Welcome Dear Members, As we head into the last month of summer, I would like to welcome back members returning from their summer travels and wish our youngest members a safe and successful return to school. The entire Wexford team has been working hard on summer projects and capital improvements as this is a great time of year to refresh our amenities and complete the scheduled infrastructure projects. I want to first commend Dan Odgen for a very diligent and professional job on the harbour wall repairs. This preventative maintenance project, which is assessed every five years, is a heavy lift for Dan requiring individual communication with each harbour homeowner, scheduling the repairs with the contractor, finalizing the billing and closing out the project. I want to thank all the harbour homeowners who were affected, and your patience and understanding was very helpful. I also want to thank Chris Neff and his team on the execution of our yearly aerification and summer maintenance practices on the golf course. Chris’ team is small and mighty, and they continue to amaze me on the aerification practices with a small closure time to the membership. In addition, we have completed the tennis court lift on Courts 1 and 2 along with resurfacing the additional courts. Interior painting of the Clubhouse and pervious parking spots have been completed at the Tennis and Pickleball Center to allow an additional 11 car

parking spaces as we all know parking can be limited at times. Staffing levels continue to be a primary focus for our leadership team and recruitment and retention is equally important to our team and members. While we have had turnover in certain departments, I am pleased to report we are getting closer to being fully staffed in those areas in anticipation for our fall season. Several Food and Beverage employees have been hired along with new employees at the Harbour Center, Golf Shop, Tennis, Golf Course Maintenance, Security and Common Grounds. New members will be featured in our weekly marketing platforms along with the Club Times newsletter so you can further get to know our staff. We look forward to a great second half of the year filled with social vibrancy, camaraderie, and an overall good time!!

Letter from the Board President Hello Neighbors,
well attended for Wexford members and guests. We need to execute well and have both functions be wildly successful. The plan is to support our staff with outside contract staffing, if necessary, to assist in having best possible venue.
In March Club Times, I listed the Board Objectives for 2022 and have reported updates in subsequent articles. At a recent Board workshop, the following priorities for the second half of 2022 were identified which dovetail the earlier stated Board objectives. They are as follows: • Staffing: This is of paramount importance to everyone in Wexford. It involves any necessary recruitment to fill gaps, retention of existing employees, and any wage/pay scale attentiveness we need that will help us succeed and have amenities available to owners. Success here underpins our ability to execute and service the community. This is an area we are challenged and need improvement to stabilize.
• Governance: The Governance committee will assess a “Traditions President committee’ charter and provide recommended policy updates to Wexford rules and regulations.
• Budget: In late summer department managers will begin “Bottom-up, roll up” work in concert with finance to support a realistic 2023 budget for Board approval and Wexford owner vote.
• Employee appreciation event: Several Owners suggested we have a Q3 or Q4 staff appreciation event. We will look at feasibility and venue options
• Amenities Enhancement Plan: Decide by the end of August how and when to proceed with an Owner vote. • September community meeting: Conduct an Owner meeting with the key topics being: Adopt Strategic Plan thru 2025 with updated revisions presented at the June Board meeting; Adopt updated Golf master plan with GG and Golf committee recommendations and cost estimates; State of the union COO report. • Member Guest execution…: Men’s and Women’s events are pinnacle events in Wexford. Both are highly visible,

• Staff and Owner surveys: Accelerate the completion timetable and use feedback as guiding focus for management and community.
• Pier 8: Infrastructure and Yacht Committees have brought this topic to the Board again recently asking for clarity on the use and condition of this asset. We will formalize our efforts, findings and any recommended actions. Thank you for your input, caring, and making Wexford the foremost community in Hilton Head.

Billy Wilkins Billy Wilkins joins the Wexford team as the new Director of Facilities Maintenance. Billy’s role is to oversee projects and manage the maintenance team to ensure Wexford’s facilities are operational and maintained to the highest of standards. He has over 25 years of facilities club maintenance working for Berkeley Hall, Colleton River Club, Callawassie Island and Sea Pines. Billy loves living on Hilton Head and enjoys playing golf and fishing. He also has his Captain’s license.

Foundation announces Legacy Society Is a legacy gift for you? Gifts by will, trust or beneficiary designation — also known as bequests, are the most common way people plan their legacies. Following requests by some of the Wexford members, the Foundation Trustees have created the Wexford Legacy Society to recognize those supporters who wish to be remembered or make a difference by including the Foundation in their estate plans. The Wexford Legacy Society is open to any current or past members who wish to give back to the local community following their time at Wexford. For those who wish to be recognized for their contribution, the Foundation’s Trustees have established recognition levels for donor bequests. Recognition levels start at $25,000 (Gold) rising through
$100,000 (Platinum), to $250,000 and above (Diamond). Members who decide to include the Wexford Foundation in their estate plans during 2022 at the gift level of $25,000 or more will become Charter Members of the Wexford Legacy Society, helping to ensure that the Foundation can continue to improve the lives of those in need for many years to come. Established in 2012, the Wexford Foundation has gained recognition as a highly respected force for charitable giving in the Lowcountry. With over $2 million in financial grants made to over 40 well-deserving local charities, the Foundation has provided much-needed assistance in the health, housing, hunger and education of less well-off adults and children on Hilton Head Island and the surrounding area. Through the enormous generosity of the Wexford membership, thousands of lives have been changed for the better — senior neighbors have retained their independence, young adults have gained language and literacy skills and improved their chances for success in the workforce, families have access to nutritional food, healthcare and affordable housing, and children have preschool and afterschool educational opportunities that they otherwise could not have.

The Magnificent Lives of Marjorie Post by Allison Pataki Mrs. Post, the President and First Lady are here to see you. . . . So begins another average evening for Marjorie Merriweather Post. Presidents have come and gone, but she has hosted them all. Growing up in the modest farmlands of Battle Creek, Michigan, Marjorie was inspired by a few simple rules: always think for yourself, never take success for granted, and work hard — even when deemed American royalty, even while covered in imperial diamonds. Marjorie had an insatiable drive to live and love and to give more than she got. From crawling through Moscow warehouses to rescue the Tsar’s treasures to outrunning the Nazis in London, from serving the homeless of the Great Depression to entertaining Roosevelts, Kennedys, and Hollywood’s biggest stars, Marjorie Merriweather Post lived an epic life few could imagine.
ETC Social hosted its popular beach party on May 25th at the Shipyard Beach Pavilion. The weather was perfect — warm with a nice breeze. The food, catered by One Hot Mama’s, was, once again, fabulous and Neal the DJ provided great entertainment for all. The turnout was our biggest ever with 98 people. Congratulations to our ETC Social cochairs Linda Zychowicz and Mary Navis for putting on a fantastic event! WEXFORD 3D What Wexford 3D is, and why you should join Wexford 3D is an informal group of residents who gather each Monday at 9:00am to “Discover, Debate, and Discuss” topics of interest. Sitting around the table in the Harbour Center with a cup of free coffee in hand, we attempt to solve the problems of the world. We almost always have a guest speaker to guide our discussions, but sometimes it is simply one of us who leads the debate on a topic of interest taken from the newspaper, television or another news source. Begun in the fall of 2011 by a few Wexford members and under the able leadership of our dear friend Grog (the late Dr. Alan Grogono) we have discovered, discussed and debated topics Wexford neighbor Brad Desai as diverse as “A introduces his houseguests Sajida Global Energy and Naseer Durrani. Outlook,” “Vacation Planning,” “The U.S. Role in the World,” “The Longterm Effects of Covid-19,” a travelog by the Poinsettes and Doug Tozour about their trip to the Black Hills, Yellowstone National Park and Mount Rushmore, and the “Origins of Wexford Plantation.”
On the Fourth of July we celebrated our country’s birthday with two very special guests, Sajida and
NEXT MEETING | September 22nd On Thursday, September 22 at 4:00pm we will resume our weekly 3D schedule. Our “kickoff” will be held in the Waterford Room with a special speaker, Wexford neighbor Jan McKelvey, a Civil War docent at the Coastal Discovery Museum and a former docent for “The Civil War in America” exhibit at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Jan will be speaking to us about “The Civil War on Hilton Head Island: Local History, National Impact, Enduring Legacy.” Her Power Point presentation includes historic photographs and narratives; maps; documents detailing how and why Hilton Head Island became the Union headquarters of the Department of the South from 1861-1868. It also shows how emancipation, education, and self-government for enslaved people came to these islands long before the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. Naseer Durrani. Naseer was an interpreter for the U.S. military in Afghanistan while Sajida was a teacher and women’s rights activist in their home country. They described their lives during the early days of the Taliban takeover, the fear, the deaths of loved ones, their efforts to get into the airport and finally their going gate to gate with little food or sleep for four days. Ultimately, they were able to get on one of the last transports out of Kabul. It was a riveting story that kept us all enthralled and on the edge of our seats!

More recently Mark Dryden told us about his career from Australia to Wexford by way of Chicago, Louise Heusinveld regaled us with stories about her experiences boating America’s Great Loop with her husband Dick and we learned about the evolution of automotive safety from Jim Boland. When a bridge and later a condo building collapsed in Florida, Don Schultz lent his expertise to help us understand what went wrong. Marissa Hay spoke about her personal escape from communist Cuba. Obviously, we discuss very diverse subjects! Each meeting is different. Each meeting is interesting.

King Mackerel Tournament September 10th
Following up on the huge success of our Cobia Tournament, there will be a King Mackerel Tournament on Saturday, September 10, with a Captain’s meeting the afternoon before, September 9th, at 4:00pm in the Harbour Center. Kings can be caught offshore or inshore, are great sport, good to eat and fun to have a tournament for! Non-fishermen and women can participate in the weigh-in beginning at 4:00 PM. Hilton Head Circumnavigation September 15th Unfamiliar with the circumnavigation? This is an excellent opportunity to go around Hilton Head and be out in the ocean in company with other boats and your friends! Weather permitting all boats will gather outside the lock around 10:30am to follow the lead boat counterclockwise all the way around Hilton Head. Participants will then raft-up in MacKay’s Creek for lunch, drinks, camaraderie and fun. Before the tide gets too low, we’ll break-up the raft to head back to Wexford, arriving around 4:30 or so. There will be a Captain’s meeting on September 14th at 4:00pm in the Harbour Center to go over details, update the schedule if need be, and explain the rafting procedure for any captains who haven’t done it. Boat Commissioning October 9th The Wexford Yacht Club’s second major social event of the 2022 season kicks off October 9 at 5:00pm. Cocktails will be served on the docks with dinner to follow. The Boat Commissioning is Wexford’s way of welcoming all the new boats into Wexford Harbour each year. If you have a new boat this year, sign up with Mark Dryden in the Harbour Center and participate in our champagne bottle smashing (Mark buys the champagne) to celebrate your new boat! 13 • The Club Times

Less is More
Now, I know this seems counterintuitive and will go against every instinct you may have while at the net: Learn to play your volleys softer! Hitting your volleys hard usually ends up in an unforced error, or accidently hitting the ball deep back to the baseliner then getting lobbed. Train yourself to angle your volleys softly off the court, and use your drop volleys to take away all lobs! If the incoming ball is going 50mph, send it back at 5mph.

Summer Hydration
To properly hydrate for a summertime match, you should drink 12-16oz. of water 1 hour BEFORE stepping on court. On top of that, it is recommended that you drink 4-8oz. on every change over. Take your time on the changeovers. Take a seat, towel off, and drink your water! What to EAT before a match: A great suggestion for what to eat before your match is this: Eat something high in carbohydrates to supply energy, and medium in protein so it is digested quickly. Meals like a turkey sandwich or grilled chicken sandwich. Have an apple and a big glass of water also. About 1 hour before the match, have a snack like a cup of yogurt, a banana, or a Gatorade energy bar.

Get to the kitchen quickly
In Pickleball, the most offensive position on the court is right at the kitchen line. It puts pressure on your opponents and opens up shot angles. You want to get to the kitchen as soon as possible. When returning serve, aim deep down the middle, then CLOSE as quickly as possible to the kitchen line! When you reach the line, bend your knees get your paddle up in the ready position, and be ready to volley!

One of the best feelings in the game of golf is a well struck fairway wood shot. Whether finding the fairway off the tee, or using it to approach into the green, this tip will help with more consistent ball striking.
Many amateur players will quickly pick the club up with their arms and lose distance right from the start. The thought is to extend wide (see picture). Not only does this help with the timing of our backswing, but also helps with loading up for more power to exert into the shot. Notice where the clubhead is in relation to the golf ball. If you can gain a little more width in your backswing, you will soon see the benefits of some added distance and more consistency.
Aerification is a great time for a golf vacation! Director of Golf Scott Hunter and a group of Wexford members traveled to Scotland in June.

Summertime safety concerns During the summer and fall seasons, many will be outside enjoying all that Wexford has to offer, so it is important to remember and think safety while conducting outside activities. Many will be out for evening walks, riding bicycles, or enjoying a leisurely golf cart ride, which will bring us closer or into the roadways. If driving through Wexford, please remember to slow down, drive with caution, while always keeping an eye out for pedestrians. We continue to stress the importance of operating vehicles and golf carts in a safe manner, while stopping at the posted stop signs, or while crossing a roadway or private driveway, to ensure the safety of all. Remember,
you must be sixteen years of age with your valid state license on you while operating a golf cart here at Wexford.
HURRICANE PLANNING A reminder for all: the Atlantic hurricane season is officially from June 1 to November 30. Please take the time to review the Wexford Hurricane procedures as documented on the Wexford website. Use this time to review your emergency plans or create a family emergency plan if you have not done so. A solid plan will help to control and reduce the stress of the moment when an evacuation is called for. For additional information, you can visit the Town of Hilton Head website.
