Week 30 Barometer

Page 1

From the Headmaster Dear Parents, With news of a successful Ofsted inspection confirmed this week, Senior School staff might take comfort that this particular form of inspection will not take place for another six years. Even though external assessments and judgements are a fact of educators' lives, a clear sense of professional pride, shared by all, means that refinements and new initiatives across all areas of our schools never stop. The Prep School was inspected four years ago and even though the judgements from that week were incredibly effusive (the only complaint being not enough wash basins for the boys…) I know that the School is even better now than it was back then. It will be interesting to see how both Schools can improve, yet further, on such positive feedback when they are inspected again in the future. A sense of anticipation in both Schools at the moment, with the residentials all home for this half of term and exams coming up after Half Term. Whilst the boys might not be feeling terribly upbeat about the exams (although I do know that many of our boys actually look forward to internal exams) there is plenty to look forward to in what is always a fun half of term for boys and parents. Sports Days, parent socials, residentials and, of course, prize giving ceremonies at both Schools. Parents will know that we always try to make a Wetherby Prize Giving as entertaining, different and creative as we possibly can and this year will be no different. No guest speakers, as usual, just the staff, boys and you, the parents, coming together to celebrate the 'Wetherby Way'. Another highlight of the term occurs in an hour or so. Just as I finish writing this, I’m off to referee the Staff vs Parents football match at Wetherby Sports Ground. When I told my family that I was taking part this evening, they responded with, “Jolly good; you could do with running around a bit." Charming… A special night last night at the annual Prep School Heads’ Dinner at Harrow. Uniquely, Harrow School invites past pupils to chat to their old Headmasters before dinner and it is always great to catch up with the boys and see what fine young men they have become. Talking to adolescents can sometimes not be easy but it’s a reflection on Harrow and on Wetherby, that the boys that I chat with are always interesting, interested, engaging, polite and very amusing. Without exception, they talk fondly of their time at Wetherby and are always keen to hear about their favourite teachers and talk anecdotally and affectionately about their time at the School. Maybe it was flattery but, at dinner, a Housemaster said to me, “I saw one of your boys last week. He was brilliant – but then Wetherby boys always are.” Great to hear… Have a good weekend.

Year 7 Lion King Workshop: Year 7 will be attending a workshop and afternoon matinee performance of The Lion King on Wednesday (25th May) to consolidate what they have learnt about Music Theatre this term. Boys should come to school in Wetherby Games kit (black tracksuit trousers, white polo shirt, hoodie and trainers) as the workshop will involve some dancing. Alan is providing the boys with packed lunches, but they should bring their school bags to carry it in throughout the day. Please also ensure that your son brings a valid oyster card as we will be travelling to Pineapple Dance Studios and back to school from the Lyceum Theatre by tube. Please direct any questions to amanda.valentine@wetherbysenior.co.uk.

CLASSROOM NEWS From the Geography Department Mrs Deedat writes... Boys in Year 7 finished their unit on rivers by bringing all their learning together in the form of a 3D river from source to mouth. Manu and Frejvid worked really hard on a parody of 'Stitches' to go with their river which clinched them first place. Below are the results which aren't at all bad for 15/20 minutes!

The

enjoyed prodding the different parts, feeling how spongy the lungs are compared to the tough cartilaginous trachea. We also managed to partially inflate the lungs which was good fun!

LEARNING@WETHERBY Mr Lawrence writes... For my staff challenge I have been learning weight-lifting. The attached photo shows me dead-lifting the fourth rep of 135KG on what is called a trap bar. The trap bar allows the lifter to stand within the circumference of the bar and means that it’s possible to achieve a really good posture for a clean lift. I’ve also been learning dead lifts with the Olympic bar as well as bench press, military press and clean and press. Weight-lifting is very technical (it is if you want to do it safely) and the power training involves lots of muscle and joint activation. It’s especially important

for

me

because I’m missing one of my quads (the vastus medialis oblique) as a result of a (very) historic rugby injury and the legs do a lot of the work – especially in the deadlift. My number one tip for anybody starting out – especially boys in their teens – is follow Mr Sullivan’s strength and conditioning workout to build up a robust frame using

body-weight

exercises.

I had the

advantage

of

twenty

years training in Kung Fu, wrestling, BJJ and Judo before learning to lift weights but I still got expert help to learn how to

train

properly

and

safely.
