Handing out Red Wings pens
Review Photo 4450 — Greg Nikkel
Red Wings right-winger William Cruise handed out Red Wing pens during a visit with a class at Assiniboia Park School. A group of players visited the classrooms and read hockey-themed books or played games with students, and interacted with the students. The school visit was part of the Red Wings reading program, which is being sponsored by TopNotch Towing this year in city schools.

For the fifth year in a row, some very fortunate students in southeast Saskatchewan will once again have the opportunity to be mentored by some of Canada’s best athletes as they reach for their own dreams at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, Korea this February. Classroom Champions, an education and mentorship charity that pairs athletes as mentors with students across Canada and the U.S., has continued its partnership with Crescent Point Energy to position students for success. Crescent Point Energy’s continued support of the Classroom Champions will provide 16 schools in Saskatchewan and Alberta, as well as three schools in Colorado, with valuable mentorship opportunities from world class athletes. Nine-time World Cup para-snowboarding medalist Michelle Salt will work with students in Estevan, Regina and Weyburn, ranging from Grade 1 to Grade 7. Canadian Skeleton Champion Barrett Martineau will work with students in Carlyle and Radville, ranging from kindergarten to Grade 6. Each athlete will work alongside teachers in their respective communities to help students build skills such as perseverance, effective goal setting, positive leadership and embracing diversity. Kendra Gonczy, who teaches Grades 1 and 2 at Assiniboia Park Elementary School in Weyburn, worked with Michelle Salt during her first year with Classroom Champions, and this is her third year with the organization. “Students at our school often use the lessons they learned from Classroom Champions,” she said. “I see them lifting each other up in positive ways on the playground and supporting each other in any
way they can. They leave my class believing they can do anything they want, and I know they will always remember the words ‘dream big’ in whatever they do.” “Crescent Point’s community investment strategy focuses on three pillars, two of which are education and sports. The way in which Classroom Champions combines these two pillars has made them a natural fit for us from the start,” said Scott Saxberg, President and CEO, Crescent Point Energy. “We’ve seen the positive effect that Classroom Champions has had on the communities where we operate, as well as on the athletes that we sponsor. Like Crescent Point, Classroom Champions believes in enriching communities, and we are truly proud to have had a long-standing partnership with such an impactful organization.” Classroom Champions connects worldclass athletes volunteering as mentors with students through monthly video lessons, live video chats and in-class visits that build healthy relationships, encourage school engagement, foster strong classroom culture, boost self-esteem and show students that anything is possible. Since launching in 2009, Classroom Champions has established itself in more than 1,000 classrooms ranging from kindergarten to Grade 8 and has mentored more than 25,000 students across Canada and the U.S. “It’s truly inspiring to witness the impact our athletes continue to have on students and to see the strong relationships they develop with their athlete mentors,” said Steve Mesler, Olympic and World Champion as well as Co-Founder and CEO of Classroom Champions. “We are grateful for the support of Crescent Point and the company’s commitment to building mentorship opportunities for students in the coming years.”

Border Services urge shoppers to prepare
Congratulations to Bonnie Tytlandsvik
With the holiday season around the corner, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is reminding all cross-border and online shoppers of their responsibilities when importing goods to Canada.Canadians travelling south for Black Friday should be aware of the possibility for border lineups upon their return, and

should plan their crossing accordingly. Follow these top border tips: 1. Road trip? Be at the right place, at the right time. The CBSA recommends the North Portal port of entry for Saskatchewan-bound travellers because it is open 24-7 and has the greatest processing capacity during peak travel times. Travellers can also monitor border wait times for North Portal prior to arrival by downloading the CanBorder app. Bordersavvy travellers choose to cross in the morning, as weekend lineups tend to build during the afternoon and evening. 2. Know what you owe. There are no personal exemptions for same-day travellers, and your purchases will be subject to applicable duty and taxes. Travellers who have been out-of-country for at least 24 hours are entitled to a CAN$200 exemption, and this increases to CAN$800 once you have been away for 48 hours. Make sure to have the total of purchases added up, and all receipts readily available. 3. Be a smart online shopper. All international mail coming into Canada is subject to review by the CBSA, so order online gifts early to make sure they arrive in time for the holidays. Also be prepared to pay duty on items worth more than CAN$20. Travellers picking up parcels from the U.S. need to make sure they know the contents and value of each one. Open parcels before arriving at the border and bring an extra copy of the purchase invoice along.

Support local businesses during holiday season Sabrina Kraft news1@weyburnreview.com
T
he most important thing that communities must remember this upcoming holiday shopping season is to support their local businesses. It is these local businesses that are truly the heart of the community and it is important to celebrate what makes them special and unique. When you consider how many small businesses surround you in your everyday lives, it is impressive to think about the amount of time, commitment and labour these hard working individuals contribute to make their businesses both come to life and stay alive. Local business owners are more likely to give back to their community. Beyond actual dollars being kept within their local community, local business owners are also more likely to “do good” for their community, as well. There are many local businesses who volunteer for their community organizations, or find ways to support local teams or non-profit events. Locally owned businesses create communities that are more prosperous, entrepreneurial, connected, and generally better off for the future. It is very important to find ways to support local businesses and the first step is to spend money in these local stores. Another way to support local businesses is to help them hire employees that can truly help their business grow. Communities across the province struggle to keep their best and brightest youth from drifting to the big cities for brighter lights and better jobs. Of course,
moving away from ‘home’ is natural for many youth as they explore their options and find their path. There needs to be good options for those youth who do want to stay in their home communities. Even if the youth within that community want to leave to explore their options — there should be attractive options for other youth, who might want to consider relocating from a different community. Uncertainty continues to be the major challenge facing all businesses. In a tough economy, people tend to contract rather than expand, thinking that’s the prudent way to survive. It is important to continue to promote the things that make your business unique and special. If we only fight for a business when there is a fear of ‘closure’, then we are not properly supporting that business. Especially for many rural communities across our province, it is important to remember that there are positives to small-town life. Those small towns still need to have services to offer their residents. Someone is going to have to stand up for the smalltown way of life, and the advantages of rural living, and it has to come from that community itself. It has to be the leaders within that community who promote the advantages of rural life. One of the best solutions to rural economic development problems would be for local communities to focus on retaining people, especially creative, entrepreneurial types. Usually it is the creative people who are thinking outside the box, and can find ways to promote their communities and the businesses who operate within their community.

Motorists should be alert for deer Saskatchewan’s deer are on the move, and the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF) is appealing to motorists to be more alert while driving through areas that deer inhabit. Whitetail and mule deer around the province are in the middle of the rut, a six-week-long breeding season that peaks around the end of November, which means that more and more deer will be crossing the roadways. October, November and December account for the highest number of vehicular collisions with deer throughout the year. Deer/vehicle collisions can be both dangerous and costly (over $55 million in claims in 2016), including the potential for personal injury or fatality. Over 10,000 deer were killed in 2016 as well. The Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation, with continued support from SGI, is promoting a province-wide educational awareness campaign called “Go Slow and
Save a Little Doe”, with a focus on preventing vehicular collisions with animals, thereby reducing and eliminating personal injury or fatalities and saving our wildlife. Phase one was launched in June to coincide with increased summer highway traffic patterns and now, phase 2 is being launched to coincide with the rut. Here are some tips to keep in mind when driving in areas where wildlife inhabit: watch your speed; slowing down reduces the distance to stop; constantly scan the road from shoulder to shoulder; at night, watch for glowing eyes of animals and use high beams whenever possible; if you see an animal on the side of the road, slow down and pass by slowly; when one animal crosses the road, often others will follow; and if an animal appears suddenly, brake firmly and stay in control of your vehicle. Avoid swerving into oncoming traffic or the ditch. 17114SG0 17114SG1

Treasures of Home sale set for Saturday
The 15th annual Treasures of Home craft sale and trade show will be hosted in the Cugnet Centre and Colleen Weimer Hall on Saturday, November 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Treasures of Home was started in December 2002 with around 25 home-based businesses and crafters and was held at the former Elks Hall. Over the years the event has grown to now filling the Cugnet Centre and the Colleen Weimer Hall with approximately 55 vendors this year. The Christmas event also inspired the creation of annual spring and fall shows held at the Weyburn Curling Rink. This year saw another addition with the Fall Frenzy Used Clothing Sale that allowed vendors to sell their gently used clothing, shoes and accessories. “The community is amazing at supporting these events,” said Lisa Vick, organizer of the Treasures of Home craft sale and trade show. “I originally saw a need for events like these because there were not a lot of places

for me to promote my home business at the time besides my own home. I feel home-based business owners are a vital part of our community just as much as our brick and mortar shops. These home-based businesses add even more variety to the shopping experience in Weyburn and they in turn are supporting our local economy with spending their earnings within the city supporting our existing downtown businesses. We have many families that support events throughout the community by donating countless products and services to fundraisers of all kinds and sporting events year round.” The Treasures of Home craft sale and trade show is hosted by Weyburn Special Events. Admission to the craft sale and trade show is just $3 and lunch will be available. Santa Claus will be visiting from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m., residents can take their own photo for $5, or for $10 the Weyburn Association of Cheer Coaches volunteers will take your child’s photo and the image will be emailed to you. This organization was chosen as this year’s beneficiary as they recently relocated their facility and are in need of fundraising dollars to purchase equipment and to complete their facility. “Setting up these large events takes many hours and lots of heavy lifting. I have partnered with quite a few groups over the years to help me with set up and tear down, running the admission table as well as offering vendors help with loading and unloading of their products,” explained Vick. “In return for their assistance these groups receive a monetary donation which is used to offset fees or to purchases new equipment. It’s definitely a win-win situation.”

WEYBURN THIS WEEK - PAGE 9
Sportsman Den by Conservation Officer Lindsey Leko
Ministry of Environment conservation officer Lindsey Leko has spent more than 25 years as a conservation officer in Saskatchewan. For many years, Officer Leko contributed a column to local papers on a variety of issues related to hunting, fishing, and other resource-related issues. If you have questions, please contact lindsey.leko@gov.sk.ca.
One might think that police service dogs, or K9 units, only apply to police organizations and border services. Since 1994, Saskatchewan has included a K9 operator among its complement of field conservation officers. During that period, three separate handlers have worked with five different dogs. The trailblazer for the ministry’s K9 program was Inspector Daryl Minter and his dog, Scout. Their dedication and hard work set the foundation for future officers and service dogs to assist conservation officers in their duties. Since then, we have had police service dogs Zoro, Maverick, Keela, and now Jaks, with his handler Cpl. Jamie Chartrand stationed in Prince Albert. Jaks is a seven-yearold Belgian Malinois, which is a breed very similar to the German Shepherd. Malinois are used by many agencies as service dogs, as they are known for their high drive, strong work ethic and detection capabilities. Conservation officer service dogs are general-purpose service dogs as opposed to single-purpose dogs you would find at the border or an airport for example looking for food types, drugs or other items. All of our dogs are trained in detection, tracking, and apprehension. Jaks and his predecessors have been instrumental in many investigations, by assisting officers in locating physical evidence left or discarded by poachers. Jaks can search a large area the size of a football field, ten times faster than ten officers searching the same area, and most often locating evidence that may not have ever been found. In addition to finding physical evidence, the dogs assist in tracking wanted persons, such as those who have left the scene of a crime. Jaks is a very social dog; so if you are interested in a visit or presentation by our K9 team, simply contact your local conservation officer who may be able to help you out. In October, the Ministry of Environment launched a new mobile application called the Saskatchewan Cooperative Wildlife Management Survey (SK CWMS)
for Saskatchewan people to record wildlife observations. Species include moose, elk, deer and select upland game birds. These observations help the ministry manage wildlife populations and the decisions for draws and quotas. Up until recently, I was like my dad and not very technology savvy. I must confess that I am becoming quite skilled and no longer need my kids to show me how my apps work on my phone. It is quite a slick app once you get it set up. The app is available for download on your iPhone and Android devices from the Apple app store and Google Play. You can locate the app by searching for “Saskatchewan Wildlife Survey” or “SK CWMS”. Once you download the SK CWMS app, call 1-800567-4224 toll-free, for your participant number and activation code. Observations are encouraged throughout the year but each game species has a key period that is most important. These are: White-tailed deer and mule deer: September 1 to November 30; Moose: September 1 to December 31; Elk: September 1 to February 28; Sharp-tailed grouse: March 1 to July 15; and Wild Turkey: December 1 to March 1. So getting away from the public service announcements, I have to answer at least a couple of questions. Q: Under what circumstances can a First Nation individual hunt with a non-Aboriginal person? In Saskatchewan, it is unlawful for a non-Aboriginal person to aid, assist or hunt with a First Nation hunter who is exercising Treaty rights, unless the non-Aboriginal person is an immediate family member with a valid Treaty Assist Permit issued by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment. For a First Nation person and a non-Aboriginal individual who are not immediate family, to hunt together, both individuals must be in possession of a valid hunting licence appropriate for the purpose of the hunt, and follow all limits and laws that apply. If you have further questions, contact your local officer. Q: Porcupines and raccoons are causing damage to my yard. Are they legal to shoot? Porcupines and raccoons are two of a number of species classed as unprotected under The Wildlife Regulations. This means that a licence is not required to kill them and there is an open season. However, all safety regulations would still apply, such as no hunting at night, no hunting near occupied residences without permission or no hunting on posted land. Rural landowners have further authorities in that they can protect their property including livestock from damage caused by carnivores (with the exception of swift fox or black-footed ferret), beaver or muskrats.

Carnivores include all predator species, except raptors (owls, hawks or eagles). Common occurrences are weasels, mink or foxes killing chickens, or larger predators such as cougars, wolves or bears encroaching on yard sites or corrals. In these cases, landowners must immediately report any large predators they have killed to their local conservation officer. Conservation officers are a valuable source of information regarding nuisance wildlife occurrences and can often provide advice and non-lethal techniques, which can discourage animals from remaining near farmyards or limit the damage they may create. Problem wildlife in towns or cities are another matter and these issues may be discussed in a future article. Until next week…be sure of your target and beyond.

Trying to read a paper in APES musical
A hillbilly tried to figure out a newspaper report about himself while an actress and producer from Hollywood watched, in a scene from the musical play, “Fussin’ an’-a-Feudin’”, performed by students of Assiniboia Park School. The musical will be performed twice, on Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 27 and 28, at the T.C. Douglas Centre, starting at 7 p.m. on both evenings. The musical shows what happens to two feuding families when Hollywood producers come around to produce a movie in their locale.

Support your local merchants With Christmas fast approaching, our purchases are multiplying rapidly. Whether it’s for food, clothing or gifts, we always have a long list of stores to visit. To better support our communities, it’s important we try to buy what we need for Christmas from local merchants. Today, with the proliferation of huge shopping complexes surrounding large urban centres, many of us have developed a taste for exploring further afield. In the end, we buy the same products elsewhere... We spend money on gas with the hope of saving a few cents on our purchases. However, if we thought about it we would understand that the savings realized are practically non-existent and that they endanger the very survival of local businesses. The alternative to this shopping habit is to buy local... A great way of saving both money and time! Help your community flourish
