Barra MacNeils set to perform

Nominees announced

The Barra MacNeils, a legendary Celtic musical group, who have traveled extensively for nearly three decades, will bring their music to Weyburn. The Weyburn Concert Series is pleased to present this reknown group to perform at the Cugnet Centre on April 9 at 7:30 p.m.

The native Cape Breton group has deep roots in Celtic music, culture, dance, language and history. The MacNeils consist of 6 siblings: Kyle, Lucy, Sheumas, Stewart, Boyd and Jamie Gatti. As a group, the MacNeil siblings are widely regarded as one of the greatest live "Celtic" concerts in the word. The live concert experience brings more to the stage than most typical live acts. The group can boast multiple lead vocalists, beautiful sibling harmonies, dancing, storytelling and experience on a wide range of instruments.

Jayda Van Betuw and April MacMillan are nominated in the Young Women of Distinction category. Lauren Peterson and Kathy Erickson are nominated in the Entrepreneur of Excellence category. Jacquie Williams, Felecia Watson, Krista Hayward, Colleen Morrice and Sharon Mulhall have been nominated in the Workplace Excellence Award. The last award is the M. Isabelle Butters community service award and has Deana Mainil and Kathryn Groshong as nominees. The Women of the Year awards will be presented at a luncheon on March 30, being held at the McKenna Hall.

last week, including a confirmation of capital funding for the new College Campus in Weyburn, increased funding for more Adult Basic Education (ABE) seats, and increased funding for the Canada-Saskatchewan Job Grant, which helps employers train staff for new or better positions. The Budget also provided a one per cent operating funding increase for our College.

"This budget demonstrates the Province's com-

mitment to the work of our College. We are grateful for the trust and confidence the Province is placing in us to continue delivering training and education programming that develops the labour force, " said Dion McGrath, President and CEO of Southeast College.

"We are pleased to see that the Government recognizes the important role the college plays in providing learners and employers access to post-secondary education

and training close to home."

The Provincial Budget also continues support for post-secondary education by supporting scholarship programs, including Saskatchewan Innovation and Opportunity Scholarships (SIOS), which match funds raised by Southeast College.

Highlights from the 2015 Provincial Budget for Southeast College: • $10.6 M in capital project funding for the new, expanded Weyburn Campus • $77 K for matching

Scholarships • An increase of $42 K (7%)for increase Adult Education seats • An increase of $27 K (2%) for increased Skills Training capacity • Funding for expanded internet bandwidth at all of the College's locations "Being a part of southeast region of the province can come with its own unique challenges," said McGrath, "but the Government clearly recognizes that there is a strong need for training and education that can be delivered right here at home."

Construction on the new Weyburn Campus is already well underway and when the building opens, it will house all of the college's programs in Weyburn as well as the administrative offices.

Crop insurance deadline approaches The Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation (SCIC) is reminding producers to review the choices and options available for 2015 and to enrol, renew, or make any adjustments or changes to their coverage by March 31, 2015.

As Saskatchewan farmers adapt their operations to remain successful, SCIC is also evolving its Crop Insurance Program; providing greater f lexibility and a wider range of options so producers can custom build their Crop Insurance coverage. Whether producers are currently in Crop Insurance, have been out of the program for a couple of years or are new to farming, they are encouraged to contact SCIC to find out how to build the coverage to fit their risk protection needs.

For 2015 there is greater choice for the Unseeded Acreage Feature. New coverage levels of $50, $70, $85 and $100 per acre have been created, giving producers choice about coverage for land that is too wet to seed due to excess spring moisture. Other enhancements to the 2015 Crop Insurance Program include adding hemp as an insurable crop and increasing the base grade for oats to a #2CW from a #3CW to reflect the improved quality of oats grown in the province.

The deadline for customers to apply for, make changes to or cancel a Crop Insurance contract is March 31, 2015. Producers who prefer to do their business online are encouraged to use CropConnect where they can review their coverage selections and use the online tools to see what coverage best fits the needs of the operation.

Hospital Foundation pleased with budget announcement

Members of the Weyburn and District Hospital Foundation board met with Health Minister Dustin Duncan at the Provincial Legislative to hear the news of the government funding that has been committed to the new Weyburn Hospital.

(Submitted) The Weyburn and District Hospital Foundation (WDHF) celebrate the announcement of $500,000 funding for a new hospital for Weyburn. Minister Dustin Duncan invited the WDHF Board to be in attendance at the Provincial Legislative to hear the exciting news read in the 2015 Budget presentation. This planning will form the foundation of information from which the government will proceed with design, location, and construction of a new Weyburn and District Hospital.

Weyburn Police Service investigate a number of thefts On March 22, the Weyburn Police Service received a complaint of a tool box full of tools being stolen sometime over the weekend from the back of a parked truck. The truck had been parked in a parking lot in the east side of the city. There are no suspects at this time and the incident remains under investigation.

On March 20, the Weyburn Police Service was requested to be on the look-out for a suspect vehicle that was related to a theft and an assault with a weapon which had occurred earlier in Estevan. The suspects, a male and female were believed to be travelling towards Weyburn. A short time later a member of the Weyburn Police Service located the suspect vehicle and conducted a vehicle stop. A 30 year-old male and a 46 year-old female were arrested and transported to the Weyburn Police Service. After further investigation, the female was charged and released on a Promise to Appear for court at a later date, and the male was remanded in custody for a court appearance on March 23. This incident remains under investigation and further charges may be laid.

The Weyburn Police Service responded to a residence after receiving a report of an individual who was making threatening remarks and was possibly armed with a rifle. On arrival, it was learned that one shot had been fired in the residence, although no one had been injured. Police arrested a 63 year-old female who was transported to the Weyburn General Hospital for examination prior to being lodged in cells. The accused was charged with dangerous use of a fire-

On March 17, members of the Weyburn Police Service assisted the RCMP in regard to a complaint of uttering threats after it was learned that the threatening action was to occur in Weyburn. RCMP later located and arrested a 35 year-old male who was remanded in custody to appear in court later this month.

The Weyburn Police Service is investigating the theft of a number of vehicles over the past week.

On March 16, a black enclosed 30 foot car hauler trailer with Sask. license 192 HIC was stolen from a business in the 1700 block of Ebel Road. It is believed that the trailer was later used in the break and enter and theft of two ATVs

A 1997 Dodge extended cab pickup was stolen from a business on Hunt Street. The vehicle was later recovered by the Weyburn Police Service within the city.

A 2006 Ford F250, dark blue in color with Sask. license 599 HJU, was stolen from a business in the 100 block of East Avenue. This vehicle has since been recovered in Calgary.

All the thefts are believed related. While there are no suspects at this time, it appears that a group of criminals were travelling across southern Saskatchewan.

College students receive $33,000 in scholarships and bursaries Southeast College students enrolled at the Weyburn Campus received $33,018 in scholarships and bursaries at the College's Scholarship Presentation on March 19. The students were surrounded by family, friends, College staff and scholarship donors as they received their awards.

"The scholarships and bursaries we were able to give out today would not be possible without our generous donors," said Dave Harazny, Manager of College Advancement. "With their help, the students will be able to com-

plete their programs without some of the financial strain that can accompany post-secondary education."

Three awards were presented to students in various programs, including Plumbing, Hairstylist, Nursing, Adult Basic Education, and Continuing Care Assistant.

Southeast College scholarships are made possible by donations from the community, and eligible funds are also matched by the Saskatchewan Innovation and Opportunity Scholarship program (SIOS) from the Ministry of Advanced Education. Of the $33,018 awarded in Weyburn, $15,259 was contributed through the SIOS program.

The power of choice

The power of a team

By Helen Waller I recently went on a vacation. It was hot, it was sunny, it was fun, it was.....perfect. We had never been to this particular resort before and only having been one other time on a winter getaway, we really didn't know what to expect. We had taken along three teenage girls with us (call us crazy) who were experiencing this "hot holiday" thing for the first time. Their first meal at the resort felt more like a last supper. The food was different than what everyone was used to and the girls figured that they would probably never eat again. They even tossed around the word starvation (teenage girls after all, do have a flair for the dramatic). The fries didn't taste the same as ours, the steak wasn't the same as what Dad barbeques in the summer and there was definitely not a Tim Horton's drive thru. So panic set in, or hunger, not sure, probably a bit of both. People do strange things when they are hungry (ever see a two-year-old, waiting for their food in a restaurant?).

Well now, imagine three teenage girls with low blood sugar. They headed back to the room and proceeded to eat the seven days worth of snacks they had packed in less than 24 hours.

My daughter swears her friend had a tear in her eye when she ate the last olive in the jar she had brought along. Our teenagers were clearly not handling this well. This was going to be a long week.

So, I decided to give them an idea to chew on. We had two options. We could spend our time focusing on what wasn't right or we could spend our time focusing on what was. The choice was theirs and when they decided to take a second look at the situation, the experience was a completely different one.

Nothing in that buffet had changed from the day before but suddenly, all sorts of great food like grilled chicken, fish, and rice were on their plates. Not only had they found more than enough food that was tasty, but they found an appreciation for how lucky they were to have all of that food to choose from in the first place. The power of one choice. The choice to look at the positive rather than the negative.

It made me think. Life is a lot like that buffet. There is always plenty to choose from. A wide variety, ready for the taking. The choice is yours as to what you put on your plate. You can fill it with things you don't like the taste of and spend your time pushing it around with your fork, complaining about it, or you can go grab a new plate. Look for the things you do like, fill your plate, sit down and say Grace.

Though an old adage it remains a foundational principle and one of the most important things I have learned in life and in work. When I dared to launch my business it was without the benefit of formal training in administration or economics but I am convinced that those words of wisdom were a major reason for the success of my small business. More accurately, that advice has repeatedly proven itself to be a god-send.

First, there were several times when determination and at times, desperation, to see my company flourish resulted in my biting off more than I was capable of chewing. I quickly learned that the formula for failure included assuming I knew enough or could acquire enough knowledge prior to beginning the job. That's when those words kicked in and I was able to seek out highly skilled people who were willing to work with me.

Not only have I reaped the benefits of my team's expertise, I also learned that by listening, including and showing appreciation for their opinions, our working relationships were cordial and have resulted in long-lasting friendships.

Last but far from least I continue to benefit from the wisdom and experience of others. Not only do they provide insight into new and existing opportunities while channelling my innate enthusiasm into realistic ventures, I have sources to turn to when I am in need of advice.

"He will be very gracious to you at the sound of your cry. When He hears it He will answer you. " (Isaiah 30:19) In every area of our lives, let's not be afraid to ask for counsel… and then listen to it.

Who wrote this script?

Probably no one is very happy about the world events that push their way to the forefront on a daily basis. Police shootings (in both directions), militant extremist attacks and invasions into neighboring nations grab the spotlight to make us wonder what playwright created a script of such unrest. Will heroes emerge to sweep away the terrorists? Will the plea for negotiated settlements by those with cooler heads gathered around tables of compromise bring more peaceful solutions to these conflicts? Or will the final curtain be drawn ending all the turmoil once and for all with… well… the end.

The answer is in the heart of God to be unfolded in His time and means. One thing Christians know with certainty is that at the center of the answer lies the Anointed One, Jesus Christ. Some believe that the path to peace on earth is the conversion of people to the gracefilled teachings of Jesus. Many point to the vividly drawn images in Bible prophecy and interpret some worldwide apocalypse here on our troubled led by Jesus. Others look beyond all of that to the hope of an eternal home in the courts of their Creator and Lord. Despite all that variety, at the end of the day the solution for Christians will always be in Christ.

The prophet Isaiah seemed to know this several hundred years before Jesus came to earth in the flesh. In the 52nd chapter of Isaiah's prophecy in the Bible we read, "The Lord has bared his holy arm before the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God" (NIV). Then in chapter 53 Isaiah gives a beautiful description of the Christ who would bring this world-wide salvation. But the image drawn here is surprising in that it does not speak of war or destruction or physical might. Instead Jesus is described this way: "He had no form or majesty that we should look at him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by others; a man of suffering and acquainted with infirmity." The chapter goes on in this fashion to describe our Savior. The promise of Jesus is that He will come and enter into our human suffering. Not only so, but he will bear our infirmities, be wounded for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities.

Ultimately the work of Jesus as Savior of the world is to bear the sins of many and make intercession for transgressors. In other words, we may or may not be rescued from plane crashes, diseases, wars or other kinds of turmoil but in Christ Jesus we will be healed of our sins. The greatest of our problems is spiritual, not physical, and for this Jesus came and died and rose again. He ascended on high to rule over an eternal, spiritual kingdom into which He invites us. Will we accept? Or will we let the despair of this world defeat us?

ing up against Meadow Lake, Melfort and Moose Jaw Central for the provincial championship. The girls' team was eliminated from playoffs with a hard fought loss to Regina Sheldon-Williams on March 20. The cheer squad placed second at provincials in Regina on March 21. The WCS band competed in the Regina Optimist band festival last week.

With the end of the basketball season, badminton will ramp up its practices while track and field will start when the weather improves.

The cast has been chosen and an intense practice schedule has been set for the upcoming presentation of "Footloose" on April 30, May 1, 2 and 3rd. The lead parts will be played by the multi-talented Ben Sidloski as Ren McCormick and Keisha Mowchenko, with a beautiful voice and great acting skills, will play Ariel - Rev. Moore's (Mason Charlton) daughter. Ariel's mom will be played by Jade Pelechaty.

Andrea Sidloski will play Rusty and the very popular performer from last year's "Grease", Liam Gordon, will play Williard Hewitt. Plan to attend with a dinner theater on Thursday and other performances on the following three days. Tickets will go on sale around April 10 at the main office and Music Craft.

"Because You Can" is located in the Sun Room at the Weyburn Leisure Centre and offers fitness classes 4 days per week. She continues to hold Aquasize Fitness classes one day a week.

Kathy's dedication, especially to women to improve their selfesteem by encouraging them to take control of their health and improve their fitness level, is unmatched. Many of Kathy's clients are at varying levels, and she has the ability to align with each person's fitness level, gently pushing each one so they feel confident in themselves. Very accepting and understanding of where clients are at, both physically and emotionally, Kathy always makes them feel valued and worthwhile and is always changing her classes to give a total body workout and encourages modifications so that all ages can enjoy fitness. Quota International of Weyburn Investors Group M. Isabelle Butters Community Service Award Young Women of Distinction Award Kathryn Groshong Deana Mainil Nominated by Town & Country Women - Margaret Lukey In 1999, Kathryn and her husband Fred moved from their family farm to Weyburn and she has been actively involved in the community since. Raised in the '30s, she learned at a young age to help wherever she was needed.

A charter member of the Greenville Homemakers in 1948, later named the Saskatchewan Women's Institute, Kathryn received a Merit award in 1980 and life membership in 1984. She has been actively involved with the Town and Country Women for 15 years.

A member of Wheatland Senior Centre for 15 years, Kathryn has played piano for them, assisted in the planning of special programs, contributed to monthly breakfasts and suppers, designed the Christmas Carol sheet, which is still in use and she still plays. She and her husband Fred ran the Kaiser Competition for the Provincial Senior Games held in Weyburn in 2000.

She is an active member of STS-Superannuated Teacher's Association and, dressed in 1940s costume, volunteers as teacher to the old one-room schoolhouse each year at Heritage Village Days, playing "School Days" for groups to sing.

Music has played a big part of Kathryn's life. Learning how to play hymns in Sunday school at the age of 10, she played piano, pump organ and electric organ for 67 years prior to the closure of the Oungre United Church in 2003, and played for many community weddings and funerals. Kathryn is a member of the United Church Choir, plays piano each month at United Church service at Tatagwa Church service, is accompanist for "Altones" Trio, and she and her husband Fred, "The Suntones", regularly play for nursing homes in Weyburn and Midale, Bison Manor and Legion Towers, to name a few.

Kathryn was the last secretary of the Oungre United Church and researched and wrote the History of the Church, the UCW Ladies group and the Sunday school.

Kathryn was awarded the Merit Award for Community Service by the Saskatchewan Department of Continuing Education in 1981, and in November 2012, Fred and Kathryn were recipients of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals for service to their communities.

Kathryn served on the charter board of the Southeast Regional College and helped develop the founding principles when the college was established in 1975 and served on the board for 6 years.

Kathryn is also a member and supporter of the Soo Line Historical Museum, TC Douglas Centre, and Heritage Village.

Kathryn has qualities of leadership, co-operation, resourcefulness, creativity, faith, caring, understanding, helping, hope, respect, courtesy, tenacity and determination that make her an excellent candidate for the M. Isabelle Butters Quota International of Weyburn Community Service Award.

Nominated by the Board of Directors of Triple C Centre One of the special traits that make Deana an amazing person is her love and passion for her family and her community.

When she starts a job or a project, she stays committed until it is complete.

As a teenager, Deana's first foray volunteering was to act as a scrutineer for an election and she has been participating in federal and provincial elections ever since.

While raising her four children, Deana was involved with the activities that her children were involved in: volunteering in the classroom and with fieldtrips for Weyburn Co-operative Playschool; organizing and teaching in-school Learn to Curl Program for Grades 5 & 6 at Queen Elizabeth School; and serving as President and Room Parent for Queen Elizabeth Home & School Association. She displayed compassion, excellent leadership & organizational skills, listened to ideas of others and based decisions on what was best for the students.

Deana has been a volunteer at the Weyburn Rotary Music Festival since 1998, and prior to becoming President in 2006, acted as piano convenor for many years.

Deana helped to organize and participated in the Weyburn Adult Soccer League and assisted in the Saskatchewan Summer Games in 2005.

Deana became a board member of the Triple C Centre Corp. in November, 2011, and willingly assumed the Chair in January, 2012. In addition to the duties of the position, she joined with the other directors in working to obtain the necessary funds and donations to achieve the goal of the inclusion of a community, culture and convention centre to the renovations at the Weyburn Comprehensive School. Deana oversaw and contributed to regular updates of the website, acted as liaison between the committee and the general contractor for the building of the Centre, and cheerfully dealt with questions and concerns from the public.

Deana's positive energy and enthusiasm has been a welcome addition at every WCS concert, sporting event and school function. Since purchasing uniforms for the school choir 9 years ago, Deana has ensured that all choral students are sized with an appropriate shirt, has a numbering system to ensure everything is in order and accounted for throughout the year. With her helpers, she hauls uniforms for all the choirs to various community and out-of-town performances, and after each performance she takes charge of washing, drying, reorganizing and hanging up over 200 shirts!

Deana has recently become a member of the Rotary Club of Weyburn and embodies the international motto of Rotary which is "Service above Self". Embracing it 110%, she volunteered to be on the organizing committee and became a lead in the Chocolate and Nut Fundraiser.

While her volunteer acts are many and varied, what truly makes her an outstanding volunteer is her spirit. Deana has never expected to be acknowledged or recognized for her efforts in our community. That is why she would be the perfect recipient for the M. Isabelle Butters Quota International of Weyburn Community Service Award.

April MacMillan Nominated by Michele Giroux Michele Giroux, April's coworker, describes April as a 'spark' in the workplace for the rest of the 'vintage' employees. Since April began working 3½ years ago, she has had a huge impact in the office at SaskEnergy. She is the first to volunteer, whether it involves travelling to flood relief centres, judging science fairs, collecting for the Weyburn United Way, planting trees or hammering for the Habitat for Humanity home.

She is a leader in her workplace and in her volunteerism. In 2012, April joined Generation Energy-SaskEnergy's Youth network, led by employees 30 and under and has been active since day one. She has been on the Board and instrumental in partnering with the Children's Wish Foundation to grant a child's wish. She has organized many events to support this cause. As well, she has demonstrated that rural engagement is possible and does a great job and involving co-workers and the surrounding community in events such as tree planting and cooking breakfast for volunteers.

April's competitive nature motivates her to do the best she can at whatever task she takes on. She is proficient, organized and pays attention to detail-therefore, when she is overseeing a project it is successful. She is professional, courteous and conscientious of providing good customer care with a smile on her face.

April's co-workers are rooting for her and feel she is deserving of the Investor's Group Young Women of Distinction Award.

Jayda vanBetuw Nominated by Val Wing While presently pursuing a degree in Education, Jayda continues to "make a difference" not only in our community, but is active on the University of Regina's Campus as well.

A valuable and active member of her church community, Jayda has been a Sunday School volunteer, sang in the choir, volunteered at hall banquets, assisted with the hospitality and collection committees and continues to contribute where she can when she is home on weekends.

While attending WCS, Jayda was an active member of the school and described as positive, focused, organized, hard-working and dependable. She was involved with the student council, was a dominant force in the fine arts department, a member of the Girl's Show Choir and the S.T.A.R.S. Show Choir, all while working two part-time jobs, and continuing to maintain her position on the honour role.

As Team Assistant for The Family Place summer program, Jayda has shown great respect for her co-workers and endless patience and love with the children she's responsible for. Her hard work and dedication have resulted in Jayda returning as the Team Leader and Co-ordinator for the Sunny Scholar program this summer. In addition to her employment, Jayda volunteers at many Family Place fundraisers throughout the year.

Jayda's enthusiasm for life and her perseverance in the face of adversity are exceptional for a young woman of her age. She finds the positive in every situation and in every person. She approaches life humbly and has a gift for making others feel special. No challenge is too great and no task is too difficult. Jayda is an excellent choice for Young Woman of the Year.

Weyburn Credit Union Workplace Excellence Award Krista Hayward Nominated by Lois Adam and Brooke Charlton Krista is the Weyburn Credit Union's first female Vice President of Finance. She holds a Degree in Commerce and a Masters of Professional Accounting and chartered professional Accounting designation. Krista oversees the Finance and Corporate Support Departments.

Those that report to her attest that she is supportive, and often their biggest cheerleader and champion of their causes. She has mentored many staff, enabling them to advance their careers in the financial service industry.

As Vice President, she leads the executive and board in matters related to the financial status of the Weyburn Credit Union. She is a forward thinker and her strategic direction has met the challenges that the Credit Union has faced presently as well as into the future.

Her dedication to the Weyburn Credit Union is twofold; not only is she dedicated to the financial state and success of the institution, she is equally committed to the development and personal achievement of the employees and members.

Prior to her current position, she served as the chairperson for the Credit Union Saskatchewan Young Leaders Committee, an initiative designed by the Credit Union to develop leadership and networking opportunities for the next generation of credit union leaders. During her tenure she was instrumental in the creation and organization of the first annual Credit Union Young Leader's Conference.

Krista brings enthusiasm and expertise in the area of finance to the team. Her opinion is immensely valued by her peers and the Board. She is not afraid to take on new challenges or new roles and challenges the status quo.

Krista balances her career with raising children. She is an inspiring example to her two children of what one can achieve with hard work and dedication. She embodies a women leader in business, leading by example, helping out where needed, inspiring others to do their best and a deserving recipient of the Workplace Excellence Award.

Felecia Watson Nominated by Stella Swertz and Janine Schenher Felecia is employed by Sun Country Health Region as the Regional Director of Quality Improvement and Patient Safety.

She has her Bachelor of Commerce degree in Health Care Administration/Human Resources Management and a Master of Science from Department of Community Health and Epidemiology. She also has completed further training in Quality Management.

Felecia's portfolio includes quality improvement, patient safety, risk management, emergency preparedness and patient and family centred care. One of her major responsibilities is to lead the Region in Accreditation. This is no small feat. The process is overwhelming and somewhat daunting for all departments. Felecia has been the Region's 'guiding light' and always ready to teach, coach and facilitate where necessary, leading the Region through a successful accreditation. Felecia's co-workers relate that she manages all her responsibilities in a competent, organized, professional, welcoming and sincere approach and most often with a smile on her face.

Felecia not only serves as a leader for Sun Country Health Region, but also participates as a key resource for other health regions at the provincial level.

She has demonstrated a strong work ethic, often flexing her own personal schedule to meet the needs of the organization, giving 150% of her time and effort. Felecia is known to begin and work through any project with enthusiasm and wholeheartedly. She also demonstrates many ways to show her respect to her colleagues in the workplace daily. She keeps her promises and is encouraging.

One aspect that demonstrates her leadership skills is that she is a good listener and is an excellent communicator. She is reliable, dependable, objective, and her coworkers can trust that she will do what is in the best interest of the individual or organization.

In addition to her work, Felecia balances raising a family of three children as well volunteers her time to her community.

In closing, Felecia is a true team player, she creates a work environment that happily offers assistance and builds trust and respect with all. She demonstrates compassion, integrity, and a giving spirit to each and every individual who crosses her path both at her workplace and in her community. As her employer stated "Felecia is 1 in a million staff, I wish I could clone her. Imitation will have to be the backup plan!"

HATS OFF TO ALL THE WOMEN NOMINATED!

Colleen Morrice Nominated by Pat Anderson and Elise Thomsen Colleen has been the Shelter Manager at the Humane Society since fall of 2014, however, long before that she was performing the duties. In early 2015, a position was created and Colleen is now a paid employee.

Colleen became affiliated with the Humane Society 11 years ago, volunteering to feed kittens, helping with fundraisers and in other ways, as needed.

By 2009, she was a Board Member and increased her volunteering time and efforts. In 2011, when the President was unable to do so, Colleen stepped up to take on more responsibility.

Colleen's dedication for her job extends beyond the 9-5 day.

She has sacrificed many nights of sleep in a cozy bed to keep the animals of Weyburn safe. She has gained a sixth sense and is aware when an animal is not well and when they need to be examined. Despite difficult decisions, she maintains a calm and level head.

Colleen's strong leadership has also elevated the standards at the shelter, improving the cleanliness and efficiency. She ensures the safety of the animals and the public, by developing and ensuring that everyone is following stringent protocols and being meticulous. She brings forward her recommendations to the Board concerning best practice for animal welfare and staff remuneration.

Colleen has also been a wonderful ambassador for the shelter.

She provides knowledge and seeks support for the shelter. In 2009, she combined her two passions and took the animals to the personal care home where she was employed to visit the residents. As well, she has taken shelter pets to schools and fundraisers in Weyburn for people to raise awareness and allow others to meet the animals. Children gain by learning gentle touches and soft, kind words when holding an animal.

She is always aware that fundraising for the shelter is important and is often spearheading such events as the Garage Sale, the recent Pet Adoption promotion event at PetValu and reinitiating the fine option program as a means of revenue for the shelter.

As a Shelter Manager, Colleen's work goes above and beyond what is expected and she is repeatedly improving the lives of those around her, particularly those who have little or no voice.

Pat Anderson and Elise Thomsen, Colleen's nominators truly believe that Colleen deserves recognition for the outstanding job she does.

Jacquie Williams Nominated by CJ Mainil and Tonya Dubiel Her colleagues describe her as the epitome of teaching excellence. She is a tireless and committed educator and works hard to ensure all students live up to their potential. She has a contagious enthusiasm for her subject areas and learning in general. Jacquie has made it her goal to connect with students that she teaches and that cross her path. If she comes across a student she doesn't know, she asks them their name and a few questions. The next time she sees them, you can be certain she will address them by name and start a conversation.

As a leader in administrative roles, she has led by example, mentored and inspired many of her colleagues and shaped the careers of other teachers.

Jacquie is not afraid of hard work. She is prepared, organized and commits to her students and her basketball teams. She also takes the time to ensure all students live up to their potential and makes those around her more committed to do their best to support youth within our community.

Even in the face of adversity, Jacquie maintains a positive attitude. During times when her family faced many hardships and trials, she maintained a positive attitude and remarked that she was looking forward to the day she could return to teaching.

Jacquie returned in January 2015 to the workplace. In Jacquie's words, when asked at school how things were going, she commented "I am where I need to be. I guess I am a born teacher and coach. This is where I find purpose and fulfillment."

In the words of one of her colleagues, "Jacquie is as tenacious, vibrant, energetic and straightforward as her job requires her to be, yet she shows compassion, intelligence, patience and kindness as her job requires her to be."

Students and staff feel comfortable with her because of her sense of humour and vivaciousness. Jacquie is a true example of excellence in the workplace.

WCS Cheer Team take second at provincials Coach Abel honoured

The Weyburn Comprehensive School Cheer Team, coached by Mrs. Kyla Moffatt, attended the Saskatchewan Provincial Cheerleading Championships in Moose Jaw on March 21. The team finished in second, earning silver.

To celebrate their achievements, the WCS team together with the Weyburn Junior High Cheer Team, will be hosting a Show Night on March 31 at 8:00 p.m. in the Cugnet Centre. Both teams will perform their routines and information will be available to any athletes wanting to try out for the WCS or WJH teams for the next school year. There will also be a special presentation highlighting the success of former WCS Eagles Cheerleaders who are currently cheering for University and All-Star programs.

Admission to the Show Night is free, and we encourage everyone to come and discover what the sport of cheerleading is all about.

Darren Abel was presented with the Murray Sawa Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contributions to the development of football in Saskatchewan. The award was presented at the annual Regina Thunder Sports Fundraising Dinner on March 14 at the Turvey Center.

Former WCS Eagles star, CFL Rookie of the Year and the 2014 CFL Most Outstanding Lineman and Grey Cup Champion Brett Jones, who is now a member of the New York Giants, presented the award to Coach Abel at the awards ceremony.

Abel shared his honor with all of the coaches who have worked with him over the past 20 years, in particular Michael Hoffman, Chris Michel and Jody Kerr. Without their dedication, hard work, and time commitments, the Eagles football program would not have had the success that it has had in the past. Coach Abel also acknowledged the fine coaches, organizers and parents of the Weyburn Minor Football program. He commented that their work at the younger levels has sustained football in Weyburn and given the athletes the fundamental skills and love for the game that they take with them to high school and beyond.
