Effectively immediately the following groups who have received two doses of a Health Canada-approved COVID-19 vaccine are eligible to receive their COVID-19 booster dose five months following their second dose: • Individuals aged 50 years and older; • All health care workers; • Individuals born in 2009 or earlier with underlying health conditions that are clinically extremely vulnerable, including those with diabetes; Additional age groups will be added, with the target of making boosters available to all Saskatchewan residents 18 years and older early in 2022. Why get a booster dose? If you have received two doses of the two dose vaccines (Pfizer BionTech, AstraZeneca, Moderna) or one dose of the single dose vaccine (Janssen), you are considered fully vaccinated 14 days after receiving your last dose. However, it has been observed that individuals may experience waning immunity due to factors like age or underlying conditions that impact

the body’s ability to mount a strong immune response to the vaccines. Fully vaccinated individuals are also at-risk of potential breakthrough infections based on the rate of community transmission. Containing both the Government of Saskatchewan and Government of Canada visual identity wordmarks, your MySaskHealthRecord digital QR code proof of vaccina-

tion certificate supports proof of vaccination at border entry during international travel. The COVID-19 proof of vaccination with QR code can also be uploaded to the SK Vax Wallet app. Available in both the Apple and Google Play store, the SK Vax Wallet app has been updated to display the full vaccination certificate with the Saskatchewan and Canada identifiers to support international travel.

Age eligibility expanded for booster shots

The Government of Saskatchewan is expanding access to fentanyl and benzodiazepine drug checking strips, to help curb the number of overdose deaths in the province. These test strips are now available to the general public for the purpose of at-home drug checking. Fentanyl is 50 to 100 times more toxic than other opioids. Of 149 confirmed accidental drug toxicity deaths in Saskatchewan in 2021, 108 (72 per cent) involved fentanyl. People who use drugs often do not know if fentanyl is present. It cannot be seen, smelled or tasted. Mixing benzodiazepines (benzos) with opioids increases the risk of overdose, because they both have sedative properties. As well, naloxone, which normally reverses the effects of an opioid overdose, is not effective in counteracting benzos. “The tragedy of overdose and toxic street drug deaths continue to be a heavy burden on our communities,” Mental Health

and Addictions Minister Everett Hindley said. Take home test strips are now available at over 30 locations across the province. To find the closest location for pick-up, the public can visit saskatchewan.ca/overdose. “We are grateful anytime we see the adoption of evidence based harm reduction measures on a large scale,” Provincial Lead of Mom’s Stop the Harm Canada Marie Agioritis said. “It gives me hope that someone else’s mother could be spared the pain of burying a child. These test strips will save lives. Let’s get them into the hands of people who need them.” A negative result on a test strip does not guarantee the substance is safe. Test strips only check if certain fentanyl or benzos compounds are present in the portion of the drugs tested. They do not detect other drugs and do not show the amount of fentanyl or benzos present in the substance. These strips are an additional tool to limit potential overdoses.
