Weyburn This Week/Review to combine resources

Weyburn's two newspapers of record will be merging their efforts as a unified media company, in a major announcement made on Monday, with the resulting product to serve Weyburn and area better than ever before. Effective Monday, September 14, 2015, the 106-year old Weyburn Review and the 30-year old Weyburn This Week will combine operations to offer a comprehensive media company to serve Weyburn and surrounding area. This will mean the elimination of the longstanding Weyburn and area Booster, a local shopper distributed over the past 20 years. The Booster's last publication date will be Friday, September 11. "Combining resources along with our experienced staff offers local and national advertisers access to a number of services available under one roof including newspaper advertising, targeted market distribution, digital solutions, commercial printing, special projects and promotion items. We also remain committed to providing local readers with the best one-two punch of editorial coverage for local news and information with our two weekly editions," said publisher Rick Major. Also importantly, circulation will continue to be verified and reported by Canadian Media Circulation Audit for both newspapers. In addition to the printed product of the two newspapers, the Review and This Week will continue to have a presence on the Internet with their websites, as well as providing services through social media, such as Facebook and Twitter. "Following the successful redesign of the Weyburn Review in June 2015, readers can look forward to a face-lift along with new layout and appearance of Weyburn This Week starting Friday, September 18, 2015 - updated to reflect current times," added Major. Longtime publisher of Weyburn This Week, Andrea Corrigan, said she is looking forward to the new challenge of merging the two publications in her new role as general manager of the This Week/Review media company. "I have been in the newspaper business since the late 70s. I've seen a lot of changes over that period of time - social media being one of the most significant. The one constant though, has always been the community. People like you and me still find the importance in picking up a newspaper to discover what's happening in our community. I'm excited about teaming up with a newspaper that is over 100 years old to ensure that we continue to inform and entertain Weyburn and the surrounding area," she said. "With the formation of this partnership, we will be able to better serve not only our readers, but also our advertisers and get back to what it's really about - our community." "It's been an exciting process so far as we've been introducing changes to the Review, and now with This Week, we will be able to provide a fully rounded avenue of service to the community, plus the most comprehensive news coverage of the people and events of Weyburn and area possible," said editor Greg Nikkel. In addition to the City of Weyburn, the company will continue its service to the surrounding region's Rural Municipalities, towns and villages. These include Beaubier, Benson, Bromhead, Cedoux, Ceylon, Colgate, Creelman, Fillmore, Forget, Francis, Gladmar, Griffin, Halbrite, Heward, Kisbey, Lake Alma, Lampman, Lang, McTaggart, Midale, Milestone, Minton, North Weyburn, Ogema, Osage, Oungre, Pangman, Radville, Stoughton, Torquay, Trossachs, Tribune, Tyvan and Yellow Grass.

Farmers busy with harvest Producers now have four per cent of the 2015 crop combined and five per cent swathed or ready to straightcut, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture's Weekly Crop Report. Sixty-two per cent of fall rye, 34 per cent of winter wheat, 19 per cent of field peas and 17 per cent of lentils are now in the bin. Six per cent of canola and three per cent of mustard are swathed. Warm and relatively dry conditions are helping crops develop quickly. Rainfall this past week ranged from trace amounts to more than three inches in some areas. Provincially, topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as 10 per cent surplus, 72 per cent adequate, 17 per cent short and one per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as four per cent surplus, 66 per cent adequate, 26 per cent short and four per cent very short. Haying continues as time and weather permit. The estimated average dryland hay yields, with the five-year average in parentheses, are as follows: alfalfa - 0.9 (1.72) tons per acre; alfalfa/brome hay - 1.1 (1.72) tons per acre; other tame hay 0.8 (1.4) tons per acre; wild hay - 0.8 (1.26) tons per acre; and greenfeed - 1.4 (2.14) tons per acre. On irrigated land, the estimated average hay yields, with the five-year average in parentheses, are as follows: alfalfa - 2.6 (2.6) tons per acre; alfalfa/brome hay - 2.9 (2.64) tons per acre; other tame hay 2.6 (3.1*) tons per acre; and greenfeed - 2.8 (3.14) tons per acre. The Ministry of Agriculture has a Forage, Feed and Custom Service listing for producers to advertise and source feed products. It is available at www.agriculture.gov.sk.ca/ FeedForageListing. Some crop damage was caused by localized flooding, hail, wind and insects such as aphids and diamondback moths.

Are you tired of feeling saggy, lumpy, pinched or strained? Well you’re not alone. As you’ve probably seen on Oprah or read in women’s magazines, over 80 per cent of all women wear the wrong size bra. Here’s where Barb Chapman, the Bra Lady, comes in. Due to the overwhelming response to the previous clinic, Chapman is coming to WEYBURN on MONDAY, AUGUST 31 to outfit you with the best possible bra for your body. Chapman said she will be seeing clients on a one-on-one basis, explaining the benefits of good bras and measuring their bodies properly. “Most women just want to find a good-fitting bra that’s not uncomfortable,” Chapman said. “What they don’t realize is that a good support bra is also important for blood circulation and enhanced lymph drainage.” Chapman has over 200 bra sizes available for ordering, ranging from 30AA to 52KK. It’s likely that you’ll fit somewhere between those sizes. She offers these questions for women to ask themselves: • Do you have a drawer full of bras but none that fit comfortably? • Does your bust line “bounce” when you walk while wearing your “everyday” bra? • Do you overflow the cup of your bra? • Do your bra straps slip off or dig into your shoulders leaving red and painful marks? • Does your bra ride up in the back because you tighten the straps to give you added support? • Have you ever begun an exercise class only to drop out because your breasts ached from lack of support while jumping or running? If you answer yes to any of these, you are in need of a new bra, and a custom one (Jeunique, Nutrimetics, Colesce)could be the way to go.

1-800-254-3938 by AUGUST 30th

She doesn’t come into town very often so she advises booking as soon as possible. Although Chapman enjoys coming to this area, she is on the look-out for someone to train for or buy the business.

Local police deal with theft and arson On August 17, the Weyburn Police Service received a call regarding an intrusion alarm. As a result of the investigation, a 23 year-old male was arrested at the scene and has been charged with both break and enter and possession of break-in tools. He will be making a court appearance. On August 16, the Weyburn PS received the first of numerous calls ranging from mischief to vehicles to arson. A 24 year-old male was subsequently located and arrested. He is facing two charges of arson, nine charges of committing mischief and nine charges of breach of probation. He was remanded in custody to August 18. While there was minor damage done as a result of the fires, more significant damage was avoided due to alertness of the homeowners and police and the quick response by the Weyburn Fire Department. Also on August 16, the Weyburn Police Service received a report of an assault having been committed. A 35 year-old male was located and arrested for being intoxicated in public. The assault matter is still under investigation. Further on August 16, as a result of a traffic stop, a 35 year-old male was charged for driving while suspended and has his vehicle impounded for 30 days. On August 15, the Weyburn PS received a complaint from a taxi company about a person in the cab that had passed out. A 19 year-old male was arrested for being intoxicated in a public place and held in cells until sober. The Weyburn PS are warning that the Sask Power unpaid bill scam is still active in the community. Anyone receiving a call from someone representing themselves as a Sask Power rep telling that the bill has to be paid immediately or power will be cut off should not act on that call. On August 14, the Weyburn Police Service assisted in locating a 34 year-old male who had wondered off from a health care facility. On August 13, the Weyburn PS received a report of a suspected impaired driver entering Weyburn. The vehicle was located and it was determined that no alcohol was involved. The driver was fatigued but was stopping in Weyburn for a rest.

On August 12, the Weyburn PS received two complaints from unrelated businesses regarding damage done to vehicles parked on their respective properties. In each case, the locked doors were damaged to gain entry and the steering column was then damaged. Anyone having information about these incidents are asked to contact the Weyburn Police Service or Crime Stoppers. Also on August 12, the Weyburn Police Service received a report of a person selling merchandise from a parked vehicle. The vehicle could not be located by police. While this incident may have been legitimate, we always suggest that you exercise due diligence in making any such purchases.

On August 11, the Weyburn PS received a call from the local hospital regarding the theft of a wheel chair. While on patrol, a pickup truck was noted to have a wheel chair in it. The wheel chair was recovered and the investigation is ongoing with charges pending. Also on August 11, as a result of a traffic complaint, a vehicle being driven by an 18 year-old male was stopped. Through the investigation, the 18 year-old driver was found to be in possession of a small amount of marihuana. He was charged and will be making a court appearance. Further on August 11, a complaint was received about the theft of some personal property located behind a downtown business. As a result of the investigation, a 53 year-old male has been charged and will be making a court appearance.

Ten things you don’t owe your child - Part 2 By Andrea Corrigan Last week I shared the first five points from a great article entitled 10 Things You Don't Owe Your Child by Emily Vanderhoof. These are the last five points. I would love to hear your opinion on some of her thoughts. Enjoy! 6. Children are not entitled to a maid. Our job is to be the parents. We are not the cleaning service. Let's teach our children how to clean up after themselves and how to do simple chores. Let's teach them that chores do not always mean a payment when they finish. This teaches them responsibility and ownership for their things and their house. Everyone in the house can be responsible for helping to take care of the house. These skills help them in school also. 7. Children are not entitled to fast food service. Patience is a very hard thing to teach children and even adults. A child's request to you for whatever it may be, does not have to be fulfilled immediately. Sometimes it is a good lesson for them to wait patiently. Teaching children to wait is a life-lesson. There will be times in life they will have to wait, so they might as well get used to it! 8. Children are not entitled to pass to the next grade. Our children are all brilliant, kind to others, and selfless, no doubt. We all want to believe that about our children. We know our children. The teachers also know our children. Children may think this, but they are not given a free ride to the next grade level. It is not an automatic pass at the end of the year. Having their hinder in their seat every day is not enough. Children have to work and learn the information necessary to get to the next level. If they don't put in the time or the work, it is not a free pass. There are students who don't do their work or don't think it matters if they get an A or a D on their homework. It matters if they don't have the skills they need for the next grade! 9. Children are not entitled to win every game. We do not need to let our children win when we play games with them. We can keep score in a game and have a winner and, yes, a loser. Children can learn at an early age how to be a gracious winner and not a sore loser. We can teach them that they won't win every game. We also teach them that we don't stop playing games because we might lose or because we lost a last game. Competition is a natural instinct but learning how to lose is a lesson we have to learn at some point in life. This lesson will carry through our entire lives. If they learn this early on, adjusting to what life throws at them will be much easier. 10. Children are not entitled to be right all of the time. Everyone wants to think they are right ALL the time. Whether we are willing to admit it or not…we are not always right. Similarly, children are not always right and they need to be taught that they are not. It is our responsibility to correct them when they are wrong. They will make excuses for their behavior or they will argue about why they are right. As parents, we need to curb this behavior early and teach them that it is okay to be wrong and how to admit to being wrong. It's a hard pill to swallow, even for adults. If we don't teach them this lesson they become disrespectful to anyone who tries to tell them they are wrong about anything. As a teacher, and the wife of a teacher, I know how disrespectful children can be when they are told they are doing something wrong. Children may be entitled to their opinion. However, let's teach them how to voice it respectfully and at the correct time! Children ARE entitled to parents who will teach them the difference between the things in life they have to work for and the things in life that are given freely.

Invest in what matters

Summers for me are the busiest time of the year. Ever since I was a teenager I have spent July and August at weeks of church camps or Vacation Bible Schools (VBS). Recently this has also included short mission trips to Mexico to help build schools. This year I enjoyed the beginning of July by conducting a VBS at a village in Mexico in a region where I have built onto schools on 5 other occasions. The very next week I went to Kenosee to work at Clearview Christian Camp. The August long weekend was spent north of Prince Albert at Heritage Lake Bible Camp. At this very moment, I am in the middle of a VBS here in Weyburn with the Church of Christ. Sometimes I have been paid a wage to work at these things. Other times, just my expenses are covered. But most of the time I donate my time and in several instances I have donated money as well. Summer holidays? I don't have time for that. There's no place on the schedule. Why do this every year? It's an investment. Not the kind where you put money into interestbearing funds. Not the kind where you purchase property or monetary assets. It's an investment in people. More specifically, it's an investment in young people. They learn important lessons about life and faith at programs like camp, VBS and other youth events. Schools for children in poverty-stricken areas are places of hope where they have a chance to have a better future for themselves. It's not always obvious what impact is being made at these projects. Often the most important benefits will not really be evident until years later. Now that I've been around for many decades, I've had the pleasure of cashing in on many of these investments. Young people who came to camp years ago full of energy and innocence have now matured into adults who are serving God and their communities. Their children came to camp with me this summer and I see the process repeating in the next generation. It's like doubling your money on the stock market (not that I know anything about that!). It all those years of invested worthwhile. Don't come to me for investment advice because I don't know much… Except for this: invest in young people. Encourage them, challenge them and teach them. Prepare them for the future like someone prepared you. The best way to thank and repay those who nurtured you when you were young and immature is to re-invest in a young person now. Invest in what really matters. John Smith, Minister, Weyburn Church of Christ

Thought for the week "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." - Eleanor Roosevelt

Loved or duped By Linda Wegner This week my Spam box is crammed with emails from around the world. How could I have known that I am recognized globally or that I have the privilege of becoming the recipient of millions of dollars, should I so desire? Ah, such unrealized riches at my fingertips. As for the content of this onslaught of correspondence, I've been notified of the importance of my personal safety. For example, I've been warned that patriots are being targeted and I need to take action. I wonder, as a loyal Canadian, could I be at risk? Nationality aside, I'm even being asked

for my opinion on U.S. military and financial matters. Phew, I really have achieved world-wide recognition. Speaking of financial matters, it's astounding how much I can collect from deceased rulers, preachers and government officials; even with the lowered Canadian dollar it sounds like I'm eligible to collect billions within hours of responding to these generous offers. And to think that I've always considered myself an unnoticed and relatively unimportant individual in our global population. With tongue firmly in cheek, I must pass on the most convincing epistle of all. I'm sure the grammatical errors were meant to throw corrupt Bank officials off. I

quote, as received: This is to intimate you of a very important information which will be of a great help to redeem you from all the difficulties you have been experiencing in getting your long over due toexcessive demand for money from you by both corrupt Bank officials and Courier Companies after which your fund remain unpaid to you. And to think, all they ask in return is my personal identification and bank account number. "Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." (Ephesians 6:11) God loves, He doesn't steal!

Twin crafters

Local artist paints mural for CMHA Weyburn artist, Gord Stairmand, posed with a mural of a buffalo he painted on the shed at the Canadian Mental Health Branch in Weyburn, which took a mere three days to complete. Stairmand’s inspiration came from a trip taken last year to Clearwater Lake, Manitoba. During the holiday, Gord went on an excursion to a buffalo reserve and was delighted by the animals. "I really enjoyed how they just came up to the vehicle", says Stairmand. Gord has been painting off and on for 25 years.

Twin sisters Mataya (left) and Meisha Bowerin took part in the craft club held at the Signal Hill Art Gallery. The program is wrapping up for the summer, with the school season fast approaching.

August land sale brings in $3.0 million in revenue The August sale of petroleum and natural gas rights raised $3.0 million in revenue for the province, at an average price of $306 per hectare. After four sales in 2015, land sale revenues total $35.7 million. The August sale saw the Swift Current area receive the most bids with sales of

$1.4 million. The WeyburnEstevan area was next at $1.0 million, followed by the Kindersley-Kerrobert area at $420,580 and the Lloydminster area at $167,239. The highest price paid for a single parcel was $373,270; Mammoth Land Services Ltd. acquired the 291-hectare lease north of

Shaunavon. The highest price on a per-hectare basis was $3,192; Fire Sky Energy Inc. bid $103,333 for a 32.37-hectare lease southeast of Carnduff. "Even during current oil prices, Saskatchewan offers the petroleum and natural gas industry one of the most attractive jurisdictions in Canada for long-term invest-

ment by conventional producers," Economy Minister Bill Boyd said. "Our province's diversified and opportunity-rich economy, along with our strong business-friendly operating environment, will help support continued growth and activ-

WHAT IS BLACK & WHITE & READ ALL OVER?

Rider Insider BROUGHT TO YOU BY:

(306) 897-7499 www.pursuitsc.com 136 RAILWAY AVE., WEYBURN • (306) 842-3395

The bye week in mid-August is behind them and so too, the Saskatchewan Roughriders hope, are the prior seven weeks of the season. To call the Riders' start to this 2015 CFL season disastrous would be an understatement. At 0-7, the club has an incredible mountain to climb to get back into the race and lay claim on a playoff spot within the West Division. Having traveled all across this country this summer calling Roughrider games on radio, I've been asked in each stop how the rabid Rider Nation is dealing with the franchise's worst start since 1979. "Have the fans given up?" they asked in Toronto. "Your call-in shows must be toxic!" they guessed in Vancouver. "Are they calling for Chamblin's head?" they quizzed in Edmonton. In each case the football types have had a dizzy grin on their face. A blood-thirsty smile. Having squirmed over the past decade while Canada's Team forged to the front of the pack as the league's marquee franchise, those who don't count themselves as Rider fans seem everso-eager to see the Roughriders and their fans now writhe in agony with each loss. But that isn't the case. And while an 0-7 start has understandably had many fans calling for the firing of fourth year head coach Corey Chamblin, would you believe they're in the vast minority? In a poll at www.rodpedersen.com where respondents were asked if Chamblin should be replaced, an overwhelming 82% voted with an emphatic "No!". Only 13% were in favour of a coach firing while 3% were undecided. So when the football club reconvenes on the practice field this week for the first

time since their 30-26 loss in Toronto back on August 8, it has to truly come with a fresh start. Time after time in July, Chamblin said they were "00" in their own mind and each week was to be a fresh start. However time after time, the result was the same. It seemed the days between games were flying by too quickly and too many corrections had to be made. Injuries kept mounting and players were going in and out at a breathtaking pace. Now having had a full week to reset and clear their minds, to re-assess and hopefully make one final trip back to the drawing board, the time truly is now for a new start. Precious few changes were made over the bye week - at least that's the way it appears from the outside - however the club announced the release of veteran cornerbacks Geoff Tisdale and Michael Carter over the weekend. That could only mean one thing: "Guys are coming back," 620 CKRM football analyst and former Roughrider lineman Luc Mullinder said while chomping down pizza with me Sunday evening at a downtown Regina eatery. Changes to the coaching staff? Not likely. Although there have been plenty of calls for the removal of Chamblin as the team's defensive strategist, if not for his ouster as head coach entirely. No, the vote of confidence given Chamblin by Roughriders General Manager Brendan Taman on Monday, August 3 remains in place. While Rider fans were frantically checking their smart phones four or five times per day during the bye week anticipating news of a firing, I was assured none were forthcoming. Not on the bye week. Not this week. And not any time soon.

While the rash of problems affecting this team have been well-documented - some self-inf licted while others designated by the football gods - precious few of the positives have been publicized. The injuries have been overwhelming at critical positions. Some of those players are ready to come back. The team's offense has been generally good while their special teams have been nothing short of spectacular. The injury bug seems to have flown away to infect other West Division teams (QB Drew Willy in Winnipeg and LB Solomon Elimimian in B.C. for instance), and no teams are running away with the division races. In the preseason we anointed Calgary and Edmonton as the Conference heavyweights while the Blue Bombers and Lions were designated as the ones the Riders would need to nudge past. The table seems to be setting itself for the next 11 games. Perhaps, truly, the "storm is behind them" as Corey Chamblin stated just a couple of weeks ago. However if the Roughriders continue to falter and this season drifts away, the tough decisions will still have to be made. Those fall on the slender shoulders of the young, firstyear President of the team, Craig Reynolds. "Ultimately I'm responsible for the overall success of this organization," Reynolds told reporters on Tuesday, May 5. "My philosophy is you hire good football folks and we've got two of them in the room here (Taman and Chamblin). You give them all the resources they need to be successful and you hold them accountable for that success." It remains to be seen how that will all unfold.

Weyburn Swing for Scholarships tourney registration now open The Southeast College is busy making preparations for its 17th annual Weyburn Swing for Scholarships Golf Tournament. "These tournaments are a really fun, easy way for the community to support this important cause," said Dave Harazny, Manager of College Advancement at Southeast College. "Because of past support, we are able to offer all Full Time students a $1,000 entrance scholarship for Fall 2015, and we would

love to be able to do the same for years to come." With an entry fee of $125, golfers will enjoy 18-holes in best-ball format at the Weyburn Golf Club, a delicious BBQ steak dinner, and tournament gift. Additional prize raffles and a 50/ 50 draw will be held. Tournament sponsorship is also available, which is another great way to help out this worthy cause. All sponsorship and proceeds from the tournament are

"We continue to build success with every tournament because people have such an enjoyable time," said Harazny, adding that the tournament fills quickly, so interested golfers should register their team as early as possible.
