As I enter into my second month on the Wexford team, it has been a busy period of learning the culture and club environment. My initial assessment has provided the opportunity to meet many of you in person and learn what makes this community so special and the importance of sustaining the traditions of Wexford while also providing new exciting programming for all to enjoy. Starting this month, Waves will be open on Thursdays. Additional plans for the dining schedule will bring some variety of theme nights on Fridays in September and October to bring some fresh concepts for your enjoyment. I’m happy to see the Thursday evening “Happy Hour” and dinner have regained their popularity and want to compliment Chef Josh for expanding the hors d’oeuvres and menu options on the fare offerings. Please remind your family and guests when visiting and enjoying the Club to check in at the golf shop and tennis shop before they use the amenities. We have seen a large influx of usage and to improve the member experience, we want to ensure that all are enjoying themselves yet adhering to the rules and regulations. We have seen too many pool towels disappearing and would appreciate everyone leaving or returning towels that may have been removed accidentally. I am pleased to see some recent positive changes in our Food and Beverage operations with the promotion of Vivienne Smith to Assistant Food and Beverage Manager. Vivienne is a very important part of the Wexford family having worked here for over 16 years and is very deserving of this career advancement. You may have met or seen a new face in the clubhouse with Frederick Hamilton joining us for a temporary assignment to oversee the Food and Beverage operations until we find a permanent replacement to the former Manager, Daniel Clark. Frederick is a seasoned professional with experience from the Homestead resort, Boca Raton Resort and several Bahamian resorts including Sandals properties in senior management. We hope you will attend the September 11th Memorial as we honor and remember the victims of 9/11. This year’s commemoration will include a special tribute to all branches of the Armed Forces. Please plan on arriving prior to 8:30am. In conclusion, I want to thank you all for the warm welcome extended to me in my first month and providing me with valuable insight and suggestions on making Wexford a better community and Club.

One of the highlights will be a Wexford Member Community Meeting. The meeting will include an update from Interim GM Craig Martin on his impression and initial experiences at Wexford. I think Craig’s perspective will be fun and enlightening. Since joining us in July, Craig’s culture of high energy and enthusiasm has had positive momentum for all of us, and something to build on. It’s great to see and hear such encouraging feedback from members. His MBWA style (management by walking around) has helped bring member engagement to the forefront. Kudos to Craig for making this happen! Other topics to be covered are updates to the Strategic Plan and the Golf Master Plan. Date and time for the meeting will be announced soon. We have begun the search for a successor General Manager to Craig with Denehy Partners. The search is expected to take two to three months. I have received candidate resumes and contact information from Wexford members whom they feel Wexford may want to consider. These have been forwarded to the search firm. Going forward if you have any recommendations, please use the QR code to direct them to the Denehy Partners listing, which will provide information on Wexford, the General Manager position and includes an application to submit. Carolyn Kepcher is leading this search for Denehy and will act on any applicant submitted. Thanks for sending any qualified candidate to her directly at (203) 319-8228 or carolyn@denehyctp.com

BOOK CLUB

One of the hidden gems at Wexford is the tournament croquet lawn located across from the children’s playground. There is an active group of croquet players at Wexford and they welcome new players. With minimal start-up instructions, anyone can play and enjoy this game — even the first time out. Whether you’re a seasoned croquet player or looking to pick up a new sport, the Wexford Croquet Club invites you to join them during the week on Mondays and Thursdays. I like to think less and keep it simple. We want to first figure out our read and trust it. Most of these shorter putts do not have time to break much, so rarely do we need to aim too far left or right of the hole. From here, we want to commit to our read and strike a solid putt.

I think most of us would love to hole a few more short putts during our rounds. These “momentum boosters” are vital for better scoring. These putts could be for a birdie, par, or even a bogey, but all equally important to keeping the round alive.

Every year, more and more are people practicing, which is great to see. Did you know Golf Operation buys 700 dozen range balls twice a year? Yes, that’s 16,800 range balls every year! By the end of the cycle, only about half are left. Where do they go? Some go into the woods on the right — hint: lessons can Wherehelp. else do they go? I hate to say it, but some people, especially guests, take them to play on the course, which is not permissible. As it stands now, there are still shipping delays on the balls, so the next shipment will probably not arrive until mid-October. Therefore, the balls that remain will be hit more often, which means they will look used and not perform as well. And the less balls we have, the more often the staff needs to pick the range, or perhaps close it, to have enough balls for the next day.

TOWELS The Golf Operation buys 240 towels approximately eight times a year. That is 1,920 towels which are reusable. Where do the towels go? Perhaps they are on boats, carts, in garages, etc. Please bring back the towels.

TEES The Golf Operation buys a lot of tees every year (which would be a lot more if they were wood). If you looked in your bag, how many of these tees do you have and do you really need more than three? And please pick up tees on the course.

Inside Five Feet

TimesClubThe•11

Do you really want to hit an ugly wornout range ball? Please help us by not removing the range balls and, when practicing, aim toward the left and middle side of the range.

Simply, keep a steady head during your putting stroke, and allow your eyes to follow the golf ball down your target line. This process will improve contact and a better roll of your golf ball, resulting in more short putts being holed.

According to some experts, love in tennis may come from the French word for egg, l’oeuf, because an egg looks like a zero. Others insist it’s so named because the game is being played for love, i.e., without any bets being placed. Ironically, the French don’t use the word love in their game. They call it zero. Wexford welcomes Brian Kiggans Brian Kiggans attended college at Robert Morris University, where he was a 4-year letterman.
