Dear Members, The Wexford team has been working diligently to enhance our offerings in the member calendar for the first quarter of 2022. I am pleased to announce that as the weather improves, we will be promoting the hours of operation for the new Waves kitchen with the grand opening on Super Bowl Sunday providing football fare items. We will have a standard Waves menu as we move into the warmer months and consistent hours of operation. Stay tuned for more information, and we look forward to seeing you on Super Bowl Sunday at Waves. And don’t forget to check out our Valentine’s Weekend events as well as the first trivia night of 2022 being held later this month. I look forward to working with the Wexford committees this year and pleased to say we had over 110 members apply. The work and efforts of each committee is an important role in the community and the support they provide to our department leaders is critical. One of the Board’s objectives for 2022 is to continue to work diligently on the Facilities Plan while considering the owner survey that was completed in 2021. We also have a well-developed plan for Infrastructure improvements this year to protect and enhance our amenities and the infrastructure that supports those amenities. In concert with Club Benchmarking, we have completed a new Reserve Replacement Analysis. The last Reserve Replacement Analysis was completed 10 years ago and was time for an update. This analysis provides a 20-year outlook on the Wexford Community assets and identifies the replacement costs and useful life associated with the replacement. This will allow us to

Ryan Spence Chief Operating Officer

properly prepare our Capital outlook and funding for years to come. I want to thank you for your continued patience with the construction of the Pickleball Courts, from supplier chain issues and workforce shortages the timeline for this new amenity has been delayed. The final gel surface and painting is now pending based on mother nature as the surface cannot be applied until temperatures are above 45 degrees at night and at least 60 degrees during the day. I look forward to having a ribbon cutting ceremony soon to unveil this new amenity. The leadership team at Wexford hosted an all-employee Holiday Party on January 8th at the Country Club of Hilton Head. We had over 100 employees, guests and spouses attend this event that consisted of great food, entertainment, prizes, and camaraderie. We celebrated our Longevity Program, awarding 20 employees with their 5 - 35-year recognition awards. The Holiday party wrapped up the year with a culmination of robust culture enhancing events further making Wexford the best place to work.

Regards,

Ryan

Letter from the Board President Hello Neighbors,

Facilities Plan survey, previously published on Wexford’s website, indicated strong support for renovation of the existing Clubhouse facility and a rebuild of the Yacht Club and Harbour Center building, including a casual dining venue.

We have a packed First Quarter. It’s well underway with the Board’s primary focus on getting Wexford’s 2022 committee work started, while simultaneously working towards an Owner vote on key elements of our Strategic Plan, most notably Vince Sullivan the projects to update and refresh President Wexford’s amenities in the Facilities Plan. Here’s a look at both initiatives.

Here is a timetable we agreed to as a “Stake in the Ground” with month-by-month actions we plan to take. February • Final design direction established on Yacht Club and Clubhouse • Cost estimating by local General Contractors

COMMITTEES The enthusiasm to be part of our 13 committees was exceptional in 2022 with applications exceeding 110 members. While we could not seat every volunteer on a committee this year, we applaud your enthusiastic support for community involvement. All committees began their work in January and February with the challenge to be a “Conduit of Communication” in Wexford. Committees play an important role in the pipeline of information about what’s happening in Wexford to the community, and it’s vital for committees to receive firsthand communication from their BOD chair/liaison and management co-chairs. Our goal is to ensure that the BOD and all committees are in sync through clear and consistent messaging. Many thanks to all members that applied for committees and, for those that were not selected, there may be subcommittee opportunities throughout the year within which to participate.

Strategic Plan The BOD orientation was expanded to include a workshop on the Strategic and Long-Range Facilities plans. Guest speakers JC Chi, Architect, and Henry DeLozier, GGA, presented status updates on our Strategic plan progress and information resulting from our member survey completed late last fall. The goal, and key takeaway, was to get the BOD aligned in order to inform the community of progress and next steps leading to a member vote. The results of the

March • Develop funding strategy • Member “meet and greet” information groups April • Produce an information booklet complete with project illustrations and descriptions, capital funding and ongoing operating cost estimates May • Town Hall presentation of project booklet, funding methods, member costs • Member Vote A project of this magnitude requires dedicated and focused leadership so I have asked Harry Mellon to quarterback this effort. Harry is well qualified, with his extensive construction management background, past Wexford Board and committee work, and is a long-term Wexford member. He will recruit selected committee members to work with him and move all aspects of the project forward. On a final note, an Executive Summary update on our progress against our 2021- 2025 Strategic Plan will be sent out soon to all members and will include a checklist of progress to date on other important elements of the Strategic Plan. Thanks for being part of Wexford, the best place to live and work on Hilton Head Island!

Sincerely,

Vince

Junior Sailing Program set to sail this Spring

The Club Times • 8

The Wexford Yacht Club is excited to announce the launch of our Junior Learn-toSail program for children ages 6 to 16. The sailing will take place within the safe confines of Wexford Harbor utilizing small Optimist type sail boats, the most commonly used boat throughout the world for learning to sail. Four boats have been purchased and the first classes are expected to begin in April or May. The boats can accommodate two children, have built in floatation, and small sized sail with elevated boom, making them extremely safe. In addition, children will be required to wear life jackets at all times. Sailing instruction will be provided by Harbour Master, Mark Dryden, a certified sailing instructor and other staff as needed, including volunteers. The training will provide a comprehensive introduction to basic sailing and a solid foundation for students who may wish to get more serious about sailing, which is a world-class competitive and collegiate sport. This will definitely be a fun program for children and it is another great use of Wexford’s unique harbour asset! Contact Mark in the Harbour Center to sign up for classes this spring and watch the e-blasts and Club Times for updates on scheduling and other useful information.

Blessing of the Fleet Sunday, March 13 The annual Blessing of the Fleet Ceremony takes place on March 13 on the back lawn (weather permitting) of the Wexford Clubhouse. Join us for this traditional nautical ceremony intended to pass on blessings of good luck and safe travels to all the boats in Wexford Harbour. The ceremony, open to all Wexford members, includes the

blessing by a USCG Chaplain, presentation of colors by the ROTC, plus speeches by regional USCG commanders and other guests. Following the ceremony, dinner will be served. Make your reservations early for the traditionally sold-out event and join your fellow Yacht Club members in kicking off the 2022 boating season in fine style!

Wexford Boat Inspections Saturday, March 19 Are you unsure about what safety equipment you should have on your boat? Do you worry about being stopped by the Coast Guard, SC DNR or the Beaufort County Sherriff’s patrol boat? Do you know how to ensure your boat is in full compliance for Federal and State regulations? Do you know you are subject to steep fines if your boat is not properly prepared and outfitted?

Docktails Oyster Roast The Wexford Yacht Club invites all members to kick off the 2022 Docktails season with a special Lowcountry oyster roast. Just bring a side to share and your favorite winter beverage to the Harbour Terrace for an evening of fun!

This annual process is a great opportunity for all boaters to take 20 minutes each year to focus on safety. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call Terry or Neil. Appointments are required, so call Mark in the Harbour Center to sign up now! Times are limited so don’t be shut out!

9 • The Club Times

Tuesday, February 8 | 5:00pm

Well, your Wexford Yacht Club is here to help! On Saturday, March 19, the Wexford Yacht Club will be providing complimentary boat safety inspections in Wexford Harbour. These inspections, conducted by Wexford Yacht Club members and certified boat inspectors Terry Baehr and Neil Boderman, will be comprehensive checks for compliance with all rules and regulations for boats. Any shortcomings will be identified and following successful completion of the inspection, you will be given a decal for your boat which indicates your boat has been inspected.

‘2022 New You’ Friendly Communication

Golf Course Care & Maintenance

We look forward to another successful year in this fantastic community, with a thriving golf course, and plenty of new members interested in playing the game. Let’s take the time to refresh our habits and establish continuity, as we see increased play and participation throughout the entire year. Please be mindful that the Golf Shop appreciates a quick phone call or a friendly visit to let us know you are here for your tee time, and who else might be playing in your group. This helps us with appropriate member charges and provides us accurate round counts we can track throughout the year.

Increased play on the golf course means we need to have increased awareness about taking care of our beautiful fairways, greens, and bunkers. Our amazing maintenance team does a phenomenal job providing perfect conditions all year round, but it is up to us as players to help maintain these conditions throughout the round. Please be mindful that all divots need to be filled with sand, bunkers should always be raked after usage, and pitch marks on the greens must be repaired. A great habit to get into for the new year is to replace your pitch mark on the green plus another one, while awaiting your turn of play.

Ladies Team Match Wednesday, February 9 Please note, the golf course will be closed until approximately 3:00pm for this event.

TENNIS TIP

Mix up your return game

Too often, we see players get into a routine or pattern by hitting every return of serve crosscourt away from the net person. While this should be the play usually, mix it up especially when you are returning against a softer second serve. Attack the net player’s side of the court by going down the line, throw up a lob over the net person, and don’t forget the all-important DROP SHOT the server! Anything you do to create uncertainty for the serving team will pay off.

Coming to the net after hitting a return of serve is a useful tactic because it adds pressure to your opponents. By quickly moving into the net, you give your opponent less time to react when you play your second shot. Also, by moving to the kitchen line, you are more likely to get a nice high ball when you are at the net that you can hit downward and with speed and angles that will limit your opponent’s reaction time.

13 • The Club Times

Many players return serve and move towards the net but don’t actually get there by the time their opponents are hitting the ball. While this isn’t the end of the world, being several feet back of the line is difficult for two reasons. First, you aren’t as close to your opponents as you could be. That means when you hit, the ball has farther to travel and they will have more time to react. Second, by being too far away from the kitchen line it less likely you’ll get a high ball and more likely it will be low. This makes you more susceptible to receiving one of those annoying balls at your feet.
