New project to improve social connections A NEW project has been established which will benefit the tens of thousands of Armed Forces veterans and their partners living in care homes across England. The Veteran Friendly Framework aims to tackle loneliness and isolation, and deliver improved health and wellbeing outcomes for more than 25,000 veterans living in care homes across England. It will support the practical, emotional and social needs for the Armed Forces community by providing homes with resources to assess and improve their offer. The Framework has been praised by government minister Rt Hon. Johnny Mercer MP and Professor Deborah Sturdy CBE, chief nurse for adult social care in England. Deborah said: “Social care is a vital part of our public services and it’s really important that we support our veterans to both access those services and support them while they’re living within them. “The launch of the Veteran Friendly Framework is a really important step forward. The partnership and opportunity that it presents to make sure people live well and have a fulfilled and interesting life is absolutely critical. “I’m delighted to be supporting this and I know that this will make a real difference, not only to the veterans who live with us, but also the understanding and the quality of care they receive.”

The VFF is a two-year collaboration between Armed Forces charities Royal Star & Garter, the Royal British Legion and the NHS Veterans Covenant Healthcare Alliance, with funding support from the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust. This project, focusing on care homes, follows on from the Veteran Friendly accredited GP scheme run by the Royal College of General Practitioners and the VCHA NHS accreditation scheme. Care providers will need to meet eight standards to complete their accreditation. These will include provisions to identify the wellbeing needs of veterans and their partners by ensuring that Armed Forces status is included in care planning; addressing social isolation; and providing signposting to local statutory and charitable support services. During an initial pilot phase of the VFF, 10 care homes have met the required standards including all Royal Star & Garter and five Royal British Legion homes (with a sixth and final home about to achieve accreditation). More than 670 veterans and partners are now benefiting from enhancements made resulting from the Framework and more than 1,200 staff have received enhanced training and guidance in better engaging with the unique military experience.

Great night promised at CUK Awards

Baking enthusiasts at an Exeter care home had a ‘scone off’ to celebrate the start of Britain’s favourite baking show. Residents at The Old Rectory made a variety of scones for the care home’s ‘scone off’ competition, inspired by the popular Channel 4 show, the Great British Bake Off. Residents Ada Johnson, Jackie Brooks and Barbara Kelly mixed, shaped and baked their scones, which ranged from blue, raspberry and white chocolate scones to green, cherry scones, and more traditional looking sultana and cinnamon scones. Winner Ada Johnson is pictured with competition judge George Williams, a singer and entertainer who regularly visits the home.

TICKETS are selling fast for the 2023 Caring UK Awards; with shortlisted care homes, sponsors and guests all looking forward to a great evening. Organised by Script Media in partnership with Caring UK and headline sponsor Virgin Money, this annual celebration of success will culminate in a glittering ceremony – taking place at the Athena in Leicester on Thursday December 7. TV personality Des Coleman has replaced Emma Jesson as this year’s presenter. We received a record number of entries from all over the UK with so many stories of the wonderful work that is being done and we want to thank everyone who sent in nominations. Shortlisted entries from far and wide have made the finals, now progressing to the next stage of the judging process. Event organiser Dominic Musgrave added: “The standard of entries has been higher than we could ever have imagined, and we’re really looking forward to seeing everyone on the night. “It was difficult enough for us to narrow the number of entries down into a shortlist so I don’t envy our judges who are going to have to choose the winners. “The event itself will be a celebration of all that is good in the industry and the perfect party to start Christmas.” Tickets to the industry’s party of the year are available at https:// script-events.co.uk/cuk-awardstickets

Mayor opens new seaside oasis at Brentwood home A BRENTWOOD care home welcomed Mayor, Gareth Barrett, as he marked the official opening of the new seaside area with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Old Shenfield Place hosted a celebration party to bring together the community to enjoy a fun-filled event. While a trip to the beach isn’t possible for all, the home has created its very own seaside oasis for residents to enjoy in the comfort of their own home. It was a trip down memory lane for many, as residents reminisced about their most memorable seaside family holidays while they took part in some traditional activities including sandpit, an ice cream van, a bouncy castle and live music. Not only was the event a huge success, but the home also raised £475 for the residents’ fund where they are planning to treat the residents to something extraordinary once they reach £1,000. Cristina Duran, home manager at Old Shenfield Place, said: “The day was a great success. It was fantastic to see our residents reminiscing and enjoying the sensory and traditional pleasures of a visit to the seaside. “We are so excited to be able to open our new seaside area. We are confident it will make a huge difference to our

Our residents love a party, and love engagement from the outside world. “The joy on the residents’ faces was a testament to the success of the

event and I’d like to thank my team for all their dedication to making it such a wonderful day.” The new seaside area has now been fully installed with a sandpit in a seaside and underwater theme. It features a beach bar, deckchairs and straw style umbrellas to decorate the picnic benches.

Inspectorate praises home WASHINGTON Lodge care home in Washington, Tyne and Wear has been rated as ‘Good’ in all areas following its latest Care Quality Commission inspection. The inspection focused on safety and leadership and the ‘Good’ ratings for those areas reflected the overall status of the home. Washington Lodge is a nursing home which provides nursing and personal care for up to 65 people, some of whom are living with dementia. The operation of the home was taken over in October 2022 by Healthcare Management Solutions. Alison Boote, operations director at Healthcare Management Solutions said: “This report is testament to the whole team at Washington Lodge and the enthusiasm with which they have embraced the changes introduced under our management. “Excellent quality of care and support for residents is the main

priority and the report provides independent testament that this is being achieved, with very positive remarks from the inspector, residents and their families.” The inspector noted that ‘people and their relatives were very positive about the care provided. People told us they felt safe and staff had the skills to support them. Relatives provided positive examples of how staff had helped improve people’s lives since moving to the home.’ The report also stated that ‘people were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests; the policies and systems in the service supported this practice.’ It also said that ‘the service was consistently managed and well-led. Leaders and the culture they created promoted high-quality, personcentred care.’

Village garden is transformed by community COMMUNITY spirit has flourished in Atherton as locals lend their green fingers in support of a garden transformation at Belong care village, working alongside its customers to build an ecosystem for everyone to enjoy. Thanks to the help and hard work of customers and volunteers, the grounds have welcomed the addition of a greenhouse, vegetable troughs and raised planters, together creating the perfect home for flowers, whilst attracting birds, insects, and wildlife. The benefits of a new kitchen garden have already been realised with herbs being used in cooking, such as coriander adding a kick to carrot soup. Kim Calland, experience coordinator at Belong Atherton, said: “We have lovely dementia friendly gardens and our customers asked if we could have more vibrancy, more wildlife, and bring more of the outside world in. “They were also keen to lead the project themselves and for it to have an element of sustainability, so we’re growing our own fruit and vegetables for meals, as well as flowers to add a splash of colour inside and out.” Residents have been supported to get involved on the village’s terraces, planting hanging baskets, filling bird feeders and keeping bird baths topped up. The dementia specialist also invited The Wildlife Trust to share their expertise with residents and tenants on how to create a wildlife hub at their home. The project has been made possible thanks to funding from Greater Manchester Integrated Care

Resident Bill Dootson and experience coordinator Kim Calland enjoy the results of their gardening. Partnership, as well as generous donations from residents, apartment tenants and their families. Work commenced earlier this year before gaining momentum when the village welcomed more volunteers to mark The Big Help Out as part of His Majesty The King’s coronation celebrations in May. Kim added: “Our customers have been loving it. Many of them are gardening enthusiasts and have relished being able to teach colleagues about what we need, where best to plant certain species, how to do it. “It’s been a wonderful experience for all – now, we’re hoping for some autumn sunshine, but at least we can appreciate the gardens, whatever the weather.”

Rowans Care Centre in Macclesfield had a morning of fun with two ponies trotting into the home. The ponies received love and enjoyed being petted both in the garden and in residents’ rooms for those who were unable to go outside. Care centre manager Sandra Senior said: “Our goal is to consistently plan delightful activities for our residents, and the ponies visit has proved to be an extraordinary triumph. It was great to see the ponies bring laughter and smiles to our residents’ faces, it shows the profound impact of animals and the benefits and joy they bring to our residents.”

HASSLE - FREE BATHROOM REFURBISHMENTS EA Mobility is a nationwide provider of accessible and adapted bathrooms, operating within the care sector. EA was founded as a result of personal challenges experienced by our Founder and MD, Kevin Carvell. His experiences for over 20 years with his paraplegic father identified an opportunity to change the way that people with, and people caring for those with disabilities go about adapting their home environments to suit their mobility requirements. Typically, adaptations are carried out by general contractors whose expertise aren’t specifically tailored to dealing with those with disabilities. EA has identified a need within the market to approach with care and be able to offer that bit extra to ensure that care goals are met, and clients’ experience is at the heart of everything we do. There are three main offerings that allow us to meet these challenges:

Fast lead times EA work to a 4–6-week lead time from signed order to commence our projects. This is important, particularly in situations where the care needs of the customers are increasing rapidly, and the right home environment needs to be created to suit them.

Expert advice and project ownership We pride ourselves on what we can offer our clients by way of expertise and project ownership. Founded off the back of personal experience, this expertise has been at the heart of what our assessment teams and project managers have at their disposal.

Our journey started as a very regional specialist bathroom adaptation provider, but we soon realised there was a greater need for this all around the UK, so we expanded our borders to enable national coverage during one of the most challenging times in history. Additional works that enable these adaptations are all within our remit. Examples of this would include wall removals, door widening, etc. We are a company with Advanced CHAS Accreditation, which gives peace of mind that all our work is carried to full building standards. We are also proud to work with a number of organisations such as Aspire, APIL, and Child Brain Injury Trust. Living Made Easy / DLF and more.

We specialise in adaptations for the residential care homes sector throughout the United Kingdom. Our adaptations create safer working environments for care staff, support Care Quality Commission compliance and promote cost-efficient care home management. You can find out more by visiting www.eamobility.com or sending an email to enquiries@eamobility.com and requesting an advice pack.

Employed installation workforce EA employs an installation workforce to ensure our installers are trained to a high standard to deliver a first-class quality service to our clients. This is a hugely important aspect of our offering as it ensures we can deliver on our promises and not become reliant on external contractors to complete our projects, cutting out delays, unreliability, and poor quality workmanship. We understand the main complexities of working with those with mobility challenges, therefore, employing our team ensures that we can train, develop, and nurture our team to understand and work within difficult situations.

In his latest in a series of regular columns, care provider Mike Padgham, who is chair of the Independent Care Group, gives us his personal take on the big issues facing social care.

Little sparkle from the political parties

NOVEMBER means bonfire night and fireworks but sadly we are seeing very little sparkle from the main political parties when it comes to the future of social care. At their main showcase events of the year – the party conferences – politicians kept their powder dry when it came to announcements on care. If not spectacular pyrotechnics we were at least hoping for some sparklers and maybe even the odd roman candle. But they were, let’s face it, something of a damp squib. True, the Liberal Democrats pledged £5bn a year extra to support social care, with the money coming from savings to the NHS that better social care would create. And Shadow Health Secretary Wes Streeting promised to ‘grip the immediate crisis in social care’ and deliver a New Deal for Care Workers to address workforce recruitment and retention. The Conservatives stayed largely silent on social care, keeping all their promises targeted on NHS healthcare. What I wanted from them all was a new vision. Something to inspire confidence and convince me that a new dawn for social care was on the horizon. The sector is battered and bruised by the pandemic, staff shortages and the cost-of-living crisis. We are heading into what will probably be another tough winter. We needed something to look forward to and it didn’t come. The question is, why? Are they perhaps keeping big announcements on social care reform under wraps for their manifestos when the starting pistol is fired for a General

Mike Padgham Election? Are they biding their time to see how things change between now and that election – most probably in May next year – before putting their cards on the table? Or do they simply not know what to do? My suspicion is that politicians are wary of making any firm promises on social care because it is viewed as a controversial topic.

All the parties are worried about coming over as big spenders when they want to give the impression of sound economic management. They feel tight fiscal management is called for, so being seen to spend money on social care – particularly when the opposition parties won’t have a real picture of what cash is in the coffers – might be risky. And there will be some political nervousness too about revealing any plan for social care reform. Who can forget Theresa May’s ‘dementia tax’ – a proposal to ask people needing social care to pay for it until the value of their assets – including their home – reached a floor of £100,000. This policy very nearly derailed Mrs May’s General Election campaign in 2017 and the Conservatives were forced to abandon it. Even accepting this reticence, I am nevertheless disappointed that we have as yet no bold, exciting proposals for social care from those who want our vote next year. Politicians seem determined to view social care reform as a danger, a difficult problem to tackle and a potential electoral banana skin. Instead, they should view it as an opportunity -a chance to demonstrate some bold, clear, blue-sky thinking that sets them apart from their opponents. People, including me, are disillusioned with politicians – too many broken promises. They have a tough task in regaining our trust and earning our respect and our votes. So this is no time to hide your light under a bushel. Time to tear up all those old documents, green papers, white papers and reports and throw them on the bonfire. We need something new on social care to get us on our feet and down to the ballot box next year.

Dogs melt hearts as breeds celebrated RESIDENTS of a Dorset care home have declared their first-ever dog agility show a ‘pawsome’ success. Labradors, terriers, huskies and chihuahus were among the breeds in a 10-strong field vying for glory at Colten Care’s Brook View in West Moors. The fun featured an obstacle course in which handlers directed their canine competitors in a race based on time and accuracy. The dogs were brought along by Brook View residents’ families, neighbours and team members at the home. After all the pooches had performed, the overall winner was declared to be pint-size chihuahua Blossom, owned by senior care lead Marivic Schurer. She said: “My husband and I couldn’t believe Blossom had won. She initially took first place for best in style and then she came first in agility overall. It was a complete surprise that she had it in her.” Runner-up was terrier cross Rosie, owned by companionship team member Jo Vardy. In third place was Teddy, a Siberian husky cross German Shepherd owned by kitchen assistant Sue Newman. Among those further down the rankings were black lab Dylan in fourth place, white lab Kimmy in fifth and terrier Pearl in sixth. Companionship team member Rebecca Grimsey said: “All the competitors were rewarded with

Overall winner Blossom the chihuahua with owner Marivic Schurer, senior care lead at Brook View. rosettes and doggy treats and we rounded off the occasion with refreshments including biscuits cut out in paw prints and bone shapes made by our chefs Jack and Isabella. “We then held a grand raffle prize draw with all proceeds going to the charity we support, Waggy Tails Rescue. It was a lovely time had by all.” Among the visitors were Waggy Tails representatives Nicky Chapman, Sue Welsh and Neil Davidson, who brought along Eddie, a black lab, and Teddy, a Shitzu, to take part in the fun.

Home takes a nostalgic trip back to the 1950s RESIDENTS and staff at Keate House in Lymm took a trip down memory lane as they transformed their home into a time capsule of the 1950s. The day was filled with retro delights, from milkshakes and Elvis to classic cars and jukebox tunes. The day began with milkshakes and the excitement continued to build as a surprise guest made his grand entrance – none other than Elvis Presley himself, or at least, an impersonator who had everyone in awe with his rock ‘n’ roll moves. The residents couldn’t resist dancing around the jukebox, just like they used to in their youth. Lunchtime brought another treat as the dining area was transformed into a 1950s-style diner, complete with red-and-white checkered tablecloths. Residents enjoyed classic American fare, indulging in juicy burgers and hot dogs, accompanied by crispy fries. As if the day couldn’t get any better, the American Auto Club North West arrived with stunning vintage cars from the 1950s. The gleaming chrome and sleek lines of these classic cars transported the residents back in time, sparking memories of their own experiences. Care home manager Diane Clarkson said “It’s been so heartwarming to see the smiles on our residents’ faces. “The 1950s was a time of great nostalgia for many of them, and we wanted to create an immersive

Residents enjoy ‘cruise’ experience that would transport them back to those cherished memories. “The presence of Elvis and the classic cars was a real highlight. Our residents will be talking about this day for weeks, and I’m thrilled that we could make it happen.” The day concluded with an evening dance around the jukebox, with residents sipping on cola floats and munching on popcorn. The laughter and joy that filled the air was a testament to the success of this nostalgic journey, as residents and staff alike cherished the opportunity to relive some of their fondest memories.

RESIDENTS at Millway House in Andover have been ‘travelling’ across Europe from the comfort of their living room this month in a weeklong virtual river cruise. Organised by staff at the nurse-led care home, the special week saw residents experience the delights of Germany, Spain, Italy and the UK, as if they were hopping on and off a cruise ship. Claire Lousteau, home manager at Millway House, said the virtual cruise was a wonderful way to give residents an opportunity to see a bit of the world without having to leave the comfort of their home. She added: “Many of our residents have done a lot of travelling in their

lifetimes and will be missing being able to see different places. It’s been brilliant to be able to give them a bit of that experience this week. “It was wonderful to see everyone enjoying themselves and sampling what different countries have to offer, and thanks go to our amazing activities team for organising it.” Games were played, pizzas were made, there was singing with Rachorroti, and even a Spanish quiz, and residents all had the chance to enjoy the ‘local’ cuisine. Finishing their ‘travels’ back in the UK, the week ended with a game of bingo, along with a national anthem to remember the late Majesty the Queen, a year on from her death.

Resident enjoys surprise visit to his golf course

Heather Cowan with actor Ron Emslie at the opening of Daviot Care Home’s Men’s Shed.

Home opens Men’s Shed DAVIOT Care Home, run by Meallmore Ltd, has opened its first Men’s Shed. Thought to be the first of these spaces in a care home in Scotland, a Men’s Shed is a place to practice skills and enjoy making and mending, whilst also facilitating social connections, friendship building, and sharing skills and knowledge. Home manager Heather Cowan said: “Being part of the Men’s Shed movement in Scotland and the welfare of men’s health is something we’re very passionate about at Meallmore. “We’ve created this new space to facilitate connection, conversation and creativity for our male residents. “It encourages people to come together to build, fix and restore, not only physical projects, but themselves included. “It is of huge benefit our male residents and colleagues, and we’re already seeing the benefits of it. “We’re really excited to see what

objects they all make and continuing to see its impact on our little community in Inverness.” At Daviot, the shed offers a safe space for residents to come together to socialise and carry out a range of activities chosen by the shedders for themselves. It will bring lots of benefits to male residents’ health and wellbeing at the care home. The shed provides tools for training and skills development and residents have already begun building garden benches and candle holders. The shed was officially opened by actor Ron Emslie, who starred in the production of “Man Shed”, which was performed during the Edinburgh International Fringe Festival. For the official opening, the care home hosted a party, where colleagues and residents were joined by friends, family and loved ones to celebrate with some delicious homemade canapes and fizz. Daviot is registered with the UK Men’s Shed Association.

A CARE home resident has been granted a ‘magic moment’ and enjoyed a surprise visit to his golf course after 20 years. Patrick Segrove, a resident of Austenwood in Gerrards Cross, was treated to a surprise as part of the home’s Magic Moment scheme. Patrick was overjoyed when he arrived at his golf club that he was a member of for 72 years. Home manager Ana Ciobotaru said: “It’s always a pleasure to go the extra mile for our residents, especially those who have been through a lot and are missing their old friends. “It’s part of what our lifestyle team is focussed on, enriching our residents’ lives with events and activities that they love. “We’re honoured to have been able to bring a smile to Patrick’s face and hope he can continue to make many more happy memories with us here.” The 86-year-old moved into the care home in 2021 after a short spell in hospital to get his care needs assessed. He settled in the home straight away and so his family decided that Austenwood, which provides nursing care, is where he should permanently live. Patrick loves spending time outdoors in the garden and that is often where he would speak about his time as a golfer.

So knowing his love for golf, lifestyle coordinator Shannon McLeod decided to take him back to the golf course that he joined when he was just 14. Shannon and an old friend who often visits Patrick at the home made arrangements and worked with the golf course to make the surprise happen. Patrick enjoyed a ride in a golf cart and was treated to lunch by his friend Pauline. The surprise continued when he was later joined by all his old golfing friends.

Experience day enhances residents’ sense of worth Charity to benefit from STAFF at a dementia care home in Somerset have been receiving help in doing their jobs from the residents they support – all as part of a recent initiative aimed at boosting the sense of usefulness of those being cared for. The upside-down work experience programme sparked memories and conversation among the residents of Camelot House and Lodge in Wellington about the jobs they used to do, both paid and unpaid. They were offered a range of simple tasks to volunteer for, including folding laundry, doing woodwork, food preparation, working in the office and serving in the bar. A job ad posted by staff in the home’s Windsor Arms bar was eagerly responded to by Mavis Treece and Ken Hinks, resulting in Mavis serving other residents and wiping down the bar, and Ken helping to close up and mopping the floor. Activities co-ordinator Richard Dempslake said: “Both of them really enjoyed their jobs – and the drinks they had afterwards. And Ken said he liked getting his hands dirty. “The aim of the initiative was to give

association’s donation

our residents something to do that would bring a real sense of purpose with it. “That’s so important for people living with dementia – and it’s our job to come up with activities like this to maintain and enhance their sense of self-worth. “Most of them regularly tell us they are of a generation when they “didn’t mind a bit of hard work” and liked to do their part.”

THE Lincolnshire Care Association has raised £1,500 through charity raffles held at the last three Lincolnshire Care Awards ceremonies and is donating the money to The Care Workers’ Charity. The Care Workers’ Charity was founded in 2009 to support current and former care workers with one-off crisis grants. Since 2020 it has paid out more than £5.6million in grants to 10,350 care workers in need. The charity supports around two million care workers in the UK who care for some of the most vulnerable people in our society with little recognition and often no reward. Chair of LinCA, Melanie Weatherley MBE, said: “Many care workers are under great financial pressures with soaring food, energy, and housing costs, and this is negatively impacting on both their physical and mental health. “We want to ensure care workers get the support they need to make ends

meet this winter.” Karolina Gerlich, CEO of The Care Workers’ Charity, added: “We are delighted to have had LinCA supporting our work; care associations have a very meaningful role with care providers in their local areas, and LinCA’s support enables us to connect with those care providers and care workers. “The money raised by LinCA will make a huge difference to the lives of care workers in the UK and will help to provide crisis grants for care workers in need. “The CWC is a safety net for care workers and their families who are struggling and might not have the means to support themselves. “A grant of £500 for a family means they can continue to heat their house over winter or repair their car to ensure they can get to work. “Our support eases the stress for care workers and helps them to keep caring.”

Pair show love has no age limit as they mark wedding anniversary TWO residents at RMBI Care Co. Home Connaught Court in Fulford, York, recently celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary. Brian, 93, and Marie Thackray, 100, received a bouquet of flowers and well wishes from fellow residents, staff members and loved ones. They enjoyed a celebration at the home with a bottle of sherry. When asked about their love story, they both clearly remember how it all began. Marie was originally from Cornwall, while Brian was from Malton, North Yorkshire. They met back in May 1995 at Kenilworth Castle in Warwickshire when they were both on holiday. They were both widowed and hit it off from the beginning, and Brian gave Marie his phone number, in case she wanted to send him a Christmas card. The following week Brian, still very taken with Marie, went down to St Austell, Cornwall to visit her and on the seventh day they had known each other, he asked Marie to marry him. Remembering the proposal, Brian

asked Marie: “Will you marry me? I don’t know where, and I don’t know when.” Marie replied with: “Why not?” They got married just five months later, first in St Austell Registry Office on September 5, 1995 followed by a blessing in Old Malton. Marie was 72 and Brian was 64. Brian said: “We have had a wonderful life together. Age doesn’t stop you falling in love. We get on so well and avoid controversial subjects.” Marie added: “We never have a cross word, we are easy going, good company to each other and have plenty in common. It’s lovely to look after each other, and be together.” Fran Tagg, one of the activities coordinators at Connaught Court, said: “Brian and Marie are a lovely committed couple, it is obvious how much they love each other. “They are a great example of a happy marriage, and it just shows it’s never too late to meet your soulmate. We are thrilled to share their anniversary with them both.”

The team at Hatherleigh Nursing Home have created a new cinema room for residents to enjoy. It has been decorated in a ‘picture house’ style that is reminiscent of early cinemas that residents may have attended in their youth. There is a large screen set up on the wall and comfortable seating where films can be enjoyed with a box of popcorn and a soft drink. It also doubles up as a ‘mood room’ with different light settings, glittery walls, glow in the dark stars on the ceiling and a glowing faux fireplace. It has been designed to create a warm, secluded and comforting environment for someone to relax and spend some time watching the fire or having a snooze under the stars.

A FAMILY-run care home group is celebrating the success of its overseas training initiative which has now seen more than 50 nurses integrate within its communities — ensuring a vein of quality runs throughout its offering. Driven by a pressing shortage of nurses in the UK social care sector, Nellsar Care Homes set out to create an innovative overseas nursing training programme in Kerala, India — looking to enhance the quality of care provided in its 13 homes across Kent, Surrey and Essex. The programme facilitates the seamless integration of overseas caregivers into the UK by providing them with the opportunity to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council to earn the right to work in the country. In order to obtain the theoretical knowledge and practical clinical skills required for the NMC registration, following the successful completion of two exams in India, nurses then travel to the UK to undertake Objective Structured Clinical Exam training — with Nellsar’s staff working closely with the students to guide them through a comprehensive curriculum. To uphold the highest standards of care, Nellsar prioritises the wellbeing of its overseas staff, offering comprehensive support such as housing, training, guidance and transportation to ensure a nurturing and inclusive environment for nurses throughout their journey. Each student is also assigned a tutor from the care home group, who are also offered a ‘Train the Trainer’ course from Oxford Brookes University. Glenda Osmotherly, director of operations at Nellsar, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the success of our overseas initiative since it was set up three years ago. “These talented individuals are the

backbone of the outstanding care we deliver and to surpass this milestone is a huge achievement for Nellsar and the nurses that have completed the training. “10 of the 55 nurses to pass the course have actually risen through the ranks to senior positions, which we are all immensely proud of.” The 100 per cent pass rate achieved by the cohort of nurses from the training centre reflects the effectiveness and quality of the programme, further highlighting Nellsar’s commitment to nurturing talent and promoting diversity in the healthcare workforce. Glenda added: “One of the key driving forces behind this initiative was to reduce our reliance on expensive agency staff. The programme has been successful in achieving this, leading to a substantial cost reduction that has allowed us to reinvest in other important areas of our homes. “We are all immensely proud of what we have achieved and we can’t wait to welcome more talented nurses into our care community.”

Resident gets a kick out of visit JOHN Burns enjoyed a special day as he welcomed his favourite football team Loganlea United AFC to Heatherfield Care Home in Armadale, where he lives. A club legend and lifelong fan, John recently donated an impressive sum of money to support the local team, nicknamed the Dykes. In return, the team’s captain (Billy Pearson), vice-captain (Gary White) and manager (Nicky Frew) made a surprise visit to the home and gifted John a signed football top, medals from last season’s league win and a team photograph. He said: “I was overwhelmed when the boys walked through the door. I’ve always loved football, and to feel as though a small part of the game loves me back is special. I couldn’t have asked for a better day.” The group enjoyed a morning discussing historic matches and recent wins, with former football coach John wasting no time before sharing his own advice.

Organisations call on government to overhaul end-of-life care

Two residents at RMBI Care Co. Home Prince George Duke of Kent Court, in Chislehurst, have teamed up to knit small hats for babies receiving support in the Neonatal Unit at Darent Valley Hospital, in Dartford. Annie Hamlin, 98, and Jean Sweett, 96, along with her daughter Pam, have been putting their love for knitting to provide warmth for babies who have been born prematurely and need to spend time in the Special Care Baby Unit. Jean, along with Diane Connor, the home’s activities coordinator, were delighted to visit the Neonatal Unit in the hospital to hand deliver the knitted hats. “Knitting is one of my favourite pastimes. It is very good for my arthritis and keeps my hands moving for a few hours of the day, every day,” said Annie. “I am very proud to be part of such a worthwhile project, supporting premature babies and their families during their time in hospital.”

A COALITION of leading health and social care organisations is calling on the government to tackle failings in the way older people are cared for in their final years of life. The new Coalition of Frontline Care for People Nearing the End of Life, which includes Care England, the British Geriatrics Society and The Gold Standards Framework Centre, is calling for enhanced core training in end-of-life care for the UK’s three million generalist frontline health and social care workers. They also want to see a step-change in health and care integration from the new Integrated Care Boards and heightened recognition of end-of-life care by the CQC. In an open letter to Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Rt Hon Steve Barclay MP, and Social Care Minister, Helen Whately MP, they say that existing NHS resources could be better used to transform a vital system of care that is failing those most in need. Professor Keri Thomas OBE, founder and chair of GSF, the leading training provider in end-of-life care for frontline health and care staff, said: “Everyone deserves gold standard care at the end of their life. Most hands-on care for people in their final year of life is given by the frontline generalist workforce, in both health and social care. “Therefore, it makes sense to ensure

Professor Keri Thomas OBE that those giving most care to most people in their final years, in any setting, are well trained in end of life care. “The current system, however, is particularly failing vulnerable older people in their final years and the situation will only worsen as the population ages. Patterns of dying are changing too. “Healthcare systems must adapt to the age-related conditions causing deaths and long-term illnesses, such as the UK’s biggest killer – dementia, by equipping frontline teams to

provide proactive, personalised, coordinated and system-focused care for people in their final years. “Research shows that given the choice, most people would prefer to die at home or in a care home yet almost half die in hospital. “Unless more frontline health and care professionals receive specific end of life training and support, we will see further increases in emergency admissions and hospital deaths, which is not what we or the public want.” The open letter has been signed by the leaders of seven health and care organisations which represent the health and social care workforce providing frontline care to those in the last years of life. These include: the Gold Standards Framework Centre, Care England, the British Geriatrics Society, the National Care Forum, the Homecare Association, the Association of Retirement Communities Operators and the Community Hospitals Association. Highlighting the fact that about a third of the NHS budget is currently spent caring for people in the last year of their lives, the coalition say minimal investment would reap considerable rewards and cost-savings, reducing avoidable hospitalisation, cutting waiting times and fulfilling people’s preference to die at home.

Honouring training excellence in the care sector: an award of quality and distinction ORGANISATIONS are increasingly looking for ways to demonstrate their dedication to learning and development and achieving an award is a great way to do this. The Princess Royal Training Awards are a great option. They are the pinnacle of achievement in L&D and royally recognise employers committed to training who can show exceptional impact on their organisation. 2023 has been a remarkable year for the Awards, with the highest number of applications and recipients since the Awards were established in 2016. Not only does this highlight increasing dedication to L&D, but also growing awareness of the gold stamp of approval that these Awards provide. What do the Princess Royal Training Awards offer? Open to all private, public or not-forprofit organisations operating in the UK and Ireland regardless of size or sector, the Awards are free from start to finish. Distinctively, organisations do not compete with one another, they simply need to meet the Awards’ criteria through their training programmes. Applicants receive unrivalled support through one-to-one calls, virtual and in-person workshops and

‘tea and chat’ sessions and there is even an opportunity to submit a draft application to get feedback from assessors. Successful applicants are celebrated at a high-profile ceremony, join an active Alumni network of 600-plus members dedicated to investing in L&D and benefit significantly from the ongoing recognition and symbol of distinction afforded by these Awards. Previous recipients have also reported improved recruitment and retention, increased investment in training and incorporation of L&D into organisational strategy.

Have organisations in the care sector been recognised? Over the years, organisations large and small from the care sector have applied for and achieved these prestigious Awards. This year saw leading independent physiotherapy provider Ascenti achieve an Award for a programme designed to upskill and retain existing employees and attract new physiotherapists in a tight labour market. The result has been an increase in employee headcount from 197 in 2020 to 253 in 2023 and a rise in patient satisfaction to 95 per cent.

Family-run provider of residential care, Hallmark Care Homes, received an Award for a programme aimed at tackling challenges after Brexit and the Covid-19 pandemic. Outcomes have included improved staff retention, recruitment savings of over £76,000, reduced need to recruit overseas workers, greater staff empowerment and enhanced morale and communication. Also in 2023, the homecare franchise Right at Home UK achieved an Award for its caregivers’ training programme which has led to participants achieving a nationally recognised qualification, savings on external training costs, and 92 per cent of clients reporting confidence in caregivers’ understanding of their needs. How do I apply for the Awards? If your organisation is dedicated to L&D and is looking to be recognised for a training programme which has positively impacted your organisation, why not register your interest now? When applications open on December 4 you’ll be sent a unique link to the application form. n You can find out more at https://www. princessroyaltrainingawards.com/aboutthe-awards/?utm_source=caringuk&utm_ medium=editorial&utm_ campaign=prta24&utm_content=nov-23

Having owned Sundial for almost twenty two years, it was a hard and emotional decision to sell the business. I have valued your opinion over the years, which helped me generically to stay in touch with the social care market and trends. We never imagined we would be so overwhelmed with potential buyers all in the first week! You found us a suitable buyer whom we were happy to proceed with and although we could never imagine the process would be so frought with challenges, it became evident the power of your network and ability to make the right interventions at the right time. Your years of experience supported the sales process to a positive conclusion. We are now finding our feet in retirement and remain thankful to you both for the unbelievable quality of potential buyers in such a short timeframe and a successful outcome. New home care service opens in Aberdeen

Group expands into North London with £36m development BIRCHGROVE has further strengthened its London footprint with the acquisition of its ninth development - a 60 apartment community in Mill Hill, North London built on the site of a historic former medical research institute. Ayrton House will offer 60 purpose built, self-contained, one, two and three-bed apartments – many with sweeping views over Totteridge Common – exclusively to independently minded people in later life, with communal features including a restaurant, club room, licensed bar and wellness suite, as well as landscaped gardens. The building is the centrepiece of “Ridgeway Views” residential scheme, a 47-acre, 528 home project in Mill Hill’s conservation area. For more than 80 years the historic art deco National Institute for Medical Research, designed by the original Wembley Stadium architect Max Ayrton, was located on the site; the new development pays testament to Max’s original design both in name and by reproducing the original building’s iconic green copper roof. The 60 units will be delivered in turnkey condition in 2024 and have been funded by £10.2m of equity funding from Bridges Fund Management and a development facility from Octopus Real Estate. Honor Barratt, chief executive of Birchgrove, said: “Ever since

Birchgrove’s mid-market rental concept was launched in 2017 the model has gone from strength to strength, enabling over 65s to live flexibly without the burden of home ownership. “The acquisition of our ninth site in just six years, including three major developments across London, is testament to how transformative our model has been to later living; now, we look forward to extending our portfolio even further across London, the Home Counties and beyond.” The £36m acquisition of Ayrton House is Birchgrove’s third development in the capital and comes just weeks after the completion on a 78 apartment development in Hampton Court, with a 50 apartment site in Chiswick having been acquired in 2022. The acquisition also comes as two of Birchgrove’s communities reached full occupancy this month, with Birchgrove’s Queensgate Apartments in Sidcup now at more than 98 per cent occupancy and the Birchgrove’s Woodbank Apartments in Woking at more than 96 per cent occupancy. Birchgrove currently operates three retirement communities across the South-East, with three further communities under construction and now available for rental off-plan, and three further London sites acquired (Chiswick, Hampton Court and Mill Hill).

A NEW home care service will open in Aberdeen, promising 15 new jobs this year, and giving people across the local community more choice and control over their care. The new Bluebird Care Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire service recently launched, serving the city and surrounding areas with companionship care. Over the coming weeks they will expand their offer to include a wide range of care services including personal care and live-in care. The service is spearheaded by Minesh Chopra, owner and director, and registered manager Alicia Laurie. He said: “It’s never been more important for older people in the community and their families to be given a wide range of options for their essential care. “High-quality and consistent care at home can be life changing, and through our service we will be able to help more people gain access to that care.” Alicia is the first member of the Bluebird Care Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire team, and will oversee

Alicia Laurie the recruitment of up to 15 members of the team over the coming weeks as the service grows. An Aberdeen local, Alicia has dedicated her career to caring for others and has years of experience across the sector. She said: “I am delighted that we are able to offer a new home care service in my hometown Aberdeen and across the shire. Aberdeen has so much to offer, and we should use local resources and programmes as much as we can, to support each other. “That’s why I’m so excited to join Bluebird Care as they embark on a new adventure across Aberdeen and the Shire. “We are all different, and so our care should be too – we aren’t a onesize-fits-all service, we will really get to know every customer and their individual circumstances as well as their family to provide personalised care that’s right for them.”

apetito cooks up winter warmers with its new range CARE homes can enjoy fresh innovation from leading meals provider, apetito, which has launched nine brand-new dishes that residents will love - in a range of formats to suit every need. Central to the launch, apetito has made additions to its allergen freefrom range which are available in individual portion sizing. Richard Woodward, general manager of apetito’s care home team, said: “We’re delighted to be introducing all these new dishes to our range and think these new winter meals are nutritious, warm, and comforting options for care homes to serve their residents during the colder months. “Not only are these meals tasty and delicious, but they are also made with high-quality ingredients and cater to a wide range of dietary requirements.” Within the free-from range, apetito’s cottage pie is the company’s first beef

meal to be energy dense, providing 23 grams of protein and 506 calories. And butterbean and cauliflower curry is apetito’s very first plantbased (vegan) energy dense option in our allergen free range. Another first in apetito’s allergenfree range is tomato soup, which is finished with basil and meets the BDA criteria for a nourishing and energy dense soup. It is delicious and creamy, packed with nutrients garnered from the

tomatoes, cauliflower, and haricot beans. And with more residents opting for a vegetarian or plant-based diet, apetito is introducing more vegetarian and vegan options to help care homes offer more choice at mealtimes: apetito’s new vegan root vegetable pie is a perfect winter warmer. It’s packed full of seven different vegetables, with notes of sage, apple, and cranberries, as well as being energy dense with 13g of plant protein per portion. The new leeks in cheese sauce dish is the perfect addition for a roast dinner – or can be enjoyed on its own. Made using British cream and cheese, it packs 4.6g of protein into every serving. apetito’s new root vegetable medley includes carrots, sweet potato, swede, and red onion, which have been tumbled with olive oil, thyme, and agave syrup to give a hint of sweetness.

The dish is vegan, gluten-free, low in fat and low in salt, providing a great healthy option for residents. apetito is also launching a new individual apple crumble, made with stewed sweet Bramley apples, topped with a vegan and gluten-free crumble. It’s also energy dense and low in salt, so it’s the perfect dessert option for multiple dietary requirements. New to its traditional range is apetito’s salmon tagine, which has whole pieces of salmon in an aromatic tagine sauce with diced apricots and chickpeas. The dish is both energy dense and gluten free. It’s a great oily fish option and is available in both multi-portion and twin portion sizes. For residents with a sweet tooth, apetito’s pastry chefs have developed a new gluten-free lemon and orange pudding. It’s the perfect gluten-free alternative to the company’s popular lemon sponge.

AAT launches new, safer option for fall recovery HELPING people after they have fallen is being given a new, safer solution for everyone involved. AAT is bringing to market the Indeelift, a mobile platform “people picker upper”. The rechargeable battery-powered lift eliminates all the problems trying to get a conventional hoist with sling or cushion system into place. Based around a steel platform, the Indeelift is simply slid into position for it to lift, gently and smoothly, the fallen person from floor to standing. The lift’s design coupled with integrated rise assist handles and safety belts optimise stability during the process. A range of versions enable even morbidly obese (up to 250kg/39st) to be lifted to their feet safely and with dignity. Self-assist and supported options are available. “Each care home experiences an average of at least three falls/month,” said Peter Wingrave, AAT director. “According to Age UK, 250,000 people are hospitalised each year after a fall at home. “The Care Inspectorate advises as good practice the use of lifting equipment to optimise safety when people have fallen, in appropriate circumstances. “Indeelift brings a new, dignified approach to that safe transfer. It is probably the least invasive recovery solution, and offers the least possible risk, for the fallen person – and carer.” Indeelift is the latest addition to AAT’s range of innovative and often unique handling and transfer equipment.

Its brand-leading S-Max stairclimber is widely used across care environments to overcome the short or long-term barriers of steps and stairs when there is no available lift. The stairclimber is complimented by a raft of associated support solutions, for sitting, lying, sleeping and bathing. Enquiries: Full details can be found on at https://www.aatgb.com/indeelift/ The link also enables quick and easy booking of a free, no obligation assessment. As part of its offering, AAT also provides full training, and onward technical and maintenance support.

A group of kind-hearted mums have brought joy to residents at RMBI Care Co. home Prince George Duke of Kent Court in Chislehurst by bringing their babies and toddlers to visit. The partnership started a few months ago between the group of mums and the residents at the home. Activities coordinator Diane Connor said: “Our residents can’t wait for the babies and toddlers to visit so they can have a cuddle and spend time chatting to the mums. The benefits of holding a baby for some of our ladies is hard to describe; they have a such a soothing and calming effect, and it also brings back memories of motherhood. It’s proved to be especially therapeutic for our residents living with dementia.” Resident Jean Mountford meets and hold baby Polly.
