Comic book artist passes on his skills

A SLOUGH care home resident who created comics for 35 years has been sharing his talents with the next generation.

77-year-old Martin Newman, who lives at Care UK’s Oak House, was joined by pupils from St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School for a comic drawing class.

He started drawing in his younger years and has always enjoyed being creative.

Martin got his first job in 1966 as a creative director/consultant.

He then went on to become a consultant for Horizon art gallery in Henley-on-Thames.

Martin illustrated comics for 35 years, including drawing for the advertising company.

And when the home heard of his ambition to share his skills with the younger generation, they were inspired to organise a comic drawing workshop with local school pupils.

On the day, students from St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School enjoyed a creative session with Martin and team members from Oak House.

They each came up with their own story line and were then coached by Martin on how to create characters and bring the story to life.

Home manager Agnieszka Klimkowicz-Buda said: “We

thoroughly enjoyed welcoming pupils from St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School into the home for a comic book drawing class.

“We are always looking at ways to help residents share their skills and knowledge with younger people.

“Martin is incredibly talented and wanted to inspire the next generation of comic book artists, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to support him to do so.

“Intergenerational activities have also shown to be incredibly fulfilling, as they give younger and older generations a chance to learn from one another.

“These connections can be especially helpful for older people as they can provide a sense of purpose and spark discussions about their childhood.

“It was a brilliant day, both for Martin and the pupils, who all learnt a thing or two from each other.

“We certainly have some budding comic book artists in Slough, and we look forward to seeing them published in the future.

“We’d like to thank Martin for sharing his talents with St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School and we look forward to welcoming the students back in the autumn term.”

Coronation Street star Antony Cotton MBE earned a cash boost for Broughton House Veteran Care Village in Salford when he took part in a celebrity version of the TV quiz show Tipping Point. Antony, who plays barman and factory worker Sean Tully in the ITV soap opera and is an official ambassador of Broughton House, battled it out with chat show host Jonathan Ross and TV presenter and charity campaigner Katie Piper on ITV1’s Tipping Point Lucky Stars in a bid to raise money for their chosen good causes. After answering questions from host Ben Shephard on topics including politics, music, books and sport, Antony walked away with £2,400 for Broughton House.

Nominations deadline extended

EXCITEMENT is building for the industry’s biggest end-of-year party, with plans in place to make this year’s Caring UK Awards the best one yet. The deadline for entries has been extended due to high demand and will now close on Monday, September 11. The awards evening will celebrate excellence throughout the industry, with trophies in 20 categories up for grabs at the glittering ceremony taking place on the night of December 7.

Organised by Script Media in partnership with Caring UK and headline sponsor Virgin Money, this celebration of success will culminate in a glittering ceremony – taking place at the Athena in Leicester – where host Emma Jesson will reveal the winners.

Awards include Regional Care Home of the Year, Care Employee of the Year and Activities Team of the Year. Other categories include Best Innovation in Care, Best Outdoor Environment and Care Employer of the Year.

Previous winners have reported an increase in profile and positive media coverage.

Event director Dominic Musgrave said: “Once again we were overwhelmed with the standard of entries we have received so far from homes up and down the country.

“If you’ve not entered your care business yet then I would urge you to do so sooner rather than later.”

Young carers to benefit as walkers smash challenge

AROUND 30 kind-hearted walkers living at a New Forest care home have proved it’s never too late to get active and raise money for a worthy cause.

Residents of Colten Care’s Woodpeckers in Brockenhurst have spoken of their joy and sense of achievement in smashing a distance target and raising more than £1,100 for the Honeypot young carers’ charity.

Walking or using wheelchairs, the fundraisers originally set a target of 26.2 miles – the length of a marathon – by completing as many laps of their garden as they could using three routes graded for accessibility and number of steps. But over three weeks, they surpassed this several times.

Companionship team member Jo Anderson said: “We ended up completing 279,084 steps which equates to 139.5 miles so collectively we walked 5.3 marathons.”

The residents, supported by team members, families and friends from the New Forest Walk to Work group, filled out ‘fitness passports’ to log their steps. They were also invited to join exercise classes in the garden to help keep up the momentum.

Jo added: “This challenge was bought

about by our residents’ desire to be more active. We already run two to three exercise classes a week and still they want more.

“As we all know, exercise is beneficial for people of all ages as it helps to maintain and improve physical functions such as balance, flexibility and strength.

“This can make it easier to perform everyday tasks and help to reduce the risk of falls and injuries. It promotes mental health and can improve mood, reduce stress and anxiety, and boost self-esteem and confidence.

“It is never too late to start exercising as our wonderful residents have proved by taking up and completing this challenge.

“We presented everyone who took part with a rosette for their amazing contributions.”

Honeypot has been working since 1996 to enhance the lives of young carers aged five to 12 by providing respite breaks and outreach support.

The aim is to provide a safe, nurturing environment for young carers faced with demanding and stressful care responsibilities in their home lives.

Staff celebrate more than 100 years’ service

STAFF at a care home in Oldbury have been commended for their long service – totalling 108 years.

Swimming joy for Isobel

A

WOMAN living with dementia

has rekindled her love of swimming thanks to staff at her Surbiton care home and at a local leisure centre.

Isobel Porter is supported by staff at Royal Star & Garter to visit the Malden Centre, where she enjoys swimming and exercising in the leisure complex’s main pool.

The 81-year-old was joined in the water by husband Jeremy, Royal Star & Garter physiotherapist Annette Millard and wellbeing coordinator Lesley O’Driscoll for her first session in May. A carer also watched on from the poolside.

Lesley said: “Once we knew about Isobel’s love of the water I spoke to our physiotherapist Annette and we thought it would be great if we could get her back in a pool.”

They searched for a suitable venue nearby, complete with a poolside hoist, and found the Malden Centre.

They contacted the leisure complex and carried out a thorough risk assessment. Staff at the Malden Centre helped arrange the visit and suggested the best time for Isobel to take the plunge.

Since her first visit to the pool with Royal Star & Garter, Isobel has returned several times with staff, gaining confidence and stamina in the water, swimming short distances and doing aqua aerobic exercises.

Lesley added: “Isobel loves the sessions. Each week she does more and more in the pool. When she comes back to Royal Star & Garter she tells everyone it was amazing and asks if she can go again.”

Among those celebrating at Newbury Manor are Julie Whorton and Kelly Elwell.

As the longest-standing member, Julie, the home’s housekeeper, joined in 1998.

She has been ensuring the home remains spic and span for the past 25 years – maintaining a clean and comfortable environment for its residents.

Meanwhile, senior care assistant Kelly has been a pillar of support for residents and their families for the last 23 years.

Also commended for their dedication to caring for residents and their families at Newbury Manor are Sue Kaur, who is responsible for the laundry department and joined the team in 2002, senior care assistant Janet Graham, who began her career at the home in 2003, and senior care assistant Claire Nash, who came on board in 2004.

Newbury Manor owner Shindar Chall said: “We are immensely proud of these five outstanding individuals who have collectively dedicated more than 100 years of their lives to Newbury Manor.

“Their unwavering loyalty, compassion and expertise are a true testament to the extraordinary atmosphere created by our wonderful staff and residents.

“Together they have helped shape our care home into the warm and

nurturing community it is today.

“These dedicated individuals have become an integral part of our care home family, going above and beyond to enrich the lives of our residents each and every day.

“Their remarkable commitment and genuine care embody the spirit of Newbury Manor, and we are truly grateful for their invaluable contributions.”

Newbury Manor held a special recognition event, where these staff members were honoured for their long-standing service and exceptional contributions.

Resident George publishes book

SPRINGBANK Care Home resident George Purvis has raised £2,500 for the British Dyslexia Association through the sale of his book “A salmon or two”.

The book, self-published by George last September, tells the story of George and his life as a salmon fisherman on the River Tweed from the 1950s to the 1980s.

Lisa Noble, home manager at Springbank said: “We are so proud of George for his achievement in raising £2,500 for the British Dyslexia Association.

“His story is an inspiration to others

with dyslexia, and we are delighted that he has been able to use his experience to help others.

“We’re happy that we were able to assist George in the sale of his book, both at Springbank, and in the local community, including at our stall at the Addingham coronation celebrations. Springbank continues to support George in breaking down the barriers surrounding dyslexia.”

George and his family recently met with a representative from the British Dyslexia Association to discuss the achievement, and to hand over the cheque.

Will any of the parties discuss social care?

IT’S ALMOST party time.

No, sadly, not that sort of party, but the political party conference season – the time of year when the main contenders for power hold their annual get-togethers.

As they head off to Manchester, Liverpool and Bournemouth the Conservatives, Labour and the Liberal Democrats will all have big issues to debate.

But my question is: will any of them discuss social care?

We know that they should, because the care of our oldest and most vulnerable remains in a perilous state with little sign of improvement on the horizon.

The conference season is a time for the main political parties to set out their stall, tell the public that they are the party to trust.

And their meetings this autumn may have even greater significance than most.

They might, just might, be the last conferences before a General Election, though I am regularly reminded that the Government could wait until January 28, 2025, the latest possible date for a poll.

If the next election is in 2024 though, we need to ensure that social care is in the political parties’ manifestos. And a good way to ensure that is to persuade our politicians that the issue is on the agenda at their party conferences.

I’m not well informed enough to know whether the parties debated the crisis facing care of the vulnerable at their conferences in recent years. But if they have, precious little has emerged on the topic and it certainly didn’t make the conference headlines.

As chair of the Independent Care Group, I have sent our document, the Five Pillars of Social Care Reform, to the health teams of all three main parties, to try to shape their thinking on care.

Whenever conference season comes around, I am reminded of the speech Tony Blair gave at Brighton in September 1997 – his first after

winning the General Election of that year.

In it he famously said he didn’t want his children to grow up in a country where “the only way pensioners can get long-term care is by selling their home, where people who fought to keep that country free are now faced every winter with the struggle for survival…”

Doesn’t it shame us that here we are, 26 years later, living in a country where older people still do have to sell their home to pay for care. Mr Blair also said he wanted Britain to be the best place to grow old. Sadly, hand on heart, we can’t honestly say that it is, can we.

There is a huge opportunity for one of the main political parties to seize

the initiative on social care. To step up and say we are going to solve the crisis in social care and this is how we are going to do it.

Politicians, I fear, do not see social care as a vote winner, as a popular policy to bring out on the hustings, on the campaign trail and on the doorsteps when canvassing votes. But they are wrong.

A new vision for social care would show a brave political party willing to tackle an issue that administration after administration – of all political colour – have shied away from for generations.

So, politicians, let’s hear your plans for social care during the coming months. That would be a party season we would all celebrate.

Chef celebrates 25year anniversary

A SOUTHAMPTON chef manager has celebrated 25 years working at a care home at a party with colleagues, friends and residents.

Verity Sims began working at Anchor’s Dawson Lodge in 1998 and hasn’t looked back since.

During her time at the home she has seen some remarkable events, like the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002 where the home took part in a street party and Verity made a big cake that the whole community enjoyed.

Verity said: “Working for Anchor over the years has been amazing, I have met people from all walks of life and heard their amazing stories. Two days are never the same and although there have been challenges along the way, I’ve loved every minute.

“I’ve witnessed a lot of changes in the last 25 years. Technology has become a huge part of our lives and so much has developed in the care sector too.

“One thing that’s never changed is I’ve always enjoyed chatting with everyone over tea and cakes and felt like I’m part of one big family here.”

In 2021 Verity also won Anchor’s chef of the year competition, beating out chefs from all of the group’s other care homes across the country with a number of dishes that wowed the judges.

In honour of Verity’s milestone, her colleagues and the residents held a

small party in her honour and gave her some flowers and a bottle of Champagne.

Home manager Mitchelle Perry added: “Verity is a fantastic part of the team and a much beloved figure. It’s incredible to think she’s been working here for 25 years. I’m delighted for her, and I think everyone here is too.

“It’s thanks to Verity that residents enjoy delicious and nutritious highquality meals but, more than that, she’s always made sure to put our residents at the centre of everything she does.

“She’s been an absolute inspiration to me and all her colleagues.”

RESIDENTS from a dedicated dementia care home had a taste of luxury when they enjoyed afternoon tea in the grounds of a country estate complete with a choir performance just for them.

A party of eight ladies from Colten Care’s Linden House in Lymington wore summer dresses and straw sun hats for the trip to historic Beaulieu in the New Forest.

Over blueberry pie and fruit salad, they listened to the 16-strong Diamond Divas sing a selection of light music and songs from the shows interspersed with Beatles and Abba favourites.

The visit took place close to an estate cottage and was arranged through personal contacts of Natasha Nilsen, a member of Linden House’s companionship team.

Chris Dimmick, companionship team leader at Linden House, said: “The residents had a lovely time. They really enjoyed it.”

In return for their exclusive performance, the Divas collected a donation of £70 towards their charity Macmillan Caring Locally.

The money added to a grand total of more than £55,000 raised for Macmillan through choir shows over the past 12 years.

Beachy life for care home’s residents

A GROUP of 10 residents from Eston’s Astune Rise care home enjoyed a day at Saltburn-on-Sea, complete with beach huts, fish and chips and a stroll along the pier.

The residents were joined by family members as they enjoyed a classically British day out, organised by the care home’s manager Caroline Bowstead.

She booked a number of Saltburn’s famously colourful beach huts, giving the group a sea view as they tucked into their fish and chips lunch.

After allowing their food to digest, they enjoyed a stroll along the pier with an ice cream, stopping to talk to fishermen and watching the surfers.

Caroline said: “It was an amazing

day out for our residents who all thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

“Everyone was singing ’I do like to be beside the seaside’ on the minibus there and the beach hut company even put out extra deck chairs for us.

“I found out a resident who is Teesside born and bred had never been to Saltburn. She was amazed at how lovely it was, though we were very lucky with the weather too.

“Some of them hadn’t seen surfers in real life before and found it really interesting. Looks like we may have to find a way to get them onto a board.”

The day out is part of the home’s commitment to providing a diverse range of activities for residents.

Suitable for persons living in care institutions, receiving care at home or living independently at home, CareZips® Classic enable people to dress themselves or with assistance from carers.

CARINGNEWS 8 Advertiser’s announcement

How can I find an actual vacancy in a care home? A true story

IN 2013 my wife Janet, aged only 54 suffered a life changing brain injury. I was distraught and heartbroken. For the rest of her life, she would need total care and support.

Professionals who assessed her suggested she be placed in a suitable care home.

After much consideration and family support I decided I wanted to care for her myself in our own home.

After 30 years together I couldn’t bear to be parted from her. I gave up work and dedicated myself to caring for Janet.

Over time things became harder for me to manage, I needed to find help and a place for her to receive care, if only for a few days, but regularly. Simply so I could take a rest.

I used traditional search engines to try to find a suitable care home for my wife locally. It returned six million results, of which only a handful were useful.

When browsing the websites from the few care homes listed, informative as they were, none indicated if they had a vacancy available.

Therefore, I needed to call them individually, only to find they could not help when I needed it, no vacancies. Out of sheer frustration I often gave up.

How could a system be developed by which I could be certain a vacancy was available ‘before’ contacting them?

I had an idea and a solution, over two years I developed The Doris Project.

Not a search engine but an alert system, whereby any care seeker

could alert ALL local care homes of their search for a vacancy. Now launched, a care seeker via thedorisproject.co.uk can, and after entering a few basic details plus a preferred location range, simply press go. The system sends all homes in their chosen area an alert. On receipt of the alert, the care

home simply clicks a single reply button informing them of a vacancy, or ignore if non available.

The care seeker then simply calls them to discuss, ‘knowing’ a vacancy is available should they wish to take it.

For many reasons beds become available in care homes every minute of every day. Doris will find them.

Using The Doris Project anyone can contact any number of homes throughout the UK, instantly, anytime. Care homes can also alert care seekers the moment a vacancy becomes available, thus, filling their available beds, sometimes within minutes.

With The Doris Project there is no need to publish bed vacancies with us or anywhere else, it’s all automated.

Importantly, it is free to use for care seekers, with only a small monthly subscription for care homes to receive the alerts. There are no limits to how many alerts can be sent or received. A truly unique, simple and revolutionary system dedicated to locating ‘actual’ vacancies for people who need it most, taking the stress out of searching for care.

Check out www.thedorisproject.co.uk or Call 01253 700995 for further information and be part of this exciting journey.

87-year-old care home resident publishes his third fiction book

A BRACKNELL care home resident is celebrating after he officially launched his third published fiction book.

John Bennett, who lives at Care UK’s Bickerton House, was joined by members of the local community for a book launch party after publishing his third book, Design for Life, at the age of 87.

Jo Anderson, customer relations manager at Bickerton House, said: “We were thrilled when we heard John had published his third fiction book and we knew we had to organise something to celebrate the launch.

“We are always looking at ways to help residents celebrate important milestones and after some thought the team decided to organise an official book launch party – the perfect way to celebrate John’s new book and all his achievements.

“I’d like to thank all the team for organising such a brilliant event for John. I’d also like to say congratulations to John for publishing his new book. We all can’t wait to read it.”

John had a successful career in the construction industry before becoming a professor of quantity surveying at The University of Reading. His research centre published many influential reports, including ‘Investing in Building 2001’ endorsed by Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher; and ‘Trusting the Team’ which still influences international construction today.

Between 1985 and 2012 he wrote four influential books describing the current theory and best practice of construction management including ‘Construction – The Third Way’.

Since he retired he has turned to writing novels; ‘Design for Life’ is his third book following the success of ‘A Golden Future’ and ‘Heaven on Earth’.

‘Design for Life’ describes a significant stage in the life of Jake Brown, who is a very talented architect at the beginning of his career. Life for Jake changes dramatically when he produces an outstanding design for a building to

A GROUP of directors from across Surrey have taken part in the ultimate challenge to raise money for a charity that supports unpaid carers.

house the science department of the local university. The resulting media attention leads to one of Britain’s leading architects, Sir Andrew Zain, inviting Jake to work with him in London.

The team at Bickerton House wanted to put on a special celebration for John so decided to host an official book launch. They invited members of the local community including Bracknell Library, John’s publishers as well as family and friends for the special celebration.

The head chef prepared a special buffet, canapés and prosecco for everyone to enjoy.

John added: “The inspiration for ‘Design for Life’ was my life-long love of great architecture and the issues arising around sustainability.

“The book took about a year to write from the first ideas to sending the finished product to my publishers.

“I love writing because it really gives me time to think and re-think serious questions that interest me.”

“‘Design for Life’ challenged me to think about my own life and my children, my grandchildren and that my wife and I have been lucky enough to help them grow up into happy adults.”

Residents go extra mile

RESIDENTS at The Hall in Thornton le Dale recently completed 260 laps of the care home’s lawn to raise money for Dementia Forward.

The North Yorkshire charity, which provides vital support for those living with dementia, has developed a strong relationship with the home and often holds events on behalf of the county’s community.

Accompanying the residents for the challenge were the Hall’s friends from nearby Thornton Dale C of E Primary School. The year two and three children, together with the residents, embarked on the challenge, which in total raised more than £1,200 for the charity.

Home manager Diane Hagan said: “I am incredibly proud of our residents, children, family and

friends, who all came together in support of such an amazing charity.

“It was so nice to see the children from the local primary school engaging with our residents and working together to complete the challenge.

“Our residents are always eager to engage with members of the local community and more importantly support organisations like Dementia Forward, who continue to support many of our residents and their families at The Hall.”

Local Ryedale businesses and members of the community made the day extra special by putting on a variety of activities.

At the end of the challenge, participants tucked into a variety of sweet treats.

Fourteen directors took on I’m a Director, Get Me Out of Here, with the Red team and White team battling it out in various ‘Bushtucker’ trials to raise funds for Crossroads Care Surrey, a charity that provides support to unpaid carers in the county.

The event was held at Home of Compassion, a Grade II listed care home in Thames Ditton, part of the Aria Care Group.

Contestants faced their fears in a series of challenges; ranging from handling giant reptiles and tarantulas provided by Tom’s Talking Reptiles to eating some of the most unappealing foods the chefs at the home could create.

They also took part in a series of physical sports day challenges by Team Activity Group and concluded with the losing team being gunged by the winning team.

Contestant Mick Newton, Aria Care’s business development director, said: “When we first heard about

the fabulous work that Crossroads Care Surrey do in supporting unpaid carers, it was an easy choice to get behind and offer to host the first I’m a Director event.

“Home of Compassion was a fitting venue and the day was a huge success, which I felt very privileged to be part of.

“The work doesn’t stop there and having got to know more about the charity and the people that make the magic happen – I am delighted our CEO Caroline Roberts has announced Crossroads Care Surrey as our charity to support for the coming year.”

The event raised more than £19,000.

Crossroads Care Surrey’s David Annand added: “For a first-time event I couldn’t be more pleased. The competitive camaraderie between the 14 directors taking part was something special and what they managed to fundraise so far was truly amazing.

“It’s an amount that will make an enormous positive life changing difference to unpaid carers and those they are caring for. I can’t thank everyone involved enough.”

Residents at Heatherfield Care Home in Armadale were treated to a roaring morning as Linlithgow Classic Car Club paid a visit. A variety of vintage cars were brought to their front door, including a 95-year old Ford and a classic Mini, and the residents spent the day in the sunshine enjoying them. They were able to sit inside, explore the interiors and learn about the old engines, being taught by the members of the club who brought information and photographs about their car’s production, shipping and history. Activities coordinator Roz Smith said: “The residents were absolutely besotted by the cars, it was fantastic to watch them learn and reminisce. We’re so grateful to Linlithgow Classic Car Club for visiting us, and we can’t wait to welcome them back.”

Nurturing with Nature: Caring for Your Loved Ones and Home through the Power of Natural Enzyme Cleaners

Caring for a loved one at home is a deeply compassionate and rewarding undertaking, but it comes with its own set of challenges. As individuals step into the role of caregiver, they are confronted with the physical and emotional demands of assisting their loved ones with daily activities. Among the most trying tasks is continually managing bodily fluids such as urine, faeces, and vomit. These daily clean up challenges can be made easier by embracing natural enzyme cleaners over the continual use of chemical-laden alternatives. Here we delve into the difficulties caregivers face and explore WHY natural enzyme cleaners offer an effective, safer, and more dignified solution for you, your family and your home.

Urine, faeces and vomit are inextricably linked to various medical conditions and age-related ailments. While managing these situations is part of a caregivers daily role, it’s important to consider the impact on the overall well-being and dignity of both the caregiver and the person receiving care. In a quest for cleanliness, caregivers are presented with a limited choice of effective solutions that can handle sometimes excessive and continual cleanups, generally turning to traditional chemical-based cleaning products or commercial strength solutions. Aroma Care Solution’s have over 40 years experience in the commercial cleaning market. Through personal experience, they identified a need for a natural but effective solution to this problem in the home. Enzymes have been used in commercial cleaning for years so harnessing the science of nature and their commercial cleaning secrets, the team developed the Bio one™ range, bringing 100% natural enzyme cleaning to the home, significantly enhancing the caregiving experience and ensuring a healthier living environment for all.

Lasting and stubborn odour occurs when bad bacteria builds up on carbon based residue from urine, faeces, vomit, milk etc. Odours build and remain when the source of the problem isn’t properly removed, especially when the source of the problem is on soft surfaces such as carpets, beds or sofas. Enzymes are naturally occurring in nature and act as catalysts to speed up and assist the breakdown of the organic proteins found in these bodily fluids. As these enzymes come into contact with the organic residue, they initiate the process of enzymatic digestion, effectively breaking down and eliminating completely these complex substances. This natural process not only eliminates odours and stains but also as it is 100% natural and diluted with normal tap water, it can be used all around the home contributing to a safer and more ecofriendly home environment.

Natural enzyme cleaners excel in neutralising odours at their source, which can improve the emotional atmosphere in the home. Walk on the wild side makes Stella’s safari wish come true

A WEST Sussex care home resident was treated to a wish come true with the ‘most lovely and enjoyable’ wildlife safari.

Stella Collister made the 160mile round trip to Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire after telling staff at Colten Care’s Wellington Grange in Chichester that she had always wanted to experience exotic animals up close.

Operator enters ninth year of link with Trust

CARE South, a not-for-profit charity and leading provider of residential and home care across the south of England, is celebrating the ninth year of its partnership with AFC Bournemouth Community Sports Trust and has announced another three seasons working with the Trust.

The partnership with the Trust enables residents, home care clients and staff to get involved in a variety of activities including meeting players, coffee mornings, walking football and visits to the Vitality Stadium.

Simon Bird, chief executive at Care South, said: “The key to our successful partnership is that we have a shared objective; to provide a real benefit to the residents and care at

home clients in our care.

“When you see it in action, you realise why it works. Everyone involved enjoys it – which is why the initiatives within the partnership are so successful.”

Now entering its ninth year, the partnership has been going from strength to strength and is always looking to provide richer experiences for Care South residents and Care at Home clients, creating stimulating and lasting memories through the power of football.

The partnership sees members of the Trust regularly visiting the operator’s homes across Dorset, running sessions for residents including seated football.

Accompanied by four fellow residents, Stella took a drivethrough tour of the world-famous attraction with the opportunity to enjoy spectacular views of monkeys, giraffes, zebras, ostriches and many other park residents.

“It was not your average Tuesday morning,” said Heather Pearce, companionship team leader. “We planned it after a conversation with residents in which Stella said she had never been on a safari and would love to go on one.

“We knew it wouldn’t quite be Africa, but at least we could get to Longleat and back in a day.

“It was an early start for Martin our minibus driver and our residents, but there wasn’t too much traffic on the road and we made it in time for morning coffee before touring round and taking in some amazing sights.

“We got to see lots of the animals out and about and there was laughter all round when the monkeys climbed on the minibus. Thankfully we got away without them damaging or

chewing the aerial.

“After the safari drive and a picnic lunch prepared by our fantastic catering colleagues, we were all ready for a little walk around and the chance to see even more animals.

“Elizabeth, one of our residents from New Zealand, was very excited about visiting the Koala Creek exhibition area and seeing the koalas. They are new to Longleat and it is currently the only safari park in England that has them.

“We saw lots of other animals such as parrots, anteaters, otters and porcupine. We ended the day on a boat trip to feed the seals and see the gorillas. We even got to see Spot the hippo who doesn’t always make an appearance on the river cruise.”

Ratings – will they be fairer under the new CQC regulatory regime?

Current rating limiters

CQC has been rating adult social care providers since October 2014.

The key lines of enquiry and ratings characteristics are meant to promote consistency, accountability and transparency.

As frameworks go, it is a relatively clear and sensible one.

However, what tainted the ratings process was the introduction in November 2017 of a blanket rule that the overall rating for an adult social care service could not be better than ‘requires improvement’ if there was a breach of regulation.

This meant that no matter how good a service was, if there was any identified breach of regulation, the overall rating could be no better than ‘requires improvement.’

In CQC jargon, this rule is called a ‘rating limiter.’

Not every provider is equal under the current system of rating limiters

CQC only applies the above rating limiter to adult social care providers as far as the overall rating is concerned.

If one runs a GP practice and breaches a regulation under the Safe key question, that key question can be no better than ‘requires improvement’ but the overall rating

can still be ‘good’ if all the other key questions are rated ‘good’.

In other words, CQC applies a different rule to adult social care providers compared to other registered providers that are subject to CQC ratings.

Such a situation is fundamentally unfair. The question is whether this difference will cease under the new system of regulation which CQC is in the process of introducing under the ‘single assessment framework’.

Ratings under the single assessment framework

At the beginning of August 2023, CQC published a downloadable document entitled ‘Assessing quality and performance.’

Significantly, CQC says it will

introduce new rating limiters linked to scores for the quality statements under each key question. It is easier to make sense of this change using an example.

For the Safe key question, there will be eight quality statements each of which can have a score of between and four (poor to outstanding).

If a service is in the good rating range across its quality statements under Safe but there is a score of one for one or more quality statements then the rating is limited to ‘requires improvement’.

If a service is in the outstanding rating range under Safe but there is a score of one or two for one or more quality statements, the rating is limited to good.

The idea behind these rating limiters is that “any areas of poor quality are not hidden.”

Positively, they will apply to all registered providers that are rated thus overcoming the inconsistent approach applied by CQC under the current framework.

What CQC has not done is indicate whether a single breach of regulation will limit the overall rating that can be applied to a registered service to ‘requires improvement’, as is the case currently with adult social care providers.

Logically, CQC should apply this overall rating limiter linked to a

breach of regulation to all registered providers given its Enforcement Policy states that “Providers rated as good are meeting the standards set out in the regulations…”

It remains to be seen what effect, if any, a breach of regulation will have on overall ratings under the new regulatory system.

Conclusion

The problem with rating limiters is they do away with professional judgement if they are applied in a blanket fashion.

It would be far better if CQC said that a rating limiter would normally apply as that would allow for an element of professional judgement. However, this would introduce a subjective element into the rating process.

It is far more likely that CQC will apply the new rating limiters in a rigid fashion so it can say it is acting in a consistent way in order to be able to benchmark providers.

We can only hope there is genuine clarity on the part of CQC as to how the scoring system will operate, with a proper means of challenging CQC if the scores are not considered a fair reflection of the quality of the service, given the future of your business may well depend on it.

22 CARINGCARE SHOW PREVIEW

Grants available for home care businesses to go digital

THE UK Government has made £8.2m available through the Adult Social Care Digital Transformation Fund for social care providers moving from paper-based records to digital records systems like CareLineLive.

The Adult Social Care Digital Transformation Fund has been set up to meet the government’s target that 80 per cent of CQC-registered providers, and more than 80 per cent of people in receipt of care, have a digital social care record by March 2024.

The technology needs to contribute to one or more of the following priorities:

n Increase care quality and safety (including safe discharge from hospital).

n Reduce avoidable admission/ readmissions to hospital.

n Increase support for people to live independently in their own home.

Given that the majority of home care providers are actively delivering in each of these areas it would be highly unusual for such providers not to qualify for the funding.

The actual funding that is available will depend on which integrated care system a provider is part of – currently 13 ICSs have received £679,500 each to distribute.

These ICSs will work in partnership with local government, health and care partnerships and care associations.

From paper to IT managed services

FOR too many years we have seen a significant under investment in IT technologies and services across the social care sector.

Even today there are still many medium to large care organisations continuing to use paper based systems.

With the recent CQC / Care Inspectorate focus on a data driven environment and ready access to national and regional digital transformation grants, organisations are starting to invest in care software and associated IT technologies. However, with IT uptime being critical, and with many organisations being geographically spread across the UK, how do you successfully manage your IT?

There are plenty of managed IT services companies out there, but with most being regionally based, and with a focus on multiple business sectors, the unique IT needs of the care sector are often overlooked.

For example, how do you get an average IT reseller to fully understand DSPT compliance?

Workplace IT changed all of this with a specific focus on providing managed IT services to the health

and social care sector with four primary differentiators:

1) We operate across the UK so wherever you have a care home, office or head office you will be supported both from our UK based service desk and on-site.

2) We recognise that everything IT in the care sector is critical, and as such all service desk calls are responded to within 30 minutes and we will attend site within four business hours for all critical issues.

3) We speak your language –understanding the terminology your sector uses, understanding urgency and being patient while care is provided is paramount to a successful IT relationship.

4) We work together by augmenting your existing in-house IT team or operating as your primary IT partner.

These four key differentiators have seen Workplace IT experience significant success, with us now supporting several UK top 20 care organisation including Healthcare Homes Group, Potens and The Disabilities Trust, as well as many medium to small organisations including Notaro Homes, Sears Healthcare and The Care Company.

EARSDON Grange, in Wellfield, near Whitley Bay, has been awarded Diamond Status by North Tyneside Council, in recognition of the improvements made in prevention, identification, escalation and response to any emerging health concerns of those living in the care home.

The facility, which is part of the UK-wide Maria Mallaband Care Group, has been making use of the Whzan system, designed to help staff monitor the health of residents, which was rolled out across North Tyneside back in 2019.

The Whzan box at Earsdon Grange contains a blood pressure monitor, thermometer and blood oxygen monitor, allowing care home staff to take clinical observations and upload them onto a tablet.

The results are analysed by the device and generate a National Early Warning Score which can be shared with other healthcare professionals, including the home managers and the visiting Frailty Nurse.

Healthcare professionals have online access to all the observations which can be used to identify the early deterioration of an individual living in the home, and support clinical decision-making.

Deputy manager Chelsey Thompson said: “The Whzan system notices early signs of deterioration in the elderly so it can help us make sure each person receives the correct level of care at the correct time.

“This ensures they get the right treatment faster when they need it and reduces unnecessary hospital visits or visits from healthcare professionals.

“For example, if someone is unwell or has had a fall, staff have been able to inform healthcare professionals of the clinical observations over the phone and they can make a better decision regarding a follow-up visit or treatment.”

Earsdon Grange has been recognised for its positive use of

this smart telehealth tool with the award of Diamond Status by the council – the highest possible award, after checking off all the requisite requirements for first silver, then gold, and finally diamond.

Care home manager Nicola Bell added: “Diamond Status recognises that all our staff have furthered their knowledge and we’ve made great improvements in terms of prevention, identification and response to any signs of deterioration in the individuals in our care.

“This has been a fantastic effort, the leadership team and staff have really pulled together to make this happen, working hard within the home and with external professionals, including Marie Barrigan and Angela Richardson from Ace Training.

“With the Whzan digital health system, we have improved how we use our local NHS services and, most importantly, enhanced the care of those living with us – which is always our number one priority.

“We are very proud to now hold this Diamond rating.”

Residents make bug hotels

RESIDENTS at The Manor House care home in North Walsham have been busy creating bug hotels which have proved popular among their relatives and visitors.

So popular in fact that they have opened up an order book and will be making the hotels, and other craft items, to sell at a fair at the Norfolk home later this year.

Home manager Paula Pawsey said: “It was Michael Giblin who first saw something online about building bug hotels and, after talking with fellow resident Beryl Sadler and Zoe, our gardener, they agreed to try and build one.

“The project has grown from there and, with the help our maintenance man John, the first bug hotel was made.

“It looks great and is made from

things found in our grounds and a few extras – we have had so many requests for more that we have decided to make them a real feature at our craft show later in the year.”

Group completes care home purchase

ANCHOR has taken the keys to a new purpose-built residential care home in Skipton, bringing the number of facilities in its portfolio to 120.

The Mill House, a 94-bed home including eight residential care apartments in the adjoining historic Mill Lodge, won the Development of the Year category at the Premier Guarantee Excellence Awards 2023. Built for Hadrian Healthcare by construction company Walter Thompson, Anchor exchanged contracts in September last year to acquire the home – together with a second home being built for Hadrian Healthcare in Roundhay, Leeds, and due to open in Summer 2024.

Anchor previously acquired five Hadrian Healthcare homes in 2019.

The Mill House offers an individualised style of living, including a hair and beauty salon, café bar, and private landscaped gardens in a canal-side setting.

Anchor chief executive Sarah Jones said: “The Mill House is a great addition to our care homes and a very visual example of how, in this case through our continuing relationship with Hadrian Healthcare, we create homes where people love living in

later life.

“Residents will instantly notice the considerable attention to detail which has gone into creating the highquality décor and furnishings.

“Important too is the commitment to creating a sustainable and energy-

efficient home.

“It’s built to an Energy Performance Certificate A rating standard, with a focus on sustainable heating systems and generating renewable energy through solar panels.

“At a time when there is a shortage of quality care homes being built across the country to replace ageing stock, I’m really pleased that Anchor is looking ahead to ensure we are meeting the changing needs of residents.

“Our Business Plan states we will invest to create more and better homes – and The Mill House is a clear example of that commitment.”

The Mill House’s first residents, as well as its care team, will come from an established Anchor care home –Thornton Hill – a few miles away.

That smaller home, which was built more than a century ago, will close when all residents have moved to The Mill House.

Provider opens new care home in Skipton

LATER living provider Anchor was joined by Mayor of Skipton, Councillor Sheila Bentley to officially open the doors of its new care home.

The Mill House is a new luxury care home overlooking the Leeds and Liverpool Canal with 86 en-suite rooms and eight independent living apartments.

A regional provider of care homes and services has announced a strategic appointment that will enhance its training provision and, in turn, the quality of its care delivery. HICA Group, which has more than 1,500 employees, has welcomed Carl Taylor as regional trainer. Carl will provide learning and development to staff across a number of the operator’s care home and care services in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire including Grimsby Homecare, The Anchorage, Prospect House, The Birches, The Wolds and Cranwell Court. Carl will spearhead the delivery of comprehensive induction training to new recruits, ensuring they embrace the core values and ethos that have earned HICA Group its reputation in person-centred care. He will also provide requalification training to existing employees, enabling them to stay up to date with the latest industry standards and practices related to care delivery.

Designed to meet the specific needs of residents, the home is built on the site of an old mill and offers state-ofthe-art facilities including restaurants and cafes, a village shop, beauty salon and private landscaped gardens.

The Mill House is located a short distance from the town centre and local amenities and won the Development of the Year category at the Premier Guarantee Excellence Awards 2023.

The Mayor enjoyed a tour of the home after cutting the ribbon to mark the official opening of The Mill House, alongside Anchor’s director of villages and care services Maria Bamford.

Maria said: “We’re very proud of this new high-quality care home, set in a beautiful location overlooking the canal and benefitting from topquality facilities to provide residents with the very best of care.

“With 60 years of experience Anchor is continuously working hard to meet the changing needs and expectations

of our residents, and this latest addition to our portfolio of care homes showcases the progress we are making towards creating more and better homes for older people.

“We look forward to welcoming new residents to this fantastic new location and enabling them to continue to love living later life.”

The Mill House is built to an Energy Performance Certificate A rating standard with a focus on sustainable heating systems and generating renewable energy through solar panels.

The care home will replace Anchor’s Thornton Hill care home on Church

Road and residents and colleagues will move to the new location.

Equipped with modern facilities, the new home has been built to meet the needs of today’s residents and the residents of the future and will provide the highest standard of person-centred residential and dementia care to every resident.

The Mill House is now recruiting for various positions, including care assistants, to join the established care team from Thornton Hill. Every new colleague will receive comprehensive training and professional development opportunities.

Devon’s newest luxury home taking shape

BUILDING work at Claremont Manor, a 71-bed luxury care home in Dawlish, is progressing well and is on course for a grand opening early next year.

This £13million development, which is the latest addition to the Maria Mallaband Care Group portfolio of more than 80 care homes across the UK, is expected to open in early 2024, offering residential, dementia and nursing care.

£12m home opens

THE Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor

Al Garthwaite, has officially opened Guiseley Manor, New Care’s second care home in Yorkshire.

The £12 million state-of-the-art care facility will offer residential, dementia and 24 hour nursing care services.

Al was invited by the operator to cut a red ribbon to declare the home officially open and enjoy a guided tour of the new facility.

She also met key members of the New Care team, including staff from Guiseley Manor, and learned more about the company and the homes it designs and delivers.

Commissioning director Dawn Collett said: “It was a pleasure to welcome the Lord Mayor to Guiseley Manor as our guest of honour and we’re delighted she was able to officially declare the care home open. “It was wonderful talking to her

and her consort, as well as seeing her meet some of the first residents.”

Featuring 74 fully furnished bedrooms, each with a private en-suite wet room, plus a selection of communal lounges, reading rooms and dining rooms, spa-assisted bathrooms, a nail bar, hair salon and access to landscaped communal gardens and terraces, Guiseley Manor provides a living environment for its residents who enjoy person-centred individual care, freshly prepared nutritious meals and a daily programme of wellbeing activities.

Now open and welcoming its first residents, Guiseley Manor is recruiting locally with approximately 100 jobs expected to be created over the next 12 months in multiple roles including nurses, carers, hospitality, housekeeping, wellbeing and activities, maintenance and catering.

The state-of-the-art care home will boast a large number of luxury features, ranging from large en-suite rooms to landscaped grounds with sensitive planting to encourage bees, butterflies and other wildlife to visit the gardens.

The home’s features will include a hair and beauty salon, a cinema room, a wellness suite, private dining and leisure suite.

The home will also include a grandchildren’s room, where families with younger children can meet and enjoy time together.

Sabrina Waterhouse, customer relations manager, said: “We are entering a really exciting point in the build, where we are starting to see the different spaces forming and identity each room and lounge.

“We are now able to get a good feel for the generous size of the entire home.

“Every day is revealing a new part of the home and all that it can become.

“The home has already brought a

lot of interest since there is currently nothing like Claremont Manor in the Dawlish community and there is definitely a buzz around the home.”

The new home will have a big emphasis on wellbeing and lifestyle, in line with MMCG’s More… lifestyle programme.

Claremont Manor will offer a wealth of activities and opportunities, all of which will be tailored to meet the needs of mind, body, and soul of each individual, according to their interests, ensuring that they can continue to live life as they had done prior to moving into the home.

Sabrina added: “We strive to help those living with us to retain their independence and maintain their hobbies and passions because we understand that moving into a new environment is never an easy thing, so we want to ensure that their experience living with us is as comfortable and enjoyable and they can keep living life to the fullest.”

Service excellence continues as hallmark of Gainsborough Specialist Bathrooms

Understanding design

Bathrooms can potentially pose a risk to residents and carers with slip and fall hazards possible across all spaces. Tackling this challenge can be made easier by procuring design skills from proven specialists in the accessible arena, such as Gainsborough.

Not only does its team of bathroom designers employ the latest innovations through ArtiCAD, Gainsborough also leverages over three decades of clinical understanding in terms of user needs.

Price not always the point

Profitability continues to become increasingly squeezed as overheads rise and client affordability falls. These market conditions can naturally dictate a trend towards cheaper, lower quality bathing solutions – but is that sensible?

Will that investment provide long-term dividends? Prudent procurement departments will instead choose higher value baths that last.

Packaging peace of mind

Efficient FM relies on a roster of trusted suppliers who deliver dependable equipment and responsive support.

Product specialists who deliver in this respect tend to provide equally

robust warranties and servicing, such as Gainsborough. Its choice of service packages with LOLER testing adds value to the proposition as managers are able to tailor provision according to the demands on their equipment.

Higher hygiene

Gainsborough remains at the forefront of hygiene developments with its integrated BioCote technology. Present as a constitute part of the GRP manufacturing process, this silver-ion additive ensures up to 99.99 per cent of microbes cannot exist on a treated bath surface. With infection control an absolute top priority not just for care, but to avoid the commercial crisis caused by viral outbreaks, any complementary solution such as BioCote is a welcome addition.

Frontline testimonials

Ed Riches, support services manager for Ardale care homes, has worked with Gainsborough baths for several

years. Responsible for facilities management at locations such as Potters Grange in Hertfordshire, he said: “Ardale works with Gainsborough as we believe they are one of the leaders in this sector and provide dependable solutions and service. We, as a care provider, always want to be the best and so therefore we install the best.”

Think beyond baths

The best choice tends to be the considered choice. Gainsborough represents that choice in assisted bathing solutions for care homes and rehabilitation facilities. This specialist manufacturer has prowess across both product and service; innovation and excellence that results in better care, performance and long-term ROI. Cost cutting can be achieved by purchasing cheaply, but that’s not the smart way.
