EDIT

O NOTE

R’S

Designing and implementing the right door requires a lot of effort. Conversations with designers reveal that the doors are responsible for setting the right tone before entering a room. We can further understand why door design should not be overlooked as part of the wider design scheme. Door technology is improving and with it comes a broader scope of colours, sizes, finishes and styles to suit the need of projects and contribute towards providing a more productive and safer environment for occupants. Selection of doors and windows have become more overwhelming, given all the styles, materials, and features that are available to choose from. Since windows and doors are a major part of the investment in any project and they are expected to last over 20 years, doing some homework before making a decision can save on headaches later on. New installations may also change the appearance and feel of your home or office both inside and out. In any renovation project, replacing doors and windows with energy efficient, double or triple pane windows is important, since they can significantly reduce your cooling and heating bills while adding value and curb appeal to your home or office. But how to select the right kind of windows and doors? What are the right installation procedures? Are the procedures followed correctly? All these factors affect the quality of performance of the installed fenestration. This edition of the magazine is all about the right designs and proper installation technics of doors and windows in order to provide utmost visual, acoustic and thermal comfort within a building. There are many articles by experts elaborating on performance evaluation of doors to enhance energy conservation and better acoustics. There are also a few articles discussing the key factors to consider while selecting hardware for doors, safety aspects like fire doors too. We hope that the content will help our readers to select the right type of doors and make sure that the installation is also done properly. A well designed and detailed door with a correct selection of glass pane or other infill materials will play a key role in maintaining the indoor comfort levels. Future development for doors will be fascinating and I will keep an eye on them along with you. Other than the informative articles on doors and windows, this edition presents a gamut of new materials and technologies which would be of interest to architects, builder and contractors. We hope you will enjoy reading this edition and will benefit from the industry insights. We look forward to your comments.

be, before we get into the technical aspects of doors, it is important to understand the use and impact of doors. Heavy wooden carved doors were such a striking feature of some of India’s old palaces. The carving, the detailing on the door reminds you of that era’s wealth, might and craftsmanship. Open chain latches were such a bold and striking feature of those days. That was a different time and different age, we moved much ahead. Beyond aesthetics, doors need to be utilitarian and coexist with the space. We rarely realise, but doors help us transitioning so swiftly between one to another space in the interiors. In the context of the house, do we ever realise going from dining room to bedroom, if the doors are open? They are an integral part of our life. Safety, security to aesthetics and well-

Door – Design Trends a revolving glazed door, you come inside and you might have a glazed door for a seamless flow between one space to another. The toilet will have a commercial board flush door and your sever room might have an access metal door. A glazed sliding door might lead you to an external balcony. And very importantly, you will have a fire door for fire exits. Just to name a few for better understanding.

being of occupants, they cover all aspects of our life. Let’s get deeper into this subject and examine where we are. UNDERSTANDING THE USE OF DOORS The doors have their own world. It is utilitarian most of the times that goes hand in hand with aesthetics and these days a lot of debate is happening over its use to save energy, that’s where it becomes so important. The use of doors is very critical. The major building types in India are office buildings residential buildings hospitals, airports, hotels, educational institutes, individual houses, etc. Understanding of doors is very critical. Let’s start with height and width. Traditionally, most of the doors were 7’0” high with a width of 3’0” for single panel door or more depends on location. Still, most of the doors are 7’0” high, but we have noted some changes and we see doors up to 8’0” or 10’0” height in public as well as in residential buildings.

TYPES OF DOORS What mentioned above is a general or generic basic understanding of doors. How do you select your doors? Let’s assume that you are selecting doors for an office building. Your door type may be or most likely entrance door, which may be

DOOR HARDWARE Every door requires hardware, just for basic understanding, commonly they will be hinges, door closer, handles, lockset to a minimum. In more detail, all the hardware will be specific to the use and material of doors, for example, we need a panic bar for fire doors and mop plate at the bottom of toilet doors. It’s extremely important to have the right set of hardware for each and every door. FIRE DOORS As an architect, our first priority is to make the building safe first in all aspects. It is good to see that fire life safety is not compromised these days and strict measures are fast becoming a norm. I see a lot of

clients suggesting their buildings to be NFPA compliant. Perhaps, this is a sign that our construction industry is becoming more mature. Again, if I have to borrow a context, then I will borrow the office buildings. We need to have a fire staircase, based on occupant load and travel distance and we need fire doors for these stairs beside doors leading to an area of refuge. All the stair fire doors need to be based on exit width. If you are wondering, what is exit width, National Building Code of India suggests considering 10 square meters per occupant for office buildings, so we calculate the number of occupants per floor, again based on National Building Code of India’s suggestion, multiply that by 10mm and that much width of doors requires to be available for fire exit. Let’s understand this in detail typically a 5000 square meter floor plate will have 500 occupants per floor and will require 5.0 meter of exit width. So, if divided into three doors, two doors could be of 1.5 meters in width and one with a 2.0-meter width. We also noticed that these days, spaces are leased at 6.0 square meter per person, therefore the number of fire staircases and doors are very critical. Typically, the fire rated doors will be hollow metal fire door and need to comply with IS 3614 part-1 & part-2 for stability and integrity, I will also suggest compliance with BS 476 part 22. A door or shutter provided for the

passage of persons, air or things, which together with its frame and fixture as installed in a building, is intended, when closed, to resist the passage of fire and/or gaseous products of combustion and is capable of meeting specified performance criteria to those ends. A minimum 2-hour fire rating will be recommended and they should be tested at approved lab or CBRI (single or double leaf). Door frame shall be ideally double rebate profile. Door leaf shall be 46mm thick fully flush double skin door with or without vision lite. The door leaf shall be manufactured from 1.2mm (18guage) minimum thick galvanised steel sheet. The internal construction of the door should be rigid reinforcement pads for receiving appropriate hardware. The infill material shall be resin bonded honeycomb core. All doors shall be factory prepped for receiving appropriate hardware and provided with the necessary reinforcement for hinges, locks, panic bar, and door closers. The edges should be interlocked with a bending radius of 1.4mm. For a pair of doors, astragals have to be provided on the meeting stile for both active and inactive leaf. Vision lite wherever applicable should be provided as per manufacturers recommendation with a beading and screws from inside. The glass should be 6mm clear fire-rated glass of relevant rating of the door. All doors and frames shall be finished with polyurethane aliphatic grade paint of approved colour. The door leaf and frame shall have passed a minimum of 250 hours of salt spray test. It’s very important that the entire door assembly (door and all hardware) be 2.0-hour fire rated. even in fire life safety door goes for glazed fire rated door. They are available in 60, 90 and 120-minute fire rating. These doors match up with indoor/outdoor spaces and integrate seamlessly with the designer’s intent. Having a slim profile with integral astragal, they come in several thicknesses of glass (8, 10, 11, 12 and 14 mm) and type of fire glass are borosilicate and interlayered also available in frosted and toughened glass. These are very practical and efficient doors. Self-Cleaning Glazed Door: The unique dual-action self-cleaning coating is located on the external glass pane and meant for external glazed doors. It has got photo-catalytic and hydrophilic properties, and works in two stages: (Stage 1) The coating reacts with natural daylight to break down and loosen organic dirt. (Stage 2) When it rains, instead of forming droplets, the water spreads evenly over the surface of the glass, forming a thin film and helping to wash away any dirt and reduce streaks. These are interesting, but I will prefer to see how they evolve more to become more popular among designers. THE HIGH-PERFORMANCE GLASS|GLAZED DOOR: Similar to external façade glazing selection, a right balance of U-value, SHGC (Solar Heat Gan

This is not only important for energy conservation, but daylight is also very important for the wellbeing of occupants as well. I have elaborated (with the simulation) the impact of single pane vs double pane (or single glazed door vs double glazed door) on a southern side of the building. It’s quite clear that double glass door is more effective for daylight and energy with the

CONCLUSION: The door has its own world and designing and implementing the right door requires a lot of effort. I was involved in a large transit oriented mixed-use development many years back and dealt with close to 1600 doors in one project, that led me to set up a dedicated team only looking at doors. I must say that future development for doors will be fascinating and I will keep an eye on them along with you.

Doors – Balcony

Balcony Doors T

his article may be a bit too late as balconies seem to have almost disappeared from apartments with RERA kicking in. In most projects, flower beds seem to have faded out too, except in luxury apartments and stand-alone buildings. To retain the charm of balconies and enjoy a good ‘cuppa coffee’ or early morning tea, it’s important to have good quality doors. Balcony doors can be classified into three main types but are not limited to only these. SLIDING DOORS

Balconies add a lot of charm and character to the building elevation

16

WFM | MAY-JUNE 2019

a. Two Track Two Shutter Sliding Door – The classic, always best suited for openings of around 1800 to 2000mm X 2100 to 2400mm. The Two Track Slider offers 50% opening with close to 900 to 1000mm opening to enter or exit the balcony with ease. Bigger openings can be made with additional reinforcements or adding a hurricane bar. Installation is the most important aspect for the optimum performance of all balcony doors. It must be discussed with the architect/ developer/project manager prior to the commencement of the project to avoid hassles. The doors should be installed only after the flooring is complete

Doors – Balcony b. Three Track Three Shutter Sliding Door – Wider opening exceeding 2000mm necessitates a bigger door system or move to three track sliders. The three track sliders also help in giving a bigger opening – 67%. The challenge is going to be with newer technologies in construction – Form work and precast walls, where the wall thickness is becoming less than 125mm. Bigger door systems have frames exceeding 150mm. This could pose a problem. It is important to have good quality balcony doors

inside and outside. Where water ingress is not a problem, low threshold tracks can be used. Two track sliders are easier to automate too. With more and more customers going

in for building automation, automatic sliders with control through iOS and Android applications, pet and proximity sensors are becoming more and more popular.

c. Other Options a. Lift and slide – Highperformance door leader – The Lift and Slide system has become popular in the last couple of years, as large sliding shutters up to 6 sq m are possible. The lift and slide rollers are strong enough to carry up to 400 Kgs and yet slide smoothly. b. Parallel slide – These doors combine the locking of casement doors with the possibility of sliding the door sash. These doors, however, haven’t been very successful in India due to the cost and complicated hardware for locking. c. Shift and Slide – This is a new entrant in the market with lesser hardware and offers the possibility of bigger sashes. The shift and slide also perform better against water when compared to lift and slide doors and has lesser components, making it easier to fabricate and install. The assisted locking system seals the shutter tightly with the frame, making it the best performing door amongst all sliders.

WFM | MAY-JUNE 2019

The Lift and Slide system has become popular

FRENCH DOORS French doors are the most common type of doors for their 100% opening and aristocratic appearance. Double French doors with Georgian Bars add a lot of charm and character to the balcony and building elevation. Different options for the bottom – with or without frame or aluminium threshold are available. French doors offer better insulation against external weather conditions than sliders. Some systems can accommodate up to 44mm glass, which enables one to use double/triple glazing; this, in turn, offers higher acoustic and thermal performance. However, hardware plays a very important role in French doors. 3D hinges and multi-point locking systems are important to achieve the desired performance. BI-FOLD DOORS Bi-fold doors offer the flexibility of having a bigger opening when needed. Various combinations of shutters moving to the left or right,

French doors are the most common type of doors for their 100% opening and aristocratic appearance

18

WFM | MAY-JUNE 2019

Bi-fold doors offer the flexibility of having a bigger opening when needed

make these types of doors, the most flexible and customisable. The Bi-fold doors rely heavily on the hardware. Two basic types are: • The roller at the bottom and pin at the top. The weight of the shutter is on the track below. • The roller at the top and pin at the bottom. This enables to have a low threshold or a U-channel which can be embedded in the floor. SWING AND SLIDE DOORS The Swing and Slide doors – Wave doors/Open Max/Magna-slide systems are similar to bi-fold doors but each shutter can slide in-line with the frame. This saves a lot of space and adds novelty to the door. Cost of profile systems, reinforcements and hardware are currently high, making these systems a little out of reach. Accurate installation is a must for these doors to function properly. CONCLUSION: UPVC doors are excellent solution for balconies as they are long lasting, weather resistant and eco-friendly. Care needs to be taken while finalising the type of door and joinery details prior to installation to achieve maximum performance. As balconies are more functional than normal windows, hardware plays a very important role in their durability. Hinges, rollers, espagnolets should be tested for minimum of 10,000 cycles and corrosion resistance 480 hours salt spray.

us along with our surroundings. For example, the heat from air conditioners, noise and other pollutants from industries and much more. Initiatives are required to make a living which is less harming and emphasising on optimum utilisation as well as preservation of natural resources. Fenestration plays a key role in the architecture. Its impact on the wellbeing of the occupants and on the environment is very crucial. We spend most of our time indoors, whereas its effects on the outside are overwhelming. Everytime, we consume loads of energy in terms of natural resources directly and indirectly. The more the technology advances, higher are its hazardous effects. Therefore, in order to overcome all these ill effects, we need to make efforts for energy conservation, and even the minutest one counts. In our residential and commercial spaces, fenestration is the most sought after part. The doors and windows are workable parts of the construction for a lifetime. The effect of fenestration products is immense on the occupants, environment around, and on earth and its resources as well. In order to improve the consequences overall, a lot has been done, and the glazing is one of the key factors that enhances the performance of doors and windows. Glazing is the arrangement of processed glass panes in the

aluminium frame structure. Different types of glazing – can be understood as layers of glass from single to multiple panes could better the efficiency of the windows and doors. Increased numbers of glass layers can enhance insulation, thermal and acoustic values. Single to multiple

layers of glass is also employed to improve energy conservation. Single pane - Single layer of glass pane is employed, which aids in maintaining internal temperatures with proper sealing. Although it provides insulation against pollutants such as noise, dust,

water and heat, while comparing it to double or triple glazed glasses, it lags behind in the race. Varying types of glazing used depend on the weather. In India, we face extreme climatic conditions, which makes single glazed fenestration unsuitable. Double pane - Double glazed or insulated glass are made by installing two panes of glass in an aluminium frame structure, which later turns to an efficient fenestration product component be it a door or window. Laminated or toughened glass of varying thickness, depending on the requirement, is used for double glazed fenestrations. Space is created between the two panels for the gas, which is filled to enhance insulation. These days, glass windows and doors are quite frequently chosen for their aesthetic and functional values. Additionally, double glazing in fenestration results in energy conservation tremendously as it insulates effectively, helps maintaining low temperatures inside in summers

and hence reduces the cost of air conditioning. Moreover, in winters, it is difficult to maintain warmth inside the building due to lack of proper sealing in traditional doors and windows. Double glazed or triple glazed glass panes are also helpful in reducing noise pollution within the premises, creating peaceful ambiance. Double glazed fenestration products results in saving energy and also helps in reducing the need for artificial light, hence using natural resources and reducing electricity bills, saving almost 30-40%. Triple pane - Triple pane fenestration consist three layers of glass filled with krypton, argon and a combination of gases. Triple pane windows and doors are more energy efficient with enhanced acoustic and thermal values. Moreover, triple pane windows are more suitable for larger windows and doors, especially French windows and doors. Sandwich glass - Sandwich glass comprises blinds sealed within the glass panels. The advantage of the system allows ease in maintaining the blinds, no cleaning required as these are intact within the glass panels. Moreover, the system is highly recommended and beneficial for energy conservation as it combats solar heat and hence, helps cut the air conditioning cost, especially for commercial purposes. Furthermore, energy performance is determined by measuring U value in W/(m2K) depending on the heat lost. The lower the U value the lesser the heat lost, better insulation, thermal and acoustic value.

In India, fenestration requirements are different and the products prevalent in the market needed modification. So, in order to fulfil the need, loads of research and development took place. Key Elements to Consider

while Selecting Hardware for Doors

D

oors and door hardwares have never received much attention during the design process of new or renovation projects. There are various companies that make door hardwares. No one would not want to buy the best door hardware. Beyond making certain that the selection meets minimum functionality and code requirements, more attention is usually paid to the look and finish of the door and its hardware than to how well they will function over time. If you don’t choose the best hardware then you will be putting your items & safety at the risk because thieves can easily access your premises. You need to know

24

WFM | MAY-JUNE 2019

different types of door hardwares and their uses. Not that long ago, it was possible to get away with ignoring door hardware requirements. Doors hardwares, and the functions they were expected to perform, were relatively simple. The biggest operational concern was keeping the doors work properly. Security concerns were limited to having a properly operating lock. Ignorance about locking the mechanism was the major problem while selecting hardware. Today, the situation has changed and the doors hardwares are no longer simple, low-cost components. They are now expected to perform more functions beyond simply looking

ŠShutterstock

Doors - Hardware

good and locking, for example, safety requirements for building occupants and door hardware can no longer be taken for granted. Hardware selection goes beyond simply matching components to the needs of the customer. It should also take into consideration the costs associated with maintenance after installation. Failure to consider maintenance requirements will result in spending too much time and money trying to keep them functioning as they are supposed to. Poorly or improperly functioning door hardwares can easily compromise building security and the safety of the occupants. Before one can even begin the door and door hardware selection process, it is important to consider

Doors - Hardware Also, it is important to consider the weight and size of the door. One of the biggest mistakes involving door installation is the use of lightweight hardware on heavy weight or oversized doors. Larger and heavier doors require stronger, heavier hardware. Undersized hardware will wear more quickly, resulting in misalignment of the door, difficult operation and security compromises. An important factor that should be considered is the level of use that is expected for each door. A typical residential application might be subjected to no more than 20 cycles per day and have a service life of 30 years or more. A typical commercial application will be subjected to hundreds of cycles per day. If the mechanisms installed in the residential-style door goes in the commercial application, failure of performance comes on the way. The other important hardware for doors is hinges. They too should be selected carefully based on the type of door like a hinge door for the entrance door. Quality of hinge plays a very important role in the door opening. For sliding or sliding folding doors installed in a balcony or rear area, rollers play a major

ŠShutterstock

the type of facility where the door is being installed. For example, doors installed in educational facilities will be subjected to an entirely different type and level of use than doors installed in a typical office or retail building. Residential use of doors has its own different purpose, the requirements varies for an entrance door to the balcony door to rear door. Selection of hardware is also based on the style of the door. The major mistake committed by a user or selector of hardware at the time of selection is that they only check the aesthetic look of hardware instead of its functions. For example, for the balcony area, most of the people select sliding doors. But at the time of selecting lock & handle, if a person chooses automatic locking mechanism or push handle, it will be a big problem because while a person is on the balcony and closes the door, it will lock the door from inside automatically and the person will get stuck outside in the balcony. That is why it is very important to check all the details, including the door location and usage of the door before selecting or suggesting hardware.

A door gives access to safety and security

Door hardware is expected to perform more functions beyond simply looking good and locking

role. Selection of roller and other internal accessories will define the performance of the door. Environmental factors should also be considered while choosing hardware. Doors are constantly exposed to an extreme level of temperature, such as in coastal areas, the doors should have finishes and hardware that are highly resistant to corrosion. Without proper protective finishes, doors installed in this type of environment can fail in as little as five years. Door hardware that is not resistant to corrosion can stick and bind, making doors difficult to operate and eventually, damaging the door, the hardware, or both. Another factor to consider while selecting the hardware is the maintenance of the hardware. Quick response to the maintenance requirements of door issues is essential because of the safety factor, it is necessary to stock a range of repair and replacement parts. Be very careful when selecting your hardware as not all hardware is equal! With standardisation, staff needs to take only a limited number of widely used items with them, reducing both response time and maintenance costs. But standardisation does not mean that the same hardware components will be used on every door throughout the facility.

for energy savings and security benefits. Energy savings with a rolling shutter can be significant, especially over large windows and glass doors. Considering only the insulation value of the shutter slats, a rolling window shutter can triple the R-value of a standard window. Additional savings come from the dead air space which is created, reducing air leakage and blocking the sun's heat and fading rays during summer. A rolling window shutter operates similar to an old roll-top desk. It is mounted on outdoor vertical tracks on each side of a window or door and rolls up into a small box mounted above the window or door. The individual slats are often only 1 to 2 inches tall and interlock with each other. The mechanism to raise and lower them is indoors. There also is an emergency hand crank rod that can be used outdoors. When the shutter is lowered to cover the entire window, some shutters still allow natural light to come indoors. Each interlocking flange connecting the slats

Doors – Automation together has long narrow holes. When the shutter is completely lowered against the sill, these holes are hidden. As the shutter starts to lift, the slats separate to expose the holes while the bottom slat is still resting on the window sill. There are several slat design options. The least expensive is made of hollow rolled sheet metal. Metals become stronger and stiffer from the rolling and forming operation. Another option is this same type of rollformed slat with insulation in the cavity. This makes it a little stronger and provides more insulation. The strongest and most expensive slats are heavier extruded metal. The type of opening device and controls will be determined by the type and size of the rolling shutter you install and the level of convenience you desire. If a shutter is difficult and inconvenient to open and close, you will end up just not using it as often as you should for the greater energy savings and storm protection. When installing a shutter over a normal-size window, an inexpensive pull strap operator is effective. For larger shutters or heavier extruded ones, a hand crank is a good choice. This is still reasonably priced and easy to use. For more convenience,

electric operators are available. With modern electronics, groups of shutters can be operated from just one control. Motorised rolling shutters are typical, and are perfect for circumstances where side room is less and security is required. The rolling shutters need very less headroom above the structural opening. They combine strength with elegance along with toughness and are designed for both external and internal applications. Automatic rolling shutters are madeup of interlocked Galvalume, galvanised insulated and non-insulated, stainless steel, patented aluminium profiles and patented bright steel bar rolling grills. Automatic rolling shutters are strongly built to endorse a trouble-free process and long life. The motorised rolling shutters can also be planned as per customer’s conditions or conforming to IS6248. Rolling shutters are automated using vigorous drive expertise with manual override in case of a power failure and are dense, noiseless, and dependable with low decibel level. Motorised rolling shutters can be manufactured to a maximum width of 30,000 mm and height of 40,000 mm with a boundless array of choices to please both artistic deliberations as well as a working prerequisite.

Doors – Fire Safety

Using Fire Doors to Maintain Fire Safety

W

hen loss to human life and property bring about grief, we invest our resources to ensure such losses do not occur again. For decades, countries and jurisdictions have been writing and evolving guidance documents (building codes) to build-in safety measures in construction to prevent loss to life. These codes give requirements ranging from structural requirements, fire initiation and growth prevention requirements, and even requirements for the design of plumbing systems to ensure the health of building occupants. The development and implementation of such codes in many countries is usually driven by manufacturers of products who believe very strongly in prevention of loss. The ethos of such companies drives them to aid the adoption and localisation of such codes written internationally. FIRE SAFETY CODES They are guidance documents which usually divide construction of different types of buildings by grouping them into what is called occupancies (the occupants and use of the building) as it helps to predict the behaviour of people if there is a fire. Fire Safety Code requirements provide the framework and boundaries to architects and consultants for designing buildings. The codes also help: a) Material suppliers to produce standard materials

34

WFM | MAY-JUNE 2019

b) Contractors to objectively price and plan for construction work, and c) Authorities and regulators to objectively evaluate how fire safety will be implemented for buildings which are competing to differentiate themselves from other buildings. For the majority of the codes followed in the world, a twopronged approach for fire safety is commonly followed. One, they aim to prevent a fire from initiating and spreading beyond the area where it began (passive fire protection). Two, to have measures in place to detect, and if possible, suppress a fire (active fire protection). As the use of combustible materials in construction has been increasing over the past few decades; fire rated doors (and wall and roof systems) have been enabling the containment of fire within a compartment until the fire brigade reaches the building and the occupants can be safely evacuated to prevent a loss of life. WHAT ARE FIRE DOORS? Passive fire protection creates a strategy of compartmentalising the occurrence of a fire within a small area so that the fire does not spread rapidly. Figure 1, explains how a compartment can be designed on a typical floor plan for an apartment building. The solid purple lines show the area where the walls might be designed to contain the fire and the red

circles show doors that might be required to be fire rated. The words ‘might be’ are used as the type of occupancy (where the building is constructed and who occupies it) defines what the fire strategy is designed and how it is deployed. A fire door assembly is a complete set of door-frame, doorleaf, door-hardware and associated fixing details. It is this complete combination that need to contain a fire in a room/compartment. As per a published report on “analysis of changing residential fire dynamics” by Underwriters Laboratories, experiments show that living room fires now have flashover times of less than 5 minutes when previously, they used to be around 30 minutes. The time between the initiation of a fire (dropping a burning matchstick or a cigarette stub as an example) to the time when major combustible items like sofa or mattress, etc. are burning creating high temperature and pressure is defined as a flashover time. Beyond flashover time is when it becomes very challenging to control and suppress the fire. To validate the effectiveness of a fire door assembly, such a condition is replicated in a fire testing furnace. Figure 2 shows a fire resistance test of a glass partition system in progress. Here you can see the inside of a fire testing furnace. TESTING A FIRE DOOR ASSEMBLY Testing laboratories need to be able to simulate the conditions defined

in fire test methods repeatedly. For fire doors, these test methods could be as per the requirements given in: EN 1634-1; BS 476 -22; ISO 3008; UL10B; UL10C; NFPA 252, etc. An inexperienced laboratory could conduct a test whose results are not representative of the test method and hence not useful. When a fire door assembly is installed in a laboratory, a large

number of details are captured and documented. Figure 3, shows typical installed doors in a test frame with images of some of the information captured. Figure 4, shows doors during and after a fire resistance test. A fire resistance test validates the capability of a fire door assembly design (material selection and process) to withstand and contain

a fire for a given duration in minutes or hours. Different test methods vary in a few aspects like the rate at which temperature increases (time-temperature curve), pressure increases or is maintained, etc. Figure 5, shows some of these parameters. But having successfully conducted a fire resistance test on a door assembly does not mean that all the doors produced by the

manufacturer will be made to the same requirements, and therefore, offer the same fire resistance capabilities.

UNDERSTANDING RELIABILITY OF QUALITY ASSURANCE TOOLS ISO 170652 and ISO 170673 provide the guidelines to third

party certification bodies to write their internal processes on how to check manufacturers’ capability to repeatedly manufacture products (fire doors) that perform to (fire resistance) test standards. Product certification gives the confidence that a product fulfils specified requirements. Certified products are manufactured by a given factory under an audited quality assurance and control process which has been approved by an impartial and independent organisation called a certification body. The ongoing production is subjected to surveillance audits, giving confidence that the certificated product continues to fulfil the product requirements. Figure 6, is a table from ISO 17067 which gives the tools that a certification body uses to check the quality assurance processes of manufacturers which are used for producing the certificated product. The product certificate is issued and is listed in a publicly accessible listing directory. This is called Certification and Listing. www.tbwcert.com is an example of such a directory. USING FIRE DOOR CERTIFICATION CORRECTLY IN CONSTRUCTION Certification and listing provide a real quality assurance mechanism as compared with a test report (which only shows one of the designs submitted by a manufacturer for a test passed a test). How to use certification and listing for quality assurance of a construction project? Figure 7, shows three main stages of the supply chain of fire doors.

Figure 4: The doors during and after a fire resistance test

36

WFM | MAY-JUNE 2019

Stage 1 Door manufacturers reach out to certification bodies to test and list one or more door-set designs. Typically, a door manufacturer will create a combination of 2 or 3 doorsets to prove to a buyer (architect/ contractor/owner) that he can manufacture doors which can resist, for example, 60 minutes and 90

Doors – Fire Safety minutes of a fully developed fire. To do so, a third party certification body accredited as per ISO 17065 will witness the manufacturing of the sample doors which will be tested. Such doors carrying markings to establish traceability are then fire tested in a laboratory having an ISO 17025 accreditation (to demonstrate that they have competence in testing). Once tested, the certification body will start auditing the manufacturer’s internal quality assurance mechanisms to verify that that they can repeatedly ensure the same materials are used and processes are followed, which were used when the specimen door, which passed the fire test, was manufactured. This results in a listing of the manufacturer and product in a public directory where their door-set designs and manufactures address are listed for interested parties to verify their compliance. Stage 2 This happens at the project level where a design consultant/fire & life safety consultant designs a ‘fire safety strategy’ for a given building. This is a document which aims to cover all possible fire risks scenarios by design features. A key part of such a document is the passive fire protection features which are ensured by the properties of materials to be used to build walls, partitions, doors, carpets, Internal finishing material, etc. Refer to Figure 1, of a typical plan showing possible compartmentalisation. Such a plan along with fire safety strategy can result in a schedule of doors which needs to be rated to resist fire for specific durations. This door schedule is often the tender document where the door manufacturer bids, and it contains a list of door dimensions, constraints on hardware and the numbers to be supplied, and of course the fire rating requirements. This is a crucial stage as the door manufacturers need to submit evidence to buyers that the doors they will supply, will

meet the same specifications as the ones which they proved by testing and listing on the certification directory. Often the change in dimensions or hardware form a combination which has not been tested and listed. Now the manufacturer submits the proposed designs of the doorsets to their certification body who may be able to technically assess, using past test data, that the new combination/ design will also be able to resist the fire without having to re-test it. It is very common that certification bodies need to re-test to give that assurance. Buyers need to be aware when signing off purchase orders: if there is a mismatch here, the buyer is taking on the risk and liability of a potential loss of life of people in on them. Stage 3 The contractor and overseeing consultant needs to be assured of the procured fire doors. Fire door labels (see Figure 8) are a common tool to provide the assurance between products which have left the factory and those which reached the construction site. Certification bodies take several measures (described in Figure 6) to ensure that the labels issued for traceability are accurate. These labels are usually put on the doors before the door-sets

40

leave the factory. These labels, along with the manufacturer’s installation guidelines, need to be checked and followed properly by the contractor and the overseeing consultant. If not, then they are assuming the responsibility for any potential fire accident including loss of life. Readers of this article should be able to understand the genesis of building codes and fire safety strategies. The note also aims to provide a better understanding of how fire doors (which forms an integral part of passive fire protection) are tested and certified, and how they need to be correctly selected and purchased. In the light of the recent fire tragedy in Surat, India, this note aims to increase the knowledge of readers to distinguish between the purpose of a test report and the utilisation of certification and listing. When used properly, such knowledge acts as the tool to bring about a higher degree of life safety.

Perfect Installation: A Key to High Performance of uPVC Windows An Initiation by UWDMA

I

t’s almost 15 years since uPVC windows entered the Indian market. As every new product, uPVC windows also had to go thorough struggle to survive and make its place in the new market. Today, uPVC windows have been accepted very well and are being preferred

42

WFM | MAY-JUNE 2019

by the consumers for the reason of high performance and low maintenance. With increase in demand for the uPVC windows, number of fabricators have drastically risen from just 10 in 2008 to 1000 in 2019. With so many fabricators and many of them using the

same profiles and hardware, there is a big difference in the performance of their windows. The main reason for this difference is the INSTALLATION that 50% of the performance of a uPVC window depends on the profile and hardware and the rest entirely depends on how appropriately

Doors & Windows - Installation requirements for the cavity measurement should be fulfilled: • For windows, all the 4 sides need to be ready with plaster, tiles, marble • For doors, vertical sides and top need to be ready • Flooring needs to be ready or the final height needs to be approved by the client • Advices and instruction b. Measurement process • Measurement to be taken at 3 different locations each vertically and horizontally • Minimum size out of those 3 measurements to be taken for production • Minimum and maximum tolerances of the opening to be agreed between the buyer and the fabricator so that openings can be rectified before window installation if agreed. In any case, maximum installation gap between the opening and the window/door should not exceed 12mm in case of sealant filling. Any larger gap needs to be filled with PU foam and/or with plaster. Check water level and perform diagonal check to assure window is in perfect alignment

and correctly the installation has been done. Even if fabricators are using high-quality profile and hardware, the performance of a uPVC window would be pathetic without proper installation. The tragedy is that, among so many fabricators just less than 12 % know to do a perfect installation. So the window which looks perfect, just after the installation, starts troubling in due course. And neither the fabricator nor the client knows that the simple reason for this is POOR INSTALLATION.

1. Site measurement 2. Design and specification approval 3. Unloading and storage at site/ shifting 4. Pre installation check 5. Installation process 6. Finishing and handing over Generally, there should be clarity on what will be covered under that specific order. You must make file for that client comprising the floor plan and approved quotation along with approved design/specification of windows and doors.

Here are the steps for a perfect window installation:

1. SITE MEASUREMENT: a. Following minimum

2.DESIGN AND SPECIFICATION APPROVAL: Sizes and specification should be checked and confirmed, from the final order and the actual site: • Any extra or less quantity to be taken care of and the same should be informed to the client. • Any difference in price, in case of size variation between order and site situation to be taken care and the same should be informed to the costumer and should get confirmed to the client before production starts. • Hardware and profile samples to be shown and approved by the client. A mutual understanding is needed on the above points between the

5.INSTALLATION PROCESS (Casement & Slider Window) Step 1 - To allocate the window to its respective opening by matching window name with the location name. Step 2 - Cross check the window size and the opening size. (In case of fixed window, remove the glass and keep it aside safely) Step 3 - Fix 5mm packer on the both sides of the frame's bottom and locate the fixing position, i.e inside, outside or center of the wall. Step 4 - Insert the window in the opening. Adjust and fix packers accordingly on remaining 3 sides. Step 5 – Check the water level and perform diagonal check to assure window is in perfect alignment. Step 6 - Make holes in the wall by drilling through the fastener holes in the window. Step 7 - Lay silicone in the fastener holes.

Step 8 - Drill fastener in the fastener holes. Step 9 - Spirit level check Check whether the window has uniform distance from the wall by using spirit level instrument, and then fix the packers along the sides of windows according to the gap. Step 10 - Fix the fastener cap on the fasteners with the help of silicone so that water never reaches the reinforcement. Step 11 - Insert the packer rod as per the gap between the window & the wall. Step 12 - Seal all the four sides of the frame with silicone and clean the extra silicone. Step 13 - In case of a slider door, insert the panels and check the overlapping of the panels on the frame should be 8 mm. In case of casement window, affix the sash to the frame with hinges such that after closing the window, sash is overlapping 8mm on each side of the frame. (In case of a fixed window, affix the glass in the frame) Step 14 – Install the remaining hardware in the frame and the sash.

Protection Against Noise Pollution with Sound Insulated Windows

N

oise pollution can be defined as regular exposure to excessive sound levels that may lead to adverse effects on humans and other living beings. Noise pollution is one of the greatest threats to human health and life quality. Noise is not just creating irritation to someone, but at certain levels and durations of exposure, it can cause physical damage to the eardrum and result in temporary or permanent hearing loss. Excessive noise is also a reason for various other health problems like high blood pressure, irritability, mental fatigue, sleep disorder and anxiety, etc. Excessive noise pollution is commonly generated by rail, air and road traffic, industrial and construction activities and outdoor loud music or usage of loudspeakers.

The world is getting noisier and noisier and there is no nearby solution to curb this menace. The normal human ear can detect sounds that range between 0 dB (hearing threshold) and about 140 dB, with sounds between 120dB and 140 dB causing pain (pain threshold). Noise has been proved to be

To reduce sound, there should be a barrier between the sound and the ear that captures the sound. Homes do that with walls, roofs, and windows that block sound waves from entering. There are few factors that prevent transmission of sound through the windows: • The right choice of glazing and frames • Add air space (increase the distance between window panes) • Correct sealing of perimeters joints during installation As these sound insulated windows are modern and manufactured with high quality and innovative uPVC profiles, they should be purchased from a reputed company. Such companies provide the right solution suited to your personal needs and the latest window technology with highly stable uPVC profiles and special functional glazing for effective sound insulation, leaving the everyday noise outside. S

ummer is not only the time for relaxation and spending quality time with family and friends, but it is also the time of year when several people find it difficult to create a comfortable and cool indoor environment. The insulation property is actually just as important during the summers as it is when the temperature drops. It helps preserve cool and conditioned air during the hottest days of the year. A well-insulated house demands little additional heating and cooling. How much money can be saved by insulating home depends on different factors like the type of insulation and the size of the house. Moreover, depending on how long-standing a house is, it is essential to incorporate more insulation measures. The good thing is that, no planning or permission is required for implementing insulation measures

and in return, they will eventually pay back, so, it is a wise investment. EXPERIENCE UNIQUE THERMAL PROPERTIES A high-performance uPVC material outperforms the alternatives in thermal ratings. uPVC is a natural insulator that seals cool air inside your building structure. The windows and doors made from eco-

friendly materials like uPVC, always keep the heat outside the building with the help of their unique thermal insulation properties. Such materials are known for increasing thermal resistance up to 94%, which means less reliance on air conditioning units and heaters to maintain a level of comfort inside the home. The uPVC material equipped windows and doors hold

Doors & Windows – Thermal Insulation an upper edge with their heat transition coefficient (U-value), which is proven to be appropriate for homes and offices. With proper designing and execution, they tap the thermal insulation capabilities. Along with the added benefits of reducing energy costs, these fenestration solutions also contribute to a more sustainable environment. In addition, uPVC products are supported by a host of environmental, technical and economical credentials, which makes them a key part of costeffective thermal insulation for your home. IMPROVE EXISTING THERMAL INSULATION STANDARDS Most of the people are becoming conscious about the multiple benefits of thermal insulation. Thermal insulation contributes drastically in the lower consumption of electricity and thus keeping the ambiance serene while protecting other building elements from the weather. Over 25% of the heat from home and public building escape through windows. So, with the rising cost of energy and increasing environmental awareness, more emphasis than ever is being placed on ways to save energy in all types of domestic, commercial and public buildings. Government regulations specifying minimum requirements for the energy efficiency of new buildings are gradually constricted. At the same time, the emphasis is being placed on the importance of improving

Heat resistant door

existing thermal insulation standards. The compulsion for thermal insulation in refurbishments such as replacement windows has also been tightened. By replacing other counterparts with thermally insulated uPVC windows and doors, the amount of energy loss can be reduced up to 75% and bills can be lowered up to 20% each year. Thermal insulation is an important component for a house or workplace. It not only keeps the air at a comfortable and consistent temperature, but good insulation keeps energy bills low. If you are planning to install thermally insulated windows in your home, then consider these below-mentioned advantages: ENERGY SAVING Thermal insulation prevents the transfer of warm heat from inside to the outside and vice versa. In this way, less energy is required for maintaining the desired temperature in the room. REDUCED COSTS Efficient energy use leads to reduced costs, because no entry of cold/heat is allowed from the outside, no extra energy is required to allow a constant temperature flow. ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY Climate change is still a major threat to our world. With the right insulation, you can reduce the use of excessive energy, which in turn reduces CO2 emission into the atmosphere. CONCLUSION You should choose the best insulation material in order to achieve optimum thermal resistance to enjoy all the advantages of thermal insulation for your project. During the installation stage, you should pay close attention to ensure longevity and performance over the lifetime of the insulation material.

luminium doors, windows and curtain walls are considered to be the technological and architectural elements with designed functions to interact between two inside and outside environments and are supposed to guarantee general comfort within the home. The main functions between others are mechanical properties, air, water and wind resistance, thermal insulation, acoustic insulation, light and shade, ventilation and safety. CURRENT TRENDS IN ALUMINIUM WINDOWS, DOORS & CURTAIN WALLS IN CONTEXT

54

WFM | MAY-JUNE 2019

TO THE ACOUSTIC & THERMAL PERFORMANCE Nowadays, an important element in the design of low energy buildings is the use of high-performance windows coupled with passive solar design strategies. As energy efficiency becomes more important, north Indian designers sometimes look to Europe for energy-efficient standards and technologies, such as the passive house approach. However, comparing European and Indian windows is complicated by the significant differences between European and Indian energy performance rating standards. The different evaluation methods and boundary

conditions also affect product design, as European windows are optimised to achieve the lowest U-values under their respective rating systems, while India is still establishing a foothold in these technologies and implementation in the systems. THE MOST PREFERRED SOLUTION IN WINDOWS IN CONTEXT TO ENVIRONMENT Windows, doors and curtain walls are available in wood, steel, PVC, etc., but those made with aluminium have all the advantages of the unique characteristics of such metal alloy. Aluminium is however also an excellent thermal conductor, and allows temperature

migration from outside to inside and vice-versa, acting as a “thermal bridge”. Such a disadvantage of aluminium can be neutralised by using thermal break systems. THERMALLY BROKEN ALUMINIUM WINDOWS & DOORS Thermal break, an equally important component in any window and door system, refers to the reinforced polyamide bar between the inside and outside aluminium profiles, creating an insulated barrier within the window frame. In simple words, it acts as a circuit breaker – cutting off the inside with the outside. The frame can greatly affect the actual energy efficiency of any window and door, including that of double glazed systems. Plus, efficient wall and ceiling insulation will make an even bigger difference to the overall insulation of your home, office or building. Standard aluminium is a good conductor of heat and cold, which means you can lose or gain a great deal of heat through the frame of the window/door. This

can ultimately undermine the performance of double glazed windows. A thermal break needs to be added to the frame. Thermal break technology features a reinforced polyamide bar between the inside and outside aluminium profiles, creating an insulated barrier within the window frame. This will conduct heat, cold and noise a thousand times slower than standard aluminium. PERFORMANCE ADVANTAGES OF THERMAL BREAK SYSTEMS IN TERMS OF ACOUSTICS By installing thermally broken double glazed windows and doors, you will be able to stop noise by up to 42db and keep your home cooler during the summers and warm during the winters. India is a diverse country in terms of geographies, having extreme heat in the west to extreme cold in the north – thermal break works in both these cases. Sections can be anodised or powder coated with a durable surface coating that can withstand the harsh Indian climate, including UV mage and salt corrosion.

TECHNIQUES FOR SOUND REDUCTION Silence is golden. Constant outside noise, whether from the vehicle or air traffic, dogs, wildlife, machinery, or loud neighbours, can present a serious intrusion in your home life. Double glazing is the most common noise reducing system of insulation or soundproofing. Typically called an IGU (Insulating Glass Unit), it comprises two panes of glass, an air gap in the middle, and a specialised frame. The frame, extra glass and air pocket work together as a noise filter to create soundproof insulation between the inside and outside of the window or door. Standard windows with an ordinary frame and one pane of glass account for a huge amount of noise transmission. With double glazed systems, the window glass, air gap and frames act as a noise reducer. This makes sure that the annoyance of street noise, neighbour noise, traffic noise and even barking dogs can be filtered out. Using specialised thermally broken aluminium/brass/

steel frames, a high acoustic performance can be achieved. Thermally broken aluminium contains a soundproof material that is placed between the inside

and outside of the frame and the sash. This creates an insulating buffer against the outside world. Thermally broken aluminium conducts heat/cold/noise a

thousand times slower than standard aluminium. The Weighted Sound Reduction Index (Rw) measures the reduction of sound decibels transferred through a single building element i.e. walls or windows. The higher the RW rating, the better the sound insulation. The Sound Transmission Class (STC) reflects the amount of noise that is reduced when sound passes through a window. Both are the measurements that are

used to measure the level of sound insulation in houses, buildings and apartments. Is it possible to have a thermal break in any other metal? Yes, indeed it is possible to have a thermal break in other precious metals such as brass, corten steel, stainless steel and galvanised steel.

58

WFM | MAY-JUNE 2019

Although the market for them is very small as aluminium is the most preferred metal with the architects for performance and value. THE MARKET FOR THERMAL BREAK SYSTEMS IN INDIA Thermally broken window frames have been available for a number

of years, but for some reason their uptake has not been as rapid as might be expected from the promotion given to them. In the exterior wall of a house, the most thermally inefficient portion is the windows. We tolerate this disadvantage because the inhabitants like to be able to look out, and also the glass allows radiant solar energy to enter the building so as to give a positive thermal gain. A double-glazed aluminium framed window has an R-value (insulation) which is only about a tenth of that of the adjacent insulation wall of standard construction. Now, the customers are getting aware of thermal break systems, whether through social media or personal references, definitely, the trend is going upwards. On the architect’s demand side, the demand for (both: acoustic and thermal) high-performance fenestration products continue to increase for noisy metropolises, and utilisation of more efficient material will need to be augmented by the introduction of more innovative and efficient designs. Manufacturers are rushing with new products to help builders, and designers to achieve higher levels of comfort for both residential and commercial constructions in the best way possible. Customers are only getting more aware of the energy consumption and how to minimise the carbon footprint. Many European countries offer a tax rebate when citizens are using certified high-performance systems for fenestration. The governments are aware that energy saved using these systems is substantial and helps in minimising the carbon footprint and savings for both, as the customer gets reduced energy bills while for the government, the environmental impact is minimised.

Doors & Windows - Acoustic & Thermal Performance Additional Benefits of Thermally Broken Aluminium Windows & Doors: • Conducts heat and noise 1000 times slower than normal aluminium • Flame retardant • Added layer of security • Low maintenance • Long lasting • Durable • Non-corrosive • Thermal break technology • Excellent thermal and acoustic insulation • Powder coated surfaces with a large range of colours specially Binario, where you have a different colour outside to match your exterior and different colours inside to match your interior theme.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTING THE RIGHT VALUES FOR CERTIFIED WINDOWS Firstly, it is important to be aware that NFRC, ISO, and passive house U-values cannot be compared as they are based on different calculation procedures. For example, when comparing a product from Europe and a product from North America, designers should ask for and compare values determined under the same standards. Going forward, it may be useful for the

industry to add subscripts for the NFRC and ISO U-values to distinguish European from the North American U-values (e.g. UNFRC, UISO). Those comparing certified passive house window U-values should be aware that results are climate-specific, and have been determined according to different boundary conditions for the different climates. For instance, the cold-temperate climate, passive house recognises both U-values determined at 0ºC and 5ºC.

Customers always prefer high-performance systems for fenestration

DOOR WINDOW EVALUATION: MEASUREMENT & ASSESSMENT FOR INTERIOR COMFORT LEVELS Indoor comfort level helps when the door provides adequate security. One has to keep in mind acoustic, visual and thermal comfort to maintain the balance. Doors prevent excess heat or cold entering in and provide comfort. It restricts excessive daylight and heating of the room and the door should have a double sealing gasket system, making it air tight, says Mario Schmidt, Managing Director, Lingel Windows and Doors Technologies Private Limited. If the doors are properly installed as per design & detail intent of an architect, it will definitely help in maintaining the indoor comfort level, points out Ashutosh Jha, Senior Architect & LEED AP (BD+C), PMP, Studio & Technical Director, Gensler at Bangalore, indoor comfort level depends on air quality inside the space. “Keep air flowing through your home or office so you are only exposed to fresh, clean air. Opening the doors or windows is a great way to improve airflow, but this may not be the best option for people who live in humid climates or cities with a lot of outdoor air pollution. Striking right balance is very important,” Jha adds.

Rajaikepin Rajamoni, Business Head, Sobha Façades points out that fenestration should act as a balance between functional requirements versus offering a comfortable shelter against the outdoor conditions. To keep the external environment, the doors should perform well on keeping wind, water, heat, cold and noise out. The right type of door should be selected based on the functional requirements i.e., traffic, egress type, fire rating, etc., and performance requirements mainly considering air, water, thermal and acoustics. A well designed and detailed door with a correct selection of glass pane or other infill materials will play a key role in maintaining the indoor comfort levels. According to Varghese PV, CEO, Glazing and Metal Works, Sobha Ltd, doors help maintain comfort by: A. Giving proper acoustic closure. If the doors are made after a careful selection of sections, glass and gaskets, it can reduce sound considerably. B. It can provide thermal comfort by reducing the heat transfer through the door. This requires a proper selection of glass or door infill material. C. With proper doors, the discomfort due to water seepage can also be avoided.

Cover Story Daylighting design saves energies in many ways. In daylighting, there are two categories, explains Avanish Singh Visen, CEO, Encraft - one is ‘side lighting’ and another one is ‘top lighting’. Side lighting products face the horizon and the top lighting products face the sky. Doors and windows come under the ‘side lighting’ and it provides daylight and solar energy along with the perimeter of a building. Here an orientation with respect to the sun’s path is a critical factor. Remember, the overriding goal of any daylighting design is how well it uses the available light. However, uncontrolled daylight may result in excessive heat gain and potential

discomfort. It is important to ensure that the fenestration is appropriately sized and located, and that the correct glazing and accessories are selected. Use the fenestration area wisely to help insure the energy benefits balance the costs, adds Visen. Superior noise resistance quality of uPVC doors offer excellent soundproofing for home, says Manish Bansal, Director, Window Magic India. uPVC doors also help in maintaining the right inside temperature irrespective of outdoor temperature. In today’s scenario, it’s difficult to find a place where a person can enjoy peaceful solitude, but the superior noise

MANISH BANSAL

Director, Window Magic India

resistance quality of uPVC doors enables users to create silent zones, observes Bansal. uPVC windows and doors have excellent thermal performance. During winters, they resist heat loss, whereas, in summers, they oppose heat gain. IMPROVED ACOUSTICS THROUGH PROPER DESIGN & INSTALLATION OF DOORS & WINDOWS "This is a broad subject and especially reminds me the doors positioned within the meeting room within the office space, using a combination of methods like door gaskets and weather-stripping certainly helps for acoustics", says Ashutosh Jha. The acoustical architectural design incorporates a noise reducing concepts in the details of individual buildings, explains Visen. The areas of architectural concern include building height, room arrangement, windows & doors design/installation, and balcony and courtyard design. Sound enters a building through its acoustically weakest points, and windows are one of the weakest parts of a wall. A wrong design or not properly installed window will severely negate the effect of a very strong wall. Double glazing is one of the most effective barriers against sound, and combined with uPVC window frame systems, it can reduce perceived noise by up to 80% (~45dB). uPVC windows with good weather sealing are essential for effective sound insulation. uPVC windows profiles are welded and have multiple chamber construction. These two factors combined with the thickness of glass, provide the finished window with excellent acoustic insulation, reflecting sound waves before they have the opportunity to create vibrations and noise, says Visen. The acoustics of a door can be improved drastically in three major ways, points out Varghese PV: • There should be a proper selection of the outer

WFM | MAY-JUNE 2019

71

Cover Story The following will have to be kept in mind to improve acoustics: The window fabricator has to understand the customer’s demand and analyse the source of unwanted noise. The customer should be given practical advice and one would not talk about the percentage of noise reduction without specifying the exact noise reduction and the usage of a decibel meter. Besides this, the site should be visited to check the actual and typical noise. Finally, the right choice of glass and window should be made. Be careful that the decibel reduction provided by the glass industry is tested as per EN717-1. Other key points to consider: 1. Ensure there are no gaps and cracks around the window frame 2. The design of the glass combination must suit the requirement and one must keep in mind the location, outer level of noise, type of building. 3. Combination of insulated and laminated glass can also help in sound reduction. 4. Use different configurations of glass thickness. 5. Between two layers of different glass thickness when the PVB layer is used, it has a dampening effect of sound. (Mario Schmidt, Managing Director Lingel Windows and Doors Technologies Pvt. Ltd.)

frame and shutter frame. It is important to note that aluminium frames with multichamber sections and poly urethane infill will do the trick. • Careful selection of gaskets, with a focus on quality, welldesigned gaskets play an important role in proper closure, offering good acoustics. • The infill of the door is also very important. Double glazed glass panels with laminated glass as outer pane is suggested. Though the major part of the acoustics in the door is decided by the glazing used, other factors like detailing, sealing the jambs and gaskets between frames are important in getting better acoustic performance, remarks Rajamoni. The frames also to be designed to accommodate

74

WFM | MAY-JUNE 2019

required glass thicknesses for obtaining optimum values. Next level is to increase the spacer size in DGU and using dissimilar thickness glasses to help dampen mid frequency noises. Further improvements shall be achieved using acoustic PVB layers in glasses and filler materials in frame cavities to reduce detonation, adds Rajamoni.

An office building in Mumbai - a project by Gensler

IMPROVING THERMAL COMFORT THROUGH EFFECTIVE FENESTRATION A door or a window provides ventilation for fresh air to come in and vice versa, observes Schmidt. It also provides air circulation. Other benefits could include making the place warmer by reducing drafts in the colder months. The quality of air can be improved by using the seal and preventing or reducing mold growth and condensation. Well-designed and fitted window systems provide the following: improves energyefficiency, minimises air leakage, improves the performance of the air conditioner and cuts down on the electricity bills.

For an energy efficient window system: • Ensure there are no cracks or crevices as this increase the amount of energy loss. • Windows and doors have a gasket seal that ensures there is no air leakage • The kind of glass used will also make a difference • Try to use fluorescent lights as it consumes less electricity and won’t heat up the place • Have the right material door or window, for instance uPVC

According to Rajamoni, having the appropriate size and quantity of openings in the building envelope is mandatory for occupant comfort. Apart from the functional requirement, doors and windows may allow undesired heat/cold, air, water and condensation if it is not designed and engineered properly. Thus, adequate thermal performance of fenestrations must be assured for comfortable living. The process starts from the design of correct fenestration type and quality, selection of frame materials and glass, meticulous engineering of joint details and intersection with other trades. The following consideration would improve: The right selection of glass is the primary requirement of thermal performance, many architects like to use more transparent glasses to get the fluidity into their design and to get abundant natural light inside. However, points out Rajamoni, there must be a balance of other parameters such as optimum light transmission, and in tropical countries, more importance to be given to shading coefficient over U values. Solar control glass/low E glasses with an optimum spacer can achieve the

desired performance. Designers should look into relative heat gain per Sq m instead of merely looking into the U value alone. Another important factor is cold profiles, i.e., thermally broken frames. In doors and windows, normally the exposed frame area will be high, hence, opting to thermal break will reduce the heat/cold transfer significantly. Varghese, agreeing with Rajamoni, says: thermal comfort depends on the selection of façade material and glass. It is important

to opt for a combination that provides the lowest “U” value and shading coefficient. Double glazing with proper space in between, double “low e” coated glasses for high performance among others are some of the techniques. Thermal comfort not only depends on fenestration. It depends on the orientation of the building, thermal insulation provision on façade wall and many other factors, points out Jha. A well-detailed door is installed considering their location and

Cover Story exposure to the sun, and this can help with thermal insulation. A fenestration system with low U value and low effective SHGC, explains Visen, can result in a reduction of heating and cooling demand by 6 to 11 percent in a moderate climate and between 8-16 percent in hot humid, hot dry, and composite climates. Thus, savings increase to 8 to 17 percent for moderate, and 12 to 26 percent for hot humid, hot dry, and composite climates, if high-performance fenestration system, with low-e glass, uPVC frames, and well-designed shading are factored in. Usage of double glazing reduces the internal temperature of the glass because of reduced conduction of heat from the outdoors. This results in better radiant temperature control and enhanced comfort. This effect can be felt in both heating and cooling, especially in spaces which have large glazed areas. PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF DIFFERENT DOOR CONFIGURATIONS TO ENHANCE ENERGY CONSERVATION Doors can contribute significantly to air leakage, and can also waste energy through conduction, especially if it's not properly designed, improperly installed, and/or improperly air sealed, says Visen. During the construction of any building /home, an Individual should consider buying of most energy efficient doors possible, and for this, it is important to first consider their energy performance ratings in relation to the local climate and building/ home's design. There are national councils worldwide, which helps to compare energy performance ratings of doors & it shows the “ "Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) and U value factor of the door which is the main criteria of doors ratings for energy conservation. If the door does not leak the inside air outside, half of your

problem is solved, points out Jha. If exterior doors are difficult to push open because the outside air wants to rush inside, this is an indication that the building is negatively pressurised. With negative pressure, the building is likely to pull outside air in from cracks, leading to increased humidity in warm weather and chilly drafts during cold. A little positive pressure creates a barrier from the exterior, allowing for more control over interior conditions. The energy conservation by using windows/doors depends on the efficiency of heat resistance. Careful selection of material, proper procures and technologies

will help achieve the objective, observes Varghese PV. As a rule of thumb, says Rajamoni, hinged doors with thermal break and deeper profiles are expected to perform well compared to pivoted and swing doors. However, the selection of doors is purely based on functional requirements. Adding vestibule design to the swing doors or revolving doors will help in energy conservation if there is high traffic. Both casement and sliding doors offer different levels of energy enhancement. While casement doors are better for soundproofing, they are also very effective in keeping the ambiance warm. On the other hand, sliding doors have a thick glass and insulated frames to offer better energy efficiency, adds Bansal.

Cover Story ROLE OF DOOR & WINDOW MATERIALS IN ENERGY CONSERVATION Apart from lowering heating and cooling bills, technology has played a big role in enhancing the energy efficiency features of doors and windows. This helps in keeping the homes cooler in summer and warmer in winters. Features like thick glass coating, improved thermal control, etc. significantly reduce energy consumption for temperature maintenance, points out Bansal. Doors and windows contribute 30-45% of energy loss in a building and here the role of effective glazing comes which can also name as energy efficient glazing. This can improve the energy efficiency of building/homes, reduce the monthly electricity bills and decreases the carbon footprint, observes Visen. Low-E glass is the most popular glass for energy conservation. Apart from these, other glasses with excellent solar control properties and superior protective coating plays an important role in energy savings. Jha too agrees that the materials

used for fenestration play a big role in energy conservation. For external windows and doors, perhaps the reference is more about glazing door, looking at the features like performance glass having a right U value, solar heat gain coefficient and light transmission, which are very important. Getting all the above in right proportion is key to energy conservation. Visual Light Transmittance in right numbers is very important for daylight and energy both, opines Jha. Low E-glass has maximum heat deflection, it means a very low U value, it stops the temperature from passing the glass, which gives it an edge over other window treatment options. The U value which is a measure of the rate of heat loss is expressed in watts per square metre, per degree Kelvin. Lower U values can be attained if there is a use of multiple glazing layers, gases, and low e-coating. This also provides water tightness during the monsoon season. Even in dry and dusty areas, these windows are ideal because of their dustproof performance. uPVC is the ideal material for windows and doors when it comes to energy conservation, says Schmidt. Contrary to the above points, Varghese observes that in a building, the impact of doors and windows in terms of energy conservation is less, as the area

occupied by such elements is lower in comparison to the total peripheral area. However, in the case of commercial buildings with fill glass façade, the impact is high. According to Kartik Gandhi, Director, Gandhi Automations, by ensuring doors are kept closed for the maximum time, with good perimeter sealing when closed, energy and temperature losses through doorways can be reduced, optimum operating rhythms can be achieved, and cross-contamination risks can be minimised. However, in a facility with significant traffic movements, be it pedestrians, forklifts or trucks, maintaining closed doors without serious disruption to your operations can be an Operations Manager’s nightmare! EFFECTIVE GLAZING & TYPES OF GLASS FOR BEST PERFORMANCE Effective glazing cuts down heat transfer and also controls temperature, humidity, sunshine and wind as per the location. Glazing also enhances the beauty of the home, says Bansal. There are various types of glass option for the effectiveness of glazing like: floated glass, tinted glass, reflective glass, tempered glass and shatterproof glass. Each glass has a unique quality and its suitability is dependent on the environmental factors as well as user’s preferences.

Cover Story Buyers are looking for solutions that save energy, are sound proof, low in maintenance, fire retardant, attractive, and have a long life. Primary heat losses or gains from a window or doorframes occur via air infiltration and thermal conductions, and to overcome this, uPVC is one of the best solution, advices Visen. Usually, a major amount of energy loss takes place through single glazed windows; but if one uses the double glazed uPVC it reduces energy loss to an extent, observes Schmidt. These windows have thermal insulation even without expensive special glasses, thus reduces energy loss. Smart glazing for windows is using the right kind of glass with the right quality of the frame which increases the efficiency and is a vital element because it provides light, security and helps in noise control. The options one can consider are tinted, low-e, double glazed and much more. Also, the right glazing can also let in light and enhance the view. Glazing surely helps in efficiency when it comes to heat gain or heat loss.

Tall residential building, Mumbai by Gensler

For the best selection of glass for a door, one should consider: A. Light Transmission (LT) – Glass units should have a high LT. Usually one has to look at a glass combination with 60 percent LT. B. U value and shading coefficient (SF) – For increased energy saving, a glass combination that can provide a U value of around 1.2 and a shading coefficient of 0.25 is recommended. A glass that fulfills these parameters with a light transmission of 60 percent or above is an ideal choice. (Varghese PV, CEO, Glazing and Metal Works, Sobha Ltd)

IMPACT OF TYPES OF GLAZING ON ENERGY CONSERVATION & SELECTION OF THE RIGHT TYPE OF GLAZING There are several types of glazing materials, which are applied to the windows and doors as per the need of the customer. When it comes to differentiating between single pane and double pane glasses, then double pane always tops the list as they are more energy efficient and easily available in the market, notes Bansal. Nowadays, the innovative triple pane is also available in the market. They reflect 97 percent of energy and only allow 3 percent to pass through. Lastly, sandwich glass, the most efficient one, comes in various shapes and colours. Conduction occurs easily with single glazing, observes Jha, as there is only one layer of glass between the inside air and outside air, allowing energy to escape more readily. Double glazing is the installation of two sheets of glass, with spacer bars fixed around the edge to keep the panes apart. Between the two glass sheets is a layer of insulated air; this air space is often filled with an inert gas such as argon. Triple glazing is the installation of three sheets of glass, with spacer bars positioned around the edge. Again, each sheet is a layer of insulation air. Triple glazing

is certainly better from the energy conservation perspective. Visen too notes that a single pane of glass provides very poor insulation because glass is a good conductor of heat. Using double glazing with a layer of air or argon gas trapped between two panes of glass is much better since air or argon gas is a poor conductor of heat, and much less heat is lost through the window. If the inside of one sheet has a low-E coating, lesser heat is lost since the coating reflects heat back into the room. In triple-glazed windows, the three sheets of glass may have two air gaps filled with argon. These windows offer 28% - 30% (approx.) more insulation than a doubleglazed window. It also decreases thermal transfer by 75% - 80%, making it the most energy-efficient option around. It also mitigates noise. Therefore, triple-glazed windows perform all the functions of double-glazed windows, but with more effectiveness. They are just marginally more expensive. Laminated glass is two or more panes of glass with one or more layers of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) sandwiched between them and treated. It is most suitable wherever safety, security, noise control or UV control is a requirement. Ideally, we need to have a

natural shading at the window area that no direct sunlight can reach the glass, suggests Schmidt. Having that we can use a transparent glass and during the day time, artificial lighting can be reduced, which will help in saving cost and protect the environment. Overall, it is important to find the balance between solar factor and light transmission for the best performance. According to Varghese, these are three aspects to consider for efficient fenestration: • Selection of a highperformance glass with low U value and shading coefficient. • Adopting a process like double glazing with more space in between (24 – 32mm) and filling the space with inert gas. • Adopting an overall glazing system with proper gasketory to resist the heat ingress. One can also go for a thermal break system. ADVANTAGES & LIMITATIONS OF USING SOLAR CONTROLLED GLASS & SELF-CLEANING GLASS The solar controlled glass allows only a specified fraction of solar radiation energy to pass through, providing illumination, but helping to prevent overheating, which is great for energy conservation, says Jha.

82

WFM | MAY-JUNE 2019

Self-cleaning glass really is no myth as its special coating breaks down organic dirt, whilst reducing the adherence of inorganic dirt, compared to conventional glass. May be next-generation solar controlled glass and self-cleaning glass will be more popular, currently they have limitations, hopes Jha. Self-cleaning glass is a distinctive type of glass that needs minimal maintenance because its surface has been designed to keep itself free from dirt and grime. It helps in saving time and energy that goes into keeping windows looking great and has encouraged many homeowners to make the change to self-cleaning glass, notes Bansal. “The self-cleaning glass is an advantage as you do not have to worry about cleaning or hire someone to do the job so it saves your time as well as money,” says Schmidt. For instance, in a glass conservatory, the self-cleaning glass is ideal as it reduces the solar glare and they are also energy efficient when the heat reflects the inner coating. The disadvantage is that though it self-cleans, it does not always look very clean as expected. You have to depend on either the sunlight as well as rain to do the job. Also, you will still need to clean your windows from inside.

KEY FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHILE SELECTING HARDWARE FOR DOORS Any hardware selection should be primarily based on specification and suitability, points out Visen. Like adjustment to frame cutting size, it should penetrate reinforcement or special anchorage points, it should pass the life cycle data, it should meet the expected corrosion resistance standard and it must meet the basic security requirement. While considering the door hardware, one should always recall the home security as the door locks, handles and latch are the prominent part of the interior while selecting the hardware for doors, points out Bansal. Apart from this, an individual should consider the door designs that need to be used. One may possibly desire for matching chrome door handles for consistency, whereas others would like to differentiate the interiors with different handle designs for added design advantage. According to Jha, the key factor is the usability of the space. “If I have to select the hardware of a fire door, I will ensure that the hinges, vision glass, door closer, etc. everything should have a similar fire rating (30 min, 60 min, 90 min or 120 min)

Advantages of solar controlled glass: • Solar control glass moderates heat gained and shine of light entering the room and provide a relaxed environment for living. • They permit the light to pass through them, so the usage of artificial lights is also optimised. Advantages of self-cleaning glass: Self-cleaning glasses are recommended for obstinate spaces that are challenging to reach, such as areas on the roof. In case of limited mobility, self-cleaning glass is considered to be a worthy investment. The coating lasts for a lifetime and may significantly contribute to refining the appearance of conservatory over time. (Manish Bansal, Director, Window Magic India)

Hinges: When selecting a hinge, check if all the screws are within the window so that it is not visible outside and no rain or water can enter. It should also be able to take the required weight capacity, according to the design of the doors and windows. The designs of the fixing positions of the screws are made in such a way that no screws are visible on the outer surface and no screw is attached to the area where rain or water can enter. All the screw points should be ideally within the window only. Friction Stays: This is a hardware which is used for outside opening and top hung windows.

Tilt & Turn Hardware: This is used for inside opening windows and doors. A special sliding system with great hardware options can also be considered. 1. The market for Fire Doors in India: There is no dedicated fire safety code that India follows. The National Building Code which is not exactly followed by all jurisdictions in India has a Part 4 of its volume 1, which deals with safety from fire. It also covers provisions relating to fire protection of buildings through portable and fixed firefighting installations. For ensuring compliance of fire

and the hardware as well. According to Varghese, with the recent revision of the national building code, the fire safety norms have become stringent. From just a fire exit door, now the requirements include fire shaft, plumbing shaft, ventilation shaft, hub room, etc. This will extend to other areas as well with time. “With the latest norms, the major airports, rail terminals are set to go through the overall changes and fire doors will be in great demand. The seriousness around fire life safety is set to grow”, says Jha. According to Gandhi, growing awareness of building safety and initiatives to minimise property damage during a fire accident

There are currently no certification or mark schemes for fire rated doors in India. Fire doors shall comply with the following requirements as per NBC 2016: a) Fire doors shall be constructed of non-combustible material having appropriate fire resistance, and two fire doors may be fitted with an opening if each door by itself is capable of closing the opening and the two doors together achieve the required level of fire resistance. b) All fire doors shall be fitted with an automatic self-closing device of same fire rating as of the door, which is capable of closing the door from any angle and against any latch fitted to the door.

doors has two parts: IS 3614 which is the specification for fire-check doors (Part 1); which was published in 1966 defining plate, metal covered and rolling type; and (Part 2) which was published in 1992 about metallic and non-metallic fire check doors and defines the resistance test and performance criteria. Due to these old standards, projects in India, where fire safety is a priority, international standards published in the USA like UL 10B, UL 10C; standards published in Europe EN 1634 (revised in 2018) or standards published in UK BS 476 part 22 (published in 1987) are used sometimes. The market for fire doors in India is still working to learn that if a manufacturer has a test report for a fire door - it only means that the given sample they prepared specially for a fire test passed a fire resistance test. Only certain projects (like some metro stations or airports) have consultants who use the certification and listing as a means to check conformity to fire resistance properties of doors which are manufactured and supplied.

high exposure to excessive heat or cold should be well insulated with the least amount of wall openings. In fact, the best examples of these could be seen in our heritage buildings! The second level of thermal efficiency is the result of fenestration and is dependent on the design and

its material selection. Fenestration materials and glasses can be selected to impact medium to high insulation. Materials like wood, uPVC & thermal break aluminium can have better U-value. Similarly, glasses should be, low E coated, double or triple glazed to achieve lower U-value! Reflective glasses

Some of the experts are even debating the use of reflective glasses and their impact on the environment! How do you analyse the impact of types of glazing on energy conservation and select the right type of glazing? Higher the insulation required, more is the number of glass panes with air/inert gas in-between the glasses to have reduced U-value. industry! The story is similar with the selfcleaning glass! The cost makes it premium and is now widely used in spectacles and in in-house glass utilities! For large façade glasses, its bulk usage is yet to be witnessed!

What are the advantages and limitations of using solar controlled glass and self-cleaning glass on doors and windows? Solar controlled glass is a relatively new concept in India, though the technology exists in Europe and Japan. So far, it has limited market potential in India due to its prohibitive cost. Even in Europe, this has not been something which has just kicked off! It can be presumed that with the technology maturing as a result bringing the cost down, it will see major growth in the façade

What are the key factors to consider while selecting hardware for doors? The primary factors for choosing the appropriate hardware depend on several factors. Primary among those are: a) Usage area – The environment of the area where the proposed door is being installed. Is the region a coastal area? Does it have a corrosive environment? Basis these considerations, the ideal material of the hardware should be chosen from the likes of Zn/Ni coated or SS304/316 or Engg Plastics among

others. b) Endurance need - Whether the area is situated in a residential or commercial segment. Depending on the answer to the question, the chosen hardware should have durability for 20,000 up to 200,000 cycles’ tests. c) Usage type – The choice of hardware is dependent on several functional features. Whether the door in question is an important security fixture or a general opening? Whether it needs a simple closing/locking or can be non-locking? All of these define the type and level of hardware needed along with basic functionality and lock or security/alarm integration. Please brief on fire safety and door designs? What are the key aspects to consider? A fire door is a door with a fire resistant rating (sometimes also referred to as a fire protection rating for closures) used as part of the passive fire protection system. It reduces the spread of fire and smoke between separate compartments of a structure and to enable these an egress from the building. Building regulations specify that in homes over two-story, every door of a habitable room leading to a stairwell must be a fire door (this does not apply to toilets or bathrooms). Fire doors are also required between the house and the internal garage. Fire doors are given a fire resistance rating and are usually made of a combination of glass, gypsum, steel, timber and aluminium. Some fire doors have windows in them, which can be made from wire mesh glass, liquid sodium silicate, ceramic glass or borosilicate glass. Fire doors will have automatic closing devices (fire door closures) fitted. Moreover, fire doors are usually fitted with three specific hinges to manage the weight of the door and to prevent it from warping.

P

lease tell us about your firm Rajinder Kumar Associates (RKA)? Our firm was established in the early 1970s by my father Rajinder Kumar, and it is regarded as one of the leading architecture, planning, landscape and interior design firms in India. We have been practicing in India and abroad for nearly five decades. My father had practiced architecture under the able guidance of the team of Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanerette for many years, designing several important buildings in the capital city of Chandigarh. He worked closely with these stalwarts and had a very close relationship with them. In the late 1960s, Rajinder Kumar forayed into the tourism industry and designed tourist accommodation in the hilly areas of northern India. Five decades later RKA has contributed more to the tourism industry in India than any other architect, by designing the largest number of hotels in the country. We have designed hotels across the country, and abroad, in every category, from budget to 7-Star luxury hotels, for virtually every major hotel developer in the country and for practically every major Indian and international brand.

Designing hotels gave our firm the expertise to create a very high standard of design and detailing, exposure to international design, technology and materials that few Indian firms had. This made RKA the natural partner for many multinational corporations that entered India post liberalisation in the mid1990s. We got opportunities to design corporate offices for CocaCola, Motorola, Ericsson Microsoft, Cadence design System and ABB. I joined the firm in the early 1990s after finishing my Master of Architecture degree at the University of Pennsylvania and working in the United States for

a few years. The work experience helped me to understand the design needs and aspirations of international companies setting up offices in India. As the economy grew, major Indian corporations commissioned us to design their headquarters in India, including Maruti-Suzuki, Bharti, Reliance, Ranbaxy, Hindustan Lever and ITC. Our experience in the hospitality and corporate world helped us to eventually create one of India’s first “Platinum rated Green Building”- The ITC Green Center in Gurugram. My experience and education of urban design helped us to handle large and complex projects and create large campus designs for major technology companies such as HCL technology, Tech Mahindra, NIIT, Ascendas (Singapore) and many leading real estate developers. Alongside these large campuses, we got opportunities to design housing complexes for major developers in the north and central India. One of our design studios continues to create distinctive designs for housing in all segments across India in cities like Gurgaon, Noida, Kolkata, Lucknow, Nagpur, Bengaluru and Mohali. In the last 10 years, we extended our hospitality skills to create two of India’s most talked about

Face to Face specialty hospitals; The Fortis Memorial at Gurgaon and the recently launched Apollo Proton Care Cancer Center at Chennai. Today, our work spans across all parts of India and abroad with designs in cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Trivandrum, Kochi, Mysore, Pune, Guwahati, Raipur, Ranchi, New Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon.

Overseas, we have successfully completed projects in Muscat (Oman), the Philippines, London, Sunnyvale (California), Doha and Bhutan. You have been in the industry for the past 25 years. How the façade industry has changed over the years? We have seen a tremendous

change in the façade industry over these 25 years. Our firm’s early works in the 1970-80s were largely masonry buildings using brick and natural stones of India. In the early 1990s, it was the first time one moved away from masonry façades and started getting technologies like curtain walls, aluminium claddings, glass and metal claddings, etc. We combined these new technologies with traditional Indian materials in a very contemporary manner that made our façades unique and appealing to many of India’s best developers and corporations. We became one of the pioneers in Green building design in India with the project "The ITC Green Centre," built in 2003, declared as first platinum-rated green building in India. Because of the awareness on green and sustainable designs, suddenly there came to a new shift again in the last decade, where one started looking at limited use of glass and all that one learned from traditional architecture started to come back using modern technologies for design and construction. Of course, today's challenge is meeting the aspirations of developers and clients to create façades that are international in character but still work in the Indian context. Could you please tell us about some of your projects and the materials that you use in your façade designs? One of the things that our firm takes pride in is to design façades that can use any kind of material. We are not bound with the use of a specific kind of material, and we want our every building to appear different. We use all kinds of materials - from brick to stone, glass, plaster, aluminium, metal and a combination of new and traditional materials using various technologies. Each project is made to suit a particular budget and scale. In the 1980s and 90s, we did

a lot of hospitality projects with natural stones, and recently we have done 4-5 projects with plaster and very limited use of glass. The choice of material depends on that particular project location, budget and climatic response. We are comfortable in using any number of materials, but we try to get sustainability, longevity and are particular that the design should bring the desired impact, which is mandated by the client.

Could you please tell us about some of your recent projects in which you have used a special kind of faรงade? Recently, we have finished the design for the Indian Institute of Management in Nagpur. For this project, we are using a very special terracotta tile faรงade, which forms the major exterior, along with a kind of plastic concrete finish plaster. This modern technology of using terracotta faรงade along

with the little bit of curtain wall and a system of louvers made of aluminium is going to create a very special appearance. It will give all the benefits of natural ventilation and will also protect from the strong sun. It was the one project where we were excited to provide a sustainable environment without overspending on-air-conditioning in an educational institution (air conditioning is a big energy guzzler in educational institutions). While designing institutes like this one, one needs to plan such that they will function seamlessly for decades. We are trying many techniques of natural ventilation like openable windows, louvers, varied window positions and the optimum sizing of windows for different functions of the institute. Large shading roofs with solar panels make interesting university walks and shade the building faรงade on both sides. What is the role of faรงade consultants? When we started doing buildings with the external skin and curtain

walls, we did not have the option for specialised façade consultants for that. We, as a firm, had to educate ourselves, do lots of research, visit world-class buildings, study good technologies, manufacturing plants and projects all over the

world, and train our own team to have that expertise. The kind of level of skills that we have to detail external skin on buildings is sometimes far more than expected from most architectural firms. Nowadays, there are specialised consultants who have worked on special projects with us, and for most others, we still ourselves do the detailing of them. It is essential for any top quality project to have a team of experts. For special projects and high-rise buildings, we have worked with a lot of groups in India and overseas who have expertise in façade engineering. Façade consultants help the architects realise their vision of expressing the façades while giving the users a safe and comfortable environment inside the building. What are the things to consider while designing façade of a high rise building? The intent of the façade comes from the architectural team in terms of what their expression would be. Just because of their height, tall buildings become the landmark or monumental in their appearance.

One has to be careful about how to make these buildings look lighter. The key factors to be looked upon while designing high-rise buildings are the behaviour of buildings at certain heights considering the wind loads, its impact on the external skins, and the structural challenges of going that high. Application or installation of cladding materials faces many challenges above certain heights and the cost involved also increases with heights. We believe in using the most efficient trends in India and often collaborate with contractors to understand their challenges of buildings of certain heights and we capture them in façade designs. In the end, the design should be buildable in India using locally available techniques and equipment. The requirements of the builders are changing day by day, as they want the iconic buildings. How do you cope up with their demands through your designs? The desire to create iconic buildings must be matched with appropriate budgets and the will

to use the best technologies and agencies to create them. Many cities in India attempt to ape iconic buildings overseas that turn out to be very poor cousins of the originals. We use our best skills to create very high standards of design that are unique using technology and budgets available for projects in India. It is not uncommon to see iconic projects finish in a very different manner as the design of the faรงade gets cut or changed during the execution stage. Tell us about the major projects you have done or currently doing. We have done a number of campus designs for technology companies and developers in India, like the 50-acre campus for HCL Technology in Noida. The faรงades of this project use a combination of metal, and stone combined with a unique landscape gave a wonderful campus design. HCL also gave us the opportunity to design a 100-acre campus in Lucknow where we had to create a campus atmosphere within a much-reduced budget. We are very happy that we have created the first couple of phases for this project using a lot less glass, along with metal and texture paint, with

106

smaller windows and openings. These are business buildings which needed to be done within a very short period of time. The technology of external skins, structures, the kind of glass and panelling system had to be designed and built very fast. In fact, one of the buildings is completely prefabricated using steel technology and was built in a six-month period. Most of these kind of campuses are using extensive green technology today. We make sure that the buildings get a lot of natural light. Almost all these spaces are naturally lit to

Punjab National Bank, Corporate Office - Dwarka, New Delhi

You have been doing projects in different cities with different weather conditions. How do you approach the ventilation of the building or how do you plan the design? We first do a deep study on the climatic conditions of the city. We arrange sessions with the users and get to know the details of the climatic conditions of that particular city. This is the technique we are currently using for our projects - University projects in Nagpur and Mohali where temperatures get very high. Hostel buildings typically have a central corridor with rooms on both sides for higher planning efficiency but often it gets monotonous. Here we have introduced breaks in faรงades that allow natural ventilation. It gives the opportunity to open up the windows and allow natural ventilation in the corridors. We are using this technique effectively in several designs of educational institutions. Tell us about the software you use in your projects. We use the latest CAD & REVIT technology as we model our projects. The architectural software is accompanied by tools of sustainability experts who help us in almost every step of any project using additional software. For almost all our projects, we use the best software to model the buildings and understand how they behave in a different manner and in different conditions. There are many materials available in the market like aluminium PVC etc. How do you incorporate the material for fenestration? For the architects who prefer aluminium, (who are used to a particular material) for windows, it is usually tough for them to switch

Face to Face our design studio and ensure that senior design professionals look at every component in buildings. We take extra protection when we do skin detailing of faรงades to make sure that if in any event the first level fails, there is always an option of second level protection. Our firm always works with the best life and safety consultants in India and abroad.

to other materials. But, we do experiments with new materials all the time on ourselves. We try out these materials in our own homes/offices in smaller projects. Currently, we are using PVC windows in a number of projects, after experimenting and testing them in smaller projects. This has helped us a lot, and now we are using PVC extensively in large housing projects with variations to get different finishes. We are using

the best technologies in both aluminium and PVC in most of our projects. Can an architect specify materials for fire safety? We take this subject very seriously in our firm. Our hospitality projects always demand the highest standards of life & fire safety. We extend this learning and expertise on all types of building projects. We do training and workshops in

What advice would you like to give to the youngsters? In India, a 5-year degree gives one a license to practice through the practical knowledge at that stage is limited. I feel that there should be a compulsory period of working in a firm for a few years before young architects get this license to use. My suggestion would be that the young architects should work with firms for a certain period of time. In firms, you can experience a variety of project cycles done from the concept to the end in a relatively short period. The technology, science and the expectations are so advanced now that unless you have gone through the cycle, you cannot truly understand the building design and construction process.

maintain an aesthetically pleasing environment in market. The new norms will be especially important for reconstruction of shop plots as well as shops-cum-residences that want to avail of enhanced FAR benefits in accordance with the master plan amendments notified last year. According to the new standards, the shops will use frosted opaque glass in light blue colour for façades. However, the owners will be at liberty to decide inner planning and design of a plot. The revised regulation also includes that the shop shutters are to be painted in silver colour. All plastered walls and columns in verandas should have beige colour finish while the wall above the ground floor should have aluminum composite panel cladding of maroonish-red colour. Further, glazing for the façade should be of toughened glass and the width of the show window must be in accordance with that of the shop, leaving a four-inch-wide glass-door entry. and for achieving power efficiency, the market for façades is gaining traction. The ventilated façades market has the largest market share owing to factors such as heat ventilation and soundproofing. On the other hand, basic materials such as glass and aluminium are favoured in the market due to availability, lightweight and cost. Composite materials are also being adopted in the market and are expected to push the market during the forecast period. There has been an increasing demand for green buildings and structures and government from many countries are focusing on building these green structures. The Asia Pacific is estimated to dominate the global façades market over the forecast years and North America, Europe region shows signs of growth potential.
