Matt creates a low-cost hand for third world By Nicola Hyde A HI-TECH artificial hand costing just £200 has been designed by a University of Derby student hoping to help lower arm amputees in the Third Word. The 'Myo' low-cost prosthesis is one of a range of new products created by the University's final year students, which went on display at the New Designers 2014 exhibition, at London's Business Design Centre. Matt Thompson, 24, who has just completed a BSc (Hons) Product Design Engineering degree course at Derby, designed his Myo hand with developing and Third World countries in mind. He said: "Disease and war unfortunately means there's a lot of demand for prosthetic limbs in poorer countries. “Researching the subject, I found out that upper limb prostheses are more complicated and expensive than lower limb ones, and also that good ones are beyond the financial reach of most people living in those countries. "It cost me about £200 in materials to build the Myo hand. It's made of a tough nylon resin called Zytel with non-

slip grips for the fingers. The fingers are fully articulated and what will really bring the cost of the hand's electronics down is that I replaced the many individual motors for different actions, with just two, which will work off a rotating disc in the Myo's wrist." The arm would be controlled through the use of electromyography, a system used for many artificial limbs. “Three electrodes will run from the Myo hand to the real upper arm of the amputee, who would be taught to control the prosthetic hand using the upper arm's individual muscle movements. Matt will now work on developing a fully-functioning prototype. He added: “I don't think anyone else has managed to create a low-cost artificial hand where, effectively, one control disc could make all of the hand's fingers move independently. “I'm hoping the Myo can be refined and mass marketed, to bring its costs down even further. “I believe it could make life a lot easier for many upper limb amputees in poorer parts of the world.”

A team of German designers have created life-like body parts from silicone that most people can’t tell are prosthetics. Alex Stamos and Christoph Braun created Stamos Braun Prosthesenwerk six months ago in Dresden and work with patients for prosthetics tailored to their needs Christoph Braun, who has 18 years’ experience creating traditional prosthetics, said the prostheses vary in the time they take to craft, depending on the type of limb required and the level of customisation needed. The prosthetics range in cost from £1,460 to £5,000.

A MAN who lost his hand in a nightclub bombing has been named a finalist in a prestigious award category for overcoming adversity.

The victim of a nightclub bomb attack in 1985, which resulted in the loss of his right hand, Stephen spent almost two decades struggling with cumbersome, cosmetic and mechanical prostheses before being selected to trial the bebionic3 by Musgrave Park Hospital’s Regional Disablement Services.

Stephen said: “In the early days following the amputation I really struggled to come to terms with my new life and the limitations imposed upon me as a result of the attack. Losing a limb completely felt like the end of the world, but, as time went on, I came to realise that things

didn’t have to be that way. “I want to raise awareness about this type of disability and share my experience with people who may be facing those same tumultuous emotions that I did all of those years ago. It’s so humbling to be chosen for an award such as this – each and every nominee was so deserving – I’m completely stunned to have been nominated and shortlisted for the finals.”

Kiera gets on her bike for challenge THE chief executive of a charity set up to raise money for amputees plans to lead by example and has set herself a fitness challenge. Kiera Roche, of LimbPower, aims to cycle from London to Amsterdam in September to raise £2,000 for the charity. She said: “I talk to, meet and watch amputees on a daily basis and it staggers me the impact losing a limb can have on a person and what a struggle it can be to get back to normal. “For some it is a daily struggle with physical pain or emotional pain, for others it is socket comfort or fit, reduced body image, self esteem and depression. “Every year I set myself a new challenge to help others and support the charity I founded. I need a challenge to keep me fit. I want to lead by example to show that a normal person like me, with a job and children can still keep fit and active, live a full life.”

First sports event to take place in London By Nicola Hyde AN international sporting event has been announced for wounded and injured servicemen and women. Mobility specialists Ottobock has been announced as official technical service provider for the first ever Invictus Games – presented by Jaguar Land Rover. The company will repair equipment such as wheelchairs and prosthetic limbs damaged in competition, and will also support the British Armed Forces team. Over 400 competitors from 14 nations will take part in the games, with teams coming from the armed forces of nations that have served alongside each other.

A JOINT venture from Dorset Orthopaedic and Ottobock has provided a teenager with a revolutionary sports blade so she can continue her Paralympic swimming dream. Emily Harris, 16, is a Paralympic standard swimmer and is earmarked for the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro. Born without the Tibia in her right leg, Emily had her right leg amputated through the knee when she was one year old. Emily relies on a sports blade for her land training such as running and circuit training, in order to reach her peak fitness potential for swimming. Emily’s prosthetic limb is essential for her training, but her previous prosthesis had worn out beyond repair. Dorset Orthopaedic and Ottobock collaborated to donate a specialised sports blade for the athlete after a special request from the Paralympics organisation and Baroness Sue Campbell. Emily’s mum Donna said: “Emily was very lucky that Dorset Orthopaedic and Ottobock heard about her positive outlook and her swimming

aspirations and donated this hightech prosthesis in order to support her training. “Emily loves her new prosthesis and the responsiveness of the blade, it is a massive improvement from her last blade as she has a better range of movement on it and it gives her greater freedom to keep fit and participate in land training.” In order to create a prosthesis specifically suited to Emily, Ottobock donated the hydraulic fitness knee and double curve carbon fibre blade, while Dorset Orthopaedic produced the Comfort Fit SocketTM, manufactured from super lightweight carbon fibre composite. Dorset Orthopaedic managing director David Hills said: “Emily has been a client of ours since she was two years old and we have watched with pleasure as she develops her swimming career. “As she is anticipated for the Rio 2016 Paralympics, this prosthesis will benefit her greatly with her future training, hopefully allowing her to achieve her dreams of representing her country. “We wish her all the best and look forward to watching how she gets on.”

Amputees to tackle the Channel for charity A GROUP of four amputees will be braving temperatures as low as 18°C to swim the English Channel as a relay team in September. The team have already had to complete a continuous swim of at least two hours in open water at Swimmer’s Beach near Dover to prove they are up to the task. Craig Howorth, Stephen White, Jamie Gillespie and Conrad Thorpe will be abiding by the Official Channel Swimming Association rules, which do not make any special dispensations for amputees. The men will not be allowed to wear wetsuits and have chosen not to wear their prosthetic limbs. Stephen, a keen swimmer,

approached Jamie, his prosthetist, to see if he was interested in taking part. Jamie then contacted Conrad and Craig was recruited from a bulletin sent out to members of BLESMA, the limbless veterans charity. Annette Hall, head of fundraising at BLESMA said: “For members to make up the first all-amputee Channel Swim team is something special, but for them to also be fundraising for us is fantastic. Everyone at BLESMA is fully behind them as they attempt this challenge and join me in wishing them the best in their endeavour.” The swimmers are all at varying levels of experience – Craig Howorth, 46, is a right leg below-the-knee amputee after losing his leg in a road traffic

accident in 2006. He had previously served as a submariner in the Royal Navy from 1988 to 1993 and now works as a trail leader for Military Mountain Bikers. Jamie Gillespie, 39, was serving as a Sapper with the Royal Engineers when he was involved in a road traffic accident and lost his left leg below the knee in 1994. He was discharged from the Army in 1995 and has since retrained as a prosthetist and is living in Watford. Stephen White, 49, was serving as a Rifleman with The Royal Green Jackets when a cruciate knee injury led to him losing his left leg above the knee. Stephen was discharged from the Army in 1987 and has since become a chief executive.

Conrad Thorpe, 50, grew up in East Africa and represented Kenya at the Commonwealth Games in 1982. He served in the Royal Marines for 21 years, during which time he was selected for the Special Boat Service and served all over the world with them, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. Conrad damaged his ankle while running which eventually led to an elective amputation in 2011. Jamie is his prosthetist – which is also how he joined the team. AN INTERNATIONAL distance runner who lost his leg when he was hit by a motorbike has not let his disability stop his sporting career. Adrian Howden had a successful sporting career when he lost his right leg in an accident eight years ago and – for the past five years – has returned to competing internationally.

This year saw Adrian achieve a time of 1:20:14, putting him as the second lower limb amputee to cross the finish line and placing him eighth overall in the PT4 category. Anne said: “I am a big believer that disability is no bar to anything, and the greatest disability of all is in fact how some people think. “Polio and PPS has not stopped me fulfilling my sporting or career ambitions and it should not stop people looking good. Just because you use a wheelchair, it doesn’t mean

you can’t be sexy and glamorous and this designer dress is a great way to get that message across. It was a wonderful, liberating feeling to turn a few heads today and challenge some misconceptions about disability, Polio and PPS along the way.” The bespoke dress has been made by haute couture designer Aleah Leigh it took 21 days to produce. She was challenged to deliver a great look, with a ‘wheelchair friendly’ dress and to do this using an unusual material to promote disability in a new and positive way. It is hoped the ticket dress will help Anne and The British Polio Fellowship draw attention to Polio and PPS in the charity’s 75th anniversary year.

Assisted devices stuggling to win over surgeons NEW research claims that robotic and computer assisted devices are struggling to win over orthopaedic surgeons. The research, published in London by GlobalData, says that while marketing drivers will continue to enhance the existing growth trend in the global computer-assisted devices space, computer-assisted and robotic surgery is expected to remain the reserve of top-tier hospitals, mostly in developed countries. The report states that the rising utilization of robotic surgeries will have a minimal impact on the orthopedic power tools market and the cost-effectiveness of robotic devices for high-volume surgeries, such as large joint reconstruction and spinal fusion, remains to be justified. It adds that the current economic climate has resulted in many hospitals feeling reluctant to embrace these modern technologies, as they see a long delay for the equipment to recoup the extensive capital output. 8

Analyst Linda Tian said: “Computerassisted navigation provides an alternative method to improving precision in alignment, and has been recognised as a useful technique in patients with bone deformity. “While navigation has earned increased enthusiasm from the orthopaedic community over the past few years, with applications now evolving for use in hips and knees with less deformity in routine joint replacement surgeries, costeffectiveness remains a significant barrier to the widespread adoption of these devices. “Although the surgical protocol of robotic-assisted procedures is wellestablished, the technology has been slow to gain general acceptance. “As with computer-assisted devices, the lingering issue is the cost of robotic systems, as orthopedic surgeons often question whether the clinical benefits offered by this equipment can outweigh the extra expenditure.”

Exercise benefits arthritis patients, research reveals By Nicola Hyde

A NEW medical study has shown that exercise can have a number of health benefits for patients with knee osteoarthritis. Researchers from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago investigated whether following physical activity guidelines would lead to better results for osteoarthritis patients in terms of health-related utility – a measure of overall health status and quality of life, which is commonly incorporated into cost-effectiveness analyses. Cross-sectional data from 1,908 adults with or at risk for knee osteoarthritis was assessed in the study, with physical activity measured using seven days of monitoring via motion sensors. According to results published in the journal Arthritis Care & Research, only 13 per cent of participants met physical activity guidelines, with 45 per cent categorised as completely inactive.

Relative to the inactive group, median health-related utility scores were significantly greater for the group that met the physical activity guidelines, while those who were active without meeting the guidelines were still better off than the inactive patients. “We found a significant positive relationship between physical activity level and health-related utility. “Interventions that encourage adults, including persons with knee osteoarthritis, to increase physical activity even if recommended levels are not attained may improve their quality of life," the researchers concluded.

Firm’s founder awarded CBE THE founder of a world-leading prosthetic technologies company has been awarded a CBE for his work in upper limb prosthetics. David Gow, from Touch Bionics, was named Commander of the Order of the British Empire in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours list. Company spokesman Ian Stevens said: “We are thrilled that David has been recognised for his work in upper limb prosthetic.

A spokesman for Arthritis Research UK said: “Exercise to strengthen the quadriceps muscle in the thigh that supports the knee joint is really important for people with osteoarthritis of the knee in terms of reducing their pain.

“This honour acknowledges David’s dedicated and unique engineering skill in developing the revolutionary ilimb bionic hand which has empowered thousands of patients worldwide with restored function and independence.”

Later in his tenure he was also responsible for the fitting of the world's first electrically powered shoulder. In 2002, Gow led the first spin-out company out from the National Health Service, which later became Touch Bionics. David said: “I am grateful to be recognized alongside so many extraordinary people in the UK. “The CBE award is a great honour and I feel lucky to have been fortunate to work alongside skilled teams of engineers, clinicians and entrepreneurs.”

Team completes Land’s End to John O’Groats challenge By Nicola Hyde A TEAM of four adventurers have completed a world first by travelling from Land’s End to John O’Groats in a straight line – a challenge which took almost a month and included the most extreme coastal, mountain and urban environments in the UK. The Beeline Britain team, including a Paralympian and double amputee veteran, arrived at the UK mainland’s most northerly point after an epic voyage across the country and received a congratulatory phone call from His Royal Highness Prince Harry. Prince Harry said: “You've done a sterling job. I am so glad you've enjoyed it and I am really sad I didn't get to join you.

They kayaked, cycled, mountain biked and hiked their way across the UK, completing two record breaking sea crossings on route, including the longest open sea kayak crossing in the UK; 34 hours of non-stop kayaking. by paddling for over 34 hours and 200km from Land’s End to Pembrokeshire. Beeline Britain then took them on a 150km kayak to Anglesey and then on to the Isle of Man where they had to contend with the TT motorbikes to cycle across the island before kayaking to Scotland.

The four adventurers then cycled across Scotland before mountain biking and hiking across the Cairngorm Mountains. Nick Beighton, Paralympian used specially designed mountain hand-bikes to tackle the rugged Scottish terrain before the four ditched their wheels to hike to the top of Ben MacDui, the UKs second highest peak. Nick, Paralympian, double amputee and Afghanistan veteran, said: “This has been a tough challenge, my body has been blown up and bolted back together again and I know Beeline Britain would test it to its limits. For me I wanted to show how life changing injuries don’t limit your ability to tackle epic challenges and I wanted to raise funds for BLESMA who make a hugely positive impact on injured veterans; I feel we’ve achieved all of those aims.”

One size does not fit all when it comes to assistive technology By Fran Vicray I WAS going to call this article, ‘All I want for Christmas is a new Power Wheelchair’, and detail the process of trialling, prescription, ordering, paying a deposit, then waiting and waiting for delivery. But while I was finding a moment to calculate the exact dates of prescription, deposit and wait, something way more interesting happened. The new, lean, mean street-machine arrived and it was moderately comfortable and only required a few adjustments. But the interesting thing was that, when I started using it no one noticed. It was a bit like dying your hair purple in feminist protest and your friends thinking you’d merely over-done the Thatcheristlook. I thought I must work with the most politically correct people in the universe, who might have noticed but thought it inappropriate to comment. They were merely going about their everyday routine. But then I asked myself, ‘how could you actually not notice?’ It’s like a person with long hair coming to work as a

The aesthetic of the Assistive Technology should match the aesthetic of the person. This can only be achieved when the person has choice over what equipment they use. My key selection criterion for this new power wheelchair was: As light as possible, hopefully less than 100kg. As low to the ground as possible, no ladder climbing just to sit down. As narrow as possible, I don’t live in modified housing. Sexy, lean and smart, the ‘Ferrari’ element to reflect my personality. These were not design features of my previous chair – which I disliked since the day I got it. But unlike a bad

haircut where, you’re stuck with it for four weeks, there’s four to five years between a good and bad power wheelchair. Because my previous chair was high, heavy, obtrusive and just plain ugly, I was determined to get this new one right. Most state funded equipment programmes rate ‘choice’ at the bottom of a long list and have, until recently, only offered a limited range of equipment. There is also the fact that there is limited research and development focusing on making Assistive Technology with increased functionality and style. So while people with disabilities wait

The things for me and most others relate to is the purpose of the device; Who? What? When? Where? Why? Following these principles, I got a piece of assistive rechnology that is stylish, meets my needs and that I like. This is more important than we think because, as the saying goes “you are what you wear”. The Assistive Technology people with disabilities use should reflect their personality and assist in their social, economic and community participation.

It’s also important to reiterate that “one size does not fit all”. Each individual has different requirements, its important they have they’re given as many choices as possible. Beagle Orthopaedic has been around for just a few short years - but has already established itself as one of the go-to suppliers in the industry. It’s commitment to the UK manufacturing industry has seen it move to a larger facility earlier this year, and it already has plans to expand. Nicola Hyde reports.

Company reveals expansion plan after move to larger premises LEN Lloyd was a clinician who has worked in the industry for over 30 years – but after building up the successful company Medistox (which was sold to Ossur) it looked like retirement was on the cards. But six years ago, Len decided to make a return to the industry as MD and owner of Beagle Orthopaedic – a company that was set up to deliberately bridge the gap in what he calls the UK manufacturing exodus. Len is a campaigner – not just for his industry but for people. He wants to secure British jobs – and that is why he made a brave decision to open a UK company which manufactured everything from a home base in the UK. Beagle Orthopaedic set up in 2007 and issued a rallying call for clinicians to ‘buy British.’ Now, it has a new manufacturing base in Blackburn – which has seen the factory double in size - with plans for a further extension next year. Len said: “I wanted a company that wasn’t just about innovation but was

Student Gary’s socket wins prestigious award A STUDENT has won a prestigious award after he designed an adjustable transtibial socket that incorporates slits and a lanyard cord system. Gary Lee won the ‘Work Based Project of the Year’ award in a ceremony held at the House of Commons for London South Bank University (LSBU) students. Gary, who has worked for RSLSteeper for over 17 years, enrolled at LSBU after being offered the opportunity to study part-time for a Foundation Degree in Clinical Technology – hoping to further his career in the prosthetics and orthotics sector by studying more about the mechanics, materials, clinical rehabilitation and manufacturing and design. For his final year project, Gary looked at the issue of socket fit and socket comfort, after being inspired by a lecture delivered by double amputee Sam Gallop CBE. Gary said: “Comfort was quickly identified as being of paramount importance, further substantiated by Mr Gallop’s speech, and so I decided to address the matter in my work based project. “The socket aims to improve quality 12

Charity recreates inconic ad for appeal By Nicola Hyde AN ONLINE spoof of the iconic Levi’s Laundrette advert has been launched by Scope – using one of its charity shops and a disabled model as its star. The advert, based on the 1985 original, shows model Jack Eyers stripping to his boxers in a Scope charity shop, before donating his clothes to its stunned volunteers and staff. The ad has been released online ahead of Scope’s Great Donate summer stock appeal and Jack will also appear on posters for the appeal in Scope’s 230 high-street charity shops. Scope said it hopes that the use of a

disabled model will challenge attitudes to disability. The film follows Scope’s recent End The Awkward ads, featuring comedian Alex Brooker, which have been viewed more than a million times. Model, actor and personal trainer Jack, 25, was born with a rare condition that meant that his right leg didn’t grow, and according to Jack was effectively a ‘dead weight’. He decided to have it amputated at the age of 16. He has previously appeared in adverts for Barclays, and modelled for boohoo.com. Jack also performed at the opening ceremony of the London Paralympic Games, swinging on a rope 35 metres above the stadium.

Charity to offer mobility guidance to families A NEW charity has been set up to offer guidance to families on mobility options for their child. Little Gems Children’s Mobility Charity has been set up in response to families saying they are not getting the full picture regarding their child’s mobility options. The primary aims are to provide information on products; provide access to mobility products on free loan; and to improve products through a system of reviewing and feedback to manufacturers. A spokesman said: “The first aim of providing unbiased information to help families will be outward looking. This means that Little Gems will actively approach all manufacturers so that they can feature their products on the site for free. “There will also be information on charities that can help fund solutions; and exhibitions/shows where they

can see and try products. “The second aim is to help families try out powerchairs, and as funds allow, provide a mobility solution on free loan while they seek funding for their permanent chair. “Unfortunately there are some families that end up with an inappropriate powerchair solution, that may have taken many months to fundraise for. “By giving families the option of trying all the available chairs, and for longer periods, this is far less likely to happen.” The charity is recruiting volunteers and wants to hear from anyone in the industry who may be interested in learning more. Lower limb prosthetics can help kids with disabilities enjoy sport WE have been invited by Össur to contribute to this article and comment on how lower limb prosthetics can help children with disabilities remain active and enjoy sport The two specific questions put to us were: Do you think that the prosthetics available to children has been adequate in the past?

cosmesis; however these modular systems seem not to be as widely used as might be imagined. It is arguable that as children are generally very active and engage in regular higher impact activities and have the most to gain from carbon feet, but have been the last to benefit from new technology.

We have witnessed Prosthetics developing immensely in the past decade. These developments tend to happen initially for the adult amputee population, with a transmission through to the child amputee population over time.

Another important consideration is the way that children’s prostheses, in the absence of any alternative, have traditionally been made. In using conventional methods of Exo-skeletal construction, the result is an unnatural hard outer cosmesis which in some cases looks realistic but always has an unrealistic feel and a prosthesis that doesn’t offer an easy adjustment of length or alignment.

With regard to the first question, up until the advent of the new generation of carbon fibre energy storing feet for children, the only option would have been to fit a Solid ankle cushion heel (SACH) type foot, these mimicked the foot ankle motion but provided little or no energy return.

Sometimes there is no alternative to a conventional prosthesis for a particularly complex problem. However, the ability “today” to produce modular prostheses for children allows much easier maintenance, socket change or adjustment to length and alignment as well as a softer more aesthetic

Why do you think an improvement in child prosthetics has come about?

If we are to consider children with the loss of a limb above the level of the knee, the provision of knee joints still remains a difficult area. There is now such a significant gap between child’s components and the adult systems; therefore this as an area still needs significant investment. In considering the second point about improvement in children’s prostheses. Why do you think an improvement in child prosthetics has come about? As an industry prosthetics is materials led when it comes to design; the availability today of lightweight alloys, silicon and carbon composites present us with the option of utilising a modular pyramid system, and access to a range of feet from traditional SACH to carbon fibre energy storing designs. The development in sockets, use of silicone interfaces provides a much improved durable stump socket environment and enhanced suspension provides more confidence

and offers greater range of activities for children to enjoy. With respect to a very recent foot design the “Variflex Junior”, this has provided us with a much more compliant foot ankle complex with a consequent improvement in gait and more versatile everyday prosthesis. With respect to improvements in cosmesis, the use today of silicone can provide a much improved appearance along with the benefit of being easier to clean and being impermeable to water; therefore these covers are a much more practical solution for children. The 2012 Paralympics created an increased awareness of the benefits of sport within the disabled population. Since the 2012 Paralympics we have fitted a number children with Flex Run Junior blades as dedicated fitness prosthesis. If we consider the benefits; in being able to move more efficiently, the Junior Flex Run has allowed them to engage more actively in school games and what is also interesting is they appear more confident in expressing what they are able to do.

A charity is challenging people to do a mile in style and help to raise money by competing in a ‘manic marafun.’ LimbPower is running the event at Stoke Mandeville Stadium and participants can take part in a mile of the 26 mile challenge. They can choose from a variety of wacky ways in which to complete it whether it be running, walking backwards, cycling, scooting, hulahooping, pushing a day chair or even doing the wheelbarrow with a friend. The Manic Marafun will be held on August 23 and is open to everyone.

System makes World Cup debut A MEDICAL diagnostic system made its first appearance at the World Cup to test the knees and ankles of the players. Argentina’s team doctor Dr Alejandro Rolon worked with Esaote to develop a portable MRI system which could offer ultrasound scanning of injuries ‘on-pitch’ if required. Dr Rolon said: “On the pitch I am able to diagnose not only the muscolotendinous pathologies but also many other bone and joint 16

related injuries. Whilst ultrasound is the main tool, the O-Scan MRI back at the camp will confirm the diagnosis and help me optimize treatment. “This is definitely the trend in elite sport and the future of sports medicine. Being able to instantly and correctly identify and classify the lesion will speed up the athletes’ recovery time. The best opportunity for intervention, treatment and rehabilitation is right after the injury.”

Anatomical Concepts UK Ltd has launched the TEK RMD (Robotic Mobilisation Device) – a new standing and mobility concept that brings practical, healthy standing and convenient indoor mobility to persons with paralysis and limited mobility. A spokesman said: “It's not a wheelchair and it's not a powered standing frame but it achieves the same things in an elegant and practical way.

“People with paralysis need to stand more – and when they want to – ideally without assistance – and continue to stand to perform some functions with hands free. “Robotics has brought a little bit of excitement to rehabilitation recently. British feet are getting bigger and wider, new research finds By Nicola Hyde RESEARCHERS have found that British feet are getting bigger and wider and both men and women admit to wearing incorrectly fitting shoes. Research from the College of Podiatry blames the problem on the growth in online shopping, not having shoes professionally fitted and knowingly buying the wrong size because of fashion or if the shoes are on sale. The research, which was commissioned to mark foot health awareness campaign Feet for Life month, showed that the average shoe size in the UK has increased by around two sizes since the 1970s. Today the average male wears a size ten compared to a size eight shoe 40 years ago; and the average female wears a size six versus a size four in the seventies. Over a quarter of men and 41 per cent of women say their feet have changed size as an adult, with both reporting they have got bigger and wider. 35 per cent of women report their feet have got bigger and 68 per cent say they have got wider. The research also suggests that people may not even know what size shoe they should be wearing, with 17 per cent admitting to never having had their feet measured – even as a child.

A further 62 per cent are not aware that in addition to standard shoe sizes which relate to the length of the shoe, you can also buy shoes in different width fittings. Podiatrist Lorraine Jones, from The College of Podiatry, said: “Feet are getting bigger because as a nation we are becoming taller and we’re increasing in weight. Increased weight gain places more pressure on the feet and means ligaments and joints need to work harder to maintain the foot’s structure and keep you mobile. “Over time if someone is gaining weight the feet splay to try and accommodate the increased pressure, which can cause pain, lead to mobility issues and increase your risk of developing osteoarthritis in the lower limb joints. Whatever your shoe size, the most important thing is to wear a comfortable, well-fitting shoe. “More retailers are introducing wider fitting shoe ranges so if you have wide feet try to opt for a shoe that will comfortably accommodate your foot without causing rubbing or blisters.” The research also showed the average man owns nine pairs of shoes and women typically have 17 pairs. Nearly a third of men and women admit they keep and continue to wear shoes even though they know they don’t fit.

Foot care coordinator Jay wins prestigious award A FOOT care coordinator for charity Age UK has won the prestigious Cosyfeet Podiatry Award. Jay Wasilewski plans to use her £1,000 award to set up an initiative to provide free training on basic foot health to family, friends, volunteers and professionals involved in care for the elderly. Entitled Footcareunited, the initiative will benefit those who are no longer able to care for their own feet, and help prevent them developing serious foot health problems. She said: “Many podiatrists see elderly patients who have developed serious foot problems unnecessarily. “Often, problems could have been avoided if carers had the knowledge and confidence to attend to basic foot health needs. This initiative sets out to provide just that.” Jay, who works for Age UK as Foot

Care Co-ordinator for Chorley, West Lancashire and Sefton, is also a part time Podiatry student at Salford University. She was selected from a wide range of high calibre candidates for this year’s award. “We’re deeply impressed by Jay’s vision and believe she has the knowledge and experience to make a very real difference in this often neglected area of elderly care,” says managing director Andrew Peirce. Now in its ninth year, the Cosyfeet Podiatry Award assists podiatrists and podiatry students to develop their professional knowledge and skills while benefitting others. Cosyfeet was the first British company to make shoes for people with swollen feet. More than 30 years on they still offer the biggest range of extra roomy shoes, socks and hosiery on the market.

Charity launches event in Scotland A NEW event in Scotland has been launched by Disabled Living as an addition to its successful Kidz portfolio. The charity has run the events for 14 year and has added a new, free event that will serve people from Cumbria, the Lake District, right up to the Highlands of Scotland. Around 20 years ago, Disabled Living was part of the equipment services which organised successful children’s seating clinics. A spokesman said: “As the clinics grew, it became very apparent that due to the nature of children’s equipment being so specialised and bespoke, the Disabled Living centres didn’t have enough space to hold this type of paediatric event – and more importantly it was clearly identified that there was a general lack of information and resources where disability equipment and services for children and young adults were concerned.” It launched Kidz Up North, an event specifically focussed on equipment, products, and services to improve

independence and quality of life. She added: “Following feedback from visitors it very quickly became apparent that there was an overwhelming need for these events in other areas, with people travelling from all corners of the UK, Dublin, Jersey, Cornwall and the Orkneys to mention a few.” In 2007 it took the event to Reading for Kidz South, and in 2009 added Kidz in the Middle in Coventry. She added: “For a number of years we have been asked by countless people, both public and professionals if we can bring the Kidz events to Scotland. “This event has taken two years to research, plan and develop. “With over 95 exhibitors this event will be a one stop shop, offering the most up to date advice and information on equipment, products, funding, services and much, much more.” The event will be held on September 11 at Royal Highland Exhibition Centre, Edinburgh.

Conference plans underway PLANS are underway for the BAPO Conference 2015 which will return to The Point at Lancashire County Cricket Club. The event (March 20 to 22) aims to build on the success of this year’s event and will offer companies the opportunity to showcase their products and services. A spokesman said: “Our conference committee are working hard to secure speakers who will engage

with our audience to provide an interesting and stimulating experience for all. “As the premier event for those in both the NHS and private practice, the conference is seen and regarded as the must have date in the diary.” The poster competition will be running again and the Speakeasy will return for students and new graduates.

Royal reception for healthcare experts HUNDREDS of healthcare experts were invited to a royal reception at Buckingham Palace to celebrate recent advancements in technology. Representatives from prosthetic manufacturer RSLSteeper joined guests from technology firms, start-ups and universities around the country, who spent the evening networking with members of the royal family, including the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Duke of Cambridge and the Duke of York. RSLSteeper’s invite came as a result of the global success achieved by their bebionic myo-electric hand – a state-of-the-art prosthetic born out of a project funded by the Technology Strategy Board (TSB). Having entered the TSB’s High Value Manufacturing competition back in 2009, RSLSteeper were awarded £377K to head up a team

charged with developing the most life-like prosthetic hand on the market. From the initial prototype, the Leeds-based company went on to create two more versions of the bebionic, of which the third model has become a worldwide phenomenon – deemed revolutionary by the technology industry and even featuring on this year’s Super Bowl advert. RSLSteeper’s technical director Ted Varley attended the event on the company’s behalf. He said: “The technology industry is advancing at an extraordinary rate and it’s fantastic that events such as this recognise the level of innovation taking place within the UK. We’re delighted to have been invited to take part in what was an extremely interesting and inspiring event.”

Custom made products WE at Beagle recently helped out a patient with “thoracic outlet syndrome”. After spending many years looking for a solution, we have worked closely both with the patient and the clinicians of Corbett hospital to develop a brace to aid the patient (in her own words) to “get her life back”. We designed a custom made glove 18

that works by strapping down the fingers and thumbs to form a fist. This allowed the sport-loving patient to grip a racket again, something she hasn’t been able to do for some time.
