Giant snowman towers in Assiniboia One home in Assiniboia found a good use for all of the snow that fell over the October 7 to 10 long weekend. This giant snowman had apples for eyes, a carrot nose and a hat and scarf. The house is located near the Elementary School, providing an attraction for children and adults alike. Assiniboia received 53.7 mm of snowfall between October 3 to 10, according to Environment Canada. For the rest of the month, the weather in Assiniboia won’t be favourable for any snowmen. Temperatures are expected to stay in the teens for at least a week and remain above zero for the rest of the month and into early November. Photo by Marusia Kaweski
Southline Students attend Career Expo Submitted by S.Falconer, Southline Glentworth Grade 11 and 12 students, along with Callie Gibson, were in Assiniboia on September 27 for the Assiniboia and District Career Expo. This event was organized by the career development team from Prairie South. Jeff Feeley was at the school to meet with the Grade 12 students on October 4. He has a wealth of knowledge and contacts regarding post-secondary and other options. The Mankota Grade 9 to 12 students attended the Career Fair. Students attended the keynote speakers, as well could speak and listen to various representatives from universities and colleges. School Notes Roxy Johnston came to the school to speak to the Grade 6 to 12 students.
Roxy shared a terrific message with the students about inclusion and celebrating diversity. The key message focused on shunning, accepting or celebrating diversity. It’s so important for the school to celebrate diversity and to be open to new experiences and cultures, and for the staff and students to feel accepted for who they are no matter what. In a small school, it can be difficult at times for students to fit in or to feel accepted so this was a small step in making a difference in the school. Mankota is participating in the Farm Credit Corporation Drive Away Hunger campaign. They were asking for donations of food for the Swift Current Food Bank. Paper bags were sent home with every family. The Farm Credit Canada picked up
food from the school on October 13. Lise Williamson is back from her maternity leave and resuming her duties as caretaker. Taylor Hawreschuk was the temporary custodian. Margaret Walker recovered the reading cushions for Mrs. R. Sayers’ classroom. Cheryl donated a mini aquarium to Mankota School. Social Notes Heather Pluecks spent three weeks in Ontario visiting with her mother, Marna Riopel at Kitchener in September. They had the opportunity to visit with other family members and to spend four days at the cottage with her uncle. They visited the Palmerston area where the Hiltz and Munford families once lived. Lillian’s cousin, Liv Marit Haakenstad of Hamar, Norway, had a book display there for the week. She returned to Mankota with Mavis and Sylvia to visit for a few days. Place in Moose Jaw. She also visited with the local Anderson and Poirier families. Liv Marit Haakenstad spent some time with cousins Gordon, Sonia and Alex Falconer early in the week. They drove her to Moose Jaw on October 5 to meet with Orville and Mavis Myrvang for lunch. They took her back to Regina where she left for Norway. She had her first taste of a Saskatchewan winter. Lillian Klein accompanied Evan and Judy Klein of Kincaid to Medicine Hat on October 5. They helped Warren Klein celebrate his birthday. Steve and Teena Klein and family of Swift Current also joined them. S h e r r y S p r o u l e ’s School of Music is offering a ‘Sunrise Class’ for two-and-a-half to five year-olds on Tuesday morning at the Glentworth Come and Go Club. Vanguard all attended the birthday. Several grandchildren also attended the family supper. Debbie made a Creative Memories book for the occasion. A social evening followed where many family and friends joined them. McCord United Church held their annual Turkey Supper on October 2 with a good crowd in attendance. These weekly suppers on the south line have been wonderful. Carla and Terry Wolfe of Pense visited with her parents, Verna and Harold Hiltz recently. They also attended the supper. Also visiting there were Harold’s nephew, Ron and Ann Wallace of Cambridge, Ont. Mary Jean and Pat Allen of Saskatoon spent a few days with Gordon, Sonia and Alex Falconer.
