STF declares impasse in contract talks, to vote on sanctions The Teachers’ Bargaining Committee has declared an impasse in negotiations with the Government-Trustee Bargaining Committee and will be filing for conciliation. Teachers will hold a vote on sanctions on October 24 and 25. “The government is leaving us no other option. We’ve met nine times and there has been no significant movement on issues that are important to teachers, students and families,” said Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation President Samantha Becotte. “ We a lwa y s wa n t to reach an agreement through negotiations. And we will return to the table, day or night, any time the government is prepared to actually negotiate. But as it stands today, this is pointless.” Teachers are seeking a new agreement that ad-

dresses the most pressing issues in education, and to address the serious challenges that students, families and teachers are facing – including class size and composition and lack of supports for students. Data shows that while enrolment is up, there are fewer teachers and other professional supports. The government has refused to bargain on nine out of 10 teacher proposals. “The Premier and his education minister have made a political choice to cut education funding and leave salary increases well below the rate of inflation for almost a decade. Instead, they are focusing all their attention on divisive wedge issues,” Becotte stated. “The lack of accountability and callous approach is abhorrent. Saskatchewan families deserve a government that works for them.”

Holy Family school division sees ‘healthy growth’ with 2.37% increase in enrolment The schools in the Holy Family Roman Catholic Separate School Division saw an overall increase of 2.37 per cent in enrolment, as of the Sept. 30 cutoff date for the Ministry of Education. “That’s pretty healthy growth for us, with 32 more kids than we had last year,” said Chad Fingler, supertintendent of schools, in presenting the numbers

to the board of trustees on Wednesday evening. He added they had projected a decline rather an increase, so this was a good surprise for the schools to see. The numbers are up 5.19 per cent from what had been projected. The school division as a whole grew from 1,317 to 1,349 as of Sept. 30, an increase of 2.37 per cent. There were 1,344 students

enrolled as of Sept. 1, but the official count is not taken until Sept. 30. Going school by school, St. Michael School in Weyburn saw the enrolment go from 502 on Sept. 30 a year ago to 517 this year, a three-per-cent increase. St. Olivier in Radville declined, going from 109 a year ago to 94 this year, a 16 per cent decrease. Sacred Heart School

went from 350 a year ago to 362 this year, a threeper-cent increase, while St. Mary’s went up from 273 last year to 290 this year, a six-per-cent increase. St. Augustine in Wilcox had 56 a year ago, and grew to 59 this year, a five-percent increase. The number of homeschooled children under Holy Family stayed the same at 27 students.

Weyburn Minor Football finishes regular season

The Weyburn U14 Falcons defeated the Estevan Oilers 27-22 in the last regular season game Friday night. The team had difficulties at times but worked hard and pushed through to secure the win. The offensive game ball went to Hudson Maloney and the defensive game ball went to Lincoln Lillejord. The Falcons will host the Moose Jaw Raiders on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 4 p.m. for the league semi-final. The Ravens had their last regular season game Saturday when the Moose Jaw Bulldogs came to town. The Ravens were hungry for a win and although they played some excellent football they ultimately fell short 22-12. Offensive game ball went to the entire O-line. Logan Payak ran the ball for a total of 95 yards con-

tributing one TD. Landon Leroux also ran the ball for a total of 66 yards with a 35-yard run TD. The offensive line made some big blocks and played a great game of ball. Defensive game ball went to Harrison Peterson. Harrison had two fumble recoveries at key moments, turning the field back over to the offence. Preston Walter led the way with over 10 tackles, a QB sack and one fumble recovery turned into a run for 39 yards for the Ravens. Hudson Lawrence also had a QB sack and the entire D-Line was notable with excellent tackles all over the place. The Ravens now head to their first playoff game against the Estevan Chargers this weekend, competing for the Band City Autobowl. The game date and time had not yet been set as of Monday evening.
