PEGO has strong presence in Aluminium & uPVC hardware
Architects, consultants & window manufacturers are constantly looking for new out-of-the-box solutions for architectural hardware. How critical it is to evolve and innovate & what are the challenges faced along with this?
For any industry, it is very critical to evolve with time and innovate themselves before becoming obsolete. Everyone wants a change and hence the shelf life of even hardware products has reduced with time. We at PEGO take great pride in taking the leap and constantly coming up with innovative products to address the industry needs. Currently, the trend seems to be moving towards minimal, straight-line hardware designs. The concept of one family hardware design has gained more relevance now than ever before. At PEGO we have been focusing on this for the past 4 years and have been successful in creating many family of hardware designs to ensure uniformity in aesthetics in one home.
While innovating, it is important to ensure that the durability, performance & functionality of the product is not compromised. Also, it is important to note that the idea is to improve the customer experience and make things easier and simpler for them. When these aspects are covered, most often it results in an innovative solution, which has a lasting impact. We at PEGO follow a very customer-centric approach to developing hardware and fulfilling customer needs. ‘Inpsired By Design, Powered By Quality’ - the tagline of our brand is at the focus point of everything we do at PEGO. Most of the innovations at PEGO have come from customer solution-based requirements, and that has been a winning edge for us. I am proud to say that lot of firsts in the architectural hardware have come from PEGO in India.
The traditional hardware needs to be changed with more aesthetical and solution-driven handles which are in sync with the profile system design. It requires a strong awareness of the profile system and the application requirement.
Because of PEGO’s strong presence in both Aluminium & uPVC hardware, we have managed to use the best of both the worlds and evolve hardware solutions accordingly.
Do you think the industry is early/ late in introducing these innovative architectural hardware solutions? Is there greater acceptance for such new innovative architectural hardware solutions?
Five years back, I would have said the industry was probably not ready for innovative solutions. But because of the global exposure and world-renowned fenestration leaders also pushing for such alternatives, the acceptance of such solutions has been phenomenal. Ease of information, lots of exhibitions and events, social media & world becoming one big continent in the end, have made strong demands coming from the architects, consultants and end users for such solutions. I also strongly believe innovation is the best way to distinguish oneself from others more when standardisations aren’t there at a bigger level.
Innovation is the focus point at PEGO
Are there clear demarcations with respect to growth forecasts precovid and post-covid for PEGO?
The change has primarily been the duration of forecasts. From yearly it has become quarterly forecasts.
My answer to this question will be very specific to only the fenestration industry in India. The splurge in demand posts the first lockdown has been more than what any of the pandits had predicted. It has made us all realise that while the nature of lockdowns will remain uncertain but the business will remain intact and positive.
At PEGO, durability, performance & functionality of the product is never compromised
In the last financial year, we have witnessed 45% growth YoY. I can say that it would not be very different in the current year as well. And I can confidently say it is not true for only our organisation but the fenestration industry in India at large with the percentage being a bit different. While the bottom line has been hurt significantly because of fluctuation in raw material prices but the growth of the topline has helped in keeping the organisation healthy difficult, smart windows will only make it easier. We are dedicated to introducing viable and lasting solutions in this vertical.
Further, as an organisation, more effort and time is going to be spent on strengthening our manufacturing capability & processes.
What is the focus area for PEGO in the next financial year?
We are very much aligned with the demand and need of the fenestration industry. We have already introduced one family complete hardware solution. We are coming up with more designs on the same concept.
How do you see the fenestration industry and the architectural hardware industry evolving in India?
I believe the fenestration industry in India has evolved rapidly in the last five years compared to the previous 10 years before that. And I strongly feel we are at an inflection point where the next five years are going to have an even bigger impact.
The reach has now been made to tier 3 cities and small districts and villages. So it means the market base has increased considerably thanks to the overall boost to infrastructure projects. This coupled with a bigger presence of international brands, thrust to the manufacturing sector, and global exposure for better products have all propelled the growth.
Yes, all along the challenges would come from inferior products flooding the market but I also feel the experience
With lines blurring between the hardware for uPVC & aluminium, we are using our strength of presence in both the verticals and giving the best of both worlds to our customers. We are focusing on reinventing some of the concepts to provide a more robust and aesthetically superior experience to customers.
COVID has accelerated the demand for automation. The COVID protocols are here to stay means the demand for smart windows will remain. Further certain areas where accessibility and operation of windows are
of end consumers in terms of good and bad will automatically mature the market in the long run. Also hopefully new guidelines from BIS would further help in ensuring parameters are being defined for doors & windows including the hardware.
There would be consolidation and entry of big corporate houses which would further push the growth of this industry. We have already witnessed activities in this direction.
Pushing the benchmark and creating innovative designs
How well aware do you think the decision-makers are in general about the availability of the hardware products for fenestration, their functionality & categories, standards, testing, etc.? And how do they gauge the quality and functionality of the same?
Rome was not built in a day. We still are taking baby steps in this and have a long way to go. Unfortunately, the pace is slow. And because of incomplete knowledge about the products & standard requirements we have seen the inferior final products at times, which gives industry also a bad name. Various associations, window manufacturers, hardware companies like us, and various other auxiliaries are taking steps to educate and share more information so that there is informed buying. BIS is also working closely with the industry to come up with the guidelines.
Expensive is not always good, nor cheap is the best way to invest in anything. We keep pushing through our certificates, testing machines, product detailing and standard requirements so that customers have more information. We keep sharing these through conferences, workshops, manuals and presentations so that they start asking these questions when buying the product. All these would only help the industry to be much stronger going forward.
What do you see as the main challenges faced by the architectural hardware industry?
The non-presence of formal and forceful guidelines and standards is the biggest worry for not only the hardware but for the entire fenestration industry at large. Till the time these are made compulsory we will have to deal with the influx of inferior products which would hurt the quality products in the short term and the industry at large in the long run. Fluctuation in base metal prices is another big hurdle being faced by the industry. What has been witnessed in the past 2 years is an unprecedented and ‘never seen situation. It makes the closing of big projects more difficult and is a time-consuming exercise. Further such situations make discussions on prices a consistent part of conversations, which uses a lot of resourceful time and reduces productivity.
Third, the lack of awareness and knowledge regarding these standards among the decision-makers is also a big challenge. Product cycle tests, product composition, plating or powder coating thickness, certificates, salt & spray test; these aren’t the most common questions asked, and rather the information which we as hardware providers need to explain shows we have a long way to go to ensure that there is informed buying by the window manufacturers or final consumer.
With awareness activities being conducted by associations and various stakeholders I am optimistic that things would get better with time.
Zinc for Seamless Connectivity & Durability
DMRC FOB Project, Delhi
The skywalk at the Delhi Metro Railway Station
The skywalk at the Delhi Metro Railway Station, which was completed in March 2022, is one of VMZINC’s latest offerings, showcasing the potential of zinc as a building material. The 5,370 sq m bridge has used VMZINC’s Flatlock System for the structure and Quartz and Pigmento Red for the finish.
The renowned architectural firm ISAP has used VMZINC’s cladding as the main fascia material for the skywalk which is an extension of the foot over bridge at the railway station. Connecting the Ajmeri Gate side of the platform with
The bridge looked like a natural extension of the existing railway station
the Metro station and multi-level parking with multiple entry and exit points, the challenging project required a long-lasting material that could withstand Delhi’s harsh weather conditions. The skywalk’s complex curved shape needed a malleable material that could cover the surface gracefully. Zinc, therefore, was the best choice. To give a harmonious look to the entire structure so that the bridge looked like a natural extension of the existing railway station, a combination of PIGMENTO red and QUARTZ was used in a gradient pattern. Equipped with escalators and CCTV surveillance cameras, constructing the skywalk was no cakewalk. Constructed amid the pandemic situation, the structure had to be built above a functional underground Metro station just 3 metres below with major traffic movement. Needless to say, the architect did a fabulous job. The unique skywalk was thrown open to the public in the month of March 2022.

luplast India, a subsidiary of the aluplast group, headquartered in Karlsruhe, has announced that it has kicked off the second phase of investments in India.
The subsidiary, which has a long history of operations in India dating back to 2006, and who has been extruding PVC profile systems in Vadodara since early 2016, had informed partners in May that it would be ramping up its operations to meet the growing demands and expectations in the India and Asian markets.
Babak Golriz, Head of Expanding Markets stated, “We are in what we would like to call Phase 2 in India. This means more machines, more local production, and more space. We have doubled our lamination capacity over the past 2 months and are now in the process of expanding our system portfolio in India by investing in major tooling which has begun arriving since July. This would reduce our reliance on imports and cut down on long supply chain processes. The final step in 2022 is expanding our storage facility and this would be complete before the end of the year allowing us to utilise around 5,000 square meters of new space for profiles”.
The investment in India mirrors what the aluplast group has been doing globally over the past 18 months, having introduced its largest ever product suite in the energeto neo, whilst expanding operations in Poland, Germany, Australia and the United States among others. Patrick Seitz, co-owner of aluplast added “India remains at the forefront of our ambitions in Asia. My family and the company have always believed in the future of the country and that is why we started very early, remaining patient and strategic with developments there. India plays a huge part of the group’s future goals over the next decade”.

Deceuninck is all set to reach netzero GHG emissions by 2050 with science-based targets, says Bruno Humblet, CEO, Deceuninck group.
Deceuninck has decided to set emission reduction targets as per science-based net-zero of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). However, Deceuninck has joined the business ambition for 1.5°C campaign, which is in line with the Paris Climate Agreement Objective to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
In February 2022, Deceuninck committed to the SBTi targets following the inventory of carbon emissions developed in 2021. Deceuninck has already defined the emission reduction roadmap according to the Net-Zero Standard and is all set to submit the targets for validation to the SBTi. Bruno Humblet adds, “Responding to the SBTi’s call for corporate climate action illustrates our strong commitment to sustainability. The science-based targets provide a framework for us to evaluate every business decision from a climate mitigation point of view. For years, we have been a pioneer in our sector because of our recycling facilities. Recycling will keep playing a key role in our carbon reduction roadmap because it implies less sourcing of raw material –Deceuninck”.
Around 12% of Deceuninck’s carbon footprint is linked to our own operations (scope 1 &2) emissions. It leads to considering and looking at the total value chain and the sourcing of raw materials. Apart from this, recycling will also be important to reach the targets.
Deceuninck has committed to reducing absolute Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 60% by 2030. This will require a 75% emission reduction per ton of product produced. That being said, Deceuninck will exceed the minimum ambition of SBTi (- 42%).
Deceuninck has also targeted to reduce Scope 3 emissions by 48% per ton produced by 2030. These targets could only be achieved with maximised recycling of the products.
However, Deceuninck is all set to reach net-zero GHG emissions across the value chain by 2050.

[Z] ZowoPlast Coating System – A Unique Product for the Indian Market
Berger-Zobel GmbH has launched its second [Z] ZowoPlast coating system generation in the market, which is an environment-friendly waterbased single component and single layered PUR PVC surface coating system with a long-term guarantee of 15 years. The product is completely free of NMP, NEP, TEA and Isocyanates combined with its very hard and scratch-resistant surface, but has parallel outstanding high flexibility and weather resistance. BergerZobel GmbH is a leader in the innovation of premium coating systems for substrates such as PVC and timber. Berger-Zobel GmbH cooperated with Doctor Window and signed a distributorship agreement for the Indian market and aims to start sales in the last quarter of the year.
[Z] ZowoPlast ensures a fast and sustainable coating process with a wide variety of colours and a wide variety of application possibilities to the PVC surface either by spraying, painting, or using a vacuum coating system, making it ideal for DIY to industrial applications. Due to its viscosity and thixotropy adjustment, the ZowoPlast system shows a great performance even with complex geometries. This is very advantageous, for example, for coating PVC frames in a vertical hanging position. In terms of rheology, ZowoPlast is trimmed for good atomization and flow behavior, which allows a very good surface flow and performance even with a coated thin layer, e.g. by manual application or automatic industrial linear coating line.
In addition to the colour variety, [Z] ZowoPlast offers unlimited options in metallic colours as well as normal or silk matte gloss options The system was tested in the laboratory according to categories of DIN EN 927-6 in artificial weathering and also tested and certified externally as per the world’s toughest PVC coating test methods according to AAMA 615-17 defines performance requirements such as hardness, impact resistance, abrasion resistance, dry and wet adhesion, chemical resistance against acids, mortar, cleaner, resilience to climates of high humidity, extreme temperature changes from cold to warm, intense heat and strongest UV exposure. To simulate the flexibility properties with rapid climate changes, the ZowoPlast system was subjected to a cold crack test, among other things. Here, the system was exposed to a change from humid/ warm climate and extreme cold over many cycles and the product offers great flexibility performance in hot Dubai up to cold Siberia. With a pull-off test according to DIN EN ISO 4624 and a cross-hatch test according to DIN EN ISO 2409, the ZowoPlast system provides excellent adhesion and shows optimum cross-linking on PVC surface even when the PVC is deformed by external influences.
Within the framework of the agreement between Berger-Zobel GmbH and Doctor Window, the supply of any desired paint according to the RAL code will be made to the customers on the same day from
India, as well as a guaranteed service will be provided for the coating processes onsite or in the painting booth according to the full-length profiles.

Greenfield International Airport at Mopa in Goa to be Complete by this October
Supreme Court Waives Delhi Fire Regulations for Structures Up to 17. 5 Metres
GMR Airports Ltd. through its subsidiary Goa International Airport Limited (GGIAL) is building Mopa International Airport in North Goa’s Pernem taluka with a fourphase master plan to eventually handle 13.1 passengers per year. Construction is expected to be finished by October (MPPA). Prime Minister Modi lay the first brick of the Mopa Airport’s development in November 2016. The opening and inauguration of Mopa Airport are scheduled for August 2022, and commercial operations will begin by the end of that year.
A 40-year operating contract with an additional 20-year extension will be granted to GGIAL. The airport’s passenger terminal, cargo facilities, air traffic control tower, and related structures are being built by Megawide Construction Corporation in the Philippines.
During peak hours, the airport’s single passenger terminal building, which is nearly 700,000 square feet long, can handle processing over 1,000 inbound and departing passengers each hour.
Nordic - Office of Architecture was responsible for the design of Mopa Airport. Interior design will be inspired by regional architecture and Goan crafts.
The airport’s construction cost was initially estimated to be Rs 1,900 crore, but was later raised to Rs 2,615 crore due to cost and time overruns brought on by environmental lawsuits. The project completion date was further hampered by the Covid-19 epidemic.
The airport is anticipated to serve 4.5 million passengers during the first phase, and 13 million passengers by the conclusion of its fourth phase.
According to Rule 27 of the Delhi Fire Service Rules 2010, which classifies any structure over 15 metres in height as a highrise, the Supreme Court has granted an exception for projects that are up to 17.5 metres tall with stilts.
The 15-meter limit would apply to structures without stilts, according to a bench of Justices Indira Banerjee and V. Ramasubramanian, while those with stilts may reach a maximum height of 17.5 metres before being considered highrise structures.
The Fire Department cannot complain about structures taller than 15 metres, although structures on stilts are invalid. Senior Attorney and President of the Supreme Court Bar Association Vikas Singh filed a petition in a Defence Colony housing development. Due to the project’s 16-meter height with stilts and the Delhi Fire Department’s refusal to provide approval for the same, there was uncertainty surrounding it. After the Delhi High Court rejected his plea, Singh preferred an appeal in the Supreme Court.
The primary contention put forth by Senior Advocate Nidhesh Gupta appearing for Singh was that the Delhi Master Plan 2021 after amendments, allows buildings that are 17.5 meters with stilts to be exempted from the category of high-rise and that the Delhi Fire Service Rules (DSFE Rules) was not in conformity with the master plan.
The Apex court agreed and held that under Rule 27 of the DFSE 2010, 15 meters would now mean 17.5 meters with stilts.
Foster + Partners Files a Lawsuit in India Over Unpaid Invoices Associated with the Abandoned Amaravati Masterplan
World’s First Integrated Solar Roof, “ATUM,” Now Meets IEC Standards
Foster + Partners, a London-based firm, filed a complaint last week in relation to alleged unpaid design costs associated with the abandoned Amaravati master plan. The dispute between the two parties has now reached India’s Supreme Court.
According to the UK Architects’ Journal, Foster + Partners repeatedly requested payment, but the governmentrun Amaravati Metropolitan Region Development Authority (AMRDA) was unable to comply. The demands date back to 2019.
Foster + Partners had worked alongside AMRDA for a period of several years to develop an administrative city for the state of Andhra Pradesh that included a new legislative building, judicial facilities, and a complex of office buildings at a reported price of £500 million (600 million USD).
Foster + Partners created a master plan for Amaravati, the new capital of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, winning a global competition.
Following a victory in local elections by the YSR Congress Party, which insisted on a trifurcated, now-retracted plan with various governmental functions being spread across separate sites, the effort was abandoned in 2019 (shortly before Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the unrelated national parliament redesign in Delhi).
The proposal, whose cornerstone was personally laid by Modi himself two years before Foster + Partners was chosen for the project, required the displacement of more than 26,000 local farmers. The request’s response was mandated by the court to AMRDA.
The first integrated solar roofing system in the world, manufactured in India, is now IEC Standard Compliant and eligible for on-grid approvals. One of Dubai’s oldest businesses, Uncle’s Shop, which opened its doors in the city in 1922, debuted ATUM Solar Roof there. We are really happy to have achieved IEC Standard Compliance, said Vamsi Gaddam, ATUM Inventor and CoManaging Director of Visaka Industries Limited. It’s been a long time coming, but the fact that it has now been authorised says a lot about our product and the commitment of the whole ATUM team.
An integrated solar roofing system called ATUM performs all the duties of a conventional roof while also producing electricity. It is approved to withstand hail and snow and can endure winds up to 250 km/h. It is also weather-resistant in all conditions. It offers a return on investment of little under five years and is approximately 40% more efficient than conventional solar panels. It also has a Class-A Fire Rating and is shockproof. Any home, commercial, or industrial location is the perfect fit for ATUM Solar. The Wonder Yarn, Vnext Fibre Cement Boards, ATUM Charge solar-powered EV charging stations, and the ATUM Life Sustainable Experience Center are just a few examples of Visaka’s sustainable goods. South Africa, the USA, and India all grant patents to ATUM.
The first project, which includes an ATUM Solar Roof, was started with the Sharjah Investment Authority to build a new mosque near Khrofakkan Beach. The project was handed off successfully and is presently running well.
