BAROMETER THE

WETHERBY SENIOR SCHOOL WEEKLY MAY 21st 2018 | WEEK 6 YEAR 10 DUKE OF EDINBURGH ADVENTURES!

FROM THE HEADMASTER

Dear Parents, Who we choose to surround ourselves with is important. A study of cardiac surgeons in the US showed that their success rate was not increased by time or working at different times of the day, but rather the team they were working with; there was a higher chance of the operation going well if they were working in a particular hospital with a particular team. This suggests that performance as part of a team is team specific. Similarly, over 75% of airline accidents happen the first time a crew is flying together. Creating the perfect team, and then keeping it together is not always possible and so the importance of learning to work together and adapting are important. Last weekend, the practice Duke of Edinburgh expeditions helped the boys to learn the skills they need to work together and be successful. After a difficult couple of weeks for the Year 10, the opportunity to get out of London and into the countryside of the Chilterns was a fortuitously timed one and the photos within show the extent to which the boys enjoyed the challenges of navigating and

working together. I am very grateful to Mr Dawson, Mrs Skinner, Miss Ridley and Miss Maroudi for using their weekend to support the boys but also all the work that goes into preparing them. The boys in the Sixth Form next year will have the opportunity to undertake the more challenging expedition as well as developing new skills and contributing further through volunteering. This week included two displays of individual excellence in the drama studio. On Wednesday boys from Years 7-10 took part in the inter-Trib drama. Fifteen boys made it through to the final and the quality of the performances was outstanding. With minimal use of props, their monologues created whole worlds: from the enthusiastic youngster trying to grab his parents’ attention, to the pupil trying to lead his class in revolt against the school, to the man whose frustration over a broken boiler hid a deeper personal tragedy. The range on offer and the performances of the boys were outstanding and I thank Miss Twomey for her work in pulling it all together.

In the other half of the drama studio, the Year 11 Art and Graphic Design work was on display on Thursday evening. The range of responses to the exam questions and the variety of media used was impressive and it was good to see so many of the younger pupils there to see the different pieces and see what it is they have to aspire to in the coming years. Who we choose to surround ourselves with is important and, at the end of a challenging half term, I feel very fortunate to be surrounded by such varied, talented and interesting young men and such supportive and compassionate staff. I hope that you all enjoy the long weekend and the half term break. Best wishes,

DUKE OF EDINBURGH BRONZE EXPEDITION Last weekend 42 of the Year 10 boys headed out to the Chiltern Hills for the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Practice Expedition. All the boys arrived promptly for their 0830 hrs rendezvous at Marylebone train station and the teachers were not only impressed with their punctuality but also with their packing and equipment. Boys had clearly listened to the equipment lecture and gone over the kit list to ensure

they had all they needed. The boys had two gorgeous days of weather for the expedition and walked between 30 – 35 km over the two days carrying all their own equipment. This was no mean feat considering the heat and the amount of equipment the boys were carrying! Despite most boys having never pitched a tent before, the groups worked well together to get them up all in record time so they could settle down and begin their evening meals. We had everything from boil in the bag meals to hot dogs, and it was nice to see the boys

all cooking proper food in the evening – something that is essential given how many calories you burn on a full day of hiking. We currently have over 50 Year 9 boys signed up for Bronze Duke of Edinburgh next year and our current Year 11s are now signing up for the Silver Award ready to start in the Sixth Form. This is a very popular activity and I would strongy

encourage everyone to at least attempt one of the levels whilst they are Wetherby, as they really do offer a special experience. If you are interested in joining and would like more information then go the Duke of Edinburgh website (https://www.dofe.org/) or see Mr Dawson.

LIVE LOUNGE The Live Lounge concert was a huge success last week. With performances from two rock bands, Funk Band, Guitar ensemble and a range of rock solos. This concert is now a regular occurrence, so look out for more dates next year. Well done to all the boys involved it was certainly a memorable evening. With a lights and sound giving the concert a real professional feel. Thank you to all the tutors who prepared the boys Mr McKean, Mr Ezzard ,Mr Quintarelli and to Mr Vaitkevicius for his hard work with the set up and audio.

THE CELLO ENSEMBLE VISIT THE BBC On 21st May 2018 the cello ensemble accompanied by Mr Jenkinson, the cello tutor, went to BBC Broadcasting House. Mr Martin arranged for us to see a live recording of The One Show! We went to see the winner of Young Musician of the Year, Sheku Kenneh-Mason. He is an amazing cello player who played at the Royal Wedding last weekend. It was a massive privilege to see him play and meet him afterwards. We also met the presenters of the show. We all had a great time and it has really inspired us to keep working hard at our music! - written by Max K, Year 7

ISA TENNIS NATIONALS Mr Underwood writes‌ On Monday, four students travelled to Hertfordshire to participate in the ISA Tennis Nationals. Injuries, fatigue and heat all played a part during the morning session but our boys all played some superb games. Sacha R and Antonio DB both reached the Cup competition while Evangelos M and Sebastian P qualified for the Plate event. Antonio DB played well during the knockout stage, showcasing his unique style and natural ability. However, met his match against a strong opponent, finishing in round 16. Sebastian P progressed through to the Quarter Final, playing some sublime shots but it ultimately proved to be the limit on a tiring day.

Sacha R went from strength to strength during the knockout rounds, disposing of stronger competitors with ease. His particular highlight was conquering a pre-tournament favourite as he reached the semi final, displaying a ruthless streak and constantly testing his opponent. During the semi final, Sacha lost to the ultimate winner of the event. Evangelos M reached the final of the Plate competition.

Despite an injured wrist, he played superbly and powered through the earlier rounds. He reached top form in the last game, charging to a 3-0 lead and winning the event. All four boys were exceptional throughout the day and thoroughly deserved their success in the competition. To bring home a trophy in their first competition is a very good start for Wetherby in this national event.
