Quality of life ‘improved by interaction’
By Dominic Musgrave
INCREASING the amount of social interaction for people with dementia living in care homes to just one hour a week improves quality of life when combined with personalised care. A large-scale trial led by the University of Exeter, King’s College London and Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust found that the approach also saves money. Previous research has found that in many care homes, residents have as little as two minutes of social interaction per day. The new study, funded by the National Institute of Health Research, upskilled key care home staff to deliver person-centred care. That involved simple measures such as talking to residents about their interests and including them in decisions around their own care. When combined with one hour a week of social interaction, the programme improved quality of life and reduced agitation and aggression in people with dementia. Professor Clive Ballard, of the University of Exeter Medical School, who led the research, said: “While many care homes are excellent, standards still vary hugely. “We have previously found that the average amount of social interaction for people with dementia was just two minutes a day.
“It’s hardly surprising when that has a knock-on effect on quality of life and agitation. “Our approach improves care and saves money. We must roll out approaches that work to do justice to some of the most vulnerable people in society. “Incredibly, of 170 carer training manuals available on the market, only four are based on evidence that they really work. That is simply not good enough – it has to change.” The trial involved more than 800 people with dementia across 69 care homes in South London, North London and Buckinghamshire. Two ‘care staff champions’ at each home were trained over four day-long sessions to take simple measures that such as involve talking to residents about their interests and decisions around their own care. The approach also saved money compared to standard care. Researchers say the next key challenge is to roll the programme to the 28,000 care homes in the UK to benefit the lives of the 300,000 people with dementia living in these facilities. The results are the findings of the Improving Wellbeing and Health for People with Dementia trial, the largest non-pharmacological randomised control trial in people with dementia living in care homes to date.

Grandfather turns Godfather with his latest novel A Durham care home is helping residents and members of the community with dementia to build up a support network thanks to its ‘Forget Me Not’ café. HC-One’s Grampian Court in Peterlee opened its doors to visitors for an afternoon tea, with residents Ivy and Irene acting as ‘tea ladies’ to hungry guests. Home manager Judith Tully said: “The afternoon tea went down a storm with everyone who attended and Ivy and Irene were extremely attentive and courteous to residents. It’s important to us that we provide a supportive environment where people with dementia can feel relaxed and secure. We’re looking forward to making these visits a regular occurrence.”
Care service rated ‘Outstanding’ A BROMLEY care service has been rated Outstanding overall by the Care Quality Commission. Home Instead Senior Care – Bromley, Chislehurst & Orpington is a domiciliary care agency providing personal care to people living in their own home. The service was rated Outstanding for being well-led and caring and Good for being safe, effective and responsive following a CQC
inspection in October 2017. Inspectors found staff treated people and their relatives with kindness, dignity and respect. Debbie Ivanova, CQC’s deputy chief inspector of adult social care, said: “Home Instead Senior Care – Bromley, Chislehurst & Orpington is a fine example of a domiciliary care service where management and staff are prepared to give that bit extra to make the service Outstanding.”
A RETIRED plumber from Glasgow is set to publish his second novel – just over a month since his first became a national media sensation. William Glen’s latest novel follows the lives of four retirement home residents who, after becoming involved with a dangerous local gangster, end up committing two murders. Those intrigued by his first gripping plot line that centred on a fight between South American drug barons, certainly won’t be disappointed with his new book. William, 96, a tenant at Bield’s Carntyne Gardens, said: “It all takes place after one of the residents wins the lottery – they’re approached by a mafia man who demands they pay him £1million for protection. “They don’t want to give up their fortune but they can’t see a way out. So, they electrocute him – they didn’t want to make a mess in their new mansion, you see.” But after thinking the coast is clear, the four residents quickly find themselves in deep water, as they learn the gangster had a body guard. Having never been involved in such grave situations before, the characters use what they’ve seen in films as a murder ‘how-to’ guide.
William added: “Most stories focus on the run up to the murder, and the mysteries around whodunit, but I’m more interested in how and when characters decide to kill someone and how they cover it up.” Once the book is finished, William plans to send the aptly named ‘An Age for Murder’ to publishers. Before putting pen to paper for his second action-packed fiction tale, he completed a more serious autobiographical work about events that took place while he was wounded in Normandy during the war. William added: “Sales of my first book have been coming along quite the thing since all the media attention. I’ve been handing out copies left, right and centre and have had great feedback from friends and family and even some good reviews on Amazon. “People always want to know the secrets of what inspires my writing, but the truth is I’m just mad.” Carol Harvey, deputy manager at Carntyne Gardens, added: “Mr Glen’s practically a celebrity here. Everyone’s been so inspired by his passion for writing. Especially considering writing isn’t something he’s always done – it’s a talent that he discovered in retirement.”

Caregiver who gave client reason to live wins award
Somerset Care has announced the appointment of Pat Ellesmere as the new manager at Sunnymeade care home in Chard. She is a familiar face in the care sector, having worked for Somerset Care for the past 30 years. She began her career at Burnworthy House in South Petherton, starting as a cook and expanding on her skills and knowledge in the sector before moving to Sunningdale Lodge in Yeovil. At Sunningdale Lodge, Pat worked her way up to management and transferred to Oak Trees in Bridgwater in 2012. She said: “I’m really pleased to have been appointed as the manager at Sunnymeade. I’ve really enjoyed my first month; it’s been lovely getting to know the residents and staff.”
A MUM of two from Dudley has earned Home Instead Senior Care’s highest accolade as a result of her commitment to caring for older people. One client described Lynne Higgins, the newly crowned caregiver of the year, as having given them a reason to live. When this client first came to Home Instead she was housebound, had low self-esteem and lived in poor conditions. Sadly, she did not have any living family and no friends. Fortunately for this lady, Lynne became her caregiver and she made it her business to win the client’s trust and help bring more joy to her life. Three years ago, as Christmas approached, Lynne discovered that the lady had never had a Christmas tree, not even as a child, though she thought they were pretty. She immediately rallied the team back at the office, receiving donations of decorations and even a beautiful tree. Lynne then spent an afternoon of her own time decorating the client’s flat. Described by her employers as consistently going above and beyond, Lynne even asked other caregivers to donate gifts so that the client would have something to open on Christmas morning. The lady went on to describe it as the best Christmas she had ever had

Joy swaps pulling pints for a career in care ... By Dominic Musgrave
A GRANDMOTHER of five who ran a pub for over 25 years has swapped pulling pints to caring for vulnerable clients of Caremark Barnsley instead. Joy Glover, who is in her sixties and has worked all her adult life, has even delayed her retirement because she enjoys her job so much. She said: “I love all my clients dearly and I love the variety. I care for people with all different needs and abilities. “Amongst others, I care for an elderly client who sadly lost her husband a couple of years ago, and we’ve become very close. “I can’t imagine retiring and not being there for my regular clients – I need them just as much as they need me.” Joy is part of a growing trend of mature care workers who, instead of slowing down or retiring completely, choose a more rewarding and fulfilling path. For Joy, her journey into care is one of overcoming adversity after the recession hit and she found herself in need of a new career. Now, after seven years, she says she can’t imagine doing anything else. “My husband and I worked happily together for 25 years, running our
Joy Glover pub and raising our three children,” she added. “In 2011, like so many others, we fell victim to the recession and we couldn’t afford to keep the pub open anymore. For the first time in years, I found myself without a job – and my only experience was pulling pints. “That’s when I saw the care worker advert. I’d spent all those years caring for our punters in the pub, I knew a full-time career in caring for those who most needed it would suit me down to the ground!
“I’m a real people person and have always enjoyed looking out for others. “Thankfully, Caremark could see a lot of potential in me. I’ve been working with the company for seven years, this year – and I’ve loved every second of it.” Andrew Peace and Mark McKenning launched Caremark Barnsley in the Autumn of 2011, and Joy joined the team as one of their first care workers. Thanks to her loving nature, hard work and expertise, Joy is now an integral part of Caremark Barnsley. So much so that Andrew said he cannot imagine running the place without her. He added: “Joy definitely lives up to her namesake – she’s a joy to work with and a great example for the younger members of our team. “She gets on with the task in hand, is always willing to help and has a smile on her face. “Mark and I are delighted, as are the rest of the team, that Joy has decided to delay her retirement. “We’re sure her clients feel the same way too. “Myself and Mark would love to see more mature carers joining the Caremark Barnsley team – Joy is proof that a career in care is fulfilling at any age.”

He said: “Grove Place has set a new standard for retirement communities across Hampshire and the south east, and it’s a privilege to join a company that invests in delivering high quality care and service throughout. With over a decade spent working at a senior level in the hospitality sector, guest experience is of the utmost importance to me, and I am enjoying getting to know all of the residents at Grove Place, working closely with them to ensure that they enjoy an enriched quality of life and calibre of care.”

‘Good’ rated Care worker wins new car for home has a completing company survey new name THE Burnham Nursing and Care Home in Burnham-on-Sea has been renamed ‘Priory Court Care & Nursing Home’. The name change marks a new chapter for the facility, which received an overall ‘Good’ rating in all areas following their recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission. “We wanted to mark this new chapter for our care and nursing home with a new name,” said home manager Raji Sunil. “We’ve made many positive changes here; from a complete refurbishment of the top floor and communal areas, new staff and management team and now our overall ‘Good’ CQC report. “We felt that the time was right to announce a change of name.” The name ‘Priory Court’ ensures that links to the local area in Burnham-on-Sea are retained, and the former use of the buildings as a convent is acknowledged at the same time as being a new chapter for the care and nursing home. The team at Priory Court is currently working towards its Gold Standards Framework accreditation in end-of-life care. The facility is home to up to 71 residents and offers nursing, residential and dementia care.
A LONG standing employee of Barchester Healthcare has been rewarded with a new car for her participation in the company’s 2017 Employee Engagement Survey. Betty Verran, a carer in Kenwyn Care Home in Truro, Cornwall, was presented with the keys to a Fiat 500 in Bossa Nova White from chief executive Pete Calveley and Adrian Pancott, chief operating officer. Betty, originally from Truro, has been an employee of Barchester for the past 24 years, working evenings at Kenwyn since the official opening in 1993. Aged 70, she now works part time in the home alongside her daughter-in-law. Betty said: “I was very surprised to see that I had won the car I didn’t believe it at first! It’s a real joy working for a company like Barchester, I’ve made fantastic friends with the staff and with the residents within the home. I hope to continue working at Kenwyn as long as I can.” Barchester’s Employee Engagement Survey took place in November last year, and was sent out to over 15,000 employees across all levels of the company to gather insight into what is important to their staff and to measure and improve engagement. Everyone who completed the survey and supplied their name was entered into the draw with a chance to win the coveted car. Alongside the grand
prize, 50 additional employees were also awarded a £200 gift card each. The 2017 Employee Engagement Survey, now in its third year, had the highest number of responses to date. Barchester plans to use the results from the survey to improve all areas of the business and enhance employee satisfaction overall, which will further improve the quality of care given to residents and patients. A year-on-year comparison of the survey results from 2015, 2016 and 2017 shows an increase in positive responses to all of the questions. The biggest shifts have been seen in the company’s approach to internal communication and employee rewards. Genevieve Glover, HR director at
Barchester Healthcare, added: “We are delighted to be awarding one of our longest-standing employees with a new car. Over the past 25 years, Barchester Healthcare has grown to become one of the UK’s largest providers of high-quality care – and it’s all thanks to our people. “We are proud of our culture at Barchester Healthcare. It is something we’ve built by sticking to our principles and listening to our employees. “The feedback helps direct how we can improve our quality of care to our residents and patients, and we will continue to invest strongly in our employees through our various training, reward and benefit schemes.”

HR manager climbs mountain for charity
Caring Homes Group’s organisational development manager Rachel Harrison (pictured left) and dementia training lead Michele Saunders have been awarded Medals of Excellence for their work in developing and delivering the company’s City & Guilds accredited or ILM endorsed programmes. Medals of Excellence are awarded annually to a small number of individuals who have developed outstanding knowledge, skills, displayed versatility, originality and innovation in their role either as a result of attending or delivering training. 59 individuals worldwide were awarded the accolade this year, with Rachel and Michele being the only two from within the health and social care sector to successfully meet the criteria.
Care homes awarded five stars EIGHT Lancashire care homes have been awarded five stars in the latest round of independent assessments carried out by accredited ‘quality’ assessment company RDB Star Rating. Janet Farrington the registered manager at Moor Park House, which has participated in the scheme for the past nine years, said: “I feel that the RDB inspection is a helpful tool to judge your service against. It explores the key elements of care and quality within the home. “ The inspector we had was very
professional and his approach made everyone he spoke to feel at ease. His findings about our service related directly to CQC expectations and specific regulations which gave us solid information to work with in regard to the inspection process. The end report was concise and matched the verbal appraisal which was given on the final day of inspection.” The RDB Star Rating Annual Assessment Programme is also available to individual and group residential providers throughout the country.
A HUMAN resources manager from Bradford has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, raising over £1,000 for Young Minds Trust. Daniel Czajka, from Saltaire based Czajka Care Group, which operates five West Yorkshire nursing and care homes, chose to support the mental health charity following the devastating loss of the son of a colleague. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, standing at almost 5,895 metres above sea level. Daniel said: “Young Minds helps to improve the mental well-being of children and young people. A greater understanding of mental health at a younger age is essential, and this can only be achieved by creating awareness and helping to encourage young people to talk more openly. “If we can do this, it will ultimately help to prevent so many tragedies, and also benefit society as a whole.” Daniel summited the mountain at 7am local time, having started out on the last stage of his climb at midnight. He added: “With the travellers’ bug I picked up two days before the summit, it was definitely more of a challenge nursing my stomach along the way, but it was also the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. “During summiting night there was a huge snowstorm, which did make things a little trickier. In total the climb took six days from the start to
Daniel Czajka at the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. the summit and back down.” Daniel is now in training to climb Mont Blanc in summer, and he hopes to raise more money for Young Minds. Czajka’s managing director, Konrad Czajka, added: “We are all very proud of Daniel for raising a significant sum for Young Minds, which does such invaluable work supporting vulnerable young people. “In the past he has taken part in various gruelling fitness events like tough mudder, to raise money for a whole host of charities including Cancer Research, Shipley Stroke Club and Alzheimer’s Society, and we will all be backing him again later this year with his charitable challenge climbing Mont Blanc.”

Maritime care facility Intercall launches Touch series wins technology grant THE Royal Alfred Seafarers’ Society has launched an innovative therapy programme at its Banstead home after winning a £5,000 grant to fund new technology. The Society will use the Santander Foundation Discovery Grant to purchase five new iPads to aid resident activities at the Society’s care home, Belvedere House. The iPads will be used for activities including the home’s new Music Therapy Programme run by its team of 30 volunteers. Staff will be able to teach the elderly residents how to utilise new technology including how to send emails, listen to music and take photos using the iPads. The Royal Navy Association has also donated several iPads to the Society as part of Project Semaphore to
improve communication for the Navy veterans who find a home from sea at Belvedere House. Chief executive, Commander Brian Boxall-Hunt, said: “The Royal Alfred Seafarers’ Society is committed to providing a comfortable and stimulating environment for residents. “With this grant we can teach residents how to use new technologies and make our activities as useful and enjoyable as possible. “With 150 years of dedicated care to our name we want to encourage residents to use new technology to feel comfortable in an ever-changing world. These iPads are the perfect tool to ensure those who stay at Belvedere House are connected to the outside world and feel able to participate in wider society.”
AS A market leader in the design and development of nurse call systems, Intercall has developed the Touch series, which expands on the features of the best-selling Intercall 600/700 series. The Touch Series introduces a stylish design with a number of new features, one in particular is the Care Card, a low cost RFID card, used by staff as a means to identify who attends calls. Staff are assigned their own card checking in and out of rooms as they interact with patients, making it quick and easy to locate and track colleagues in a busy building. Care Cards are also configured to open doors, giving staff access to sensitive and restricted areas, with all system activity and movement recorded in the nursecall data log. Intercall’s Safeguard solution helps balance care with minimal intrusion. The Safeguard system monitors a
patient’s environment, alerting staff to a wandering resident ‘out of bed’. The system automatically illuminates a light in the resident’s room, reducing the risk of falls. The use of thermal imaging technology greatly improves reliability over traditional methods such as pressure mats. Intercall’s Cloud service uses the power of the web to allow secure remote access to your Intercall system – anytime, anywhere. Simply by logging into your own secure account you can instantly review real time reports and monitor the performance of individual sites. What’s more, Intercall Cloud’s compatibility means it can be retro fitted onto existing Intercall 600/700 systems, keeping costs to a minimum. The Intercall Touch Series is a family of stylish products that look as good as they work.

Rhona on ‘last lap’ of memoirs with support from caring staff By Dominic Musgrave A FORMER teacher is close to completing her memoirs despite being registered blind, thanks to special technology and staff at a Hastings care home. Rhona Handcock, 86, began her life history several years ago but had to put her writing on hold because of her husband’s failing health. The couple moved into Hastings Court care home on The Ridge in November when the struggle to manage Mike’s health needs became too much. Hastings Court is a purpose built, 80-bed care home providing personcentred residential, nursing and dementia care. “Before we moved I had dangerously high blood pressure because daily life was so stressful,” said Rhona. “But now I can relax; I know my husband is safe and cared for, we’re much closer to family here and I can get on with my writing.” Rhona, who met her husband as a newly qualified teacher, has retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic disorder which destroys cells in the retina. Registered blind in 1996, she uses a specially adapted keyboard and software that reads her work to her and allows her to make the type on the screen much bigger.
Rhona Handcock sat at her specially adapted computer. Her memories of Hastings include four years in the town in the 1960s when her husband was a teacher at St Paul’s Church of England primary school, now St Paul’s Academy, in St Leonards-on-Sea. “Being in Hastings was a special time for us, it’s where we had our first two children,” added Rhona. “Now it’s going to be the place I complete my memoirs in and that’s very exciting.” Home manager Georgina Gamble said they were delighted to be able to keep Rhona and Mike together.
She added: “We always do our best to accommodate couples, especially after 59 years of marriage. Rhona could have stayed at home because she’s completely independent, but being able to move into our residential ‘Bluebell’ suite means she’s got none of the worries of maintaining a house, she has her husband close by and she can get on with her writing.” Rhona said she was inspired to write her memoirs by her two children and five grandchildren who enjoy listening to her stories.

Technology installed at care home CARING Homes has installed its first Tovertafel (‘Magic Table’ in Dutch) at Mellish House care home. The Tovertafel is an awardwinning innovation from the Netherlands. The technology contains a series of games for people living with mid-to-late stage dementia. It has been designed to encourage instinctive participation, inviting engagement and stimulating a level of physical and social activity rarely seen in people living with dementia in the later stages of their journey. Glenda Davison, activity co-ordinator at Mellish House, said: “When I read about the Tovertafel I was blown away with the possibilities it held for our residents. “It was wonderful to see the community come together to raise the money so quickly and make sure that Mellish House remains at the forefront of dementia innovation and care.” John Ramsay, CEO of Shift 8 Limited – the company which brought the Tovertafel to the UK – added: “It’s been incredibly moving seeing the residents interact with the Tovertafel games and each other.”

STAFF at Barchester Healthcare’s Wimbledon Beaumont Care Community have welcomed a new general manager to head up the team. Nicolas Kee Mew will oversee the running of the 46-bed home and will be responsible for a team of 56. Prior to starting in this position he was manager of the Arthur House Care Home in Wimbledon, which was rated outstanding by the CQC. Nicolas came to the UK as an accounting student, and started as a part-time housekeeper in 2006, aged 19, before making his way up to the position of care home manager. An active fundraiser, Nicolas also appeared in Skills for Care’s national campaign to encourage young people to join the care sector, and frequently volunteers for the Alzheimer’s Society and Dementia Friends, hosting two sponsored runs with a local school and church on behalf of the latter. He said: “I am delighted to join the team here at Wimbledon Beaumont,
Nicolas Kee Mew and I am enjoying meeting and getting to know our residents. “I’m looking forward to managing this home and continue to provide high quality care. I plan to use my innovative ideas to promote dignity at Wimbledon Beaumont, and make activities here at the home even more engaging by introducing new technologies.”
Hackney care service rated Inadequate
A DOMCILIARY care service based in Hackney has been rated as Inadequate overall by the CQC. Havilah Office was rated as Inadequate for being safe, effective and well-led. It was rated Requires Improvement for being caring and responsive following an inspection in October 2017. At a
previous inspection in May 2017, CQC rated the service as Requires Improvement, identified breaches of three regulations and served a warning notice in relation to safety, care and treatment. At this most recent inspection inspectors found that the service had not taken adequate action to improve.

BNF paper confirms importance of eggs
01202 233463
THE Nutrition Bulletin has published new research showing how older people could benefit from increased egg consumption. It follows advice from the Food Standards Agency (FSA), which confirms that vulnerable groups can now eat eggs runny, as long as they are produced to British Lion standards. The findings build on previous research which shows that protein, of which eggs are a high quality source, is an essential nutrient for older people, as low protein intake is associated with both undernutrition and sarcopenia (a reduction in muscle size and strength). Studies also show that protein intake amongst older people is often only sufficient at their main meal and is particularly low at breakfast, making it even more important to include eggs on the menu throughout the day. Growing evidence suggests that, in addition to physical activity, eating 25-30g of protein at each meal may help combat loss of muscle size and muscle strength in older people. As well as containing high quality protein and omega-3 fatty acids, there are a number of other key nutrients found in eggs that may benefit the health of older people. These include vitamin D, B vitamins, selenium, iodine and choline, as well
as a significant proportion of leucine, an amino acid that is believed to be important for muscle health. The new advice from the FSA concerning ‘runny eggs’, combined with the latest research highlighting the benefits of eggs for older people, means there has never been a better time to put eggs back on the menu. Colleges working on new project FUN and friendship were on the menu for young children and elderly care home residents taking part in a ground-breaking activity at Reading College and Banbury and Bicester College. Students and staff at the colleges have been working on an exciting new project, inspired by the Channel 4 TV programme “Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds”. The successful show explored the health and wellbeing benefits that both pre-schoolers and the older generation can benefit from by spending time together. It also highlighted what can be gained when different generations mix, share and learn together. To help them with this ambitious project, named ‘The Gift’, early years and health and social care students and staff at the two colleges, both part of education group Activate Learning, joined together with local care homes and nurseries, with the first successful session at Reading College and the second at the Banbury campus. Kim Franks, development manager at St Lukes Care Home, said: “We feel very privileged to be asked to take part in this exciting project. “I feel that the residents have benefited greatly from the
interaction, fun and friendship they experienced through spending time with the children. “We have only been involved in one session so far and the residents are already asking if they can go again. One lady said that ‘she loved singing songs with the children and doing all the actions as it reminded her of when her daughter was little’ while another said that ‘being able to talk to the children was the best thing, and I definitely want to go again.’” Salwa Boon, director of curriculum design and delivery at Activate Learning, added: “We are hoping that these sessions will allow children and older people get to know each other, have fun and develop trust and friendship. “The benefits of this project are numerous for all parties involved. For the nursery children, these are in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage and will build on their personal, social and emotional development, including developing a positive sense of themselves and others, whilst forming respectful social skills. “For the residents of the care homes, benefits can include greater emotional well-being which can lead to improved physical health and better cognitive performance.”
New Care carer Emma Roberts and resident Jean Ashcroft at Ashlands Manor in Sale.
Group is first to install device in all its homes
NEW Care is the first care home group in the UK to install the revolutionary Dechoker anti-choking device in all its centres. Lightweight and easy to use, Dechoker can be quickly placed over the mouth and nose in a choking emergency and uses directed suction to instantly remove whatever is blocking the airway within seconds. Uniquely it can be used if the individual is either sitting up or lying down where conventional first aid choking procedures, which include back blows and abdominal thrusts, can prove difficult to deliver to some residents with a variety of conditions. Proven to save lives, it is already well used in the USA and Spain but is relatively new to the UK, and New Care is one of the first to adopt the
new device and provide it in all its homes. Chief operating officer at New Care, Cath Fairhurst, said: “The comfort and safety of our residents is of the utmost importance to us, and when we heard about Dechoker we knew that it would be the right decision to provide it in all of our homes. “It is now fully operational in all three care centres and will be provided as a company standard in every new one.” Dechoker UK director Matt Oakley has worked with New Care to train a number of employees who have since gone on to educate their colleagues and teach them how to use the Dechoker device so that all carers across the group are ready to use it should the situation arise.

Games should be suitable for players of all ages ... By John Ramsay WHEN people think of playing games it brings about fond memories of young children playing with their siblings and friends, laughing and bringing joy to all those around them. However, what doesn’t always spring to mind is images of older generations, who equally have the right to play and enjoy life. There have been numerous studies that prove the positive effects that playing has in stimulating cognitive, social and physical well-being for all ages. Dementia affects over 850,000 people across the United Kingdom, in a multitude of different ways. The early symptoms can consist of forgetfulness, mood swings and collecting - each of which develop as people go further along their journey. Mid-to-late stage dementia is when people can experience more aggressive behaviour but also become withdrawn in their nature, having to be encouraged to participate in social activity. Some studies suggest that up to 90 per cent of dementia patients residing in a care home can remain physically passive for most of the day. This level of passivity negatively influences their physical and cognitive well-being and as a consequence of this, their quality of life is severely affected. It’s important that care home personnel inspire and encourage interaction with their residents to ensure that no one is being left behind. Research Recently, innovations in technology
John Ramsay have led scientists to discover different variables that both positively and negatively affect people with dementia. Hester Le Riche, in her PhD research that spanned over six years, exposed the importance of games for those with dementia; establishing a narrative illustrating how everyone can experience moments of happiness no matter their age or situation. There are numerous factors that contribute to these moments of happiness to ensure a high standard of living for all those on their dementia journey, their families and the care personnel. Stimulating environment Dementia affects people differently and it can be hard to predict how a resident will react to interaction, whether they are cooperative, hesitant or oppositional. Hester’s research highlighted the nine strategies to stimulate residents on their dementia journey; humour and optimism, awareness, stimulating self-confidence, creating a safe
environment, personal attention, time, adopting a resolute position, emphasising ‘doing together’, and playing along with their experiences. Additionally, it is key to recognise how the residents affect each other’s mood. This can vary from standoffish, supportive or nurturing, which in turn affects how residents stimulate or demotivate each other. Every game won’t be suitable for every resident, and it is important for the environment to be completely suitable before starting to ensure it inspires interactions and engagement. Games design The different stages of dementia impact how the brain is stimulated in general and when playing games. Those with early stage dementia best react to games that feature upheaval, challenge, fellowship and humour yet those with Alzheimer’s must avoid games with exploration elements. When creating a game, it must be inclusive for all players to ensure they remain stimulated and engaged but these games must also be safe. Hester discovered that playing games with projected lights onto a table, as the Tovertafel does, is an extremely safe environment and as inclusive as possible. Furthermore, a game needs to make sure it encourages players to take part, as those who are quite withdrawn, and passive wouldn’t necessarily actively reach out to play. These games can feature constantly engaging activities such as
catching a ball, fishing or sweeping leaves. Games trigger feelings of reminiscence and a sense of purpose due to the repetitive nature that encourages players to be engaged for longer. In some cases, this can help slow down cognitive decline. Community and families The beauty of playing games is that it is an entirely inclusive activity and doesn’t alienate people by age, or mental and physical capabilities. In the case of dementia friendly games, they don’t only help those with dementia engage with their surroundings, but also encourages their families, friends and carers to get involved where they might have been reluctant previously. Residents further down their dementia journey who are typically very withdrawn, can engage with their families while they play the games. Some care homes have established partnerships with both primary and secondary schools to relive memories and encourage their playful nature which has had extremely positive effects in the care home environment. Hester’s research has proven the wondrous effects that gaming can have in stimulating cognitive, physical and social activity. Advancements in technology have encouraged care homes to make sure that they join together to ensure they host a stimulating environment for all residents and make sure that their residents enjoy a high standard of living no matter their circumstances. n John Ramsay is CEO of Shift 8, the company bringing Tovertafel to the UK.

Dorgard For years Dorgard has been helping care and residential homes to legally hold their fire doors open, making movement around the care setting much easier for residents and staff. As a result of ongoing development there are now three types of Dorgard, offering you a tailored solution to your specific setting and need. All Dorgards release your fire door to automatically close when the fire alarm sounds. For most applications the original Dorgard offers a quick and easy method. The new Dorgard SmartSound has in addition refined sound recognition, meaning that it will not trigger the fire door to close when vacuum cleaning. The Dorgard Pro can either be acoustically triggered or hard wired into your fire alarm system. The Dorgard Pro system is ideal therefore for larger settings and can provide cover for up to 500 fire doors. The Pro also offers you the ability to check the status of all your Dorgards at one glance.

CARINGNEWS
A hard working and deciated woman has progressed from doing dishes in a care home kitchen to becoming the youngest care home manager at Balhousie Care Group. Caring UK found out more
Jozi makes a career out of caring – with ‘ridiculously amazing’ success “MAKE Today Ridiculously Amazing” says a piece of art on Jozi Stables’ office wall. It joins other words of encouragement as well as many photos – of the residents and staff of the care home where she has just been appointed manager. At the age of 27, Jozi heads up 48 full and parttime staff at Balhousie Ruthven Towers, a Scottish facility which has achieved top Grade 6 ratings from the Care Inspectorate for its management, leadership and standards of care. Jozi is a two-time finalist in the Scottish Care Awards, for her innovative practice techniques and for a training and development programme between Balhousie Care Group and the Prince’s Trust Scotland. The operator joined forces with the Trust to offer young people the opportunity to train for a career in the care sector. For Jozi it was important to help raise awareness about working in the care sector, and the prospects awaiting young people who entered it. “There are many different perceptions about what a care role looks like and there is a lack of awareness about how rewarding and varied it can be,” she said. “By introducing young people to the industry in partnership with organisations such as the Prince’s Trust, we have been able to open up the care sector to people who perhaps wouldn’t have considered it before,” she says. At the age of 14 Jozi began working in a care home kitchen part time doing dishes and soon realised
Jozi Stables, manager of Ruthven Towers. that she wanted to make this sector her career. She joined Balhousie Care Group as a shift leader in Huntly, Aberdeenshire. Jozi was then asked by the company to work at its head office in Perth in a learning and development position. “But I missed being in the homes too much,” she added. After joining Ruthven Towers in the town of Auchterarder as an assistant care home manager in June 2015, Jozi was promoted to care home manager in October 2016. Among her qualifications are distance learning courses in health and social
care, and Scottish Vocational Qualifications, including a Leadership & Management in Cares Services SVQ. Ruthven Towers was awarded the Grade 6 ratings for Management and Leadership and also Care and Support after measures were introduced which saw residents, their families and staff involved in everything from policy and recruitment to activities at the home. Jozi is modest about her achievements, emphasising the support of her colleagues and managers at Balhousie. She added: “It may sound cheesy but working here is like being part of a family. Some of the staff have been here for 20 plus years. To me that’s important because you’ve got consistency for the residents.” The feeling of family and support is strong within Ruthven Towers and it’s a theme that spills over into the home’s local community work too. For Jozi and her staff, community involvement could be anything from meeting local councillors to inviting preschoolers for storytime sessions to donating Oor Wullie annuals to a local school. “I’m passionate about community engagement. Right now I’m doing a lot of networking and learning, attending community meetings and meeting local councillors and GPs. “It’s good to hear other people’s ideas and how things work in different companies and organisations. I’m a bit like a sponge at the moment,” she concluded.

We can help with your project Cleaner air with carpets IN people over the age of 65, 21 per cent of deaths are a result of lung diseases, which includes conditions such as asthma, Chronic Obstructive pulmonary disease and other longstanding respiratory illness.* Statistics show on average we spend 90 per cent of our time indoors, which is likely to increase for the elderly who are less mobile, therefore indoor air quality is vitally important. According to The World Health Organisation one of the biggest risk factors for an asthma attack is the inhalation of substances and particles that may provoke the airways. There are many studies which conclude that carpets can improve indoor air quality by capturing the allergens in its fibres, therefore preventing them from circulating back into the air. The allergens should then be removed through regular vacuuming.
There are other studies which suggest that walking on hard surfaces disturbs more particles, causing them to become airborne into the breathing zone. In comparison on carpet more of these particles remain in the carpet fibres, resulting in less dust in the breathing zone. Danfloor’s healthcare carpet collection is specifically designed for the care sector and includes innovative performance features such as soil and stain resistant yarns, an impervious membrane and an anti-microbial yarn treatment – all of which assist with cleaning and infection control and help to improve the indoor air quality. *https://statistics.blf.org.uk/lung-disease-ukbig-picture Enquiries: To view the stunning collections and find out more visit www.danfloor.co.uk and request your free sample material.

First project set for an early finish CARE home construction company Goldfinch Developments’ first project with Glenholme Group is scheduled to finish over six weeks early. Goldfinch was appointed to carry out the £5.2m build on the Glenholme Healthcare site in Sleaford, Lincolnshire after sourcing the land and giving early detailed advice on build-ability, budget, design and specification last April. Now, the 64-bed home, which has the potential for a further 20 assisted living apartments, is looking to complete nearly two months ahead of schedule. The show suite, with five bedrooms and associated rooms will also open to the general public in the near future. The nursing and dementia home when opened will provide a spacious, luxurious and sociable environment where family members are encouraged to spend time in the home, participate in activities and spend time with their loved ones. Facilities at the home will include; a cinema, hairdressers, bar and café. Each bedroom will have an en-suite bathroom and a perimeter corridor outside every bedroom, giving direct views and access into an extensively landscaped courtyard.

much earlier than anticipated. “We are delighted with this achievement as it reflects our excellent relationship with Glenholme Healthcare and DWA Architects.” Kevin added: “We are not just a building contractor who will tender for a care home and build it, we are dedicated care sector professionals who will engage with clients from the very start of a development idea, share our knowledge and guide them through the complex process that ultimately results in a cost effective, state-of-the-art new care home. Glenholme appreciate this and we look forward to continued success with them.” Kent Phippen, group CEO and managing director of Glenholme Group, said: “We had prior experience of working with the Goldfinch senior team, so we had no doubts about awarding this contract to them. “The project has gone very smoothly and is well ahead of schedule, and we see this as the beginning of an ongoing relationship. Goldfinch has already introduced us to four potential new sites and we are working together to take these forward.” Glenholme Holdingham Grange is scheduled to open its doors to its first residents in the summer.

Contractor appointed for home
PLANS for a £9m dementia home in Kingston are a step closer after the council awarded Willmott Dixon Construction Ltd the design and build contract for a new specialist facility in the borough. The care home for older people is set to open by 2020 and will be built on the current Newent Home site in Surbiton. Subject to consultation and planning approval, the 80-bed facility will be owned by the council and run by an independent operating company which will deliver nursing and care services in the home. Works on the site are due to start this winter subject to planning permission being granted. The new purpose-built residential home will help provide care for the increasing number of older people with dementia in the borough as well as generate income for the council from those residents who are able to fund their own care. Roger Forsdyke, managing director of Willmott Dixon in South London and Southern Home Counties, said: “We are delighted to be working with Kingston Council to create their new dementia home. “We have vast experience working in this sector and look forward to using our skills to create this specialist facility.”
The Government is unprepared to deal with immigration changes after Brexit claims new report By Kashif Majeed FAILURE to set out detailed plans for the registration and transition period soon will make it impossible for the already overstretched UK Visas and Immigration, Border Force and Immigration Enforcement to do their job properly. The Government is chronically underprepared to deal with immigration changes after Brexit, is responsible for “unacceptable” delays in setting out its plans, and continues to starve key border agencies of resources, according to a damning report from a parliamentary committee. The influential Home Affairs Committee called ministers’ failure to outline their plans for post-Brexit immigration “extremely regrettable” and said it means over-stretched authorities are being left with “barely any time to recruit or plan” for Britain leaving the European Union (EU). As a result, key changes could be rushed through without proper parliamentary scrutiny, and border security compromised, the MPs warned. A white paper laying out the proposals was initially due to be
Take Control of Your Cashflow
Kashif Majeed published last summer, but was then pushed back to the end of last year. It was delayed again earlier in February, with ministers telling MPs the paper will be released “when the time is right”. Amber Rudd, the Home Secretary, would only say it was “likely” to be published by the end of the 2018. Labour MP Yvette Cooper, chair of the committee, said: “Government drift is putting everyone in an impossible position. Decisions and announcements keep being delayed. “Crucial details are still lacking. There aren’t enough resources and staff in place. Our inquiry found that the immigration and border system is already understaffed with significant problems and it will not cope with last-minute and under-resourced Brexit changes.
“The lack of detail with just over a year to go is irresponsible. We recognise that the Government needs time to consider long term changes, but the Home Office urgently needs to set out its intentions for next year.” A Home Office spokeswoman said: “It is ridiculous to suggest that we are not preparing sufficiently for leaving the EU.” They also claimed that: “It is precisely for this reason that we have already invested £60m in 2017-18, are planning to recruit an additional 1,500 staff across the immigration, borders and citizenship system and are well advanced in the development of a new scheme to give EU citizens currently here the right to stay after Brexit. We will keep staffing under review as negotiations progress, but will always ensure we have the resources and workforce we need to run an effective system.” There seems to be a long delays in implementing a robust system to deal with post-Brexit and the Government has recently been widely criticised in its handling of the change. However, only time will tell whether the new system will work or failure is a real possibility. n Kashi Majeed is a director at Aston Brooke Solicitors.
A new care home development in Lichfield celebrated a major milestone with a topping out ceremony. The occasion marked the completion of the latest stage of the 70-bed care home where the final tile was laid. The new home, aptly named after the three spires on Lichfield’s famous Cathedral is being built by McGoff Construction Ltd. The Spires, owned and operated by Barchester Healthcare, will provide residential and dementia care for older people in the neighbouring community and will open its doors to residents this summer. The new home will feature an in-house hair salon, bistro area, and Wi-Fi will be available in all parts of the home. Not far from the city centre, the view from the upstairs balcony looks out across woodland and surrounding farmland.

Windsor care home celebrates ‘Outstanding’ rating from CQC A WINDSOR care home has been rated ‘outstanding’ by the CQC following an inspection into the quality of service it provides. Sandown Park, which is part of the Healthcare Homes group, was inspected in January and has now received this highly positive grading. Inspectors visited the facility in an unannounced visit and spent time speaking with staff, residents, the relatives of residents and the registered manager. They looked to determine whether the service delivered at the home was safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. The home was rated as ‘outstanding’ in three of the five areas. The report found the level of care at the home to be outstanding and noted that staff “formed compassionate relationships with people and supported family members of people who were connected with Sandown Park Care

Our commitment to continuously finding new and creative ways to engage and stimulate our residents is evidence of this. “We will never stop trying to improve our service, and will always welcome feedback from residents, relatives and inspectors at all times so that we can build on our good work.” The positive comments made within the report are also reflected on the independent care home review website www.carehome.co.uk where the home is currently rated as 9.3 out of 10.

Home breaks fundraising record A WILTSHIRE-based national charity that transforms the lives of NHS hospital patients with spinal injuries has received a cash boost from a Salisbury nursing home. Residents and team members at Colten Care’s Braemar Lodge set an in-house record when they raised nearly £2,830 for Horatio’s Garden. Their campaign saw contributions collected at a summer garden party, Christmas market, pub quiz and various raffles. Residents even made and sold items from arts and crafts sessions including greeting cards, paintings and other gift ideas. Residents Dorothy Noyce, 103,
and Dora Williams, 91, handed over a cheque for £2,829.85 to Horatio’s Garden representatives at a presentation ceremony. Jackie Cash, clinical lead at Braemar Lodge, said: “We have great affinity with what Horatio’s Garden is all about. “Like them, we make sure our own garden is wheelchair friendly and an inspiring space to explore and enjoy whatever the season. We actively involve many of our residents in gentle gardening activities which they love.” Braemar Lodge has chosen Salisbury Hospital League of Friends as its charity for 2018.

A NATIONAL skills organisation has thrown its weight behind a campaign led by Lancashire care home network Springhill Care Group to highlight the growing skills shortages facing the care sector. Sharon Allen, chief executive of Skills for Care, has come out in support of the Caring Heroes campaign which was launched by the Accrington-based company to help raise awareness of the lack of skills and the way care sector employees are undervalued. Skills for Care supports adult social care employers to deliver its services through the development of learning initiatives and workforce development for the sector’s workforce including qualifications at all levels. Sharon recently took part in a parliamentary public accounts committee debate to discuss the future direction of adult social care in response to a National Audit office report on the social care workforce. She told the panel: “It’s a national shame that we only pay the workforce a National Minimum Wage. “The social care and healthcare workforce should have parity in all ways including pay but also terms and conditions, and then we need funds to run a national recruitment campaign. “The lack of pay in the care sector is also associated with a lack of skills when in fact it is a highly-skilled industry. Social care at its best transforms lives.” The Caring Heroes campaign won the backing of industry leaders including Martin Green, chief

executive of Care England and Alex Ramamurthy, CEO of the Care Workers Charity, along with MPs Graham Jones of Hyndburn and Rosie Cooper of West Lancs. Donna Briggs, managing director of Springhill Care Group, which has three homes in Accrington, Skelmersdale and Bristol, said: “We watch developments with great interest and the whole sector is now galvanising itself to ensure we are in a better position to provide the services being demanded from a growing ageing population.” A Green Paper on the future of adult social care with recommendations for new funding is expected before the summer recess of Parliament. Springhill Care Group submitted written evidence to the public accounts committee setting out a case for increased awareness of career opportunities within the care sector, how a more joined-up NHS and social care network would reduce hospital admissions and the need for increased funding for workforce development. Often the illegal practice of wedging fire doors open is used to negate this issue, putting lives at risk. Care home managers could be fined or imprisoned for doing so. Provider in pledge to raise £100k for charities
AWARD-winning care provider Hallmark Care Homes is joining forces with Alzheimer’s Research UK and The Care Workers Charity this year in an effort to defeat dementia and ensure no care worker will ever face financial hardship alone. Employees and residents from Hallmark’s 17 homes and Central Support Office are embarking on fundraising activities for the two causes, with the aim of raising £50,000 for each life-changin g charity. The amount will help Alzheimer’s Research UK to fuel dementia research, while The Care Workers Charity will use the money to provide financial support to current, former and retired care workers who have fallen on hard times. Fundraising activities include sporting events, raffles, bake sales, non-uniform days and a luxury, live auction event. Managing director Avnish Goyal said: “We are absolutely delighted to be fundraising for these two important charities and to be Alzheimer’s Research UK’s first national care fundraising partner. “As we care for residents living with dementia, we have seen first-hand the devastating effects it can have on an individual and their loved ones, which is why we wholly support Alzheimer’s Research UK’s mission to bring about the first life-changin g dementia treatment by 2025.”

Supporting people with dementia: a framework of expertise By Jo Blackburn THE Orders of St John Care Trust has a long history of providing care and support. We now support more than 3,500 residents in 72 care homes, alongside our domiciliary service in 16 extra care housing schemes, across Lincolnshire, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire. As part of our continuous mission to provide high-quality person-centred care, we have a strong focus on delivering specialist support to people living with dementia. To consolidate our existing expertise in this area, we recently launched a Dementia Care Framework, to provide outstanding guidance for all OSJCT employees. The Framework draws on our frontline experience, as well as published best practice and input from colleagues, volunteers, families and collaborating partners. It also recognises sector-specific standards and frameworks, such as the National Dementia Declaration and the NICE Dementia Quality Standards. Our Dementia Care Framework details how all employees can best support people living with dementia, as well as their families and carers. How we created the framework To develop the framework, we reviewed best practice guidance, existing competency frameworks and models of dementia care. The Trust made links with wider Dementia UK work programmes, and we consulted with residents, their families and friends, people living with dementia and their carers who attend our Memory Cafes, employees and colleagues working in health and
Jo Blackburn social care on their views, experiences and expertise. We looked at the differing needs of a person living with dementia, their family and carers, and identified four stages of the ‘dementia journey’. These are: n Keeping well, prevention, and a dementia diagnosis. n Living well. n Living well with increasing help and support. n End of life and dying well. What the framework says The framework details our current dementia service provision and our aspirations around new ways of working to ensure we enable people living with dementia and their families to maximise their rights, choices and health and wellbeing. Fundamentally, our aim is to make sure all colleagues have a good understanding of what it’s like to live with dementia. Our framework details
Shackletons creates comforting care environments with bespoke, handmade furniture designs for the UK’s care homes. Sarah Thompson, national sales manager, discusses how her team used a new home’s natural surroundings to create a truly unique interiors offering.
Bringing the outdoors in WHEN a care provider approaches us to consult on a new build care home, our bespoke methodology kicks in. This was certainly the case when the Fisher Care Group came to us ahead of the construction of Bridge House Care Home, a 66-bed care home featuring a hair salon, indoor garden, games room, music room and café, in Brighouse, West Yorkshire. One of the things we pride ourselves on is the bespoke tailored finish we use to capture each home’s individuality. With more than 50 years’ experience in creating furniture and interior packages for the care sector, we understand the importance of creating a homely feel and family environment that meets the specialist needs of elderly residents.
As the inspiration for this build stemmed from the 200-year-old protected woodland that surrounded the site and the design of the home included panoramic windows and viewing balconies to allow residents to appreciate the stunning scenery, we knew this would be important when creating furniture for the home’s residents. We were closely involved with the design process, working alongside operations director Jenny Fisher to get under the skin of the care home’s requirements and how our furniture would work with the home’s design features to work with its surroundings. To complement the high specification build, we developed high quality furniture that would enable the home’s residents to make the most of the space and facilities.
the knowledge and skills colleagues should aspire to achieve in their role of supporting people living with dementia and their families. The framework is concerned with levels of expertise, specific to the individual’s role and responsibilities relative to working with people living with dementia, rather than their seniority within the organisation or their profession. We have constructed the learning and development programme in an incremental way, building on knowledge and skills, attitudes and behaviours. The programme starts with the baseline knowledge and skills required by all colleagues and beyond that employees work with their line managers to create personal development plans, which ensure they apply the framework to their role. One aspect of our Dementia Care Framework that we are particularly proud of is our Admiral Nursing Service, which we developed for our care homes in collaboration with Dementia UK. As registered nurses that specialise in dementia care, Admiral Nurses give expert practical, clinical and emotional support to OSJCT employees, and families and carers supporting and caring for those living with dementia. We also have two Admiral Nurses who outreach into the community and work alongside people living with dementia, and their families: giving them one-to-one support, expert guidance and practical solutions. The unique dementia expertise and experience an Admiral Nurse brings helps families to live more positively with dementia. Our dementia cafés also help carers to
meet each other and provide a safe haven to access advice and support in the community. Carers tell us that with our support they can face the challenges of the future with more confidence and less fear, in particular the transition from home to care home. Aspirations being achieved We have already put into place aspirations established in the Dementia Care Framework. We now have a head of dementia care in four of our specialist dementia care homes. They make sure all household employees are confident to meet the care needs of residents. Our heads of dementia care are responsible for creating a culture of inclusion, where social and occupational activities are designed to enhance, stimulate, develop and maintain the highest quality of life and enjoyment for residents. We have also developed a new accreditation, which has been endorsed by Dementia UK. Our Wellbeing and Dementia accreditation is based around each of the six senses, on the basis that in an enriched environment, residents, their families and carers experience all six senses. We would recommend this cohesive and person-centered approach to anyone looking after those living with dementia. The benefits of the Dementia Care Framework have been clear to see. Our residents are reaping the benefits and our employees feel more supported and empowered to give people living with dementia the best possible care. n Jo Blackburn is care director at The Orders of St John Care Trust.
A corridor and lounge area at a St Helens care home has been transformed with an area full of artwork. The Living Art Gallery at Stocks Hall has been developed to showcase a collection of art pieces that have been created by residents. The exhibition features 11 pieces of work that explore still life paintings using paint, pastels and collage. Laura CoghlanAdam, activities staff and in-house artist, said: “This is a wonderful celebration of inspiration and diversity through the art and craft sessions held at the home, bringing an array of benefits to the people wishing to be involved.”
