Under the parachute

Review Photo 11152 — Greg Nikkel

A large group of students lift this parachute to run underneath it and draw the parachute in after them, at one of the game stations for Haig School’s play day on on June 22. There was a wide variety of other races and activities set up at stations around the school’s yard to keep the students busy.

Belgian musician to feature eclectic sound

A

n up-and-coming Belgian singer and song-writer will be showcased during a gig at the Smaug’s Smoke Shop in Weyburn on Wednesday, July 6 at 7 p.m. Louis De Roo had recently performed at ArtFarm, and will be showcasing his songs again before returning to England. He was in the country to visit with Rylan Chessall, a classmate from the University of Liverpool. “When I was 19, I did my audition for Liverpool, and the first day I was there I met Rylan.” Louis and Rylan then formed the eclectic pop band ‘De Roo’. “I am inspired by melancholic and ambient music, the Blues, and rock and roll as well,” said De Roo. One of the massive hits for the band was “Don’t Hold It Back”, which ran three months on the European music charts and even reached Number One. From this success, De Roo’s band had an opportunity to play for the Belgium national radio. De Roo met Dane Von Hagen, Josiah Haupstein and Brady Kwochka (Private Drive) when they had visited with Rylan Chessall in Liverpool. The members of Private Drive invited De Roo to come to Weyburn. “It had always been my dream to come to Canada,” said De Roo. He said it was a great opportunity to showcase his songs during ArtFarm. He is looking forward to featuring songs that he has written. It is also a great experience to be performing again with Private Drive. “I consider them to be my friends for life,” said De Roo. “Since meeting them at the Liverpool studio, I have seen their progress. They are very talented.” NEW “They will make it far if they keep on doing what they are doing.” Simple with a Twist (Rickee Lee Webster and Heather van der Breggen) have partnered with Smaug’s for this concert. A limited amount of tickets are available by contacting Simple with a Twist.

WJH students help beautify Therapeutic Animal Park

Review Photo 11175 — Greg Nikkel

Students from the Weyburn Junior High work on a project to plant and install new flower pots around the large heart display located in front of the Therapeutic Animal Park. This was one of the activities for the school’s Cobra Games, in which squads of students could sign up to help with a community project and earn points for their squad. The Games were held as part of the final days of activities for the school before it is closed this week forever. The Grades 7 to 9 classes will move over to the Weyburn Comp for classes starting in September.

Solutions & Substitutions Dear Reena, Today I have both, a tip and two questions. My tip: When cleaning your tub or shower, spray it with your cleaner and wipe it down while wearing a pair of dollar store exfoliating gloves. These gloves are inexpensive, reusable, have just enough roughness to clean the scum but not scratch your tub or shower. My first question is: My Jacuzzi tub is seldom used and I’m concerned that there could be scum in the jets which would then flow out into the bath water the next time the tub is used with jets on. How do I clean the jets in my tub? My next question is: My pale blue towels seem to have taken on a yellowish tone in the center area. How can I get them back to one uniform pale blue color? Thanks again for the great advice you continue to give. Lorrie. Dear Lorrie, Clean the water jets in your jet tub by pouring between 8-16 cups of white vinegar into the bathtub. Add enough water to cover the jets. Begin spraying action and run for one or two minutes. Your tub should be ready for some good old fashioned rubber duckies and you. The towel situation does not sound good. Without seeing the fabric, my guess is that either due to bleach products or a manufacturer’s defect, the dye is permanently gone. Your best bet is to re-dye the towels using Rit dye, however it does not always pick-up bleached areas.

By Reena Nerbas

Dear Reena, I have a white jacket that is washable and I tried to wash it, and all that happened was that it floated on the top of the washer. The label says it is 100 per cent polyester and 50 per cent down feathers. I’ve tried pushing it down and it still wants to float on the top, so of course it is not coming clean to my satisfaction. I had no idea this would be such a nightmare when I purchased it. Reena I do hope you can come to the rescue. Thank-you so much Sylvia. Dear Sylvia, Celebrate, if your care label says “washable” because you will save yourself a lot of money with this home cleaning method. Just follow the three R’s (remove, room, rest and rest). Make that the four R’s. Remove: Take off all fur or leather trim. Room: Give your jacket lots of space to move in the water. Wash your jacket in the machine, by itself on ‘GENTLE’. No bleach, just detergent and if your machine has an agitator then its better to wash it by hand in the bathtub. I usually put weights on feather textiles when I am hand washing to keep them submerged in the water. Rest the jacket: Take the jacket out of the washing machine and either dry it by hanging it or, in the dryer (no heat) to fluff it up and bring back the puffiness. Rest: Put your feet up and eat chocolate.

Fabulous Tips of the Week I love my bananas but not overripe ones. Well, I came across a tip and it really works. When you buy ‘somewhat’ green ones from the store, separate them and a few days later they will be yellow and kind of ripe, but inside fairly firm. Thanks for listening to me. Gramma “Bev”. I recently read your solution for a badly burnt pan. Something that works really well is lemon juice. Just pour lemon juice into the pan and put it on the stove to heat up. As it is heating, use a heat proof spatula or lifter and start scraping. As you scrape the black stuff just starts to lift. A couple of years ago my mom had a very black, burnt copper bottom pan that she was using. I tried the lemon juice trick and soon the pan was good as new! Dianne. Yesterday I got a brilliant idea. Both my husband and I are in our 70’s and it’s a bit difficult for us to get down on the floor. Yesterday we had to kneel down to read the serial number on our stove (to have it repaired). To get that number one has to pull out the drawer at the bottom of the stove. The sticker is right there, on the right. But to be able to read it, especially with bifocals, required some major efforts on our part. We did it, and after we were done, my brain clicked in - I have a cell phone with a camera, and it just requires one of us to bend over and click a photo. If it doesn’t work, erase and do another one or use a digital camera. Plus if numbers had been difficult to read, we could have transferred the photo to our computer. I’m going to use this trick next time something rolls under the bed! Thanks again for what you do. Lilianne.

A hot air balloon piloted by Sharon Elliott comes in low over South Hill in the Signal Hill Arts Centre area on June 20, the first day of summer. The weather conditions were perfect that evening as it was calm enough to enable the balloon to fly over the city before coming down.

IS SOCIAL MEDIA ‘NEWS’?

In this day and age, many people are using social media to stay informed with the current issues of their community, province and country. But we have to be careful, as there are always false reports out there Sabrina Kraft news1@weyburnreview.com

W

ith our society so plugged into social media, it is a common occurrence for many people to stay connected to current issues via their Facebook or Twitter feeds. There are many cases of news stories that go viral too, with many people clicking the link that was posted on one of these social media sites. One of the main benefits of social media is that you can stay connected to your friends and your community, no matter where in the world you are checking the social media sites. It is especially convenient for those people who have their social media apps available on their iPhones or iPads. There are also many news outlets who use social media to gain more online hits to their websites. The Weyburn Review and Weyburn This Week are among those news outlets, as there are stories linked to our Facebook site every week. In a way, news media have gone through a great deal of evolution over the years. The way people consume news has changed time over time, and now social media plays a role in delivering these news stories. When you consider the fact that people are checking their Facebook or Twitter sites frequently throughout the day, it should be no surprise that they are visiting news sites only after clicking on a lead that originated on a social media site. There are also many people who feel that social media is their only voice to get their issues or concerns

addressed. Social media can also be a great way to attract attention from celebrities. The instantaneous nature of social media allows people who get their news to have a hand in spreading it around the world. When individuals find themselves on the scenes of events that are considered newsworthy, suddenly they become amateur reporters. They can break the story first on social media sites. But one should be careful when it comes to believing a social media news story as it might not contain the complete information. Social media sites can often have misleading headlines or inaccurate information. There are just as many advertising social media sites, that promote a product, organization or business. There are also cases of links sending people to inappropriate sites. Newspapers and seasoned journalists offer a credibility that these outlets often can’t match. Not all news can be broadcast from the comfort of a home office. Newspapers provide the frontline coverage of everything from local city council meetings to the ongoing war in Iraq. Readers should be able to trust their source, especially when it comes to the news that matters. They should feel that they are getting both sides of the story, and often that is the role that journalists play. We must remember that social media can be an excellent tool to get the news out into the world, but just like any other tool — it should be used with caution and wisdom. Make sure that the news stories that you are liking and sharing are true, accurate, and truly represent your community.

The Secret to Success By Linda Wegner

I’ve been a published writer, author and speaker since 1992, and it is a privilege that I’ve treasured. As much as I enjoy writing these articles, which, by the way have appeared in a number of rural weeklies since 1997, it’s the revenue stream that comes from business writing that’s paid the bills. I intend to continue doing both into the future. Although I’ve written about companies that offer everything from aircraft to zoom booms, whenever I’ve asked the interviewees to tell me their secret to success, three factors are always mentioned: hard work, a willingness to take risks and supplying a product or service that fills an unmet consumer need. There were others but none so consistently cited. A number of events that have occurred in my life over the past few weeks have led to my musing on the role of those three elements in a Christian’s life. As in business, it’s often the unexpect-

k e e w s i h t

ed things that can throw our best-laid daily plans into minor, or major, chaos; that’s when it’s vital to remember who we are and who we serve. First, although we can never buy God’s gift of salvation, devoted service to God and others should be an automatic part of Christian living. As for risks, just ask the one who’s been rejected by former friends or even family members because they have chosen to be a follower of Jesus. Then there is the cost of being honest when cheating seems an attractive option. Finally, there is the matter of unmet needs. There’s joy in knowing a Saviour who not only sees and cares, but can satisfy the deepest longings of every heart! For the record, I’m personally convinced there’s no one who doesn’t need something or someone. “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might.” Work, leaving the results with God.

Temptation is a Natural Thing

Sportsman Den

By Rev. Brian Woods

by Conservation Officer Lindsey Leko

Well, fishing season is well underway and water levels are pretty low in some lakes. But the fish are biting. Remember to take caution when out on the lakes at this time of year because it will be a whole new lake to navigate. With changes in water levels, rocks and structures that were normally much deeper could now be in that danger zone. We have already had a few incidents for overlimits of fish from people who did not know what the limits were for (Weyburn) area lakes. Please take a minute and make sure you know where you are fishing and what the limits are. Refer to the Angler’s Guide when in doubt. There is a new threat to our provincial waters that we want anglers and boaters to be aware of. Aquatic invasive species such as zebra and quagga mussels are a real danger to our fisheries and water infrastructure in Saskatchewan. This has been a huge problem in many southern states and eastern Canada and it is now a real threat to our clean waters. These nasty little critters made their way to North America in the ballast tanks of oceangoing ships. They are slowly making their way from the east and have been found in Lake Winnipeg and in borderstates such as Minnesota and North Dakota. Zebra mussels get their name from the striped pattern of their shells and can grow to a maximum length of about 50 millimetres. A single female zebra mussel can lay up to a mil-

lion eggs in one year. Some of the threats these aquatic invaders poses to our waters include: Valuable sportfish populations could be damaged as the zebra mussels in their vast numbers out-compete other organisms that fish require to feed on. Simply put, they will disrupt our aquatic food chain. The mussels attach themselves to hard surfaces and plug water intake structures such as water treatment plants, and large power plants. Maintenance of these structures in areas already infested with zebra mussels cost millions of dollars annually. The sharp-edged mussel shells wash up on beaches and can be hazardous to unprotected feet. As they are large filter feeders, these mussels can consume organic pollutants, passing them up the food chain to any fish or waterfowl that may prey on them. Zebra mussels can be transferred from one waterbody to another easily as they can live out of water for up to seven days. They attach themselves to boats, nets, docks, swim platforms, boat lifts, and can be moved to a new waterbody on any of these objects. They also can attach to aquatic plants. Zebra mussel larvae can also survive in water contained in bait buckets, bilges, ballast bags or any other water moved from an infested lake or river. To prevent the spread of these invasive species, staff from the Ministry of Environment, including conservation officers, will be conducting road-

side inspections at various locations across the province. If you happen to pass by one of these locations, please slow to 60 km/hr and follow any signs that you may see. If you have a new boat and have only been on waters within Saskatchewan, then your boat would be considered a low risk. However, if your boat was on any eastern waters or waters in the states infested by zebra mussels, then it is considered a high-risk watercraft. The Canada Border Services Agency is also working with the province and will be conducting brief investigations into all incoming boats from the United States. If they pose any type of a risk, these boats will either be denied entry into Saskatchewan or be ordered to the closest decontamination site. Saskatchewan has two decontamination units that will be making their way around the province over the summer. If you purchased a boat in the United States, please be conscientious about the originating state and whether they have invasive species. If they do, and you bring your boat into Saskatchewan, then your boat is a threat to our clean waters. CLEAN and inspect

the watercraft, trailer, equipment and all gear that made contact with the water. Remove all visible plants, animals and mud. Scrub/scrape grainy surfaces that feel like sandpaper, as this could be young mussels too small to see. Inspect the watercraft, trailer and vehicle. DRAIN all onboard water from the motor, livewell, bilge, and ballast tanks. Leave plugs out during transport and storage. DRY your watercraft, equipment and all related gear completely after each use, preferably for at least five days while leaving compartments open to dry. If you find or suspect aquatic invasive species, report any sightings to the nearest Ministry of Environment office or call the TIP Line at 1-800-667-7561. Until next time … keep your boat clean and dry. Editor’s note: Ministry of Environment conservation officer Lindsey Leko has spent more than 25 years as a conservation officer in Saskatchewan. For many years, Officer Leko has contributed a column to local papers on a variety of issues related to hunting, fishing, and other resources related issues.

co-incumbent of the All Saints Anglican Church I have had a number of conversations with people about temptation and sin. Some people believe that if you even think about doing something you know you shouldn’t then you have sinned. My understanding of this topic is: temptation is thinking about doing something you know you shouldn’t — and sin is giving in to those urges. There is a story in the Bible, in the Gospel according to Luke, chapter 4: 1-13 about Jesus being tempted in the wilderness. This story, I believe is a good example of what temptation is and how to overcome it. Sometimes I think we forget that Jesus also faced temptation — that we are not alone when it comes to temptation. Temptation is a natural thing. It appeals to our natural impulses — both good and bad. Giving into temptation is also easier than resisting whatever is tempting us and that is a major part of its attraction. However, following Jesus’ example, we have a road map to resisting temptation. Christ showed us the way by rejecting the things that tempted him. Every time the devil offered more — more bread, more power, more protection Jesus turned the devil down. NO! to the bread, Jesus says, NO! to the kingdoms, NO! to the angelic bodyguards. So by the end of the story the devil still has all his bribes in his bag, and Jesus is free to go. Christ showed us the way by rejecting the things that devil tempted him with. Jesus the Christ resisted the easy way, the natural way — and temptation is the easy way, the natural way — and so can we. Sooner or later — every one of us will get to take our own wilderness exam — just like Jesus did. Sooner or later everyone of us will be tempted by something. I can’t describe what that will be like for you. Only you can do that. All I know for sure is that in the wilderness you learn to trust God. And with God’s help resisting temptation becomes easier with time. So if someone tells you that you have sinned because of what you thought, remind them of the story of Jesus being tempted in the Gospel according to Luke. Thanks be to God.

THANK YOU

Conrad (LaVern) Rivard December 15, 1952-June 10, 2016 There are hundreds of stories we could share about this Son, Brother, Uncle and Friend to many. Conrad was a man with many dreams and plans, a man with vision if you will. Conrad had so many loves in his life. He loved cooking and entertaining, camping and fishing. He had a love for animals gardening and working around his home. One of his biggest trademarks was his love for music and movies. Anyone who came to visit was given the full “Red Carpet experience; he went above and beyond to make you feel welcome, he loved planning out the whole visit from cooking, to the music and movie selection for the evening. He especially prided himself on his elaborate surround sound system; it was second to none! As well Conrad enjoyed sharing his fine finds and collections, everything had a story behind it that he was more than happy to share. Driving with Conrad was a “hair raising experience; it was like he made the rules and everyone had better make way. Conrad was full of life. He had a very boisterous personality, a great sense of humor with so much a character, he loved to laugh, he was someone you would always remember. He truly was the “Uncle Buck of the family. He was Larger than Life. —With love, the family of Conrad Rivard. **26/26

More Grade 3 students are at reading level

Keeping her late niece’s ceiling tile Kenton Field hands Jill Thorn the ceiling tile painted by her late niece, Kim Thorn, on June 21 at the Weyburn Junior High. The school will be closing at the end of June, so made the ceiling tiles available for past students or their families or friends to come by and claim, to give them a piece of the school’s history before the school is boarded up and locked Review Photo 11141 — Greg Nikkel for good.

More students in Grade 3 are reading at grade level, due to the collaborative work between the education sector and the Ministry of Education. School division data from 2015 shows that 73 per cent of students were reading at grade level, compared to 65 per cent in 2013. “We know that students who are reading at or above grade level are more likely to go on to be successful in school and to graduate,” said Don Morgan, Education Minister. “That is why our government committed to ensuring all students are able to reach their full potential by working collaboratively with our sector to improve students’ reading.”

Representatives from school divisions, First Nations education authorities, Métis NationSaskatchewan and the Ministry of Education worked together to determine a Grade 3 baseline for reading in 2013. Since then, there has been a steady increase in Grade 3 reading levels, working toward the goal of having 80 per cent of students reading at or above grade level by 2020 as set out in the Education Sector Strategic Plan (ESSP). Saskatchewan Reads provides supports for teachers to assist students

in achieving their reading goals. It is also a tool to bring people together and focus on a common goal. A companion resource, Saskatchewan Reads for Administrators, helps school administrators provide leadership and direction in literacy development at the school and division level. Saskatchewan Reads and Saskatchewan Reads for Administrators are available online in English at www.saskatchewa n r e a d s . wo r d p r e s s . com. Reading level data is collected by school divisions annually.

Rainbow cupcakes at Pride Day

Review Photo 11199 — Greg Nikkel

Rhiannon Benjamin, left, organizer of Weyburn Pride Week activities, serves up some rainbow-coloured cupcakes following the raising of the rainbow Pride flag at Weyburn City Hall. This event kicked off Weyburn’s first-ever Pride Week. Activities were held at River Park following the flag-raising. Additional Pride Week events included an art night, a walk through downtown, an ice cream social, a coffee-house and bowling.

Have a safe Canada Day

Canada Day and fireworks go hand in hand. What better way to celebrate the independence of our nation than by lighting up the skies above it? But, as is the case with any form of explosives or flammable objects, there are certain risks that come into play that need to be addressed. The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to let professionals handle the lighting and fireworks displays. If you’re inclined to marvel at multicoloured blasts of stars and sparkles dashing

across the sky, attend a preplanned display. Keeping a safe distance between yourself and the fireworks’ launch point serves to keep you and your family protected, but it also ensures that the only ones handling the dangerous elements are those who are trained and have professional experience. That said, if you do end up purchasing fireworks for personal use, take care when purchasing them. Trust only reliable sources that adhere to International

Organization for Standardization (ISO) safety standards. Avoid any fireworks that don’t have any indicator that they’ve undergone safety testing, and never make your own fireworks. Leave the packaging and creation to the experts and to those who have extensive training on the subject. It’s also important to know and obey any municipal by-laws regarding the fireworks. Nothing ruins a celebration faster than an official visit and a fine from by-law officers.
