Welcome Dear Members: The latter part of April has shown some warmer temperatures, giving us the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and activities that Wexford has to offer. This past month continued with a positive trend of member participation in the amenities and events that we created for you, and I appreciate your support and excitement. In particular we have seen a 21% increase in our Food & Beverage Revenues compared to 2019 at the same time and record numbers of golf course rounds. In the month of May we continue to provide a well-rounded experience in events that you sure do not want to miss such as Mother’s Day Crafts and Brunch, Taste of Mexico and Burger Night at the Clubhouse, Ladies Member-Member in Golf and the Club Championship in Tennis… just to name a few! I would be remiss if I did not call your attention to the current labor challenges that the Hospitality Industry is facing, particularly Hilton Head Island and local Private Clubs. We are facing that here in Wexford too. The labor challenge, typically referred to as the “talent crisis” or “war for talent” has been a focus for the leadership team and I over the past month. The structural displacement of hospitality workers during the COVID-19 pandemic has translated into a negative perception of job security, apprehension around health and safety, and those hospitality workers finding permanent opportunities at organizations that experienced surging demand during the pandemic, in contrast to the hospitality industry. I am confident that we will advance our hiring efforts and leverage our benefits program, allowing us to recruit well-qualified employees to

serve the membership at large. In the meantime, I appreciate your patience in areas of the club that are seeing a surge in demand while we navigate our current employee base to best serve you and your families. We continue to work diligently on our Capital Infrastructure for 2021 with the most recent addition of artificial turf at the playground. In May we will continue our efforts with bidding out the enhancement of the golf course restrooms, Harbour Center windows and door replacement, and lighting selection for all tennis courts. We also anticipate quotes from contractors soon on the repairs needed for the Harbour bulkheads, and we will send the proper communication to those homeowners on the repairs and the suggested contractor that can assist you. Thank you again for your continued support of the events and programming that we have created for you in the first quarter, and stay tuned for future events that you can participate in. As always, my door is open to you, and if you have any feedback, it is greatly appreciated and welcomed.
Regards,
Ryan
ABOUT THE COVER PHOTO This moment of the sunrise shining above the harbour was captured by COO Ryan Spence on April 23, just as he arrived to the Clubhouse to begin another wonderful day working at Wexford.
Letter from the Board President Hello Neighbors, Nice to Have Heritage Week back – It wasn’t a full blown Heritage Week, but it was a step in the right direction. Some Wexford members participated in the golf pro-am at the Heritage Classic, some were involved in volunteering at the tournament, some rented houses nearby for parties, etc. Sure was nice for those that were in town to be able to enjoy some of these activities David Jackson President again as we look forward to even more activity that week next year. Wexford Property Sales are still Buzzing – Last year was a record with over $1M in New Property Owner Initiation Funds (NPOIF) collected. This year as of this writing we have $373k in NPOIF collected to date with another $160k of NPOIF in planned closings for the next 6 weeks or so. And our management and staff have us under budget for operations so far this year, even with costs creeping up. All good news on the financial front. Lots of Events for us to Enjoy – This month we have our Mother’s Day brunch, the next Passport Series dining experience, Docktails is back this year, boating excursions, tennis, pickleball and golf events and MORE! If you’re not having fun at Wexford, well... You’re not trying!

Proper usage of Wexford Channel & Lock
he following guidelines are intended to make the transit of the Wexford lock as convenient and consistent as possible for members entering and exiting Wexford Harbour.
T
not have VHF, please make sure the security guard has your number. If you do not have a VHF radio, the lock operator will fit you in where he is able; boats with proper communication will take priority.
• Contact Wexford lock when it is in your sights, either from Broad Creek when coming in, or from the harbour while going out.
• Please take into consideration that Security has many responsibilities and will tend the lock as soon as possible. By staying outside the channel, you have more room to maneuver and ensure that your vessel is safe.
• All in-bound traffic must establish contact with the Harbour Center (or Security, if after hours) before entering the channel. This should be done via VHF channel 14 or via cell phone, to Security at 843-6868818. Security will contact you via VHF once they are at the lock. • When the operator is at the lock, they will either direct you to enter the approach channel via VHF or give you instructions if there is a vessel ahead of you. If you do
• Once in the channel try to stay as close to the center as possible, where the depth is optimal. • The marked channel, from the flashing red light to the lock, is a “no wake zone.” Proceed at a speed that will not create a damaging wake. This “no wake zone” extends for the entire channel behind Wexford.

Upcoming Circumnavigation of Hilton Head Island The annual Wexford Hilton Head Island Circumnavigation and raft-up is Sunday, May 16. Join us on your boat to follow the flotilla around Hilton Head, up the Port Royal Sound and then to an anchorage/raft-up north of Pinkney Island in MacKay’s Creek. The boats will raft together, so bring food to share and your favorite drink for the 2- to 3-hour raft-up before returning to Wexford Harbour. Don’t have a boat? Let us know you’d like to participate and ride with a member. There is a Captains Meeting on Saturday, May 15, at 4:00 PM in the Harbour Center to finalize details, announce departure/return times and provide general information. This event is weather-permitting and subject to change.
continued from previous page • As you approach the lock gates, a flashing yellow light warns you to approach the lock with caution, and that the gates are fully open. If this light is not flashing, do not approach, and contact the lock operator for verbal instructions. • If you see a constant red light, then the lock gates are either closed or still moving. The red light only turns off after the gates are fully open. • If you do not see either of the lights, wait outside the lock and contact the lock operator. Do not proceed to the lock, as there could be a malfunction. Once contact with the operator is established, you will be guided via VHF radio on Channel 14 for the next set of actions. Once again, it is imperative that your vessel have a VHF radio onboard and if no radio, then the operator must have your cell number to contact you.
FLOATING DOCKS Please use the floating docks by the lock entrance for quick stops or emergencies only and not for tying up overnight. You can drop off and pick up from there, but for longer than 30-minute stays, please pull into the harbour and use the guest dock. As you enter the lock, outbound, the lock operator will ask the following questions:
Who is in command? What is the name of your boat? How many people are aboard? Where are you heading? Do you have a time of return?
• Once the water level has been equalized, the lock operator will retrieve the lines, if used, and direct you to continue through the lock.
One last thought — If you are having work done on your boat and a service tech will need to take the boat out of the lock, inform the Harbour Center.
• When departing the lock, if the yellow flashing light is not visible, obtain confirmation from the operator before proceeding. Do not attempt to leave the lock before the doors are fully opened as indicated by the yellow light.
All the aforementioned procedures are in place to ensure that our members can use the lock with confidence in the knowledge that they will not have to deal with any unpleasant surprises.
• Do not turn your VHF off 14 until you have cleared the Wexford Channel. Also, always monitor 14 while in the harbour. • In the lock, take direction from the operator. If they instruct you to take a line, this is to minimize the buffeting from water entering the lock and ensure a safe passage with no damage.
11 • The Club Times
• When a Security Officer operates the lock, they won’t put more than one boat in the lock chamber.
These questions develop a simple “Sail Plan.” Wexford protocol is, if you are 2 hours overdue from an expected time of return, we will try to contact you. If we cannot contact you, then the Harbour Master will contact the Coast Guard and report an overdue vessel. The Coast Guard will ask the above questions and for a description of the boat and try to contact you via VHF with a notice on channel 16 that there is an overdue boat. Everyone will then keep an eye out for you, and while this may seem a bit extreme, you could have engine trouble, or you may have run aground.

DIRECTOR’S UPDATE:
Course Usage
A
fter a hectic April we move into May, which is expected to be another busy month in the golf world. There are a number of events on the Wexford calendar for all to enjoy. The rounds continue to trend upward, especially in the member category. We love to see more members playing! Unfortunately, increased rounds mean more divots and ball marks. Friendly reminder: repair pitch marks and replace your divots so the course can heal faster. Additionally, more play means more member interactions and member demand for tee times. Please try to be courteous on the course and play with a good pace of play. And if you are not going to use your tee time, please release it back to the membership. May will be busy, so let’s do our best to be considerate of all golfers.

TIPS FROM THE GOLF PRO:
The goal of this drill is to have a makeable second putt that isn’t too short or too long. This game can be played by yourself or with a friend! To start, place an alignment rod (or golf club) one putter length behind the hole for a putt from 10 feet or more.
If you make the putt it is 2 points; if you stop the ball in between the hole and the alignment rod it is 1. If the putt goes past the alignment rod it is -2, and if you leave the putt short it is -1. Continue to putt until you reach 10 points.

TENNIS/ PICKLEBALL TRIVIA: Q: Are Tennis and Pickleball growing sports, and are they safe to play during the COVID pandemic? A: YES!! They are both growing, and are the perfect socialdistancing sports — and the numbers continue to prove it. Tennis participation in the U.S. increased by 22% in 2020, with 21.64 million people hitting the courts, according to recent data from the Physical Activity Council’s Participation (PAC) report produced by Sports Marketing Surveys. Pickleball grew in 2020 to 4.2 million players in the US, an incredible growth rate of 21.3% from 2019 per the Sports & Fitness Industry Association’s (SFIA) 2020 Pickleball Participant Report, released in Feb. 2021.
TENNIS TIP:
Become a complete tennis player
Most tennis players are very comfortable with playing one style of tennis, and that’s how they tend to play all their matches. In order to grow as a tennis player, you MUST put yourself in uncomfortable situations. During your practice matches, set yourself “game goals.” Each game set of goal of moving, hitting and playing different styles. If you like to stay back, try moving in and hitting vollies. If you’re a power player, use one game to hit slice, lobs and finesse shots. Expand your play style to become a complete player!

Are you aware that Wexford regulations state that no parking is allowed on a roadway? This is for the safety and access of emergency vehicles, as Wexford roadways do not meet the required width to allow for parking on a roadway. The loading or unloading on a roadway requires pre-approval from Security, who will make the proper notifications. Yes, your commercial service must park in your driveway, not on the roadway, as they would be in violation of this regulation. What should you do if you plan to have a social gathering? Many members work together to share access to their driveways, and others have shuttled guests to and from
Online Resources Security Forms and Policies are all posted online within the member Portal. the clubhouse parking lot. Advance notice to Security for help with plans is always recommended. Do I need to register my golf cart? Yes, all golf carts must be registered with Wexford Security. Golf Carts being used on a Public Roadway outside of Wexford require a State Registration. Please contact South Carolina DMV to obtain one. Remember, you may only operate your golf cart on a public roadway, which is designated for 35mph or less, and you cannot drive on the leisure paths adjacent William Hilton Parkway as the Town of Hilton Head has a fine of $1,087.50 for violations of the ordinance. Do my Golf carts have to be equipped with lights? If the Golf Cart is used on a Wexford roadway after dusk, then the cart must be equipped with a front and rear light. Can my children drive my golf cart? The driver of a cart must be sixteen (16) and have a valid state vehicle drivers’ license in their possession. If stopped by Security, a qualified operator will need to come and get the cart, as they cannot authorize further use by someone in violation of the regulation, and the owner may also be fined. Is there a Bicycle decal? Yes, bicycles require a pass or a Wexford bicycle decal for entry to Wexford in the same manner as a vehicle. You can obtain a Wexford bicycle decal
at the front gate, Monday-Friday from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm. If use is within Wexford only, then no decal is required. Who has the right of way? A pedestrian has the right of way, and bicyclists must yield to a walker while on the leisure path. Does Wexford allow mopeds? Yes, but any person operating a moped or Light Motor Vehicle on a Wexford roadway must have a state license plate affixed, and have in their possession a valid moped operator’s license, or valid driver’s license and a valid state registration. Why did security write me a ticket? Security Officers are required to document by issuance of a ticket or a security report when a violation or complaint is observed or identified, for violation of a covenant, policy, or the Safety & Security rules and regulations of Wexford. Security is required by law to report certain offenses to the Sheriff’s Office as reportable crimes. Can I call security to remove wildlife from my property? No, officers are not trained and wildlife issues are managed through the Department of Natural Resources, or a registered DNR wildlife contractor. Wexford Security Officers are not authorized to handle or relocate any wildlife within Wexford. The Alligator Depredation permit and tag(s) authorizing the removal of a nuisance alligator from Wexford is managed by the Director of Safety & Security under the direction of the SCDNR – Nuisance Alligator Control Program, and the destruction or removal of any alligator without a tag is strictly prohibited.
Wexford member sightings at the RBC Heritage
T
he voices of Wexford members John Cunningham and Jim Hicks have been heard at the RBC Heritage Tournament for a number of years as they announced golfers arriving on the 9th green at Harbour Town. Unfortunately this year, due to Covid restrictions, the PGA decided not to have announcers, but John and Jim were given the opportunity to welcome the spectators as they arrived at the Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. Wearing their traditional Red Blazers and Tartan Knickers they certainly added to the original Scottish heritage of the event and became the focal point of numerous photographs taken by golfing fans from wide and far. John & Jim also strolled around the course as Tournament Ambassadors and continued to create much interest in their traditional dress. Most of the time they were photographed with children and adults, but following a meeting with Wexford members Ron & Mary Anne Soldo — who were based by the first green — they posed with the Soldos’ English Retriever “Lily Rose” who is obviously a keen supporter of golf. Wexford now has quite a presence at the Tournament. Brian Marlowe has been a walking scorer for several years while Fred Noonan and Neil Boderman have also recently become walking scorers.
Several other members have been marshals, including David Lomasney, who this year was on the 1st hole. Additionally, Ron Soldo, Paul McEvoy, Jon Shaver, Bob Cherichella, Mark Reed, Stephen Carter and Kurt Grindstaff all competed alongside top golf professionals in the prestigious Wednesday Pro-am Tournament.

Thank You for Spreading the Sun & Goodness! Dear Wexford Members, RJ and I recently headed up the 10th annual PFS Sporting Clays Shoot at Forest City Gun Club in Savannah, Ga. We were most fortunate to hold last year’s event just before the world closed down and changed significantly. It was hard to know what to expect this year but we were pleasantly surprised when participants began signing up and thrilled when we soon reached capacity and for the first time, sold out! The event was safely organized and marked a memorable day of camaraderie, abundant sunshine, and smiles. The proceeds help provide weekly programming and grow “Pockets Full of Sunshine”, a non- profit organization enhancing the lives of special needs adults through the involvement and engagement in community activities. One of the highlights of the shoot is to have the “Rays” (a moniker PFS give to its participants) present and help be a part of the event. This year our daughter, Sally, took to the exhibition stand and hit a clay on her very first try, resulting in complete surprise and joy to not only her but everyone in the crowd.

Together, with the generous contributions of so many Wexford Members, these sponsors help the Foundation to become a valuable force for good on Hilton Head Island and in the surrounding area.”
Check out the Foundation’s annual report to the community for more information about their good work, great sponsors, and deserving charities!
Wexford ETC Update By Marisa Hay Wexford Event and Travel Club (ETC) is gearing up for a post-pandemic comeback and we are making plans for future social opportunities outside of Wexford. For those new to our community, we invite you to explore our group and welcome your membership. We are Wexford residents whose goal is to get to know one another through the shared experience of travel and social events— local, regional and national/international. Established in the fall of 2007, ETC is run by a Board and Committee Chairs. Dues for this year are only $30 due to limited number of activities. Some past local activities include progressive dinners, golf cart scavenger hunts, bowling, Hilton Head Symphony, Arts Center productions and baseball games. Past regional outings have ventured to Biltmore House in Asheville, museums and Broadway shows in Atlanta and Jaguars football games in Jacksonville.
