Weyburn hosts prov’l competition Over 400 skaters, from across the province, participated in the annual provincial Jean Norman Skating competition, held in Weyburn February 27 to March 1. The three-day competition was held at Crescent Point Place and Tom Zandee Sports Arena and was hosted by the Weyburn Skating Club.

Norman, who was born and raised in Saskatoon, began figure skating in the early years of the Saskatoon Figure Skating Club and was encouraged by her father, who also took up skating in order to accompany her.

Jean led the way for Saskatchewan skaters, becoming one of the first skaters from that club to travel by train to Winnipeg for C.F.S.A. tests. Over the years, Jean lived in the United States, where she secured her professional status before moving back to Saskatchewan.

Upon returning to the province, Norman brought back a wealth of experience that she not only shared on the ice, but off as well. She had participated in every competition as a judge, accountant or both.

After she lost her battle with cancer in December of 1975, the Jean Norman competition began as a memorial of her example of enthusiasm, courage and devotion to duty, which she gave to all those whose lives she touched and the mark she left on the skating world.

Twenty-seven local skaters participated on the provincial level in this year's competition, in categories such as elements, pattern dance, competitive free, spin, jump, interpretive dance and special Olympic events. Each skater from the local club participated in an average of two to three events.

Countless hours spent by local volunteers and community sponsors made the event a huge success.

Local skater, Hallie Bourassa, a member of the Weyburn Skating Club, performed in the provincial Jean Norman Skating competition held in Weyburn February 27 - March 1.

Local broker wins award Winston Bailey, of Re/Max Weyburn Realty 2011, was awarded the Western Canada Broker of the Year - small market, in a ceremony held March 1 in Las Vegas, NV.

Spring Dinner Theatre dates set 15031SPP02

The Weyburn Agricultural Society is collaborating with Crocus 80 to put on a play written by Jim Brochu entitled 'Cookin' With Gus'.

The play is about how cookbook author Gus Richardson is offered a chance to make a television show like her idol, Julia Child.

She is being pressed into it by her agent, Bernie Luskin and her Gypsy next door neighbor, Carmen. Problems arise when she gets resistance from her husband, Walter. She discovers that she suffers from stage fright and cannot speak when the microphone is on. Many antics (including a food fight) follow before things are resolved and the producer agrees to go ahead

with the show.

Charline Doney will play Gus, Pete Broccolo will portray Walter, Wendy Kimber will play Carmen and Neil Keefe will play Bernie. The comedic combination of food, fun and fortune telling will be directed by

Sabrina Kraft. Come out for an opportunity to shake off the winter blues and your cabin fever and have a bit of fun with a group of your friends.

The performances will be at the Royal Canadian Legion from March 19-22 with

Weyburn Comp School news The Grade Nine Night for all parents and students coming over to WCS this fall was held on Wednesday, March 4.

The senior girls' basketball team will be in Estevan on March 6 and 7 with the senior boys playing in Melfort on the same dates, for the final tournament of the year. Conference playoffs will begin on March 13.

Residents reminded that operating snow machines in the city is prohibited On March 1, Weyburn Police Service members attended to a noisy party and assisted in dispersing those involved by giving some of the youths a ride home. Police also charged an 18 yearold male under the alcohol and gaming regulations with a minor possessing alcohol.

On February 28, the Weyburn Police Service received a complaint of a possible credit card fraud involving members of the same family. It is alleged that one family member was fraudulently using another family member's credit card. The

"Roadbeds remain frozen in most of the province meaning trucks can continue to haul primary weight and realize the savings that come with fewer trips," Highways and Infrastructure Minister Nancy Heppner said. "Field staff will monitor road conditions to ensure shippers can maximize the amount of goods they can move as long as possible without risking damage to the roads."

Winter weights were removed from specific highways at 12:01 a.m. March 1 in the southwest and will gradually be removed from the rest of the province as temperatures rise. Shippers should also be aware of spring road bans during the six-week thaw period, when roads are most vulnerable to damage.

Weight restriction orders around winter weights are published online at www.highways.gov.sk.ca/restrictions/ under the "New Winter Order" link. Regularly scheduled updates of the winter restriction orders will be provided every Tuesday and Friday by 12:30 p.m. until March 15 when winter weights are removed from the entire province according to legislation.

Also on February 28, police received a complaint of snow machines being driven in the area of Coteau Avenue and Eleventh Street.

Police were unable to identify the individuals involved.

We would like to remind those individuals who own snow machines, that under the City Bylaws, operating snow machines in the city is prohibited.

On February 27, members of the Weyburn PS attended to a local bar after reports of a disturbance by fighting.

Upon police arrival the individuals involved were dispersed with no further problems. No charges were laid.

On February 25, the Weyburn PS received a complaint of an identity fraud.

The 50 year-old victim attended the Police Service and reported that he had been contacted by a credit card company regarding usage of a credit card in his name.

They were also inquiring about outstanding loans from Eastern Canada in excess of $35,000. The victim

denied any knowledge of any of these transactions. The incident is currently being investigated.

On February 24, the Weyburn Police Service received a complaint of numerous vehicles parked in Jubilee Park. Police attended and during the course of the investigation arrested an 18 year-old male driver for impaired care and control of a vehicle. The male was transported to cells and subsequently charged with being over .08, as well as being charged with open liquor in a vehicle. The accused's vehicle was also impounded.

The accused was later released from custody and will be appearing in court later in March.

On February 23, the Weyburn PS responded to a motor vehicle accident at Government Road and Highway 39. The male driver was stopped in traffic when his foot slipped off the brake and onto the gas pedal causing his vehicle to hit the stopped semi in front of him.

Also on February 23, the Weyburn Police Service attended to a domestic between a 31 year-old male and a 26 year-old female. The male agreed to leave the residence and an allegation of assault is being investigated.

A disagreement between a 17 year-old male and a 37 yearold male family member had escalated into a physical confrontation with the 17 year-old being assaulted with a weapon. Both involved individuals received minor injuries and the 17 year-old was treated in hospital and later

Win or lose

By Helen Waller The end of winter is near and with that starts the playoff season in sports such as curling, hockey and skating.

Over the years as my children have grown, I have noticed a switch in attitude when it comes to the importance of winning. A new focus on participating in a particular event has become more important than the score at the end of the game. I think this has a definite advantage especially to the younger children who do not have the maturity to process that winning isn't simply good and losing isn't simply bad. It is a much broader issue than that.

Children can benefit at an early age from having the joy of participating in a sport without the entire focus being the end result of the game. What worries me most about the radical shift in perspective towards sports is how far in the opposite direction we have gotten. It seems to me at an appropriate age, the idea of winning or losing a game can be introduced. Why is it so unfair for one team to win, one to lose? What are we teaching our children if they can't have a healthy self-esteem unless they win? So what, if one hockey team is stronger? That doesn't take away from the fact that your player worked hard and did their best.

My son’s hockey team played one of the best games of their little seven year-old lives last weekend. It was a win FOR THEM. Those kids worked hard and played their best. They earned the right to move to the semi final, which we are anticipating to be a 20 - 0 blowout, and not for our team. So, we won't win. They had a great year. They made it to this point.

The other team is simply stronger and that's okay. Every person and every team is at a different level.

Perhaps rather than focusing on the final score, we can focus on the wins along the way for the team. Although we won't win top of the league, our players were still successful in their own way. Some learned how to raise the puck, some learned how to play their position and some grasped the idea of off-side.

It is not healthy for our children to be threatened by another player or another entire team for having skills we haven't mastered yet (or just may never) or for performing stronger.

What are we teaching our children? That we need to take away the WIN from someone who deserved it just for us to feel better about ourselves? The other team is full of great little hockey players and if those were our children winning would we have a different view? A healthier way to approach would be to teach our children to appreciate qualities in another player. Someone else can be really good at something without it being detrimental to their self-esteem.

In fact, we can teach our children to look up to people who win as a way to learn, and improve.

Life is a playing ground. Whether it be on the soccer field, at the hockey rink or the local science fair.

People win and people lose. We need to teach our children to do both well.

Remind me, why did I choose that?

By Linda Wegner Discovering one's passion is a major step in changing careers. It is, however, just one step. As obvious as it may seem, it's not only important to know what you want to do, it's also vital to remember why you've chosen that option.

In an earlier blog I noted that, for me, writing seemed like the sensible fit. I was forever jotting down ideas for stories and articles and editors from local newspapers and national magazines had deemed my work worthy of publication. It was the perfect choice for this life-changing situation. At least it seemed that way so long as I remembered why.

Because our situation had changed so quickly I found myself caught up in the busyness of business: create a budget before purchasing a proper desk, office supplies and business cards, make phone calls and send out resumes, contact editors, set fees and begin searching for work. A lot of work.

As my emerging dream began to gain substance and form, so did the cold, hard reality of expenses verses revenue and the number of opportunities compared to the skilled and experienced writers waiting to take advantage of them. I began to replay those negative opinions that been expressed to me mere weeks before.

In an act of defiance against the voices telling me I'd never make it, I made a list of my specific reasons for choosing writing as a career and I pinned it above my computer screen. I focused on the things that I loved to do while accepting that dreams can change shape in the process of becoming a reality. Of all I'd already learned and accomplished, however, the two greatest lessons were these: changing careers isn't for cowards and, I wasn't alone.

If this life which we call "Christian" is to mean anything at all, if it is to transcend any taint of hypocrisy, indeed if there is to be any benefit derived from membership in the body of Christ, the body must truly be a body. This body must function as an organism of diverse members, each working together under the direction one Head, toward the body's own nurture and nourishment. Its members must be likeminded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.

No member in the body of Christ exists for itself alone. The body is not a collection of one-celled organisms, each equipped to perform all life functions; indeed, such creatures do exist within the confines of the body, but they are not part of it. These are parasites that ravage and weaken the body in order to sustain themselves. In contrast, the members of the body are composed of specialized cells, none of which can exist and thrive apart from the cooperation of the body. They are not independent; they are interdependent.

Therefore, a true Christian cannot be self-interested; he must be body-interested. His motive is first of all to assist the fellow members in performing their specialized tasks. This, in turn enables the body to attain all necessities of life, resulting in the growth and nourishment of every member. The body-serving Christian knows he will benefit from serving, but his primary motive is not to receive that benefit. He values the life of the body more than his own life. He fully conforms to the mind of Christ, the head of the body and the command centre for all of its functions.

We Christians would all do well to remember our place in Christ's body, "For the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body," that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? STC passenger fare increase

APES school spirit day

Saskatchewan Transportation Company (STC) passenger fares will increase by an average of 4.5 per cent beginning March 2, 2015. The average fare increase per ticket will be $1.65 based on an average one way trip of 182 kilometres (113.4 miles).

The price of the medical pass will not increase and will remain at $66.20.

STC continues to receive very high customer satisfaction ratings and will continue to offer the Frequent Rider Card. The purchase of a Frequent Rider Card for $30 (plus tax) allows passengers to save 20 per cent off of every adult or student ticket purchased for one year.

The last STC passenger fare increase was 5.5 per cent effective August 1, 2014.
