Neil Roszell named Saskatchewan Oilman of the Year Neil Roszell, P.Eng., President and CEO of Raging River Exploration Inc, was named Saskatchewan Oilman of the Year at the 19th Annual Saskatchewan Oil and Gas Show in Weyburn on June 3. Every two years since 1989, the board has recognized individuals who have made significant contributions to the petroleum industr y in Saskatchewan and beyond. The Saskatchewan Oilman of the Year recognizes an individual or team currently working in the Saskatchewan oil and gas sector that is making a significant contribution to the growth and success of the industry in the province. Through the technological advances he has brought to developing the Viking oil play, Neil has shown the spirit of innovation that has always been at the heart of the Saskatchewan oil and gas industry. His work in Kindersley and other areas has redefined the direction of the industr y, and will continue to have an impact on the province for years to come. A l s o honoured at the awards luncheon were the inductees of the

ArtFarm III - only a week away

Max Himsl, Super Special Dee and Rickee-Lee Webster horsing around (collecting inspiration?) for ArtFarm III. - Photo courtesy of Tina Hudson

Submitted - Both of this week's featured artists express themselves by creating portraits. Rickee-Lee Webster is a painter with a verve for clarity and detail and Max Himsl is a sculptor with an eye for photorealism. Rickee-Lee Webster, as you may guess from her outlandish name, is a political refugee who fled from the despotic Alberta regime of the late King Ralph. RickeeLee's first portraits are from this repressive period as she recorded the images of so

many friends and family that disappeared into the gulag tar-mines of Fort MacMurray. In fear and hope the family made a harrowing late night escape across the prairie in an overloaded SUV, feeling safe from pursuit only after reaching the free city of Weyburn. Rickee-Lee describes the liberation she felt here in her thick, nearly incomprehensible Calgary accent, accompanied by expressive hand gestures. Her husband Jeremy, a native

15061SMF01

Saskatchewitchian, translates as required. "Here" she says, arms waving, "people are so strange, so different, I want to capture them. The strange faces, the foreign atmosphere here is very attractive to me." By contrast, Max Himsl makes his portraits in three dimensions but he too likes to use his friends as subject matter for is compositions. "A lot of people ask me if my medications are up to date but no, no, I'm mister natural," says Max "so naturally I

have interesting friends. I like to go camping, pick wild mushrooms and herbs for stew and tea and usually after supper all my friends arrive. Fudo-doo-(whistle)twip usually arrives first in his spaceship and then Minoona the Pentaped Ballerinna and all the others. I just recreate them from wood and metal intead of taking a picture 'cause it's so much easier." Max will enjoy Art Farm 3 with a special escorted day pass. Please do not feed him meat as it makes him behave unpredictably. Art Farm 3 - this crap will look good on your wall. ArtFarm June 13, 2015, 1-8pm Admission - a toonie, 6 and under free! South on highway 35, west on TWP080 south at white barn. Van rides will be available every hour from the mall. Seeding nearly complete Producers now have 87 per cent of the crop seeded, well ahead of the five-year (2010-2014) average for this time of year (61 per cent), according to Saskatchewan Agriculture's Weekly Crop Report. Dry weather has allowed many producers to finish seeding while others will need another week or more. The southwestern and west-central regions are nearing completion with 93 per cent of the crop in the ground. The northwestern region has 89 per cent seeded; the southeastern has 87 per cent seeded; the eastcentral region has 83 per cent seeded; and the northeastern region has 75 per cent seeded. Little to no rain was received this week, with some areas in the northeastern region reporting 2 mm. Topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as four per cent surplus, 58 per cent adequate, 30 per cent short and eight per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as four per cent surplus, 49 per cent adequate, 35 per cent short and 12 per cent very short. The majority of emerged crops are either at or are behind their normal developmental stages for this time of year. They are in relatively good condition with most crop damage being caused by flea beetles, cutworms and lack of moisture. Despite heavy frost in many areas early last week, most crops were not damaged; however, there has been some re-seeding of oilseed crops. Pasture conditions are rated as four per cent excellent, 44 per cent good, 32 per cent fair, 14 per cent poor and six per cent very poor.

Police remind residents to exercise caution in construction areas On May 31, the Weyburn Police Service received a call regarding a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, they located a 22 year-old male and a 21 year-old female involved in a verbal altercation. After mediating the matter, the male voluntarily left with police for the night. On May 30, the Weyburn PS received a report regarding a number of youth seen hauling branches to an area near the spillway along the river. Upon investigation, they were found to have a small party with a small bonfire going. The fire was extinguished and the people cautioned about their actions. On May 29, the Weyburn PS responded to a report of a theft of property from the City Centre Mall lot. After some investigation the 21 year-old male was identified and located. The property

taken was believed by the male to have been garbage. The property was returned to the owner and the matter concluded. Also on May 29, the Weyburn PS responded to a report of a domestic dispute in progress. Upon arrival, police found a 28 yearold male and a 23 year-old female arguing over the stresses of financial matters. Police were able to mediate the dispute for the night. Further on May 29, the Weyburn PS responded to a report of a male having been assaulted. While still under investigation it appears that a 23 year-old male was walking with friends when approached by a 17 year-old male who punched the older person. This resulted in the older person requiring medical attention. On May 28, while on patrol, the Weyburn Police Ser-

vice conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle found to be driving in an odd manner. As a result of the stop a 23 yearold male from Biggar was arrested and has been charged with driving over .08. On May 27, the Weyburn PS were dispatched to a report of a family member causing trouble in a residence. Upon police arrival, it was learned that there were numerous ongoing family issues. The police were able to mediate the issues for the moment and the 27 year-old male left willingly with police. Also on May 27, the Weyburn PS received a report of a strong odor of marihuana coming from an apartment. Upon investigation, it was learned that a 32 year-old male had been smoking marihuana in his own home. At the time Police dealt with the individual,

there was no evidence to support charges. We wish to remind anyone so inclined that even within the privacy of your own residence, it is illegal to possess marihuana. Further on May 27, the Weyburn PS received a report of a possible animal abuse matter. While the initial complaint did not bear out to be as serious as initially thought, the matter is still under investigation. On May 25, the Weyburn PS has received complaints regarding the safety of children and youth in and around the construction area along Confederation Drive. While safety is paramount, it is important that parents express their concern to their children about playing in this area. As this area is privately owned, it may

New executive for Weyburn WF Price Match ee Guarant

also be considered mischief or trespassing if found in and around the property. Also on May 25, at about 8:50 p.m., the Weyburn PS were dispatched to a report of an intoxicated man walking down the street. When approached by the police, the man became very belligerent and was arrested for being drunk in public. While attempting to make the arrest the man struck one officer. As a result, a physical altercation ensued before the man was taken into custody. A 48 year-old Weyburn man has been charged with assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest. He was held in custody and later released before a Justice of the Peace. He will be making a court appearance. No injuries

were sustained by the officer or the accused. Further on May 25, the Weyburn PS received a complaint regarding a very aggressive door-to-door salesman. While this matter is still being investigated, we wish to remind everyone that you have the right to demand to see both a City and Provincial license before dealing with any such person and you do have a right to deny them entry into your home and to call the police if you feel threatened. The Weyburn PS also received numerous loud party complaints over the week. Please keep in mind that the Noise Bylaw covers off unwanted noise at any time of the day or night with emphasis on that which happens after 11:00 p.m.

Give me a break

Do you qualify for the list?

By Helen Waller Spring is in the air, the farmers are working in their fields and the kids are playing on theirs. Everyone is busy, busy, busy and if you are a mom (who happens to be married to a farmer) that means you are really BUSY, BUSY, BUSY right now! It's the time of year when mosquitoes show up but your husband is nowhere to be found. He's off cultivating, seeding or spraying his fields while the kids are kicking, jumping and running on theirs. My head is spinning in all directions (I think I just discovered how crop circles are made). Springtime as a mom, in a small town, means more than showing up to the ball or soccer game with a lawn chair, a bag of Spitz and enough patience to get you through a teenage boy's baseball practice. (Mosquitoes aren't the only pests on the field). Besides coaching and managing a team, equipment needs to be bought, jerseys to be ordered, registration forms sent in, money to be collected, fields need to be maintained and my least favorite of all, painting lines. We have a great group of ladies who fly solo at this time of year and still manage to get it all done despite the circumstances. One such instance is my attempt at using the sprayer to paint the lines in the soccer field. It did not come with an instruction booklet, GPS or auto steer (let alone air conditioning). I spent hours just cleaning the machine, unplugging the nozzles , filling it up, only to have it quit working and spray more paint on me than the soccer field. This sprayer wasn't the only thing experiencing a breakdown. Trying to do it all, planting a garden, coaching ball, managing soccer, heading off to work and my much dreaded painting lines experience, all led me to one thought. I need a break. I can't do it all. I am trying to do way too much in far too many places at once. That's when the irony set in. Less than five minutes after I had this thought, I walked into my office and my co-worker said "Your sister-in-law was here. She left you a KitKat bar. It's on your desk. " I had to giggle. If you haven't heard it before, the theme song for this chocolate bar is "Gimme a break, gimme a break. Break me off a piece of that piece of KitKat Bar." It's funny how the universe delivers exactly what you ask for. So what's a gal to do? I sat back, relaxed and had a KitKat Bar, maybe two, and played the song "If I had a million dollars".

By Linda Wegner As part of the responsibilities connected with representing our Member of Parliament, I was asked to plan an event; invitations are to be issued based upon specific criterion. As the scope of the project grew (don't these things always tend to do that?), so has the number of people to be invited. If even a third of these folks decide they're coming then I fear I'm looking at finding another venue and approaching the appropriate people for more money to provide

In the Church year, the time from Advent through the Day of Pentecost and Trinity Sunday is the season for lifting up the birth, life, teachings, death and resurrection of Jesus. We also celebrate that He sends the Holy Spirit and gives the great commission to make disciples. As we study all that God has done, we see how undeserving we are, yet receive the love of God in our Savior, Jesus. We learn and receive the forgiveness of our sin through the Word of God and His Sacraments. But now we are in the second half. From the Second Sunday after Pentecost we enter, what is often called, the Church's half of the year. The theme for this half is "make disciples". The color for altar cloths is green, the color suggesting growth. After receiving the grace of God in Christ, we are now invited to share that message with everyone. But often summer is a drought for faith and not growing. The first hope is for growth in the faith of the members of Christ's body, the Church. As they have heard the invitation of Jesus to make disciples, they recall the grace of God in the forgiveness of sins, and begin to see how this takes place in their lives. This Good News is so overwhelming that they will try to show this to all they meet. Their lives reflect the love of God. They do not try to overpower anyone, but to show them how Jesus overcame the world with His innocent death, and brought new life, His love, in His resurrection. But love is hard to live because we may be open to being used like Jesus. For some, the summer months become anything but a time of growth of faith or a time of positive witnessing for Jesus. Faith may deteriorate because there is less desire to worship regularly. The cabin or lakes or other "events" call us loudly, and we put our faith in Jesus on the "back burner" or "on hold". But even this may not be true. For the "back burner" still heats, but often the faith cools so much in the summer that it all but disappears. A cooling breeze feels good on a hot summer's night, but the cooling of faith can be disastrous. We may distance ourselves from active faith. "After all, it is our vacation." Above, I mentioned the words "positive witnessing for Jesus." The disaster that might happen in summer is that others see our lack of commitment to Jesus in our lack of prayer, worship, and living the Gospel. We "leave the team" for "our" time of the year. Revelation 3:14-22 quotes Jesus speaking to the church of Laodicea. He ways that, since they are neither hot nor cold, they will be spit out. They thought that they were rich and needed nothing, but did not know that they were pitiful, poor, blind and naked. He invites them to repent, saying to the church, "Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any one hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him and he with Me." This tells me that I must open the door of my faith to allow Jesus to live through me every day, summer included. One problem is that many who read this are active in faith. If this is so, show this to a fellow member, so that each can live the Gospel for others. Pray that others will commit their lives to Jesus. To live, show and tell the Good News! The Rev. Martin Olson, Zion Lutheran Church, Weyburn

the sermon our pastor preached this morning. My musings: Jesus invites us to enjoy the fullness of His blessing but there is nothing we do can make ourselves worthy of such an invitation. His guest list will never be too long, the venue never too small and the provision for our every need, never exhausted. And everyone is welcome! In compiling the list of potential attendees there are a few vital things to be considered: How do an individual or group of people qualify to make the list? If I ask Person A, does that mean I am obligated to invite that person's colleague? If so, why or why not? What are the political or financial implications of leaving Person B off the list? You get the idea and, believe me, creating a guest list will no longer be viewed as simply a matter of jotting down the first names that come to mind. What the process does bring to mind, however, is

Sun Country Regional Health Authority approves balanced budget Sun Country Regional Health Authority approved a balanced budget of more than $153 million for the 2015-16 fiscal year at its regular board meeting Wednesday, May 27. The hold-the-line budget will aim to improve patient flow and senior's care and strengthen mental health services while reducing some staff travel and administration budgets. The principle of restraint was applied to the governing Regional Health Authority as well as the Sun Country Health Region administration. The RHA's operating budget was reduced by about eight per cent for next year's operations. "Sun Country Regional Health Authority appreciates the diligence and analytical work by administration to develop a budget that continues to address the Patient First Report, improves patient and family-centred care, and supports our daily improvement work using Lean to address patient safety," says Marilyn Charlton, Chair, Sun Country Regional Health Authority. One example of Lean improvements is reorganization of the regional equipment sterilization process at Weyburn General Hospital. Defects in the process were reduced by 100 per cent, leading to a safer process for patients, residents and clients.

Mowchenko chosen to receive Helen Davidson Music Award The committee for the Helen Davidson Music Award is very pleased to announce that the 2015 Scholarship winner is Keisha Mowchenko. Keisha is graduating from the Weyburn Comprehensive High School this year and is planning to attend the Randolph Academy of the Performing Arts this fall. She applied for the scholarship in Classical Voice and Musical Theatre. She has grown as a performer in both piano and voice at the annual Music Festivals and in the Comprehensive School's Choirs and Musicals. The public is invited to attend the presentation of the $2,000.00 Scholarship to Keisha on Monday evening, June 15 at 7:00 p.m. at the T.C. Douglas Centre for the Performing Arts. Keisha will present a short program and a reception will follow.

Buy local starts June 6 The Government of Saskatchewan would like to encourage all residents to support the proclamation to "buy local" the first Saturday of every month. "We value the contribution of local businesses in communities across the province, and for that reason, want to encourage Saskatchewan residents to buy local," Immigration, Jobs, Skills and Training Minister Jeremy Harrison said. "It's a gesture of support for all those small businesses that work hard, create jobs and provide us with goods and services year-round." There are about 150,000 people employed in small business in Saskatchewan, which is about 30 per cent of the province's total labour force. A proclamation to celebrate the small business sector and the importance of buying local came into force on May 11 of this year. "I would encourage Saskatchewan residents to shop local every day, but particularly on the first Saturday of every month, beginning this week on June 6," Harrison said.

A second example is the $180,000 reduction in inventory costs in the regional material management department over the past two years as a result of Lean projects that reorganized the process for ordering supplies. The Region is facing increasing demand for medical and surgical supplies, higher maintenance and laboratory costs, higher utility costs in the three new, larger long term care facilities, increased costs due to expanding ultrasound services, and additional primary health care and chronic disease management. Cost savings will come from an expected reduction in staff sick days and overtime as the attendance management program focusses on reduced staff injuries and earlier return to work plans for staff. New programs expected this fall include CT services in St. Joseph's Hospital of Estevan, and increases to the ultrasound services in St. Joseph's Hospital of Estevan and Weyburn General Hospital. A capital budget of $1.3 million for new and replacement equipment purchases for 28 facilities and community programs has been approved. "This is a tight budget that allows for balanced growth in some service areas, consistent with our population growth and the need for updated technology. The Region also is pleased to have received funding to start the planning for a new hospital in Weyburn," says Marga Cugnet, President and CEO, Sun Country Health Region.

Weyburn Comp School news Submitted - The end has arrived and graduation will be held on June 8 for 171 Grade Twelves at WCS. All the events will be held at the Weyburn Comprehensive School starting at 10:00 a.m. with the graduation ceremonies in the Cugnet Centre. Grads have been issued tickets and the parents are asked to arrive with their RED tickets and start to enter the Centre at 9:15 a.m. They will have reserved seating on the floor and the first couple of rows in the bleachers. These seats will be marked with the grads name. At 9:30 a.m., the guests with BLUE and WHITE tickets will be admitted. The white tickets are designated and reserved on the floor on the outside edges of the Centre. The blue tickets will allow you to sit where ever there is not reserved seating. Empty seats and standing will be available for other guests at about 9:50 a.m. The ceremonies will be live streamed to the old gym where seating will be available. Parking will not be allowed directly in front of the Cugnet Centre for either the ceremonies or punch reception. Drop-off will be allowed for the ceremonies only. All guests are to park on the street or in the west parking lot. The punch reception to be held in the Colleen Weimer Hall and library courtyard will start at 2:00 p.m. and is open to all guests. Enter through the south center door or the west door. The group photo will be taken in the old gym at 3:30 p.m. Everyone will be kept out until the photographer has taken the photo. The grand march, some tributes and the grad video will be shown starting at 7:00 p.m. in the Cugnet Centre followed by the parent dance then the Chem Free Grad activities. The program is open to the public but the Chem Free is by invitation only. Grads have responsibilities on June 5. There is grad choir practice starting at 12:30 p.m., then all grads MUST attend rehearsal starting at 1:15 p.m. Be there by 1:00 p.m. At 3:00 p.m. the grads will pick up their cap and gown and from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. will bring to the school their after-grad clothing. They are also to bring the clothing for their guest. Nine athletes from WCS will be attending the Provincial SHSAA Track Championship in Yorkton this weekend.

Letter to the Editor It is coming up to a year since Arctic's rescue. I feel obligated to let everyone who showed concern for, and aided in the rescue and care of Arctic, how she has flourished since her release. Especially Brooke and Ashley, who were crucial to Arctic's survival, taking immediate action to save her. I am sure Arctic would have succumbed to the conditions of her existence if she had been imprisoned much longer. Arctic is doing well and enjoying her new home. Her coat is now thick and long. I used a leash to train her to go into the back yard, which is not completely enclosed. Being a very quick learner, she was following the other dogs in and out of the house without a leash within weeks. She enjoys her freedom, bolting fence to fence, and thinking maybe, just maybe, if she really jumps hard, she can actually get that squirrel that teases her from the tree. Arctic initially suffered separation anxiety, even with 2 other dogs around. Our heating massaging recliner is now just a plain old recliner because both cords have disappeared (thinking maybe this was a joint effort with the other dogs). The humidifier bothered her, so that cord disappeared a few days later. And no, she did not get in trouble for these actions, we simply cleaned up the pieces left on the floor, and chuckled about it (we have had worse happen from other rescue dogs). Her actions while we picked up pieces, told us she knew she had erred. Oh, and the "wireless" speakers - well, are completely wireless. She plays tug-of-war with the other 2 dogs, and because of the size differences, Arctic's hardest pulls never win. She pesters the mastiff, chews his ears and haunches, but he toler-

ates her. She drops toys in front of them to tease them. To relax after a hard play, she enjoys stretching out on top of the coffee table to watch t.v., animal or action shows preferred. Arctic remains very timid of objects like brooms or shovels, loud noises, and unfamiliar people. She has yet to attempt stairs, being quite content to watch any activity from the top. It took a significant amount of time to regain her trust of the human touch, but she now loves to snuggle and tummy rubs. She will nudge your hand if you stop. Her leg doesn't bother her when she runs in the yard, or jumps around the furniture. She did favor it on extremely cold days. It is shorter than her other front leg, so she does limp and is clumsy at times. All factors taken in to account, Arctic is a loving and beautiful dog. She is very active, which is partly her breed (American Eskimo), and partly the pup remaining in her. My last 4 dogs were rescue dogs, so I am well aware of the time and patience required to regain a mistreated dog's trust. I still cannot understand how anyone can harm or neglect an animal. Dogs are such loyal animals and would do anything for their owner, but some are so easily discarded when the novelty wears off or the puppy grows up. PLEASE research the type of dog you want. Identify the personality, activity level, and the care required. And if you have to relinquish ownership of your pet, and have exhausted all avenues to find them a new home, PLEASE take them to a shelter, where they get a chance at a healthy and happy life, instead of almost certain death when abandoned. Rescue dogs seem to have a heightened sense of loyalty. They just seem to know when they have been given that second chance, and maybe this loyalty is their way of showing

their appreciation, and saying "Thank You". I conclude with a single word, which I am sure Arctic would echo if able to speak. "Why?" Ruth Gammack

Weyburn-Big Muddy MLA and Minister of Health, Dustin Duncan, tossed out the first pitch at the Weyburn Beavers season opener on May 28.

‘Highway Hunnies’ hit the road June 7 Regina's first organized group of women motorcycle riders, the Women in the Wind Highway Hunnies Chapter are hosting a special ladies only ride event in the province June 7 to celebrate International Women in the Wind (WITW) ride day. This event is observed annually by all 101 chapters of the organization around the world. These ladies will be getting on their steel horses to enjoy some wind therapy while making a notable stop to a very special lady named Ruth Jeeves, who resides in Wolseley but is temporarily receiving respite care in Indian Head at the Golden Prairie Care Home. Chapter President, Shelly-Anne Mckay said, "Ruth is known as Canada's Oldest Motorcycle Granny as she was one of the first women to travel across Canada back in 1942 on her Harley Davidson which she named "Pinky". Jeeves who is now in her late 90's spent almost eight decades riding and traveling the highways on her motorcycle. Jeeves recalls selling Pinky to raise money to save her family farm many years ago. She missed her motorcycle so much, that in the 1980's Jeeves decided to write into CTV's hit television show called "Thrill of a Lifetime". She shared how she would love to once again be able to get on a 1942 Harley Davidson, exactly like Pinky and put a few miles on. Shortly thereafter Jeeves was invited to Toronto and was granted the opportunity to ride "Pinky II" a 1942 Harley Davidson exactly like her original, which they let her ride around the city while they filmed her having the thrill of a lifetime! She was even more thrilled when at the end of the show they GAVE her the motorcycle to keep. Jeeves said, "I was crying all over that host with tears of joy". Jeeves sold Pinky II just a couple of years ago to a fellow from Alberta who visits her regularly when passing through the area. The Highway Hunnies are looking forward to meeting Ruth in person this weekend. They will honor her and her riding history as she shares some of her favorite motorcycle memories with the ladies. Mckay said, "We are thrilled to meet Ruth in person and hope that when we all show up on our motorcycles that we bring back some good memories and bring a big smile to her face. We wanted to give her the opportunity to live vicariously through us once again - even if just for an hour". The Highway Hunnies consist of 17 full-patch women members ranging in age from 35 to 70 and they call themselves a true "sisterhood". There are several other ladies that also ride with the group as their time allows. The June 7 event is open to all lady riders, all experience levels and all makes and models of motorcycles. The ride is scheduled to depart from the Northgate Mall parking lot near the old Target at 1:00 p.m. sharp on June 7 with an estimated arrival time of 2:00 p.m. in Indian Head at the Wooden Nickel Saloon at 515 Grand Avenue.

Two quotes. That's all you need. Just two simple quotes. As we embark on a brand new football season with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and finally put 2014 in the past, there are only two people we need to hear from. The first comes from quarterback Darian Durant who was leading the Riders to a nearly franchise-best 8-2 start last year when he suffered a season-ending elbow injury in early September which sent the club into a tailspin. They went 2-7 the rest of the way including a distasteful first round playoff exit in Edmonton. With nine months to recover, which included a strong showing in the team's minicamp in Florida in April, Durant is now feeling 100%. He took to social media on the morning of Day 1 of 2015 Roughrider training camp in Saskatoon to reassure the antsy Rider Nation. "So blessed to be able to be able to do what I love for a living," Durant wrote from his Twitter account at @DarianDurant. "Still feel like a kid going into my 10th camp!!" That's music to our ears and Durant got the bulk of the work with the first team offense Sunday as he continues to test out his arm and get acclimated to new offensive coordinator Jacques Chapdelaine. He passed both with flying colours. The other guy you need to hear from is head coach Corey Chamblin who enters his fourth season in charge on the Rider sidelines. Along with General Manager Brendan Taman, Chamblin was tireless in building a roster which he believes will be in the 2015 Grey Cup in Winnipeg in November. "I think it's different," Chamblin said, referring to his roster makeup from one year ago. "I think in some areas we're a little bit better and that's just a part of coaching and personnel and different things. When we looked at it, we addressed different issues. Sometimes it's not what we didn't find, it was what was available. I think this year there was a different set of guys available to us." Chamblin's talking about the pool of available free agents and veterans on the trade market which he carefully selected for his locker room. Grey Cup champions like receiver Jamel Richardson, middle linebacker Shea Emry, defensive end Alex Hall and defensive back Keenan McDougall were all added to bolster the lineup and provide the unteachable intangible of "knowing how to win". The club enters the 2015 CFL campaign with only one glaring question mark and it's along the invaluable offensive line where games are often won and lost. Veteran centre Dominic Picard was cut loose this winter and star right tackle Ben Heenan was lost to the NFL's Indianapolis Colts. Those are two important holes which the club is hoping to fill by unproven younger players. However the backbone of the team starts with the head coach and ends with the quarterback. If you have two cornerstones in place in those spots, you're in good shape. Down south, New England has the trusted tandem of Bellichick and Brady while Seattle has the solid pair of Carroll and Wilson. The good teams all do. Chamblin and Durant have the same credentials with championship rings along with Coach of the Year and MVP awards on their resumes. The core is strong. Who knows how the 2014 season would have ended up had Durant stayed healthy? We'll never know the answer to that and perhaps we can finally stop thinking about it. No, the time for optimism is now. Here in early June everyone is tied for first-place and every team feels good about the club they've assembled. Pretty soon we'll board the always-entertaining roller coaster that is Roughrider season and I hope you'll be along to follow the club's fortunes every step of the way. (Rod Pedersen is the voice of the Riders and can be heard daily on 620 CKRM's SportsCage at 4:00 pm across Saskatchewan.)
