spent summers with their families at nearby South Holston Lake. They moved to Roanoke in 1990 and discovered the delights of SML. By 1993, they were enjoying long days on the water from their boat kept at Shoreline Marina. They both dreamed of one day being able to spend their weekends at the lake and admired the many beautiful homes gracing its shoreline.

With their two young daughters, Allison and Meredith, beginning to love life on the water, progressing to lake home ownership was pretty much a given. In 2001, they bought a suitable-for-weekending place in Craddock Creek, then upgraded to a small home in The Water’s Edge. Plying the several coves of that lovely sprawling community, they were drawn again and again to the stately New England-style residence gracing a prominent, mountain- facing point. When it came on the market in 2013, they were able to purchase it.

Making it their own Now decorated to their contemporary tastes, the home offers a number of other spectacular surprises. Look up — way up! — to be awed by a 7x7 point elk overlooking the two-story living room from above the fireplace. Harvested in Canada in 1989, it is just one of Eddie’s hunting trophies displayed in the home: two more impressive deer mounts reside upstairs in the sitting room.

The Links’ lovely home was 21 years old when they bought it, so some renovations were in order. They replaced the cedar shake roof and installed new windows, keeping the cottage style with multi-mullioned window panes.

Inside there were major changes, especially to the kitchen.

Steve Morris of Classical Design, Roanoke oversaw the design and construction, and he also enlisted the expertise of Jessica Durham, owner of magnolia in Roanoke. The renovation took most of the main level down to the studs, and the kitchen rebuild included new appliances, including a Sub Zero refrigerator and a Wolf stove sourced through Appliance Studio Inc., Roanoke plus new cabinetry, a large farm sink, a coffee maker plumbed directly to a water source, a sprawling island and new porcelain countertops and matching herringbone marble backsplash. The custom hood was designed by Classical Design. The accent wall in the kitchen mimics the island: this wall is made of custom white oak planks with a custom stain that complements the hardwood floors.

Off the entrance hallway, walls were moved to convert a powder room area into an attractive bar with wine fridge and separate beverage cooler. A powder room was still needed on the main level, of course, so space that was formerly a coat closet was expanded and repurposed accordingly. Durham selected the wallpaper (Thibaut), mirror and sconces, and Classical Design designed the floating porcelain sink with a brass faucet. Because all of this wall moving and reno work took a toll on the light oak floors, they were refinished with a darker stain, giving them new life. And while they were changing things, the Links had the laundry room renovated into a roomy, bright space for an updated washer and dryer, making laundry at the lake a pleasure rather than a chore!

A lot of house to love All in all, this is a big house: three levels, seven bedrooms, six full baths, two powder rooms and a sitting area between the two second-floor bedroom wings. The expansive lake-level includes two guest bedrooms and a gathering area with a pool table, pingpong table, a second stone fireplace with a large television mounted above and a sizeable wet bar. This space features a painting by Katrina Bell and a sectional and accessories from magnolia. Here also is an artfullyarranged lake-fun photo wall that clearly shows the water skiing and wakeboarding prowess of family members and friends.

Even dogs are pictured having a rollicking good time at the lake. “Our girls spent their summers here,” said Eddie, “and we hope that one day their kids can do the same.”

Due to the generous lot on which the Link home was built (just over 1.6 acres), the original owners were able to site the large dock in a small cove at one end of the 500-foot waterfront. As a result, the view from the home is just lake and mountain — beautifully unobstructed lake and mountain — yet the large dock still offers plenty of seating area and an ample base for on- and inwater activities. All told, there are two boat slips, a Personal Water Craft ramp, a large living-roomlike covered seating area, an uncovered area with Pottery Barn lounge chairs for sunning and relaxing, and a wide, and thus stable, floater.

A large main deck wraps around on two sides of the home: one facing manicured woods and the other that looks toward the lake and mountain. here’s something magical about eating grapes and cheese on a checkered blanket. After all, a picnic is just a casual meal…with a view! Portability is key when packing food for a day at the beach or on the boat, and divided food containers are a versatile and convenient way to prepare and enjoy your snacks. They are designed to compartmentalize and carry different food items conveniently. For your next day on the lake, go all-in on the theme and offer your companions a treat from a “snackle box.”

What is a snackle box?

What started as a “parenting hack” for serving Goldfish® crackers and Teddy Grahams® to backseat riders in a minivan has now become an adult’s portable gourmet snacking smorgasbord. Inspired by Bento® boxes — traditional Japanese food boxes with various compartments that allow different types of food to be neatly separated within the same container — 74

creators on Pinterest and TikTok have figured out a way to make charcuterie to-go by packing a fishing-tackle box. But, instead of holding hooks, lures and bobbers, they fill them with cheese, crackers and other easy-to-eat treats. Search online for the hashtag #SnackleBox, and you’ll find endless recipes, suggestions and recommendations for customizing your own.

How to create a snackle box While the idea is certainly clever and visually appealing, there are concerns about packing food in a container intended to organize fishing gear. Chief among these concerns: n Is the plastic food-safe? n What’s the best way to keep the food properly chilled? n How do you clean a snackle box?

Rather than taking a literal interpretation of the snackle box idea and shopping for your portable food container in the sporting goods aisle, your best bet is to use a stainless steel or food-grade plastic or silicone divided container (because “glass” and “outside” don’t always work well together). How can you tell if a plastic container is food-safe? Flip it over and check the recycling numbers. The safest plastic containers for food will show the numbers 1, 2, 4 or 5. This indicates the plastic is “BPAfree.” Soft, flexible and cloudy plastic containers are less likely to contain BPA, an industrial chemical that can seep into your food and beverages.

Keep your snackle box in an insulated, ice-filled cooler to further enhance food safety.

As for washing up afterward, look for containers that have removable dividers. They will allow more flexibility in customizing the nooks for different shaped and sized goodies, and it will be so much easier to clean! And, of course, good food safety includes washing your hands and using utensils for shared foods. Treats to reel in your guests After formulating a plan to keep your goodie boxes properly chilled and out of the sun, it’s time to prepare some bite-sized noshes. Balance your food offerings and try to include fruits, veggies, proteins, whole grains and some sweet treats. Here are a few ways to tackle the job and lure your companions in to enjoy an afternoon snack: n Classic Charcuterie: Cheese, crackers, nuts, dried fruits, cornichon pickles and dried meats like salami and pepperoni n Mediterranean Munchies: Hummus and veggies: carrots, cucumbers, celery, baby bell peppers, cherry tomatoes and olives n Sliders and Pinwheels: Avoid using mayo on these mini-sandwiches. n Veggie Sushi Rolls: Cucumbers and carrots hold up well, but the avocado might turn slightly brown. It will still be tasty, though! n Trail Mix: Nuts, dried fruits, yogurt-covered raisins and granola n Ants on a Log: Pretzel rods or celery stuffed with peanut butter and dotted with raisins or chocolate chips are old-fashioned lunch box staples. n Fan-favorite Fruits: Apples and grapes won’t get as mushy as fragile fruits like bananas, berries and peaches. To keep apple slices from turning brown, soak them in lemon or orange juice or a citrusy soda pop for a few minutes. Melon chunks are a summertime staple but prone to making a watery mess. It’s probably best to give them their own container.

With an eye on portion control and convenience, plus the ability to customize for dietary needs, a snackle box is a clever way to organize your snacks for an outdoor day. hether home is a city apartment or townhouse, a suburban house or a house by the lake, most of us crave a space with some degree of privacy.

Fortunately, erecting a fence or wall is not the only way to create a retreat. Screening out prying eyes and hiding unlovely sights can be accomplished with strategically placed plants, both inside and out.

Inside out While potted plants work wonders as sight barriers and dividers inside open concept apartments and on patios, hedges are the most popular screens for outside spaces.

Shrubs are the leaders in effective screens, but other plants such as trees, vines and ornamental grasses may also be used. One of the major advantages that growing various plants to form hedges has over building fences is that plants are likely to attract birds and bees and will change with the seasons, adding greater landscape interest.

The Spruce, a leading online source about all kinds of plants, cautions growers of hedges to do their homework before planting. Important considerations include the following: n Property size (a larger yard = taller hedges) n Hardiness zone (Zone 7 for Central and Southwest Virginia) n Amount of sun n Type of soil (soiltest.vt.edu) n Relative need for full screening With the above information in mind, shopping for plants can begin in earnest. Remember to factor into your selection of plants the time it will take to maintain them; some require more care than others. Annual or semi-annual pruning is key to shaping shrubbery into hedges, especially fast-growing varieties that can quickly get out of hand. Be sure to prune for height as well as width and overall shape, and consider personal aesthetics. Some homeowners prefer the look of a tight, dense, sculpted hedge, whereas others lean toward a looser, airier and more naturally shaped screen. Let these specially curated cultivars turn your property into a private oasis of calm.

Fast-growing shrubs If you need to quickly screen your property, the Chinese fringe flower is an evergreen shrub which grows at the rate of 2 feet annually, has delicate, perfumed blooms and is deer resistant.

It likes acidic soil and grows well in full sun to partial shade.

Another fast-growing shrub prized for its color is the Diablo cultivar of the Common Ninebark. This deer-resistant shrub with burgundy leaves may reach its full height of 8 to 10 feet in only one year, tolerates clay soil and grows well in full sun to partial shade. An olfactory treasure that blooms in springtime, the Common Lilac grows abut 2 feet per year in loamy soil and full sun to partial shade, reaches a mature height of 8-15 feet and has the added benefit of being deer resistant, an important attribute even in suburban locales.

Shade-tolerant shrubs There are several shrubs that grow especially well in Virginia’s mostly moderate climate. One of the most popular is the Yew, which will thrive no matter how sunlight-deprived, and it can, surprisingly, also tolerate full sun. This hardy shrub grows only a foot per year but may reach an eventual height of 4 to 60 feet, depending on variety. This makes the shrub particularly wellsuited for homeowners who expect to stay in their homes for a lifetime. The fact that all parts of this shrub are toxic means they are highly deer resistant, as well.

The green glossy leaves of the Spotted Laurel make it look as if it has been splattered with yellow paint, earning it the nickname of the gold dust plant. This shrub produces bright red berries in the wintertime and grows to 6-10 feet in height and 5-9 feet in width.

The larger Rhododendron evergreen shrub is prized for its vivid violet clusters of flowers in spring, summer and fall, plus it has a mature size of 2-20 feet in height and 3-15 feet in width.

Shrubs with special attributes A smaller, flowering evergreen shrub that requires minimal maintenance is the Daphne. This plant typically grows into a rounded shape, making pruning an easy job. It blooms in spring, thrives in full sun or partial shade and is deer resistant.

Rather than stay evergreen, the Firepower Nandina changes color as the months pass, going from green to bright red and never dropping all its leaves. The more petite varieties make good low hedge plants and are adaptable from full sun to full shade and may easily be pruned into various shapes.

Prized for its slow growth and limited size, the Wintercreeper of the Euonymus family has vibrant bluegreen leaves with serrated white edges and grows in a round shape. Its best feature is its tolerance of drought, heat or cold. With the selection of just-right plants, a private retreat can be yours. ✦

Lake Safety 101 Be prepared and use these tips to ensure a great day on the lake

BY N I CO L E VA N E S S E L S T Y N Smith Mountain Lake offers an idyllic backdrop for recreational activities on the water. From boating and fishing to kayaking and jet skiing, there’s no shortage of how to enjoy the water.

However, safety should always be the top concern when venturing out onto the lake. While no one likes to think about safety concerns when having fun with friends and family, a great day on the lake can quickly become the opposite without some preparations.

Life jackets Life jackets keep you afloat in case of an accident and could mean the difference between life and death. According to the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR), all children under age 13 must wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket while on a boat, and the boat should have one life jacket per person on board.

Life jackets come in three types: Type I life jackets are best for offshore and are designed to turn an unconscious person face-up in the water; Type II life jackets are for calm inland waters and will turn some unconscious wearers face-up; 86

Type III life jackets are intended for conscious, competent swimmers in calm waters. For most recreational boating and water activities found at Smith Mountain Lake, Type II or Type III life jackets would be the ones to choose.

Follow these tips from DWR to ensure a proper fit: n Check the manufacturer’s label for information on size and type of use. n Try on the life jacket to check fit, which should be snug but not tight. Life jackets should not ride up over the chin or ears when in the water. n Fasten the straps and buckles. Check for wear and tear. n Lift your arms over your head. If you can turn your head left, right and over your shoulder, you have proper movement.

But if the life jacket rides up to your chin or gets in the way of moving your head, it’s too large. n To test a child’s life jacket, have them stand with their arms at their sides while you tug up on the jacket by the shoulders. If the jacket moves higher than the child’s ears, it’s too big and the child could slip out.

Boating safety Though a key component, water safety goes beyond just wearing the right life jacket. For boaters, understanding the rules of the water — right of way, speed limits and licensure requirements — is vital to avoiding accidents and conflicts and to ensuring enjoyment for everyone.

Smith Mountain Lake had the most boating incidents of any body of water in Virginia in 2022, according to a report from WDBJ7.com. With increased adherence to no-wake zones, speed limits, no-alcohol consumption, staying to the right of the channel and passing boats properly, boaters can help make the lake safer for everyone.

All operators of boats with a motor of 10 horsepower or greater registered in the state of Virginia must take a boat safety course, according to DWR. Classes are available throughout the year and are free; check availability on the DWR website. Once completed, boaters must carry their license with them when operating their watercraft.

The Smith Mountain Lake Boating Association’s website has additional information on resources, regulations and boater education courses. It’s important to stay up to date on boater safety, such as knowing the 2023 law requiring boaters to slow to a no-wake speed when they are within 200 feet of a law enforcement or emergency vessel displaying flashing lights.

Boaters also need to be mindful of individuals on personal watercrafts (PWC) such as jet skis, kayaks and paddleboards, and boaters should not pull tubes in high traffic areas of the lake. Passing a paddleboarder, for example, on a boat or jet ski and creating a high wake is a recipe for an incident.

Personal watercraft Jet skis, kayaks and paddleboards are popular at Smith Mountain Lake, but operating them comes with rules and responsibilities, too.

Just like on highways, motorized PWC operators must adhere to speed limits, maintain a safe distance from other watercraft and obey right-of-way rules. For those on nonmotorized PWCs, it’s advisable to stay close to the shoreline to avoid wakes from motorized watercrafts and boats.

Smith Mountain Lake features many inlets and quieter sections that are perfect for those who enjoy paddling.

Weather 101 While no one likes to think of it, emergencies can arise when you’re out on the water. And if they do happen, it’s best to know how to respond.

If a storm approaches, get everyone back onto the boat if they are swimming, tubing or using a personal watercraft.

Make sure everyone is wearing their life jackets. If you can’t get back to your own dock or where you launched, head to the closest, safe, public dock immediately, and seek shelter away from the lake. Those on personal watercrafts – jet skis, kayaks, paddleboards — should also be wearing life jackets and head to the closest, safe shoreline or dock for shelter away from the lake.

Your time on and around the lake should be focused on making lasting memories, not tending to emergency situations.

lot of planning, advice from design experts and assembling a strong construction team: those are the requirements for successfully building a well-functioning “dream home.”

And Ben and Sarah Price definitely have built such a home! They describe it as “...a modern, Craftsman-style timber-framed lake home,” but that hardly begins to cover it.

How they came to the lake Although Ben and Sarah met during second grade in Blacksburg, they only started dating during their college years — a long-distance relationship between her University of Tennessee campus and his School of Building Construction at Virginia Tech.

Both of their families had spent a lot of time at Smith Mountain Lake. “So SML has always been a place where we made special memories,” Sarah says. Once married, the couple rented vacation houses, then a condo at Bernard’s Landing — and in 2019 bought a unit there.

Despite the terrific view of Smith Mountain, Ben notes, it quickly proved too small for all the friends and family with whom they loved sharing their lake time. Early in the COVID summer of 2020, they convinced a developer to sell them a 3-acre gently sloping parcel in Sailor’s Cove where he was planning to build a spec house. The couple had become friends with dock builder Lynn Swain, and Ben promptly put him to work creating their dock.

Envisioning the house Sarah’s focus went straight to the future lake house; ever-soorganized, she searched out floor plans and exterior treatments that appealed to her. She created a photo album of features and décor she especially liked, and the couple took their ideas to Balzer & Associates architectural firm.

Ben and his business partners own a commercial masonry company (Southeastern Contracting, Inc.) and a commercial general contracting company (Green Valley Builders, Inc.) and had worked closely with Balzer & Associates on many largescale commercial and multifamily projects, including designs for schools, hospitals and athletic stadiums. They had also worked with StreamLine TimberFrame in Floyd on multi-family and student housing projects with dramatic wood accents, and that played heavily into the home’s soaring timber structural elements.

With their two-dimensional drawings, Ben and Sarah decided to engage John and Theresa Dorlini of Circle Design in Roanoke who, along with Junior Designer Emily Borg, transformed the plans to three-dimensional virtual renderings that allowed the Prices to view spaces shown on their plans as if they were actually in the rooms.

“Circle Design collaborated with us and Balzer and further enhanced our overall design. They took it to the next level and elevated the style of the house with well thought-out spaces, color palettes and textures,” Ben says. They used experience and their “eye” for dramatic accents to suggest shelving, beams and other ceiling accents, lighting, traffic flow and clever storage solutions.

From Sarah’s photos, they sensed her style and color preferences and used them to guide the choices of wall and trim colors, accent pieces, furniture and art. “They really nailed it,” Sarah summarizes. “Everything they brought in fit the house and my taste perfectly.”

Homey but spacious This is an “open-plan” home where arriving guests look straight through front-door glass to dramatic views of Smith Mountain. The living, dining and kitchen areas are all one big room, but the living and dining areas feature vaulted timberframed ceilings while the dramatic kitchen is beneath a lower shiplap ceiling, making the space more “homey.” Circle Design suggested natural-stained beams as kitchen ceiling accents to retain some of the timber-frame drama in the kitchen area.

Another formative Circle Design change was the use of a wide triple window over the sink, with one panel sliding open to a pass-through shelf that serves the upper deck entertaining areas. Floating shelves in a corner near the sink allow for display of kitchen accents. Nearby is a pantry with lots of storage and a second refrigerator and farm sink. Near the garage is a combination laundry and homemaker’s office where Sarah can multi-task her volunteer role as PTA president for their children’s school. Tucked under a laundry-sorting counter is a clever pot-filler-style cold water spout for filling the dogs’ water bowls in place — no sloshes onto the floors!

Yet another Circle Design suggestion is the dramatic floor-to-ceiling glassed-in wine and champagne rack that showcases 76 bottles under adjustable LED mood lights. On the main level is the parents’ bedroom with the lake view seemingly just beyond the occupants’ toes. A lux bathroom with his and her sinks and a freestanding soaker tub leads to a generous primary closet with built-in dresser drawers and shoe storage.

Above the roomy three-bay garage is a Circledesigned bunk room with two queen-sized beds on floor level and four elevated singles, each with its own stairway-style ladder. Every bed has its own reading light and phone charger. A roomy bathroom, sitting area with TV and a kitchenette with microwave, sink and drink fridge complete the younger-generation’s chillout and sleep-in space.

A stairway down from the main level leads to a lounging/TV/game room with full kitchen. Near the mirrored bar sits a massive quartz “flex table” with chairs to seat up to 16 at snack or meal time. A removable clamp-on pingpong net just begs for preor post-pizza matches between friends and cousins.

Flooring here, like in the rest of the home, is luxury vinyl tile, totally unphased by wet feet, dripping swimsuits or doggy paws. Also on the lake level are three nautically-themed guest suites, each stocked with a “Welcome!” basket loaded with snacks and bottled water. A nearby workout room features a strength training machine and a wall-mounted radiant heater that can quickly crank the room to a 120-degree “hot yoga” atmosphere.

Making the most of the view Jaws drop when guests glance out the floor-to-ceiling lake-level windows at what appears to be lake water lapping from the base of Smith Mountain right to the edge of the home’s huge flagstone patio. The effect is cleverly achieved by a large vanishing-edge swimming pool, plastered in a blue-green shade that matches the lake’s typical coloration.

“I was a bit skeptical of this idea,” Ben now admits, “but National Pools nailed it.”

Other fun touches to the pool area are three half-submerged sunlounging chairs, a wall for jumping off into the 8-foot-deep water, squirting fountains and gas fire bowls that, according to Ben, create a tropical beach effect at night.

All of this is surrounded by a large flagstone patio with a fire pit, seating, tables, two swinging day beds and a covered outdoor kitchen with grill, pizza oven and live-edge granite countertops. A hot tub sits to one side under main level decking that provides shade on sunny days and rain protection during a downpour.

Thirty mildly-sloping yards beyond the catch trough for the pool’s vanishing edge, the beach and dock await. Like the home, the dock features Western red cedar timber-frame trusses. Navy blue siding with white trim completes the match to the home’s subdued nautical theme.

The home construction took 15 months and was finished in May 2023. With his own company as the general contractor, Ben went for “high-performance envelope” construction — including 2"x 6" studs to allow for generous cellulose insulation in walls, sprayed-in attic insulation and tankless on-demand water heaters.

“We feel very fortunate and thankful to be here and to have our kids growing up at the lake,” Ben notes as he details several construction tasks that the kids helped complete. “In many ways, this house has been a family project from day one ... We will always be grateful to the designers, vendors and skilled tradesmen who helped make this project successful. Planning a pool house

ools are popular for gathering and entertaining, but adding a pool house can be an afterthought. Rather than seeing the pool house as just an add-on, consider planning up front to make the most of this space for storage, everyday swims and hosting gatherings.

Where to start Mark Maslow of Southern Landscape Group shared his advice based on more than 20 years of experience and 60+ pool houses in his portfolio. He said to begin with a few key questions: n What do you want it to do? What is the main purpose? n Who do you entertain and how do you want to plan for that?

Entertaining a group of adults is slightly different than entertaining kids under the age of 10. n Do you need more shade or a covered lounge area? n Will you be using it day, night or both? n How much outdoor living do you do (or would like to do) near your pool? n Do you want to use the pool house as a means of extending your living space in early spring and late fall or maybe even year-round? n Most importantly, do you want bathrooms and/or changing areas in the pool house? n What about an outdoor shower?

Once you determine the function of your pool house, you can start nailing down the details. “People don’t use things when they aren’t functional and convenient,” says Maslow.

Plumbing matters Start with the plumbing – the bathrooms and an outdoor shower. Do you want to be able to use it year round or will it need to be winterized?

Do you need a place to rinse down or an enclosed shower with privacy that functions as a full shower? If the latter is the case, privacy is a big factor in placing and designing your outdoor shower. You won’t want anyone from the house being able to see who’s in the shower. A full shower will require a bench, hooks for towels as well as a drain that moves the water away from the pool area. You don’t want the shower water pooling up on the patio.

Amenities to consider Once you’ve got the restrooms and changing areas sorted, you can begin to think about other functions for your pool house. n Food prep. A main component to any form of entertainment is food. How do you want to approach the cooking and preparing of food while you’re entertaining outdoors? A pool house can provide a number of conveniences so you’re not having to haul food and drinks from the main house. n Finishes. When it comes to the interior finishes of your pool house, you’ll want features that can handle wet feet and towels. Tile floors work well with water, as well as cooking and serving. n Convenience. Think about incorporating charging stations into your pool house for easy access. The more amenities you incorporate into your pool house, the more you can cut down on visitor foot traffic through the more private living areas in the main house. n Lighting. The exterior lighting for the area is another big consideration. Will you want ambient lighting, architectural lighting or will you need floodlights for a nighttime volleyball game in the pool? n Storage. Pools require two types of storage: “Clean” storage for floats, towels, pool games and the like and “dirty” storage which are things like pool chemicals, robot vacuums, skimmer nets and other pool maintenance tools that typically make a bit of a mess.

Placing your pool house You’ll want to orient your pool house so that any large openings like gable ends or an open-air pavilion don’t directly face oncoming weather. Avoid placing it due southwest, which is affected by the heat of summer afternoons.

You’ll want some sort of barriers from the sun, wind and rain, although you will also want some sort of air flow, particularly on hot summer days. Also, you won’t want to block the view of the lake from your chaise lounge by the pool. When adding shrubs and fencing be mindful not to obscure the view.

Perhaps the thing to keep most in mind when setting out to build a pool house is that it is a building with an entertaining purpose. At the end of the day, the more functional and convenient it is, the more fun you will have with it. A little thought on the front end will give you years of enjoyment. ✦

Pack a basket full of treats and head out for the day

icnic season is almost upon us, and we’re ready for some fun in the sun! What better way to enjoy Smith Mountain Lake’s scenery than with a picnic? Whether you go to the park with friends or to your own backyard with the kiddos, let’s pack and play with these four easy and classic recipes. I went a little nostalgic with these recipes because I hope your picnic is memory inducing, unpretentious and reminds you of the good times you had picnicking growing up.

Roll-Ups with Ham and Havarti 2 Tablespoons coconut oil 1 cup of flour Pinch of kosher salt 1 egg, beaten 2 Tablespoons of butter, melted

3/4 cup + 1 Tbsp. whole milk 12 slices Havarti 12 slices ham, thinly sliced

Preheat the oven to 400°F. Lightly grease a casserole dish with oil. Sift flour and salt into a bowl. Make a well in the center and add the egg and melted butter. Slowly whisk in milk to form a batter. Set aside for 30 mins. Add oil to a frying pan, and heat over medium heat. Spoon in 3 Tablespoons of batter, tilting the pan back and forth to coat the bottom. Cook until lightly golden, and then flip over and cook for another minute. Repeat the process until you’ve used all of the batter, adding a bit of oil to the pan so the pancakes don’t stick.

Stack each between parchment sheets until complete. Top each pancake with cheese, and place a slice of ham on top.

Roll up tightly and place side by side in the dish. Bake for about 15 mins. They can be served cold or wrapped to keep warm for the picnic!

Spring Vegetable Salad with Creamy Herb Dressing 6 radishes, sliced thin (½ cup) 1 package of frozen peas, cooked and cooled 2 Tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped 2 ounces feta, crumbled 2 ounces parmesan, shaved

1 head butter lettuce, chopped 1 cucumber, peeled into ribbons (I use a peeler or mandoline slicer) 6 ounces asparagus, cut into bite-size pieces

HERB DRESSING 1/4 cup mayonnaise 1/4 cup sour cream 1/4 cup Greek yogurt 2 Tablespoons olive oil 1 garlic clove (grated) 1/8 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon fresh dill 1/4 teaspoon fresh parsley 1/8 teaspoon salt Pinch black pepper 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice

To a large bowl, add the butter lettuce, cucumber, asparagus, radishes, peas and parsley. Top with crumbled feta and parmesan shavings. Drizzle with herb dressing.

HERB DRESSING: Whisk together all ingredients in a

Cherry Cobbler 4 cups sweet cherries (pitted) 1 cup sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon lemon zest 6 Tablespoons salted butter 1 cup milk 2 teaspoons sugar 1 cup flour

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Slice butter into pieces and place in the bottom of a 9x13 baking dish. Put in the oven while preheating. Once melted, remove from the oven. In a separate bowl, add cherries, sugar and lemon zest. Stir to combine. In a different bowl, whisk together the batter ingredients: flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Stir in the milk. Pour the cherry mixture over the melted butter in the pan. Drizzle batter over the top, and sprinkle with sugar. Bake for 35-40 minutes or until lightly golden on top.

No-Bake Cheesecake 1/2 cup heavy cream 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese 1/2 cup granulated sugar 2/3 cup sour cream

2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest 1 Oreo pie crust 1 cup berries (your choice) Whipped cream

Pour heavy cream into a bowl. Using a stand mixer or hand mixer, whip until stiff peaks form. Set aside. In the bowl of a stand mixer, fitted with paddle attachment, beat cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Beat in sour cream, vanilla and lemon zest until combined, scraping sides of bowl as needed. Fold whipped heavy cream into cream cheese mixture. Pour the mixture into the pie crust. Cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate until firm to overnight. Before you take the leap, consider finances, regulations and boundaries

hen Holley Scheffel and her husband, Steve, bought their lakefront home in Huddleston in 2017, it was the epitome of what you’d call a fixer upper. But over time, and with the help of lots of handy friends, the Scheffels transformed the cottage into a cozy, upgraded abode — an abode they later decided to share with out-of-towners as a short-term rental through Airbnb and VRBO. On the other side of the rental industry — but just down the road from Scheffel — is 106

Companies like his provide a host of services to homeowners who want to be as stress-free and hands-off as possible when they rent out their properties.

Whichever path you are considering, Scheffel and Childress agree that there is a lot to consider before letting strangers into your space.

Here, they highlight some of the top things you need to know before dipping your toe into the Smith Mountain Lake rental market.

Get your finances (and expectations) in order The reason most homeowners decide to rent their homes is simple — extra money. And in the Smith Mountain Lake area over the past five years, many people have had that same idea.

According to Bedford County Community Development Director Jordan Mitchell, there are currently 443 registered short-term rentals in the locality, up from 224 five years ago.

Scheffel (who is also a licensed real estate agent) has noticed the increase. It was more difficult to get bookings after the pandemic: “Be prepared to be competitive,” she says.

Childress also cautions: if you have a rental at the lake, you can’t rely on a steady income stream year-round.

“We are very seasonal here,” says Childress. “Really your prime season is going to be in the summertime and the late spring and early fall.”

You also shouldn’t expect to pocket 100 percent of your earnings.

“You will have to use some of the proceeds to reinvest back in your home to fix things and make upgrades,” Scheffel says. smlhomemagazine.com

Other financial checklist items include getting a commercial insurance policy, putting your earnings in a separate bank account (or LLC) and filling out tax paperwork with your local Commissioner of Revenue’s office.

Research, understand and follow local regulations The next — but most tedious — step in creating a short-term rental is doing your zoning homework.

As the short-term rental industry has grown exponentially here and across the country, localities have had to take a closer look at tightening the rules and regulations regarding these properties.

For example, in 2023, Bedford County passed new changes to its zoning ordinance related to short-term rentals. Some of those changes include registering yearly, submitting a management plan and advertising the accurate number of occupants for the home’s septic system.

Also, be sure to check the private covenants in your neighborhood to make sure there are no restrictions for short-term rentals.

Focus on major operational decisions One of the biggest issues rental property owners wrestle with is whether to allow pets and what other amenities to offer.

“Typically, your most searched features are homes with hot tubs and homes that are pet friendly,” Childress says. “But there are drawbacks to both of these. There are higher utility and maintenance costs associated with hot tubs, and pets will understandably lead to more wear and tear.”

You may want to consider a damage deposit.

Another major operational component is figuring out who is going to clean your rental after each booking — which is another expense.

“That’s probably one of the biggest obstacles we have in the area,” Childress says. “We are not a heavily populated area so there’s not an abundance of cleaners or people for maintenance. That’s another perk of homeowners who work with rental companies like us.”

Streamlining how your guests will check-in and check-out is also a top item on the to-do list. Scheffel opted for no-contact check-in and installed keypads on her doors. She changes the code after each guest.

Set your boundaries Childress encourages owners to keep as much space open as possible for tenants to use.

“The less you lock off, the better,” he says, adding that this includes garages and dock houses, which can be nice amenities to offer tenants if they are usable.

Of course, you should find somewhere in your home to store supplies — such as cleaning products.

Scheffel has two locked closets that her cleaning team can access.

She also recommends removing anything from the home that you want to see again. While it’s few and far between in the rental world, sometimes things disappear.

“Before rental season starts, take video footage of your rental for insurance purposes, and you can confirm if anything goes missing,” she says.

What about a boat rental?

It’s a good idea for short-term rental owners to provide information about boat rentals in the Smith Mountain Lake area — as well as an overview of the regulations.

“I know everybody wants to get on the water and have a good time, but if you are not safe, you can get hurt,” says Jake Blair of Parrot Cove Boat Rentals.

According to Blair, anyone without a boating license can get a temporary license after watching a 15-minute video about safety and navigation rules.

Blair also says it’s important for renters to know that anyone 13 years of age or younger must be wearing a Coast Guard-approved life jacket at all times. For those 14 and over, a life jacket must be carried on the boat.

Prepare for wear and tear “Most renters take care of the home just like it’s theirs. But there’s always a couple of renters every year that slip through the cracks,” Childress says. “Even in those cases, it’s typically just a home that’s left dirtier than usual.”

Scheffel adds, “Renting out your home is not for everybody. You have to be OK with knowing there is going to be damage.”

She describes normal wear and tear as scratches on the walls or someone accidentally breaking a plate. Larger issues — such as deep tire tracks in the lawn or breaking a hot tub due to misuse — would be something you would need to address.

Childress says operators should also expect higher utility costs.

“People want to use the property they are renting. They aren’t going to be as conscientious as the homeowner will be with the lights being off and the thermostat being highly controlled,” he explains.

As strange as it sounds, he also recommends having a back-up grill. This is one of the top items they have to replace due to wear and tear, and you don’t want to leave renters hanging, especially in the summer season.

If something important breaks or there is a big issue in the rental, your renters will need help quickly. Be prepared to be on-call or use a property manager that has an emergency line.

Communicate clearly and honestly on your listing For short-term rental operators listing on websites such as Airbnb, professional photos and clear descriptions are a must. You should show every room in the house at minimum and multiple angles of larger entertaining spaces and outside.

“I am super clear and intentional with what I write in my listing because my reviews are what sell my listing,” Scheffel says. “So if I’m overselling something and people get there and say, ‘wait a minute, this wasn’t in the pictures or the description,’ then I’m setting myself up for negative reviews.” ✦

one are the days of clunky, unsightly kitchen appliances! Nowadays, there are many options for the design and materials for the staple kitchen appliances in your home, and the range hood is no exception.

While some people prefer to keep the range hood minimal and discreet, others choose to make it a focal point and create the kitchen’s overall aesthetic. If you are planning a kitchen renovation, or simply looking to add a bit of flair to your cooking space, a dazzling range hood might be an unexpected place to start.

Design and styling There are three main styles of range hoods: under cabinet, wall mount and island range hoods. No matter the style, range hoods all serve the purpose of providing ventilation. These appliances pull smoke, grease and other cooking fumes out and away from your kitchen while circulating clean air back through the room.

You can get creative with different design concepts and materials to find the perfect style of range cover for your home. Let’s discuss a few range hood options that offer bold shapes, sleek designs and unique materials.

n Tiled. A tiled hood is a fun, modern way to showcase an otherwise primitive kitchen. While some may think this material is a bit too flashy or trendy, a brass range hood is actually quite nice and adds a warmth and depth of character to your kitchen. Paired with brass kitchen hardware for cohesion, this timeless range cover makes a bold statement without being too gaudy. n Copper. A classic choice, copper adds instant warmth to the kitchen. You might also choose to go with a zinc option with copper bands. n Wood. Warm and inviting, a wooden range hood adds a nice earthy touch. If you love the modern farmhouse aesthetic, try a shiplap board to cover your range hood for a bit of rustic charm. Or, if farmhouse design isn’t your style, you might like to try a tambour-style hood. This hood gives a warm and eclectic mid-century modern feel. With contrasting brass hardware and finishes, your kitchen will feel fun and inviting. n Color. Don’t be afraid to add a bold pop of color with your range hood. A striking color can draw the eye and stand as the focal point in an otherwise neutral kitchen. n Box shaped. While many hoods remain curved, box shapes are also trending, especially in metallic finishes. n Exposed duct. Choosing to expose the range duct may seem off-putting at first, but it can give your kitchen some interesting lines and a robust industrial aesthetic. You can choose to leave the duct in stainless steel, or maybe a matte black finish, or even try a bright color to make it evident that you are purposefully showcasing this feature. n Cylindrical hood. This sleek design feels fresh and modern. It’s a great option for someone who is going for a more minimalist look, or wants to show off a beautiful tile backsplash.

Cleaning tips While range hoods are designed to keep your kitchen clean, they can’t magically make all of the gunk disappear. Over time, all that excess splattered grease can build up on your hood; that’s why it’s important to clean them regularly.

Unlike the filters in the vent that can be taken out to clean or replace, your range hood will probably need a bit of elbow grease to cut through grime. To clean your range hood, start with cleaning around the filter area and the lights (if you have them). Using warm water and a mild dish soap, immerse a sponge or cloth into the solution and wring out any excess water.

Then get to work wiping down the dirtiest parts of the hood.

If soap and water don’t cut it, you might try something a bit stronger like a vinegar and baking soda solution or a degreaser product, such as Krud Kutter or Simple Green. When cleaning please be mindful of the material of your range hood. You don’t want to use anything abrasive on metal finishes that will leave scratches or a solution that will tarnish the finishing of the hood. It’s always best to do your research and carefully read the product labels before cleaning.

Going nuts for good causes Local church shells out more than $400,000 for community charities

or more than 20 years, Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Moneta has been selling specialty peanuts to fund local nonprofit organizations and mission projects. “We’ve cooked, shipped and packaged more than 250,000 jars of nuts,” says Charlie Walker, one of the church volunteers. The church website (bethlehemunitedmethodist.org/a-nutty-idea) says they’ve raised more than $400,000 since 1999.

Three crews of six people each cook the peanuts in a building behind the church. “We call it the Nut House,” says Walker. “It’s a real social event when we cook, usually about twice a month. We sell a case of 12 jars for $30 and we’ve held that price for the last 15 years.”

The crews package and ship the cases of peanuts, while individual jars are sold at the church or directly through Walker himself. “We have business customers, and we supply weddings, anniversaries and other parties,” he notes. “We have lots of repeat customers.”

Nuttin’ better For the businesses that sell the peanuts, the church uses a side label. For individual sales, the label is on the lid of the jar. “There’s no extra cost for the label,” says Walker. “You can put ‘Merry Christmas from the Smiths’ or whatever type of personalization you want.” Customers can opt for several different personalized labels, even when purchasing the case of peanuts.

The church volunteers use Virginia peanuts and fry them in oil in a deep fryer for several minutes. Then, they pour the nuts into bowls and remove the excess oil with paper towels. Next, they stir in the specialty flavoring and package them in jars. Customers have the choice of six flavors: unsalted, salted, Cajun (hot, but not too hot), Down by the Bay (Old Bay seasoning), Gold Dominion (butter-flavored salt) and Smokin’ Joe (the hot one!).

oey and Dan Shorts moved from Los Angeles to Smith Mountain Lake in 2018 to be closer to family in Pennsylvania and Ohio. They saw great potential in the lake home they purchased even though it needed substantial updating.

Decorating trends in 1979, when the home was built, included natural wood everywhere – on walls, ceilings, floors and as door and window trim. The home was sited high on a steep lot overlooking Gills Creek, in dense woods. Towering trees not only severely limited its lake views but also kept light from pouring in the lovely large windows. That shading, plus all the unpainted wood inside, made the house seem dark and somewhat confining.

“At first glance, I didn’t even want to go in,” Zoey confesses. “Dan, however, saw the property’s potential.

After a closer look and walk-through, so did I.”

Renovation through redecoration Less than a month before Zoey and Dan relocated from California, contractor Ed Vaughn began the updating process for the Shorts’ lake home. Using email and FaceTime, Zoey peppered Ed with her ideas for remodeling, including a custom stairway and railing design from Carolina Stair Supply like she had seen on Pinterest.

“Removing the dark wood of the former staircase was important in brightening up the house,” Zoey notes. The airy new railing uses white newels connected with horizontal black wrought iron balusters and extends to the second floor balcony.

While their update didn’t include knocking out walls á la HGTV, it was quite amazing how changing colors opened things up. Dark wood on several sloped ceilings was painted white, creating a “shiplap” look overhead. Dark cherry kitchen cabinets were brightened up with white paint; all interior doors were replaced with contemporary wood panel doors, and updated trim was painted white.

Once the couple was on site, they dug in to help complete the makeover. Zoey decided the brick fireplaces on the main and lower levels needed a new look. She chose the colors and did the repainting. A portion of a brick fireplace wall downstairs was covered over with wall board. New matte-finish hardwood flooring was installed on the main level, and luxury vinyl tile — highly forgiving for guests with drippy swimsuits and long-nailed dogs — was used throughout the lower level.

Looking out to the lake “Every room of this house has a lake view,” Dan proudly points out. The primary bedroom, conveniently located on the main floor, has large windows on the lake side, but the small, high window above the bed was darkened by a stained glass lake scene. Dan and Zoey did away with that as well as stained glass from two other windows in the house.

“We still have them stored,” Dan says, “and will one day figure out how to reuse them.”

Besides its awesome lake view, the primary suite has another focal point: a large, rock fireplace that dominates the wall at the foot of the bed. A “before” photo of the adjoining primary bath from its dark and dingy days is nearly unrecognizable as the same room converted to bright and inviting by white walls and cabinets.

Descending to the lower level, one can’t help but stop to marvel at a built-in-wine-rackturned-bookcase that Zoey, who clearly inherited “designer genes” from her art teacher parents, has populated with colorful books slanting this way and that.

The lower level invites guests to have a seat on a furniture grouping centered around the brick fireplace that Zoey painted.

An adjacent former U-shaped bar forced partakers to sit with their backs toward the lake-facing windows. A reconfiguration allows for enjoying the views while imbibing — far better space utilization.

Nearby is Zoey’s unique collection of small jars of sand from various beaches they’ve visited. Because the couple has enjoyed married life in so many different homes, a string of matching picture frames recalls each “lived at” address. “This SML house, our 13th, has to be our last stop,” Zoey quips. “Those frames are no longer available!” smlhomemagazine.com

There are large patios outside the lower level, shielded from weather by the decks above. A new outdoor bar sits a few feet outside Dan’s office window, cleverly designed to allow viewing of water sports action down on Gills Creek.

On the upper level, there are two guest bedrooms that share a Jack-and-Jill bath. Both rooms have lofts: one with a tall ladder, the other with a circular stairway. A balcony overlooks the main floor and ends in a nook, Zoey’s home office with large windows.

“I like this spot,” she says, “because I can look up the hill from this window to my mom’s house. In the morning, I see when she opens her blinds to the new day, and I know she’s up and OK.” smlhomemagazine.com

In addition to all the indoor changes to the home, the outside was updated with new paint and a more welcoming outwardtapering stairway to the front door. But the most dramatic difference resulted from inspired landscaping and hardscaping.

Removal of many trees — about 120, Dan says — opened up a breathtaking view of Smith Mountain’s entire ridgeline. Gary Haynes of Haynes Building & Excavation worked with Dan and Zoey to create two fire pits: one gas and one for logs, each with a patio seating area. The addition of new rock walls, landscaped flower beds and curved connecting paths unified the look of the property and tied it to Zoey’s mother’s home, farther up the hill.

From antique cabin to contemporary cottage When Zoey lost her father in 2020, Dan suggested they build a home for her mother, June, on their 3.5-acre property.

“My husband and I lived for 40 years in an 1820s log cabin in Ohio,” June recounts. “We were antique dealers, so it was furnished and decorated with our rustic treasures. But when I thought about starting a new chapter, I wanted a spacious open-plan living area with light pouring in through large windows and doors.” She designed her dream cottage based on a photo from Pinterest, calling on her 36 years as an art teacher to visualize both functionality and décor.

“I want one big room for living and dining,” June told builder Chris Smoot. “I love to cook and want to do it standing behind the dining bar and enjoying the view.” And what a view it is: the living area’s lake-facing wall is all windows and glass doors, a breathtaking view down Gills Creek with the entire ridge of Smith Mountain in the distance.

To one side of the kitchen/living area is June’s primary suite, with the same killer view through the continued window wall that runs nearly full-length across the lake side of the cottage. “We kept the bedroom as compact as possible so the living area could be very spacious,” June says. Still, the window wall nicely compensates, giving her sleeping space an airy, expansive feel.

On the opposite side of the living area is her art room, bathed in natural light from large windows and complete with the type of clever built-in work space you would expect a craft-loving former art teacher to need. A nearby guest bath allows the art room to serve as a guest bedroom if ever needed.

It’s quite a contrast to a 19th century antique-laden log home. Pointing to a collection of brightly-plumed birds that her late husband carved and painted, June says, “Those are among the few remnants from life in Ohio that made the move to SML with me.” ✦

Columbus Day weekend 2024 will mark the 33rd year for the Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour, a major fundraising event for participating area charities. So far, the event has raised more than $5 million and helped more than 50 nonprofits accomplish their missions. The all-volunteer CHT selects homes, obtains sponsors and recruits volunteers to staff the homes, docks and parking areas. Here are previews of the eight homes to be showcased this fall: The Nantucket-style LOCKPORT home has great views from its point lot in Waverly. The home encompasses almost 7,000 square feet, with six bedrooms. The main floor is centered around a two-story living room with a stone fireplace. The top floor has two guest suites, and the lower level includes a family room, bar, game room and additional bedrooms. The expanded screened porch overlooks a new stone patio with an inground spa, pergola and large outdoor kitchen.

The HELLER home, with traditional style and Craftsman flair, has an open concept main floor with views up the Roanoke’s main channel. Flooring is roughhewn white oak. The upper level has a second primary suite with dining, kitchenette and sitting areas. There are two patios, upper and the lower with a movie screen. A dining and side table were made from repurposed wood and leather chairs from old train cars. This crafty homeowner made curtains, pillows and bedspreads.

The COLE home, a modern farmhouse style, features custom kitchen cabinets with a stunning backsplash and a coffee bar. The large island has cubbies below the countertops.

Overlooking the lake, the living room has a stone fireplace with built-ins. A fireplace is also situated on the screened porch. Upstairs is a large bonus room with sleeping nooks, and the lower level has a custom bar and a pool table.

The GRAHAMS’ “Hickory Hill Cottage” is a 2,300-squarefoot, 1970s vintage A-frame, renovated in collaboration with a Roanoke design studio. It was transitioned from weekend retreat to a permanent retirement residence, keeping the original mid-century-modern style and footprint. The focus is the living/dining room with a whitewashed stone fireplace opposite a wall of glass overlooking their cove. The large dining table and cabinetry were made by the owners to fit the space.

Designed and built by the homeowner, the COULSON home has a unique rustic-modern industrial style, highlighted by a tall, rounded roof arch. The kitchen, with its brick backsplash matching the adjoining wall, is open to the living and dining areas. The homeowner made the dining table and end tables.

Floors and sliding barn doors are reclaimed wood. A stacked stone fireplace soars 30 feet high. A pleasant upper patio is decorated with a hanging canoe created by the homeowner.

The modern cottage-style JONES home was designed and built by the owners. It has 3,100 square feet on two levels.

The main level has whitewashed oak flooring, an open concept and a custom kitchen with quartz countertops and matching backsplash. The living room has a soapstone fireplace, large lake-facing windows and a shiplap ceiling with matching beams. The lower level includes two guest suites and a playroom. There is a grilling deck behind the barn-inspired two-car garage.

The 4,100-square-foot Craftsman-style GAYNOR home was built in 2017. The living room has a vaulted ceiling and a stacked stone fireplace with Craftsman panels above and custom cabinetry on either side. The main level and the upper level with a loft and two guest bedrooms have walnut-stained hardwood floors. A full-length lake-side porch includes durable Evergrain flooring. The lower level rec room has a stacked stone fireplace, pool table, pinball machine, unique décor and luxury vinyl tile flooring.

The FOGARTY home features a Northwest Modern Prairie style with deep eaves, low-pitched roof and huge windows.

The owner used internet plans and worked with a local builder to make the home a reality, which was a two-year process. There are 4,000 square feet on two levels. A large deck with unique railings enhance the entertaining space. The second floor offers a “fun room” done in a super hero theme plus two identical guest rooms with children’s décor.
