Free to enter awards need your entries OPERATORS wanting to put themselves forward for industry recognition have been urged to enter the 2022 Caring UK Awards. Nominations for this year’s event close on August 26, meaning there’s just over three months for care operators to submit their entries. The awards, organised by Script Events in partnership with Caring UK and headline sponsor Virgin Money, recognise excellence and achievement in all corners of the care industry. And with more than 20 categories up for grabs, there’s something to suit every type of care business and care worker. Publishing manager Dominic Musgrave said: “Thanks to everyone who has entered the awards already – we’ve had a great response so far with nominations arriving daily. “And the standard is outstanding with a great mix of operators of all sizes – many familiar names and lots of newcomers to the Caring UK Awards. “We’re extremely proud that the Caring UK Awards are for every care business – our awards are free to enter and our judging criteria means that it’s not down to the size of your home but how you run it.
“There’s still time to enter so get working on your nomination – and one of our judging panel could be visiting you very soon.” Trophies will be handed out at a glittering ‘Festive and Fabulous’ themed ceremony on Thursday December 1 at the Athena in Leicester where the industry’s best will gather for a fun filled night and our 2022 worthy winners will be revealed. The event will be presented by Emmerdale actor Dean Andrews and judges will be revealed in due course. Plans are already in progress to make it the biggest and best Caring UK Awards yet. Event organiser Megan Prince added: “I can’t wait for this year’s Caring UK Awards. “We’re aiming for it to be bigger and better than any other year and plans are already well underway. “The level of dedication towards the industry shown through nominations we have received so far is really uplifting.” n Nominations can be submitted via caringukawards. co.uk where you can also find more details of this year’s categories and criteria for entering. An entry form is also printed in this magazine on pages 15 and 16. Closing date for nominations is August 26.
Shops boost residents’ wellbeing
With 25 classic cars attending, and over £220 raised for NSPCC Childline, the first ‘coffee and cakes’ classic car event hosted at Castle View, Windsor has been hailed a success by organisers. Tying in with the national Drive-It Day, a broad range of classic vehicles arrived during the day, and included a very rare Chrysler DeSoto Firesweep, an Aston Martin DBS, a Standard 10, Morris Minor Countryman and three Willys Jeeps. Participants travelled from West London, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Surrey to join in, and an array of cakes were baked and sold along with tea and coffee by residents. A FAMILY-owned Beccles care home has built a dementiafriendly shopping lane to boost the wellbeing of its residents. Wellbeing Care’s St George’s launched the shopping lane initiative following the success of its recent implementation at its Lowestoft sister home, The Dell. Registered manager Joy Henshaw said: “The initiative has already proven successful, as residents have reported feeling more independent. It is clear that the shopping lane provides a higher sense of self purpose, subsequently improving residents’ confidence and self-esteem. “The shopping lane facilitates social gatherings, as residents can now arrange to meet up with friends, fellow residents or family members in a secure, controlled environment. “We hope the increased social activity will help combat resident loneliness, which has been heightened nationally due to the recent lockdowns and restrictions.” Noticing a significant improvement in resident wellbeing since its opening in early 2022, the management staff at Wellbeing Care decided to additionally create the nostalgic shopping lane at St George’s to enhance wellbeing and evoke higher levels of happiness among residents. Inspired by key elements of the high street, it comprises a fresh flower shop, a mini grocery store and telephone booth, alongside a coffee area in the dining room.

It’s all suds and laughter as duo entertain care homes’ residents WHEN a pair of window cleaners visited Balhousie Care homes it wasn’t just the windows that were left sparkling. “Buff and Sheen” arrived in Dundee in a flurry of colour, dance, music, suds and slapstick, entertaining care home residents and leaving behind nothing but big smiles and laughter. The award-winning performance duo, accompanied by their sidekick “Dazzle”, visited Balhousie Clement Park and Balhousie St. Ronan’s in Dundee, where staff members’ children and grandchildren joined in the fun. They then headed to Balhousie Moyness in Broughty Ferry where they were joined by children from a local nursery. The result was a day of intergenerational activity that benefited both residents and local children. Balhousie Care Group’s brand and communications manager Gillian Drummond said: “We loved this idea from the off. “Not only does it re-ignite and develop important community links, particularly post-lockdown, but it also provides invaluable intergenerational connections and stimulation and cognitive benefits for our residents. Balhousie is excited to be partnering with MoonSlide to bring the highly inventive Buff and Sheen to

residents and school and nursery children, their slapstick fun and games are viewed through a window, reaching people up close whilst keeping everyone safe inside. And the windows get cleaned too. Balhousie Care Group is the only care home provider to be officially partnering with Moonslide on their tour.

Residents use VR to relive memories
Bee project brings residents and scout group together RESIDENTS at Signature at Camberley have come together with the Beavers of Bramshill Scouts to support them with their new bee sanctuary project. The Scout Beavers were invited to the care home so that they could learn and receive support from the numerous gardening experts at Signature at Camberley, eager to pass on their knowledge and help the group with their project. Over two sessions a total of 14 residents and 30 Beavers came together to seed and pot natural plants and flowers and paint rocks, which were then taken back to their gardens.
Lia Thompson, activities coordinator at Signature at Camberley, said: “Having the Beavers come in to see the residents was a great experience. “The interaction between the age groups was very friendly and caring. It’s so important to maintain these relationships with our local community and we hope to endeavour more in the future.” The two sessions were a huge success, and as a thank you for their support, the Beavers have since invited the residents down to their gardens this summer to enjoy a cream tea party and see the results of their collective bee sanctuary efforts.
RESIDENTS from Mon Choisy and Kirlena House care homes in Kennington, Oxfordshire are taking virtual walks and trips as part of their reminiscence sessions, stimulating their memories and sense, all from the comfort of the living room. The residents are able to relive hobbies and visit sentimental locations, such as the Devon coast, with the use of virtual reality, providing them with experiences similar to the real world. Auditcare’s registered manager Magdalena Liskiewicz said: “Introducing physiotherapy VR sessions at Mon Choisy and Kirlena House has been simply life-changing to many of our residents. ”They have thoroughly enjoyed what the weekly sessions bring, allowing them to do new things they wouldn’t be able to take part in normally. “These include climbing hills in the countryside or exploring the beautiful Devonshire beaches and caves. All within the home’s living room. It’s truly remarkable. “As a dementia specialist care home provider we embrace the latest technology and are so proud to be able to offer these services to our residents to fight memory loss and ensure they have the best quality of life possible.” Auditcare, a dementia specialist care home provider, arranged for a
Resident Joy Jennings using the VR headset. physiotherapist to attend the two homes for the weekly VR sessions. A VR headset and foot machine took each resident on a journey of sensory experience. Once the headset is on, residents are able to enter caves on the Devonshire coast and walk around Oxford city centre, surrounded by happy people and nature. The latest advanced session allowed the residents to experience climbing hills using the foot machine. Pressing up and down on the machine while wearing the headset stimulates a realistic feeling through touch. The virtual reality reminiscence sessions trigger special memories for dementia residents, as well as supporting physical activity.

Rugby fanatic Jack inducted in hall of fame
Home’s Jubilee plans receive the ‘royal seal of approval’ SIGNATURE at Eastbourne received a note from the Queen after the care home shared its planned activities to mark her Platinum Jubilee. The home’s activities coordinator Sara Connor wrote to Her Majesty to inform her of the events they had planned to mark the special occasion, including a street party in June. Residents and team members received a response from her. She expressed her gratitude for their kind words to celebrate her 70 years since her ascension to the throne. Sara said: “We are all genuinely
astonished that HRH has responded to our letter as, despite our eagerness, we were all fully aware the Queen has many responsibilities. It has definitely been an unexpected source of delight for all of us.” Residents and colleagues are so thrilled with the Royal response that the note and letter is framed in the home’s front room. Also enclosed was a response letter on behalf of the Queen from the lady-in-waiting reiterating HRH’s joy in receiving the home’s celebratory letter.

ST JOHN’S care home resident Jack Dun has received an honours cap from Melrose Rugby Club after he attended his 80th Sevens tournament. Jack was inducted into the Melrose Sevens’ hall of fame to celebrate the milestone in a competition he started attending in 1934. Of a possible 82 tournaments, the Mansfield Care resident missed only two while he was serving with the British Army in India in 1947 and 1948. President of the Melrose Rugby Club in 1983 – marking the centenary year of the Sevens competition – Jack was presented with his cap by former Scotland and British and Irish Lions player John Jeffrey during the honours presentation with his grandson Matthew. Jack said: “It came as a total shock to be inducted into the hall of fame, but a surprise I am absolutely thrilled about. “Melrose Sevens has played such an important role in my life and is the bedrock of bringing the local community together. “I am extremely grateful for this tremendous honour the rugby club has bestowed on me.” Jack started going to the Melrose Sevens tournament at the age of eight, when he was introduced to the event by his mother who took him to watch the final from the Weirhill just in front of the church in 1934. After playing in the tournament for a number of years, and racking up 176 appearances for the first 15, Jack joined the ranks of match officials, and was later on the Scottish Rugby Union’s referee selection panel for many years. The hall of famer has seen many players grace the turf at The Greenyards, but believes one particular player shone brighter than
Jack Dun with his cap. most. Jack added: “The greatest player I recall was the magnificent Eddie Oxley. He should have been the first black player to be capped by Scotland, but society at the time prevented this from happening. “He was terrific, and a natural leader, he played when I was a young boy and seeing him on the pitch certainly inspired me to get involved in the sport. “One of the best players I’ve had the privilege of seeing.” The Melrose Rugby Sevens is the oldest competition of its type in the world dating back to its inaugural tournament in 1883. St John’s care home manager Alison Grant added: “This is a tremendous accolade for Jack, he has always talked about his enthusiasm for the Melrose Sevens, and for him to receive hall of fame status is a momentous occasion for him.”

SONYA Fenwick, general manager at Signature at Coombe Hill Manor, will soon be pounding the pavement to raise vital funds for Breast Cancer Research. She will be joined by eight friends and members of her family on a 13-mile night-time walk through the city of London on September 24. Passing some of the city’s most famous landmarks, including Tower Bridge, St Paul’s Cathedral, the London Eye and Buckingham Palace, the walk is set to be a tough but worthwhile test for all involved. Sonya said: “I’m on a journey to live more healthily, and walking has become part of what I do. Being able to raise funds for such an amazing cause and at the same time celebrate my personal journey to healthy living is a win-win for me. “I’ve never done anything like this before and really appreciate any support you can give. My husband will be walking with me, and I am determined to get him in a pink flashing bra.” Her inspiration for taking on this challenge stems from two poignant moments in her life. Last year, due to medical reasons, she was required to have weightrelated surgery. Whilst this in itself was a life-changing moment, it was the stark message she received from doctors after the procedure that has been her driving force. After being told that changes were essential if she was to remain healthy, Sonya began exploring her options and potential lifestyle adjustments she could make. It was soon after this point she came across the Ramblers, a charity group of people and groups who come together to enjoy walking. After learning more about the organisation and their routes across
Britain, Sonya decided it would be a great idea if she started her own Ramblers division amongst friends and family. Since this point she has not looked back. Over the last year Sonya has led numerous walks with friends and family, including some of her colleagues at Signature at Coombe Hill Manor. For Sonya, the ‘Shine Night Walk’ represents yet another milestone on her health journey. Nevertheless, Sonya’s primary motivation for undertaking this walk are the several inspirational women in her life affected by cancer. From her sister-in-law’s friend who remained positive throughout chemotherapy, to her niece who underwent a double mastectomy, their determination and drive was a big inspiration for Sonya and played a big part in her decision to take on this challenge.

A Cassington care home has employed a qualified driver who will taxi staff to and from their shifts. Churchfields has made the decision to enable employees to save money on rising transport costs which are currently crippling the nation. Manager Steph Eley said: “The cost of living has increased so quickly at such a dramatic level that it has really been a shock to a lot of people, and the last thing we want to do is put our amazing team members at Churchfields under more pressure. There is lots of talk at the moment in the media about the impact on home care workers, which is undeniable, but people don’t seem to be talking about the impact on those who commute for work, especially if they have to cover a large distance.” Those using the bus, which will be driven by Barry Acock, will meet at a central point in Witney.

CARINGNEWS Advertiser’s announcement
Is your building fire safety compliant? THERE is still a massive lack of understanding as to what passive fire protection is and who can complete this type of work. Most people are familiar with active fire protection such as fire alarms, smoke detectors, emergency escape lighting, sprinkler systems and fire extinguishers to name a few. These require some amount of action or motion in order to be activated. Passive fire protection, in comparison, maximises the time available to evacuate a property by utilising integrated components such as fire doors, fire rated walls and floors throughout the building. These components prevent the spread of smoke and fire by compartmentalising your building into smaller sections. The most obvious form of passive fire protection is a fire door. Throughout its life a fire door may only be called upon to act as an access door but, in the event of a fire, it will fulfil a life-saving role. A correctly installed and maintained fire door will protect users of the building who may have difficulty evacuating quickly, protect evacuation routes, provide the emergency services with a protected route to access the building and reduce the damage caused by fire and smoke. Unfortunately, it is very common to find that these compartments have been compromised as a result of new services installed through compartment walls & floors and as a result of damaged, poorly installed & maintained fire rated doors. We are often asked “Can I do the repair/ maintenance work myself?” or “Can my builder or joiner complete these repair/maintenance works?” Whilst currently possible, it is inadvisable. In practice a non-specialist contractor tends to install passive fire protection incorrectly (despite
best intentions – it is important that the repairs completed can be backed up by manufacturers’ technical assessments and many building contractors are unaware of this). An incorrect installation can also be flagged as inadequate during a fire risk assessment or fire authority inspection – necessitating replacement – and may not satisfy insurers who increasingly are asking for certification that show any works have been completed by a third-party accredited installer. UK Passive Fire Solutions hold third party accreditation with International Fire Consultants and are regularly audited to ensure we employ
appropriate trained and competent staff, processes and procedures and only use suitable materials. We are also proud to be members of the Association for Specialist Fire Protection. UK Passive Fire Solutions work with you from start to finish. Call or email today to get more information and receive an information pack. Email info@ukpassivefiresolutions.co.uk or call 01262 469872. We are looking forward to attending several of this year’s Caring UK conferences and would welcome the opportunity to meet you to discuss your needs and answer your questions. We look forward to meeting you.

CARINGNEWS Caer Gwent resident Brenda Templeton marked her centenary with an afternoon tea prepared by catering staff at the care home with her daughterin-law Yoriko and a long-time friend who visited from Jersey Shoreham born Brenda describes herself as a ‘local yokel’ – she spent her childhood at Queen’s Boarding School before later moving to Australia for six months. At the start of the Second World War she joined the RAF and worked as secretary to the commanding officer of Squadron 544, based in Benson, Oxfordshire. It was during the war that she met and married her husband Frank, who was a pilot flying Mosquito aircrafts. Brenda’s biggest hobby was playing and watching lawn bowls – she would often spend her days at Worthing Pavilion having a game with her friends.
An Encore Care Homes resident has danced her way into the ‘Hamble Heights Hundred Club’ as she celebrated her milestone 100th birthday. Joan Mackenzie became the first member of this year’s ‘Hamble Heights Hundred Club.’ She enjoyed dancing to a live musician with her fellow friends at the care home with a backdrop of a huge ‘Happy 100th birthday’ banner, followed by tea and cake with her son Stuart and daughter Gill. Joan lived in her own home until she turned 99 when her family decided that she deserved to put her feet up and receive some TLC from the Hamble Heights team. A VIP visitor made Derrick Corfield’s 95th birthday extra special when the World War Two veteran celebrated his milestone at Broughton House Veteran Care Village in Salford. Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett was touring the new facilities at the care home and made sure he was able to wish widower Derrick a happy birthday in person. The Mayor was accompanied on his trip by Joanne Farrell, head of the City Mayor’s office and Salford Council’s armed forces lead officer. Derrick’s memorable celebrations included a visit from his family, and the home marked the special occasion with a party for residents and staff and a screening of one of his all-time favourite movies, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Derrick moved into Broughton House last summer after toppling from his electric scooter and breaking an ankle.
A resident at a Gateshead care home has celebrated her 107th birthday. Jean Slater, who marked the milestone birthday with family and friends at Craigielea, received a card from the Queen to commemorate the occasion. Jean, whose maiden name was Wallace, was born in Gateshead and has lived in the area all her life. She married her husband Billy, who died 30 years ago, in 1940, and a year later they had a son, Graham. Jean’s is a close-knit family, and she enjoys regular visits with her son and his wife Janet and her grandson Johnathon and his wife Urmita. Jean worked at the Thompson Red Stamp store in Gateshead, which took its name from the fact it gave customers red stamps to save when they shopped there. Vera Crisp, a resident at Care South’s Fremington Manor care home in Barnstaple, Devon celebrated her 106th birthday recently surrounded by family, friends, and fellow residents. Appledore Band provided the entertainment, while Vera enjoyed her favourite meal of fish and chips and also had a slice of cake and a cup of tea while residents and staff sang happy birthday. Activities lead Dawn Berry said: “Vera turning 106 is a remarkable feat and we were delighted to help her mark this extraordinary day with a special party just for her. Our job is to help support and nurture our residents to help them keep living fulfilled lives and it was wonderful for Vera to be able to celebrate her special birthday with family, friends and residents. All our staff work hard to ensure our residents’ birthdays are truly memorable occasions.”
May “Bunty” Pitman, a resident at Speedwell Court residential care home in Southampton, recently celebrated her 104th birthday. In her long life, Bunty has been blessed with two daughters, three grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren, and enjoyed a happy marriage to John “Jack” Pitman. Having already had a big party for her 100th birthday with all her family, Bunty celebrated her 104th birthday in typical low-key style at Speedwell Court, a care home managed by The Abbeyfield Society. The home is the third Abbeyfield property in which she has lived, having previously been a resident at Roundhay and Castle Gate sheltered housing schemes in Guildford, before moving to Speedwell Court in 2019.
Signature at Banstead resident Joe Bell celebrated his 90th birthday in style with the help of his favourite classic car. Fulfilling a long-held dream, Joe was given the perfect present when he was surprised with a chauffeur to take him on a scenic drive to the RAC club in Epsom in a Jaguar XK120. It paid homage to a long relationship Joe has enjoyed with Jaguar where he took an apprenticeship at the age of 14. His career at Jaguar continued, where he eventually progressed to running a garage in Exeter. As part of his birthday celebration he later returned to the care home where he lives with his wife Dorothy to continue celebrations over lunch and a champagne party with the help of friends and family. A resident at a Cassington care home was treated to a horse and carriage ride for her birthday. Staff at the Churchfields arranged this in honour of Beryl Silwowski 101st birthday after she wished to go horseback riding on Dignity Action Day earlier this year. Activities coordinator Karen Woolford said: “In her younger years Beryl was an avid horse rider and several times expressed an interest to the Churchfields team that she was longing to be back on a horse again. The team were able to grant this wish as part of Dignity Action Day and as a celebration of Beryl’s 101st birthday, which is incredible in itself.” Beryl’s daughter Nina Russel and family were so pleased to see that Beryl’s lifetime wish had been granted.

Talented companion Sam makes BBC Radio 1 debut
Caron receives chief nurse’s adult social care gold award CANFORD Healthcare operations manager Caron Sanders-Crook has been awarded the chief nursing officer for adult social care gold award in recognition of her outstanding services to social care. Caron, who last year became a Queen’s nurse, received her certificate in person from professor Deborah Sturdy, the chief nurse for adult social care, at Willows Care Home in Romford. She said: “This is an amazing honour in recognition of my contribution to nursing and social care. I am so pleased and proud to have been recognised with this prestigious award. “I love nursing – I am actually in love with nursing, and have been since I was a child. I have been privileged enough to contribute to so many aspects of health and social care, but connecting with people who use the services and their families is where the magic really happens. “I believe that this magic is what influences and brings about change.” Caron has worked for Canford Healthcare as an operations manager for six years, overseeing the managers and staff of four residential and nursing homes. She is well respected for the way she supports people to work together to deliver high-quality service, going above and beyond to provide her managers and staff with appropriate advice, encouraging others to find answers for themselves and supporting their decisions. As a Dare to Care champion, Caron has creative ideas on how to improve services and processes – each of her
homes has achieved a ‘Good’, with two receiving ‘Outstanding’ in the Responsive category. She is also a passionate ambassador for the Canford values and behaviours – everything she does is underpinned by compassionate care for those she works with. She delivers excellence at all times and supports others to do the same. Alongside her work within Canford Healthcare, Caron has many other professional commitments. She is a member of both the chief nursing officer-adult social care nursing and care advisory and the Covid-19 legacy social care groups, and took part in the (then) minister of state for social care – round table discussion with Helen Whately – women’s call for evidence in developing the first women’s health strategy for the UK. She is also the author of Amazon best-seller Behind The Smiles, a no-holds barred exploration of posttraumatic stress disorder and its impact on individuals and families, based on her personal experiences. Claudia Ramsamy, home manager of Willows Care Home, nominated Caron for the award. She added: “I am constantly amazed by her leadership skills and the breadth of her knowledge. I became manager of Willows at the start of the pandemic. As my mentor, Caron helped me to improve my management skills at a difficult time. “I believe her support was instrumental in helping me keep the home Covid free in the early days and making difficult decisions to facilitate that.”
A BRISTOL charity has become a real Living Wage employer and has increased wages to all of its 1,200 employees. As of the beginning of April all employees who work at Brunelcare will be paid at, or above, the real Living Wage of £9.90 per hour. The Government’s national living wage currently stands at £9.50 per hour. Becky Smith, care and support worker at Colliers Gardens, said: “It’s fantastic to feel appreciated in your
line of work, and the pay increase to the real Living Wage makes a real difference. With the cost of living forever increasing, this is going to make a huge difference.” The introduction of the real Living Wage at Brunelcare has seen all 1,072 employees receiving a pay increase of at least three per cent, alongside 762 of those employees receiving a further increase of 6.5 per cent, to get the charity’s lowest-paid employees to the rate of £9.90 per hour.

RESIDENTS at a Dorset care home have been tuning in to BBC Radio 1 to hear one of their talented carers hit the airwaves. Sam Hurst is a companion at Colten Care’s Newstone House in Sturminster Newton, where he regularly shares his love of music with residents. The 23-year-old is also one half of the musical duo BLVCK VIØLET and he and his band partner Harrison Walker have just been named finalists in Radio 1’s prestigious ‘Live Lounge Introducing’ competition, an annual, nationwide search to showcase the best, undiscovered bands. Sam and Harrison’s original song Lost Love was chosen from 10,000 entries as one of the top five songs in the competition and, while it wasn’t ultimately picked as the winner, it was played on the station’s breakfast show, to the delight of Newstone House residents. Sam said: “Hearing it played on the radio was unreal, immense. And we have since had lots of calls and messages about it from people all over, including the staff and residents at Newstone House. It’s been incredible.” Sam was of 18 new recruits to the group-wide companionship team at Colten Care recruited under an initiative to offer more support to residents during lockdown. He added: “I try to sing and play my guitar as much as I can at the home. Music is a big part of our residents’ lives and I alternate with sessions on our dementia floor one week, and another session on our residential floor the next.”
Sam with Newstone House resident Rita Clay listening to the track on one of the home’s Alexa devices. During lockdown Sam also wrote and recorded a light-hearted music video with some residents called ‘Hands, Face and Space’ demonstrating how to adhere to the Covid restrictions. Fiona Pritchard, Colten Care’s music and arts partner, said: “We are thrilled to have a such a charismatic and talented musician in our team. It is so important for residents to be able to access music and arts and having a professional performing regularly for them is wonderful.” Aside from their success on Radio 1, BLVCK VIØLET are currently through to the semi-finals of the Isle of Wight New Blood competition. If they win, they will be invited to perform at the Isle of Wight Festival.
Repaint scheme brightens up care village for tenants TENANTS at Bowthorpe Care Village in Norwich have been treated to a new nature-inspired mural thanks to environmentally conscious artist Freya Neighbour and national paint reuse network Community RePaint Cambridge. Freya was asked to create a mural that would serve as a backdrop for the care home’s activity space and a place that could inspire creative thinking and wellness. Emma-Marie Smith, deputy manager at The Meadows, said: “The mural that Freya created for us has turned our tenants’ activity room into an inspiring place where they can enjoy a calming and relaxing
environment and a chance to feel inspired by nature. “We’re delighted with the finished mural and love seeing how our tenants interact with it. It’s lovely to see them discovering new things each time they look at the piece and reminisce about the places they have visited. “The mural has not only brightened up the room, but also the lives of our tenants.” As part of a national paint reuse network, Community RePaint Cambridgeshire, which collects 62,000 litres of paint a year, offered Freya usable leftover paint at an affordable cost, perfect for the mural.

CARINGFALL PREVENTION / RESIDENT SAFETY AND WELLBEING
Advice for preventing falls in the elderly By Dr Lis Boulton AROUND a third of people aged over 65 years living in the community fall each year, with this number increasing to half of people aged 80+. Care home residents are three times more likely to fall than those living in their own homes, and two thirds of all falls will be experienced by women. Whilst most fall-related injuries are minor: bruising, strains, and sprains, for some people the impact of a fall can be catastrophic. Whilst some of us will recover quickly from a fall, many others will lose their confidence, mobility, independence or even their life. One in 10 falls result in injury, including fractures and head injuries. For hip fracture in particular, the short and long-term outlooks for people are generally poor, with 20 per cent of people dying within a year. Falls are recorded as a contributing factor in 40 per cent of care home admissions. Many who fall or experience a hip fracture need to go into residential care following an acute hospital admission. There are 10 times more hip fractures among older people living in care homes compared with older people living in other environments, and the cost of all hip fractures to the health and social care system is estimated at £2bn. Fear of falling is extremely common, can curtail physical activity and
activities of daily living and lead to social isolation – even within the care home environment. However, it’s important to recognise that falls are not an inevitable part of getting older and that much can be done to prevent falls, such as addressing issues that affect our strength and balance. Certain medications or combinations of medicines can make people feel faint or dizzy and affect their balance. Medication should be checked regularly, to check the dose or look at alternatives, especially if people experience side effects like these after taking any medication.
Eyesight changes as we age and can lead to a trip or loss of balance. Some eye conditions such as macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataracts increase with age, so older people should have their eyes and glasses checked regularly. Problems with the ears can severely affect balance. Older people should be encouraged to talk with their GP if they notice hearing changes are affecting their day-to-day living. The problem may be something easily treated, such as a build-up of ear wax or an ear infection. It’s also important to eat healthily and drink plenty of water. Getting enough energy is important in
keeping up strength and preventing falls. We also need to remember that it’s never too late to start exercises that can improve strength and balance. Practising standing up and sitting down from a chair, trying to make this movement as controlled as possible could be a good start. There is good evidence that strength and balance training works well for people living in care homes. Age UK has plenty of advice on preventing falls and how to get moving – safely – if you are not sure where to start. n Dr Lis Boulton is the health and care policy manager at Age UK.
Accessory delivers best value in home mobility prescription THE impact of stairs on people’s ability to be safely discharged from hospital or to continue to live independently in their homes is widely acknowledged: the need to address access between floors is one of the most common adaptations. The process can be significantly accelerated with purchase of just one accessory – AAT’s unique Universal Back. Fitted to any AAT S-Max stairclimber – which is Class 1 Medical device certified and already to hand in local authorities across the country – the Back can quickly ensure any user – young or old, large or small – can be safely transferred between floors. It means the home and its wider environment – be it a house or flat – is instantly made accessible without any physical alteration. There is no disruption to family life, whether from moving a bed downstairs for the recovery period nor the physical impact of installing larger, permanent fixtures (stairlift, through-floor lift). The potential for re-issue of equipment is extended. There is none of the financial or emotional cost of “making good”. For the recipient the Universal Back’s adjustable height and width supports provide stability and security even if they have asymmetry. Optional head rests, thoracic supports, thigh supports, chest harness, and posture cushions enable precise specification if needed, without impingement on the ability of the S-Max to be operated. For the care-giver the S-Max is easy to operate, even by a petite carer moving an obese adult. It can safely transfer any user up to 135kg/ 21st. The care-giver has complete control over the speed of climb or descent, and can even pause in mid-transfer if necessary.
New level-access shower tray for visual impairment users
A high centre of gravity delivers a feeling a security for the operator. Lightness of weight makes it easy to handle and manouevre. The battery pack can power up to 300 steps/charge and is easy to remove and recharge. When not in use, the stairclimber folds compactly away. As part of the offering, AAT supports healthcare professionals in assessment of the suitability of the equipment, sets it up for each user, and trains the care-giver in the S-Max’s safe operation. It can service the equipment whether in long-term use by the recipient or when returned to stores before re-issue. WITH the number of people in the UK living with sight loss on the rise, designing bathrooms that are easy to navigate is essential. That is why AKW is pleased to announce the launch of the Mullen shower tray, which creates a defined level-access showering area that is ideal for use by those with visual impairments. Stuart Reynolds, head of product and marketing at AKW, said: “The Mullen shower tray offers specifiers a cost-effective yet strong level-access showering solution that has been designed for those with visual impairments. “It is straightforward to install and offers a range of installation adaptation options, to meet the needs of any new or retrofit showering requirement.” Suitable for installation on either concrete or wooden flooring, this cost-effective shower tray offers unrivalled strength and stability and can support up to 30 stones (190kg) in weight. It can either be fitted as a level access solution, requiring only a 27mm floor recess for installation, or can be surface-mounted. For added safety, the tray is slip-resistant
and features a textured surface for added safety. With a 25mm fall inside the tray, there is also excellent water drainage. The Mullen shower tray comes with a unique Intergrip® clamping strip which grips and seals vinyl flooring in the tray, creating a watertight seal. Due to the flexibility of the clamping strip, flooring can also be fitted or changed after the tray and shower screen have been installed. It is also possible to maintain level-access showering when using floor tiles, and these fit under the clamping strip, with builtin tiling upstands ensuring the all-round integrity of the water seals. Ease of installation has also been a priority in the design of the AKW Mullen shower tray. Pre-formed fixing holes ensure a quick and easy install and the corner waste position on many options of the tray helps to avoid joist placement issues. The shower tray can also be mounted on screeded floors if required, with the addition of a trimmable ramp for easy access. CARINGFALL PREVENTION / RESIDENT SAFETY AND WELLBEING
Sophie uses her new role to bring community together
Friends of the Elderly, the charity which runs care homes, day care services and a grant giving service for older people living on low incomes, has continued to build on its commitment to its teams by expanding upon its Wellbeing Pledge and introducing a new online workplace mental health platform. Through engaging with the Unmind platform, the charity is empowering all its employees to proactively measure, understand and improve their mental wellbeing and see, first hand, how it can, and will, change over time. The outcomes and results of the collected – anonymous – data will help the management team to make more informed decisions about wellbeing of the charity’s workforce. The team at Unmind collaborates with clinicians, authors and academics to provide interactive digital tools that encourage and promote all aspects of mental wellbeing. From sleep to calmness, fulfilment to happiness, the platform can be accessed and used from any device at any time the member of staff needs it.
A NEWLY appointed ambassador for promoting relationships between all ages as part of everyday life has enlisted children and older people, to bring to life a historic story. Taking up her role as intergenerational practice lead for the not-for-profit dementia care specialist Belong, Sophie McKeon has spearheaded ‘Ribbons of Love’, a project devised by national charity Ready Generations. The aim is to foster connections and learning between people of all ages – an approach advocated by both organisations – in this instance, through the use of history and art. Whilst enduring hardship in the 18th century, thousands of mothers left their newborn infants in the care of London’s Foundling Hospital, providing only a bespoke ribbon as a way of identifying their offspring upon their return when they could afford to care for them. Today, a modern take has been used, with pupils of nurseries and schools in Chester and Crewe, and Belong’s residents all exchanging decorated ribbons, pictures and messages of love. Sophie said: “Ribbons of Love has been really well-received by our residents, who have loved getting creative, and imparting their wisdom and well-wishes to the children. “The feedback from the
AAT launches “game changing” concept in supported bathing FOR care home residents and staff, bath time can be more dignified, more hygienic, more therapeutic and safer, through a new invention. Aqua Liberty plugs the gap in enjoyable, supported bathing. Conceived and developed by AAT, Aqua Liberty is the first and only bath system that comfortably enables the bather to be properly and safely supported in the bath with minimal physical intervention from a carer. It means the bather can relax and enjoy the hygienic and therapeutic benefits of being immersed in water. It is the only system of its kind that can accommodate any bath and any user. Based around AAT’s innovative vacuum posture cushion and a non-slip mounting system, Aqua Liberty precisely forms to the bather irrespective of physical and/or neurological conditions, stabilising head, trunk and pelvis precisely and individually, and supporting them in the water. The system is based around AAT’s innovative vacuum posture cushions, which can be precisely, infinitely moulded to perfectly and comfortably support the occupant without pressure points or rigid structures. The Aqua Liberty is secured into place with integrated suction cups, so can be easily removed for other members of the household to use the bath. Using the Aqua Liberty system, the bather’s dignity, safety and wellbeing is improved. Intervention from care staff to support is minimised or eliminated. This enhances staff health and safety, reducing or removing any need to lean over the bath to weight-bear. It also means any involvement in the bathing process is made easier and safer. They stay drier during the bathing process. The system does more than just support
in the bath. It is multi-purpose. The advanced neoprene covering of the cushions provides further sensory positive stimulation, whilst being waterproof, and wipe clean to Covid-safe standards. After use in the bath, the cushions can be detached and air-dry quickly, enabling their use to deliver postural support wherever else may be required. New falls prevention app piloted in homes FOUR Cheshire care homes within the Maria Mallaband Care Group have been invited to pilot an innovative mobile app designed to prevent trips and falls. Hope Green Care Home and Carmel Lodge, both in Adlington, The Belvedere at Alderley Edge, and The Westbourne Care Home in Holmes Chapel are in the process of rolling out Safe Steps, an app co-designed with the NHS and Care Home Commissions with the aim of cutting falls in care homes. Regional director Robert Blackburn said: “Falls can come with devastating consequences. “Not only could they cause injury, potentially a serious one, but a fall can destroy someone’s confidence and their feeling of independence, resulting in isolation and anxiety. “Falls are not an inevitable part of aging – many are preventable – and we are totally committed to doing everything we can to make sure they don’t happen in our homes.” The new Safe Steps app guides a carer through a falls risk assessment to be done monthly on each resident, created following NICE guidelines, and the carer is provided with more than 50 possible evidence-based interventions to mitigate the potential risk of falls. There is also a dashboard feature
that describes in detail when and where falls are happening in the home, and actions being taken by staff to prevent these situations. While the assessment only takes three minutes per resident per month it has proved to be very effective – with figures from elsewhere in the country where the app is in use showing a 28 per cent reduction in falls in care homes. Safe Steps also offers information and training sessions which care home staff can access online. Kirsty Randall, regional director for The Westbourne Care Home, added: “The Westbourne is excited to be piloting the new Safe Steps initiative, working in partnership with Cheshire East Local authority. “We are always looking for ways to innovate and improve what we do, and this app is a fantastic tool to support both staff education and good practice. “Preventing trips and falls is something we take very seriously, and we already have strategies in place across our homes to reduce risk and keep people safe. “It means a lot to the home to be taking part in this pilot, enhancing the care we provide to those living within our home and developing relationships with the local authority.”

Until recently Altro has not approved any particular machine to clean their specialist flooring. So, after testing the Duplex machine we were very proud when Altro approved it for cleaning
and maintaining Altro slip-resistant floor coverings without the need for chemicals. From bedrooms, bathrooms, treatment and sluice rooms to kitchens, lounges and corridors, we can supply a solution to most floor cleaning needs and with a range of cleaning widths there is bound to be the ideal machine for whatever the size of your care home. All models are light to use and easy to manoeuvre around furniture and fixtures and are designed to clean right up to the edge, along skirting boards and into corners. Duplex also supplies a wide range of steam cleaning equipment to address multi surface cleaning and sanitising issues including tiles, toilets, bathrooms, kitchens and grouting plus soft surfaces such as curtains and upholstery. These machines tackle many cleaning tasks without the need to use chemicals making for a healthier, greener environment and providing cost saving benefits on expensive chemicals too. To demonstrate the efficacy of our products we have commissioned independent tests by the Hospital Infection Research Laboratory in Birmingham. We have certified data that proves our machines kill the bacterium most common in the environment including Clostridium Difficile. As a national company we offer free on site, no obligation demonstrations throughout the country carried out by our friendly and experienced team and if you decide to purchase we carry out a certificated training and installation session so that you can get the very best out of your Duplex machine.

The quick-dry layer draws fluids away from the skin, locking them away in the core of the product. The super stretchy leak proof cuffs
ensure that the pads shape to any individual and the fabric-back design is rustle-free and discreet. As an established supplier to UK care and nursing homes for more than 50 years you can be rest assured that any Gompels branded range like Suresy will deliver outstanding results that you would expect from world leading brands such as Tena, Lille and iD.
INSPECTORS have praised the “person-centred culture” and “dignity and respect” afforded to residents at an extra care development in Thatcham after a new management team was appointed to improve service delivery. The Care Quality Commission rated the Alice Bye scheme as ‘Good’ following an inspection of the site in January 2022. Upon reviewing the provision of care and speaking with employees and residents, the report praised the “experienced personalised care from a stable staff team” who “promoted people’s independence whilst ensuring they were safe”. Following the scheme’s last CQC report, which identified Alice Bye as requiring improvement, a new care manager and four new assistant care managers were appointed, with employees telling the inspector: “We now feel we are all working together to provide the best care we can, and our ideas and thoughts are encouraged.” Housing and care manager Katie Joyce said: “Although this process has been a great challenge for all of the team, we have now embedded a great service. “We are continuing to maintain the improvement here and our goal is to work hard towards outstanding.
The now stable and well experienced team take pride in ensuring that all of our residents are kept safe and looked after like they would look after their own family members. “We are organising many activities and events at the scheme which will benefit the residents’ wellbeing and reduce the risk of social isolation. Alice Bye Court is a bright and happy place to both live and work. We are all extremely happy with the latest CQC rating.” The latest inspection followed a report in March 2021 which ordered the scheme to make significant improvements, with concerns raised about the management team. Following this, Katie and the four assistant care managers were appointed, with colleagues saying “morale, team spirit and teamwork” had “significantly improved” and with the inspector recognising the “strong sense of leadership from the registered manager and assistant care manager which set the standards for staff”. Significant improvements had also been made in the administration of medicines, with employees provided with clear guidance, regular observations and competency reviews, as well as the care manager operating systems and procedures to protect people from risk of poor care.

Triton strengthens Omnicare range of electric showers with new features CONTINUING its commitment to inclusive bathroom solutions, Triton has unveiled its new and improved family of Omnicare thermostatic electric care showers. The popular Omnicare and Omnicare Design options have been updated to incorporate innovative new features that continue to place user accessibility and safety at the heart of their design. Andrew Crown, sales director at Triton Showers, said: “Our latest improvements to the Omnicare family show our commitment to designing inclusive shower solutions suitable across a number of different settings – something that is more important than ever before. “To make installation as simple as possible, it was key that we made Omnicare and Omnicare Design suitable for retrofit applications, so that they can easily replace outdated models or be implemented quickly in situations where a user’s needs may have changed. The versatility of the range is economical, ensuring replacement is simple and does not incur further work or costs during the installation process.” In line with the wider Omnicare collection, the two upgraded units feature an updated cover design, in addition to a single hand slider to facilitate easy customisation for those with limited dexterity.
A safety function allows temperature to be set internally to a maximum of 43°C, whilst allowing full rotation of the temperature dial. To ensure water remains at a safe temperature, water is constantly regulated within +/- 1°C. Facilitating ease of use, a large soft push Start/Stop button includes illumination on power and offers audible feedback. In addition, the Omnicare Design continues to offer a tactile temperature dial, which utilises soft grey tones and bold markings to help those with visual impairment.
For complete peace of mind, Omnicare and Omnicare Design have been expertly and independently tested. As a result, both solutions carry both RNIB and BEAB Care approvals for safety and performance, as well as being designed in conjunction with a professional occupational therapist to provide a safe and inclusive showering experience for any user. With hygiene standards as important as ever, the showers are supplied with an easy clean five-spray pattern showerhead with a removable spray plate, making maintenance
quick and efficient. The Omnicare model is available with an extended 680mm riser rail kit, while the Omnicare Design unit comes with an extended 940mm option with 2m anti-twist hose and lower-level handset holder, providing flexibility for both seated and standing showering. A number of accessories are also available with the Omnicare family, which can be specified and installed depending on specific user requirements. For example, an optional multipurpose grab riser rail kit designed to withstand up to 150kg support load is available to assist end-users who may be unsteady on their feet, or those who need additional support within the shower environment. Units are available to suit either analogue or digital pump connections, providing the right product for the job, without the need for further work on site. The strengthened Omnicare range follows the launch of Triton’s recent Blueprint for Bathroom Safety guide, and illustrates the company’s commitment to providing highperformance showers for everyone, regardless of age or circumstance. As the number of people living in multi-generational housing continues to rise, this is an increasingly vital element of specification.

Home enhances 100 per cent client-centric care with Gainsborough G360 wet room BASED in Stone, Staffordshire, St. Mary’s has a respected reputation locally and is a 59-bed facility focused on residential, nursing and palliative care. With one of its high traffic bathrooms requiring significant modernisation, St. Mary’s commissioned Gainsborough to install a welcoming ergonomic wet room to benefit residents and care staff alike. G360 is a complete accessible wet room service provided by Gainsborough Specialist Bathrooms. Its expert team delivers total bathroom projects from concept to completion so adults and children with restricted mobility retain dignity, hygiene and safety. This proven track record and the company’s attentive approach appealed to St. Mary’s which led to the project commission and a
successful outcome. St. Mary’s has a leading reputation for care with a CQC rating of ‘outstanding’ for one of its criteria. With an overall ‘Good’ rating, the team at St. Mary’s never waiver from a commitment to putting the needs of residents first. Operating as a charity, the care home is non-profit which means greater investment reaches residents and commercial pressures never compromise care. This approach dictated the need to provide better washing facilities and hence St. Mary’s began the search for the best wet room specialist to complete the task. Jo Nott, finance and administration manager, said: “We identified that the previous bathroom was tired and needed upgrading in all areas, hence we began researching possible suppliers. “A few quotes were obtained and Gainsborough’s was competitive, not the cheapest, but it was the whole approach that swung it for us. “Ian Trotter from G360 was brilliant; he explained everything so clearly and we felt reassured that Gainsborough would deliver on their promises. “Looking at previous specialist projects on their website, it was
clear they had the ability to meet our needs; G360 felt the right fit for us.” Now installed and in constant use, St. Mary’s new wet room incorporates the latest in accessibility innovation. It is lighter, spacious and more welcoming – providing a better bathing experience for residents. There is ample space for wheelchair and shower chair manoeuvring, so transfers are seamless with moving and handling processes simplified through an improved layout of equipment. designed holistically – providing the best environment for both resident and carer. Registered manager Natalie Dibble added: “Our G360 wet room is making a huge improvement to our level of care and underlines our commitment to making St. Mary’s a place to enjoy living. “We are an ethical, honest and transparent organisation who are proud of our service quality and thanks to Gainsborough we have taken our specialist bathing to the next level.”

Dear Grayson & Dawn,
Registered for 32, set in 3 acres of gardens and grounds, management operated, offering 30 bedrooms, the majority with ensuite facilities and has an overall CQC “Good” rating. The Home has been sold on behalf of Mrs Kay Cole, who established the Home as long ago as 1984 and been acquired by the Middlesex based Mr Kennedy Sabapathy, an existing operator with a Home in Weymouth, Dorset.
SELLING NATIONWIDE FOR OVER 40 YEARS
I must thank you very sincerely for the successful sale of my Residential Home. I would not entrust the sale of Brook House to the first “smart Alec” I met! I interviewed a number of agents & you both shone out from the rest. You talked me through a task of which I had no experience. You were sensitive & professional, without your approach I would have been lost. The first few viewings made me feel uncomfortable, you patiently understood when I removed the Home from the market. I felt the Brexit issue and General Election produced too much uncertainty. You subsequently found me 3 excellent potential buyers which resulted in 3 offers in a short time. I was reassured and confident with your knowledge and advice that I accepted the right person for Brook House or as I will always call it “my Home”. As I step back from my responsibilities, I thank my “Lucky Stars” for your help & guidance, and “Thank the Lord” for giving you the warmth and knowledge to help people like me. I wish you both success in the future so that when you start to think of retirement as an attractive move that you both have the good health to enjoy it. Yours very sincerely

34 Allica Bank is growing its specialist care home commercial mortgage banking team with the appointment of Brian Bovell as specialist relationship manager. He will spearhead the bank’s expansion into Scotland and the north of England’s elderly care sectors. Brian brings with him more than 20 years’ specialist banking experience with extensive knowledge of the healthcare and care home sector. His appointment follows the bank’s launch of a specialist care home team at the end of last year, designed to specifically support independent or small group operators as the market readjusts from the pandemic. Allica also recently announced it was doubling its maximum commercial mortgage customer exposure for care home customers to £10million, intended to enable more operators to strengthen and scale their businesses. Karen Johnson has joined Fulcrum Care as the new head of quality assurance. Karen brings with her 25 years of experience and will head up the quality assurance team and support the continued growth in the business by implementing a new groundbreaking extension of services to clients. Her extensive background has focussed predominately on quality and operations for elderly care. From a successful career working in care home inspection turnaround, followed by senior operational and strategic roles, Karen, who was most recently clinical director and chief nurse at HC One, said: “In the future for the industry, and as part of Fulcrum’s offering, I want to see the support that larger providers can give, such as support services and teams of experts, be available to everyone, even owners with one care home.” Kerry Smith has been appointed a regional manager by New Care. Responsible for supporting the care home operator in the Yorkshire and East Midlands regions, Kerry joins the senior management team and will work with New Care’s individual home managers to maintain the highest operational and quality standards and ensure exceptional personcentred care is delivered to all residents. She will also play a key role in the commissioning of new homes as the company expands, supporting the opening of new homes in Adel later this month and Guiseley in Leeds early next year. Kerry has worked in healthcare for more than 30 years and, prior to joining New Care, she held regional management positions for other care home brands and also worked for a not-for-profit operator. Specialist dementia care provider Belong has appointed Martin Rix as its new chief executive to lead the next phase of the care village operator’s expansion as it prepares to open three new sites in as many years. Martin joins from Norfolk-based Norse Care, where he was chief operating officer with responsibility for services in 36 care homes and housing with care schemes. He brings experience of overseeing specialist dementia and nursing settings and managing operations supporting around 1,600 residents and tenants and a similar number of employees. He also brings extensive experience of development projects and property consultancy, as a chartered surveyor and civil engineering graduate. His appointment follows the retirement of former chief executive Tracey Stakes in January.
Residents and staff at Sussexdown, a Care South home in Storrington, have welcomed new manager Paul Morris in its latest recruitment drive. Paul brings a wealth of experience with him, having worked in the care industry for more than 25 years with specialisms in dementia care. Prior to joining Care South, Paul worked for a care provider as an operations support manager and before this, lived and worked in Australia as a dementia consultant, and has previously owned a dementia consultancy and training service. As well as years of industry experience, Paul has a number of formal qualifications including in dementia care and holds a Registered Manager’s Award. Residents and staff at Queensmead at Castle Dene, a Care South home situated on the edge of Bournemouth, have welcomed new manager Lana Wright in the latest recruitment drive. Lana brings a wealth of experience with her, having worked in the care industry for 19 years with specialisms in residential and dementia care. Prior to joining Care South she worked in a residential care home for 14 years where she started as a care assistant and progressed to manager of the dementia community. As well as years of industry experience, Lana boasts a number of formal qualifications, such as an NVQ Level 5 in Health and Social Care, and in 2021 she won manager of the year at her previous employer’s annual awards.
New Care has appointed two new care home managers in Nottingham; Tracy Johnston at The Grand in West Bridgford and Laura Lambert at Ruddington Manor in Wilford. Tracy has worked in the healthcare sector since she was 16 years old, starting off as a carer before qualifying as a nurse. She has worked for the NHS and privately, and with many years of managerial experience, as deputy manager, home manager and regional director. Laura was previously the clinical lead at Ruddington Manor, supporting the management team, and quickly progressed to deputy manager, so was the natural choice for the registered home manager role when it became available. With 14 years’ experience working in care homes, passionate about providing the very best care for the elderly, Laura is tasked with maintaining the standards of care at Ruddington Manor. Jeremy Richardson, the former chief executive of Four Seasons Health Care, will be joining Runwood Homes as chief executive officer. He will take up his new role in early July. Following Jeremy’s arrival, Gordon Sanders, who has held the position of chief executive since the group’s inception in 1987, will take on the role of chairman. Jeremy said: “I am absolutely delighted to be joining Runwood Homes. I am excited to work alongside Gordon and the rest of his team and to build upon the success that they have achieved. Runwood Homes is already a very successful business, but also one with enormous potential, and I am looking forward to developing that potential and building an industry leading and innovative care group.”

A NORTH East construction and regeneration specialist is starting work on a supported housing village in Redcar. Vistry Partnerships has secured planning consent and agreed contracts for the 75 homes, which will be constructed for Beyond Housing within the development at Kirkleatham Green. The homes have been specially designed for customers with a wide range of support needs, including adults over 55, residents with accessibility requirements and others with learning disabilities. They will include 31 two bedroomed and 14 one bedroomed apartments, six wheelchair accessible two bedroomed bungalows, 12 single bedroomed quarter houses and 12 two bedroomed flats. The aim is to enable people to live independently for longer by providing appropriate housing, communal facilities and outdoor spaces – with flexible levels of support and care assistance where required. Andrew Rennie, development director at Vistry Partnerships North East, said: “Our Kirkleatham Green development offers a unique and innovative solution to the housing challenge on Teesside, delivering housing options for all. “Whether people are looking to buy outright, to rent privately or to access
supported housing options - such as affordable rent or shared ownership through a registered provider – there have been homes available at Kirkleatham Green. “Now, following this planning consent, an additional housing offer is to be added to what is already an inclusive project, furthering our goal to create homes that meet almost every kind of need in the wide and diverse community.” “We share Homes England’s ambition to deliver high quality, large scale housing at pace - whilst also providing jobs and training opportunities which boost local economies. “We want to create communities in
which people choose to live and work and homes in which they can take pride.” The homes have been designed to be energy efficient, reducing carbon emissions – when compared to a traditional residential unit with a combi gas boiler – by 50 per cent. This has been achieved by the inclusion of mechanical ventilation heat recovery which reclaims heat from extracted air to pre-heat the incoming fresh air, minimum heat loss insulation and air source heat pump hot water cylinders. The project will bring Vistry Partnerships North East’s recent investment in Teesside to £198million.

Apetito reveals innovative IDDSI level five desserts APETITO has extended its awardwinning range of texture modified meals and launched a new range of IDDSI level five desserts following many months in development. This gives care homes more choice to support residents who are living with dysphagia (a swallowing condition often associated with dementia that results in residents requiring a softer diet). Richard Woodward, general manager of apetito care homes division, said: “A strong focus for our business is looking at the future of dementia-friendly dining, which is something that our care home customers take very seriously. “We continue to work in close collaboration with our customers to understand their needs and their challenges and are proud to have developed this delicious new range of safe and nutritionally balanced desserts that we hope their residents will enjoy.” Hard on the heels of the launch of its Finger Foods Bites, which has
been a game changer for care homes catering for residents living with dementia, apetito’s new and marketleading desserts are based on firm traditional favourites – rice pudding, apple sponge and the much-loved classic, sticky toffee sponge. The desserts have been developed with taste and nutritional content, front of mind. The new dishes are also gluten free, and the sticky toffee sponge caters for those at risk of malnutrition, providing an energy dense option. apetito’s texture modified meals have been carefully moulded to look (and taste) exactly like the original dish they are based on, offering residents the ability to dine with dignity and return enjoyment to mealtimes. The company works hard to understand the needs of those living with swallowing difficulties and leads the market in the creation of soft and pureed meals that look and taste delicious and are safe for residents to eat.
A FORMER waitress and a former school dinners assistant have both developed a taste for success after being named as rising stars in the caring profession by their new Norfolk employer. Ashleigh Daniels, 19, from Heacham, decided to become a carer after being furloughed from her waitressing job during the pandemic, and joined awardwinning local care service provider Extra Hands, having seen the difference the company’s staff made to the life of her own greatgrandmother, a former user of their services. “I wanted a bit of a change and my family had always been into care,” she said. “Around 10 years ago, before my great-nan died, she used their services and she used to speak highly of them so I decided I would take the opportunity to join the company. “The highlight of the job has been getting to know service users, getting to know how their life works and how they want me involved in that, as much as I can be. I love getting to know them.” Kerry Williams, 49, from North Walsham, also took the career change plunge during the pandemic and since joining Extra Hands’ Broadland office has not looked back. “A lot of catering staff were furloughed, but I was still working the whole way through, running a hub from my kitchen, feeding key workers’ children, but after 11 or 12 years in the job, I fancied a change,” she said. “It was quite scary after being in a job for that long, but I am so glad I made the move. It’s so rewarding, I just love it.” Extra Hands, which was set up in 1993 by husband and wife team Dave and Hazel Evans, has offices

It has been awarded Outstanding status by the Care Quality Commission, and launched the Rising Stars award last year to acknowledge and celebrate the work of the newest employees, who have been with the organisation less than one year. Service users and their families can also nominate longer-serving employees for the GEM awards, short for Going the Extra Mile.
