Beavers head coach named WMBL Coach of the Year
All Beings Confluence
The Western Major Baseball League recently announced the 2015 league award winners and all-star teams. Weyburn Beavers' catcher Marcus Blackmon (top right) was named to the WMBL second team all stars along with outfielder Dan Moro (bottom right). The big news was the Beavers head coach Phil Curtis (left) was named as the WMBL coach of the year. Curtis joined the Beavers as a player midway through the 2010 season as a right-handed pitcher. He played three seasons and was signed as rookie head coach for the 2013 season. Under the guidance of Curtis, the Beavers have steadily improved, making the playoffs in all three seasons. In 2015, the team recorded the most regular season wins (31) in franchise history along with the securing the WMBL east division title. The Beavers defeated the Edmonton Prospects 4-2 Wednesday and have advanced to the second round of playoffs, which begin Saturday at Tom Laing Park.
The Duck Derby is back! The second annual Duck Derby, co-ordinated by City of Weyburn employees, is set for August 30. Last year's Duck Derby, which saw 1,000 ducks racing for the finish line, was such a success, the organizers have upped the ante by offering 5,000 ducks for adoption this year. The numbered ducks will be dumped in to the Souris River and competing for cash prizes. The price is $5.00 per duck, three for $10.00 or 10 for $30.00, and they are available at the Police Station, City Hall, Public Works Department and through city employees. Fifty percent of the proceeds will be donated to the 2015 Weyburn and District United Way Communithon. This year, the fundraiser will be held in conjunction with Weyburn United Way's official kick-off to Communithon. The event, which will include a barbeque lunch (hot dog, chips and a pop for $5.00), face painting, games and more, will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Tatagwa Boardwalk, east of Third Street, with the duck drop at 12:00 p.m.
During the month of August, an interactive textile exhibit entitled “All Beings Confluence” will be on display at Grace United Church. The colorful, sheer panels fill the entrance of the church, with new panels added during each stop of the exhibit throughout Canada and the United States. Each panel represents a single living Being and collectively, a sense of community.

What if?
The writ is dropped
By Helen Waller It was a warm, sunny, pretty much perfect day at the lake. (Is there any other kind?) The big guys were gone golfing and the ladies were at the beach, relaxing. Only one problem. We had one eight-yearold little boy, who was too small to golf that course but had a big amount of energy. We had played mini-golf with him (spent a week’s wage on the game, to be exact), gone swimming, built sand castles (which more or less resembled roads – he is the son of a farmer, after all), gone biking, spent time by the lake, played catch with a football... and he still wanted more! This was only the first hour at the beach. What on earth were we going to do to keep him entertained for the rest of the afternoon? Well, as a Mom, I did what most women do. I headed to the bathroom, hoping for a few minutes of peace and quiet, and surprisingly he didn't follow me. He stayed on the blanket at the beach with my friend, a Mom of three boys herself. She had another trick up her sleeve. It's called the game of “What If?”. The game of “What if?” is pretty simple and easy to play (even while suntanning at the beach). You simply ask the question “What if?” and add the rest. It’s up to your imagination. So, the questions went something like this. 1. “If you could play for any hockey team in the world, who would it be?” After careful thought, and with a Montreal Canadiens shirt on his back, his answer was surprising, yet statistically smart. “Team Canada, because they always win”. Definitely didn't see that coming from a boy who eats, sleeps and dreams of the Montreal Canadiens, but he has definitely been paying more attention to TSN highlights over the years than I have ever given him credit for. 2. “If you could play for any football team in the world, who would it be?” “The Saskatchewan Roughriders”. (Apparently, he hasn't been paying attention to the TSN highlights after all.) Well, there's one fan who hasn't given up hope on them yet. Maybe that's just the sort of thing the team needs to hear right now. Perhaps someone should forward them this article and let them know that not every fan in Saskatchewan has put their season tickets up for sale. In fact, this little guy just went to his first ever Roughrider game two weeks ago and his biggest disappointment wasn't their loss, but the fact that he was sitting up way too high in the bleachers to catch one on those footballs they throw into the crowd. 3. The final question was, “If you could play for any baseball team in the world, which team would it be?” “I would like to play with the Weyburn Beavers”. Well, gentlemen of the Weyburn Beavers, you can add that to the list of accomplishments this season. You have made franchise history, hit the first ever post-season grand slam, scored the most runs in a post-season game, and had your coach receive the Coach of the Year award (deservingly so). Now, after hosting a Beavers’ baseball camp a few weeks ago, that a little boy wearing a Subban T-shirt attended, you have also made that little boy’s bucket list. Go Beavers!
By Linda Wegner For us Canadians, the Writ has been dropped, the gloves are off and it's no holds barred. We're going to the polls. Reaching back to youthful memories, I recall snuggling close to a battery operated radio, tucked judiciously under the blankets, of course, and listening to news of any and every election. I never pretended to understand all the debates or issues but I was fascinated by the fervour with which speeches were delivered, intrigued by the predictions made by lauded experts on both or many sides of any argument. As a young teen-

Judging others
"Judge not, lest ye be judged." Have you ever heard that? Most of the time, I hear it (or say it) aiming at people who seem to have their noses out of joint about what someone else is or isn't doing. When I use it, I usually mean that we should keep our noses out of other peoples' business and not assume we know how everyone else should live their lives. Which means, of course, that I'm judging the judgie people for judging! Kind of a vicious cycle once you get going on it… But is that what Jesus really meant? Was He really the first advocate for tolerance and non-judgmentalism? "Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." Luke 6: 37-38 Jesus isn't just telling us not to judge others. He's showing us that we will GET whatever we GIVE OUT. It's actually pretty much common sense, if you think about it. "What goes around comes around" or "You reap what you sow". The tough part is figuring out what we are actually giving out. Most of us aren't very aware of what we're like to live or work with. So how do we measure if we're giving out what we think we are? I would suggest that the best measure of what you are GIVING OUT is what you feel that you are GETTING from others. So, are you feeling judged by others? Perhaps you could reflect on how easily you judge them. Are you being treated unfairly or harshly? It's probably an indication that you are being harsher than you realize. Are you surrounded by love, generosity and affirmation? Then you're probably sending good vibes out on a regular basis. You can see how this is a powerful principle for taking control of your life. Whatever you want more of, give it away! The change won't happen right away, but over time the trend in your relationships will be that the new measure you use on others will be used on you as well. Peace to you, Pastor Jay, Weyburn Free Methodist Church

ager I even thought about a career in such a noble calling. That was more years ago than I care to recall. I am not going to comment on our upcoming election as such but here are a few of my thoughts on the matter of making choices in our personal as well as our national lives: first, we need the wisdom of God because that's the beginning of true knowledge; next, by asking God for His wisdom, we can gain a better understanding of justice, equity and right living; finally, we need God's wisdom in order to enjoy life to its fullest. Throughout the biblical Wisdom Book, Proverbs, the virtues of wisdom are con-
stantly extolled. Wisdom will preserve you, promote you, direct your steps and "keep your foot from being caught" (3:26; 4:1-9). When life pushes us to make convenient or hasty decisions, seeking to know God's ways in our personal lives is a source of the guidance and security that we need. We're also given instructions when it comes to government. While we can't control every decision they make, we are instructed to pray "for…all who are in authority that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence". He hears the prayer of the righteous.

The Weyburn Police Service added two new members to the department on July 30. The recruits will be attending Police College until the end of the year, and then return to Weyburn to start active duty. Police Chief Marlo Pritchard welcomed Maralee McSherry (left) and Jonathon Kerr to the WPS.

On August 3, the Weyburn Police Service were dispatched to a residence to remove an unwanted family member. Upon arrival all parties were spoken to and the matter mediated for the time being. No further police involvement was required. On August 2, as a result of erratic driving behavior, a vehicle was stopped and the 50 year-old female driver was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol. A breath test was performed but the driver was not over the legal limit of .08. She was, however, over the limit for a 72 hour suspension. Her license was suspended for 72 hours and she was issued two traffic tickets. Also on August 2, the Weyburn PS were dispatched to a report of a domestic disturbance involving a 40 year-old male and a 34 year-old female. The matter was mediated without need for further police involvement. On July 31, the Weyburn PS were dispatched to a report of a loud party. The homeowner was advised of the bylaw and the noise was turned down. There were no
further incidents. On July 30, the Weyburn PS stopped a vehicle because of erratic driving behavior. As a result of the stop, a 22 year-old local male was arrested for impaired driving and will be making a court appearance. His blood alcohol level was nearly 3 times the legal limit. Also on July 30, the Weyburn PS responded to a report of a single vehicle collision on the parking lot of a Weyburn hotel. A 39 year-old male was operating a motorcycle when it struck a curb causing him to fall off. He suffered broken ribs as a result. No charges will be laid. On July 29, a Weyburn PS member, while returning to Weyburn on Highway #6 and #39 noted a vehicle to be driving dangerously, speeding and forcing vehicles to take evasive action as it passed. Because the member had some youth in the unmarked vehicle returning from a youth event, he was unable to take direct action. The vehicle was followed to Weyburn where a uniformed member was able to attempt to stop the vehicle,
only to have it flee. The vehicle was eventually stopped and the driver fled on foot. The 52 year-old local male driver was apprehended after a short foot chase. He was wanted on outstanding warrants and is facing charges for dangerous driving, flight from police, obstruction and traffic safety act charges. He was remanded in custody. On July 28, the Weyburn PS were dispatched to a report of a domestic assault. Upon attending, it was learned that the 27 year-old male suspect was still present. The investigation revealed that the male assaulted his 29 year-old spouse and her 32 year-old sister. Alcohol was a factor on the part of the male. He was arrested and is facing two charges of assault and will be making a court appearance in the future. On July 27, a Weyburn resident was contacted with yet another 'grandparent scam' where the caller was a relative asking for money as a result of an accident. The person did not divulge any information and did not respond by forwarding any money.

Weyburn Therapeutic Animal Park fan, Jaycee Giroux, donated $244.66 to Don Sealy on August 4. Jaycee raised the money by quenching the thirst of her customers at an iced tea stand on Saskatchewan Day. The animal park houses miniature horses, rabbits, a pig, a variety of birds and the most recent addition, a set of alpacas. The funds will be used towards upgrades to the park.

Rain improves crop conditions

Haying continues to advance in the province as livestock producers now have 67 per cent of the hay crop baled or put into silage. An additional 14 per cent is cut and ready for baling, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture's weekly Crop Report. Hay quality is currently rated as two per cent excellent, 46 per cent good, 44 per cent fair and eight per cent poor. The Ministry of Agriculture has a Forage, Feed and Custom Service listing for producers to advertise and source
feed products. It is available at www.agriculture.gov.sk.ca/ FeedForageListing. Topsoil moisture conditions have greatly improved in much of the province, thanks to heavy rains early in the week. Rainfall ranged from small amounts to well over four inches in some areas. Provincially, topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as seven per cent surplus, 62 per cent adequate, 25 per cent short and six per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as
four per cent surplus, 50 per cent adequate, 36 per cent short and 10 per cent very short. Crops are ripening quickly, and the majority remains in poor-to-good condition. Harvest is just beginning in some parts of the province, with pulses being desiccated and some winter cereal and pulse crops being combined. Wind, hail, localized flooding and lack of rain have caused some crop damage this week. Farmers are busy haying and getting ready for harvest.

TEAM Sask. trade JOIN OUR hits record 2 OPEN HOUSES Saskatchewan’s wholesale trade for May 2015 hit $2.3 billion, the highest ever recorded for that month, according to Statistics Canada. On a year-over-year basis, wholesale trade was up 9.8 per cent (seasonally adjusted), the highest percentage increase among the provinces, and well ahead of the 2.9 per cent posted nationally. “The record figures for May are very encouraging,” Minister of the Economy Bill Boyd said. “The fact that we are up on an annual basis shows Saskatchewan’s economy is moving forward.” Saskatchewan’s economy continues to create jobs and the province has the lowest unemployment rate in the country. Population is also up, with Saskatchewan having the second fastest growth rate among the provinces. “More jobs and more people than ever before are other economic indicators which are helping Saskatchewan continue to grow,” Minister Boyd said.

1989. The chapter had also been active for some years in the 1970's. The group applied to restart the chapter, to the professional organization named SACNA, Saskatchewan Association Certified Nursing Assistants. There were 14 members involved at that time. Since then, the professional name has been changed to Licensed Practical Nurse and the members belong to the professional organization of Saskatchewan Association of Licensed Practical Nurses. SALPN regulates Licensed Practical Nurses. The chapter is governed by this association and responsible for their own skills and provision of professional, competent, and ethical care. The Chapter meets at least four times per year and are here to support fellow LPN's, discuss work issues that arise, and promote the profession in a positive manner. The group has held fundraisers,
charity sponsored education, education seminars, and held meetings between the chapter, management and the union, to understand each other better.
Three of the members of the Weyburn Chapter have been represented on the SALPN throughout the years. Heather Cugnet and Pat Hood served on council
and both held the position of President. Janice Wagner is now on SALPN council and became President Elect this year at the annual general meeting.

Rider Insider BROUGHT TO YOU BY:
(306) 897-7499 www.pursuitsc.com 136 RAILWAY AVE., WEYBURN • (306) 842-3395
By the time you read this, Corey Chamblin may have already been fired. But I highly doubt it. And the more I hear and think about it, he may not be dismissed at all. Amidst the Saskatchewan Roughriders' 0-6 start, which included a 30-5 loss at Edmonton on Friday, a report came out via TSN over the weekend that Rider GM Brendan Taman was set to recommend the firing of head coach Corey Chamblin to club President Craig Reynolds. No one knows where TSN insider Gary Lawless got this information. Oddly, this came less than a week after Lawless told the nation Taman would not be firing Chamblin, thus putting his own job in jeopardy. Hence, the top sentence of this column. Things are changing by the minute here in Riderville and I've been doing my best to stay in the shadows and try to report only the correct information, if any at all. So as of today, Chamblin is employed by the Saskatchewan Roughriders as head coach. In fact Saturday night, Chamblin told a reporter it's "business as usual". However Chamblin's paid to win football games and the club is 0-6. The speculation is reasonable. But let's go back for a second and examine Friday's game and the reason this club is off to its worst start since 1979. After the game the players and the coach generally agreed they had one of their better games on defense all year, holding Edmonton to 23 or so points (7 were scored on a pick six thrown by
rookie Rider quarterback Brett Smith). The trouble here is the Roughriders won the coin toss but gave the Eskimos the ball and the wind to open the game. The home team promptly marched the ball 76yards down the field and opened the scoring with a 27yard touchdown reception by Kenny Stafford for a 7-0 lead at the 5:40 mark. That's all the offense they'd need for the rest of the game. So there's that. Saskatchewan quarterback Brett Smith was in a hole before he even took his first pro snap. And then the penalties started. The Rider players had said before the game they all needed to help out their rookie quarterback by cleaning up their game but they then proceeded to take 17 penalties for 127 yards. Many of them took great plays, and first downs, by Smith and his receivers off the board. Every offensive lineman was flagged on the night with the exception of Brendon Labatte. The receivers took turns going offside. The Riders averaged 13.6 penalties per game going into the Edmonton contest so they far exceeded that total Friday night. And Chris Jones' Eskimos kept their penalty total down to seven in this game. The Riders are in no way a disciplined team, although we've been told otherwise. And therefore, Chamblin is on the hotseat at 0-6. No matter that the Riders' top two quarterbacks are down and the club has been hit by a rash of adversity. These are not your Dad's Roughriders. Losing will not be tolerated. "Oh ya there's no setback on that end," Brendan Taman
told me before Friday's game. "This is a 'wins' business. Whoever's playing at whatever position, we're expected to go win the game." My follow-up question to that was if Taman's getting an edict from the higher-ups of "make the playoffs or else!"? "We've been in the business long enough to know they don't have to say much for us to know we have to win," Taman explained. "Whatever comes from above, comes from above. But all me and Corey can do is put the best guys out there and try to win games. We're working towards that and hopefully we can get that accomplished." The TSN report threw the franchise into chaos over the weekend. President Craig Reynolds probably felt like he's trying to navigate a monsoon in a dingy. He and Taman huddled up on Sunday but the contents of their meeting aren't known. At least not by me. I was half expecting to hear Chamblin walked into the offices and demanded to be fired given the fact he was effectively pantsed on national television Saturday afternoon. However from what I can gather, he hasn't. And a CFL powerbroker told me the possible replacements named by Lawless Paul Lapolice and Mike Benevides - are hesitant to come here due to the toxic environment which has been created. How could you tie a can to Chamblin with no one lined up to replace him? Stay tuned. This will only get more interesting from here on in.
