Scott Woods set to perform at Grace United Church June 14 Renowned Canadian Fiddle Champion Scott Woods and his band will be in Weyburn on June 14 for a performance at Grace United Church.

"Fiddling in the key of EH?" promises to be a fast paced and uplifting show which explores the great Canadian fiddling styles and influences from Cape Breton, Scottish, Acadian, Irish, French Canadian, Metis and Eastern Europe.

The performance will feature plenty of old time fiddling, championship step dancing, trick fiddling, family humor and other aspects of our culture that truly reflect the Canadian culture.

Scott Woods is a two time winner of the Canadian Open Fiddle Contest, two time winner of the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Championship, as well as Fiddle Entertainer of the Year.

Scott's famous trick fiddling routine, where he somersaults and walks on a barrel while playing his fiddle, has earned him the nickname ‘the Flipin' Fiddler’ and three consecutive Canadian Novelty Fiddle Championship titles.

Scott's love of fiddling has been passed down through six generations. He studied classical violin since the tender age of four and plays several other instruments as well including drums, bass, piano, saxophone and clarinet.

Over the years Scott has travelled extensively, bringing his talents to the stage, raising money for churches, charities and a variety of community organizations. To date, over two million dollars has been raised.

Joining Scott on this three province tour that began this spring are three equally talented artists, Tommy Leadbeater, Bruce Timmins and Kyle Waymouth.

Tommy Leadbeater, who is a Cape Breton tenor, possesses a captivating voice, with its crystal clear tones, rich in harmonics and an upper range that has earned him the reputation of being one of Nova Scotia’s finest voices.

Guitar virtuoso and East Coast Music Award winner, Bruce Timmins, began playing guitar at the age of ten. His instrumental prowess and versatility has made him one of the most respected guitar players in the Martimes today.

Kyle Waymouth is an accomplished step dancer with over 50 first place finishes to date including the Canadian Open Championships and the prestigious Pembroke Championhisps. Waymouth recently won the title of Canadian Open Clogging Champion.

City announces property tax notices Weyburn Director of Finance Laura Missal has announced city residents will soon be receiving property tax and assessment notices in the mail.

"This is an important document so please be sure to pay close attention to it. We want to ensure that everyone understands the taxes they will be required to pay and that everyone is taxed fairly," said Missal.

Missal emphasized that the assessment roll would be open for inspection from now until June 25, 2015.

"This is your opportunity to review your assessment and file an appeal if there are errors in the assessment of your property," said Missal.

The assessment roll can be viewed at City Hall during regular office hours (Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.).

The deadline to file an appeal is Thursday, June 25, 2015 at 4:30 p.m.

SE College holds benefit for Weyburn food bank

Southeast College is collecting donations for the Weyburn and Estevan Food Banks at the campuses. The food banks are both at critically low supply levels as the summer approaches.

"This idea came together really quickly when we heard about the need at the Food Banks," said McGrath. "I am very proud of our staff for being so responsive and creating a simple and effective way to give back to our communities."

The public is invited to help Southeast College collect food from May 25 to June 1. You can drop off donations at the collection bins at either the Weyburn or Estevan campus.

On Friday, June 5, the College will hold pizza lunches for staff at its Weyburn and Estevan campuses, with all proceeds going to benefit the Weyburn and Estevan Food Banks.

Staff will be contributing both food and cash donations in exchange for a slice for lunch.

"We are a member of these communities and we serve people throughout the southeast," said Dion McGrath, President and CEO of Southeast College.

"We challenge other businesses and groups to join in with us and help fill those shelves."

Missal hired as new Director of Finance for City of Weyburn Mayor Debra Button has announced that Laura Missal has been hired to fill the role of Director of Finance.

"We are very excited to have Laura join our team. Needless to say, the Director of Finance job is an extremely important one - in some ways, more important than the Mayor's job. Everything else in the City operations flows from the work the Director of Finance does, so we took the time to make sure we had the right person for the job," Button said.

Laura was born and raised in Weyburn. She received her bachelor of commerce degree in accounting from the University of Saskatchewan. After university, she worked at the

Weyburn office of Meyers Norris Penny for four years where she received her designation as a professional accountant.

Laura and her husband Mark, spent eight years working in the Cayman Islands where she performed accounting work for multi-national investment companies dealing in assets in the billions of dollars. Laura, Mark and their three boys, moved back to Weyburn one year ago.

Laura notes that, during her time at Meyers Norris Penny she carried out audits for a number of municipalities including the City of Weyburn, giving her a solid background coming into her new role.

"There were a lot of familiar faces here with whom I had worked on the audits. That's made the transition easier.

Everyone here has been very helpful in getting me settled into the new job. I can tell that it's going to be a very positive place to work," Missal said.

According to Mayor Button, the feeling is mutual.

"Laura has made a great first impression on everyone at City Hall. We are looking forward to having a long, productive relationship with her. Our last Director of Finance worked for us for 10 years so that is the 'high score' we are hoping Laura can beat."

Something for everyone at the third annual Art Farm Submitted - This week's crop of Art Farmers has yielded Jaynie Himsl and Terry Creurer.

Terry is, at her core, deeply mystical, with a strong connection to the Earth. And she does love her earth. Maybe. Where some find their voice in music or paintbrush or chicken breeding it's clay that speaks to Terry and we can only wonder at what encouragements or advice it gives. Or perhaps it is taunts. She attacks her clay with gusto, pounding it flat, pinching, poking, bending, and rolling. She spurns the potter's wheel, saying "Too easy! To get the best from clay you have to work it hard." Her snarl is a little frightening, her passion evident and her enthusiasm for glaze and firing is fanatical. Still, the results cannot be denied. Look for the traffic jam at Art Farm III and Terry will likely be at the center of it, haranguing the crowd with her advice on firing temperatures for political figures.

Jaynie comes by her craft honestly, having been trained at an early age to produce grain sacks on a treadle-sewing machine in 12 hour shifts by a stern and angry grandmother. These early fundamental skills enabled an easy sale of the young girl to an artist's collective where she was chained to an ELECTRIC sewing machine to produce Artist's Trading Cards in child-labour friendly sweat-shop. There she learned many artistic skills and styles and became familiar with different materials. Jaynie was given her own stall in the barn at Art Farm I and is deeply grateful for the personal water trough and clean straw. The improved working conditions have meant a blossoming of creativity and productivity for her.

Drier weather helping out with seeding Dry weather this past week has allowed producers to make significant seeding progress across the province.

Sixty-four per cent of the 2015 crop is now seeded, according to the Saskatchewan Agriculture Crop Report. The five-year (2010-2014) average for this time of year is 24 per cent seeded.

Producers in the southwest are most advanced, with 86 per cent of the crop seeded. In the southeast, 66 per cent is seeded; the west-central region has 72 per cent seeded; the east-central and northeastern regions have 42 per cent seeded; and northwestern region has 68 per cent seeded.

Topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as 10 per cent surplus, 68 per cent adequate, 20 per cent short

and two per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as eight per cent surplus, 67 per cent adequate, 19 per cent short and six per cent very short. Moisture conditions vary throughout the province.

Precipitation varied across the province, ranging from nil to 49 mm. Cool, dry weather has delayed germination and crop development in many areas. Frost was reported in many areas and producers are assessing damage at this time, while hoping for warm weather.

Some areas have reported wet conditions resulting in machinery getting stuck and some access roads being impassable. Other areas are hoping for rain to recharge the top soil that is getting too dry.

It's the thought that counts…

Just keep running (or walking)

By Helen Waller I recently celebrated my birthday (29 again… that’s somewhere between “I was 29 quite a while ago and I'm not telling you my age anymore.”)

I am not sure why people don't like birthdays. Mine was fantastic. The people in my life know how to make a gal feel special. I have noticed that men in general, though, cringe at the thought of birthdays because it usually means they feel the pressure to shop for the lady in their life.

So, I have a few ideas that just might make life easier.

1. Ask for help - It’s like asking for directions but for shopping. I know that is unchartered territory for male species, but think of it this way... asking for help is like farming with GPS. It's alot easier to do. So if you have one (i.e. teenage daughter or family friend) ask them for help.

2. Never, ever purchase a vacuum. EVER. Or any other appliance, for that matter. Those resemble work and we do enough of that the other 364 days a year.

3. Buy her a hot tub (I am just sneaking this one in there, just in case my husband reads this article).

4. Do not bring anything “live” home. (Unless it’s lobster.)

5. Listen to the hints she gives you, several times a day, for weeks ahead of time. This is especially true if you have been married for over ten years. By then, she knows you aren't magically coming up with the perfect gift, so she starts planting seeds in your head of what she really wants.

6. Send her to a salon or spa to treat herself to something like a new hairdo. When she is at the salon, practice what you will say to her when she gets home. Things like “Ohhhh, your hair looks short” or “Did you do something different?” will be responses that will only undo all the good you did by sending her to the salon in the first place. Keep it simple with a comment like “You look beautiful”. It's safe and ladies love to hear that.

7. Involve your kids. A sure way to warm a woman's heart is to get the kids to make a card or craft. Nothing better than a little one’s sticky fingers, sloppy kisses and a card made of macaroni. If they are teenagers, be sure to remind them that it is in their best interest to acknowledge their Mom’s birthday in some small way (for their own safety). The mess teenagers leave in their path is not nearly as adorable to their mothers as it was when they were toddlers.

8. Be very aware of the dangers of buying clothing. If you buy the wrong size, especially too big, you need to read number 3 again.

9. Try cooking supper or take her out if your culinary skills are limited to opening a can of alphaghetti. No one needs food poisoning on their birthday. In fact, if your wife does the majority of the cooking, try this: “Honey, you always cook for me. I would never be able to cook a meal like you do so I thought I would do the next best thing... and take you out for supper.” (You can thank me for this one later.)

10. It's the thought that counts. Unless you give her the gift and she says what the h*ll were you thinking, then you are on your own. Best to reread this article.

At the end of the day, birthdays really don't have to be that hard. Whether you bake a cake, make a card, decorate her office or tell her she looks young for her age, all that is required is a little love and affection.

A new song

I love to sing. Whenever at a sporting event O Canada is played, I sing it proudly. I believe our National Anthem is for all of us to sing, not a performance for a soloist, although I don't mind it being led by a singer, as long as it isn't murdered by trilling variations!

I also love to sing when I go to Church. The old familiar hymns get the best response from the congregation and me. I suppose that's because we know them the best, so we're sure of the next notes, and can sing out with enthusiasm. Many people know the words by memory too.

In fact it's quite amazing how dementia sufferers in a care home service may remember little else, but they can and do sing hymns from what must be a special place where those memories are stored and available!

However, choruses and new hymns, and praise teams bring new music to our worship.

Often they are learned by repetition rather than note by note, with words on a screen rather than lines of music in a book. And even more often, they are met with sour faces and "I don't like its". People shy away from the new songs and are reluctant to even try. Oh how we resist change and are suspicious, even afraid of whatever's new.

It's kind of enlightening then to read what Psalm 96 says: "Sing to the Lord a new song!

Sing to the Lord all the earth!" Even those who insist that they can't sing are invited to: "Make a joyful noise, or, shout for joy to the Lord" Enthusiasm and joy are more pleasing to God, it seems, than the quality of the singing! We need to let go of our reluctance to change and learn those new songs. That's the only way they can become old favourites!

titions; young adults and older folk. Like me, some use canes or walkers but in contrast, some adults whose heads are adorned with snow white hair are like the neighbour - swift as deer. The most important thing, though, is that we're all going at our own pace, all doing our best.

Trucking along at my best pace, I and my cane are slowly increasing the number of times we circle the track and I'm feeling pretty good about it. Having said that, I have to remind myself that mobility challenges mean that I'll never be able to whiz around the oval in the way that I see young people run; learning how to get out of their way, given the number of times they pass me in any given lap, is a major accomplishment.

May clay critter village

Weyburn and area students in Kindergarten through Grade eight have been working with instructor Terry Creurer to create unique, one-of-a-kind critters made of clay. There are over 400 critters in the village that is currently on display until June 12 at the Signal Hill Art Gallery.

New ways to help Humane Society The Weyburn Humane Society has come up with a few new ways to make donating easier.

The Humane Society is currently accepting Canadian Tire money which will aid in the purchase of some much needed summer equipment such as a weed trimmer and lawn mower. In addition, to currently accepting the Canadian Tire money, residents with a smart phone can now raise money for the local organization by downloading an app called "ResQwalk".

Each week ResQwalk announces a donation pool (e.g. $2,500) and in order for a rescue to receive donations from the pool, its supporters simply need to check-in to the app when they go for a walk. The more you walk, the more you can raise for the Humane Society.

Trail Days set for June 13 The City of Weyburn is busy planning and preparing for the annual event which is held at River Park. On June 13, residents are invited to enjoy in the festivities which are being held between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m at the gazebo in the park.

Entry to the event is free and includes a free hotdog lunch, being hosted by the Rotary Club of Weyburn. Entertainment for the afternoon includes performances by four dance groups, including dancers from Marleys Dance Effex, Lalita Maya Belly Dancing, the Dance Zone and the Ukrainian Dance Club.

The park also has a playground and groomed walking trails for attendees to enjoy.

Trails throughout the city parks are ready for residents to use.

Police respond to hit and runs/collisions On May 24, at about 2:55 p.m., the Weyburn Police Service received a complaint of an assault in progress inside a vehicle. The vehicle was located and it appears that a 22 year-old male and a 19 year-old female were having a domestic dispute. The victim did not wish to have police involved in the matter.

On May 23, as the result of a parking complaint, a suspect vehicle was located and a 34 year-old Alberta male was arrested and charged with driving while over .08.

Also on May 23, members of the Weyburn Police Service were dispatched to a re-

port of a two vehicle collision on Third Street S.E. and Eight Avenue S.E. As the result of the investigation, a 20 year-old female has been charged under the Traffic Safety Act with proceeding before safe.

Further on May 23, the Weyburn PS responded to a complaint of a family domestic dispute. As the result, a 19 year-old female victim was assisted to leave the residence.

On May 22, the Weyburn PS received a report of mischief done to a building on the east side of the city. It appears that someone gained access to the roof of the

building and caused minor damage to the roof mounted heating/cooling system. The matter is still under investigation. If you have any information on this file, please contact the Weyburn PS or Crime Stoppers.

Also on May 22, at about 8 p.m., the Weyburn Police Service received a complaint from a 47 year-old male victim that had been assaulted while at a local pub. The 51 year-old male suspect was later located, arrested and charges with assault causing bodily harm. He will be making a court appearance. The victim was taken to the Weyburn

On May 21, the Weyburn PS received a report of a hit and run vehicle collision at the Weyburn Comp. School parking lot. A vehicle, while parked there, sustained damage to the rear lift gate and bumper area. Anyone having information about this incident is asked to contact the Weyburn Police Service or Crimestoppers.

On May 20, the Weyburn PS received a complaint of a hit and run vehicle collision at Fifth Street N.E. and Souris Avenue. The suspect vehicle is described as a purple car driven by an elderly person who is very small in stature. Anyone having information about this incident or who may be able to identify the vehicle is asked to contact the Weyburn Police Service, or Crime Stoppers.

Also on May 20, at about 9:10 p.m., the Weyburn Police Service were dispatched to a report of a dumpster fire.

As the result of the investigation, police identified a 17 year-old female as having accidentally started the fire by carelessly throwing a lit cigarette into the dumpster.

Further on May 20, in a matter relating to the above, the Weyburn PS located and stopped a suspect vehicle. The driver, an 18 year-old female, was found to be in possession of marijuana and was charged accordingly.

In what police believe is an unrelated matter, a second fire was called in at about 9:40 p.m. This was a grass fire in the area between the radio towers on South Hill and the city dump. There is no indication it was suspicious in

nature and was likely due also to a carelessly discarded cigarette. We urge all people to be diligent in making sure cigarettes are fully extinguished before disposing of them.

On May 19, the Weyburn PS were dispatched to a domestic dispute at a residence.

The dispute centered around the 17 year-old son's 18 yearold girlfriend being asked to move from the residence by the boy's mother. The matter was mediated without any further police involvement.

Also on May 19, the Weyburn PS were dispatched to a report of a vehicle having struck a business. The investigation showed that a 47 year-

old male, while parking his vehicle in a private parking lot, accidentally accelerated causing the vehicle to bounce over a parking barricade and collide with the building causing moderate damage. There were no injuries.

Further on May 19, the Weybun PS received a report that a person had been receiving parking tickets for a plate she no longer had possession of. The investigation showed that the owner sold a vehicle to a scrap dealer and failed to remove the plate. It is an offence under the Traffic Safety Act to not remove a license plate upon sale or disposal of the vehicle.

(May 26, 2015 CALGARY, ALBERTA) - Crescent Point Energy Corp. ("Crescent Point" or the "Company") (TSX and NYSE: CPG) is pleased to announce that it has entered into an arrangement agreement (the "Legacy Arrangement") to acquire all of the issued and outstanding shares of Legacy Oil + Gas Inc. ("Legacy").

Legacy is a publicly-traded, light oil-weighted producer with approximately 22,000 boe/d of high-netback production, of which more than 15,000 boe/d is from conventional and unconventional plays in Crescent Point's core southeast Saskatchewan, Manitoba and North Dakota areas. The assets to be acquired (the "Legacy Assets") include approximately 1,000 net sections of land, of which approximately 525 net sections are in southeast Saskatchewan. The southeast Saskatchewan lands include approximately 200 net sections in the emerging and highly-economic Midale light oil resource play. Total consideration for the Legacy Arrangement is approximately $1.53 billion, comprised of approximately 18.97 million Crescent Point common shares and the assumption of approximately $967 million of net debt, estimated as at the time of closing and inclusive of transaction costs.

"The Legacy acquisition is aligned with our strategy of acquiring large oil-in-place pools with low current recovery factors," said Scott Saxberg, president and CEO of Crescent Point. "This acquisition improves the long-term sustainability of our business model and our dividend not only through financial accretion and a lower payout ratio, but through the addition of a mix of assets with significant growth potential, low-decline rates and waterflood potential. The low-cost, high-return Midale assets add yet another layer of top-quartile locations to our drilling inventory and provide us with additional operational flexibility."

Assuming the successful completion of the Legacy Arrangement on or about June 30, 2015, Crescent Point is upwardly revising its 2015 guidance for production and capital expenditures. The Company's 2015 average daily production rate is expected to increase by approximately 6.6 percent to 162,500 boe/d from 152,500 boe/d, which is based on average second half 2015 production of approximately 20,000 boe/d from the Legacy Assets. Crescent Point is also acquiring attractive conventional and unconventional assets, including Legacy's Alberta assets, which are free cash flow positive with low decline rates and large oil-in-place.

Crescent Point is one of Canada's largest light and medium oil producers, with an annual dividend of CDN$2.76 per share. Crescent Point shares are traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange and New York Stock Exchange, both under the symbol CPG.

What to do in an emergency If someone becomes unconscious and stops breathing at work, does everyone know what is expected of them? Not having a safety plan at work may be detrimental to a person's life. First Aid training and preparing a proper emergency plan will assist in providing the best emergency care.

Some considerations for creating a Safety Plan for your workplace: 1. Know the Occupational Health and Safety requirements for your organization by referring to the Saskatchewan Occupational Health and Safety Act. Each work site has different requirements based on number of workers, distance from medical

facilities, and if the working environment is isolated.

A minimum requirement for all sites is a first aid kit, a first aid manual, a register, and emergency information. For help determining requirements, contact your local St. John Ambulance office.

2. Focus on incident prevention. Having plans in place to keep employees and customers safe at all times will help avoid situations where first aid is needed. Having people in your office trained in first aid will also lessen the severity of incidents that do happen.

3. Know how to take charge in an emergency situation. The quicker the fallen worker is treated, the

Although last winter wasn’t too bad (certainly not as brutal as the one before), I’m sure we’ve all had quite enough of that cycle of hot-cold, hot-cold that we went through for awhile. I don’t want to jinx anything but I think we can feel confident that the warmer weather is here to stay.

The arrival of spring means that it’s time for us to start getting the city in shape for visitors and for all of us to enjoy.

Earlier in May, we got this kicked off with Mayor’s Spring Clean-Up Day. This event saw City Council and City Hall employees helping to clean up the downtown area, doing chores such as picking garbage, sweeping sidewalks and preparing flower beds.

Of course, Spring Clean-Up Day was just a symbolic first step. There’s no way we could clean up the whole city in one day. The process of keeping our city attractive is ongoing and we all have a part to play.

The arrival of spring also means that we can start enjoying all the natural beauty surrounding our city. On June 13, we will be celebrating International Trails Day by holding a barbecue at River Park. In addition to the food, there will also be entertainment provided by local dancers from Lalita Maya Belly Dancing, Marley's Dance Effex, The Dance Zone and the Ukranian Dance Club. The festivities will run from 1-3 p.m. and we would love to see everyone come out to enjoy the fun.

Looking further ahead into the summer, we look forward this year to unveiling the new Pioneer Woman statue. Around the time that the Tommy Douglas statue was unveiled, some people around town noticed that we have very little – if anything – to commemorate the many women who helped build Weyburn. The problem was: to whom should we dedicate the statue? It is hard to come up with a single identifiable historic figure. In pioneer times, the role of women was so routinely ignored that we have few records of the names of our female pioneers or their accomplishments.

For this reason, a volunteer committee came together with the idea of building a statue to commemorate pioneer women in general. I would like to thank long-time community volunteer Ross McMurtry for his vision and dedication in driving this project forward as well as all the volunteer committee members who worked so hard to raise money for it.

The City is proud to support the project by offering land for the statue cite. We look forward to continuing to work with the volunteer committee to bring the project to completion.

On a more serious note, there have been a number of safety concerns raised about the 5th and King Street area.

This intersection, which is right on the way out of town, is in both a high school and elementary school zone. The City and the police will be monitoring this area over the summer to establish effective speed limits that will help keep our children safe. I would like to ask the public for their cooperation with this monitoring project.

Speaking of safety, the warmer weather inspires us all to do more outdoor activities – camping, hiking, boating and so on. These all have many healthy benefits but they each also have a number of risks that should be kept in mind.

You’ll hear this message many times over the summer but let me be the first to say – play safe!

Mini Blacks bring home gold

Brynna Spence gets ready to run the 200m race at the district track and field meet held at Weyburn Comprehensive High School on May 27.

The U10 boys Mini Black Devils participated in the Swift Current Soccerfest on May 23 and 24. With two wins and a tie during the round robin, the boys advanced to the gold medal game. When the final game resulted in a 0-0 tie in regulation and overtime never solved anything, the team went on to take gold in a shootout beating Swift Current by a score of 1-0.
