Week 36 barometer

From the Headmaster Dear Parents, Thank you for all your support this year. I hope you agree that it has been the most monumental of years and we are so proud of all that has been achieved. The boys were on great form in the final assembly and for the Rock Band to sing the term out with Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple was somehow very fitting… It has been a great year and next year will be even better. A final thank you to Henry Warner who has done such a magnificent job this year with the Barometer – this issue says everything about how far we’ve come in a year! Have a great summer!

Joshua George-Oppong receives the Thames Cup on behalf of Fleet, this year’s overall winning trib. 2 The Barometer - 07/07/2016

CURRICULUM NEWS From the Science Department Miss Lillington writes... After the success of last week, the Science department have had their own cross-curricular Sports Science Week to precede our first Wetherby Senior Sports Day. In Biology, the boys designed their own experiments to investigate the effect of exercise on the heart rate. The boys chose their own exercises and methods of measuring heart rate,; including the use of heart rate sensors and stethoscopes. In Physics and Chemistry, the boys have been learning about the physics of flight in sport. They have looked at the flight paths of balls in football and rugby, and have used slow motion footage to see how balls are deformed in tennis and golf.

CURRICULUM NEWS From the Geography Department Mrs Deedat writes... Geography GCSE Summer Prep To prepare them for the rigours of the new Geography GCSE course I have put together some summer homework for the boys to get on with in their free time which has been emailed to parents by reception. The new GCSE textbook is now available online through the Kerboodle website and BBC Bitesize is also useful for map skills. All the instructions are included in the emailed document and the boys should return to school in September ready for a test on OS Maps (60% pass mark) and with a summary of a Geofile article they have read. Please do let me know if you have any questions and I hope you have a wonderful summer.

From the Latin Department GCSE Latin For boys who are continuing with Latin in Year 10, and who want (or need!) to revisit any Latin grammar points over the holidays, the following textbook is recommended (available via Amazon). Answers are unfortunately not included with the textbook, but can be downloaded via the following link: https://1drv.ms/f/s! AoB1Sap6OQkQd2-PNSP5ADyCU5M Alternatively, online quizzes to practice individual grammar elements can be found via https://www.quia.com/shared/latin/. Just choose a grammar element from the “Subcategory drop-down menu. Valete!

In class this week 9A and 9B created ancient curse tablets this week. When ancient Romans were robbed, they created curses to ensure the gods punished the miscreants. The boys enjoyed imagining suitably unpleasant punishments! See right.

SPORTS DAY: YEAR 7 Mr Sullivan writes... It was the second last day of term and Sports Day was upon us. The sun was shining in true British fashion and the boys were eager to get underway. On the track we saw some fiercely competitive running and many tight finishes. All the boys who ran gave 100% during every race which made for a terrific set of results. The field events were also a huge success with some enormous throws and mammoth standing jumps. After these each Trib took part in the much anticipated Tug of War event. Overall it was a fantastic day and a hugely successful premier to Wetherby Senior's annual sports day. The scores came in and all the scores were tight but there could only be one winner. There was one point between 1st and 3rd but it came down to the sportsmanship points from throughout the day (see page 22).

CLUB NEWS Grub Club Miss Lillington writes... In our last Grub Club, the boys celebrated Eid (although one day early) by enjoying a feast of pitta bread, falafel, hummus, stuffed vine leaves and dates. The highlight of the session was probably the blind hummus tasting challenge where boys had to guess the ingredients in each of the different types of hummus! Our stars this week were Adam and Sherif, who gave the boys a fantastic talk about the meaning of Ramadan and Eid. Thank you boys, and Eid Mubarak!
