Pride Week to include something for everyone
Pride Week in Weyburn will be celebrated from June 16 to 22.
Shyla Brealt, of the Weyburn Pride Committee noted that they have been planning events since the spring.
“We decided to come together and create a whole Pride Committee that will be planning events throughout the year. We have a group of people that planned a different event for each day of Pride Week.”
“Our mission, for this first year at least, is to bring awareness to the community. We want to educate the public and also just really emphasize that we’re a safe space for any youth or adults that feel like they need that support.”
Pride Week events in Weyburn will begin with crosswalk painting on Third Street and Souris Avenue on June 16.
The Weyburn Arts Council also requested a Pride Flag rising outside City Hall on June 17 at 12 noon, and that was approved by city council at their recent meeting. Later that same evening, a gallery mixer and author reading will be held at the Weyburn Art Gallery.
“Victoria (the author) is actually part of the committee with us, so we’re very honoured to have her read one of her books,” said Brealt. “I don’t think she’s actually letting out which one she’s going to be reading for us yet. I think she might do a little bit of a snippet of a couple for us.”
A ‘Love is Love’ sign painting session will be held at Collabartive Art Studio on June 18, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
“There’s no cost because that’s being covered by Weyburn Arts Council. Actually, there’s no cost to the public to attend any of the events,” said Brealt.
The Weyburn Public Library will host a ‘rainbow cupcakes’ program on June 19, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Residents are encouraged to register for this event by calling the Weyburn Library.
Crocus 80 Theatre will host karaoke and games at the Tommy Douglas Centre on Thursday, June 20 from 7 to 9 p.m.
“They are really helping us out a lot with that one, and members of our community will be there to support them.”
Pride Week wraps up with a ‘Pride Snow Cones’ will be available at Meok Ja on June 21.
A family barbecue and games will be held at River Park on June 22, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., to wrap up the celebrations.
Nationally, June is Pride Month, when the world’s 2SLGBTQI+ communities and allies come together and celebrate the freedom to be themselves. Pride gatherings are rooted in the arduous history of minority groups who have struggled for decades to overcome prejudice and be accepted for who they are. Pride Week is one way to show respect for these minorities.

WCS to celebrate 2024 graduates
By Sabrina KraftGrad is just around the corner for the Weyburn Comprehensive School.
An update of plans for the 2024 graduating class was recently provided during a parent and student meeting.
WCS Grade 12 students Camryn Greve and Nia Cleasby had the opportunity to share their excitement about the grad plans. “I am looking forward to the grand march, so I can show off my dress,” laughed Cleasby.
“I am looking forward to spending time with my friends that day, and all the people that I have grown up with,” said
Greve.
“It is getting closer and closer to that time, so everyone who is making speeches are practicing them, and we are all getting excited.”
The Weyburn Comprehensive School will host their graduating ceremonies and parade on Saturday, June 15.
Grad day starts with the ceremonies at 10:30 a.m. There will be reserved seating for parents and guardians, with rush seating for the rest of the public who wants to attend.
This year, because of the large size of the graduating class, the cere -
monies and grand march will be hosted at Crescent Point Place.
The parade will start at 2:30 p.m. There will also be an altered route for the grad parade, so it will not conflict with the Show and Shine that will be held in downtown Weyburn.
The grad gala and grand march will be held after the parade, and a Safe Grad event has been arranged for the evening. Parents and graduates can stay informed on all grad updates by joining the WCSgrad2024 Facebook page.
“We are looking for volunteers to help with set-up and tear down,” said Cleasby. There is
also a need for volunteer drivers for the parade. Many different fundraising activities have been held, so that special graduating memorabilia could be purchased for the graduates. There was an online auction on Facebook, and there is a Drop-and-Go code at SARCAN for those residents who want to donate recycling.
A bottle drive will be held on June 2, as another collection period. Anyone who has recycling they want to donate can message the WCS grad representatives on their WCSgrad2024 Facebook group.

Lights to be upgraded at Gov. Rd. and First Ave.
The City of Weyburn started construction on June 10, to upgrade the traffic lights at the intersection of Government Road (Highway 13) and First Avenue (Highway 35).
During the construction period, the intersection will function as a four-way stop. Lane restrictions will be in place as crews work in the right-hand turning lanes.

EDITORIAL
FATHER KNOWS BEST
Sherri Solomko / Freelance Reporter
They say the best sermon you could give is setting by example in the live you live. Don’t google the how-to’s and what-for’s, just ask your dad or watch how he does it.
As a recipient of several volunteer awards over my lifetime I acknowledge that these didn’t come without the examples set by my parents. Dad was an active Kinsmen and K-40 member most of his life and he took us kids along to every work party demonstrating that if you wanted your community or your province to be a better place, than roll up your sleeves and pitch in.
Look around at kid’s sporting activities and there you will find dads coaching, practising with their kids before or after a game or helping their kids on the ice, the soccer fields or the diamonds.
My dad wasn’t all work and no play because he also demonstrated that volunteering and work parties could also be fun as there was often a food or refreshment component to said activity. This is a message I continually pass on to new volunteers, that it isn’t always all work as there is plenty of fun to be had.
While I refer to my dad in all of these recollections, I am pretty certain that you can relate to one or more of these same qualities when recounting lessons learned and memories made with your own dad.
My dad knows how to enjoy life and help others enjoy theirs because he is always singing or whistling or entertaining. Or he is cooking as my dad is the brunch master and he has orchestrated and cooked for thousands of pancake or waffle breakfasts for church, community events and family activity. And, I promise you, he whistles while he works.
We count on our dads for advice, guidance, a helping hand or to come to our house just because the grandkids or great grandkids asked him to.
My dad has a teasing sense of humor and it helped sustain us, even in the toughest of times. Being a die-hard Dodge man, he loves to catch unsuspecting new members of the family stating that Chevs are equipped with heated end gates and bumpers and when quizzed about it his jovial response is “easier to keep your hands warm when you’re

always pushing it”.
Come on, dad’s invented dad jokes and we all know dads that can crack the best of these jovial quips and sayings.
My dad created multiple adventures in childhood that created memories to last a life time, while heavily supported in planning, preparation, packing and food prep by my mom. With dad, we experienced the responsibility of our first horse and a new family dog. We enjoyed many memorable camping trips in a truck camper fitted on a Dodge Club Cab for our summer B.C. excursions. My dad surprised us with our first skidoo and after firm instructions, gave us the freedom to ride it. We enjoyed the opportunity to ride in a sleigh or wagon behind the team of horses he trained. Our friends were always welcome at our house.
Whether any of these adventures can describe your own dad, a father like figure in your life or a neighborhood dad, dad’s set the table for examples when you become a dad yourself or when you are the mom supporting the dad’s ventures in your family’s life.
For my dad, but I know this speaks for many dads I know, they teach us to love and respect each other; to be involved in your community; to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem; to do what you love and love what you do.
Our dad maintained we should always smile and chat with a stranger because you never know what you might learn, if nothing more than showing Saskatchewan kindness and friendliness.
Dad continues to showcase how to never grow old. At one of the many birthday party events held for his 85th birthday he was asked, “Does he feel old at 85?” His quick response, “Not a chance, I quit feeling old and counting my age after 55 because you’re only as old as you feel.” This comes from a man who still gets on the floor with 13 great grandkids to make forts or have a dance party, he still curls twice a week and in a bonspiel with our son, he still attends regular dances with their senior’s group, he doesn’t miss a ball game of our daughter’s and I can tell you he has a social calendar that you almost have to book into.
Just remember, this Father’s Day, what your dad really wants is a nap. Or in the case of my dad, let him just rest his eyes.
By Stan PopovichIf you or someone you love is struggling with their mental health, the first thing you need to do is to seek help from a qualified mental health professional.
I dealt with fear and anxiety for over 20 years and I talked with many mental health counselors to help get my life back on track. As I struggled throughout my life, there were some things that I learned during my mental health struggles that may help somebody you may know.
As a result, here are 16 important mental health facts that every person should know:
· Getting help for your mental health problems is the best thing you can do.
· You can’t run away from your mental health issues.
· Your situation is not hopeless regardless what you may think.
· There is no such thing as a quick fix when it comes to your mental health.
· Focus on your recovery rather than trying to please others.
· Go to the nearest hospital if you are experiencing a mental health crisis.
· Your mental health is just as important
as your physical health.
· You must make an effort in finding the answers to your mental health issues.
· Focus on the facts of your situation rather than your fearful thoughts.
· Joining a support group is a great way of finding people who can relate to you.
· Follow the advice from the professionals rather than your friends.
· Do not try to manage your mental health problems all by yourself.
· Determine the source of your anxieties and then find ways to overcome it.
· Do not make assumptions regarding your current mental health situation.
· Do not underestimate the power of God when it comes to your mental health.
· Learning from your past mental health experiences will help you in the present.
In addition to talking to a mental health counselor regarding your mental health issues, there is another thing that you can do to increase your chances of getting your life back on track just as I did.
Talk to somebody who has struggled with their mental health on a personal level

SaskDLC to offer oil and gas online courses
The Saskatchewan Distance Learning Centre (Sask DLC) is entering into an agreement with Teine Energy to develop new Oil and Gas high school courses.
Through this new partnership, students will learn about the importance of the oil and gas industry, and gain knowledge about career opportunities available in Saskatchewan’s energy industry, while local companies will receive support in building a future workforce to meet consumer demands.
“This partnership is
a great example of innovation that will support our province’s growing economy while providing students the chance to explore the wealth of career opportunities available to them right here at home,”
Premier Scott Moe said.
“These new courses will include work placement opportunities for students and will foster the development of a skilled workforce for our province.”
Through the agreement, Teine Energy will collaborate with educators at Sask DLC to develop new online oil and gas 20 and 30
courses. In each course, students will take 50 hours of online theory and 50 hours of work placement, giving them hands-on learning experiences while they explore potential career paths.
Teine Energy is providing a total of $150,000 over two years to support both the development of the new online courses and the coordination of student work placements. Teine Energy is a Canadian company dedicated to meeting the demand for domestically produced, environmentally responsible energy.
Student Aid Applications open for Post Secondary Students
The 2024-25 Saskatchewan Student Aid applications are now available for students pursuing post-secondary education this fall.
This year, the province is celebrating 75 years of providing financial support to students. Since its inception, the Student Aid Fund has provided over $2.2 billion in financial assistance to post-secondary students.
“The Student Aid Fund makes it easier for students to access post-secondary education and lay a foundation for a promising and productive future,” said Advanced Education Minster Colleen Young.
The 2024-25 budget provides more than $46 million for student loans, grants and scholarships. More than 22,000 eligible students are expected to benefit from non-repayable and repayable financial assistance this year.
Post-secondary student sitting in a classroom, smiling. “Saskatchewan Student Aid. 2024-25 Saskatchewan Student Loan and Grant Applications Now Open.”
This year, the Government of Saskatchewan is further increasing access to student supports by investing $4.2 million in the newly established Saskatchewan Student Grant for Students with dependants. This grant will provide
eligible full-time students with up to $950 in additional funding per dependant annually, if they have dependants under 12, or over 12 with a permanent disability. Saskatchewan students will automatically be assessed for the new grant when they submit their application.
Students interested in taking advantage of Saskatchewan Student Aid can fill out an online application to be assessed for a mix of provincial and federal grants and loans. They can

also apply for a number of other student aid programs including scholarships, bursaries, disability grants and student loan forgiveness.
Post-secondary graduates who live and work in Saskatchewan can also benefit from the Graduate Retention Program, which provides up to $20,000 in tax credits, as well as a number of financial incentive programs for high-demand occupations.

Teine is very active with Saskatchewan communities and is the lead sponsor of the upcoming Saskatchewan Summer Games. Teine has operations in southwest Saskatchewan, near Kindersley and Lloydminster.
“Teine is excited to be part of shaping and supporting the careers of talented young people in the province of Saskatchewan,” said Teine Energy president and CEO Jason Denney. “This program connects the energy industry with high school students as they begin to
make career choices. Our goal for this program is to deliver real world experience, accelerate local energy focused employment, and ultimately enable Saskatchewan grads to pursue well paid, fulfilling careers within their home province.”
There is availability for additional oil and gas companies in the province to sign on to this agreement and provide further work placement opportunities for students throughout the province.
Oil and Gas 20 will be available to students start-
ing in the second semester of the 2024-25 school year, followed by Oil and Gas 30 starting in the 2025-26 school year. These courses will be available to fulltime online students, as well as high school students attending local schools throughout the province to supplement their in-person learning. Sask DLC registration for the next school year is now open. These new oil and gas courses will add to the other online trade and agriculture courses that students currently have access to through Sask DLC.

The War Amps: A legacy of support and empowerment
Dean LaBerge Local Journalism Initiative ReporterBeginning in 1918 with the establishment of the Amputation Club of British Columbia, multiple groups of war veteran amputees began to organize across Canada in response to the pressing needs of veterans who had lost limbs during the First World War.
These veterans faced significant challenges in adjusting to life after the war, dealing with physical, emotional, and financial hardships. Initially established to assist war amputees in reintegrating into civilian life, these groups and associations would eventually join together to become The War Amps, a vital organization in Canada dedicated to providing support and advocacy for amputees.
As the years passed and the organization expanded, it continued to support veterans of World War II and subsequent conflicts. In the 1960s, The War Amps broadened its mission to include all amputees, not just veterans. This shift led to the creation of programs like the Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, which provides financial assistance for artificial limbs and peer support for child amputees and their families.
Today, The War Amps is renowned for its comprehensive programs that support amputees of all ages. Key programs include:
• Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program: This flagship program provides funding for artificial limbs, recreational limbs and devices, peer support, and advocacy for child amputees and their families. CHAMP also hosts regional seminars where families can connect and share experiences.
• PLAYSAFE Program: educates children about the dangers of situations that could lead to amputation. Taking a kids-to-kids approach, ambassadors from the CHAMP program give presentations and appear in videos and public service announcements to promote safety awareness among children.
• Adult Amputee Program: This program offers resources and support for adult amputees, including financial assistance for artificial limbs and adaptive devices, information on living with amputation, and advocacy for accessibility and rights.
• Matching Mothers: This peer support network connects new parents of
amputee children with experienced parents who can provide guidance and support. The War Amps relies on public support to continue its vital work. Canadians can contribute in several ways:
• Key Tag Service: Since 1946, The War Amps has provided a key tag service that helps return lost keys to their owners. Donations to this service fund many of the organization’s programs.
• Donations: Financial contributions can be made directly to The War Amps through their website or by mail. These donations help fund the CHAMP and PLAYSAFE Program, and other essential services.
• Legacy Giving: Indi -
viduals can include The War Amps in their estate planning, ensuring their legacy supports the organization’s work for future generations.
• Volunteer: Individuals can volunteer their time and skills to support various activities and programs, including educational initiatives and fundraising events.
The War Amps continues to make a significant impact on the lives of amputees across Canada. By providing practical assistance and emotional support and advocating for the rights of amputees, the organization empowers individuals to lead fulfilling lives despite their challenges.
The War Amps aims to create a world where all
amputees can thrive and achieve their full potential. With continued public support and dedicated efforts, the organization strives to ensure that no amputee in Canada feels alone or unsupported. SaskTel reaches halfway mark of 5G
SaskTel announced that it recently reached another major milestone on the deployment of its advanced 5G wireless network.
Since first launching its 5G network in parts of Regina in late 2021, SaskTel has successfully upgraded half of its provincial wireless network to 5G technology. As of today, SaskTel’s 5G network consists of more than 520 cell sites and covers nearly 85 per cent of Saskatchewan residents.
“Our government is thrilled with the progress SaskTel has made in bringing the amazing speed and power of its 5G network to the people of Saskatchewan,” said Dustin Duncan, Minister Responsible for SaskTel. “For individuals and families, the rollout of SaskTel’s 5G network

means enhanced connectivity and greater access to important services and opportunities. For businesses, 5G is a gateway to innovation, enabling more efficient operations, increased productivity, and new opportunities for growth.”
“This milestone marks a significant step forward in our ambitious deployment of 5G and further demonstrates our unwavering commitment to being the best at connecting our customers to what matters most to them,” said Charlene Gavel, SaskTel President and CEO. “While we are excited with our progress so far, we recognize this is just one of many milestones in our ongoing journey to build a brighter and more connected future for our customers and
province as a whole.”
“The continued expansion of SaskTel’s 5G network is another pivotal step toward empowering more communities across the province, driving digital transformation, and paving the way for a future where connectivity fuels progress,” said Stephen Wiktorski, Head of Networks, Samsung Canada. “Samsung is proud to stand by SaskTel on this journey and we look forward to further supporting the growth of the network, prosperity, and innovation throughout Saskatchewan.”
Delivering hyper-fast data speeds reaching up to 1.2 Gigabits per second (Gbps), SaskTel’s 5G network will continue to evolve to meet the growing needs of customers. Moreover, as the network
continues to mature it will support technological advancements in remote healthcare, education, agriculture, resource management, and many other industries and sectors that are important to the economic prosperity and standard of living across Saskatchewan.
The continued expansion of its 5G and fibre networks are a direct result of SaskTel’s commitment to invest nearly $440 million of capital throughout Saskatchewan in 2024/25 and more than $2 billion over the next five years. These investments will ensure Saskatchewan remains one of the most well-connected provinces in the country..
