From the Headmaster 6 July 2017 Dear Parents, The last three years have been the most fulfilling and satisfying of my career to date. To establish Wetherby Senior has been such a pleasure and I so look forward to its future development. Thank you for your incredible support and friendship and for spreading the good name of this School – we couldn’t have done it without you. After two years, we have a record number of registrations, a roll of over 220 brilliant boys in September, another building to develop, impressive GCSE predictions for 2018 and the most talented and capable teaching staff we could ever wish for. Everything we wanted to do in three years we have done, and so much more… One of the many positive things about a new school is that there is no tradition, no feeling of “We’ve always done it that wa y so we will continue to do it that way”. Everything is flexible and can be refined, changed or taken away. In the spirit of that therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to inform you of some changes to the School that will take effect from September. In making these changes we have given much consideration to parental, boy and staff feedback, as well as putting in place what we believe is the most effective way of running the School within our existing infrastructure. Essentially, we are shortening the School day, making more effective use of the time in the school building and freeing up time for Drama and Music rehearsals. Games From September, all Games lessons will take place in the afternoon. This frees up more curriculum time for the boys as only one half of the journey to the sports grounds will be in the body of the school day. The afternoons will be: Year 7 – Monday and Wednesday Year 8 – Tuesday and Thursday Year 9 – Tuesday and Thursday Year 10 – Monday and Wednesday Year 11 – Monday and Wednesday As is the case at present, boys are welcome to travel home independently from the Sports Ground or take the bus back to school for a 4:30pm departure. Activities From September, there will be fewer compulsory activities for the boys. This enables there to be more time available for Drama and Music rehearsals. Boys will attend the activities sessions in a termly rotation throughout the year. Year 7 – Tuesday from 4:35 to 5:20pm Year 8 – Monday from 4:35 to 5:20pm Year 9 – Monday from 4:35 to 5:20pm Year 10 - Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award or Community Service on Tuesday from 3.30 to 5.20pm Year 11 – No compulsory activity sessions – boys can leave school at 3:30pm on a Tuesday and Thursday Supervised Prep Supervised prep will continue for boys in Years 7-10 but there will only be one session for Year 10 and it will cease altogether in Year 11. Year 7 - Tuesday and Thursday from 3:35 to 4:35pm Year 8 – Monday and Wednesday from 3:35 to 4:35pm Year 9 – Monday and Wednesday from 3:35 to 4:35pm Year 10 – Thursday from 3:35 to 4:35pm Year 11 - No compulsory Supervised Prep – boys can leave school at 3:30pm on a Tuesday and Thursday

This will be a privilege that can be immediately revoked and will only be allowed with parental permission.

NO ACTIVITIES

14:20

Wednesday 6th Thursday 7th Friday 8th HM Assembly at Hinde St Methodist Church

15:00 I hope you agree that the above refinements to our existing practice improve our provision and make for a make for an even more effective school experience for all boys, as well as giving them more independence and responsibility for their own learning. As previously outlined, parents and boys will be able to communicate with their Head of Year (Miss Ridley for 10 and 11 and Miss Eaves for Years 7, 8 and 9) as well as their tutor in the normal way. Please do contact them: nicki.ridley@wetherbysenior.co.uk or kate.eaves@wetherbysenior.co.uk or Mr Lawrence david.lawrence@wetherbysenior.co.uk if you have any questions prior to September or once term has started.

As I have said before, though I revert to full time at the Prep School, I will always take a close interest in Wetherby Senior and look forward to working with Seth Bolderow as the School moves forward next year. Exciting times all round – look forward to seeing you next year. Kind regards

Nick Baker Headmaster

Duke of Edinburgh

Mr Warner writes‌ Over the weekend 34 Year 10 boys headed out to Wendover to take part in their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh qualifying expedition. Over two days the boys walked through the idyllic Buckinghamshire countryside along routes that they had planned themselves and with only their maps and compasses to help them get by. Mrs Skinner, Miss Kirk, Miss Ridley and I were really impressed by the boys, who had clearly taken on the lessons from the practice expedition in May. The groups all displayed great teamwork and sound navigational skills and they have also become quite accomplished camp cooks. We all returned to London on Sunday evening, tired, weather-beaten, slightly grubby but with that wonderful sense of fulfilment that can only be felt after a weekend of total immersion in the English countryside.

Curriculum News From the Art and Graphic Design Department Mr Meyer writes‌ Years 7-9 have looked at Bridget Reilley during the final week of the year. She is known the world over for her Op Art. The boys were set the task of creating a collaborative piece. For this, they were firstly given the opportunity to cut into lino to create a series of lines – thereafter they produced a collaborative print. The results, of which, you can see below.

On the Hot Seat proceeds go the Baker Retirement Fund. We’ve got our copies, #buyyoursnow. Mr Baker loves trainers. He has dozens and dozens of pairs – New Balance are his #no1s, (readers, in case you were wondering the N and the B stand for Nick Baker. Of course) but he also likes the bright colours of Salomon and Nikes. Come to think of it, I recall seeing him a very jazzy green pair of Nikes the other day.

Wether-bye Mr Baker Hello and welcome to Week 26 of “On the Hot Seat”. Readers, it is with regret that this week’s column sees yet another, “Wetherbye”. Our very own Nick Baker, “Nicky B” is abandoning us, leaving us for the hills, (well, the Prep School) and it is with a tear in our eye that we put our pen to paper to bid farewell to the best Head ever. Readers, before he became a Headmaster, Mr Baker was one of us… a lowly classroom teacher. Geography was his trade and, despite never winning a subject prize for it whilst at school, he is apparently quite good it. It was at university that he decided to combine this passion with his love for Tintin and write a dazzling, (although not very high scoring) dissertation on ‘What Tintin teaches us about History and Geography in the twentieth century’. Readers, signed copies are available at reception for a bargain price of £12.99. All 12

Mr Baker is also a huge Watford FC and Lego fan. So great is his love for these two things that, a few years ago, Wetherby parents commissioned a Lego Watford football club stadium for him. There have been a few near misses but rest assured, it is still standing. Readers, did you know that Mr Baker has over 50 ties languishing in his wardrobe?

On the Hot Seat So, on that bombshell let us begin…

11) What would your personalised hashtag be?

1) Football or rugby?

#youhaventseenthelastofnickbaker

Football

12) What three items would you want if stranded on a desert island?

2) Captain Haddock or Thomson and Thomson? Good question… (a lengthy pause, readers, we thought we had him…) Captain Haddock 3) Ray-Bans or Oakleys? Oh Ray-Bans. Customised ones of course. 4) Lager tops or bitter shandy?

Adam Buxton podcasts, Arctic Monkeys CDs and a really difficult Lego model. Maybe the Taj Mahal or the Death Star or even simply enough bricks so I could build a Lego Wetherby Prep or Lego Wetherby Senior – complete with lots of minifigure variations so I could mock up all the staff!

Lager tops 5) Barometer or Wetherbuzz? Oh too difficult. So mean, so mean… (readers this was repeated at least five times). So mean. I would say The Barometer has used The Wetherbuzz as a template and raised the bar for school magazines. 6) Summer or winter? Summer 7) Wetherby Prep or Wetherby Senior? Oh really, WHAAAT? I love all Wetherby Schools. #wetherthediplomat #puns 8) Dogs or cats? Dogs 9) Nike or New Balance? Oh!! New Balance. 10) Dancing or singing? Hahaha. I’m hopeless at both but probably singing.
