WCS Eagles volleyball teams win gold, bronze at tournaments
The WCS Eagles Senior Girls volleyball team played in Balgonie over the weekend at the Greenall Invitational Volleyball Tournament. The Eagles finished the pool play with two wins over Yorkton and Kipling and a loss to Balgonie, moving them into second place to play. The Eagles advanced into playoffs to play the third place team from the other pool in the quarter final. The Eagles won over Fort Qu’Appelle 25-18 and 25 –20. The Eagles then came up against a strong team from Campbell Collegiate from Regina. The Eagles lost 25-27 and 16-25 in the semifinal to move to the third place final. Facing Yorkton, the Eagles came away with the win by scores of 26-24 and 25-18 to bring home the bronze medal. The WCS Senior Boys Volleyball team travelled to Saskatoon over the weekend for the Centennial Collegiate tournament. On Friday, they played Holy Cross in their first game and lost in two straight, 19-25 and 25-27. In their second game they
played Evan Hardy and beat them 25-15 and 25-14. On Saturday morning they started their day playing against Centennial and beat them in three games, 25-22, 23-25, and 15-12. In their last round robin game on Saturday, they played St. Joseph and lost 20-25 and 21-25. In the semi-final on the consolation side, they beat Bellevue in three games, winning 25-16, losing 23-25, and winning 15-8, advancing them to the consolation gold medal against Centennial, who they beat in two straight to capture gold. Their next action will be on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 3 and 4, when they head to Yorkton. The WCS Junior A Girls played in a tournament in Carnduff over the weekend, and finished the first round robin in second place with a record of four wins and two losses, which sent them to the Championship Pool. After the Championship Pool round robin, the girls ended up facing Arcola in an exciting final where the girls ended up winning both sets 25-21 and 25-19 to win gold.
The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings hosted the Battlefords North Stars for two games two days apart, with the home team doubling the

The Weyburn Comp Eagles Jr. A girls volleyball team was all smiles after winning the gold medal in a tournament held in Carnduff. Weyburn Red Wings split games with Battlefords North Stars erra Division of the SJHL, with seven wins, four losses and three shoot-outs on their record. The game on Thursday was also KidSport night
for the Red Wings, and a presentation was made to Weyburn KidSport based on the number of goals the Red Wings scored last season, a cheque for
$2,813. A volunteer award from KidSport was also presented prior to puck drop, to Roger Sydorko. The scoring was spread across the lineup, with Jaxson Ruthven, Lucas Schmid and Nicholas Kovacs each scoring twice, and Blake Betson, Jerome Maharaj, Carter Briltz and Elijah Anderson each scoring once. The first period saw the Red Wings take a 3-1 lead, and they extended it to 6-4 by the end of the second period. Weyburn scored four times on seven power plays, while the North Stars scored twice on five power plays. Dazza Mitchell was in net for the full game, making 29 saves on 34 shots. It was a different story on Saturday evening, as the Red Wings only scored twice on the night,
with Ruthven getting the team on the scoreboard first, assisted by Max Monette. The North Stars scored five times before Betson was able to score in the third period for the Red Wings on the power play, assisted by Ruthven and Kovacs. Eric Kahl was in net for this game, and stopped 29 shots out of 37 attempts on goal. He had been pulled briefly in the third period, but the North Stars scored on the empty net. The Red Wings are now on a break in their schedule, and won’t play again until they visit Kindersley on Wednesday, Nov. 8, and then pay the North Stars a visit for two games on Nov. 10 and 11. After a game in Flin Flon on Nov. 13, they will next have a home game on Thursday, Nov. 16 when they host the North Stars.

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Gold Wings visited Regina for a pair of games against the Rebels last week, losing 7-0 on Thursday night and 4-2 on Friday night. In Friday’s game, the Rebels scored twice in the first period and twice more in the second period, before the Gold Wings scored two goals on the power play. Maicy Groenewegen scored from Jade Olszewski and Addison Longmore, and one minute later, Kiah Shields scored, with assists to Kaitlyn Mah and
Hadley Revenko. There was no scoring in the third period. Amy Swayze was in net for the full game, making 56 saves on 60 shots on goal. For Thursday’s game, Hailey Sibbald was the goaltender for the full game, making 31 saves on 38 shots. The Gold Wings will host the Notre Dame Hounds tonight, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. at Crescent Point Place, and will next play on Saturday, Nov. 11, when they host the Battlefords Sharks at 7 p.m.
