Weyburn Quota honours exceptional women The Quota International Weyburn Women of the Year awards luncheon was held on March 30 at McKenna Hall.

The afternoon began with a catered meal and door prizes.

Quota member, Heather Sidloski, served as the emcee for the awards ceremony, which featured Dr. Dale Dewar as guest speaker.

Dewar is a rural doctor from Wynyard, Saskatchewan who is an international human rights activist, the executive director of Physicians for Global Survival and the Chair of the International Society of Rural Physicians of Canada.

Dewar's decision to become a physician was made as a young girl in 1951, after receiving medical treatment for her hand that piqued her interest in the medical profession. She decided that she could accomplish this and her journey began

as a female doctor. Dewar shared stories and her wisdom served as inspiration for all the women in attendance at the luncheon.

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of the Women of the Year awards. Jolene Tuchscherer presented the Weyburn Credit Union Workplace Award to Jacquie Williams. The Access Communications Exceptional Entrepreneur Award was presented by Wendy Hoffart to Kathy Erickson.

Michael Hoffman presented the Investors Group Young Woman of Distinction Award to April MacMillan. The final award, the M.Isabelle Butters Quota International of Weyburn Community Service Award, was presented by Isabelle Butters to Deana Mainil. Congratulations to all of the nominees and recipients of the 2015 Women of the Year Awards.

Download for a CURE Local singer/musician Tenille Arts has teamed up with Cystic Fibrosis Canada and will be releasing a song on iTunes. “Breathe” will be available for download on April 14, with 100% of all proceeds going towards Cystic Fibrosis research.

Members of the Weyburn KidSport committee were on hand at the Leisure Centre to receive a donation from Norman and Shirley Mondor on March 31. The Mondors are donating a total of $10,000.00 to KidSport in memory of their grandson, Matthew Mondor. Matthew, who loved and was active in sports, lost his life in a car accident in 2013. The donation will be made over five years, in $2,000.00 increments, and will ensure that children in the Weyburn area are able to participate in sports, regardless of their financial situation. Dates set for Art Farm III

Sask. surpasses Alberta in exports

The third annual Art Farm will be held on June 13 from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the van der Breggen acreage.

Art Farm III is a gathering of over 35 artists, exhibiting and selling their work. This is a family event that will include food (a fundraiser for the Weyburn Youth Centre), live music, face painting, kid's activities, horse-drawn wagon rides (weather permitting) as well as art in many mediums. Admission is $2.00, with children under six years admitted free.

Art Farm is an opportunity to expose our local talented artists, while giving the public the chance to view and purchase original works of art. What better venue than the Saskatchewan prairies? With the help of the van der Breggen family and a committee of dedicated artists, we are excited to facilitate this exhibition, which accommodates many artists and guests as well as live music in a rural setting. We have a diverse group of artist friends, both accomplished and emerging. Painters, potters, sculptors, photographers, musicians, performing artists come together to give a market type experience in a casual country atmosphere.

We have partnered with the Kinsman to do a Raffle of four works of art by local artists Max Himsl, Tina Hudson, Abraham van der Breggen, and Simple with a Twist to help cover expenses.

Gather your family and friends to experience a unique shopping atmosphere, have a snack, lunch or supper, witness art being created, music being made amidst our beautiful prairie landscape!

The van der Breggen acreage is located five minutes from Weyburn, south on Highway 35, west (right) at TWP 080, south (left) at the white barn.

'Art Farm' - cultivating a different kind of crop.

Saskatchewan's merchandise exports to countries other than the United States totalled $12.6 billion in 2014, surpassing the $11.9 billion posted by Alberta last year and setting an all-time record for the province.

"We have an amazing export market here in Saskatchewan that has been making steady gains since 2007," Minister responsible for Trade Jeremy Harrison said. "This is a significant achievement and demonstrates the diversity and strength of our economy."

Non-U.S. bound merchandise exports were 36 per cent of total exports in Saskatchewan for 2014, compared to 10 per cent for Alberta.

In 2014, Saskatchewan's total exports were a record $35.1 billion. It was the highest on record and the third consecutive year Saskatchewan set a new record.

Weyburn Comp School news (Submitted) - The basketball season is over with the boys placing fourth at SHSAA provincials (HOOPLA) on March 27 and 28. Congratulations to all four teams for a great season.

The badminton team has been playing in tournaments in preparation for playoffs later on in April and track is organizing to start up.

The dates for the musical have finally been determined with performances on Wednesday, April 29, Friday, May 1, Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3 at the Cugnet Centre. The show on Saturday will have a dinner theater but tickets can also be purchased for the show only (seating in the balcony). On Wednesday

and Friday, the shows are at 7:00 p.m. The dinner theater on May 2 starts with supper at 5:30 p.m. and the May 3 performance is at 2:00 p.m.

Tickets for performances are $12 for adults and $6 for

students with the dinner theater tickets at $40. Tickets will go on sale to the public on Friday, April 10 at Music Craft and will be available at the school on Monday, April 13.

Saskatchewan to restrict tanning bed use by minors

Curves helps out food bank

Saskatchewan plans to develop regulations that will prohibit the use of indoor tanning beds by youth under 18 years of age.

The regulations are expected to be finalized in time for implementation in summer 2015.

"Our government's goal is to protect the health of Saskatchewan residents," Health Minister Dustin Duncan said. "Our young people are particularly vulnerable to the effects of indoor tanning, and this is one way we can help them lower their risk of melanoma."

Duncan stated that the province has learned much by carefully monitoring developments on the issue across the country, and that Saskatchewan's regulations will be crafted to take other jurisdictions' experiences into consideration.

"We have made every effort to be thoughtful about this issue, to gather as much information as possible, and to be aware of different perspectives before proceeding," Duncan said.

The province will continue to support public education efforts aimed at raising awareness of the risks of indoor tanning, and encouraging people to make healthy lifestyle choices.

Schindel appointed to Stoughton Housing Authority Hazel Schindel has been appointed to the Stoughton Housing Authority Board of Directors. Other members of the board of directors include Virginia Deren, Diena Fisher, Gloria Knous and Peter Piper. Piper is the chairperson.

The Stoughton Housing Authority is a community-based organization that provides daily management of 41 housing units constructed and operated under the terms of a federal provincial municipal cost sharing agreement.

Social Services Minister, Donna Harpauer, paid tribute to the volunteers who manage the social housing projects in their community. "This local hands-on approach ensures that the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation responds effectively to the needs of each community."

Saskatchewan has a network of 260 housing authorities and more than 1,400 volunteer members who assist with management of housing units throughout the province for seniors, low income families and persons with disabilities.

Persons interested in volunteering to serve on the board of directors for the Stoughton Housing Authority are encouraged to contact the mayor of Stoughton. A local nominating committee recommends board members.

Applications for accommodation are available from the manager of the Stoughton Housing Authority.

Curves International of Weyburn owner, Sharon Leguee, partnered with the local Salvation Army and collected 300 lbs. of groceries for the Food Bank. The donation was part of a food drive that the local Curves location promoted during the month of March.

Protect your elm trees: Don't prune from April 1 - August 31 To reduce the risk of Dutch elm disease (DED), pruning of elm trees will once again be prohibited throughout Saskatchewan from April 1 to August 31.

Elm bark beetles that spread the disease are most active during this time of year. Fresh cuts from pruning can attract the insects and increase the chance of a DED infection.

Proper elm tree pruning outside the annual ban period helps keep trees healthy and better able to resist all diseases, including DED. Removing dead and dying elm wood through pruning also helps reduce places for beetles

Police kept busy with domestic situations On March 28, the Weyburn Police Service were called to a residence to remove an unwanted guest. Upon arrival, the police learned that there had been a party earlier and when it concluded, the homeowner did not want the person to remain for the night. This resulted in a physical confrontation. A 23 year-old male person was arrested for mischief and lodged in cells.

On March 27, while on patrol, a member of the Weyburn Police Service saw an 18 year-old male standing beside a vehicle at a pub and observed him to be urinating. The person was asked to approach the patrol vehicle but ran away. The person was later located and fled on foot again resulting in a footchase. The accused was caught up to during the chase and then became aggressive towards the officer.

The accused was taken into custody without incident and was lodged in cells. He was charged pursuant to the Littering Bylaw for urinating in public. The investigation into possible criminal charges is still ongoing.

to breed, and curbs their populations. Throughout the year, including during the ban period, DED-infected elms should be removed promptly.

Provincial regulations require commercial pruners of elm trees to complete a recognized training program or be under the supervision of someone who has. Improper pruning techniques can spread many tree diseases, including DED. Because of the risk of spreading DED, transporting or storing elm firewood is illegal. Elm wood must be disposed of promptly, using the method and locations chosen by each municipality.

In the early morning hours of March 27, the Weyburn PS were called regarding a possible domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, it was learned that a 23 year-old male was attempting to get the 41 year-old female occupant of an apartment to let him in, thus causing a disturbance. The male was given a ride home without incident.

On March 27, the Weyburn Police Service received calls regarding a group of people going from house/business to business providing entertainment then requesting money.

There are no Bylaw provisions governing this type of activity.

Homeowners and business people, however, do have the authority to request that these people not be in their business or home. If you do decide to donate in a situation like this it is certainly 'buyer beware'.

On March 26, the Weyburn PS received a request to remove an unwanted houseguest. A 45 year-old male was removed without incident from the residence and given a ride to his residence.

Also on March 26, the Weyburn PS assisted the Weyburn RCMP at a roll-over involving a semi hauling canola.

On March 25, the Weyburn Police Service received a report of a domestic assault involving a father and a child. As the result of the investigation, the 33 year-old male has been charged with assault. An Emergency Intervention Order was obtained from the court and the male has been removed from the residence pending the outcome in court.

On March 24, while on routine patrol Members of the Weyburn PS observed a vehicle driving erratically. It was subsequently stopped and the driver found to be under the influence of alcohol. A 49 year-old male has been charged with Impaired Driving and will be making a court appearance.

On March 23, the Weyburn PS received a complaint about an assault having happened at a construction site. Investigation revealed that a disgruntled former employee returned, resulting in a confrontation with the 26 year-old victim. The other employees at the scene were able to intervene stopping the assault. A 31 year-old male was later arrested and has been charged with assault. He was released pending court and is on a 'no contact' condition with the victim.

By Helen Waller The other morning, I was busy running frantically (which is more like a brisk walk, to be honest). I was doing as many mothers do. Getting everything ready for the day. It looked like this: Find the youngest a pair of SOCKS without holes, getting my son his BREAKFAST and telling my daughter it was time to "GET UP". Five minutes later, the cycle continued. I was now finding the youngest a pair of JEANS without holes, getting the other one his LUNCH and telling my daughter again to "GET UP", etc. You get the idea. My youngest does not seem to own a piece of clothing without holes, another can't seem to find anything to eat and my daughter loves the snooze button just about as much as she likes Nash Grier. (Remember your teenage heartthrob?)

One thing was clear. I no longer felt sorry for my husband who left for the farm at 6:00 a.m. that morning. In fact, I applaud him. That man is genius.

So, what's a gal to do? Looks like I had to reign in this situation. I told the kids that I was going to start needing a little more help around the house. I simply couldn't do everything and maintain the little bit of sanity that I had left. The look of panic on their faces said it all.

One thought they were going to go to school in air-conditioned clothes, one thought they were never going to eat again and well, my daughter probably would miss the bus every morning for the rest of her high school years. (Unless of course, Nash Grier decided to take our bus route up.)

So, a new plan was set. You have heard the saying “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” Well, this modern day mom was about to make use of some age-old wisdom. My version was more like “Give a child a lunch, feed him for the day; teach the child to make his own lunch and they will feed themselves right through the rest of school.”

So, I taught one where to find clothes that had not made it back to his dresser drawers.

(That permanent laundry basket on top of the dryer.) I taught the other one where to find the fridge in our house. Lastly, I showed my daughter the latest, greatest gadget on her phone. It is called an alarm clock. (Imagine the eye roll!)

A few mornings have passed. Everyone has made it to school, clothed, fed and on time. I am feeling like the genuis now!

By Linda Wegner There's a lot happening around our house this week and emotions are mixed. Our son recently accepted a new out-of-province position that's definitely a step up in his career. While we're rejoicing with him and his wife, we're already feeling their absence from our part of the world. Their move impacts a lot of people in this community but nothing compared to the families of those 150 people who lost their lives in this week's horrific Germanwings Flight 9525 plane crash.

Then there's the loss of jobs associated with the triumphant entry followed by the tailbetween-the-legs exit of major retailers to and from the U.S. It's left some rejoicing, others lamenting the loss of employment and shopping options.

A drop in oil prices causes stock market to shudder, while massive layoffs create much head scratching among consumers as to why prices at the gas pump are on the way back up. Those things fall into the category of material and emotional security and they can leave us reeling, knowing that life might never be the same.

Be they personal, regional or global, change is never easy, not even when those changes are for the good. Anxiety, fear of the future and the ever-present rumour mill (that sometimes is not offset by effective communication) make the uncertainty of change even more challenging.

Let's face it, the familiar is often more comfortable, even when the familiar is far from perfect.

Former President John F. Kennedy said this: "Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or the present are certain to miss the future."

How wonderful to know we serve a God who never changes, who's faithfulness ensures we can look to our future and our present with blessed confidence.

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever." Hebrews 13:8

Just do it I love the way Jesus did his ministry on this earth. The Bible says - How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. The Bible records the incident of Jesus teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath, and there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years and bent over and could in no way raise herself up. What was Jesus response to this woman's helplessness and pain?

Did he just pass her by? Did he console her with flowery language? Did he condemn her as the religious folks of that day? No, the Bible says when Jesus saw her, he stopped his teaching, He called her to him and said to her -"Woman you are loosed from your infirmity" Friends because of God's anointing on Jesus, He just did what God would want him to do. The religious leader of the synagogue was upset that this woman had received her healing

by Jesus on the sabbath. You'd think the temple rulers would have been rejoicing at what Jesus had done. But , no ! they were angry because He'd done it on the wrong day. Jesus rebuked them for their insensitivity and said- Hypocrite ! does not each of you on the Sabbath loose his ox or donkey from the stall, and lead it away to water it ? So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound- think of it- for eighteen yeras, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath ?

It is good to remember that next time someone tries to get you or me sidetracked into a religious debate about healing or deliverance, we don't have to get all hung up, but freely minister to others what we ourselves have received from God. In simple words - Just do it!

Applications now being accepted for accessibility projects Ed Komarnicki, Member of Parliament for SourisMoose Mountain, on behalf of the Honourable Candice Bergen, Minister of State for Social Development, is encouraging local organizations to submit their projects for consideration under the newly launched Enabling Accessibility Fund (EAF) Call for Proposals.

Organizations are encouraged to apply for funding for projects that will help improve accessibility in community facilities. The deadline for submissions is April 27, 2015. Proposals can involve a wide variety of projects; however priority will be given to projects that enhance access for children with disabilities (e.g. playgrounds and recreational facilities), veterans with disabilities or seniors with disabilities.

It is important to note that municipalities are also eligible to apply in support of the first priority (access for children with disabilities) since a large number of recreational facilities are under their management. As such, all municipalities, irrespective of size, have been included as eligible recipients under this priority only and are strongly encouraged to apply.

Over 11 million in funding is available through this year's call for proposals. All applications are reviewed against eligibility criteria, call for proposal requirements and program objectives.

Society warns of spring ice melt dangers

Easy moves Kathy Erickson instructs the aquasize class titled "Easy Moves" at the Weyburn Leisure Centre on March 31. Erickson was this year’s winner of the Access Communications Exceptional Entrepreneur Award at the Women of the Year Awards.

With the latest heavy snowfall and warmer temperatures on the way, the Lifesaving Society (Saskatchewan Branch) wants to remind everyone to exercise caution around bodies of water and stay off the ice.

"Ice on any body of water is very unstable during the spring melt, and the water is still very cold, increasing the risk for hypothermia, so it is important that everyone, including animals, stay off the ice," says Shelby Rushton, CEO of the Lifesaving Society.

"Falling through the ice is often a factor in drowning incidents, and it's one that is easily prevented by taking some extra precautions and staying away from and off the ice."

If someone does fall through thin ice, don't panic and don't get too close to the hole or you may fall in as well. Call for help, and then offer assistance from a distance using encouragement and a long assist - a rope, ladder, hockey stick, etc. If there is a lifejacket or buoyant object around, the rescuer should put it on to protect themselves in case they fall in, too.

When the victim grabs the assist, pull gently to ease him or her out of the water. Then, tell the person to crawl along the ice with their feet spread out wide. After helping the victim to safety, approach and remove the person's wet clothing when dry clothes or blankets are available, and seek emergency assistance, if necessary. Always remember to reach or throw, but don't go.

The Society also cautions drivers to be cautious on roadways during icy conditions. "There have been too many submerged vehicle-related incidents of late causing fatalities. Drivers need to slow down in snowy or icy conditions to prevent their vehicle from leaving the road and ending up in a water-filled ditch or large body of water such as a river or dugout."

Weyburn wrestlers bring home medals Archery Club to host 3D Fun Shoot The Weyburn Wildlife Federation Archery Club will be hosting an Indoor 3D Fun Shoot on April 11 starting at 9:00 a.m.

The event will take place at the indoor range located in Goodwater (about a 30 minutes south of Weyburn).

Registration is $40 for a family, $20 for adults, 17 and under $10 and under 10 is free. There will be burgers and pop available and a 50/50 draw.

The Weyburn Cobra Wrestling Club sent ten wrestlers to the Freshie-Bantam Provincial Championships in Prince Albert on March 28.

Weyburn Wrestlers came away with five gold, three silver and one bronze medal.

Gold medals were awarded to: Allie Gawryluik in the Peewee Female 47-52 kg division; Faith Gryde - Peewee Female 55-56 kg division; Makena Ricard - Peewee Female 63-68 kg division; Frankie Gawryluik

- Bantam Female 55-60 kg division and Eric Fleming - Peewee Male 37-39 kg division.

Silver medals went to: Raiden Kiraly - Freshie Male 31-32 kg division; Billy Franklin - Novice Male 33-36 kg division and Dawson Runge - Bantam Male 35-36 kg division.

Kaelyn Bert picked up a bronze medal in the Peewee Female 34-34 kg class.

Karver Heustis placed fourth in the Novice Male 2627 kg division.

On March 29, the Weyburn Cobra Wrestling Club sent eight of their Cadet and Juvenile wrestlers to the Provincial Championships in Saskatoon. Weyburn came home with six medals from the event, Katelyn Franklin brought home a gold medal in the Cadet FW 60 kg division.

Silver medals went to: Aaron Hemphill in the Cadet FS 50 kg division; Nathan Bradley in the Cadet FS 115 kg

division and Braydon Johnston in the Juvenile FS 76 kg division.

Bronze medals went to: Cadet FS 63 kg - Tyler Fleming and Juvenile FS 69 kg Braydon Roberts.

Ryan Verbeem placed fourth in the Cadet FS 69 kg division while Carter Barrett finished fifth in the Cadet FS 63 kg division.
