BAROMETER THE
WETHERBY SENIOR SCHOOL WEEKLY SEPTEMBER 3rd 2018 | WEEK 1
WELCOME BACK BOYS!
FROM THE HEADMASTER
Dear Parents, I hope you all received my letter earlier in the week which gave details of the changes that are happening and also the key dates for this term. As we come to the end of the first week, I am pleased to report that the new boys are settling in well and all the pupils have adapted well to the two week timetable and the new building. Please be reassured that staff will continue to supervise and monitor the boys closely in the coming weeks to ensure that they are transitioning safely and promptly. The new building has brought about several benefits: the new library is drawing boys in; lunch is an enjoyable and relaxed experience in the new more spacious dining hall and the lunchtime activities, which includes scheduled visits to the local park will begin next week. The Marylebone Lane building has been spruced up not only by the new Sixth
Form Centre but also the sixth formers themselves who look incredibly smart in their new suits. As in many schools, we are expecting the sixth formers to make use of the ‘space’ in their timetables not only to do extra work but also involve themselves more broadly in the life of the School. Several of them showed both their leadership and enthusiasm for helping the school community by coming in a day early to support the new boys. The vertical links throughout the School are important in helping to strengthen the Wetherby community; I still vividly remember my first Head of House, Sam, even though when I bumped into him shortly after I left school, he had no idea who I was! The strengthening of the Trib system and the ability of the Sixth Form to influence and guide the younger boys considerable and there will be opportunities for them to take on more responsibility throughout the school in the coming weeks.
The last few weeks have been some of the most exciting in the School’s short history and there is a great deal to look forward to in the coming term: most notably the fundraising event that the PTA are working hard to put on for November 2nd. I do hope that you will be able to come along and support the good causes, particularly the Walkabout Foundation and the West London Mission, which the boys selected last year. If anyone wishes to donate a lot to the auction that will be held on the evening, please email me or Karen Gillingwater (kgillingwater@ me.com). With best wishes,

BARCELONA FOOTBALL TOUR 2018 Day 1 After landing in Barcelona, we made our way to the hotel. The boys enjoyed a leisurely afternoon; pool activities, World Cup Quarter Finals (cue excitement from Sacha R and Frejvid G as they supported Les Blues) and table tennis. Following a mammoth meal in the evening, we ventured into Platja D’Aro and the boys were given free time to explore the local area. After completing some very important shopping and demolishing an ice cream or two - all while watching yet another World Cup Quarter Final – we strolled back towards the hotel. En route,
we managed to find ourselves in the middle of the Platja D’Aro carnival, allowing the
boys to experience some local musical tradition. A great end to the first day of the tour!
Day 2 The day began with our first football training session. In 30 degree heat, they trained in the Catalonian Mountains, developing their control under the expert guidance of the RCD Espanyol coaches. During the afternoon, we headed back to the hotel to watch the main event of the trip so far – England vs Sweden, World Cup Quarter Final (it was still coming home at this point). Along with a Wetherby rendition of ‘Jerusalem’ and ‘It’s Coming Home’, the boys settled to watch a magnificent victory by the mighty Three Lions against a substandard Swedish side (credit to Lukas S for proudly representing Sweden in the hotel
BARCELONA FOOTBALL TOUR 2018 restaurant).
during the second half.
That evening, we were ready for our first fixture of the Tour. Our Year 9 team played with pride and passion and showed themselves to be a credit to the school. Goals from Haotong X and Yuvraj C were well deserved but the boys fell slightly short, losing 3-2 in their opener. The Man of the Match Award went to Haotong X for his efforts in front of goal; an honourable mention to Alex PT who ensured that stability remained in defence
Our Year 10’s took to the field and allowed frustration to get the better of them. In a game that included four red cards and six yellow cards, Wetherby lowered themselves to the standard of the opposition and seemed to forget how to play football. The game resulted in a 4-1 loss and Wetherby were humbled in defeat. Tour captain, Evangelos M, called a team meeting to discuss their outlook and how to move forward.
Day 3 Sunday brought a day of relaxation for the boys. We all visited the nearby Water Park, where boys conquered the 70ft Aqua Rocket; a freefall slide that goes from top to bottom in 3 seconds – and again, as is tradition, Senor McFaul was the first from the Wetherby contingent to conquer this colossus. After spending all day at the Water Park, we headed into Platja D’Aro for an evening of bowling and arcade games! In a fierce contest, Lukas S reigned supreme on the bowling alley, while Mr Sullivan was crowned the winner of the staff game.
BARCELONA FOOTBALL TOUR 2018
Day 4
to be taught by him!
Monday arrived and the boys were trained by the RCD legend that is Diego Orejuela. He is a former captain of the club, dedicating 12 years to their cause and earning 245 appearances. It was an honour
After lunch, we visited the medieval city of Girona to explore the set of Game of Thrones. Used to film scenes in the fictional town of Braavos, the boys were given time to explore the twisting
alleyways and gigantic cathedrals and Max P was in his element! After a quick pit-stop for ice cream and a spot of droneflying, we headed off to Farners for our second game of the tour.
BARCELONA FOOTBALL TOUR 2018 The Year 9 team started slowly, conceding three quick goals, but they eventually found their feet. Frejvid G scored two goals in quick succession, making it 3-2 and Wetherby continued to press. Farners countered and extended their lead before Marcel B scored a 30 yard thunderbolt to set up a tense final ten minutes. Despite constant pressure, Wetherby
couldn’t find a way through and lost 4-3. Frejvid G was deservedly awarded Man of the Match for this performance. The Year 10 team took to the field to conquer the poor performance from their first game and played out a stalemate in the first half, with each side shutting down the other. Farners took the lead in the second half against the
run of play but Wetherby then began to take control of the game. All boys performed phenomenally in the final 25 minutes and put Farners to the sword, scoring three goals in quick succession through Elis M and Ethan E. The Man of the Match was awarded to Sacha R as he gave everything for the team, gaining two assists in the process.
Day 5 The boys returned to MontRas for their final training session of the tour under the guidance of the master: Diego Orejuela. Later, tired and in need of rest, the boys arrived back at the hotel for copious amounts of Spanish cuisine. We had a brief excursion into Platja D’Aro, where Sam T, Bruno and Emile debated whether to purchase the new Barcelona shirt as a memento, but they decided against it this time! That evening, we returned to PALS to make amends for our opening game of the tour.
BARCELONA FOOTBALL TOUR 2018 For the final game, the Year 9 team started strongly, passing the ball with purpose and creating some half chances for Hugo GG and Bruno VS. However, Wetherby were unable to deal with the counter attack from PALS and fell behind to a well-worked goal. With Wetherby continuing to push forward in search of the elusive goal, PALS continued to strike on the counter attack with accuracy. The Man of the Match for this game was awarded to Marcel B for an athletic and high-energy performance.
The Year 10 team took to the field to seek redemption for their opening game defeat. They started slowly, failing to string together phases of play. PALS were unable to capitalise on the Wetherby performance and half time arrived at a stalemate. After a tactical tweak, Wetherby began to dominate play in the second half. Nacho GG and Monty C were controlling the midfield and creating chances for Leo L and Nour H in the early stages. PALS were limited to long-range chances. One of which was deflected
into the path of the striker, who took advantage to place the ball into the empty net. Wetherby were not perturbed as they continued to attack. Nour H won and took a free kick; straight into the top corner, Wetherby were back in the game after this moment of magic. The remainder of the game was a physical battle, with both teams trying to search for a winning goal. Ultimately, the game finished as a draw. The Man of the Match Award went to Antonio dB for his heroics between the posts to deny the opposition.
BARCELONA FOOTBALL TOUR 2018 Day 6 Our final day began at daybreak. The boys had packed, tidied and cleaned their rooms before enjoying a final traditional Spanish breakfast. After arriving in Barcelona, our first stop was
for Camp Nou; the home of FC Barcelona. All boys were given a self-guided tour of the impressive stadium, taking in the history and vast trophy cabinet. They could experience a first-class
dressing room, appreciate the preparation that goes into game day logistics and witness the atmosphere of 100,000 spectators, watching every kick of the ball. A truly superb experience sowing professional sport in a different perspective.
From Camp Nou, we ventured to the world famous Sagrada Familia. Gaudi’s incomplete cathedral provided the perfect ending to the trip as the boys were mesmerised
by the outstanding architecture. The boys always finish the Tour with fond memories of both highs and lows and this year they have been
lucky enough to have all the events of the trip recorded by Olly G, in the official Tour video!
