FROM THE HEADMASTER
Dear Parents, The long round of welcoming and being welcomed is now at end, finishing this week with a fantastic evening in Hannah House for all parents of new boys to the school. The evening presented logistical challenges for the catering and facilities teams but they pulled together and I was very grateful for all they did to make the evening a success. For many staff, and all the parents, it was an opportunity to have a first look at the facilities that will be available in Hannah House from next academic year. There was a fantastic atmosphere in the main hall and it was heartening for me to meet another group of parents who are behind the school and looking for opportunities to offer support. Miss Twomey is currently organising the first meeting of the PTA for next week and I am looking forward to discussing ways in which they can continue to build that feeling of community amongst the parent body as we grow and also look at ways in which they can enhance the boys’ experience as they move up through the school.
This week’s issue focuses on the Forensics project which starts the academic year in science for Year 9. The practical application of skills and scientific knowledge to solve a double murder is a creative way of hooking the boys early on and preparing them for the GCSE work that they will be doing later in the year: microscopy, cells, chemical analysis, and others, are included in the project.
Kingston Grammar and Mill Hill respectively. Whilst the victories are to be celebrated it was pleasing to hear that the boys in both matches played as a team, supported each other when under pressure and were respectful to each other and the opposition. Both wins were hard fought and thoroughly well-deserved and will, I hope, have provided them a real confidence boost in the early stages of the term.
Finally, congratulations to the Year 10 footballers and the U16 rugby side who both recorded fantastic results against
Best wishes,

Macmillan are a charity that provide medical, practical, emotional and financial support to people living with cancer, as well as their families. Over the past two years, our annual cake sale has raised several hundreds of pounds for Macmillan, thanks to the generosity of the boys and their parents. This year, the cake sale will take place in the Lower School Common Room at 13:45. Please do encourage your boys to attend and to bring some small change to school so that they can purchase cakes. BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT: YEAR 9 FORENSICS
Mrs Skinner and Mrs Bennet write… This half term, the Year 9 boys are studying forensics in Biology. After a mysterious double murder took place in the Library, the boys took the role of Scene of Crime Officers: the first people to arrive at a crime scene, who carry out the vital role of gathering evidence and ensuring it is not contaminated. To make sure this didn’t happen, and to help them get into character, the boys wore full forensic suits and gloves. Once evidence has been collected it is sent off the laboratories to be analysed. This week, boys have been learning about classification of fingerprints, analysing them and using aluminium powder to lift the fingerprints from items found at the crime scene. In the next few weeks, the boys will be analysing the hair, fibres and blood splatter that they collected, in order to try and find out which one of the three suspects was present at the crime scene. Let’s hope they identify the killer before they strike again…
BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT: SCIENTIFIC ILLUSTRATION
Miss Bradley writes: Along with Mrs Bennet, I have been running an after school activity focused on understanding and creating scientific illustrations. In our first session, the boys watched Mrs Bennet expertly demonstrate the dissection of a pluck, consisting of a liver, heart, lungs and oesophagus, before examining and carrying out dissections themselves, on a kidney, heart, brain and eye. We documented the dissections with photographs, and the boys are now learning pen and ink techniques used in real scientific illustration to create accurate drawings of their organs.
