£13.7m new leisure centre opens ahead of schedule
THE much-anticipated Whitchurch Pool & Fitness Centre has officially been completed, marking a significant milestone for the community.
The state-of-the-art facility, developed in partnership with Alliance Leisure and procured through the UK Leisure Framework, opened its doors to the public recently.
The new leisure centre replaces the former facility, which was closed in 2020 due to structural issues.
The new centre boasts a 25-metre, six-lane community pool with a movable floor, a 41-station fitness suite, multi-purpose rooms, accessible changing rooms, and a café.
This modern facility aims to provide vital services to the community, attract visitors from nearby regions, boost economic growth, and create new opportunities for local businesses.
Additionally, five local primary schools will benefit from access to these state-of-the-art facilities.
The building has also implemented a vast range of sustainability initiatives in order to reduce its impact on the environment and be designed to
BREEAM Excellent standards. It has been designed using a ‘Fabric First approach’, whereby thermally efficient cladding, roof structures, and glazing will reduce heat loss.
Further solar panels have been installed on the roof to supplement electricity usage, and highly efficient air source heat pumps will provide heating and cooling within the building.
Robert Macey, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet lead for culture and digital, said: “I am thrilled to see the progress we have made with the Whitchurch Swimming and Fitness Centre.
“The build quality is exceptional, and the range of facilities on offer will cater to all members of our community.
“This project is a testament to our commitment to providing
high-quality leisure services and promoting a healthy lifestyle for our residents.”
The £14m project, funded by the council, and thanks to the collaboration of all parties involved, opened 10 weeks early.
The project was delivered using the UK Leisure Framework, owned and managed by Denbighshire Leisure Ltd, alongside Pellikaan Construction, Roberts Limbrick architects, Greenwoods as the principal designer, and Axiom Project Services as project managers. The centre will be operated by Serco.
Gillian Dunster, business development manager at Alliance Leisure, who oversaw the project, said: “The new Whitchurch Pool & Fitness Centre is a testament to what can be achieved through early, successful collaboration.
“This incredible new facility will absolutely revolutionise the way that local residents from Whitchurch and the surrounding rural areas can get active and socialise.
“We have worked closely with the council to develop a facility mix that befits the community’s needs, and we can’t wait to see the centre fulfil its objectives upon opening.”
Operator launches women’s only gym at centre
OLDHAM Active (Oldham Community Leisure) has opened a women’s only gym at Chadderton Wellbeing Centre.
The new dedicated workout space, which is open daily, is located on the ground floor and has a full range of cardio and strength training equipment.
The area is staffed only by female team members and is available for women aged 16 plus.
The new women’s only gym is in addition to the existing gym and studio facilities at the centre.
Lauren Connis, health and fitness brand manager at Oldham Active, said: “The feedback gathered through customer surveys was that some women prefer to exercise in women only spaces.
“Oldham is very diverse town, with multiple faith groups living and working across the borough, and Chadderton has a high percentage of its population from the Bangladeshi and Pakistani communities.
“Our health and wellbeing programmes must reflect the community we serve.
“This space has been designed to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for women from all walks of life to enjoy, and
we are working closely with local community groups and district partnerships to ensure it meets the needs of those who will be using it.
“We are also committed to training and upskilling local women so they can play an active role in supporting and shaping this space.
“In the coming months we will be rolling out a range of sessions and seminars focused on women’s health. From the benefits of strength training to postmenopausal heart health. To
ensure we reach as many women as possible we will be taking our seminar programme out in the community too.”
The exclusive women’s only space follows the success of Oldham Active’s ongoing and popular Women’s Only Wednesdays at Chadderton Wellbeing Centre, where every Wednesday morning there is women only access to swimming, the sauna and aquacise, as well as group classes such as aerobics, Body Pump and Zumba.
Stuart Lockwood,
chief
executive of Oldham Active, the charity operating leisure facilities across the borough, added: “The women’s only space was formerly used as a spin studio, but following the success of Women’s Wednesdays we have taken the decision to invest in a dedicated gym space exclusively for women, to encourage more women in the local community to lead active, healthier lives.”
The women’s only gym is open daily: Monday to Friday from 6.30am to 9pm and Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 5pm.

Skelcore’s folding reformer brings Pilates to gyms, hotels and wellness spaces
DESIGNED for quick deployment and easy storage, the folding reformer helps fitness facilities integrate Pilates without disrupting existing programming.
For many gym owners, adding new programming like Pilates comes with a major hurdle: space.
Dedicated reformer studios require significant square footage, making it difficult for fitness facilities to justify the investment.
Skelcore, a Miami-based fitness and wellness company, has introduced a folding Pilates reformer designed to solve this challenge.
With a compact design, the reformer allows gyms, hotels and multi-use fitness spaces to offer Pilates classes without sacrificing floor space or disrupting existing programming.
Marc Ackermann, founder and CEO of Skelcore, said: “With 53,000 gyms in the US alone, many have studios that could increase their return on investment by offering Pilates as a strength modality.”
The reformer’s portability makes it a practical option for gyms and other facilities with limited space.
“These reformers can be stacked safely against a wall and deployed within seconds for Pilates classes,” added Mia Bustamante, Skelcore’s product manager for Pilates.
The folding Pilates reformer is available in
lightweight aluminium, American maple and oak.
Skelcore has also launched a range of traditional Pilates reformers, available in aluminium, oak, walnut and Canadian maple, along with an XL version in Canadian maple.
Skelcore also offers more than 50 different leather upholstery colours, allowing fitness facilities to tailor the equipment to their branding or design preferences.
Each reformer is built with six German-made piano wire springs for smooth resistance and aluminium tracks to enhance glide and performance.
The design includes two rows of adjustable
resistance hooks, allowing for customisable tension levels. The reformers feature microfiber leather upholstery and double-looped straps, enabling a wider range of exercises.
Additionally, each reformer comes with a jump box to expand workout options and a safety strap for secure storage when not in use.
Skelcore has made its Pilates reformers available in 45 countries, allowing gym operators worldwide to explore Pliates as a growing revenue stream.
The company’s showroom in Miami now features the full range of reformers, giving potential buyers the opportunity to evaluate the equipment firsthand. Its expansion into Pilates aligns with its broader growth in the fitness equipment industry.
The company, founded in 2020, has rapidly gained recognition, securing a global licensing deal with Powerhouse Gyms International last year as a preferred equipment provider.
With its new folding Pilates reformer, the brand is further positioning itself as a versatile provider for gym owners looking to maximise space and diversify their offerings.
The Pilates range is available to order from CYC Fitness, official distribution partner for Skelcore in the UK and Ireland.

WILTSHIRE Council has announced its construction partner, Pellikaan Construction, for the new Trowbridge Leisure Centre, which is being delivered by the Council’s development partner Alliance Leisure.
Pellikaan Construction are well known to the council, having previously delivered the highly regarded Melksham Community Campus, which opened in 2022.

The new leisure centre will feature highquality materials, including glazed facades and a prominent entrance to greet visitors.
Its modern, industrial design will reflect Trowbridge’s heritage, while accessibility will be central to the interior layout.
To align with the council’s carbon-neutral goal for 2030, the building will be energy-efficient, utilising a fabric-first approach, and solar panels will help power the all-electric facility.
The surrounding landscaping will create a green space in Trowbridge with walking, cycling and
wheeling routes.
The new facility will include:
n A six-lane, 25m swimming pool.

n A gym with 120 exercise stations.

n A café.
n Adventure play area targeting young people (ages 12-16) with TAGactive activities.
n A ‘Live Well’ suite for older adults to exercise.
Councillor Ian Blair-Pilling, cabinet member for leisure and public health, said: “Yet another milestone has been reached on this project, which has significant momentum – demonstration of our desire and passion to deliver this new leisure centre for Trowbridge and the wider area. We’re delighted to be working with Pellikaan Construction on another significant project, and they showed how professional and communityfocussed they are with their work on the hugely popular Melksham Community Campus.
“The location of our new leisure centre in Trowbridge will not only provide quality health, fitness and wellbeing facilities for our communities and help unlock wider work in
the area to complement our overall vision for Trowbridge and enhance connectivity.
“Work will be getting underway very soon and the whole project team can’t wait to see our vision start to take shape.”
Wiltshire Council has partnered with Alliance Leisure, the delivery partner for the UK Leisure Framework, which is owned and managed by Denbighshire Leisure Ltd, to bring the project to fruition.

The expert project team also boasts Roberts Limbrick architects and Hadron Consulting.
Julia Goddard, regional director at Alliance Leisure, added: “With our extensive experience in developing more than 280 leisure projects, we are committed to leading a team of top-tier experts to create an exceptional new leisure facility for Trowbridge.

Operator begins transformation of Centre
ALLIANCE Leisure has started work on the second phase of an ambitious transformation project at Thorne Leisure Centre for Doncaster Culture & Leisure Trust, some 15 years after completing its first project at the site.
The £5.9million redevelopment, which has received funding from the Sport England Place Capital Fund, aims to rejuvenate the 1960s-built centre, which is rebranded as Thorne Wellbeing and Leisure Hub.
Sean Nolan, business development manager at Alliance Leisure, said:
“This is a huge transformation for Thorne Leisure Centre.
“The enhancements are designed to better align with the needs of the local community while improving the overall viability of the centre.
“Ultimately, the upgrades will ensure the building and its services remain fit for purpose for the future.”
Phase two will introduce a variety of modern fitness, play and leisure facilities tailored to meet the needs of the local community.
The underutilised sports hall is being repurposed into a 10-pin bowling alley by Bowling Vision, featuring six bowling lanes and a family entertainment zone.
The exciting addition introduces a new entertainment destination to the area and follows the success of the Kingpin Bowling Alley at Adwick Leisure Centre, which Alliance Leisure previously delivered for the Trust.
The ground floor will also feature an adventure play space created by Play Revolution, alongside the centre’s first dedicated food and beverage facility, providing a social space for visitors of all ages.
A new mezzanine floor is being constructed to accommodate a 55-station gym, exercise studio and modern changing rooms, a consultation room and a powerassisted exercise studio equipped
by Innerva, specifically designed for older adults, those recovering from injury and managing long-term health conditions.
The development is being delivered by Alliance Leisure through the UK Leisure Framework, which is owned and managed by Denbighshire Leisure Ltd.
The project team includes architects Bradshaw Gass & Hope, contractor Speller Metcalfe and project managers Abacus CM.
The project is scheduled to complete by the end of the year. Phase one, which completed in May 2024, included the full refurbishment of the building’s fabric and all mechanical and electrical systems, a new building management system in addition to a complete renovation of the pool hall, pool tank and changing rooms as well as a new reception area and viewing gallery.
The pool will remain open throughout the second phase of the development.

ClubRight introduces Google Pay and Apple Pay for faster, easier payments
IN TODAY’S digital world, convenience is king.
Members expect a seamless experience in every interaction with their gym, whether booking a class, renewing a membership, or making a payment.
Now, thanks to ClubRight Pay Card, gyms, studios, and fitness clubs can offer Apple Pay and Google Pay, ensuring frictionless transactions that enhance member satisfaction and retention.
The power of digital wallets
Consumer payment habits are shifting, with digital wallets leading the way.
More than half of all e-commerce transactions globally now happen through platforms like Apple Pay and Google Pay, and that number is only set to grow. For gyms, this means offering digital wallet payments isn’t just a convenience, it’s an essential step toward meeting evolving member expectations.
Every second counts when it comes to sign-ups and renewals.
If a payment process is slow or frustrating, members may hesitate or worse, abandon the transaction altogether.
With Apple Pay and Google Pay, it ensures that doesn’t happen.
Faster checkouts, fewer abandoned transactions
Speed matters. Research shows that even a one-second delay in checkout can reduce conversion rates by up to seven per cent.
Gym members, often booking classes or renewing memberships on their phones, don’t want to waste time manually entering card details.
With Apple Pay and Google Pay, payments are completed in seconds, simply tap, authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID, and go.
For members, this means:
✔ Faster registration, even for lastminute class bookings.
✔ No more card declines due to typos or expired details.
✔ A smooth, modern experience that aligns with the ease of apps they already use daily like Uber, Amazon, and Deliveroo. For gyms, this translates to:
✔ More completed sign-ups and fewer abandoned transactions.
✔ Happier members who don’t get frustrated at checkout.
More
payment options, more revenue
When members can’t use their preferred payment method, they’re more likely to drop off.
Digital wallets provide a seamless alternative to traditional card payments, reducing the risk of failed transactions and increasing conversion rates.
With Apple Pay and Google Pay, members can store multiple cards, selecting their preferred option without re-entering details.
Since digital wallets are set to account for 58 per cent of all online spending by 2030, most members already have them set up and ready to use.
For gyms, this means:
✔ Fewer failed payments due to expired or lost cards.
✔ Greater flexibility, leading to higher membership retention.
Security and trust – a top priority Security is a growing concern for
members when making payments online.
Apple Pay and Google Pay reduce fraud risk by encrypting card details, ensuring sensitive information is never shared with merchants.
Transactions require Face ID, Touch ID or passcode verification, providing an extra layer of protection.
For members, this means:
✔ Confidence in secure transactions.
✔ No hesitation in making payments online.
For gyms, the benefits include:
✔ Fewer chargebacks and disputes, thanks to verified transactions.
✔ Enhanced trust and professionalism, strengthening brand reputation.
Seamless integration for gym owners
The best part? Apple Pay and Google Pay are available immediately for gyms using ClubRight Pay Card.
Existing Stripe users can enable ClubRight Pay directly from the integrations page with just a few clicks, no complex setup required. By embracing digital wallets, gyms are removing payment barriers, improving member satisfaction, and reinforcing their reputation as modern, forward-thinking businesses.

Lift Brands reacquires Snap Fitness master franchise for United Arab Emirates
GLOBAL wellness company Lift Brands has reacquired the Snap Fitness master franchise for the United Arab Emirates as it looks to accelerate its growth in the region.
The operation of Snap Fitness in the UAE will be overseen by Lift Brands’ EMEA support office team, headquartered in London and spearheaded by CEO, Kevin Yates.
As part of the acquisition, Dubai-based Afshad Mistry has been appointed as general manager for the UAE, having held the position for the previous master franchise holder.
As well as a commitment to opening a significant number of new locations in the UAE in the coming years, Lift Brands’ immediate focus is strengthening the four existing Snap Fitness clubs in the region. Modernisation projects are already underway at its Media City and Motor City clubs to enhance the member experience.
Following a record-breaking year for Snap Fitness franchise sales across EMEA in 2024, Lift Brands has already received strong interest for development in the region and will
soon begin its search for ambitious franchise partners in the UAE.
“Reacquiring the master franchise for the UAE is a hugely exciting move for us,” said Kevin.
“The health and fitness club market in the UAE is projected to reach more than $5billion by 2030 and by driving the Snap Fitness brand centrally, it will help us to rapidly capitalise on this.
“2024 was a record year for us across EMEA, with more club openings and new franchise sales than ever before. We’re on a roll right now and we can’t wait to unlock Snap Fitness’ potential in the UAE and significantly grow our presence there.

It is set to open 20 clubs across the EMEA region in 2025 as it cements its place as one of the world’s largest gym franchises.
Operator enhances its sustainability credentials with solar energy plan
THE Bannatyne Group has joined forces with Shawton Energy to implement a solar energy initiative, aiming to reduce costs and slash carbon emissions across several of its UK sites.
With rising energy costs and a renewed focus on corporate sustainability, The Bannatyne Group, founded by Dragons Den star Duncan Bannatyne, identified solar power as the ideal solution to enhance its green credentials and better control operational expenses.
He said: “As a business, we’re committed to reducing our carbon footprint and being at the forefront of environmental responsibility in
our industry.
“Solar power generation is a win-win solution for us and aligns perfectly with our sustainability objectives while also providing certainty on the cost of our energy, which is one of our biggest costs.”
A partnership with Shawton Energy has seen the successful installation of the first solar panels across several health clubs, hotels and spas within the group: Bury St Edmunds, Colchester Kingsford Park, Cookridge Hall (Leeds), Norwich West, Weybridge, Wildmoor, as well its head office in Darlington.
The rollout of 967 panels and 11 inverters, installed across the eight sites, has already produced significant results, with each location securing energy savings of up to 25 per cent.
The long-term environmental impact is set to be substantial, reducing CO2 emissions.
Jamie Shaw, CEO of Shawton Energy, added: ”The Bannatyne Group has shown real leadership in embracing renewable energy, and we are proud to have delivered a solution that aligns with their financial and environmental goals.
“Our tailored approach has ensured minimal disruption to
their operations while delivering significant cost savings and carbon reductions.”
The project involves a fully funded solar solution, with no upfront investment required from The Bannatyne Group, made possible through Shawton’s Power Purchase Agreement.
Under this agreement, Shawton Energy financed the entire installation process, while the Group benefits from purchasing the generated energy at a fixed, lower rate, shielding the business from future energy price volatility.
Sean McNicholas, director of estates and facilities at The Bannatyne Group, added: ”As a health and wellness business, it’s important that we consider not just the services we offer but how we operate sustainably.
“Solar energy helps us address energy costs while reducing our environmental impact.
“For us, the decision to start using solar was about securing longterm savings and supporting our commitment to a greener future for both our business and our members.”

“Like many people into fitness I found myself juggling multiple memberships with a gym in one place, a yoga studio in another, and constantly travelling between them.
“No one was truly connecting the mind and body in a single space. I saw an opportunity to bring everything together, creating a holistic approach to wellness that simply didn’t exist at the time.”
Box Step Fitness has been selected
as sole supplier on the project based on its premium, trend-led equipment and personalised customer service.
Jennifer added: “Box Step Fitness has been the perfect partner on this project. They have provided a personal approach and helped us solve any challenges in creating a truly next-generation gym.

Joe Edwards, founder and CEO of Box Step Fitness, said: “We are delighted to have been selected to work with NOMAD on this progressive project.

Jennifer added: “This facility is unique in that it is committed to supporting as many local independent businesses as possible.
“By doing so, we want to create a community where we can all thrive and ensure that money stays within the area. For me, it’s about building a space where everyone can grow and succeed together. We’ve kept everything as local as possible, right down to the coffee we serve.”

Calls for Government to prioritise physical activity to help economy
THE Government should unlock the potential of a growing physical activity sector to achieve its economic growth ambitions, according to ukactive chair Mike Farrar, who has urged substantial investment into the sector as the NHS promises to move towards more prevention.
He told health and business leaders at the recent Active Uprising conference in Westminster that “a nation that is more physically active will be more economically active”.
The former CEO of the NHS Confederation also announced the publication of a new blueprint, tipped as a vital step towards securing national health, growth and renewal.
The document, shaped in collaboration with Active Partnerships, NHS England, Government officials, Sport England, NHS Horizons and ukactive members, aims to provide the optimal framework to enable the NHS to work with the physical activity sector to build a healthier nation.
Mike, who led the NHS Confederation from 2011 to 2013, strongly encouraged the Government to arrest growing levels of sickness across the nation and to ensure a stronger workforce and economy, identifying that it has the opportunity to invest in the physical activity sector as an evidence-based industry success story.
He said: “As it reaches for quick wins, our government has a great opportunity to stand fore square in support of the industry that sits behind a healthier nation – the physical activity industry.
“I know that the Government can achieve growth through health – a
nation that is more physically active will be more economically active. Any growth plans will need to focus on immediate growth as well as long-term strategy.
“This sector can help deliver on ambitions for economic growth in this parliament. Our industry is growing, but we can, and wish, to do so much more.
“Putting more energy into backing sectors on the up, helping drive greater growth in our sector, will not only have significant economic benefits but also help the NHS – this is a win-win. Our industry is growing, but that progress can be accelerated by taking off the handbrake that’s holding back our sector.
“Social prescribing and building physical activity into care pathways now provide the opportunity for the NHS to address the needs of tens of thousands of people suffering from chronic conditions and to help them avoid costly hospital admissions and loss of independent living.
“This is where the forthcoming 10-year vision for health can really signal a shift in priorities and resources by establishing a new
relationship between the NHS and the physical activity sector.
“If we do not address our population’s worsening health with true preventative measures, our economy will struggle immensely to be supercharged, the way we all hope.”
Mike’s message comes as the Government battles the consequences of a sick nation, with workplace sickness costing £138bn and poor mental health among employees costing UK businesses £51bn a year.
Research from the McKinsey Health Institute and the World Economic Forum, shows that improving employee health and wellbeing could generate up to $11.7tn in global economic value.
At the same time, despite increases in operating costs such as rising energy bills and the upcoming rise in National Insurance contributions, the physical activity sector continues to grow, with research pointing to increasing demand for gyms, leisure centres, sport and fitness services, as consumers prioritise their physical and mental health.
Mike added: “The Government is fully committed to backing growth and that can be translated into real action. Our nation is at a crossroads. Will we now choose true prevention when it comes to our health and wellbeing, and seize the opportunity to place physical activity at the heart of our national renewal?
“As the Spending Review approaches and the Government plans its investment strategy for the future of our nation, this is a golden opportunity to fully engage, and work with us to build a better, stronger Britain.”
The new blueprint from ukactive,
Active Partnerships and partners builds on the Government’s own ambition to shift support from treatment to prevention and hospital to community. It is the first framework designed collectively by the health sector in coalition with the physical activity sector.
The blueprint outlines principles and actions that will support the NHS and its partners to achieve the 10-year vision for health and care. It features eight key components to help ensure the right governance, partnerships, pathways and messaging are being delivered to drive the uptake of physical activity provisions and support the health of local communities.
In the long term, one ambition is for the delivery of the components within the blueprint to put an end to the current ‘postcode lottery’ when it comes to physical activity and health interventions, by enabling the delivery of industry-led physical activity programmes and initiatives to be integrated fully into the health and care system.
Its publication comes at a pivotal time as the Government develops its 10-year health plan that will be published in the near future.
Physical activity helps prevent 20 chronic conditions, including type two diabetes, obesity, heart disease, many types of cancer, MSK conditions, depression and anxiety, and dementia – generating more than £4.1bn in healthcare savings every year.

CoverMe Fitness and LeisureJobs to streamline recruitment
A NEW partnership between on-demand fitness team management and cover solution app CoverMe Fitness and the jobs platform LeisureJobs is set to streamline recruitment for fitness operators.
The partnership aims to make it easier for the UK’s fitness operators, including independent gyms and boutique studios, to recruit qualified professionals to run facilities effectively and maximise member engagement.
Lou Crossland, chief commercial officer at CoverMe, said: “We are excited to be working with LeisureJobs to provide a faster, smarter way for fitness operators to build their teams, secure in the knowledge that their new recruits meet the highest standards of professionalism.
“This partnership provides an efficient and targeted solution for the fitness industry, one that removes the headache of recruitment while
raising the bar for compliance.”
In an initial pilot programme, the two organisations are joining forces to recruit highly sought after personal trainers and group exercise instructor roles for Fitness First, one of the UK’s most recognised fitness brands.
As part of the initiative, LeisureJobs will send job advertisements to its extensive database of fitness professionals. Interested candidates will be seamlessly redirected to the CoverMe website, where they can download the app and create a professional profile in minutes to receive targeted job notifications and recruitment opportunities.
The profile acts as a digital portfolio, showcasing qualifications, experience, specialties and availability – all in one place.
With more than 6,000 fitness professionals already using the app in the UK alone, CoverMe will then send targeted job notifications to
personal trainers, as well as boxing, yoga, HYROX and Les Mills instructors, helping Fitness First to fill roles quickly and efficiently.
The app’s smart algorithm ensures that job notifications are only sent to relevant candidates, allowing Fitness First to connect with the right talent in just 30 seconds.
The partnership not only streamlines recruitment but also sets a new standard in compliance.
All fitness professionals applying through the CoverMe app are required to have up-to-date qualifications and insurance.
This ensures that candidates attending interviews or audition days via the platform are guaranteed to comply with industry standards, giving operators peace of mind and reducing the administration burden of manual compliance checks, saving clubs 10 hours per week.
