Synchro Stars fundraiser

Organizing first-ever Colour Run

T

he plans for Weyburn’s first-ever Colour Run are underway, and the Weyburn Synchro Stars will be hosting the colourful fundraiser.

“I have seen and participated in a few Colour Runs, and feel that this would be a great community event,” said Tanya Pohl, president of the Synchro Stars Synchronized Swimming Club.

Their fundraiser is called “Colour Splash” and it is planned for Sunday, June 5. Tanya noted that not all the details of the fundraiser are finalized yet, but the “Colour Splash” will start and end at the Tom Zandee Sports Arena.

While participating in the Colour Run fundraiser, Colour Runners are doused from head to toe in different colors. Colour Runners can choose to run or walk in the fundraiser, since it is all about fun.

The “Colour Splash” will be five kilometres in length. Registration is now open for the fundraiser.

There are early bird registration prices too, with prices set at $40 for adults and $20 for ages seven to 13 when the runner registers before April 15. After that date, registrations are $50 for adults and $25 for ages seven to 13. There is no cost for children under the age of six to register, but an adult must be registered with the child.

“We will be looking for volunteers to help make our race day a successful one,” said Pohl.

Volunteers are also being sought, to provide assistance with the different parts of the Colour Run. There will be a couple of colour stations that will require volunteers, plus a lunch after the fundraiser.

Any businesses or organizations that want to help support the “Colour Splash” by becoming a sponsor are also encouraged to contact Tanya Pohl for more information. She noted that sponsorships are available for the colour stations, T-shirts, prizes and other parts of the race.

The Weyburn Synchro Stars provide the community with high quality synchronized swimming programming. Their goal is to foster fun, sportsmanship, team spirit and goalsetting. They ensure that athletes are exposed to all levels of skills and opportunity. They ensure that the club’s human, physical and financial resources are managed in a responsible manner with an emphasis on long term planning.

Their aim is to maintain effective communication within the club membership and externally with other agencies, partners and the media.

Lorne Klein, PAg Regional Forage Specialist, Weyburn, Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture When seeding perennial forages, there is a common understanding that 10 lbs/ac is the standard correct seeding rate. Not necessarily. A sufficient seeding rate for a seed mix depends upon the plant species you have chosen and the amount of each you include in the mix.

Ultimately you want to know the number of seeds per square foot of each species you are applying.

According to CFIA regulation, plant species in a forage seed mixture are listed as “percentage by weight�.

This is necessary to maintain consistency across the industry. However, the percentage by weight is not representative of the seed counts.

The approximate number of seeds/lb varies significantly from one species to another. A chart in the Ministry of Agriculture Forage Crop Production Guide lists the approximate number of seeds/lb of each of the forage species. The seed counts are based on bare, uncoated seed.

Comparing legumes, sainfoin has 30,000 seeds/ lb and uncoated alfalfa has 200,000 seeds/lb. Comparing uncoated grasses, hybrid brome has 90,900 seeds/lb and crested wheatgrass (diploid) has 220,000 seeds/lb.

A seed mix including 30 per cent alfalfa, 20 per cent sainfoin and 50 per cent hybrid bromegrass by weight would contain about 111,450 seeds/lb.

For each pound per acre applied, you would be seeding about 2.6 seeds/ft². A seed mix including 10 per cent alfalfa, 40 per cent sainfoin and 50 per cent hybrid bromegrass by weight would contain about 77,450 seeds/ lb. For each pound per acre applied, you would be seeding about 1.8 seeds/ft².

When over seeding across periodic wetland and riparian areas, a combination including 50 per cent alsike clover and 50 per cent reed canary by weight would be an option.

This seed mixture would have about 937,500 seeds/lb.

For each pound per acre applied, you would be seeding about 21.5 seeds/ft².

The calculations above are based on bare seed. Ask your seed supplier if some or all of the seeds in your mix are coated, and the amount of coating. Typical coatings can reduce seed counts by 35 per cent for alfalfa and 50 per cent for grass.

The target number of seeds to apply per square foot varies across soil zones.

Generally the range is from 20 seeds/ft² in the Brown Soil Zone to 30 seeds/ft² in the Black Soil Zone. These rates tend to be on the higher end of the scale. Rates 25-50 per cent lower can be used if you are confident that your agronomic practices and establishment conditions result in a high percent of plants establishing.

Seeding rhizomatous species such as cicer milkvetch, hybrid brome and smooth brome enable lower seeding rates as these species have the ability to spread and fill in a stand over time.

Adding to the seed mix decision is the amount of each species you are targeting for the stand, both in the short and long term.

A seed mix with 10 seeds/ft² of both alfalfa and meadow bromegrass will normally be dominated by alfalfa for the first 3-4 years. As the stand gets older, depending upon fertility and haying or grazing management, the normal progression is that the alfalfa declines and the grass becomes more dominant. For fields you intend to bale in the early years and graze in later years, you will want to start with a high percentage alfalfa stand, so you have sufficient alfalfa plants as the stand gets older.

Perennial forages are seeded only once every 5-55 years. Take the time to plan your seed mix and increase the chance of getting the stand you are targeting. For more information on seeding rates for seed mixtures, contact the Agriculture Knowledge Centre in Weyburn.

BALANCING YOUR BUDGET

There are many families who are struggling to stretch their dollars, especially during the difficult economic time in the province. But it is important to balance your budget, in good times and bad.

here are a lot of families who are very familiar with the strain of a difficult economic situation.

The economic strain is one that reaches beyond the household, as it affects municipalities, provincial governments and federal governments.

The trick of handling the economic strain is knowing how to balance your budget. It is a very troubling situation right now, since both the federal and provincial governments have confirmed that their budgets would likely be deficits. A deficit budget is never a good thing for a government, since sometimes there can be negative impacts on services and programs.

One has to wonder why there wasn’t more incentive for our governments to put aside some of their money a few years ago, when we had much greener pastures for the economic situation.

While I understand that it is important to invest in services and programs while the money is available — it is still very important to make sure that some money is put aside for future programs and services.

When it comes to my own household budget, I am very careful to ensuring that not only do I have the funds necessary to pay my bills and buy groceries — but it is also important that I am putting funds away for future emergencies. With careful consideration on the expenses, it is possible to indulge in something special every now and then, but also manage the important financial considerations of paying off bills in a quick and timely manner.

It is never a good situation to be in debt. Many studies have reported that there are many emotional health risks when you are in a difficult financial situation.

Those who struggle to pay off their debts and loans are more than twice as likely to experience a host of mental health problems, including depression and severe anxiety.

These feelings are not just limited to being concerned when it is a personal household debt situation.

We also must remember that the deficits at the national and provincial level can have a negative effect on the emotional state of rate payers.

No one wants to lose funding to the valuable programs or services in their communities. We all understand that government funding is vital to infrastructure, health care, education and social services.

But the challenge exists that as soon as there is a deficit budget — programming is cut in these areas.

It is also important to be educated about debt, and how to handle the options available. Take the time to speak to the qualified debt management specialists at any of the local banks, since their advice can be very valuable. The most important thing about debt is to work your way out of it, instead of being in a constant state of turmoil and distress.

Even in these difficult economic times, let’s all find ways to save a little money for the future, while still supporting the organizations and programs that are important to our community.

And if you have ideas or suggestions for those who are at the municipal, provincial or federal level — make sure that your voice is heard.

According to Whom?

Recalling her keen sense of humour even in the direst of circumstances has often reminded me to look for the best, even when things are seemingly at their worst.

Listening in my heart to her daily habit of playing the piano is a warning not to lose my song, no matter what.

Though those and many other memories are poignant, I can’t forget her quiet but determined way of letting me know who was boss.

“According to who?” I recall challenging her after I’d disobeyed then tried to defend my action. Her immediate answer was concise and customary: “According to me!” In that case, there was no further discussion required.

According to whom? Ever been asked this question? Asked it of anyone else?

As an adult I now realize that any type of authority can be used wisely or wickedly.

Dear Sara Who you “owe” is yourself. What you “should have” done only matters if you plan on changing your behaviour and/or beliefs. You cannot change your past, only your present and future, and you most certainly cannot change someone else. I would suggest that you and your husband consider Couple Counselling.

Often couples get in to ‘patterns’ of behaviour and communication.

A counsellor can help you to look at new healthy and effective patterns so that your communication will be increased. I can’t guarantee anything but since you wrote I expect that you want to do everything in your power that

can be done.

Dear Marsha Violence against women is a serious problem in our society. Most men love and care about women and yet frightening numbers commit acts of violence against the women they say they love. Violence is a learned behavior. Men’s violence is a result of the way many men learn to express their masculinity in relationships with women, children and other men. Most individual acts of men’s violence are a poor attempt to assert control over women and children. The need for control comes from insecurity, lack of self esteem and a belief that they should be superior and in control. As violence is a learned behavior, men can learn to change their behavior with the help of a trained counsellor.

Dear Ellen I met this guy at a friend’s wedding; we had a good time and ended up at my place. He spent the night and we ended up “doing it”. I wanted to have a good time with him but didn’t want to have sex. I kept telling him no and pushing him away but he thought it was a game. Is this considered sexual assault or was I asking for it?

Dear Terri Sexual assault is any unwanted sexual contact forced on a person without her/his consent and may range from non accidental touching to forced intercourse. Sexual assault is about power and control, not sex. You have the right to say NO to anything at any time.

Volunteers sought for Museum

The City of Weyburn is currently in the process of preparing the Soo Line Historical Museum for its reopening on March 19, 2016. They are seeking for volunteers to join the newly-established “Friends of the Soo Line Historical Museum” group.

Volunteers are a vital part of the success at the Soo Line Historical Museum.

The Friends of the Soo Line Historical Museum will assist with events, tours and setting up displays at the museum.

The Soo Line Historical Museum provides people an opportunity to learn about the history of Weyburn. The museum,

which also serves as a tourist information centre, is located in a 100-year-old former power station. The displays includes artifacts used by Weyburn and area pioneers.

Feature displays include the Charles Wilson Silver Collection (at over 5,000 pieces, considered the world’s largest private silver collection) and the Saskatchewan Mental Hospital display.

By Tammy Stendall at the Therapeutic Animal Park Have you been down to the Therapeutic Animal Park and met our lovely girls Priscilla and Taffy?

Priscilla and Taffy are a special breed of goat known as a Myotonic Goat or more commonly a Fainting Goat.

Fainting Goats are born with a hereditary genetic condition that causes their muscles to freeze up when they are startled, causing them to become stiff legged and sometimes fall over in what appears to be a faint.

This frozen reaction only lasts about 10 seconds, is totally pain free and the animal never actually loses consciousness, It is called Myotonia Congenita and it can also be found in many other species of animal and in humans.

Fainting Goats have obscure origins.

They first appeared in Tennessee in the 1880s when a farm labourer, reputedly from Nova Scotia, Canada, showed up at the farm of Dr. H.H. Mayberry, With him he had four does and a buck, all with an unusual characteristic.

When the labourer moved on Dr. Mayberry purchased the small herd and began raising the breed as it is known

today. But to this day the ultimate origins of this unique animal still remains a mystery.

First raised for meat, but now listed as threatened by the Livestock Conservancy, Fainting Goats make great pets and are no longer raised solely as meat animals.

Being a distinctly landrace breed means they have adapted to fit the conditions in which they live.

Highly maternal and prolific, the does are known for multiple births of twins or triplets and even as many as five kids at one time.

Fainting does can give birth twice a year with no problems. Protective mothers hide their babies for the first few days, but the young are up and active within moments of birth. The kids can be born various colours and have long or short-haired coats.

Fainting Goats are fast becoming a popular breed throughout North America because they are easy animals that adapt well, are able to make the most of what food is available and can give birth twice a year.

Dear Friends, Joy is not a warm, happy feeling you are supposed to have now and then when things are going well. It is not just a state of mind. It is not a fleeting emotion. Joy is a real spiritual force.

The Old Testament book of Nehemiah chapter 8 latter part of verse 10 says: Do not sorrow for the Joy of the Lord is your strength. Can you see how Joy and Strength are interchangeable. They are complimentary. You cannot live a life of faith without being strong in the Lord and when God wants to make you strong, joy is what He uses to do the job.

Friends, just as fear has to yield to faith, discouragement has to yield to joy.

When I am writing about heavenly Joy — I mean overflowing Joy. The secret of this Joy lies in the presence of the Almighty God. In Psalm 16 verse 11 the Psalmists says: In your presence is fullness of Joy. The Almighty God has been revealed to humanity in the person of Jesus Christ. Where do we experience God’s presence? Jesus said “Where two or three are gathered, together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”

Before going to the cross, Jesus said to his disciples: “You now have sorrow, but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice and your Joy no one will take from you.”

Jesus also said to them: “In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer I have overcome the world.”

Dear friends, the word tribulation is from the Greek word thlipsis which means pressure, oppression, stress, anguish and distress. Thlipsis is like spiritual benchpressing. The word is used of crushing grapes or olives in a press.

How come Jesus said when you go through these types of circumstances, Be of Good Cheer? Is it humanly possible to be of good cheer when you’re being crushed in pain? Yes, through God’s spirit that lives in every person who believes Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Joy is part of the fruit of God’s Spirit. As a Child of the Almighty God it resides in you. But you must develop it, confess it and live by it, if you want to enjoy its power.

Reader, do you want this Joy? You can have it free. Come to Jesus. He invites you today and he promises that those who come to Him, he will welcome with open arms.

I would like to close with this wonderful quote by Charles Spurgeon: “A changeable God would be a terror to the righteous, they would have no sure anchorage, and amid a changing world they would be driving to and fro in perpetual fear of shipwreck. Our heart leaps for Joy as we bow before One who has never broken His Word or changed His purpose.

Pancake breakfast to be held at Wheatland

The Wheatland Senior Centre is holding a pancake breakfast on Sunday, March 6 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Everyone is welcome. The cost is $7 per person.

There are two upcoming Tuesday afternoon dances at the Wheatland Centre Country Gold is entertaining on Tuesday, March 1. The McNeils are entertaining on Tuesday, March 8.

The girls, who will also perform individually at the Music Festival, were practising the piece, Celebration Overture. The T.C. Douglas Centre will host the piano portion of the Music Festival starting on Monday, Feb. 29 and going to March 4.

The vocal classes will be held on Mar. 7-9, and the band-instrumental classes will run on Mar. 1011, with the Stars of the Festival to be held on Thursday, Mar. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Cugnet Centre.

City aims to win ‘Go Out & Play Challenge’ The City of Weyburn has accepted the “Go Out & Play Challenge” powered by Saskatchewan Blue Cross, and are requesting that all residents help the city to win.

The City of Weyburn is counting on residents, friends, neighbours and family members to get moving to win this year’s challenge to be held on March 1-10.

Saskatchewan Blue Cross and Saskatchewan in motion have challenged communities across the province to go

out and play for a chance to win $10,000.

The community with the most minutes of physical activity logged during the 10-day challenge will win the grand prize. The City of Weyburn plans to put the $10,000 prize to good use by constructing a new Spray Park that will be located at River Park.

Last year, the community of Norquay took the lead and won the Challenge by logging over 413,000 minutes of physical activity.

It’s easy to participate and register your minutes of physical activity online. Here’s what you need to do every day of the challenge: 1. Be physically active.

2. Log on to the challenge website (challenge. saskatchewaninmotion. ca). Individuals and families can create their profiles starting on Feb. 22.

3. Register your minutes of physical activity from March 1-10 to add to the City of Weyburn total.

Oil respect campaign launched nationally The Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors announced the launch of Oil Respect, a campaign to empower regular Canadians to voice support for the Canadian oil and gas industry.

“Oil Respect is about respect for the facts, respect for workers, respect for the environment, and respect for an industry that has done so much to provide Canadians with jobs, funding for government services, and a higher standard of living,” explained Mark Scholz, president of the Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling.

The Oil Respect campaign will include Mark Scholz speaking at venues across Canada where he will ask regular people to speak out in support of an industry that has done so much to make Canada one of the most admired countries in the world.

Additionally, the campaign calls on the federal and provincial governments to stand up for Canadian oil and gas development and transportation via pipelines, both across Canada and for export to new markets outside our borders.

Scholz emphasizes the importance of hearing from Canadians.

“There were 100,000 oil workers who lost their jobs in this current downturn. We urge Canadians to come to our website at OilRespect.ca.”

“We need you to email letters to your elected representatives, sign petitions for pipelines, join our Facebook community, engage on Twitter, show off our bumper stickers, and to push back against those who spread misinformation about our industry.”

Another goal for CAODC is to petition the governments to recognize February 13, 2017 as Oil and Gas Awareness Day, since that day marks the 70th anniversary of leduc#1, which was a major crude oil discovery made near Leduc, Alberta.

As part of the Oil Respect campaign, Mark Scholz appeared before the House of Commons’ Standing Committee on Finance to participate in pre-budget consultations.

As the federal government considers the next four years of its mandate, Scholz challenged the Prime Minister to “champion national pipeline projects because they are in the national interest of Canadians.”

Scholz went on to say that “if we care about the facts, jobs and our economy we need our elected representatives to fight for pipelines, something we see consistently from Pre-

miers’ Wall and Gallant.”

He further challenged the federal government to renew its commitment to evidenced-based policy.

“We are tired of the misinformation and half-truths spread by foreign celebrities, radical environmentalists, and grandstanding politicians who twist the facts about our industry.”

“So, what are the facts?

Canada’s oil and gas industry meets what are now easily the toughest environmental standards of the large producing nations in the world.”

“It employs 500,000 Canadians, is the largest private sector investor in Canada and contributes 17 billion dollars per year to support Canadian social programs.”

“In 2015, the industry lost 60 billion dollars in revenue, equivalent to los-

ing the entire auto sector from the Canadian economy in just one year.”

On the federal government’s recently announced changes to the National Energy Board, Scholz asked if the federal government’s “unnecessary delays on pipelines mean more unemployment for workers, less revenue to support social programs and, ironically, more oil production from countries with few or no environmental protections.”

The Oil Respect tour begins on February 25 with a speaking engagement at the Red Deer Chamber of Commerce.

The Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors (CAODC) represents Canada’s drilling and service rig industry.

A “working energy” roundtable was held in Cal‑ gary earlier in February, where Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Mark Salkeld, PSAC president and CEO; Rachel Notley, Premier of Alberta; James Carr, federal Minister of Natural Resources; Kent Hehr, federal Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence; and Mar‑ garet McCuaig‑Boyd, Alberta Minister of Energy.

“The meeting went ex‑ tremely well from our per‑ spective,” said Mark Salkeld.

“Both the Prime Minister and the Premier acknowledged the significance of what oil and gas industry means for the province and for the country and in particular for PSAC member companies and oil field services in gen‑ eral. They are both commit‑

ted to helping this industry succeed and will be cham‑ pions for Alberta and Canada and what it takes to bring this country together and support the energy industry for every Canadian’s success and well‑ being.”

“Most of the conversa‑ tions ended with the reitera‑ tion that pipelines and access to tidewater will play a sig‑ nificant role in Canada’s fu‑ ture, that ultimately helps not only Canada as a whole but also areas of the world that will also benefit from our re‑ sponsibly developed resour‑ ces,” said Salkeld.

The focus of the discus‑ sion was on the hard-hit energy industry — for us spe‑ cifically, the oil and gas ser‑ vices sector — and what the federal government can do to put our member companies back to work.

“We explained the enor‑ mous contribution the petrol‑ eum services sector makes to the Canadian economy and how working families and communities across Canada have been impacted by plun‑ ging oil prices … not just Al‑ bertans,” said Salkeld.

PSAC believes that the fed‑ eral government plays an im‑ portant role in stepping up to become a champion for the oil and gas industry. “Our mem‑ ber companies can help the federal government achieve its climate change, environmental and Indigenous relations goals by helping us get large infra‑ structure projects approved including pipelines.”

They want the federal government to put oil and gas services companies and their employees back to work. Poli‑ cies that encourage investment are the best way to protect jobs and assure the country’s abil‑ ity to grow our middle class, fund our infrastructure and so‑ cial programs, and continue to contribute to Canadian’s wellbeing.

Private industry has bil‑ lions of dollars ready to invest, and Canada is fast getting an international reputation for not being able to get major pro‑ jects done. The federal govern‑ ment needs to show leadership on this issue.

“We need to incent large infrastructure development projects which provide inter‑ national market access for oil and gas.”

The federal government is also interested in building relationships with Indigenous communities across Canada.

“In the sector today, we have thousands of Indigenous work‑ ers and the rate of aboriginal entrepreneurs in Canada’s oil and gas industry is three times higher compared to the rest of Canada (Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business).”

Canada can and should be the leader in the global-scale technological innovation that is necessary to support the transition to a lower car‑ bon economy. The ability to attract capital and talent is vital to ensuring that Canada remains part of the global search for technology-based solutions to reduce and man‑ age emissions.

3-D archery event to be held

A 3-D archery competition will be held this weekend by the Weyburn Wildlife Federation’s Archery Club.

The 3-D life-size animal targets will be set up in the old curling rink in Goodwater, where the archery club has an archery range established.

The competition will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 28.

There will be 40 targets in the 3-D round, and 20 targets

in the instinctive bow round.

There will be a competitive and non-competitive 3-D round, plus there will be a fun round, and a two-person best arrow round.

In the fun round, archers can shoot as many times as they want after they shoot their first round.

For the two-person best arrow round, it will be held each day with the winner receiving 50 per cent of the entry fees. Registration for adults, over 18 years of age, is $20 in the first round, and

$15 for additional rounds.

For youth competitors, aged 10-17, the cost is $10 for the first round and $5 for other rounds. Competitors 10 and under can participate free of charge.

I wipe them off but would like to know how to care for them. I really need your advice. Gwen.

Dear Gwen, It is true that over time the ink, glue and paper of books begins to carry a certain musty “old” smell.

Books react with heat, light, acidity, smoke and moisture as well as the chemicals used in book production.

The best way to store your books is in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight. An easy short term solution for freshening old books is to place a dryer sheet between several pages of the book. Leave for one week to absorb odors.

An effective long term solution is to place two or three books inside of a sealable bag. Sprinkle the books with baking soda.

Close the bag and place it inside of a freezer. Leave for a week. Remove the bag from the freezer and the smell should vanish. Some experts suggest that freezing books may be harmful to them and recommend sealing them in bags with baking soda then leaving them at room temperature until the odor disappears.

Dear Reena, Please tell me how to keep the bed skirt on my queen-size bed from slipping every time I go to change the sheets. I have tried pinning it but it pulls away and rips. It does not have any elastic. Ann. Dear Ann, Purchase a roll of Velcro. Cut Velcro into three inch strips. Separate the strips and attach one half of each Velcro at all four corners and one in the center of the box spring.

Attach the other half of the Velcro to the bed skirt. If the Velcro does not stick to the fabric purchase fabric glue/cement,

at a department store and adhere it to the sticky side of the Velcro.

Or hold the bed skirt in place using furniture tacks.

Or purchase No-Slip Shelf Liner or a rubber floor mat, put either on your box spring before draping the skirting onto the bed to hold the skirt in place.

Dear Verna, This is a simple and affordable recipe to combat dry skin. Into a container combine: One cup baby lotion, half cup petroleum jelly (Vaseline) and half cup Vitamin E Cream.

Mix with an electric mixer until smooth. Store in a sealable container.

Dear Reena, Whenever I make Rice Krispie treats I become frustrated trying to flatten the cereal and marshmallows in the pan. They become stuck to my fingers and I end up with pieces of cereal all over my hands.

Dear Willy, Here are three easy ways to flatten cereal treats in the pan. Press cereal with a wet or frozen metal spoon. Or wet your hands with water before spreading the cereal. Or spoon the mixture onto the pan; lay a piece of plastic wrap over the cereal. Flatten the cereal with your hands; nothing touches your fingers.

Did you know? You can add fiber and other heathy ingredients to your Cereal Cake. Melt together one quarter cup butter or margarine, and 40 marshmallows; add a variety of other cereal brands mixed together and some flax, bran, hemp or oats.

Dear Reena, So that tubs and showers never accumulate scum and always shine: Wipe down all wet areas of your shower stall with a bath towel after each use.

There will never be mold growth as long as all wet towels are removed from the bathroom and dried either on the line or in the dryer. On exiting, turn on the bathroom fan for a half hour and if mirrors are steamed, wipe down with a lint free cloth.

To clarify, the date on milk is not an expiry date.

It is the ‘Best Before Date’.

The milk quality deteriorates after this date, and is still usable for several days. There is no designated date for when milk becomes “sour”. Phyllis.

Families and friends swim and play with balls in the indoor pool at the Weyburn Leisure Centre, as the youth were enjoying their week off school for the February break. Among the swimmers were children from the Sun Country Kids Club, and 4-H members from District 7 clubs.

The Weyburn Humane Society is expecting another busy year, especially with ongoing renovations and repairs required at their current animal shelter.

“We had a lot of repairs that needed to be done such as plumbing, wiring, painting, drywall, kennel renovations,” said Pam Arndt-Schick, president of the Humane Society.

“This list could go on and on.”

One of the goals for the Humane Society is to raise enough funds for a new animal shelter.

“One of our biggest and future dreams is that of a new shelter,” said Arndt-Schick. “We had blueprints drawn up as to what we would like our new facility to look like, so that it would accommodate all the needs for proper care of the animals.”

“We have done major fundraising to try to get money together to purchase land. Currently we have a couple of possibilities that we are looking into, but nothing set in stone yet,” she added.

During her president’s report at the Humane Society’s annual general meeting, Arndt-Schick noted that they had many successful fundraisers in 2014.

“We had great success with all the fundraisers we put on this past year.” Some of the fundraising events during 2015 included two garage sales, bake sales, hot chili lunches, Kilometres for Kennel, a Thanks for Giving donation from Pet Valu Weyburn and their Raise the Woof fundraising event.

“These events take a lot of planning, setting up and taking down. The garage sale as well as Raise the Woof are two of our biggest fundraisers, which bring in the most amount of money,” said Arndt-Schick. She noted that success of their fundraisers is due to their board members and volunteers who support the fundraising events.

This was also the first year that the Humane Society had a shelter director, which was a huge asset to the shelter. “This has been a very positive move for us as it enabled some of the board members to not be at the shelter filling in as much,” said Arndt-Schick.

In the financial statements released by the Weyburn Humane Society, the organization had revenue of $186,201 in 2015. This was an increase over the $149,888 that was reported during 2014.

Their expenditures of $158,133 was also increased from the reported $134,688 during 2014. Overall, their income from operations for 2015 was $28,068, nearly double of the income over operations reported in 2014.

Pet Valu Weyburn is hosting an exciting fundraising event for the Prairie Sky Dog Rescue.

The Easter Bunny will be appearing at Pet Valu for the fundraiser on Saturday, March 12.

All community members are invited to come to Pet Valu and get their photo taken with the Easter Bunny, for a $10 donation. The photo opportunities are open to all pets and children.

All proceeds are being donated to Prairie Sky Dog Rescue. Prairie Sky Dog Rescue is a registered non-profit organization based in southern Saskatchewan, Canada.

They focus on training, re-homing and providing dogs with the opportunity of a life.

They rescue dogs of all types, from a variety of situations (abandonment, neglect, surrenders), assess them and place them in foster homes until they can find them permanent loving homes that are a good fit for each individual.

While dogs are in their care, they not only receive proper veterinary treatment, but they also work on training and dealing with any behavioural issues to make the transition into their adoptive homes as successful as possible.

Scholarship recipients win Kopec memorial

Recipients were recently selected for the Clifford J. Kopec Memorial Award, presented by SAIT Polytechnic awards night for the 2015-16 academic year.

Many of Cliff’s family and friends donated to ensure this ongoing scholarship was possible. Cliff passed away in August, 1985. His parents were the late Val and Ollie Kopec. His family includes sister Barbara Kopec and nephews Anthony and Nathan Kopec.

The students who received the Clifford J. Kopec Memorial Award were Max Landi and Jillian Fitzgerald, both from the Petroleum Engineering Technology division.

Each year, more than $4 million in awards are available to SAIT students in almost every program through the generosity of industry, alumni, staff, faculty and friends.

Receiving a student award can make the difference between wanting to pursue a post-secondary education and being able to finish a program at SAIT. In 2016, SAIT will mark its centennial year. Vision loss might result in hallucinations

A new study conducted by the CNIB has found that one in five Canadians with vision loss who were surveyed experience visual hallucinations, known as Charles Bonnet Syndrome.

The study, titled “Prevalence of visual hallucinations in a national low vision client population”, published in the most recent issue of the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology, is the largest and most comprehensive of its kind.

It represents the first major study of CBS due to vision loss across of the three most common eye diseases — age-related macular generation, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma — with 2565 study respondents over 40 years of age who attended a CNIB low vision clinic.

“Many doctors believe that this phenomenon is very rare, however this study shows that it’s actually quite prevalent,” said Dr. Keith Gordon, study author and Vice-President of Research at CNIB. “People are afraid to tell their family, friends and even doctors that they’re experiencing hallucinations for fear of it being misunderstood as mental illness. With these findings, we are now able to shed more light on CBS and help raise awareness within the medical community and the general public about how prevalent it actually is.”

Widely considered quite rare among the medical community, the study shows that in fact CBS is a common condition among people with serious vision loss, characterized by temporary visual hallucinations. CBS is not a mental illness, nor is it a symptom of dementia or any other disease.

Rather, it is a condition specifically related to vision loss. Lack of awareness of this condition can cause confusion and concern among those experiencing and diagnosing it. While it is not yet known exactly what causes CBS, researchers are beginning to believe it is related to an attempt by the brain to fill in information that would normally be obtained from the eyes.

CBS hallucinations only affect sight, not hearing, smell or touch. The hallucinations may seem “real” (like seeing cows in a field when the field is actually empty) or “surreal” (like seeing dragons). Most frequently, people will see patterns or simple shapes, however there are many accounts of more complex hallucinations, such as the following examples: Little men holding umbrellas at the end of the bed.

The CNIB study also showed: There was no higher probability of hallucinations between any of the three ma-

jor eye diseases (age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma) Respondents who experienced greater levels of vision loss had higher chances of experiencing hallucinations Although vision loss occurs more frequently in older people, the risk of developing CBS does not increase as people age.

Participants in the study were asked if they saw patterns, shapes, people or animals that they knew were not actually there. Responses were cross-tabulated on the basis of age, sex, eye disease, and visual acuity. CNIB acknowledges funding support from Bayer Health Care for the “Prevalence of visual hallucinations in a national low vision client population” study.

World Day of Prayer event set at St. Vincent

A World Day of Prayer celebration will be held at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church on Friday, March 4 at 10 a.m.

The worship theme is: “Receive children, receive me.”

Everyone is invited to share in the powerful experience of prayer, service and fellowship. Similar services will be conducted in the afternoon for the residents of the special care homes by various churches in the community.

The national flower of Cuba is the white butterfly jasmine.

Cuban women have used the flower not only as an adornment for their hair, but also to transmit messages during liberation wars, and as a sign of their being Cuban.

This is why the white butterfly jasmine was chosen as the emblem for the 2016 World Day of Prayer service, written by the World Day of Prayer committee of Cuba. The service transmits their witness and experience of being Cuban and Christian, even when their faith meant isolation within the country they love.

Offerings received during the World Day of Prayer service have provided grants to various projects throughout the world.

In 2015 grants were given to Africa, Asia, Central America, South America, and the Middle East.

As well, various organizations in Canada received over $43,000.

Christians in over 170 countries and in 2,000 communities across Canada will gather to learn about, pray for, and celebrate Cuba in solidarity with the women of Cuba through the World Day of Prayer. Residents are invited to participate in local World Day of Prayer events in their communities.

World Day of Prayer is a worldwide movement of Christian women of many traditions who come together to observe a common day of prayer each year, and who, in many countries, have a continuing relationship in prayer and service.

Through World Day of Prayer, women are encouraged to become aware of the whole world and no longer live in isolation; to be enriched by the faith experience of Christians of other countries and cultures; to take up the burdens of other people and pray with and for them; and to become aware of their talents and use them in the service of society. Through World Day of Prayer, women affirm that prayer and action are inseparable and both have immeasurable influence in the world.

Weyburn 4-H Beef Club has speaking contest

The Weyburn 4-H Beef Club held their monthly meeting on Feb. 8. The big event for the month was the club public speaking which was held on Feb. 17. Bev Gordon and Rae Keefe judged the speeches for the evening.

The club had a pizza party before with every family bringing a dessert. It turned out to be quite the entertaining evening.

The topics ranged from stories of old trucks, sheep, pioneer days, Harry Potter, love of music, and lots of sports stories. It just shows that the members have a wide variety of interests outside of the cattle industry.

The results of the speaking were: Cloverbud, first place, Jade Charlton, and in second, Steele Sylvester. In the junior category, first was Shelby Williamson, and second was Liam Evans. In the intermediate category, first was Gregg Wiens, and second was Kane Hooper. In the senior category, first was won by Kienen Piper.

These members went on to the area public speaking which was held on Sunday. The top two from each age group go on to the district public speaking, which will be held at Tribune Hall on Sunday, March 20.

The club learned of some future events planned for the area, including a regional ski day at Mission Ridge on March 8.

The club needed a representative to go to the district meeting.

Shelby Williamson offered to represent our club at it.

The Regina Steer and Heifer show is in Regina on Feb. 2528. It sounds like the club will have a good representation at this show so will have a report for that next month. The Yorkton Steer and Heifer show is on March 31-April 2.

The club’s next meeting is on Monday, March 14.

This was a public information meeting held at McKenna Hall by the Syrian Refugee Committee. The Weyburn committee is making arrangements for three families and a single male to come to the city. A fundraising supper will be held at McKenna on Saturday, Mar. 19, to raise funds to cover the families’ costs for one year.

CT Services now available in southeast A state-of-the-art computed tomography (CT) scanner has started operating at St. Joseph’s Hospital of Estevan.

Health Minister Dustin Duncan joined the mayor of Estevan, representatives from Sun Country Health Region, St. Joseph’s Hospital of Estevan, the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation, and local residents for the official unveiling of the region’s new CT scanner.

Residents in southeast Saskatchewan often need to travel to Regina or another location for CT services.

The addition of a CT scanner in Estevan helps meet the increased demand due to population growth, and improves overall capacity for publicly-funded CT services.

“Our region is pleased to be able to add this diagnostic tool that enables physicians to make a timely diagnosis and determine best treatment and care for their patients,” said Marga Cugnet, president and CEO of the Sun Country Health Region President and CEO. “This was possible thanks to the partnership between the Ministry of Health, Sun Country Health Region, St. Joseph’s Hospital and our community donors.”

“We thank the many generous donors from southeast Saskatchewan for their contributions toward this project,” said Becky Conly, director of the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation Director.

“We are so grateful that our donors truly understand the importance of a strong, dynamic healthcare system.

The St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation is proud and honoured to be such an integral part of bringing the CT scanner to St. Joseph’s Hospital, and we are excited to see this dream come to fruition.”

The St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation raised $2.2 million for the CT scanner project. This includes approximately $1.6 million for the required equipment and renovations, and $600,000 for start-up operating costs.

The Government of Saskatchewan has provided $375,000 to Sun Country Health Region for the operation of the CT scanner in the 2015-16 fiscal year, and will provide annual operating costs, estimated at more than $1 million per year.
