Weyburn Young Fellows partner with City of Weyburn

Members of the Young Fellows of Weyburn presented a cheque for $125,000.00 to the City of Weyburn on June 22. The generous donation will be used towards building a new paddling pool at the Don Mitchell Tot Lot in 2016. Pictured (l-r), Weyburn Young Fellow members Mark Missal, Scott Paxman, Jeff Hayward, Duane Walkeden, Weyburn City Councillor Dick Michel, Weyburn Young Fellow member Grant Benning, Weyburn Mayor Debra Button, Weyburn Young Fellow members Kurtis Schwindt, Don Baillie, Ryan Skjerdal, Andy Barber, Kyle Walkeden (with daughters Madison and Claire), Taylor Gonczy and Shane Dammann. The Young Fellows of Weyburn and the City of Weyburn are pleased to announce a partnership for a new paddling pool at the Don Mitchell Tot Lot. Members of the Young Fellows were at the site on June 22 to present a cheque to Mayor Debra Button. The Young Fellows donated $125,000.00 towards the project. Brett Ferguson, President of the Weyburn Young Fellows, said the Tot Lot holds a special place for the Young Fellows. “We built the original paddling pool, we put in the playground equipment, so when this one needed the work, we decided that we should step

up”, explained Ferguson. The City of Weyburn is currently in the design phase of the project. The construction of the paddling pool is set to begin in May/June of 2016, with a goal of having the grand opening on July 1 of that same year. The new project will increase the size of the paddling pool by nearly double, with zero beach entry, larger grounds, with additional green space and more shaded areas, both trees and covers. The new paddling pool will be named the Young Fellows Paddling Pool.

CUPE #90 helps out Food Bank Rain needed in most areas Much of the province received scattered rainfall that helped replenish topsoil moisture conditions in some regions. However, significant rain is needed soon in many areas to help crops, hay and pasture develop. Topsoil moisture conditions continue to deteriorate despite the recent rain. Provincially, topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as three per cent surplus, 45 per cent adequate, 35 per cent short and 17 per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as one per cent surplus, 33 per cent adequate, 42 per cent short and 24 per cent very short. Much of the hay is in poor condition and concerns about feed shortages continue. The Ministry of Agriculture has a Forage, Feed and Custom Service listing for producers to advertise and source feed products at www.agriculture.gov.sk.ca/FeedForageListing#bmk. Crop development is delayed in some areas, mainly due to cool and dry weather. Fifty-one per cent of fall cereals, 60 per cent of spring cereals, 53 per cent of oilseeds and 56 per cent of pulse crops are at their normal developmental stages for this time of year. The majority of crops are in fair to good condition. Crop damage was mainly caused by lack of moisture, hail and insects such as grasshoppers and flea beetles. Farmers are busy controlling pests and hauling grain. City Treasurer, Sabrina Lawrans, (left) and President of CUPE Local #90, Rawn Oliver, presented a cheque for $500.00 to Community Ministries Co-ordinator, Jennifer Lorinczi, on June 18. The monies will be used to help fill the shelves at Weyburn Salvation Army’s Food Bank.

Weyburn This Week VIEWPOINTS Do you have a LETTER TO THE EDITOR TO SHARE WITH US? Please email it to us at weyburnthisweek@sasktel.net

Take the time By Andrea Corrigan With Father's Day behind us, I felt that this was the perfect time to share a rant that I have held in since Mother's Day. After conversations with friends, colleagues and co-workers, I decided I couldn't hold back any longer. MAYBE THAT’S JUST ME Can the kids today not pick up the phone and give their Mom or Dad a call on their special day? Why do they think that a simple 'Happy Father's Day' or 'Happy Mother's Day' over a text on their cell phone is sufficient? Remember that whole (lack of emotion) concept that is associated with a text? Well that applies to a text to your Mom and Dad also. All they are, are words. Even if you add a "love you" on the end, it's just not the same. Have we been so sucked into technology that we can't even pick up the phone and express a quick message to our parents? You see, what you don't understand is that we just want to know that you can spare ten minutes of YOUR TIME. A bonus would be an hour on our special day for lunch or supper. It seems if kids are actually working, it's to buy a car or get a better cell phone. Can they not even spend $10 or so of their 'fun money' to treat their parent to a meal and spend some time with them? Don't even get me started on the gift of a card, whether store-bought or homemade. In my previous life (before my divorce), it was tradition to go to Dairy Queen on Mother's Day and I WOULD PAY. It was and still is a running joke. It wasn't about the money, it was about the time with my kids. I have always told my kids that I expect to be recognized on two days of the year. Mother's Day and my birthday. I don't think that's too much to ask. They are busy, they have their own lives and I understand that, but I'm their Mother and I have earned that small amount of their time. Even now, as adults, my children know and respect that I still require a small amount of their time. It doesn't matter if you're a regular family or a blended family, you owe it to your parents to recognize them. They've earned it. Whew…with that over, I can move on to my second rant - under-aged children at the movies. I am so sick of parents dumping their kids off at the show, with cash in hand, to get them out of their hair. They don't seem concerned over the rating of the movie, the cost of the movie or who they are going with. I am embarrassed to sit through a 14A or restricted movie with a 10 or 12 year-old kid in front of me. It is an adult movie for a reason. It has adult content. Whether it is a language warning, frightening scenes or adult content warning, there is a reason that movies have ratings. It normally is to help viewers determine if the movie should be shown to a certain age group. Really, parents? Take some responsibility for your children. Better yet, spend some time with them and put a little effort into their lives. There are enough dysfunctional things going on in this world without you not investigating whether your child should sit through an hour and a half of swearing. That's your job to protect them from the big, bad world. They grow up too fast enough. Step up and spend some quality time with your kids. End of rants!!!! Facebook Saying of the Week: When you're stressed, you eat ice cream, cake, chocolate and sweets. Why? Because STRESSED spelled backwards is DESSERTS. (Ha, ha - I like that one). ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○ ○

O Canada: God Keep our Land Glorious and Free! These words from our national anthem came to mind as I reflected upon the upcoming Canada Day on July 1st and the federal election later this fall. While I never question God's power to protect and watch over us, sometimes I wonder just how much we value both the freedom and the capacity to do good in the world by utilizing well our standing among the nations of the world. Instead of upholding God's standard and Word for others to emulate, we are hastening to lead the way or at least catch up with the rest of the dubious worldly standards that are risking a greater fragmentation of our society. I am speaking here of abortion on demand, the changing definition of marriage (which is not to be confused as being against and disrespectful towards gays and lesbians - call them "civil unions" if you wish), and now euthanasia and physician assisted suicide. Let's not kid ourselves at just how quickly these realities and the consequent shift of our acceptance are changing the landscape of our Canadian society and how future generations will be impacted. Talk about the moral and ethical vacuum that will exist in the minds of many. We are witnessing a complete lack of moral integrity among our elected political and appointed judicial officials across the whole political spectrum. Nobody seems to dare to tackle or speak against what seems to be commonly accepted or resigned to by the large number of Canadians. I think it is time for thinking and freedom-loving Canadians to seriously quiz our politicians seeking election to represent us and to make decisions on our behalf in Ottawa and also in Regina. To single out these three issues is not intended to isolate them from other pressing matters on world peace, world-wide poverty and hunger, the growing number of refugees seeking safety, and caring for the environment. If God is to keep our country “glorious and free”, then we need to pray in all earnestness and greater fervor for a change of heart among ourselves, fellow Canadians and our aspiring politicians. As John the Baptist declared, “Christ must increase and I must decrease.” (John 3:30) How else can this happen, if not by submitting in full obedience and allegiance to Christ, His teaching and example of life, so that the person resonates in everything we think, do and are. St. Paul would say, “I have been crucified with Christ, and I live now not with my own life, but with the life of Christ who lives in me.” (Galatians 2:20) All of us should strive and aspire to this! Happy Canada Day and may God bless each of you and our country! - Respectfully submitted by Fr. Gerry Bauche, St. Vincent de Paul Parish

Thought for the week "A pessimist is one who makes difficulties of his opportunities and an optimist is one who makes opportunities of his difficulties." - Harry S. Truman

I sing... simply because By Linda Wegner Some time ago a friend sent me a lovely card. Sketched in pencil there's an image of a bird perched securely on a twig, beak open and lifted to the skies. A Chinese proverb reads: 'A bird does not sing because it has an answer but because it has a song.' I've attached it to the ledge on the shelf above my keyboard. The power of a song, be it that of a robin, sparrow, loon or one of the ten thousand bird species in the world, is impossible to express in mere words. Then, there is the unsurpassed loveliness of a hurting piece of

FORECAST

humanity who refuses to stop singing no matter the ferocity of his or her circumstances. The truth of that statement was stamped on my heart this week while attending a symphonic concert of music marking the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Holland from the Nazis. Just imagine this: Rudolf Karel wrote Nonet in 1945 while imprisoned in the Theresienstadt concentration camp; Olivier Messiaen wrote his Quatuor pur la Fin du Temps in 1941 while imprisoned in a German prisoner-of-war camp. (Not only that, three other imprisoned musicians played his music in the night, after spending the day in hellish condi-

tions.) These men were just two of the many who refused to quit making music even though they faced a certain death. "For these laws of yours have been my source of joy and singing through all these years of my earthly pilgrimage." Psalm 119:54 (Living Bible) While most of us will be spared a martyr's death, life gives us abundant opportunity to sing, not because there are answers but because He gives us a song. No matter what I, or you, are facing today, may we reach deep into the recesses of our souls and sing a song!

Blood donor clinic

News from City Council Weyburn City Council held their regular council meeting on June 22 before moving to one meeting per month for July and August. Many of the Council items dealt with the kick off to summer. The dates of the Weyburn Agricultural Society Annual Fair were announced as June 29-July 1. The Weyburn Agricultural Society Rodeo will be held July 17-19. Council also approved a new food truck, Floss Boss, that will be operating in conjunction with the fair. Throughout the summer, Weyburn will be participating in Communities in Bloom for the first time since the flood. All you gardeners and green thumbs are encouraged to help the city explode with colour. The Communities in Bloom judges will be through the city in late July - early August. On more serious business, the City Police reported to Council that the Violence Intervention office has acquired a trauma dog for use in emergency situations. Trauma dogs help to comfort victims in the aftermath of crisis situations. In addition to being the season of sun and fun, summer is also the season of roadwork. City crews are putting up new traffic signs on King Street to moderate traffic through the school zones. Crews will also start painting road lines within the next ten days. Finally, all residents are reminded of the ongoing bridge closure on Government Road.

Gains for wholesale trade Wholesale trade jumped 17.9 per cent in April 2015 over last April, almost three times the national average of 6.7 per cent according to Statistics Canada. Saskatchewan had the highest percentage increase among the provinces. "Saskatchewan's economy is making real gains in many areas," Economy Minister Bill Boyd said. "Diversification has put our province in a highly competitive position relative to the other provinces." In total, wholesale trade in April was $2.4 billion, up from $2.0 billion in 2014. That's the highest on record for the month of April. "The record wholesale numbers from April show the strength of Saskatchewan's economy," Boyd said. "Population and jobs are up, which is a clear indication that Saskatchewan people are prospering and well positioned for the future."

First time blood donor, Lydia Niemegeers of Weyburn, attended the donor clinic, held June 23 at Crescent Point Place. Health Care worker, Karen Ripplinger of Regina, assisted Lydia in her first time experience.

The 3rd annual Luff and Seghs Memorial Classic Golf Tournament was held June 20 at the Weyburn Golf Course. Event co-chairs Keyla Tochor (far left) and Tamara Seghers (far right) presented the tournament 'trophy' to the team that had the most fun - Brett Verot, Katie Walters, Jill Becker and Rikki Miller. The 2015 CFL season is about to kickoff and all nine teams are lined up at the starter's gate with identical 0-0 records. Savour this moment because everyone's tied for firstplace and optimism reigns supreme. It may be a stretch to say excitement is at an all-time high across the CFL but it's certainly right up there in the Wheat Province. Keep in mind, too, this could be an historic season because if the CFL owners and governors have their way, this may be the final season which kicks off around Canada Day. They'd like to move it up by as much as a month beginning as early as next year. Here in Saskatchewan, there is no need to cross our fingers and pray for the best like so many years ago. (Although that never hurts). This year's Roughriders are a sturdy unit which appears to be in contention to play in the 2015 Grey Cup in the new Investors Group Field in Winnipeg. After an 0-2 preseason, I'm still scratching my head at what exactly the Riders have assembled here. But that's fine. The 2013 Grey Cup championship team seems like eons ago but there are still some traces of it left behind in the form of Darian Durant, Weston Dressler, Chris Getzlaf, John Chick, Alex Hall, Tyron Brackenridge and the like. There's a perilously thin

line between "old" and "veteran" and we found this out during the fated 5-13 season of 2011. However Father Time has not yet caught up to this group. Of that I am confident, but he does have a tendency to show up unannounced. To counter that, there's a virtual flood of rookies on this year's team including the next wave of franchise stars like 2015 draftees Nic Demski (receiver/returner) and Rory Connop (defensive tackle). I counted nine brand new faces who avoided the two swings of the axe at countdown time. "I think it's a very good mix," announced Riders head coach Corey Chamblin at the conclusion of the preseason. "The one thing I'll tell you about these young guys is a lot of them have been through a lot in their personal lives. I think they'll use that in their professional lives. They're tough and they're ready to go." One thing that popped out in the preseason was the sparkling play of back-up quarterback Kevin Glenn. He effortlessly moved the ball with an 83% completion rate and casually threw a pair of touchdowns. The team's in good stead in the event Darian Durant goes down. (You can cross your fingers again). "Kevin's crisp in all that he does," Chamblin continued. "And he's here for two reasons: either for his performance or his presence. Darian is clean also. It just

makes us stronger and that's what we need. As a matter-of-fact we have the two winningest quarterbacks of the past five years." Oh to have been able to say that last year. Although I seem to be the only one bringing that up around here anymore. So now the football club is ready to set sail on a brand new season and it begins with a visit from the rival Winnipeg Blue Bombers this Saturday at 6:00 pm at Mosaic Stadium (TSN, CKRM Rider Radio Network). While the Riders feel pretty buoyant of their chances after a decent showing the preseason, the Blue Bombers are already fretting after a 26-15 home loss to Hamilton in their exhibition finale. "Pre-season or not, I hate losing," spewed Bomber centre Dominic Picard to a Winnipeg reporter. "I hate this feeling. It makes me sick." Boy that started earlier than normal! But I've seen teams snap out of a funk like that in just a matter of days and by the time the Bombers come to town later this week, they'll be ready to ruin the Riders' party in their home-opener. Saskatchewan intends to be ungracious hosts. (Rod Pedersen is the Voice of the Roughriders and can be heard daily at 4:00 pm in the SportsCage on 620 CKRM Regina)
